You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 21-22

I’m happy to report that the upswing continues; I’m hopeful that this momentum will carry through for the foreseeable future. With more people finding out secrets, we get more action and development up in this joint, shaking it free of that slow bout of sitting and moping we had for a while. Plus, Jun-ho has some uphill climbing to do to get himself out of his mess—though the incline is so steep it’s more like digging out of one’s self-made grave—and that’s always fun to watch. I’m not a sadist, I swear. He’s just so bumblingly bad at groveling.

EPISODES 21-22

Soon-shin packs away her acting materials, and Yoo-shin sighs that she really thought she’d stick with the acting dreams; she’d never seen her so into anything before. Why not stick with it, she suggests, especially since Jun-ho believed in her so much.

Not exactly persuasive words, so when he calls saying from outside her house, Soon-shin tells him curtly that she she won’t come out. She leaves him out in the cold, which I think he deserves. For now.

At breakfast, the family confirms that she really is done with acting, and it’s Hye-shin’s turn to sigh that it’s too bad. Grandma never saw a situation she couldn’t see the downside to and grumps that she knew Soon-shin would quit because Soon-shin always quits.

I get that Soon-shin doesn’t want to drag out the pain by telling everyone about the bet, but I do wish she would. Mom stays quiet too, but at least she feels bad for Soon-shin getting blamed. Soon-shin’s just relieved to have her nice mother back and assures her that she’ll be fine; she’ll turn her attention to getting an office job now.

Bread Man Jin-wook and Hye-shin bump into each other at the grocery store, where he helps her choose produce and gets them mistaken for a couple. (He denies it with a goofy grin on his face; he’s loving the mistake a little too much, I think.) Jin-wook insists on helping Hye-shin with her bags, and as they’re fighting over it, a little ball of fury (Woo-joo) stomps between them, breaking them up and stalking off with the bag. Ha.

He’s full-blown in his crush now, and spends most of his bread-making time imagining Hye-shin’s face in the dough. Then he finds that his hands have automatically shaped said dough into a heart shape. Lol.

Jun-ho starts to clear Soon-shin’s file from their records, but can’t quite let go and changes his mind. He watches her audition clip and her monologue is, of course, apt to their situation:

“Why were you so good to me? You looked at me, smiled at me, and worried after me, asking whether I’d eaten. Why did you do that and make me flutter inside? Not knowing anything I believed it all and felt butterflies, like an idiot. What do I do now?”

Soon-shin suggests a trip to the jjimjilbang, and she and Mom thankfully have regained much of their warmth. It’s a huge relief that Mom’s finally past her bout of angst, but I can’t help but find it off-putting that she just gets to smile and have everything back without apology or acknowledgment.

Walking home, they find Young-hoon waiting in front of their house, here to ask Soon-shin to come back because they need her at the restaurant. Aw. It’s nice of him to say. She has no desire to return, but he asks her to consider a temporary return—say, just to fulfill the terms of her original six-month agreement—and she agrees to think about it.

Jun-ho drops by the neighborhood again and sees her walking with Young-hoon. She pointedly ignores him, he grabs her arm, and Young-hoon takes issue. I don’t know why but that objection endears me to him—maybe because he’s always the first to call out Jun-ho on bad behavior? Young-hoon is good people.

The problem with Jun-ho is, he struggles so much to get Soon-shin’s attention that when he finally has it, he hems and haws and can’t get to the point. So Soon-shin heads off disinterestedly, and he blurts that she’s a dummy in frustration. Smooooth.

Jun-ho blusters some more, wielding defense as offense, and says “I’m sorry!” like it’s an accusation. Shouldn’t she have been glad for the chance to be an actress?

Soon-shin agrees that he’s right, that she was like a Cinderella living a dull ordinary life: “So thank you for making a bet about me. Like you said, it was like I won the lottery.” She says this without sarcasm or vitriol, like she accepts it, and he asks what the problem is.

Soon-shin: “I have feelings too. I may be an idiot, but I also have a heart. And I also get hurt.”

Grandma wants to fly to Hong Kong to get the unhappy couple back together, and asks why Mom isn’t interfering. She finds it suspicious that Mom would kick up such a fuss about a child who’s not blood-related, and yet remain so calm about biological child Hye-shin. Ugh, Grandma.

Then she asks if Mom has a man on the side and is preparing to ditch this family, because why else would she be acting like this? Grandma’s worse than usual today, but I suppose it’s all to push Mom over the edge, because she finally can’t take it anymore and bursts out, “Soon-shin is [his] daughter!” That shuts Grandma up, and Mom begs for some understanding.

It cracks me up that Young-hoon bans Jun-ho from the restaurant, because the possibility of seeing him is keeping Soon-shin from returning. Like a little boy Jun-ho asks, “Did she say that? That she doesn’t want to see my face? Did she say she wants to see yours?”

Mi-ryung and Yeon-ah go on a talk show together, and the pesky Reporter Park shows up. He comments on Mi-ryung’s close relationship with Yeon-ah, then adds meaningfully, “But… aren’t you curious about your real daughter?”

Shaken, Mi-ryung tries to act confused by the question and Reporter Park backs off, saying he must have heard wrong. But it’s all too clear that his “I’ll see you again” is a veiled threat.

Thus Mi-ryung is simmering when Manager Hwang comes home, and turns her suspicions on him. Granted he has been acting shifty lately, but I actually feel bad for him knowing how hard he’s been working to plug that leak. He’s indignant too—he’s been working his ass off to find her daughter’s whereabouts, scouring orphanage records, and this is the thanks he gets? White as a ghost, Mi-ryung asks if he found anything. He says no, and that she can move on now.

Yi-jung pops up at the clinic again to pester Chan-woo into falling in love with her; it makes you want to tell her that’s not how it works, but she’s not the listening kind. Dr. Shin witnesses the exchange as Chan-woo firmly rejects her, saying that he has a girlfriend.

Dr. Shin sighs about his daughter’s pathetic attempts, but he does invite Chan-woo to dinner with the wife, specifically asking whether he’s been dating his girlfriend for very long. Aw, but I thought you were against Yi-jung chasing Chan-woo…

In the neighborhood, Chicken Ajumma watches a girl sashaying by in a tiny miniskirt with her judgy eyes, and then laughs when the girl trips in her heels. It turns out to be Yoo-shin, and Chicken Ajumma chides her to wear something more decent. Yoo-shin bristles, saying that this is perfectly acceptable these days, and they bicker back and forth. I have to say, I find Chicken Ajumma pretty grating but I can take her when she’s clashing with Yoo-shin, because both women can take it as well as dish it out.

Chicken Ajumma clucks to her husband about Yoo-shin’s attitude and her indecent skirt, and then has to deal with her own daughter showing up in an even tinier skirt. HA.

Mi-ryung mulls over Manager Hwang’s comment about scouring the orphanages, and rifles through papers to find the info sheet on dead Dad’s family. Seeing Soon-shin’s birthday finally triggers a suspicion. It can’t be… he didn’t…

She asks Manager Hwang about it, who starts by saying that it can’t be true. But even he has to admit in frustration that he doesn’t know.

Soon-shin decides to return to work for the remainder of her temporary contract, and it’s really sweet how warm a welcome she gets from the other employees. Like Jae-bum, who promises to take care of pesky fangirls for her.

Time for a mother-daughter double date, and where should the foursome go but The Only Restaurant In the Universe. In a daze, Mi-ryung excuses herself and comes face to face with Soon-shin. She confirms Soon-shin’s birthday, and the mounting suspicion that this is her abandoned daughter has her reeling.

Jun-ho arrives and also crosses paths with Soon-shin, and they stand there staring at each other for a long moment. But then he gets called away, Soon-shin turns back to work, and he again loses a chance to say something. If he could think of something to say, that is.

Jun-ho takes a meeting with the director of the music video, who is disappointed to hear that Soon-shin has been pulled and will no longer be acting. He sees something special in her—reminiscent of a young Mi-ryung, in fact—and believes she could turn into a worthy actor. It makes Jun-ho recall how Soon-shin said she loved acting, and thus he returns to the neighborhood (again!) that night.

He hands her her audition kit, then starts to explain himself. Better late than never, I suppose. He says that although it’ll sound like an excuse, he really was sincere about wanting to develop her as an actress: “If you ever want to start again, give me a call. I’ll wait.” Soon-shin takes the file home and gives it a watch, smiling to see herself acting.

