You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 17-18

Lots and lots of cuteness in this pair of episodes. It’s not like there’s a whole lot of new stuff going on, but the drama shifts its balance toward its humorous and couple-centric side, and that makes for a much more enjoyable watch this week. Plus, we kick up a few new conflicts and advance our relationships, taking us a nice step forward.

EPISODES 17-18

Jun-ho swoops in just as Soon-shin is getting the royal brush-off from Mi-ryung, and is so upset on her behalf that he berates her for letting herself be so mistreated. Even now, Soon-shin blames herself—she should have called ahead, she should’ve done better so Mi-ryung wouldn’t have been disappointed in her.

Jun-ho tells her that Mi-ryung is supremely selfish and never meant any of her kindnesses. She can succeed without help from people like Mi-ryung, he tells her—just trust him.

Mi-ryung clocks Jun-ho’s protectiveness and tells Yeon-ah to give up her bet; if she doesn’t admit her real feelings to Jun-ho soon, she could lose him. She warns that Soon-shin is tougher than she looks, and ignoring her could well backfire backfire on Yeon-ah.

As suspected, Manager Hwang is in fact looking for Chicken Ajusshi, whom he calls hyung; they haven’t spoken in years but they’re both from the old neighborhood. He fishes for information casually, but when he asks what happened to Kyung-sook’s baby, Chicken Ajusshi gets nervous and lies that the daughter was taken to an orphanage. Asked the name of the place, Ajusshi supplies a false lead. Manager Hwang gets his investigator on the hunt for all baby girls who were left at orphanages in that area.

Chicken Man takes that information to Mom, assuring her that he threw Manager Hwang off the scent. But Mom snaps that he should’ve just told the truth so Mi-ryung could take Soon-shin for good, because every time she sees Soon-shin’s face she imagines her husband mocking her from the grave. Gah, lady. You give adoptive mothers everywhere a bad name.

At Gabi Entertainment, Jun-ho decides his strategy for launching Soon-shin: a youthful-innocent-mysterious-natural concept. Soon-shin has a little misunderstanding with his “exposure” comment (hence the “Back, back I say!” crossed arms), which he explains in terms of how to present her to the public.

Mom arrives at Gabi, however, to return Soon-shin’s contract signing fee, determined to end this connection once and for all. It’s hard to argue with her reasoning, since she says that he’ll just kick her to the curb like Mi-ryung did. Jun-ho admits being upset with Mi-ryung as well, but pleads for just six months to prove that he can turn Soon-shin into a success, and then cuts that down to one month. Grudgingly, Mom agrees to the one month, warning him that she’ll hold him to his promise to back off at that point.

Jun-ho pulls together a list of potential projects for Soon-shin, giving KBS a brief moment to plug its upcoming drama Shark, as the revenge thriller starring “Kim Nam-il” with a little sister role that Soon-shin might take. But he needs something starting within the month, and nixes that drama.

Yoo-shin is still skittish about keeping her relationship secret, but she’s not above a little jealousy, like when her co-worker asks for an introduction to that cute guy that Yoo-shin calls “just a friend.” Yoo-shin tells her that he’s taken, adding that he has a girlfriend—a really pretty one.

She meets Chan-woo for a date and wins a prize from the cafe, and he sneaks in a kiss for their commemorative photo. Reminding her that it was part of their dating agreement that she stop calling him “hey you,” he prods her to call him Chan-woo-sshi… “Or jagi-ya would be nicer.” Heh.

Chan-woo’s much more relaxed about being seen together while her caution borders on paranoia, although they do both jump apart when Chan-woo’s sister crosses their paths. Thankfully she doesn’t seem too sharp and doesn’t ask about the suspicious behavior.

Soon-shin hears that her mother agreed to let her act and takes that as a positive sign… although when she tries to catch Mom’s attention to thank her, Mom steadfastly ignores her. At the dinner table. Sitting right next to her. Arrrrgh, for a mother who’s not actually supposed to be evil, I sure am hating you a lot. Soon-shin literally calls out to Mom from a foot away, and the whole family points out that Soon-shin is trying to talk to her, and Mom just barrels on talking about the goddamned groceries.

Yeon-ah takes Mi-ryung’s warning to heart and decides to do something about her relationship with Jun-ho by visiting his father. She gives Dr. Shin a gift and offers him compliments, only to find herself stalemated when Dr. Shin firmly refuses. He’s polite but resolute, citing office rules, though we see that he entertains suspicions about Yeon-ah’s relationship to Jun-ho.

Yi-jung drops by the clinic for some more Chan-woo stalking, and when Yeon-ah recognizes her as Jun-ho’s sister, she invites her out to coffee. She’s super-friendly, happy to ingratiate herself to ONE Shin, at least. Yeon-ah even hands over her designer scarf when Yi-jung ogles it, and asks for her phone number so they can hang out.

Yi-jung is thrilled, though she isn’t so dense that she doesn’t pick up on hints of some kind of relationship between Yeon-ah and her brother.

Jun-ho brings his beauty team to the restaurant and subjects Soon-shin to another makeover right then and there. Yes, it’s a bit ridiculous that they’re doing this in the restaurant, but hey, if this is what it takes to get Young-hoon and Jun-ho together in scenes, I won’t complain.

Soon-shin is beautified and gussied up, and we get our slo-mo reaction shot from the boys: Jun-ho, Young-hoon, and even Jae-bum, who all stare slack-jawed. Granted, Soon-shin already had her Cinderella moment at the VIP screening with the purple dress, and then again at her audition, so this is a repetitive beat. That, and Jun-ho’s a little slow on the uptake to only now go glazed-eyed at her appeal. But you know, I love it anyway.

Jun-ho covers up with his usual gruffness, nitpicking Soon-shin’s posture and speech: The public wants a fantasy, not the truth.

Jun-ho instructs her to work on her mannerisms and deportment to become a woman who’d make his heart skip a beat, ’cause if she can do that, she can win over the public. Oh, I think we’re going to be fine on that front.

Young-hoon, the sweetie, cheers her on by telling her that her charm is her easygoing, natural personality and that she ought not forget her real self.

Mom pesters Hye-shin again for her husband’s cell number, determined to give him a good scolding for ignoring his family. Sigh, if you only knew. Hye-shin has bigger complications, though, when her ex-mother-in-law calls her out to basically rake her over the coals for being such a horrible wife as to demand fidelity from her husband, and then to leave him instead of just sucking it up forever.

Furthermore, Mom-in-Law declares her intent to take over paying for Woo-joo’s child care, because she can’t stand to see her son spending his hard-earned money on child support. Well, I guess we know where he got his parenting skills. Mom-in-Law orders Hye-shin to invoice her every month, and snipes that if Hye-shin is so offended about it she should’ve just stayed married. Oh, so she could get the abuse from Mother-in-Law and Hubby? I think she made the better choice, dragon lady.

