You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 19-20

I think we’ve gotten past the slump: This week’s episodes move things along quickly, outing some secrets, changing relationship dynamics, pushing along romances, and giving us a glimpse at a world where Bitter Mom is Slightly Less Bitter Mom. I’m not sure that we’ll ever have her being warm and sweet again, but it’ll take this development as a step in the right direction. Huzzah.

EPISODES 19-20

So Yeon-ah wants Jun-ho back, and now Jun-ho knows it. After Mi-ryung drops that bomb (though I’m pretty sure Jun-ho’s the only one surprised by this), she fills Yeon-ah in and advises her to take active steps to pursue the relationship.

Jun-ho’s immediate reaction is to be pleased, and he confers with Young-hoon about giving the relationship a shot. Ever our voice of wisdom, Young-hoon suggests that perhaps it’s not possible to just return to the past (and Jun-ho asks naively why not).

Asked about Soon-shin, Jun-ho says he’ll continue with the plan, not realizing until Young-hoon points it out that the bet is over, and hence his reasons (or excuses, ahem) to launch Soon-shin as an actress are gone. If he isn’t going to see this through, Young-hoon warns, end it right away and don’t hurt an innocent person.

Dinner at the Lee residence is a scene I wish I could fast-forward, but since I can’t I’ll describe it so you can. No reason all of us should suffer. Mom is handing out the bowls of rice to everyone in the family and skips right over Soon-shin, which is so cold that even Grandma shoots her an Oh no you di’n’t face.

Mom just looks up blankly like she didn’t even notice she had a third daughter and says Soon-shin can get her own rice. I guess we should be glad she hasn’t banished Soon-shin from meals entirely?

In-sung tells Jun-ho about the rumors painting Soon-shin as his casting-couch girlfriend, and he sputters that it’s ridiculous. Perhaps, but that doesn’t stop it from being believed.

Soon-shin doesn’t feel good about hearing how she took the video from the other actress, and hesitantly suggests to Jun-ho that perhaps she ought not do the video. After all, she doesn’t want to steal roles.

Given the lengths to which Jun-ho has gone to get her the role, he is frustrated with her sudden turnaround and argues that winning is a skill too. In his exasperation he barks, “Fine, don’t do it!” but clearly doesn’t mean it, worrying after the fact that she might actually quit.

Things come to a head with Hye-shin—finally, and thankfully. She keeps up the pretense that she’s still happily married, but the strain gets to Woo-joo, who is resentful to both Bread Man (for encroaching on Mom’s affections) and her father (for obvious reasons).

When Hye-shin takes a call from her ex, she rips into him for ignoring Woo-joo on Children’s Day. Hye-shin hands the phone off to Woo-joo, who barks at her father, “Don’t call us anymore. We’ll live fine on our own. Dad, you live well with that ajumma.” Just our luck, Mom comes by and hears the phone conversation from the hallway, just as Woo-joo starts sobbing, “Did you think I wouldn’t know why you and Mom split up?”

So the secret is out. Mom asks if the cause of the split was another woman, a subject that’s close to her own heart. Thus when Grandma starts insisting that divorce is out of the question, Mom cuts in and tells Hye-shin she did the right thing. Yay for maternal support, which I wasn’t sure we’d ever see from her again.

Poor Bread Man comes upon Woo-joo crying in the yard, and thanks to his perennially terrible timing, Yoo-shin arrives and thinks he’s harassing her. Aw.

Grandma wants to get the couple back together and tries to get Mom on her side. Instead, Mom calls Bastard Ex and rips into him for being a terrible human being and general asshat until he hangs up on her.

Mom is perhaps displacing some of her personal hurts onto the ex, but here’s one occasion where I’m fine having her misdirect her anger because at least the jerk has earned it. Mom tells Grandma to give up her hopes for a reunion, saying that men like that never quit being men like that. Truer words, y’all.

Both Yoo-shin and Soon-shin try to comfort Mom, but now Mom turns that anger onto Soon-shin (a displacement I am not okay with) and snaps at her, “What do you know? How can you understand how I feel?”

Soon-shin checks on her unni, who admits that her marriage was really hard. But she’s also adopted a philosophical tone about why it failed, admitting that she felt a constant pressure to be perfect and do things as they “should” be done—which includes marrying him. So she doesn’t blame him entirely.

Hye-shin advises Soon-shin to follow her heart in everything; don’t only do what people tell her to do: “Don’t disappoint Mom like me.”

Jun-ho tells himself he doesn’t care whether Soon-shin quits, though his gaze keeps wandering around when he’s in her orbit. Which turns out to be rather inconvenient when he’s on a date with Yeon-ah, who really should’ve known better than to suggest lunch at The One Restaurant To Rule Them All.

Now that they’re working at being back together, Yeon-ah reminisces about their past, remembering how they were poor but happy. Jun-ho notes pointedly that at the time, she’d been sick of eating the cup ramyun and vending machine coffee that she waxes poetic about now.

She asks him to play his guitar for her sometime, but he turns her down flat—he doesn’t play anymore, and his fingers are out of practice. She wheedles, but he says that the passing of time renders some things impossible, and we’re not just talking about the guitar anymore now. Yeon-ah says that “it” (his guitar skills, but also the elephant they’re beating this bush around, aka their relationship) will return to its place because it’s familiar. He merely wonders, “Will it?”

Soon-shin arrives at the restaurant while the other servers gossip about the couple, and seeing them together brings down her spirits. If only she realized Jun-ho spends more of his time looking for her than at his date.

Manager Hwang hears that there were no orphan baby girls matching the criteria he supplied, which has him uneasy. As well it should.

Yeon-ah tells Mi-ryung about her lunch date and says they’re working their way toward reconciliation. She thanks Mi-ryung for her help and gets back the reply, “It’s only natural for a mother to help her daughter.” Oh, but just wait for the irony bitchslap when you realize you’ve helped your surrogate daughter by sabotaging your biological one.