Grandma’s having a hard time accepting that her son was a cheater and Soon-shin’s father, and presses Mom for the name of the bio-mom. However, Mom is finally ready to put everything behind her and asks Grandma to let it rest. Soon-shin is her daughter.

Mi-ryung responds to her brewing emotional crisis like she does all others, and drowns herself in drink. Then she walks to Soon-shin’s house wearing her steely grim face, and comes face to face with Mom. (End of Episode 21.)

So the moms face off… but not really because Mi-ryung just leaves with an excuse. It does little to alleviate Mom’s suspicions, and she follows to confront Mi-ryung: What did she come to say to “my child”?

Mi-ryung agrees with that wording, and it’s like in that moment she makes up her mind: Soon-shin is not hers. She says nothing will change, that Soon-shin is not part of her life.
Nobody’s talking about in plain words about the maternity claim, but it’s pretty clear that’s what they mean.

Mi-ryung drinks some more, and by now she and Manager Hwang have dropped all pretense of doubt and seem convinced that Soon-shin is her daughter. Which is what makes the denial more forceful as Mi-ryung vows, “I have no daughter. I’ve never given birth to one, nor have I abandoned one. Don’t you get it? I have no past.” I’d argue that fear of guilt is driving Mi-ryung more than an actual lack of caring, though perhaps that’s giving too much credit. She gives in to tears as she asks what she’s supposed to do now—just say, “Sorry for ditching you because your mother didn’t want to live miserably any longer”?

Grandma has terrible poker face and gets caught staring at Soon-shin, and then she’s extra nice when sending her off for the day, which comes across as creepy. When being nice makes people look at you like you’re an alien, maybe you should reassess your life choices. Just sayin’.

Out of habit, the next day Jun-ho drops by the studio looking into Soon-shin’s practice room. At the sight of her rehearsing lines, Jun-ho lights up and steps inside, only to realize it’s another trainee. At least he has his gallery of Soon-shin photos on his phone, from all the workout confirmation shots he’d demanded. Handy, that.

When he heads to the restaurant, Jae-bum blocks his path and cites boss’s orders. HA. Young-hoon pushes him out and tells him to give it a rest; Soon-shin has put everything behind, so don’t go around shaking her up.

Jun-ho argues that he hasn’t put it behind him yet… which strikes Young-hoon as strange wording: “Do you… like Soon-shin?” Jun-ho denies it, of course, but it’s not very convincing.

At the bakery, Bread Man Jin-wook offers Hye-shin a free taste of a new pastry. She says she feels bad for always getting freebies, so he assures her not to worry: “I just feel like it.” Belatedly he realizes that “I just feel like it” can be misinterpreted “This is how I feel”… just as Hye-shin notices the bread is in a heart shape. Immediately he stammers, “Uh, I didn’t mean the heart is how I feel…” while Bread Boy shakes his head in the background. He gives her two full trays of free pastries and sends her off cringing in mortification. You and me both, buddy.

Grandma can’t rest till she knows who Soon-shin’s mother is, and she asks Hye-shin about it. Hye-shin doesn’t know, but she has her suspicions and asks Mom about Mi-ryung dropping by and whether it’s because of Soon-shin. Mom finally admits, “You’re right. She’s Song Mi-ryung’s daughter.”

Today is Yi-jung’s birthday, so her mother invites Mi-ryung to dinner. Dad is mysterious about the gift he’s planned, and Yi-jung wonders if it’s to send her back to America. Ha, that would be hilarious. But mean. But hilarious.

Unfortunately (for us—fortunately for her), Dr. Shin’s plans involve inviting Chan-woo to dinner. He can’t refuse his boss and uneasily agrees.

Jun-ho, what are you doing lurking in the bushes like a stalker? Bread Man finds him peering at the Lee family house and asks what he’s doing, and both men eye each other suspiciously. When Soon-shin comes out, Bread Man asks if she knows him. She says, “Nope.” Lol. So when Jun-ho starts to follow her, Bread Man stops him and plays the gallant oppa role. Love him.

Jun-ho catches up to Soon-shin on her way up the mountain path, and again wastes time beating around the bush: He came to eat at that restaurant in the neighborhood… mumble mumble… and maybe also to talk to Soon-shin. Honey, you’re gonna have to commit to what you want to say because you’re not going to get a chance with your half-assed dithering.

She rejects his lunch invitation since she’s on her way to collect spring water, and he says he’s thirsty and follows. Ha, remember what happened the last time you tried to be manly about this hike? He’s gasping for breath in no time, and insists he has something to say to her. And then wastes the opportunity talking about spring water… and suggesting fish stew… and makgulli…

She turns him down flat and continues on alone.

That night, Hye-shin sends Yoo-shin on an errand to pick up chicken, and Yoo-shin stops to look at her reflection. She’s wearing short shorts, and harrumphs at Chicken Ajumma’s complaints about her indecent dress. Still, she stops for a second look…

HA, when she walks in, she’s in a floor-length pleated skirt with… I don’t know what you call them. Gigolo shoes, that’s what I call them. But on a woman, I guess they look like old lady church shoes. Yoo-shin insists on helping Chicken Ajumma with dishes, and their tug-of-war sends plates crashing to the ground.

Chicken Ajumma glows with pride about how Chan-woo got invited to the hospital director’s house for dinner, and declares that all he needs is a demure young wife to take care of the household and support his career. Yoo-shin protests (rather politely) that women these days don’t live to be housewives, and gets pooh-poohed.

Then to rub salt in the wound, Ajumma laughs at her clothing and tells her to wear something less ajumma-like. You know, be fashionable and young, like her daughter. Yoo-shin stomps off without her chicken, thinking herself crazy for trying to impress Ajumma.

Dr. Shin comes home with Chan-woo for Yi-jung’s birthday dinner, which makes me feel terrible for Chan-woo, but it’s a sweet gesture on Dad’s part. Mom gushes over him so much that it’s secondhand-embarrassing, and then turns her attention to Mi-ryung’s wan face and over-drinking.

Granted, Mi-ryung drinks too much wine and is well on her way to getting ugly-drunk, but Mom is being rather condescending with her You need a family and You’re lonely because you have no family and I always invite you over because I want you to experience family.

Unsurprisingly, Mi-ryung doesn’t just take it: She asks Mom if she keeps inviting her over to parade around her vision of a happy family and make Mi-ryung envy her. Well, she’s not in the least envious, she declares, and drunkenly staggers out.

Dr. Shin escorts her out and asks in concern whether something’s wrong. Mi-ryung sinks down and cries that she’s going crazy, that she lived a good life with no regrets. Yes, that sure is the face of unbridled happiness.

Chan-woo excuses himself after dinner, and I’ve gotta give him props for waiting it through until he could find an appropriate moment to leave. He states firmly for everyone’s benefit that he’s going to meet his girlfriend.

Jun-ho doesn’t like that, and follows him out to have a word. He accuses him of playing the field and warns Chan-woo to make his position clear and focus on one girl. Chan-woo says he has no interest in dating Yi-jung, and Jun-ho clarifies, “I’m talking about Soon-shin. Don’t hurt her.” Omo. I’m pretty sure Chan-woo had no idea, and this is a bit rich coming from Jun-ho, but it’s cute.

Hye-shin checks on Mom, chiding her for bottling up whole Soon-shin/Dad/infidelity thing inside. Mom admits that she treated Soon-shin badly, and that she was torn between feeling hate toward her and the fear that Mi-ryung would steal her away. Mom asks her to keep this a secret, which should last… oh, about twenty episodes, I’m thinking.

Mi-ryung and Yeon-ah have an interview lined up today, and Manager Hwang tries to relocate once he hears it’s at The Restaurant, where Soon-shin works. Mi-ryung tells him coolly that it’s fine—why should it bother her?

Even so, Mi-ryung remains distracted all throughout the interview, which does not go unnoticed by Yeon-ah. It brings out her claws, and she calls Soon-shin over specifically to be catty, wondering how she can have so little pride to continue working here. Soon-shin sticks up for herself, reminding Yeon-ah that she’s the one who made her the subject of a bet: “I think I’m the one who should be feeling upset right now.”