Bread Man Jin-wook overhears much of this conversation since, naturally, it takes place in his bakery. He hangs back out of consideration, but when Dragon Mom snaps that “it’s no wonder your husband looked elsewhere” for comfort, he snaps. Yay! He interrupts the conversation, and then because he doesn’t want to put Hye-shin on the spot, he just tells Dragon Mom that they’re closed. She has to leave. NOW.

Jin-wook all but shoves her outside, and then adorably offers Hye-shin a glass of milk. She’s embarrassed and grateful, and asks him to keep this a secret from her family. Jin-wook plays dumb and tells her that he honestly didn’t hear anything, so he doesn’t know what she means.

With the one-month deadline, Jun-ho’s options for launching Soon-shin are slim, and he decides to go with a music video. It’s already been cast with a hot young actress, Shin Ji-ah, and her agency CEO is a bulldog, but Jun-ho’s willing to risk it and swings into action.

It sends the already frustrated office of Gabi into more stress, and Mi-ryung hears about Shin Ji-ah being dropped to make room for Soon-shin. Uh-oh…

Soon-shin hears about Mi-ryung’s visit to the office and darts out in time to see her leaving the building. Chasing after her on the street, Soon-shin apologizes again for disappointing her, keeping upbeat as she promises to prove herself. Mi-ryung just tells her to go ahead and do just that… and then takes a meeting with Shin Ji-ah’s manager.

As a result, Gabi is soon slapped with notice of a lawsuit, with Shin Ji-ah demanding damages for losing out on her MV gig. Jun-ho finds this suspicious, because while he can see cause for ruffled tempers, blowing this up into a legal battle is bad for both agencies.

Thus when Yeon-ah calls him for a meeting, he’s curt—and suspicious. Did she manipulate President Han into the lawsuit?

Yeon-ah’s reason for calling him out is to suggest they drop the bet, even agreeing to sign with his company after all. But she bristles at his accusation, as though she wouldn’t go through such lengths to foil Soon-shin, a mere nothing. Jun-ho reminds her that this isn’t unlike her: “You always did whatever it took to get what you wanted. Not caring about hurting other people.” He leaves her with the warning not to mess with Soon-shin, or else.

Since this conversation takes place at the only restaurant in Seoul, Soon-shin sees them talking from a distance and asks Young-hoon about their relationship. Young-hoon doesn’t give anything away, but Soon-shin puts two and two together, figuring that Yeon-ah must be the ex who broke his heart.

Soon-shin dutifully follows Jun-ho’s instructions and practices her demure persona, which hilariously creeps everyone out. Her unnis give her the ole side-eye and Grandma wonders if she’s ill, but they are at least happily supportive to hear that she got a role in a music video.

They urge her to show them a taste of what she’s been learning, so Soon-shin complies with a heartfelt monologue. She delivers it well and with the appropriate tears and emotion, awing both sisters and even Grandma, who grudgingly says that she hasn’t been wasting her time. (Coming from her, that’s a compliment.)

Mom, of course, kills the whole mood by sniffing that there are tons of people out there who are better than Soon-shin (really, Mom? Really?), adding derisively, “If she’d done a good job, would Song Mi-ryung have quit?” Gah. That’s so emotionally manipulative.

Mom’s display of negativity is so extreme that the sisters all wonder what’s going on. Yoo-shin warns Hye-shin that Mom seems to be on to her situation (re: the divorce) and urges her to out with the truth already (seriously), but Hye-shin isn’t ready to tell.

When Woo-joo drops by the bakery to buy Grandma’s favorite sweet buns, Bread Man asks if she wants anything for Children’s Day. She turns him down flat, then brags that her father is going to send her a huuuuuge present and that she’s only living here until Dad comes back. Aw, Bread Man is left wondering if she is in the dark about her parents’ divorce.

Jun-ho finds that the rival manager, President Han, is not at all willing to compromise. He’s offended to have his star pushed aside for some lame newbie, and threatens to continue with the legal suit if Jun-ho keeps pushing Soon-shin.

The thing is, President Han is perfectly justified in feeling miffed, and Jun-ho is aware of that—but even so, he points out that his hard stance on this is quite unlike him. (Read: There’s another reason pushing him to stonewall Jun-ho.)

Jun-ho isn’t willing to back down, but he isn’t blind to the risks he’s taking. Hence his glum mood when he checks in on Soon-shin’s lessons and takes her for a walk. She picks up on his mood and guesses at the reason, half-teasing that it’s from being lovelorn over Yeon-ah.

Jun-ho totally denies it, but not convincingly and Soon-shin continues to poke good-natured fun. She reminds him of his own words to her: that you can’t change people’s minds, only your own, and thus you’re better off changing how you feel. Heh, now the student teaches the master.

Soon-shin surprises Jun-ho by thanking him quite sincerely, saying that she’s really enjoying herself and finding that acting is thrilling. It’s the first time in her life she’s enjoyed herself this much and she’s grateful that he gave her the chance. With that, she offers him the flower she’s been toying with, puts on her demure actress voice and thanks him as though in an award speech. He totally loves the attention, the dork.

Adding icing to the cake of the moment, a bike messenger plays Cupid by whizzing by, making Jun-ho grab her out of harm’s way and leading to some pounding hearts all around. Aw, I like that they’re both developing feelings at the same speed. To make it even cuter, Jun-ho paces back and forth for a moment in agitation, but makes sure to retrieve the flower he’d dropped. Then he goes home smiling like a doofus.

Yeon-ah goes to Mi-ryung for a consolation drink and wonders what’s gotten into Jun-ho, accusing her manipulating the music video situation. Mi-ryung stiffens, but she’s an old pro at this whole deceit game and fans the flames, telling Yeon-ah that it’s because everyone’s gossiping that Jun-ho’s got a romance cooking with the rookie. She offers to help Yeon-ah, which cannot be a good thing.

Chan-woo buys himself a new car and calls Yoo-shin to confirm their date. Who should spy him in the clinic’s parking garage but Yi-jung, who is so brassy as to help herself to a seat and pester him for a date. She’s harmless enough and therefore not worth getting upset about, but man is she a brat.

Chan-woo gets pretty annoyed and pulls her out of the car, and she leaves with her head hanging. Still, she consoles herself with the thought (delusion) that they’re fated to be.

Yoo-shin has a rough day at work, getting chewed out by her boss for a mistake that wasn’t her fault, and gets surprised by Chan-woo in his new car. The drive cheers her spirits and she buys him his first car accessory, thanking him for cheering her up. The way he lights up at that is just adorable.

A phone starts ringing, and comes from a phone neither of them recognizes. Yoo-shin picks up, and a hilariously catty conversation ensues as Yi-jung and Yoo-shin suspiciously question each other, wondering how they’re involved with Chan-woo (who’s just sitting there in quiet confusion).