Yi-jung pops by the clinic again, and Chan-woo has to refrain from rolling his eyes. He treats her curtly and confirms that yes, he does have a girlfriend… and then Dr. Shin comes along and he realizes that Yi-jung is the boss’s daughter. You can practically hear the monologue running through his head: Crap. I have to be nice to her now?

Yi-jung whines to daddy to help her suit with Chan-woo, calling him her ideal type and her fate. To my relief, though, Dr. Shin shakes his head no: “I’m too embarrassed of you to introduce you to him.” HA. Admittedly, it’s unsporting for a father to say this to his daughter, but she’s the one making a pest of herself at the workplace. She needs a reality smackdown.

Chan-woo picks up Yoo-shin after she has a round of drinks with her colleagues, and she sighs about sister’s divorce. She swears she won’t ever marry, saying that it’s pointless, which has Chan-woo balking that there are plenty of marrieds who are happy. Yoo-shin retorts that it’s still a gamble, and one she won’t risk her life on.

That dampens Chan-woo’s mood considerably, so Yoo-shin gives him a surprise smooch on the cheek, telling him not to be mad. Kiss-kiss-kiss. It’s cute.

Chan-woo leans in for a proper kiss… only to get shoved back in alarm: His mother is approaching. Talk about a buzzkill. In a panic, they duck down and hurriedly drive off, leaving Chicken Ajumma scratching her head in confusion. It’s a good thing Chan-woo’s got such a clean record about being honest with the family, since they decide that Mom must’ve seen wrong.

Soon-shin runs into In-sung and tells him she isn’t going to do the music video. He can’t believe it and gives her an earful about how this was all because of her mother in the first place. Soon-shin hadn’t known the particulars of the one-month agreement and reacts in surprise as In-sung informs her that Mom made that deal as a way to force Soon-shin to quit, only Jun-ho is working his butt off to prove Mom wrong. But now Soon-shin won’t even try, after all that…?

She runs into Chan-woo on the way home, and admits her dilemma to him. (Jun-ho sees them chatting pleasantly and grumbles to himself, though he tells himself he doesn’t care. Suuure.) Chan-woo suggests that doing the video would be best, because refusing to do it won’t fix anything, and it’ll just make things harder for the guy who worked to support her. He even concedes that Jun-ho’s a lot more loyal than he looked, revising his opinion of him.

Mi-ryung throws a dinner party with Yeon-ah, all in the name of cozying things up with Jun-ho and family. They invite his mother and Yi-jung for an elegant evening at home, and chat pleasantly—everyone but Jun-ho, who is too distracted to pay attention.

He excuses himself to make a call—to Soon-shin, of course. He starts to berate her for quitting, for missing her meeting with the director, for going out on dates instead of rehearsing. Ordering her to stay put, he heads out using work as his excuse, though it doesn’t take a genius for the ladies to guess that Jun-ho went to see “her.”

Jun-ho meets Soon-shin all in a fluster (which she seems to reciprocate) and trips over his words as he suggests dinner. There’s an adorable moment when he turns away from her and unleashes this goofy smile, which he has to wipe off his face before facing her again. So cute.

He tells her that if she does a good job, nobody can say anything about her. He stumbles through the encouragement, “You can do… a good job. I… have f-faith in you.” All while looking everywhere but at her.

They both loosen up over dinner, where she asks why he quit singing and pokes fun by saying he must’ve sucked at it. She’s totally winding him up and he’s just falling for it—when she asks whether he plays guitar, he says self-importantly, “Sure, I do.” He doesn’t pick up on her teasing when she goads, “Chan-woo oppa was really good at guitar…” Immediately, he retorts, “I’m better.”

She tells him to show her, and he surprises her by saying that if she does well with the music video, he will.

It’s such a sweet and smile-inducing dynamic that it’s a shame it has to end so quickly, but we can’t let the angst monster get too restless: Mi-ryung is surprised to hear that Soon-shin is doing the video after all, and decides to “help” by offering up some cold hard truth. With that, she informs Soon-shin of the bet. (End of Episode 19.)

What makes Mi-ryung so crafty (and successful at playing saboteur) is that all of her meddling is based in truth. She doesn’t have to invent lies when the truth is just as damning, when wielded with a manipulative hand. Under the guise of “for your own good” concern, she warns Soon-shin not to fall for Jun-ho’s lies, because he was only taking care of her because of the bet, not because he really believes she has talent. Furthermore, that bet was motivated by his desire to get Yeon-ah back. Ouch. Wrong, but also true.

This helpful little pep talk occurs at the salon just before Soon-shin is slated to begin filming, which wrecks her mood—the scene calls for hopeful excitement, and she produces tears. Particularly with Jun-ho sitting by proudly, watching her film.

The director calls for a break and Jun-ho talks to her encouragingly, assuming that she is just freezing up out of nerves, and tells her she can do it.

Grandma still has hope of getting Hye-shin’s husband back in the marriage, and asks Bread Man for help calling internationally. Jin-wook complies and starts to hand Grandma the phone, only to have the husband cut him off and hang up. Seeing how hopeful Grandma is, Jin-wook doesn’t have the heart to tell her that the ex is being a douchebag and pretends that the phone connection is bad. Aw.

Later that afternoon, Jin-wook sees Hye-shin walking by his bakery and calls her inside, wanting to cheer her up somehow. First he lies that he “accidentally” made tons of extra sweet buns by mistake, and then enlists her aid in bread-making, pretending his arm is injured.

With that, he sets her to beating up a loaf of dough, encouraging her to give it a real strong whack. He prods her to think of the dough as a hateful jerk she can’t stand, and she sends the dough slamming into the board. Ha.

Mom tells Chicken Ajumma about Hye-shin’s divorce, recalling when Bastard Ex was declaring undying devotion to her. She says bitterly that her own husband must have been nice to her purely out of guilt, and Chicken Ajumma advises Mom to get a DNA test and move on, because she’ll develop a mental illness if she keeps this up. Lordy, when did she become the sensible one?

Soon-shin wraps up the music video shoot, and thankfully things come out well. The director admits to Jun-ho that he was worried at first, but she ended up being fine. Jun-ho brightens to hear it and invites Soon-shin to a fancy lunch, only to have her walk off listlessly.