Yeon-ah sends Soon-shin on a personal errand to the pharmacy, then puts her sweet face on while in the presence of the reporter. Gah, back to hating you.

Soon-shin finds Mi-ryung’s script left behind afterward and finds her outside to return it. Mi-ryung has been getting weaker and sicker all day, though, and by now is crouched in pain on the ground.

Soon-shin escorts her to the hospital, holding her hand and comforting her all the way. But once there, Mi-ryung rouses long enough to yell at her to leave, and Soon-shin complies, feeling annoyed with herself for bothering.

Once outside (hey, is that the Nice Guy hospital?) she recalls the script she was going to return, and almost decides against it. But she turns back, ’cause she’s a nice person.

Mi-ryung slips out of bed unseen and heads out of the hospital, coming face to face with Soon-shin.

COMMENTS

Mi-ryung knows! Grandma knows! Hye-shin knows! Huzzah!

Long-held secrets are a staple of family dramas, and inevitably we’ll have a character or two suffering in silence for unbearable stretches. I’m used to it, but I never enjoy it, so it’s gratifying to have the secret spreading to more characters. With the Chicken Couple in on the news I’m sure it would’ve come out sooner or later, but I never like huge plot points in the hands of one entity; distributing the knowledge amongst a wider array of people gives us more room for dramatic possibilities.

I do wish the show were cleverer about the way it doled out info, because some of this secret-sharing felt forced and unnatural. Like Hye-shin getting suddenly aggro with her mother in demanding the truth, when we’ve never once seen her get pushy about anything, even her bastard ex. So yes, it feels as though things sometimes happen because the plot necessitates it more than organic character development, and in that regard I understand that You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin will never be a subtle show.

For the most part, though, it doesn’t bother me as long as we stick to a few key criteria: (1) It keeps the story moving forward, and (2) the forced quality stays plot-related and doesn’t seep into relationship developments. By which I mean, my favorite thing about the show—and probably most people’s favorite thing—is the central relationship between Jun-ho and Soon-shin. I’ll sit through fifty minutes of obvious plotting to get to those five or ten minutes of cute Jun-ho/Soon-shin interaction, with the flirting and teasing and bickering. And thus far, their interactions feel understated and natural, with a slow build that (hopefully) makes the eventual payoff worth it. That’s one of the reasons to watch longer-running family shows, because the romance is allowed to breathe and bloom gradually, which feels more true-to-life than the dramatic romances of miniseries.

Yoo-shin and Chicken Ajumma are another highlight, and one I was surprised to see given that they’ve both had their eye-rolling moments. Some more than others. But as I said, it’s the give-and-take that makes their bickering amusing (whereas the one-sided harassing sets my teeth on edge). I thought Yoo-shin’s modern woman personality was going to have the greatest clash with Chan-woo’s conservative nature, but turns out that the prospective mother-in-law clash trumps all. I don’t want Yoo-shin to change herself based on what a shrewish mother-in-law says, but I didn’t read that from her wardrobe change. It seemed more like deciding to minimize a conflict over a battle you don’t have to win, and that strikes me as mature. I buy that Yoo-shin doesn’t agree with Ajumma that she looks trashy, or that short skirts are the devil, but she’s willing to compromise and that’s cool.

I'm dying for more Shin-Shin and Hye Shin and Bread Man plot. Chan Woo/Yoo Shin is too predictable for me haha.

Can we push Yeon Ah off a cliff? I don't like resorting to violence, but she frustrates me, even more so than Yi Jung haha.

I need to know who the dad is! I'm going to assume it was some director or some guy who died. It's definitely not one of the men on the show or Soon Shin's dad, because--it would be weird if it was Chicken guy or Junho's dad. And if it was Soon Shin's dad, that would justify mom's ridiculous behavior and I couldn't stand that haha.

Thanks!

I agree with you. I think the dad is going to be another character we haven't meet yet. There's just no way that either JH or LSS dad is her real dad. The first has never really liked MR, the second just seem like a really nice man that loved his wife & family.
I wonder how they will explain LSS dad ending up with the baby? Did she purposely leave her in a place he would find her? Was she ( the baby) just left behind & since this is drama land. The right person found her?
Wasn't MR surprise when she found LSS dad in the neighborhood in the first episodes?

I guess manager hwang gave the baby to soon-shin's dad and asked him to found her a family or took her to orphanage .

when mi-ryung found out soon-shin is her daughter she yelled to manager " didn't chang-hun oppa took the baby to orphanage?? how could this happen??"

I agree with you, too, about the identity of Soon-shin's dad. I don't know what the rules are about introducing a new character to be the dad at this point in the story, but it can't be Jun-ho's dad for OTP reasons, and Mr. Lee seemed like a family man during his brief time on-screen. I don't see him cheating on Mom, even if Mi-ryung was his first love.

I hope bio-dad isn't Chicken Guy or Manager Hwang, though.

If it was Manager Hwang I may have to barf haha. Because I think he's supposed to be younger than her and I just don't like him hahaha. If it's Chicken guy that would be hilarious because of Chicken Ajumma, but I don't think it's him because that would be awkward for Chan Woo/Yoo Shin even if they're not blood related. Plus, he's too...timid for her lol.

I think the dad will be some rich guy who's family wouldn't want an actress to be his wife. Then he was sent abroad before he knows he has a daughter. I just hope he remained single coz I wouldn't want a bad father for SS.

There's another possibility to LSS father's - someone who would never appear in this drama because he is just one of the many men MR slept with to get her acting career up and running... so she doesn't know whoever the father is :/

I also guess MR sees YA in herself, hence her seeming connection to her...

"Can we push Yeon Ah off a cliff? I don’t like resorting to violence, but she frustrates me, even more so than Yi Jung haha."

She really is a frustrating one isn't she? Though I must admit from the moment she first appeared on the screen I resolved myself to disliking her. Her character was just so typical and cliche that you instantly figured out which role she would play.

Yi Jung on the other hand still annoy me, but in a different way. She all her fixation on Chan Woo aside, she seems mostly harmless. Although go Chan Woo for making is firm that he has a girlfriend, bosses daughter or not!

Thanks, also, Javabeans.

I like how "the only restaurant in Seoul" is now "the only one in the Universe". If Anthony was producing this show, I bet there would be a couple more restaurants used for product placement.

And yes, it's worth watching for those ten minutes of cute.

I solidly skipped through the older mothers in this episode (Except the Yoosin scenes.). I also added the manager for skipping, and then JH's sisters as well, who annoys me to no end. (And of course her enabling mother). Which also meant I skipped out on all of the scenes that JH's ex was in. I saw three seconds of each and figured out in those three seconds what was happening and then skipped. Made the two episodes go a lot faster.

Not sure if JH knows about his feelings or not. He may be that dense after all.

Love Bread man, though and the sisters' romance. I just wish the mothers would act like true mothers... or one of them. Ya know, kick their children's butts into gear when they aren't doing so well, etc. How could all of them strike out so solidly and much in the same way?

LOL... i skip all of Yi Jung and YeonAh scenes too. They are both so annoying. Yi Jung is unbelievable... that girl should just be wiped out from this drama. YeonAh started out OK, but i guess she is meant to be antagonist. And it's too annoying for me when she call MiRyung "eomma..."

I also skip the chicken ajumma scenes, grandma, and Jung Ae scenes... I wish we can have all 50 minutes filled with Junho and Soonshin only! :)

Yi Jeong and her enabling mother in the same scene are near to unbearable. I just don't get her. The man isn't into you--move on! He's told her how many times he has a girlfriend? I've lost count, but then I've been kinda taking to skipping through her. The mother knows the guy has a girlfriend and also doesn't care. And instead of smacking her daughter with some sense, keeps going on about how lucky her daughter is like she has him. NO.

If I was an ajoomma in Korea, with linoleum floors to clean, this is the time to do it.

Yeon Ah, I don't mind so much, especially when she calls out JH. But when she's in with the mother and dysfunctional daughter crew... I just can't stand it. I mean, I really tried, but it's like seeing dysfunction and not wanting to scream.

I might be able to stand it if there weren't so many of these dysfunctional characters all collectively enabling each other.

For me I already felt like I knew where YeonAh would end up so I must admit to never caring about her from the start. And her pettiness surrounding Soon Shin seems unjust as well.