Yoo-shin announces herself as the girlfriend, and Yi-jung totally plays the situation to piss her off, and they both fume until Yoo-shin snaps and hangs up. It’s really cute.

Chan-woo laughs, saying that she’s even prettier when she’s jealous—for once it feels like she actually likes him. He points out that she’s never actually said the words, and she says she will… if he stops being so indiscriminately nice to other girls. Ha.

Mom has been increasingly suspicious of Hye-shin and her husband, who is resolutely out of touch. Mom asks Woo-joo about it, who dutifully lies to cover Mom’s ass but who then stomps off feeling extra-sensitive. So when she calls her father and he fails to pick up yet again, she starts crying halfway into the message as she asks why he doesn’t call anymore.

Bread Man sees her crying on the stoop by herself, and offers her a huge teddy bear. Aw, it’s a toy from the bakery that he’d seen a young girl asking her daddy to buy her earlier today, and it’s extra-sweet that he doesn’t make a big show of it, knowing Woo-joo’s not likely to take it well. So he says that he knows her father’s gift will be better, but she should accept this one too.

Woo-joo says, annoyed, “Am I a child?” Ha, Bread Man just blinks: “You are a child.” Hee. He tells her to keep the teddy bear, adding that she can throw it away if she wants.

She doesn’t throw it away, but she does stomp into the bedroom crying, and begs her mother to make up with Dad and live with him again. It’s not quite fair for everyone to act like Hye-shin’s betrayal is nothing, but it is sad to hear Woo-joo’s own suffering as she cries, “How can Dad do this to me?” But it’s easier to blame the one who’s in front of you than the one who refuses to be, so she yells at Hye-shin, “This is all your fault, Mom!”

Mom again presses Hye-shin for the truth, asking if they’re having money troubles. Hye-shin manages to fob Mom off with more excuses, but I’m pretty sure she’s just about out of them.

Soon-shin keeps up her demure facade at work, and it has Jae-bum thoroughly creeped out… at himself: “She keeps looking pretty to me.” Pwahaha. Young-hoon compliments Soon-shin on her improvement, which makes her squeal in her normal voice, “Really?!” before she kicks herself for dropping out of character. It’s tough, acting so sweet and poised all the time.

Unfortunately, the gossip about Jun-ho’s fixation with his rookie gains traction, not just within Gabi’s offices but through the industry at large. Soon-shin first encounters it when she’s the target of bitchy trainee girl gossip, who sniff down their noses at her for wagging her tail at the CEO.

Best friend Chan-mi comes back into relevance when she hears that rumor from her stylist friend, who tells her all about that gold-digging rookie who stole the music video from Shin Ji-ah. At least Chan-mi defends Soon-shin—she hasn’t proven herself to be much of a friend so I had my doubts—and runs to warn Soon-shin about the rumors.

Well, first she has to confirm them: Is she the CEO’s new girlfriend? Soon-shin is, to put it lightly, gobsmacked.

On the upside for Jun-ho, he hears that Shin Ji-ah scored a new movie, so they can spin some of the stories into a more benign version. But a puzzle piece drops into place to hear that she got the movie through a recommendation—from Mi-ryung herself. Aha! He realizes, “It wasn’t Yeon-ah?”

He heads straight to Mi-ryung’s house to confront her, asking why she’d do this to Soon-shin. Mi-ryung doesn’t bother to deny her involvement, and in fact readily admits that she did it because she didn’t like seeing “my Yeon-ah” hurt because of Jun-ho.

She has to connect the dots for him, saying that Yeon-ah asked him to drop the bet because she wants to get back together. How can he be so blind to a woman’s heart? Figuring that Jun-ho still has feelings for Yeon-ah, she tells him to stop wasting his time with Soon-shin.

COMMENTS

Well, thank goodness for Mom’s agreement—she’s still a pill, but at least this shakes up the story in speeding up the ticking clock and removing (somewhat) her opposition. ‘Cause let’s face it, her stubborn refusal to let Soon-shin act wasn’t only tiresome to watch, but also losing ground on the whole logic front. We know she’s motivated by other factors, but nobody in this show does and so the longer she held out, the more confused everyone else got.

It’s what makes her continued silence so frustrating. Yes, you have a right to feel betrayed, and yes, I’ll even cut you some slack for lashing out at the wrong person because of all the grief and hurt. But there’s a limit to how much you can emotionally dump on the wrong person before you stop being the martyr and start being the bad guy here. Let’s assume she’s right about all the horrible things she believes, and that Dad dumped a child on her with nooooo regard for her feelings whatsoever, and that she sacrificed endlessly and thanklessly, and good god nobody was every more misused by the world than she was. Let’s assume all that’s true. That still doesn’t excuse her behavior toward Soon-shin, which I thought finally crossed a line in this pair of episodes from lashing out misguidedly to willfully hurtful. And that’s something I don’t excuse, no matter how much of a victim you think you are.

What makes Mom so problematic (and I feel like I’m repeating this point ad nauseam—but it’s relevant, week after week) is that the question really should be about blood not equaling motherhood, and yet Mom’s reaction is all about that biological bond. I get that it’s her great fear, and that perhaps even a big part of her standoffish reaction is driven by self-hatred… but self-hatred that manifests as hatred isn’t really that much more excusable, is it?

On to happier topics: I love Bread Man Jin-wook. He is such a great, endearing character, and I love the well-roundedness of Jung-woo’s portrayal. Despite being armed with a lot of information (and for once, that info is correct, ha), he’s being very circumspect about using it. His interactions with both Hye-shin and Woo-joo are always driven by their needs, and that makes him a stand-up guy who doesn’t get a lot of credit (in the world of the drama, that is) but continues to be a stand-up guy anyway. Because that’s just the way he lives his life.

That also provides a significant contrast to the selfishness of Hye-shin’s husband, who is his complete opposite and brings his family nothing but misery. Though it may take a while for this loveline to heat up, I’m content with the way Hye-shin notices and appreciates him, even if neither of them seems aware of it yet. But Woo-joo knows, and Woo-joo just may be the link (despite wanting very much to be the dividing force at this point).

I’m nervous about how this whole casting couch rumor is going to play out, mostly because it seems one step away from being twisted into reality. There was humor into having the CEO flustered and challenged by the indifferent rookie, but now that they’re actually starting to show interest, I fear for the ugliness in store. Not to mention that only badness can come from a Mi-ryung/Yeon-ah alliance. I just have to hope that this show is too much of a lightweight to take that too far, bringing us back in no time to bantering, flirting, and accidental clinches. Or, you know, nonaccidental ones. I’m not picky.

I hope you were able to watch this week's episodes already. I actually watched them on time this week! Go figure.