Yeon-ah arrives by surprise to take him to lunch, only to have Jun-ho fob her off with an excuse that he’s busy. Yeon-ah then finds Soon-shin and congratulates her on her first shoot. She refers to the bet openly, now that Mi-ryung has outed it, and says that she’d only meant it as a joke. After all, they both know that the idea of Soon-shin being a successful actress is too ridiculous for words. She says with a smile.

Jun-ho goes home and pulls out his guitar, which I assume has been gathering dust for years. Are you practicing for Soon-shin, you dork? Frustratingly he doesn’t actually sing properly (just half-hums the song “More Than Words”), but I’m going to believe they’re just saving the money shot for later. Right?

Soon-shin confides the whole bet story to best friend Chan-mi, who is outraged on her behalf. However, she asks something Soon-shin hadn’t considered: “Then was all of Song Mi-ryung’s praise just because of that?”

That hits Soon-shin hard, and she barrels out of there to ask Mi-ryung just that. Did she praise her just because Jun-ho asked her to? She says it’s important that she hear the answer, because Mi-ryung was the first one to show her recognition and the joy of acting. Confirming it is the fastest way to get what Mi-ryung wants, so she just says sorry and advises her to put this all behind her as quickly as she can.

And while Soon-shin is still there, her mother arrives, thinking to give Mi-ryung a piece of her mind. But Soon-shin thinks she’s here about the acting thing and drags her mother out, saying that she’ll quit so there’s no need for confrontation.

Crying, Soon-shin apologizes to her mother for being a bad daughter, saying that Mom was right all along—they were all just using her. Like a fool, she fell for it—and yet, even more foolishly, she still wants to believe it was true and that she has talent.

To give Mom some credit, she does look moved by Soon-shin’s misery, especially when Soon-shin cries, “I really wanted to do well this time and make you happy.” But it’s too bad she pushes down that sympathy and hardens her face anyway, not betraying any of that feeling.

Manager Hwang sees them leaving the house, which makes him wonder. And then he hears that his contact (Mi-ryung’s childhood friend) has had a reporter sniffing around about Mi-ryung’s past. He asks her to confirm whether Soon-shin’s Mom was the person who came around asking about Kyung-sook and her baby, and sweats bullets when he gets the confirmation.

Mi-ryung has now gotten what she wanted by driving Soon-shin to quit the industry, but she’s not satisfied. She notes that she has a curious way of unsettling her, and therefore instructs Manager Hwang to keep feeding those rumors so “that girl won’t be able to skulk around in this neighborhood again.” Dayum. She’s mostly acting out of paranoia, wanting all connections to her hit-and-run case out of her orbit, but that last bit is definitely crossing over into spiteful territory.

With rumors fueling the fire, the music video uproar grows with the band’s fan club getting their panties in a twist about the no-name who would dare sully oppa’s music video. Sigh, fangirls. They even show up at the restaurant asking after Soon-shin, acting sweet and friendly to get access to her and then pelting her with eggs.

Soon-shin says that she’ll quit everything now, so that’ll settle the rumors. Jun-ho’s shocked, thinking her decision is purely motivated by the music video incident, and assures her that this is nothing to get upset about.

She challenges him angrily, turning it around on him and pointing out his failures to fix the problems. Like with he audition, and the video casting. Jun-ho acknowledges that she has a point, but assures her that he’ll find her something else: Just trust him.

Only she asks accusingly, “How can I trust you?”

Soon-shin gives Young-hoon her notice to quit working at the restaurant, and confirms that he knew about the bet too. He’s stunned to realize she knows, and dismayed when she accuses him of enjoying how stupid she must have been thinking it was all real. He apologizes for not telling her, but couldn’t bring himself to burst her bubble when she was so happy about this path.

Chicken Man worries more about the birth secret, but Chicken Ajumma says that since Soon-shin is quitting acting, the matter is all resolved. Everything will die down as long as they keep their mouths shut. Good luck with that.

Thus they’re both jumpy and weird when the Lee girls show up at the restaurant for a sisterly drink. It’s Hye-shin who picks the place, which has Yoo-shin frustrated because of the whole sneaking-around-with-Chan-woo thing.

So when ajumma chastises Yoo-shin for drinking and tells her to marry in that nagging ajumma-knows-best tone, Yoo-shin can’t suppress her temper and talks back. Ajumma says Yoo-shin would be a great catch if she fixed her personality, and that she would hate to have her for daughter-in-law. Yoo-shin retorts that she’d hate to have ajumma for her mother-in-law. Ha, this is actually entertaining, because at least Yoo-shin stands up to Chicken Ajumma. Chan-woo’s gonna have so much trouble peacemaking, muahaha.

Speaking of whom, Chan-woo hears about the ruffled feathers and calls Yoo-shin out that night to apologize for his mother and asks her to understand. He pulls the ol’ sneak-peck-on-cheek, which is considerably effective in melting her annoyance—at least until she gasps to realize Bread Man has seen the whole exchange.

They stop him to ask him to keep it a secret, but Bread Man just deadpans, “I saw nothing.” He goes home wondering why this family has so many secrets, then wistfully thinks that everybody’s dating. And that makes him think of Hye-shin.

One good sign: Mom tucks Soon-shin in that night. It’s a tiny gesture, but given our lack of any maternal warmth from her, I’m taking this as a sign that the worst is behind us. And not a moment too soon.

Manager Hwang suggests to Mi-ryung to leave Soon-shin alone, rather than pushing forward with her sabotage mission. After all, Soon-shin is quitting and there seems to be no inkling of the family making any connection about the accident. Mi-ryung would rather be safe than sorry, and in this case it means crushing potential risks completely.

Despite all urgings to give up on Soon-shin, Jun-ho doesn’t appear to be any closer to actually letting go. Thus he’s flummoxed when Soon-shin’s mother arrives to hand him an envelope of money to repay the contract fee and end their connection.

As Mom leaves, she sees Mi-ryung arriving and informs her that Soon-shin has quit. Mi-ryung is pleased to hear it and congratulates Mom, since this is what she wanted, isn’t it?