Now, if she'd taken to compete with Jun Ho over making Soon Shin into an actress (she who could make her successful or something) that could have been interesting. Rather than just having her making the bet, and then get annoyed when the guy actually takes her up on it.

yeah, I really wished that the "acting" part would be more developed. I would like to see Soo Shin acting in the same drama as YeonAh before revealing that "mum" issue (to make Soo Shin's acting better because of her own strength, not because of her real mum's popularity). But, since I saw the preview, it won't happen that way. eh...

I haven't seen the peview so donno what happens there. But yeah I'd like to see more of the acting and development of Soon Shin. And as I said it would be more satisfying to watch if Yeon Ah and Jun Ho had competed a bit more. Like it's on Jun Ho to make her a star, but nothing says that Yeon Ah couldn't have been interacting and tried to get Soon Shin over on her side.

Or just be anything else than just mean to her because Jun Ho pay's attention to Soon Shin.

I really wish Grandma would just shut up, and I really cannot figure why she thinks it is a good thing for the sister to get back with a total jerk. And I also wish that the air-headed sister would go back to America or Slovenia or anyplace but this drama.

I have a special dislike for airheads in dramas, and this show seems to have more than the usual quota. Perhaps they come across funnier in Korean, but to me they are just time wasters that add zero to the plots.

Yeah, I skipped so much that 2 hours of the drama turned into 1!

I did watch a few bits with Yeonah and Yi jung, and uhhhh.....

I found the dinner that Chan-woo attends at his boss's house very upsetting. I can't see it as a "sweet gesture" on part of the Dad – it's manipulative from all angles. Either the Dad is doing something for his daughter, but this means he's using Chan-woo who he well knows has a girlfriend (and he knows what he's doing to his obsessive, narcissistic daughter by taking Chan-woo home), OR he's taking him home to teach Yi jung a lesson (which was his approach so far), but he's still using Chan-woo. Whichever, what he did and what his wife and daughter are doing is so disrespectful towards Chan-woo. He's got a girl. And if he didn't, he would still not be interested in Yi jung. They need to accept that and leave him alone.

I trust that Chan-woo is going to keep on saying very loudly and clearly that he has a girlfriend, because he's just a very upright person. Unfortunately, we're bound to get conflict in future episodes on the basis that Yoo-shin will misunderstand, complicated by the fact that their relationship is a secret to some significant people. I'm not looking forward to that – I mean, it would be okay if we get more scenes like when Yoo-shin picks up Yi Jung's phone call, but I'm doubtful it'll all play out like that. More likely that chicken ahjumma is going to get wind of Yi jung's interest in her son and will then start pushing him to be with her. Which would be so.......uhhhhhh.

*sigh*

yeah I agree with you about the dad inviting Chan Woo around screams manipulation in one for or another. And although Yi Jung have seemed kinda harmless so far, I don't want it to turn into misunderstanding galore. Or Chan Woo giving in to her pestering in a hope that that would work better.

When it comes to skipping.. I think we all find ourselves playing hopscotch with this drama. The cute is worth it, but I wish there was more of it!

"Or Chan Woo giving in to her pestering in a hope that that would work better."

I'm going to firmly believe that his character is too upright for that. Because if that happens, what it will mean to me is that we have crappy writers creating this story. They've very clearly established Chan Woo as a no-nonsense, honest, loyal and kind guy up to now, if he 'caved' I think it would be completely inconsistent with his character.

Required fields are marked *

I am with you on that! It would be completely inconsistent with that way he's been acting this far, but somehow I can also see him being pushed/manipulated into doing that.

Can you imagine if Yi Jung and her mum turned up at the chicken shop? That would be painful for all.. At least chicken ahjumma won't like her way of dressing, though I suppose being from a rich family helps counter that..

Please writers, don't go there!

0

Well, her own daughter dressed in a short skirt and she said nothing about it!

Maybe chicken ahjumma is only judging Yoo-shin like that because she has a hunch that Chan-woo likes her. If we do get a twist with chicken ahjumma pushing Yi-jung onto her son, it would be seriously depressing because Yi-jung has so many bad qualities, while Yoo-shin, even with her potty mouth, has plenty of good ones! She's self-reliable & independent, while Yi-jung can't even fulfil the 'good wife' role. Sure, she'd swoon over Chan-woo, but wouldn't be able to even cook or do anything for her husband (which, I'd imagine, be some of chicken ahjumma's main arguments against Yoo-shin – not doing enough for Chan-woo for being a too independent woman).

0

Yeah I also guess the fact that chicken Ahjumma has seen the way Yoo Shin has acted around guys in the past hasn't helped her image. But yeah Ahjumma is a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to things..

I kinda want to see Yi Jung turn up just to have a beat down from chicken Ahjumma though. Because you'd hope she'd have that "no one is good enough for my son". And as you say, Yi Jung would be unable to do cooking and cleaning; so while Yoon Shin wouldn't be good enough for being to independent, Yi Jung wouldn't be good enough for not being able to care for Chan Woo the way his mother would want.

I said this before but I'll say it again. Bread man needs more screen time! He is just the best comic relief ever.
JH sitting in his office just thinking about LSS & looking at her pictures. He is soo adorkable. Then him & bread man in the same scene! It was just too much. I was also very happy to see restaurant oppa outside! He of the never quite matching clothes that yet always works for him. He can actually walk in the sunlight!!

Thank you for the recap! I've been waiting for this all week :D

At long last, Mi-ryung knows. I'm looking forward to watching her twist in the wind about this - she deserves it after all she's done to Soon-shin.

Loving Dr. Shin's little show of affection towards his daughter, and the further development of Yoo-shin's storyline. I'm glad I don't have to hate her anymore - now I can devote my efforts to Yeon-ah :p

Of course, Bread Man remains my favorite. I saw him on "Happy Together" last night and his off-screen banter with the actress playing Hye-shin (Son Tae-young?) was wonderful, too. You're the best, Bread Man!!!

I hate chars who think nothing walking all over somebody, but the min. they think that maybe their kid, then all of a sudden it is Not ok. Why is it alright to destroy LSS's life when she is the daughter of the man who saved your life, but Not to okay to screw w her when she is your own? I frankly don't get that kind of thinking at all. I find it disgusting.

I hope that after LSS finds out that MR is her biological mother, she'll continue to live with this family until she marry. Sure, she can meet up with MR once in a while when she wants, but to move in w MR, and marry out of her house, I don't want LSS to give her that satisfaction!

Required fields are marked *

I know! I so agree!

I did not like what they were hinting at in this episode. Now suddenly MR is interested in LSS. She just spent a few episodes being evil and eliminating any contact with her, and now she's watching her every move. I don't buy it and I too think it's disgusting. (The preview for the next episode doesn't help.)

LSS should not develop a relationship with this woman. If she learns that she's her bio mom, fine, but this is a toxic woman. She's nice in one second, evil in another, and then suddenly interested again. This is not a person you want to associate with. I also don't believe she can truly change (or if she could, it would take years and years, for which LSS should not stick around).

Honestly, these two episodes left me with the worry that from now on we'll get even worse manipulations, to the degree that it will all be too frustrating to watch. It'll all be for MR to be redeemed, but, I'm sorry, in my eyes she can't be redeemed. She's shown too much of her nasty, nasty personality already.

Somehow I'm also sensing a "MR is ill, needs bio daughter's help" (maybe a liver transplant given the emphasis on MR's drinking?) twist coming.... Again, something I would hate hate hate.

And what if bio mum's doing this getting back her real daughter mainly because everyone else knows it (reporters, etc). She has to admit this in public in order to save her career? Well that would make her really evil. :D

Ok, i don't think the writers will go that far, as bio mum has already shown some real emotions when seeing SooShin... But I don't want her to be so easily redeemed.

Required fields are marked *

I've been thinking that too.

It's selfish, doubly selfish.

People would start being interested in SS for being the daughter of a well-known actress, not for the talent that she has and the actress she could be come by her own merits.

I'm not convinced of the bio mom's emotions. She's been shown to do things for her own benefit only – be nice when it benefits her, be evil when it benefits her.

Of course, she is shocked now... but I'm not going to buy that she actually cares for and has unselfish interest in SS even in the tiniest bit.

Required fields are marked *

I agree with you! I hope they don't go there.. I mean I could sorta see a redemption for her after the accident and then developing a bond with Soon Shin. Then figuring out she was the mom, we could have the angst moment of "your dad died to save me" and we could move on.