I love the shift this week towards the romance and less of the birth secret stuff. Mom is just the most infuriating character I've seen in awhile. It's gotten so bad I don't even mind watching the villains at work! Or even Yi-jung and that's saying a lot for me. That girl is a straight up Bratty McBrat Brat. Seriously, stay away from my beloved Chan-woo and Yoo-shin!

Honestly, nearly all of the older women on this show drive me insane with their pettiness and self-centeredness. Soon-shin's mom, granny, chicken ahjumma, Mi-ryung, and now even Hye-shin's mother-in-law...

Writers, can we have at least one positive female role model? Please?

YES, YES, AND YES!

So tired of all the cattiness and hurtful comments, especially coming from Soon-shin's mom. It's kind of dragging the plot. I know that she is depressed and felt betrayed by Dad, but is it Soon-shin's fault? The way Mom treat Soon-Shin that she has raised and loved is really unfair and doesn't quite make sense to me. After all, Soon-Shin doesn't even have a clue about her birth secret.

I don't get the mom, at all. If this reveal had happened when Soon-Shin was a baby, then I could maybe see the mom turning against her, but this is years later, years in which mom and daughter have grown together, created memories, and Soon-Shin has ceased to be just an extension of her parents but more a person in her own right.
Mom was generous enough to take in an loved an innocent child from some unfortunate circumstance, and never held it against Soon-shin that she wasn't her own or might have a "shady" past. She is not even absolutely sure that Soon-Shin is her husband's illegitimate offspring, yet she has done a 180 turn in her philosophy.
The only way I can explain it is to believe she is having some sort of mental breakdown caused by her husband's death, and that she is transferring all of her anger at her husband leaving her onto Soon-shin.

I almost start to wonder if the writer has some issues with his own mother to write all the moms so horribly... except Hye-shin, I suppose.

The thing about Mom that really aggravates me is that her anger isn't even needed to generate more plot. She could have been suspicious of Miryung and against LSS's acting without taking out her anger on SooShin, which makes her continued nasty behavior all the more puzzling (that is, confusing as to why the writer is keeping it up). At least this drama has good sister relationships.

Chicken ajumma putting on lipstick waiting for her son to take her for a ride in his new car is so funny. Talk abt a one sided love! I got a good laugh out of it.
I don't have a problem w LSS's mom, cos the min her face or even her back appears, I just FF! No problem at all. ;)
Hye-shin's MIL is a char that we've seen a million times in KD, a cardboard cutout of a well off woman looking down on her DIL n the world.
Of the 4, Mi Ryung is the one who bugs me the most. She has all this fancy make-up, expensive clothing, red wine drinking in that upscale house, but is such an thoroughly unpleasant soul underneath! Boo.

For some reason I found that scene very disturbing -- I think not so much her relationship with her son, but just based on her personality.

I think Jun-Ho's mum is kinda cute, although she really shouldn't spoil her daughter so much. But at least she's not so terribly self-centered.

Well, while not totally positive, Soon Shin's future Mother-in-Law isn't totally self-centered. She likes to cook and tries to protect her self-centered comedic relief daughter. I can imagine she'll finally get to agree with her husband for once when Jun Ho brings home his new squeeze sometime in the future. I'm sure it will be funny and entertaining -- gotta have Yi-jung there as well to add to the future chaos and double-takes, hehe.

I cannot see any real mom acting that way unless she is truly a bit nuts. It is getting old, and I am tired of her issues and her taking out it out on everyone else, yet refusing to tell anyone what her issues are. As said above, I think the writers really had it in for older women, not a single one so far that I can empathize with.

Thanks for the recap(s).
I really want this show to have MORE lighthearted moments -- because currently most of the characters are behaving like *the last person you would want to have in your real life*.

Seriously UGLY behavior -- hurtful words & manipulation just because they can. I won't continue to watch a show where I simply "don't like" the characters...at all.
(misplaced-anger-Mom, I'm looking at YOU ಠ_ಠ )

Hoping the next few episodes begin to show some character arcs... it's feeling a bit stagnant at the moment.
2 cents. :)

Happy that there's less of Mom in these episodes but she's more mean in her few scenes. Gah.

I got how Mi-ryung could have done what she did to Soon-shin the first time, but actively sabotaging Soon-shin??? Isn't she also part of gabi and even if she does not actively support the newbie, then she should just be indifferent to it all. I don't like her level of meanness and her lack of conscience. Hope Jun-ho lets her go from his company. And please don't fall for that "Yeon-ha wants to get back together" line. Please.

Yooshin is just the perfect person to take down Yijung.

By the life of me, I don't understand how Yijung thinks that the way she behaves could make her attractive to anyone. She's like a 5-year old, spoilt rotten and continually throwing temper tantrums. Who'd want a girlfriend like that? Or even a friend like that?

Thanks for the lovely recaps, Javabeans! I totally agree with you word for word in your comments section. Mom is seriously too annoying; Bread Man is super endearing; and Soon Shin-Jun Ho couple is very cute. I'm also a bit wary of the Yeon Ah-Mi Ryung alliance but hey, at least it brings more conflict than just the mom's woe-is-me conflict.

I particularly enjoyed episode 18. Love was the flavor of the day with further character development of our supporting cast providing the icing on the cake. The quintessential contrast among the sisters’ blossoming relationships with their leading men was light-hearted, subtle and tastefully done. The protracted 50-episodes felt justified, leaving ample space and time for fostering a romantic mood throughout, for drawing out the intricacies of the characters’ relationships and allowing the audience to immerse ourselves in the romantic ventures of our leading actors and actresses.

Our three sisters are in obviously divergent phases in their romance. First, there’s clueless Hye Shin who is oblivious to Bread Man’s obvious crush on her, blinded by her need to put up appearances but unknowingly causing spill-over effects on little Woo Joo who’s also learnt to put up a defensive front in front of others. Bread Man’s gruff but soft heartedness is rejected by little Woo Joo yet again when she chose to mistreat both him and the teddy bear, so much so that I really felt sorry for him. But it was Hye Shin’s continued charade in front of her mom that makes me want to scream in frustration (re the scene where HS’s mom came into her room after hearing HS and WJ quarrelling). Hye Shin is obviously a capable woman from the manner she could quickly pick up the loopholes in Soon Shin’s legal contract. I really want to see her come out from her self-encased cocoon and put a firm foot on what she feels is right to do and for her to see that she can make it on her own, not to mention that she realizes soon there’s The Right One waiting patiently for her just at her side.