That riles Mom’s temper, and she yells after her, “Who are you to tell me that?” Is that all she can say after trampling over someone’s child like that? She screeches that the only reason Mi-ryung can say that is because she has no children of her own, and warns her not to live like that.

Jun-ho practices the guitar some more, but abandons it to go looking for Soon-shin at the restaurant. He complains that she’s driving him nuts and asks how she can be so weak-willed as to quit acting because of that one fangirl incident, and Young-hoon realizes he doesn’t know about the bet.

But before he can explain that, Yeon-ah shows up with her impeccably inconvenient timing. She notices his callused fingers and think she’s practicing guitar because of her request, only to have him answer that he promised Soon-shin he’d play for her if her video went well. Her face falls.

Young-hoon tells him Soon-shin quit the restaurant, and Yeon-ah clues him in, saying that Soon-shin found out about the bet. A beat as he registers what this means, and then he whirls to go out.

Yeon-ah grabs his wrist (heh) and first asks him to stay, then gives him an ultimatum: If he goes now, she won’t see him again.

Jun-ho pushes her hand off, and starts running for the door.

COMMENTS

I’ve said this before, but it continues to be true: This drama is pretty predictable and the story points are things we expect, but they’re still really very satisfying. By all rights it shouldn’t be—I would think that any drama where I expect something to happen and get that very thing would be a letdown. It’s the endearing characters of this one that make the anticipation enjoyable, though, and thus the payoff gratifies rather than disappoints.

For instance, Jun-ho’s continued denseness regarding his feelings for Soon-shin. Yeon-ah can see it, Mi-ryung can see it, Young-hoon can see it, even In-sung can probably see it. The only person who can’t see it who should is Soon-shin, but she’s feeling too battered and insecure, so it’s understandable that those sentiments take the fore. And we’ve seen this trajectory play out in numerous dramas before, so we all know the drill: Clueless hero ignores, clueless hero denies, clueless hero finally pushed to realization by outside forces.

But it’s still such fun to watch Jun-ho lying to himself despite the obvious signs, like the fact that he’d pick up his guitar for Soon-shin but not his girlfriend, or that he’s never present in the moment when he’s with Yeon-ah but instead looking for excuses to remove himself. He’s gotten exactly what he wanted, and there’s nothing like that to jolt you into seeing that you never wanted it in the first place.

Bread Man Jin-wook continues to be another favorite, and while he won me over with his goofy comic antics, it’s really the deeper character stuff that makes me love him. The more we see of him, the more he proves himself to be a stand-up guy, and he does it in exactly the opposite way that our opportunists like Mi-ryung and Yeon-ah do: out of the public eye. I love that he does nice things not for any sort of recognition—in fact, most of the time his deeds aren’t recognized—but to make people feel better. Like softening the blow for Granny, or giving Hye-shin an emotional outlet without confronting her about it in a way that would mortify her.

In that way Jin-wook is actually a lot like dearly departed dad, waiting undemandingly until Hye-shin is ready to face things in her own way. If Hye-shin picked her first husband based on what she thought others wanted of her, at least her own instincts are picking well the second time around. All she has to do is learn to listen to them.

For the first time in a while, I’m actually perking up in anticipation for the next episode, because I’m invested in where this new turn is taking us. (Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t disliked previous episodes; they just haven’t had that addictive marathon quality to them.) With Soon-shin fully aware of the bet and Jun-ho’s initial motivations, the power dynamic has swung back all the way around to her side again. I don’t see romantic relationships in terms of power, so it’s not because of the power shift that I’m liking it. But recall back in earlier days when she had Jun-ho constantly off-guard and off-kilter, and how much fun it was to see him struggling to assert himself. Then she decided to take his terms seriously and started listening to him (which carries its own brand of sweetness, but lacks the humor of earlier moments). Now that she’s going to be pushing him away completely, I can’t wait to see how he deals with it. Some groveling might be in order.

Ep. 20, that last scene: le shit (pardon my language), it just hit the fan and it was nice to see how panicked JH was. I wonder how long it will take him to realize that he is falling in love with SS (and she with him. I wonder how long it will take her as well).

I totally love bread-man!!!! Such a heartwarming and winning character :-). Also, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the way JH slowly removed YA's hand from his wrist, as if to make it absolutely clear that HE IS NOT INTO HER (which we know, he isn't). I just loved how much time they spent on it and how it was filmed (rave over). SO. GOOD!!!!

As bread-man said, "it must be spring!" People are falling in love in this drama, and it is nice to see how it is happening.

Can I say the last scene of episode 20 is hands down my favorite scene in any drama. The look on Jun-ho's face as he makes a mad dash out of the restaurant is priceless. He said so much without saying anything. He is an amazing actor. Thanks for the recap!

Exactly!!! I replayed that scene! I love his panicked expression as he runs off. I really enjoyed these two episodes. And that smile he smiled when he turned away from soon shin after asking her to dinner was just adorable.

Thank goodness for mom thawing a little. Love bread man and chan woo oppa too :).

Thanks for the recaps :)

I was worried he'd not push her away, as the storyline in some of these dramas often is taking the ex back for a while. (Well, who knows, we might still get that, but I REALLY hope we don't.)

I'm surprised Yoon-ah thought she could issue an ultimate (I guess she was desperate). Jun-ho hasn't looked at her, and that's been obvious for a while now (and not just from the dinner walk-out and the restaurant meet-up). I guess Yoon-ah must truly think that Soon Shin is so below her that the fact that Jun-ho could choose her over herself is just too inconceivable. It's funny when you think about it though, given that when JH and YA did have a relationship, both were poor and "status less". JH was of course pretending only (keeping his rich family background hidden), but he was willing to be with her then, while she dropped him the moment she hit it big. You'd think YA would know that JH is not one to care however "socially low" a person is, and that SS therefore would never be "not good enough" for him.