The moment she cut out Soon Shin and started sabotaging her was my moment of "Hell no, no respect for you" for MR. She doesn't deserve to get a forgiving relationship with Soon Shin, baby abandonment aside. I could sorta live with that earlier in the series but not anymore.

I was so relieved to see that Soon Shin's Mom has finally come to her senses and stopped directing her rage against the poor girl. She even feels remorse for the way she treated her youngest daughter, and is back to being the fiercely protective mother I knew her to be at bottom. Too bad she broke down and told Granny what she believes to be true about Soon Shin's paternity, because the old bag is an emotional loose cannon who will probably end up spilling the beans in such a way as to ensure maximum destruction.

And my God, that Mi Ryung is surly on big poisoned pill. I don't think words can express how much I hate her. Such a selfish, self-centered hag.

All the other mom conflicts, including granma's, I'm ok with because they are needed for plot development. Actually happy that that particular thread moved quite fast, with Hye Shin knowing it now too.

I wonder how Yoo Shin will feel when she learns of this secret. She has always been the one jealous of Soon Shin because she is the apparent favoured one by both the mom and dad. I dread the thought that she might start blaming Soon Shin again for bringing misfortune to the family. *sigh

Put the three men (Jun Ho, Breadman and Chan Woo) in a room, and there are no end of fanfic possibilities. post finale I love their interactions. Among my giggly imaginations, there's one where Jun Ho and Chan Woo plays [guitars] together for SS and YS. Except the ladies are totally fangirling the wrong guys.

Or the three of them lounging around in BreadMan's basement studio, bragging that all men should have a place of their own - like a club - where they can hangout and chill. But if anyone asks the ladies where the menfolk are, "They have been put out to the doghouse!"

And BreadMan Oppa - Can you imagine him being the "Man of the House" because he becomes the eldest son-in-law. Lol. At least Grammy likes him.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought Hye-shin's sudden pushing mom for the truth was pretty out of character. I thought it was a very weird moment actually.

As much as I'm entertained watching the clash btw Yooshin and chicken ajumma, this is going to be troublesome when their relationship is out in the open. Not sure how annoying that's going to be.

As for Yeonah and Yijung, BLECH! I think I can understand that we'll be seeing more of Yeon-ah being a bitch because she wants Junho. But we don't need to see anymore of Yi-jung. Chanwoo and Yooshin are going to have their hands full with the potential mother-in-law-objecting plot so I don't see how the drama has any more room to stick Yijung in there. She is so annoying.

Thanks for the recap -- I have to agree with everyone, the birth secret seems to be coming out in an inorganic matter of fact way.

It is also interesting to see that Yeon Ah is just flat out mean to Soon Shin now, even worse than Yi Jung was back when they first met. The gloves are off, and obviously she's still annoyed/angry/bitter that Jun Ho left her the other day to search for Soon Shin.

Granny is the strangest character -- and maybe it's because she's Korean? I'm of Chinese descent and in our family we've had many adopted children over the years, going back at least 3 generations, and I've never noticed overt favortism of one child over another just because one is a "trueborn" versus adopted child. Granny seems to be in her own little world where her daughter-in-law used to respect her every word, her son was awesome, and the family had it's natural order, with her being on top.

Suddenly, her special son is gone and now things aren't going away. It's all your fault it's that way, I should just go and die and be with him. I find her attitude extremely petty and somewhat unusual of all of the grannies I've met, and my own was somewhat bigoted, but she would never speak like that. Perhaps they are all too Americanized, but her attitude continues to bother me.

I am getting a little frustrated with Soon Shin's career -- it sure is taking a long long time to take off. I hope it doesn't go on with her working at the restaurant until episode 45 and then finally she gets her chance at stardom. Frankly, while she looks really cute in her server outfit, it's not that interesting. I much rather see her doing what she dreams of doing and meeting new people and learning from her mistakes, savoring victories, etc. I also want to see fans chasing after her -- it's always fun to see the "nobody" in the show become a somebody, and to see their reaction to sudden popularity. I can't imagine what happens now -- I'm sure everywhere IU goes cameraphones record every second. I want to see her meeting fancy actors and rich people who put on airs and have her down to earth attitude contrast with theirs. I want to see her Boss and co-workers at the restaurant marvel at her stardom, etc. Those are all the fun things I want to see -- that and the breaking news that Jun Ho and her are an item.

Believe me, this show is not representative of how awesome Korean mothers can be or how strong Korean grandmothers can be. That's my main frustration with this show. I know that Korean mothers can be great... but this show is irking me by saying that's wrong constantly.

I wouldn't internalize any of that.

It is true, that solidly females are adopted into Korean families and there is mostly international adoptism, however, I've never met a Korean grandmother as much of a curmudgeon as that grandmother. My two grandmothers who are not Korean (I have 4... sooo....) who lived through 2 world wars, and have anxiety problems after living through the depression, also are not as much of curmudgeons as this one.

So yeah, it's just this one. 'Cause I know Korean women can be awesome in being strong and living through unspeakable amounts of crap AND be good mothers/grandmothers.

I think a lot of dramas paint mothers (and dads) in a bad light, especially the korean mother-in-laws whom seems to have gotten a very bad reputation! And the grandmother in this one seems to be right up there with the worst.

It sorta make you miss seeing nice, loving parents and in-laws, because although you know drama's don't show reality, the constant negative focus on it does sorta create the feeling of "ah this is how they would act". However unjust that is. Which doesn't bring justification to all the strong and awesome, and good (supportive) mothers and in-laws who are out there.

I think the writer(s) just have trouble with writing the concept of moms in general, not even specifically korean ones. Even Hye Shin just seems kind of bewildered by Woo Jin (and not very in touch with Woo Jin's feelings) and she seems to otherwise be a really good mother.

The drama's understanding of motherhood lacks the aspect of sacrifice for your children- during the Hye Shin/ Mom scene, it bothered me that it was all about 'poor mom, how is she coping', when you know, there's a daughter out there who has no idea why she's been treated badly or is even adopted. Most people with maternal instincts would have some concern for the child in question- but with mom and grandma, it's all 'I can't take this, this is hurting me, how can I live, blah blah blah." That's highly unlike mothers- from anywhere.

Song Mi Ryeong having that mentality is understandable- she's the one who gave up everything and everyone to make it about herself and her acting career, and she's well aware of it. But Soon Shin's family portrays that kind of selfishness when the drama is telling us to think they're good, caring parents and that rings hollow.

I can do without the sacrifice if one of the mothers once in a while told their children to do the really hard thing even though it didn't benefit the mother in any fashion. I don't need to Heo Joon levels, where his mother is kinda bending over backwards, but I do think, for example, her mother saying something to Soon Shin like audition for a new agency, or asking to see her audition tape to see if she's any good would be the type of thing I'd love to see.

In another words, push their children to try harder because they know that person can do better.

It's like the kind of story where the wife says to the husband that now she's married she's going to be a housewife, do everything. And the husband knows her well enough to say that he doesn't want that because it would make her miserable. Sure he'd benefit greatly from having a clean house, etc. But the cost to her would be too great. That kind of love goes very, very far for me.

You *did* get that sort of love, even if a little misplaced in Goong, My Princess and some other K-dramas. I wish there was a tiny bit of it here.