Then there’s Yoo Shin. Amongst the three sisters I thought she’s the luckiest in love. Yoo Shin is probably the most practical person in the family but it also makes her somewhat overly serious. True, her imagined problem of being singled out at work for being overly engrossed in romance was unfortunately quite real, with a superior out to get her whenever he can and gossipy colleagues notwithstanding. But I thought she should seize the day and indulge in the moment while she can, given the suggested upcoming domestic battle between Yoo Shin and Chan Woo’s mom (re the faux reason for the purchase of the car and CW’s mom’s all-out readiness to choose a daughter-in-law for him), and Yi Jung’s involvement as the potential third party will simply add more fun to the party. There is no doubt we will see much needed humour and fun in Yoo Shin’s self-created mess of her own romance. Chan Woo’s patience and sweet-natured self makes me swoon – buying a car for a girl friend’s aching feet; what else can the guy not do? I really love the cute scene between this couple when Yoo Shin found Yi Jung’s mobile in the car.

Finally Soon Shin. It is great for the PD not to have Jun Ho and her falling too quickly in love or portraying their relationship too quickly as a one-sided affair. It was great to see the two young persons developing rapport and friendship and neither one immediately having romantic notions towards each other. Here, little (or maybe, big in monetary terms) gestures mean so much. Shielding Soon Shin from the callousness of Song Mi Ryung, and then the cyclist (what a coincidence! But for that sweet moment, let’s have more of the cyclist-type scenes lol), throwing away loads of money to make Soon Shin the lead in the MV. I’m looking out to see when’s the tilting point when either one finally realizes the romantic feelings he’s harbouring for the other (ok, so my buck’s on Jun Ho). What makes the romance between Soon Shin and Jun Ho a little tiring to watch is the unfortunate birth secret that’s still waiting to unravel in a big way. I’m not too surprised that Song Mi Ryung has become the big bad in their relationship and the major obstacle to Soon Shin’s budding career. Things are heating up in a major way (malicious rumours in the entertainment circle is something to behold). On the other hand I actually feel sorry for Choi Yun Ah who keeps having to take the brunt of Jun Ho’s scoldings and being used by Song Mi Ryung selfishly.

Totally looking forward to the next episodes. Even SS’s mom’s wrath and mopiness cannot tear my eyes off the screen.

Yeah, I would've thought Yeon Ah to be the typical second lead foil, but compared to the bitter old ladies on the show she's actually pretty reasonable, if a bit glossy. Certainly from her perspective you can sorta understand why she's like, what the hell's going on here? My ex snipes at me all the time while wanting me for his company and is infatuated with a random little girl off the street, my mentor runs warm and ice cold, and did her manager just push that girl onto the street and did my ex just run away with her?

I find Yeon-ah quite boring. I can't stand exes that think they have a right to get their former partner back after they have treated him like shit. Even if at the moment she isn't the one actively manipulating things (except for starting the bet to play and gamble with Joon-ho's feelings yet again).

I don't feel sorry for her being wrongly accused either – Joon-ho is of course wrong to accuse her, but what's really interesting is that although the specific instances he thinks she has orchestrated are not her fault, the fact that he thinks she's capable to doing such things says a lot about her character. If she honestly stops to think for a moment "Why is it that he thinks I'm capable of doing such things," she's going to encounter some really ugly truths about herself. Which of course would be very painful realisations for a person to have. I still don't feel sorry for her, and I hope that Joon-ho doesn't get back together with her for even one second.

Not sure she does/dosn't deserve some delayed backlash. But I'm loving how she was trying to cultivate Mi-rung and now Mi-rung is totally using her. I still can't tell what her real feelings are. But I laugh every time she shows up as this villain in a story she barely knows exists. (it's a parady reversal of the 2nd girl actually being the villain but no one suspecting)

That family is a regular House of Secrets, no? Practically everyone's got one, and you can tell Soon Shin's adopted cuz she's the one who's terrible at keeping secrets. Big unni, interestingly enough, is easily the smoothest when it comes to fibbing.

Also, Soon Shin's fake awards speech, complete with Happy Spin? So adorable.

Cameo: apparently the bitchy trainees are from the girl group who sings the show's theme song. TAHITI, I believe.

- I DIED (in the good way) watching then reading the recap for the restaurant makeover scene.....redundant in plot progress, but yea, I agree with Javabeans on this on: any reason to get Young Hoon on screen (and with Jun Ho together) is good... I will take it ANY. DAY heeeeeeeeee!!!!!!
- the scene with Jun Ho and Soon Shin at the park, just all around cuteness GAAAAHHHHHH and awwww feels developing and realizations kicking in FTW
- "She keeps looking pretty to me" bahahahhahahahahaha
- last, but not least.... Frigging FINALLY Jun Ho is pushed and is face-to-face head-on with the questions about his relationship and feels for Yeon Ah and his REAL motives towards Soon-Shin *sigh of relief*

While that may be true she's taking her anger and betrayal out on the wrong person and someone who is totally innocent and unaware of why her loving mother is suddenly treating her like dirt.

As a mother myself, I can't fathom doing something to deliberately hurt my child or to make them doubt their talent and worth. I could care less that they aren't blood related, not withstanding that mom's known that Soon Shin wasn't biologically hers from the beginning, if you love and raise a child to adulthood as the mother...then you ARE the mother. What this show is saying so far about adoptive parents is just so wrong.

Any sympathy I once felt for "mom" has completely dried up. She's pretty much turned the corner into hateful territory for me.

I don't know: moms are human too, right? And she thinks soon shin is her husbands illegitimate child with another woman and she hasn't got that husband here in front of her to clear things up with. So she's taking it out in soonshin, who lets face, is a bit a catalyst for trouble.

I'm not sayin mom is right, just that her breakdown is entitled to patience.

This dramas lost me, tho. I don't feel like watching it anymore. It feels draggy.

And I'm tired of women depicted as either spineless or evil. Okay, middle sis and granny aren't like that, but everyone else? And since when is it okay to laugh at women falling and getting injured because they've been set up as spoilt brats (thinking of cake slip last review)? Or anyone? That sort of thing is dangerous and it's not for laughing at.

Mom needs to stop being mean to Soon Shin. I get she's upset, but now she's just being purposefully evil. I'm ready for her to fall back already.

Love Breadman! Love that he stood up to evil Mother in Law. The nerve of her to blame the daughter for her son's wandering d**K. (This is one part I have about kdramas - the evil MIL).

But seriously, how much more can Chan Woo's mom yell. Every time she's on the screen, she is a screeching harpy. How is she NOT hoarse already.

I thought that mother-in-law putdown was an interesting parallel to Soon Shin's situation. Everything that is attributed to Soon Shin -- that she's a nobody, plain, and a loser -- byatch-in-law sees in Hye Shin. Clearly she needs to get her eyes checked, of course, but there's always a mother ready to knock you down in this world, it seems. Maybe Hye shin is just much better at hiding her insecurities than Soon Shin is.

That said, I like how physically comfortable Jun-ho is with LSS, people have been calling it skinship but I prefer to say camaraderie.Even when he pulled her in to protect her, he projected his emotions really well.Dorky namja is flawless in my eyes.