I love Jun-ho's honesty, when he just says/shows what he feels without actually realising what it means. The way he's constantly looking for Soon Shin and the ways his eyes follow her when she is there. And the whole "I'm practicing the guitar for Soon Shin" and things of the sort, hahahaha. In other dramas, the guy would have pretended, he meanwhile just says it. He'll need someone to hit him over the head though to make him understand that he essentially just admitted to liking Soon Shin.

We have not yet reached the halfway episode thus i feel like YA will recede her earlier ultimatum regarding the break up. I think the next episodes will be the predictable hero-ex be back together. Then there is that rumor that JH needs to fix regarding SS being his lover thus I get the feeling the he will OUT his relationship with YA to protect SS -- the usual noble idiotic sacrifice and all. He will play nice as the good boyfriend and also play silent supporter to SS as he battled the wall of distrust from her.

Everything feels predictable yet I feel excited nonetheless. the main leads are just winning points for me for being just likeable.

With MR, will her day of reckoning will come. the truth will come tumbling down and when it does, her high chair wont be as pretty as it is right now. -- all her evil plotting and selfish sacrifice revealed.
I know that as the heroin, SS will find it in her heart to forgive her birth mother but I am crossing my fingers for about 10 episode of misery for MR.

I don't actually see the hero ex back together happening here. His character doesn't seem to hard-wired that way. He is too honest and he has already chosen Soon Shin. Unless the drama writers throw one of those "go back to your ex least your true love be hurt by the truth" scenes in there. Which would suck , cause then it would be like every other drama. This drama is predictable yes, but honest and I hope the writers don't screw that up. I think the wall will come from soon Shin and not from Jun-ho.

Okay, okay. I love this drama, it's so endearing even though it's predictable.

And I love IU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY BTW girl (although you'll never see this message, but moving on...). However, I'm seeing some cracks with her acting. She's engaging, I love her emotional acting (they're sometimes subtle, heartfelt, they never feel like she's acting), but then there are the smaller moments that I feel she sort of fails to deliver. The scene where she was looking straight at Junho when he called her to stay put felt like she was too aware of her facial expression.

But, still, she's doing a good job in her first lead role. I'm hoping she'll get better as the series progresses.

Also, Bread man is so adorable, as is Junho. This episode didn't have enough cute, I'm hoping there will be more soon! I need it!!!

TBH she is great at quiet crying scenes, however the scene she cries to mom about giving up after meeting Mi Ryung wasn't so well done, and I could not feel the scene or get moved. That scene looked fake/forced.

well, it depends on someone view actually..as for me, I totally moved by IU's acting during her crying scene when she cried at her mom about Mi Ryung..I can feel her emotion & heartbreak when she expressing those scenes..after all, this is her first lead role & she definitely improving as the episode goes by :)

same, i felt it looked fake too and couldn't tear up the way i did during joo won's tearful outburst @ his brothers and parents in ogajgyo brothers.
besides the crying scenes, IU is doing well in all other aspects. tho she still carries an idol aura... maybe i can't shake off her idol image since this drama seems to be made for her... she has to be innocent, pure, a "fantasy" etc and then there's the rumor that she's a flirt (w/ the CEO)......... ~_~

That's funny, I have it the other way around. When IU quietly cries, I often think they used the tear-drops. But this scene with her mother I found very good. Especially when LSS says that she wants to believe she is talented... and there is finally some empathy from her mother.

This pair of episodes was good--lots of dramatic tensions released as various secrets were revealed. With Hye Shin's divorce out in the open, her story line with Bread Man can really kick in. The reveal of the bet will lead to more tension, but definitely movement. I think Bread Man seeing the smooch was my favorite "secret", and I think that's going to lead to more of the Yoo Shin / Bread Man fighting.

From now on, I'm just going to refer to this drama as "You're the Best, Bread Man."

That dough therapy scene was so transparent, and so unbearably cute. I could watch Bread Man's rambling and Hye-shin's bemused smiles for hours. The surreptitious Yu-shin kiss scene was also hilarious, with Bread Man breaking out his nervous hands. That guy steals every scene he's in.

Also, when douchey Manager Hwang says to you, "Hey, aren't you being too douchey?", that's when you know you've crossed the line.

First of all, Bread Man Jin-wook is perfection. He is the sweetest thing ever. When he took Hye-shin into the bakery to help with his bread, I was just aww-ing all over the place. He's a good man, that one.

Also, all my previous anger for mom has now changed its course. I seethe every time I see Yeon-ah and Mi-ryeong on screen. All that's left for mom at the moment is frustration. But still a whole lot of it.

All the relationships are building up nicely as we're about to hit the middle point of the drama.

Sad though that all the cute moments between Soon-shin and Jun-ho from episode 19 were quickly dashed by episode 20. I need more adorable banters between those two!

But yes, I agree, for the first time in a long time, I nearly screamed at how episode 20 ended. Just as he was about to run to Soon-shin... Omo. WHAT A WAY TO END IT, HUH.

Can it be next week yet?

Yes, the plot is predictable. But the elements that make the drama so watchable is the genuity behind the characters. It isn't that the characters are dense, it's just they are too self-engrossed to feel or even realise they are able to get out of their rut. Isn't this what happens to real people in real life?

Mom, Grandma, Hye Shin and Woo Joo are caught in their hapless, self-pity ruinous cycles. Jun-Ho and Yeon-ah are both on the polarised ends of the same spectrum: Jun-Ho thought what he wanted most is to get back together with Yeon-ah; Yeon-ah thought she could go back into a relationship with Jun-Ho. Mi-Ryung is living a self-imposed dream of yesteryear glamour and fame, and doing what she can to cling on to that. Yoo Shin is overly defensive and adamant over her "rights" in the relationship, needlessly putting her relationship to the test, too soon. Poor Soon Shin is always facing a endless cycle of "I told you so" and "You are never good enough".

And that predictability of the drama tell us that eventually what goes around comes around: people with big hearts will win other people over, in contrast, those scornful will have to be, as Mom said to Mi-Ryung, beware of retribution for what you did to others.

Mother was an improvement in these episodes but not by much. Soon-shin could have used a hug after she came from Mi-ryung's house but Mom was just looking at her. WTH?