Yay for character changes and realizations happening left and right :DDDDD Booo for it feeling like a ton of bricks being tied to the plot and slowing it down :((((( All that aside:
- yay for mom coming around and returning to the nice and warm ahjumma she once was ^.^ FINALLY. But it seems like Mom and Grandma are always on polar opposite of the emotion spectrum cuz, sadly, as soon as Mom got back to being her nice and warm self, Grandma got back to her mean, bitter, and petty self sigh ):
- awwwwwwwwwww YOUNG HOON, HIMSELF, GOING TO SOON SHIN TO ASK HER TO RETURN TO THE RESTAURANT TO CONTINUE WORKING FOR AND WITH HIM!!!!!! <3 And, awwwwwww banning Jun Ho from his restaurant cuz he knows that if Soon Shin sees Jun Ho there (or ANYWHERE for that matter), it'll upset her *spazz* Please gimme a moment *spazz some more...... Peels self off the floor*
- I'm GLAD Soon Shin is mad at Jun Ho and Yeon Ah and that Jun Ho is needing to WORK to get Soon Shin's trust and attention again, you go girl!!!!
- lol I never thought I'd ever be warming up to such a flatly written character like Jae Bum, but awwwww, he's so nice to Soon Shin now, even offering help if she ever were to get beaten up again :)
- Note, all the drinking that Mi Ryung had been doing within these 2 episodes, I now fear for her liver :p
- Jun Ho confronting Chan Woo about not playing with a girl's heart..... Boy, you've got a lot to learn Hahaha If only you could do the same for Soon Shin in front of Yeon Ah, who, as of right now, could have someone (or 50ish peeps) give her a real good b---- slap bahahahhahahahahahha

Hmmm you do have a point there about Young Hoon, but at the same time, throughout the whole time when the bet was happening, he DID confront Jun Ho and Yeon Ah about taking things too far and being careful of not hurting Soon Shin, and he was one of the 2 (the other being Jun Ho) to actually notice that acting was what made Soon Shin click and made her happy ^^ And I do believe him when he said he didn't want her to have her bubble popped and her happiness gone from finding out about the bet....because he lurrrrves her ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Now, when Jun Ho told her about himself making a bet at her expense but ended up REALLY wanting to help her become an actress, I don't believe THAT....

I disagree with this statement...ok at first it was for getting Yeon Ah back (more like a revenge plot if you ask me, he clearly doesn't love her anymore) but little by little he started to genuinely care for Soon Shin. I think he really meant it when he told her he wanted to help her, he did witness how passionate she became about acting during the time they spent together...moreover though he's dense about it, he gradually start to fall for Soon Shin...though it will take some time before he admits it...*surprise me show*

I agree with you. I think that when Jun Ho was confronted with the pain and stuff he went through himself, he started realizing a bit of what he was doing was acting in a way which would lead him to treat her the same way he was treated.

It may have been because of the bet in the beginning, but as he saw her efforts I think he started actually caring. Why else would he be so angry at MR and Yeon Ah for the sabotaging? Or in Yeon Ah's case the misunderstood belief that she was the one behind it. The way he tried to spare Soon Shin from MR's actions as well, to me, say that he started caring about her as more than the bet to get Yeon Ah back.

Might not be love just yet, but at least its an understanding and seeing his own struggles in Soon Shin; thus not wanting to put her through the same pain he experienced. Which seems genuine and is something that has been growing and can be seen in his interactions with Soon Shin.

0

Agree. It might not be love yet but he feels some attraction towards her... this can't be denied :) (hallucinations, stalking her, stumbling over his words and watching her pics are obvious signs imo)

0

I agree. To me it's been totally obvious, as the show has progressed, that the bet with Yeon-ah has been regulated to the back of Jun-ho's mind. He no longer thinks about how working with Soon-shin will make Yeon-ah sign with his company. Now, he thinks about how Soon-shin's training will benefit Soon-shin. Time and time again, when something happens, his thoughts jump to Soon-shin and how she's dealing with whatever happened. He thinks about her first and everything else comes second. If that doesn't scream "I love you" I don't know what does.

This pair of episodes I loved because Jun-ho is slowly (really slowly) starting to realize his feelings. It may be a while before he comes to the full realization, and then a little longer to act on it, but I'll take what I can get with this guy.

0

"he DID confront Jun Ho and Yeon Ah about taking things too far and being careful of not hurting Soon Shin"

True, true... but he just made me feel in this episode that he had nothing to do with it at all. But silence is being complicit. (If he's so sensitive to SS's feelings, he'd have known she would feel hurt not only about the bet, but also not being told by people who knew about the bet).

I can buy Jun-ho really wanting to help Soon Shin though. He started off the wrong way, for sure, but he did do more than what is normal for her. And he's awkward, bumbling reactions to everything to me project very little pretense – I think he's an honest person. He reacts so automatically and so unaware of everything around him (e.g. when he tell Yeon-ah he practiced the guitar for Soon Shin without), in moments that other would pretend/not reveal something, that I think it's coming from the heart.

Right. The two times he confronted Song Mi Ryeong about treating Soon Shin well (he knew what kind of person she was!), MR always snapped back what was essentially, "like you have any room to talk". Jun Ho almost seemed surprised both those times-- like he had completely forgotten about the bet in the first place, and when reminded of it, just thought, 'oh, yeah, that thing.' Part of the reason I think he was so bewildered by Soon Shin's total dismissal of him was because the bet had faded to a nonentity in his mind. Other than signing her, it didn't affect his treatment of her at all. I don't think he gets that she thinks everything he did was for Yeon ah and not her, because he A) obviously is privy to what Yeon ah has said to Soon Shin, B) probably still underestimates Soon Shin's capacity for doubting herself, and C) wasn't thinking about Yeon ah at all in the first place.

0

- I still fear Nd worry for Mi Ryung's liver...seriously, Oy!!!
- I don't believe that Young Hoon is wrong nor right about not telling Soon Shin about the bet and feeling full of himself or righteous in asking Soon Shin to work for him again... I just believe that for certain things, not everyone has the position to speak out about what's going on (in this case, Young Hoon to Soon Shin about the bet), but I give him credit for looking out for her (cuz he luuuuuurves her) and giving multiple warnings to Jun Ho and Yeon Ah
- I only believe in Jun Ho wanting to help Soon Shin become an actress to a certain point, to me, personally-so just ME- it felt that many of the things he did, he did it out of spite and out of wanting something good for his company (as a CEO should).... Until all those business-like decisions did start to seep into his personal feels for Soon Shin and his whole attitude towards the whole 'bet' thing.... For me-again, this is just my own opinion- I felt that Jun Ho did end up wanting to help Soon Shin even after the fact that Soon Shin found out about the bet, because he told her to go find him if she ever wanted him to sign her again, but also, just like Soon Shin said "...because I seemed like a Cinderellla that needed help..."

AND WHY DOESN'T ANYBODY ACKNOWLEDGE THE RESTAURANT MANAGER AND HIS FLAWLESS SELF?! His flawless looks, his flawless hair, his flawless colourful jeans.. why????? Ughh, every single time he appears on my screen I die inside a little.

Also, Soon Shin has proved me wrong. She is the typical lolita heroine (I like to refer to female characters as 'lolitas' and 'baddies' . A baddie would be the sophisticated, womanly, fly, hot and just all around bad as f***! The lolita is a girl who is just the complete opposite lol) but she is holding her own right about now. I thought she was weak but shes becoming stronger a little.

And did any of you guys catch the preview? I was HIGHLY disappointed.. Mi Ryung is gonna come to their house and demand for her daughter to live with her?! Wtf, no woman! No! Because you've experienced this great epiphany you feel the need to snatch her away from the people who raised her?! What she needs to do is for at LEAST 4-5years try and make up for lost time. And I really hope Soon Shin continues to have a backbone and doesn't take her birth mothers shit!

Also guys, I like to rant about this kinda shit a lot so check my youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/CallmeChrissss and bloghttp://callmechrisss.blogspot.co.uk/

Well, I guess we could say it matches MR's narcissistic personality to demand such a thing. (Though it makes no sense given that she previously had zero interest in ever finding out what happened to her baby.)

Completely delusional of course. I hope they all laugh her out of the house, because that's the only reaction this kind of demand would deserve. I also SS isn't going to cave – because even if MR were a nice person, there is zero reason for SS to move out of her home, away from her family that has raised and loved her.

I'm worried about where this show might be headed – why would they write in such a demand, if they weren't going to do something with it?

preview of ep 24: MR told jun-ho she's going to hold a press conference, she wants to announce the fact that she had a daughter. she demand SS's mom to went along with her story . the decision is opposed by SS's mom but MR still went to the conference anyway. meanwhile junho heard from manager hwang that SS is MR's secret baby....

I have been think about this while watching ep 22 whether MR will acknowledge SS so early on. Given all the things she had done to get her fame and glory, I thought it would be more in character for MR to try to wriggle her way out of this situation either by denying she had a child or denying SS is her child. After watching the preview, I must admit to being kinda shocked because it looked as though MR suddenly had a change of heart and wanted to reclaim SS as her daughter. Could think be a PD's gimmick to raise the ratings for next week - after all, these are just snapshots put together in random sequence which could mislead the audience? My guess is more likely that MR will do something along this line - spin some sob stories about being an unwed mother losing her daughter when she was younger or quietly send SS overseas to study and hopefully with time the paparazzi will get off her back.