I absolutely agree with TS regarding mum's behaviour: Her daughters are polite but condescending.LSS is completely oblivious to the fact that mum goes ballistic whenever she mentions Mi-Ryung, but she keeps acting like a lost puppy.I'm not downplaying the boost MR's praises(faux, albeit) gave to her confidence.Oldest unni is anything but honest, and Yoo-Shin is in her own little world.Add the snarky, emotionally blackmailing tone that grandmother uses, and her friend's passive-aggressive stance towards family secrets, it's no wonder Mum acts like a pill.

On a side note, did anyone notice the smirk Mi-Ryung threw at Jun-Ho in the last set of episode like she was on to his inner feelings.I think it was captured in the recaps.http://i.imgur.com/picpUnl.jpg

I still have no love for Soon-shin's mom. The show better make her redemption exponentially awesome in order for it to be even the slightest bit believable.

The Mi-ryung/Yeon-ah alliance is an interesting plotline, and gives us worthy villains. I actually fear the possible terror those two can come up with.

But the three sisters' lovelines are what's keeping me glued to my computer screen every week.

Somebody please tell me I was not the only one who replayed that Jun-ho/Soon-shin cuteness over 10 times. Down to Jun-ho's adorable reaction in his room post fluster... SO CUTE!

Uhm, even though I think I can understand mom's temper tantrums, I think she really ought to see a psychologist. Like, right now.

She's just like this massive, flaming ball of hurt, anger and confusion that seeing HER makes me hurt inside. And seeing her mistreat SoonShin... wow, somebody just stab me already.

I don't know if the actress interpreted her character wrongly, but I thought that I would see hurt and anger (at herself, not just at SoonShin) in mom's eyes during those scenes when she brushes her youngest daughter off. I think I would accept (I don't mean that I would condone it, just that I would accept it as what real people may do) just her actions much better if it at least seemed that mom was becoming a monster not of her own will but because of her massive insecurities.

Right now, I'm not seeing that and I'm just defending mom by myself, telling myself that she's like that just because she's terribly hurt and feeling betrayed, because I don't want to hate her because I don't think she deserves to be hated.

And as much as HyeShin thinks it's better for WooJoo not to know the truth, I think WooJoo has a right to know what a scumbag her father is. Otherwise she might spend days/months/years at length maligning her mom, time which she would probably regret when she finds out the truth.

I think Woo Joo knows the truth, but is in her childlike denial about it. Lots of young kids of divorced couples act like that. My uncle sure did when his parents divorced. He was absolutely devastated when abusive (to all the women in the house at least) Grandpa left, and cried after him and for his attention so many times, only to pretty much be ignored like Woo Joo. My uncle was the baby of the family, and was about 6 I think when it happened. I was 3 so I don't remember the divorce itself much, but I do remember the years of fallout it had.

Thank you sooo much for keeping the recaps coming dear javabeans and girlfriday! ♥♥♥ You gals have so many plates in the air, I am so grateful, and gleeful hahahah to have all these wonderful recaps to read through...

Whats keeping me still watching is the cute little developments between Junho and Soon Shin, Bread man and Hye Shin... Chan woo and Yoo shin's little under the radar romance feels very realistic and slow... but after seeing the explosive chemistry in Queen in Hyun's man... this whole slow-burn romance is a little strange to me... but also I wouldn't want to see too much fire during the kisses because part of my brain will go : NOOOOO.... think of poor Ji Hyun woo in the army ( its unfair, but I cant control my thoughts...hahahaha)

What I really can't stand is - Mum. Whats up with her... you shouldn't turn 20+ years of whole hearted love for a daughter , AND a doting husband, and just flip it around to hate... Did she know nothing of her own husband's character? To not stand by him, now that he is dead, and no longer able to stand up for himself, and just fume inwardly, uselessly... is just... too off putting for words...

I am enjoying Mi Ryung's true colors, now that she is being so mean to Soon Shin, for the sake of her fake daughter Yeon Ah, the things she going to throw in her real daughter's path... The delicious irony to punish that wicked woman later on, for her to squirm in anguish... yeah I can't wait for that... The woman who turned her back on everything, everyone to succeed... will she be able to repent to become a better person.... ( its a weekend makjang, so of course she will i suppose..haha)

I am glad the show is doing well, rating in the 1st or 2nd place so far, but I think it could be much better... ... less sour and more sweet please!

With regard to Chan woo and Yoo shin, such a cute couple, but I, also, have Yoo In-na’s real life relationship in the back of my mind. I am ridiculously grateful that this on-screen romance is tepid in comparison to the romance in Queen In-hyuns Man. This young lady’s relationship is none of my business but I cannot seem to keep myself from hoping for the best for these two adorable actors. (Yoo In-na and Ji Hyun-woo)

Thank you for so clearly articulating something that I also feel!!!

Gee wiz these women are vile, Mom-seriously?, Chicken Mom- I find repulsive (good acting?) Mi Ryung-Super cold. Actually Jun Ho’s mom seems pretty sweet, a bit of a social climber but a gentle woman who married an ass.

And Jun Ho’s sister-who did that to her hair and can she sue them? She is hard to look at because of her carrot orange, over-processed hair.

mom's character has been way too one dimensional these past few episodes. it's the writing. she keeps fuming over the same thing every week, and while that's fine in real life, in a drama we need some progress. i'm glad i'm not the only one getting fed up wither. although for me, it does have a little bit to do with the actress as well. i've loved her in plenty of old school dramas (men of the bathhouse being one), but in recent years she's been getting on my nerves. it might her voice (as she ages, it gets more and more growly) or her characters. probably a mixture of both.

and i think we're far enough into the show that i can safely decisively say that i'm not impressed by jo jung-seok. i don't like his acting. that "natural" style that worked so well for him in what's up and intro to architecture, simply isn't cutting it for him here. it just feels too measured, too thought out, or something. he just bores me here. and somehow the entire show has a slightly laggy feel, in lots of ways. it needs more pep...

i am pretty invested in the sisters' stories. and there are enough cute elements in the show to keep me tuning in each week, but still, wishing for even better!

After 18 episodes, i'm so happy that I still love Soon-shin. I say this because usually in the dramas I watch, I dont know if its intentionally or not, the male protagonist shines more by the middle of the drama. I also love Jun-ho, but now I like them equally. Im rooting for Soon-shin, I like to see her progress, she makes me laugh and I love the way she teases Jun-ho.
IU is very pretty, but the whole transformation was just a change of clothes for me (well, she needed that, so.) Ok, maybe they could do something more with the hair, but her face looks the same (it looks good). Maybe a little more make up. But yeah, those astonished men are good.

Bread man: I love you.

Thank you for the recap!

For me, the thing about casting someone with such little acting experience as IU for Soon Shin, is that as a viewer I was questioning IU's ability as much as the people in the story questions Soon Shin's ability to act. So far the role hasn't been too demanding yet and IU's not bad at all. But when they cast an idol as a girl who dives into an acting career, I can relate to the characters of the story and watch her grow as an actress, as her character's blossoming onscreen.