Mi-ryung...ah why'd you have to tell Soon-shin about the bet? Thought she was too busy but she has time to interfere with someone else's life?

Kinda tired of Soon-shin quitting-not quitting-quitting. But this time I get why she'd quit but please let this be the last time. She can't just quit whenever something bad comes up.

Plus yay for the men in this drama! That last scene of Jun-ho pulling away from Yeon-ah was my favorite. Love Young-hoon, Chan-woo, and Bread Man's scenes too!

Agree with the quitting - not quitting thing!

I thought she realised her dream, I know she feels bad but didn't she successfully pull off the music video? And get praised by the director? She really needs to stop being so reliant on others and take her dream into her own hands!!!

While eating, when he bit into the pepper it almost seemed like a blooper that they decided worked and kept in. I thought the whole guitar comparison between CW and JH was funny ESP with JH's quick retort, "I'm better."

I kept waiting for Mom to tell SS to get out there and kick some acting butt and prove everyone wrong, just to spite MR. But I guess it's still too soon for that, huh? She will do it eventually though, right? I want so badly to see Mom start giving SS some support again. Guess I should just be grateful for the baby steps she took in ep.20.

I am loving this show. I almost didn't watch it because of the length of it, but man am I glad i did. And argh, it does such a great job of keeping you in suspense. When things went away from Soon Shin and Jun Ho in ep 20, and were focused on the others for a while, i just kept screaming "go back to Jun Ho! Someone has to tell him that she knows!", lol

And I don't think there's anything wrong with things being predictable if you would be disappointed if it didn't happen. Like the ending of Merlin. They should have gone with what everyone expected, but they didn't, and it was the worse for it.

They just needed Arthur to go back to Camelot and rule with Merlin by his side. That's literally all they needed to do, and we would have been happy. But instead, they decided that this Arthur wasn't the Arthur that the prophecies spoke about, and so Merlin had to wait hundreds of years, on his own, for the next Arthur to be born. It was just an unnecessary way to end the show.

Required fields are marked *

Thankyou for explaining that and as much as we would want such an ending it would be to fairy tailish.
Even I would have liked Arthur and Merlin to rule and serve for a long time but then that wouldn't have been the story that has been passed down through the ages.
Yes they took a lot of liberties even here but they also tried to keep to the spirit of the tales

For Instance Arthur was meant to die by the hands of Mordred and there were times that even though I knew that was bound to happen I wanted something to change so that fate would have been avoided somehow. Then after Arthur died like when Merlin sent him of there are slightly different variations in some he is alone in others he is escorted by three woman (lady in the lake, can't remember the second and the third was Morgana) According to some Morgana has redeemed herself or was never evil etc... So in ways that part was correct.
About Merlin waiting well he wasn't waiting for some other Arthur as this was the wrong one. He was waiting for this Arthur to return. Perhaps be magically revived, reborn or even cloned (get sci-fi while you are it) The dragon did say that Arthur was the future and something king meaning that it was the correct Arthur that he had served all along.

Though I do wonder how did Merlin survive that long to the present time :)

As you can see I did my research so while I would have liked your version as well they decided to go the other way maybe they can make a sequel someday. Continuing the adventure of Arthur and Merlin in the present day. Also now Arthur will have to adapt to modern day and everything may seem like magic to him :)
What do you think abut that L)

Required fields are marked *

I THINK THEY ARE PLANNING A SEQUEL!

0

Yeah, you're right, Arthur was always supposed to die. I guess it was more the fact that there was going to be another Arthur (i imagine they just mean reborn), and I always feel like those kind of endings are a cop out. Even if it's our Arthur being reborn, it's still not quite the same. And when you've become so invested in this particular Arthur, the fact that he will be back in the future doesn't make it any better.

I don't think they'll do a sequel though. At least, i hope they don't because it would ruin the whole feel of the first series. Modern Merlin and Arthur wouldn't work, lol

0

Sigh. I hate that you make sense. They really wouldnt work. But... OMG I STILL MISS MERLIN SOO MUCH!

First of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, IU-sshi!!!! <3
- kekekeke Young Hoon, 'ever the voice of reason', or maybe not reason, but just protecting and making sure Soon Shin doesn't get hurt cuz he luffs her (and I luff him for that...pffft!!! who am I kidding? I luff him just CUZ <3 )
- first (of many) scene of the day that made me cry: Woo Joo on the phone with her dad telling him to 'live happily with that ahjumma :,( I know just a little too, TOO well how that's like from personal experience...
- it was really sweet of Jun Ho to have unconsciously been looking around for Soon Shin on his date with Yeon Ah (albeit, making things awks), but in this scene, I feel that Show really puts it out there that Soon Shin is NOT invisible, and pathetic, and unsuccessful anymore :) As well, she's managed to make Jun Ho really notice her, like REALLY...and all there is to it now is to make his heart flutter keke
- baahahahahahahahahha "irony bitchslap" No truer words, Javabeans, no truer words n.n
- more, more, MOAR goofy smiling moments a la Jun Ho, pretty, please Show???
- awwww Jun Ho inviting Soon Shin to lunch, saying he'll buy her that rib eye that he promised from before n.n He remembers!!!!! So sweet!!!
- and then...... The tear-jerking scene happens...where Soon Shin is basically back to square one with battling self-esteem issues and feeling like she's hit rock bottom, again, and had been a bad daughter this whole time, to boot T.T
- the egging scene was PAINFUL to watch, then my heart skipped a happy beat to see Young Hoon and Jae Bum come to Soon Shin's rescue and the Jun Ho fumbling over her and seeing if she was hurt; and then in the office, I'm GLAD that Soon Shin threw (kind of) a fit at Jun Ho, and I sure as hell hope and wish the he is gonna have to work to rebuild her trust in him after toying with her for so long
- awwww Young Hoon getting upset and, and pretty panicky I'd say (cuz he's in luuuuuuurv), upon hearing Soon Shin that she's quitting, not only the whole being an actor thing but also working at the restauraunt..... SO. FREAKING. CUTE!!!!!!! <3 Have I mentioned that I luff him??? Yea, I do n.n
- Bread Man ajusshi speaks my mind in wondering why the Lee fam keeps so many stinkin secrets that could potentially help the sitch if it were all out in the open
- the last scene of episode 20 with all 3 of them there, DAEBAK!!!!! Young Hoon being all pissy at Jun Ho and Yeon Ah in Soon Shin's place at the sight of the two baahahahahahahahahha And Jun Ho turning down Yeon Ah even AFTER she gives him that ultimatum *applause* And then Jun Ho's face when he whirls around and goes running (presumably to Soon Shin) *cue spazzing*
.......................... okay, imma need some one to peel me off the floor.... Anyone? Please?? Pretty please??