It's all really selfish though....

If she publicly reclaims SS as her daughter, in a way that's going to sabotage SS becoming an actress in her own right. Because everyone would suddenly be interested in her and probably want to cast her...

But, hey, it could serve MR really well (she'd be getting lots of press and probably raising her profile more, especially if she spins some sort of 'pity me' story – wasn't she struggling with getting 'too small' roles at the beginning of the drama?).

In any case, if she does claim SS as her daughter, especially publicly, she's not thinking for one second what it will do to SS, how it will affect her (emotionally and otherwise).

Exactly my thoughts. That's why I think more in line with MR's character, she'll come up with some plans to cover her ass. And in this case, reclaiming SS may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for MR, if MR is able to turn the tables around.

I dare to differ about Soon-shin's possible choice. Her loving family included Yooshin who had been extremely mean to her all of their lives (except in the last few weeks), a grandmother who could not stand her always belittling her, a mother who had been nice to her, but also was extremely cruel and cold for a while... Soonshin finding out she had been adopted might just be too much for her to handle. She may think that all the injustices done to her are a product of not being a biological daughter. She may feel so hurt and betrayed by everyone and decide to focus on her carreer in acting - something that makes her truly happy. Even if it means going off with MR.

Oh, if Soon-shin wanted to move out and live at her own place, I'd totally understand that.

But she has 20 years of history with her family and we also know she loves, despite some of them not having treated her nicely. Her mother is difficult – I think she's been too nasty to be easily forgiven (I would feel very betrayed if my mother blamed me like that for something I had no fault in), but it's pretty clear that SS still loves her mom despite all that. Yooshin has been nasty, although we don't know exactly how it all was when they were growing up.

Even if Soon Shin feels betrayed by them all and wants to go off, I just don't see why it would be with MR. They've got a few weeks of history, half of which were being nice based on a lie/bet, the other half were MR was being outright evil. Being biologically related isn't going to fix that – rather, it comes with the fact that MR abandoned SS and never had any interest in knowing whether her child was okay or not.

I think in that situation, the only ones that seem trustworthy at this point would be her best friend or Chan-woo (who has always been nice to her). Plus her oldest sister.

Nope - count out her "best friend"! Who leaked the secret of the con - friend did! Who belittled the possibility of a contract between LSS and JH - her friend did! She is as judgy and loose lipped as her Chicken Ajumma mama!

Chan Woo, Hye Shin have my vote, too, as being trustworthy.

I think all of the mothers are somewhere in Axis II. The grandmother seems to be a bit BPD... with her "I'm a victim" 24-7 thing. (This drama seems to be saying once you hit menopause you can no longer regulate your mouth or hormones.)

Most people who find out that they were adopted as late as SS, feel betrayed and often confused.

However, I have yet to see a single adopted person go out and say they want to change their family records. I doubt SS would say, change her family register.

Besides, you are supposed to tell this kind of thing early on. It's been proven over and over again, you have to talk about adoption and adoption issues early. From as early as the child can understand. It's been in social work since the 1960's. Granted some stupid parents don't get it and still do this crap (Despite being told not to over and over again by a social worker), but if they know, then it's likely others will also know. (Really? Soon Shin's mother never was showing when she had a baby of her size?)

This is how I give it even less weight. The birth secret isn't believable in the first place. You need to do the paperwork, and how did Chicken Ajooma nor the neighbors figure it out? A baby pops up one day and that's it? Really? Also the siblings are old enough to remember by that time. It's like believing you can adopt Harry Potter style in modern GB. Uhhh... I very much doubt that.

I kind of feel the whole birth secret thing is time filler rather than a thought out plot (It has way too many holes in it). Kinda like how the mothers are also half-baked (In more ways than one.)

But then k-dramas are really horrible with adoption the majority of the time, so I know I shouldn't expect much from it. (Closest to perfect were My Princess and My Father. Not perfect though....)

Unfortunately this is the case for most asian families who adopt. same goes for family secrets--everyone knows but noone talks about it with the parties involved!my cousin is adopted but my entire family is acting like we don't know and sometimes the neighbors (who by the way know he's adopted) even comment that he looks like my aunt which would be kind of impossible since they are no way related to each other!

I guess how you relate to a certain drama will depend on how close its customs are with yours. There are some things that you might find really weird but we find totally normal coz of our own experiences.

This episode belonged to Lee, Misook (Miryung). In the previous episodes her face was so expressionless that it made me think she wasn't a good actress. Now that face makes a lot of sense. In this episode, Ms. Lee shows a range of emotions and acts so well that, in spite of really hating her character, the scene in which she is laying on the bed in the emergency room, thinking of Soonshin, with tears in her eyes and breathing heavilly, just about broke my heart. Finally that mask, that plastic face she so carefully constructed, was peeled off and the real person, wiht all her faults emerged. Bravo to the actress. I expect to see lots of flashbacks to her miserable life in orphanage etc. to excuse her. As for Soonshin's adoptive mother... She loves soonshin as long soonshin does what she wants her to do. she treats her like her own private charity case. When that case shows character and rebels, mom is quick to hate. I don't get that... even if she thinks that soonshin is her husband's bastartd child, she is too much.

Whoa there this must your first Lee misook drama. This woman is pretty amazing in what she can do for the characters she plays. Check her out in Can We Get Married?, Love Rain, Cinderella's Sister, A Thousand Days Promise. Although the latter 3 dramas aren't great imo.

I'm happy enough that Things Happened in eps 21&22, but the older characters continue to piss me off. (and ha, poor Soon Shin is going to believe all of the older generation around her are bi-polar.)

1) Mom's sudden turnaround. Yes, given her previous behaviour it's welcome, but it's too... sudden. It's like the writers realised one day "Waitaminute! People don't like Mom treating Soon Shin like she's worthless and to blame for everything that's gone wrong in Mom's life? Hunh. Who'd have thought?" and then decided to write her differently. Ohh-kay? Maybe Soon Shin doesn't need an apology, but as a viewer, I feel the need to see a bit of remorse and, yeah, maybe some grovelling.

2) Granny's own sudden transformation. She's treating Soon Shin like she's now worth something... simply because she now believes Soon Shin shares her blood. Ugh, so frustrating.

3) Jun Ho's father forcing Chan Woo into that incredibly awkward dinner. Poor Chan Woo's discomfort was palpable - I just hope he tells Yoo Shin about it before she finds out from some other source. And that Jun Ho's father doesn't try to matchmake... because Chan Woo would probably rather quit than be forced to break up with Yoo Shin to date Yi Jung (... right?).

Thankfully there are still awesome characters and moments between the characters... like Jin Wook and his interactions with Hye Shin (and the physicality the actor puts into his character - that head-bob and jump when he was standing behind Jun Ho, trying to see what Jun Ho was trying to see... I LOLed.) and Jun Ho trying (so. badly.) to get back into Soon Shin's good graces, and Yoo Shin giving in on the little things to keep the peace. And that's enough to keep me watching. :)

Thanks for the recap, javabeans!

Totally agree about Mom. I'm not complaining too much because good god, anything that makes her bearable is something I'm ALL FOR. But that's the biggest weakness in this drama, I think: characters sometimes change too abruptly and too obviously in service of the plot. Mi-ryung knows that Soon-shin's her daughter now, so to give that plot line more substance, we need an adoptive mom who actually seems to care about her kid again.

I can fill in enough gaps for it to make emotional sense, but I feel like it's taking more effort than it should.

*nods*

The problem is, it really *is* too sudden, and far too convenient. If she'd blown up in the beginning and then softened episode by episode, then fine, but she's gone too far to be redeemed (in my eyes, as a viewer - the family don't seem to care) by a declaration of 'she's my daughter and I (suddenly) love her (again)'.

I'm trying to put myself in Mom's place, but I can't, because I just. Don't. Get it. *sighs* This drama is giving me emotional whiplash.

That could be a possibility but I don't think so.
I don't think she's that cold-hearted.
Would you say nothing if someone did that for you?

If she really wanted nothing to do with him. She could say something that would cut him to the core. For some reason she has that effect on him.

He always ends up thinking about what she said. I think it's because he knows that it comes straight from her heart ...soul... something pure in any case.