Well, the less of the birth secret, the better.
And the less of Yijung, the better. I'm sorry, I just can't stand her, character-wise and acting-wise as well.

And I have no understanding for Miryung. So she is doing all this evil plotting to a daughter of the man who saved her life and died on her behalf??? Really?? I'm officially hating her...
It seems that the fight of the mothers will be of a different kind than I had originally thought. They will fight for the position of the most horrible mother... Right now, Miryung is winning.

But those things aside, I still love watching the 3 sisters and their love-lines and I had a big laugh couple of times. Especially all times when Sunshin was training for her innocent and pure image.
And bread-ahjussi is soooo sweet!!!

Somehow these two episodes seem a bit dull compared to the previous ones (perhaps it is the Recap) I haven't watched this one as we still haven't reached it over here yet. Though there certainly seem to be some nice and tender moments that I look forward to.

Please note I mean no disrespect to anyone over here I certainly love reading these recaps if anyone may have actually noticed my comments but this feels a bit down (nothing to do with the recapper the episode must be that down for me. Remember everyone has their own perspective and I may actually enjoy it more when I watch it.) For instance when I was a kid I loved reading books (still do when I get the time) So I went and borrowed some from my neighbor and he recommended the following book for me Goodbye Mr. Chips. He not only highly recommended it to me put also praised it by being his favorite. So I borrowed it from him.Unfortunately I found it extremely boring and couldn't even finish it. A few years later that book became part of my academic course. So with a sigh and remembering how boring it was I got back to reading it but to my surprise I actually enjoyed it this time. Wouldn't call it my fav but still.....
Therefore if I see this episode and then read the recap I may change my mind and if I am proven wrong I will admit it.

If chicken master told the truth (wouldn't have as this is a 50 eps show) I wonder what the ramifications would have been. At the moment mom is favoring her student compared to her bio daughter (yes she is not aware of the fact yet) so would she have abandoned Yeon Ah for IU?. It certainly wouldn't be beneath her to do so. I doubt that she would have accepted IU as her daughter ut she may have supported her indirectly.

I guess Yeon Ah is finally going to figure out that Jun Hos sis wanted to become an actress and that she was left because she was frustrated with Mireyong and her teaching method. So do get even with her Ex (for dumping her for a nobody, maybe even feel a bit betrayed by Mireyiong and figuring out why she was so towards his sis) she may offer to train her personally (granted that may not win her any points by the dad :) still would be nice.

Chan Woo and his love square that he is in is hilarious.Granted IU is now out of the pic but the remaing 2 gals are hilarious. I would love to see ljeongs reaction when she discovers that Chan Woo is dating IUs sister another reason for her not to like IU and her family. The girl is quite dense can't really get that Chan Woo is not into her at all.The mom should have informed her already that the doctor is spoken for.

Well for the moment that is all.
I just have a little request for the recappers here. I get it due to time restraints they have decided to join both episodes into one recap.(yes I would certainly like separate recaps) but I am also understanding so I would like them to atleast tell us where one episode ends and where the next one starts from. The reason I am asking for this is that I also post on another site which is a few episodes behind me (and I am a few eps behind here) so when I want to post over there I just glance at the recap here as reference material instead of rewatching an entire episode saves everyone some time and no one is accused of revealing spoilers :)

I bet for my comments I am going to be bashed a lot so if I have offended anyone let me apologize in advance ....

There's no denying that at this point, the drama feels stagnant, boring and draggy...There is so little interaction between the OTP and also between other pairs, the cute or light scene are short and almost not interesting, it's like nothing ever happens lately...I was so charmed at first by this drama, as it had potential for awesome romance and comedy, but I somehow feel cheated after 18 episodes...Ok, the great romace is yet to come as we have 30+ episodes to gradually explore that, but where are the laughs still? The interesting plot lines? Except for Bread Man's hijinks and HJ's dorky behaviour, nothing is funny, like really funny... And the 2 Moms's utter selfishness, especially of her adoptive mother, is quite offputting to see get dragged out in every episode lately, it's like the drama exploits the same points of intrigue over and over again for the past 6-8 episodes now...feels stagnant and frustrating.
I realize it's too soon for comparison, but boy I was hooked like really fast by Smile, You and Ojakgyo Brothers, and they just kept getting better and better with each episode...with You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin it's like losing steam as we advance...

I'll still watch it, but I'm not curious and expectative anymore. Like whatever!

I thought part of the synopsis was that mi ryung took soonshin under her wing... I'm surprised that it was only for a short time...
I also dont know whether soonshin becoming an actress is even the main part. It doesnt seem so, right? It seems to be more about the mothers. But I will say it makes me feel less interested as they have people saying soonshin is training and we see her doing things like working on her image and stuff, but it feels empty of purpose. It's a stage for her to get closer with junho, nothing more really...
I also am curious how much of the star making process shown is true to life..
And I'm confused- soonshin is trying to become an actress right? It just doesnt feel, like there's much believable evidence.. There was more(albeit not substantial) of that, stuff when she was learning from mi ryung, and I think I liked that portion of the drama the most. It showed the changes to soonshin and the way she thought about herself the most well and it seems anticlimatic to have halted that process in the name of frustrating mothers, behind the scenes conspiracies...

Of course, this is just regarding soonshin, the other plot lines of the, sisters I'll have to evaluate another day, but so far it seems like they are progressing ok.

Totally agree with you on SS's plot line of becoming an actress feels devoid of substance and drawn into the background now...it was this main plot's potential for an interesting story that attracted me at first to watch such a long drama... I wouldn't have any problem if SS's process of becoming an actress served as only a context for her and JH to fall in love, if only we would get more drama time focused on that said process and less on the mothers' behind the scenes plot intrigues...Her birth mother's backstabbings are somewhat entertaining to watch, but I'm sick and tired of her adoptive mom's behaviour...less scenes with her, please!

"At least Chan-mi defends Soon-shin—she hasn’t proven herself to be much of a friend so I had my doubts—and runs to warn Soon-shin about the rumors. "

In Chan-mi's defense that's at least partially because she's had what all of 30 seconds of screen time so far kind of hard to do anything with that.

Thanks for the recap. A few things I don't get. Why on earth is mi ryung going out of her way to kill soon shin's hopes and attempts? I can understand the first time was coz she made the connection btween her oppa and soon shin and doesn't want to be connected but isn't it enough to be out of her life? Why is she trying so hard to prevent her from being a star?

Secondly, what is hye sin trying to do? A some point the truth will come out. All her lying now will just make it worse when the cat is finally out of the bag.

I, too love the men in this show. Bread man, sweet chan woo, jun ho and best boss in the world.