his ways of dealing with Woojoo, a nasty cranky critical little girl, and Yooshin, the all-hear-me-out-girl was just too comical. I look forward to his budding romance with Hyesin & becoming a step dad for Woojoo

and....Junho...aaahhhhh
my sweet guy...*i totally heart him*
i simply can't get enough of him
I hope saturday is coming soon for the sake of my sanity

like others said, IU's acting has improved a lot
i think she earn herself the title of an actress that must be considered as a valuable asset to the movie industry

As you say this drama is predictable in a lot of ways but it's how it's played out that makes it so fun.

Before these two episodes, I found myself realising that I absolutely HATED everyone above the age of 45 in the show. Seriously, the parents-generation in the show absolutely galled me. The only people in that group that didn't gall me as much was Junho's mom, and only because she's just this sweet silly housewife and knows NOTHING about whats going on. Really, at their age, they should know better. I found myself thinking, the only senior I like in the show is Dead Dad, who is unfortunately, very dead.

And then, this week sets some people from the age group on the path to redemption. Mom's less bitter, Chicken Ajumma actually makes sense and ultimately, not malicious, Manager Hwang actually shows that he has sliver of conscience in him.

So, the show blurb has already spoiled it that SoonShin and her two moms will move towards a path of reconciliation. But I don't know how I will EVER like Song MiRyung. Really - the best thing she did was to give her daughter to Dead Dad because SMR's selfishness is like a cancer that eats her humanity up and that of those around her. She's just so COLD and RUTHLESS. I hope she gets cancer.

IU's crying scene after her confrontation with SMR was exquisite. It made me tear up while struggling to read the chinese subtitles (am not really literate in Chinese but I couldn't wait for the English subs). Heartbreaking, really.

Jun ho- such a heodang. I think what I love about him is that, in spite of all his insecurities, when he needs to do the right thing - he does the right thing. At that moment, in the last scene, its like he made a decision: he needs to see SoonShin more than he ever wants to be with Yeong Ah.

I really wish there wasn't a path of reconciliation with Miryung. I think Soon Shin's bio mom has been too cruel with her daughter as well, but they've got 20 years of (happy) history together so reconciliation is understandable even if it will be painful.

But Miryung and Soon Shin? A few weeks of Miryung being kinda, half-fakely nice to her (remember, she was partially using SS to discourage JH's sister from acting), and then turning toxic. This is a person you want out of your life, because you can see in every way that she behaves, from the moment she gave her bio child away to her huge self-portraits in her house (creepy and weird!) to running away from the hit-and-run, she only cares about herself and is super-nasty. She can be nice when she chooses to be (with Yoon-ah right now), but she'll be nice at the cost of others. She's not a good person (compare with the bread man, who is such a good soul) and nothing will ever convince me she can change. Soon Shin should know that Miryung is her bio-mom, but then cut ties with her/keep her distance.

I would go so far to say that she is nice when she sees an advantage to being nice. She needs to have a reason to be nice, therefore she really isn't nice at all!!

I so agree with you. I think that no amount of regret in Mi-ryung can redeem such a selfish and cruel character like her for me.

I think Mom is almost "there" - the place where she can find some peace for herself and be caring to Soon-shin again. It feels extremely satisfied for me to watch Mom yelled at Mi-ryung. Someone please bring some senses into SMR's mind.

It'll be really difficult to persuade me that SMR would even care even if she found out that LSS is her daughter. She never tried finding her bio daughter all this time, had she?

The reason why I think she would care would be some self-serving based reason, like she needs a blood transfusion. After all, this is a woman who is absolutely horrid to the wife and daughter of the man who saved her life two times - from disgrace when she was younger and from an on-coming car at the beginning of the series.

Dead Dad - you should have just let the car run her over and be done with it.

He can mope in private and still take another ~10 episodes to admit to his feelings to Soon Shin, but he needs to be done with Yoon-ah NOW!

It's interesting that they are slapping on all the melodrama and tears right now, when all most of us want to see is the cute parts, the fun comedic scenes. Nothing is more fun than watching Soon Shin mock Jun Ho, like when they are trying to get him to speak at that support group meeting. Mostly, I'm holding out for him to pick up the guitar, sing to her and have her join in with him, and maybe she can become a singer as well as an actress.

I also am enjoying Chan Woo's romance of Yu Shin, and vice versa. I like it because while they are cute together, no one around them (his parents, Ji Yung) are going to be happy when they find out. It's going to be a riot -- especially when Yu Shin decides she does want to marry him, hehe.

Bread guy is a softy. I'm sure his secret past will cause problems, probably granny will go ballistic claiming "you used to be in prison, how could you do this to me?" because you know, it's all about her, when Hye Shin and him get together romantically. And of course Woo Joo will also not be happy at first, but I can see her coming around eventually. Kids are much more flexible than adults when it comes to things like love.

Anyway, sure the story may be predictable, but in this case, with great actors and fun characters, the key is to enjoy the journey. I especially hope that it will be a musical one as well as a romantic one!

I agree. He'll have built up tons of goodwill with all of them, not just being kind but with all his secret keeping!