So if she wanted to, she knows how to end it. For now she's going to play the waiting game. I just want to see what creative things he does to impress/grovel/apologize/etc. It's gonna be ... ♥u♥

Y/Y?

I don't think she's playing a 'waiting game'. She's made clear to him his actions have hurt her and she's told him to leave her alone, and then walked off (both in the bench scene and the mountain scene, and also hanging up on him on the phone).

From my book, that's 'ending it'. What else is she supposed to do? She's not giving him any 'hope', or anything that would indicate that she's just playing a waiting game with him right now.

If he put something additional on the USB (which I hadn't considered), well, I don't think it would necessarily be cold-hearted for her to say nothing. At this point anything he does will still feel like a lie to her. After all, she has just been hurt very badly, she's not going to say "oh, thank you for.... that's so sweet".

After all, she has just been hurt very badly, she’s not going to say “oh, thank you for…. that’s so sweet”.

Exactly. I think it might be enough for her to go off on him in her own way. It is all but guaranteed to get some sort of reaction from her. Even silence speaks volumes, right? And if silence doesn't work, I'm sure someone could make it CRYSTAL clear for him... I'm keeping my fingers crossed because that would be XDDD

Also, silence doesn't necessarily mean done. It could also mean pause/time-out (at least I hope so anyway).

When all of this started, even if his motives weren't as pure as hers initially, he got proof from her and was pleasantly surprised...

Now that the cat's out of the bag (so to speak), he's more than welcome to walk away. She'll lick her wounds (as what I think she's doing now) and will eventually move on. But if he keeps coming back for her ...after everything, what will that say? I'm sure they'll figure it out. :3

Maybe during this upcoming phase of it, there may be a teeny weeny itsy bitsy part of her motive that could be described as a bit ...ummm... negative. But I think that this will be where she gets her "proof of purchase" from him. What will/can she say when he finally proves receipts don't lie?

At the end of the day, she told him that he helped her unlock/tap into something she didn't give voice to (probably ever). If that were me, there'd be a part of me that will always be grateful to him (regardless of his original motives). That part will always have a soft spot for him. But that's way way WAY deep down. Below the "You broke it. You made it worse. This really hurts. :( I trusted you cuz... But you're not a wizard, you're just a bad man." & the "Just-you-wait-and-I'm-gonna-make-you-dance-like-a-marionnette, Puppet!" ...(for lack of a better term) layers.

Besides, if she does nothing to get him back (because getting him back is definitely coming), but older sisters find out... Ohmy...!!! A mess. A glorious hilarious mess! I CAN'T wait!!!

More than Words is perfect for a stripped down acoustic. But that doesn't mean it can't be...remixed. :)

And a possible harmonized version with... would be... :3

Maybe he'll chose another song entirely for the USB. It's one thing to practice because you haven't been at it in a while. It's another when you're making it official.

Who knows maybe that song will be apart of a playlist?? *fingers crossed* ...If that's the case, then I wonder if it'll be all love song.... or sume variety too.

What the???... Here I am talking like it's 100% definitely going to be on the USB. ...Wishful thinking, maybe. I'm sure that whatever is on there she'll be blown away. I know I would be. :) Same for you?

So the truth is starting to come out! Finally. I wish everyone would learn the truth, so then Soon-shin could find out. But then we're left wondering who hr father is. I still have my doubts about Chang-hoon being the dad. Or any of the other older men in the show. I still think that the dad has yet to make an appearance, but I do think it was the driver of the car who hit Chang-hoon. I just have a feeling.

Mi-ryung's reaction to the truth was really annoying and disappointing. Seriously, her biological daughter shows up unknowingly and Mi-ryung's a major bitch to her, even after she finds out. She's so freaking lonely, that she lets Yeon-ah call her "Mom". No matter what Mi-ryung says, I do think she regrets giving up her baby. Actions speak louder than words. If she had no regrets, why would she get drunk all the time?

I'm really loving Jun-ho trying to get Soon-shin to talk to him. He's so adorkable. I love that Young-hoon and Jae-bum keep stonewalling him from seeing her at the restaurant. Even Bread Man does it at the house. Win, win, win! I just wish Jun-ho could work up the courage to tell Soon-shin how he feels and that he wants her to return to acting. I hope she does, because that's the whole premise of the show, right?

Anyway, about Mom. I'm really getting fed up with her character. She's blaming Soon-shin for things that are beyond her control. She can't do anything about her birth mother, It's the parents who raised her that she loves and wants the approval of the most. Her acting like the past 10 or whatever episodes didn't happen is beyond annoying. It's freaking messed up.

I'm looking forward to more of this show! Thanks for the recap, Javabeans!

Episode 21 comments: Can I just say that I am so very glad that Karma FINALLY showed her beautiful face.....and it looks like she brought a ton of liquor with her.
*I have been waiting since Saturday to post that*
I am a bit irked that mom got off easy after her bad mothering over the past few weeks. No apology is just not acceptable to me. She said and did many hurtful things and should feel very ashamed. But there she is smiling and walking with Soon Shin like nothing ever happened.
Young-hoon… I luff you… can you be my oppa? I loved when he banned Jun-ho from the restaurant. I don’t think that he has any romantic feelings for Soon Shin, just more that younger friend who doesn’t have the same experiences with these people and he has been trying to keep her from getting hurt or hurt more.
Episode 22 comments: It cracked me up when Bread Man was playing the oppa. I need more of the interactions between the guys like this. I also love that Jun-ho is a stuttering, bumbling idiot with Soon Shin now (well more then he used to be). I do wish he would just speak his mind and really apologize to her, even if he has to stutter through it.
I thought it was sweet that Yoo-Shin wanted to lessen the fighting with Chicken Ajumma. It may be unconscious right now, but I think she is slowly moving toward wanting something a bit more long-term with Chan-woo. I personal thought she looked cute in that outfit (minus those shoes… where do you even find those?). I am still very new to learning Korean, but I noticed that her choice of wording, demeanor, and tone changed for just a minute with Chicken Ajumma. She was defiantly trying to be more respectful. At least until she got yelled at, then it was back to her old self.
I have to give props to Chan-woo for sticking out at that dinner. How rude! They all know he is in a relationship but they are still going to push little miss spoiled on to him. Grrrr…
I agree with the commenter above about wanting to push Yeon-ah off a bridge. Though there should be some sharks or something along those lines below. I had kind of started not to hate her any more. But all it took was that one nasty look she gave Soon Shin for me to jump right back to hating her.
I really enjoy this show. It is a nice modern break from the sageuks I’m watching right now. All in all I can’t wait for Saturday to get here!

I am still enjoying this show, but I would like to see more of Joon Ho and Soon Shin's relationship (professional and personal), and more of Soon Shin working towards her dream and gaining confidence in herself. I thought this drama would be more like Gloria in that aspect, but it isn't. Soon Shin needs to stop working in that restaurant (...although I love Young hoon) and start actually acting.

Way, way(!) too much time is spent on the moms and the birth secret. At this point the birth secret seems to be the biggest thing driving the plot and our drama's namesake, Soon Shin, is clueless about it.

I also hope for more Bread Man and Woo joo because they are hilarious together, really Bread Man + anyone = awesome XD. The little actress playing Woo joo is doing a great job. When she cries, wow, it's like a real kid crying! I feel so bad for her. And it makes me hate her awful dad that much more.

...

I think Jae Bum needs to fall for Yi Jung and drive her crazy with his obsessiveness. Ha! That will teach her!

Yeon Ah needs to go away. She can take Mi Ryung with her. What a wretched pair. Grandma can join them and make a trio.

I'm just not going to watch this show anymore. I do want to know what happens, so I'm going to keep reading these recaps. But this type of drama just isn't what I want to watch. I feel frustrated and annoyed with all the characters as well as the storyline. Although it has improved in picking up the pace well, I still feel that it's being dragged out. I'm not liking the characters because when I watch them, they're all not sticking up for themselves. There are times I want to yell at the screen because the characters are being (in my opinion) so damn pathetic. But it's not in a way I want to root for them. Except Yoo Shin. I really like her character now because she's strong, but not too stubborn. She knows who she is and what she wants. Even though her character has growing and maturing to do over the episodes, I like that she can stick up for herself, and still maintain her sassiness.