Mi ryung is really being set up for a painful time when she finds out the truth!!

Mi Ryung told Jun Ho she sabotaged Soon Shin because she didn't want her "daughter" to be hurt. Ha! Wait until she finds out Soon Shin IS her actual daughter. She'll turn against her adopted daughter so fast, Yeon Ah will get whip lash. Yes, MR is a thoroughly hateful character whom I love hating. Can't wait for her come-uppence. Can't wait for her deceitful house of cards to collapse.

I have been trying to understand Mama Lee ever since her world imploded, but now, like everyone else, I'm just pissed at her attitude and actions toward poor Soon Shin. The final straw was when she said SS was a "horrible daughter" following her dinner table acting performance (which was awesome!). I loved how all the rest of the family was duly impressed, even granny!

And poor Joo Woo. The tearful message that little girl left in her daddy's voice mail had me ready to bawl.

Thank you for the recap. Loved the couple moments they were really sweet.

Last comment on the mother. Are we sure she's written as the nice character? She is sure wallowing in being an absolute bitch to her daughter. You're right, she's not a shining example of motherly love is she? She's downright self- centred and heartless.

Oh, and I just knew this was bound to happen: Snobby restaurant co-worker who warned Soon Shin "not to fall for me" is starting to fall for Soon Shin. Oh the hilarity. It'll be so much fun watching him pine away for her in frustration as she totally ignores him.

I found the make-over of Soon Shin really funny because she looks the same after as she did before lol. IU is pretty, so there isn't much to change about her look. Then again, I think ALL of us would look better if our dress glowed and radiated light.

That's what I thought, that she looked the same.

Which I don't understand, if I'm honest. Are they trying to make a point, or is the show pretending that she really looked different before?

Is it just me, but does anyone else think that Joon Ho’s assistant’s lips are too loose! Why the heck would he blab about his boss’s business to ANYONE! He needs to learn to button his lip. Really, someone smack that assistant up side his head!

Hmmm, the dating rumor - I know, let’s dispel it with a fake relationship with restaurant owner, Young Hoon! Jealous JH would be a sight to see and enjoy!

Wow! Grandma actually complimented Soon Shin - I almost fell out of my chair!! Mom is UGH, but glad to see the sisters encouraging SS.

Best part of this week was the Yoo Shin I-am-demure-and-cute act. Ha ha ha ha ha! And the reactions around her, Hee!

Are we actually sure that Mi Ryung will feel regret when she learns Soo Shin is her daughter? From what I've seen so far, seems she could try all the harder to bury Soo Shin. I suppose Drama Rules will make it so?

they might as well change the synopsis of this drama or the name to "the revenge of the 2 mothers on Lee Soon Shin" ... the show potrayed 80% on these 2 mothers ill treating ppl in 1 episode then only show me tiny little bit of the OTPs...grrrr if not bcoz I really loves these OTPs I would hav dropped tis lot hot potatoes

It's lik nobody in this show knows about DNA test, pls verified b4 u start your revenge on some1 u regard as daughter for 20yrs ... totally illogical

I wanna see these 2 old ladies break down!!

LOL, DNA tests usually turn 50 episode dramas into a 30 minute Maury Povich episode "you ARE the father..."

As a dramatic device, one thing that Mom's behavior does is allow Yoo Shin to quit being so hateful to her little sister and step up to support her little sister. I think if Mom had continued to treat SS well, Yoo Shin would have continued to be jealous and spiteful.

For the rest, while this week I was very ready for Mom to start figuring things out (she reall ought to wonder why SS birth mom does not seem to know that they raised her birthchild, and she would know this if there had been an ongoing affair)= her behavior, while hurtful, ugly to watch, and frustrating is still very psychologically sound to me. She needs help, and she really needs her family to start noticing what triggers her outbursts.

You know, it's at times such as these, that I think God my dream is not to be an actress, because if this is what it is really like, I think I'd crack from the pressure. Which makes me love Soon-shin even more, because no matter what is done to her, she shakes it off, grits her teeth, and forges ahead. I like that about her, and it's what endears her to me. This type of "Candy" personality has been done countless times before, but here I feel it's being done right. Either that, or I'm blinded by IU's adorableness and acting chops.

That being said, I officially hate Mi-ryung again. She utterly confuses me. Is the connection to Chang-hoon really such a detriment to her relationship with Soon-shin? Can a child really be at fault for who their (adoptive or biological) parents are? I would like to ask the same of Mom, here. Poor Soon-shin is being kicked (figuratively) by two women who fill the mother role in her life, and she has no idea why! Mi-ryung, I expected more from, based on her relationship with Yeon-ah, and her desire to be a mother. But that exact reason is what got her in this mess in the first place. If she hadn't entrusted her baby to Chang-hoon, and instead raised her herself, she wouldn't be doing this to Soon-shin, nor would she be so frightened of the truth coming out. It's actually really pathetic. The past will catch up to her, no matter how she may try to run from it. The truth runs faster.

I really don't get this couch casting thing. Is Soon-shin being targeted (no thanks to Mi-ryung) because Jun-ho shows such interest in her career? While we, as the audience, know what's really going on, is it really such a big deal for two people, with mutual interest, where one is boss and the other employee, to date? I mean, isn't Song Ji-hyo dating her agency's CEO? I believe she is or was. Of course, she's already an established actress, and one situation is fictional. I know, for the sake of the drama there must be conflict, but really? Is this conflict really sound? I mean, the argument could be made that Soon-shin is a special project for Jun-ho to show is Midas-touch ability, right? Wouldn't people see that as a good reason? Maybe that's just my wishful thinking. Still, people need to ease up on Soon-shin, or heads will roll.

Yoo-shin and Chan-woo's relationship continues to be sweet and charming, now that they're dating, though I wish Yoo-shin would ease up a little. And Yi-jung has got to be one of the most annoying drama characters I've ever seen. Seriously, I want to fast forward her scenes, but I don't on the principal that I will not miss anything, no matter how trivial.

And Hye-shin needs to tell her mom and grandmother about her divorce. I agree she's running out of excuses, and one of these days she's gonna find herself backed into a corner with no way out but to tell the truth. Better to do it while she can, before such a time occurs. And I love her relationship with Jin-wook. He's the best character here, with a great sense of morality. He's got such a kind heart that he's still nice to Woo-joo, even though she's still so nasty to him. She'll come around, though, once she realizes her daddy is a world-class jerk. His mom is too.

I'm curious about how soon Manager Hwang will realize who Soon-shin really is. He was suspicious in episode 16, but he seems to have pushed those suspicions aside for now. He'll come back to it though, once he realizes Chicken Ahjusshi lied to him. A point of curiosity: Mi-ryung, Chang-hoon, Chicken Ahjusshi, Manager Hwang and Dr. Shin are all from the same neighborhood?

Anyway, thanks for the recap, Javabeans!