Plus, seeing how kind he is will make it interesting to find out what he actually was in prison for. It could well have been a wrong conviction, or something where he was taking the blame for someone else to save their face. Or something accidental (e.g. hurting someone in self-defence). He seems to be so good at heart, that it's difficult to imagine he committed a crime – more like it could be he did something that was illegal by the books, but perhaps morally right? You know, like steal food for a hungry family?

hi, alua! i agree with your thoughts on his reasons for being in jail... its so hard to believe that he could do some terrible crime seeing as how he's such a softie and sweetheart to everybody...the best character on the show...on a show with a lot of great characters! he is such a scene-stealer, even without saying a word, he's so expressive. then there's junho who's so adorkable, its a crime! and young-hoon with his interesting observations, kindness and advice, and chan-woo (who at first i thought was just there for eye-candy, but he too is a really nice, level-headed guy who should get the girl for a change!). not forgetting the girls on this show who play their roles very well, too... which just highlights the reason why i love this show, its so good, keeps me eagerly waiting for every new subbed episode!

Everybody should have a Bread Man in their lives. It was so funny yet so heartwarming to watch Bread Man turning Bread Shrink, 'prescribing' bread therapy for Hye Shin. I want to see more of Jin-Wook, of how he'll win over Hye Shin and Woo Joo.

There were several moments that had me bended over backwards with laughter. Jun-Ho's dad had me rolling on the ground with laughter when he said he wouldn't introduce Chan Woo to Yi Jung because she absolutely wouldn't be good enough for him. And that straight face when he said it! Then there's Yoo Shin's colleague who announced Chan Woo's arrival, saying 'here comes your friend who is not your boyfriend'. LOL!

I would've been happier about Mom's reaction to Hye Shin's news... if it hadn't still been all about her. She seemed to give no thought to Hye Shin's pain and wasn't angry about the fact that her daughter had been hurt, was *still* hurting - no, instead she cried because she and her daughter 'shared the same fate'. Uh, lady, ever stop to think that maybe it's not all about you? No? Okay then.

I'm really not sure what Mom can do to make me like her again - at this point, saving the world from the impending zombie apocalypse would not be enough. I am sort of looking forward to the period in the drama where Soon Shin finds out she was adopted and looks back and realises that this was why Mom was so hateful to her... and for Mom, herself, to finally realise just how hurtful and reprehensible her actions were and to try to make up for it (because she's not going to do it before that point, right?).

Still loving the three sisters (and yay for Yoo Shin becoming supportive - I may've cheered a little when she invited her sisters out for a 'bonding' session. *\o/*) and their respective partners and In Sung and Waiter Boy and though parts of the show may frustrate me or make me want to throttle someone, the good largely outweighs the bad (and, y'know, there's always that nifty fast-forward button. ;)).

Thanks for the recap, Javabeans!

I watch all of the Jun Ho scenes and ff through most of the other stuff. He's fantastic. He and IU has a nice chemistry, not burning, but nice.

I bet u it's gonna take MY quite a while to feel apologetic for her actions after finding out SS is her daughter, she's too self centred to regret anything-infact she may never be sorry-the snake!

I was under the impression that Junho and Yeonah weren't officially dating again, and were just meeting to test the waters a bit, and definitely more because she wanted to rather than him. He was definitely guarded on their lunch meeting, and showed more and more disinterest and pretty much wanted her to go away anyway. I was more surprised by his hopeful line to his friend, and think they could have left that out if they weren't going to show him actually hoping a little anywhere else recently.

Yeah, not dating in my book either. I thought it was a lunch meeting, to kinda test the waters, definitely from Yoon-ah's side.

I thought it was weird when she showed up at the end and said "Do I need a reason to see you?", as if they were in a relationship already. Sounded very presumptuous to me, especially since he didn't even look her in the eye during their lunch meeting!

I had the same impression. I never considered them dating. I even thought that Junho was pretty annoyed by the obvious attempts of MR to setup him up with YA... like inviting his family for the dinner...

Nothing was better than the eating scene between JH and SS - what really makes them a good Kdrama couple for me is seeing how comfortable they are with each other. She is always more confident with him, the teasing was cute, and the way he stuffed his face (after eating nothing at Yeon Ah's dinner) was hilarious.

Episode 20 should be called TEASE!!! I can't believe they got Jo Jung-seok to play the guitar and sing "More than Words" ( whihc by the way has to be one of may faaaaaav*gazillion song) , BUT in that high pitched voice.. He as a gorgeous-I will make you myy Slave just by singing voice; but they made his sing it like that...UGHHHH hopefully when he does ( he better) sing later on its gonna be really great...

Hope in the nest episode mom will be more loving towards LSS. Woo-joo really broke my heart in the episode- she does heartbroken so well ( well i also kinda like her bratty coz then we have awesome Bread Man being awesome!!)

i don't know if its just me or not, but I actually like it that he didn't go all out on the song...after all, that was just practice and the point of the scene was him checking if he can still play the guitar after being on hiatus for years. Plus, it will only make the scene where he will be singing to LSS more effective.

Anyway, I really loved the guitar scenes...especially since the entire time I wasn't sure who he was practicing it for (or rather we all knew it was for LSS, but i think that was what the show was aiming for). Both girls asked him to play the guitar for them, and it was only at the end that he revealed that he didn't even think of YA while he was playing the guitar, which to me is very symbolic since JH associates the guitar with YA or with memories with her ( I assumed this since YA was the reason why he quit playing before). So to play again without harbouring thoughts of YA suggest that he has finally moved on from her without even realizing it--and to LSS who is slowly becoming the subject of his obsession---err, i mean, passion! lol

...or maybe Im just overanalyzing this again!LOL :P

I think it was very clear who he was practicing the guitar for - immediately after striking a few chords on a guitar he ha da flashback to when SS asked him to show her his guitar skills

that's why i said we all knew it was for LSS...but the people in the drama didn't...did you notice YH's baffled expression when SJH said he practiced the guitar for LSS and not for YA? I think that was his first time he considered that SJH's interest with LSS goes beyond the premise of his bet with YA.

I particularly liked the way that YA tells JH on their date that she misses being poor together, and then pretty much belies that because the next thing she does is the super fancy dinner party at SMR's house.

And when JH flees that dinner, it's not just to go eat with SS, but to eat with her in a much more humble, down-to-earth style.
