Revenge thriller Shark’s mysterious first teaser
by javabeans
The first teaser is out for KBS’s upcoming revenge melodrama Shark, and it looks pretty spiffy. We barely get a sense of the plot itself since the shark metaphor takes up most of the preview, but it gets across a cold, dark tone that certainly screams revenge thriller. The production looks slick and the camera work is intriguing — it makes me wish I could get past how much this show feels like Kim Nam-gil’s last drama, the revenge melo thriller Bad Guy. I know, totally different plot, totally different drama. (But is it?)
In the teaser, Kim Nam-gil voices over: “Sharks have no air bladders. In order to live, it must constantly be on the move. If it stops, it dies.” We get glimpses of a teary Sohn Ye-jin in a bridal gown, a car crash, and then he continues: “Go on. Don’t turn back. The time has come.” DUN dun!
I’m willing to look past the been-there-done-that sense of familiarity I get here because it looks like at least Shark will have a lot of directorial style and a cool-as-ice vibe. And while the writing will ultimately decide whether this show is any good, it looks like the drama’s got a strong cinematic flair, which is always welcome in dramaland.
I’ll even take Kim Nam-gil repeating the same kind of mysterious vengeful stranger he played Bad Guy, though that means his next drama had better showcase some kind of change. Please? He actually can be dynamic and funny, and that energy gets lost when he plays the cipher, which is a big reason why I couldn’t get behind his character or the revenge plot of Bad Guy. (The other big reason would be that Bad Guy was written by a crazy person.)
Well, it’s one more to look forward to in the upcoming batch. Shark follows God of the Workplace on Mondays and Tuesdays and will air its first episode on May 27.

Even though the plot feels like a Bad Guy Number 2, but I am still greatly anticipating it. The cast is just AWESOME!!! Just Kim Nam Gil and Sohn Ye Jin are enough to make me go gaga (though I thought a comedy-romance will be even better xD). I am still putting my bets on this drama and not let Bad Guy dampen my spirits for it.
Just a random thought. Kim Nam Gil's partner in Bad Guy was Han Ga In and this time it is Sohn Ye Jin. I always thought the 2 ladies look alike in a way, so I thought it is such a coincidence that his onscreen partner before and after army are both of them respectively. Haha~ Don't mind me. I am spouting nonsense which I dunno if it even makes any sense.xP

I also have huge reservations because of the similarity to Bad Guy. I'm just hoping this show can be a redemption of sorts for Bad Guy, so we can get an actual normal ending that doesn't make you want to throw something at the TV and scream "I wasted 17 hours of my life watching this show to end up with *this*?!"
Ahem. Moving on to the trailer, I thought it was very promising and cool. It makes me want to give Shark a shot, in any case.

Well at least SYJ can act...but no matter how brilliant the cast, if the writing isn't up to par I can never watch the full drama. So here's to hoping that the drama lives up to the promises in its premise! I would hate for a repeat of Bad Guy... KNG deserves better!

I think this drama will be better than bad guy..I have faith in these writers they wrote some of the best korean revenge stories:mawang and resurrection and also sohn ye jin is a much better actress than han ga in who largely contributed to bad guy's suckiness and had no chemistry with KNG.

I don't know if I'm going to watch this one since I haven't been in the mood in watching anything...at all. The teaser and the play in the letters that look like shark is really great. This is a well directed and edited trailer I have to say.

sorry, but I loved Bad Guy and its ending a Hell lot !
as my username suggests I take a lot interest in melodramas! and sad endings too
I don't know why but I loved pierce my heart or but a big stone on my heart by watching sad endings ..(y am I that cold?) like A love to kill , MISA , Bad Guy , etc etc ...
And so I hope this one too has a SAD ending! (dont kill me !)
uhm LOVE YOU SOHN YE JIN NOOOOONA :)

KNG's stare is something else. Just even thinking about it makes my heart beat faster. If he ever did that to me IRL, well, I'd probably laugh, but on screen, he's killing me softly. Hear that Oppa? You're killing me! And I like it...

Revenge dramas are my fave.... when done right it's beautiful and Bad Guy was an example of revenge drama done wrong......The reason for revenge and how it was done didn't make sense.....So here's to hoping this one makes sense and hits the nail on the head to produce a beautiful piece.....

Maybe its the passage of time or just my psyche blocking the bad memoroies....but,this doesn't remind remind me Bad Guy at all...sure there's a certain familiar slickness but that is reminiscent of most noir dramas in recent memory.....this was really cool and KNG looks slimmer too..even the flashback felt different..plus Son Ye Jin!

Isn't Shark being done by the people who gave us Resurrection and The Devil? That alone is worth the price of admission. KNG is just super fabulous wonderful icing on the cake. :)

waaa, *love* the part with the armchair and shark swimming beneath. i have a thing for metaphorical teaser making. for teasers in general, its an art form of its own.
drama teasers seem to be in the process of turning out way better than the average hollywood cutting-some-scenes-together-always-same-sound-effects teaser formula.
sure a different subject matter wouldnt have hurt, but if it turns out good... and its understandable for kng to want to have another go at revenge after bad guy not ending up all that satisfactory.

wow the trailer is beautiful if only the writer of this one is not as crazy as bad guy i'll be a faithful watcher, because i absolutely love this girl i was waiting for her to return to dramaland, last time was quite disappointing..... i just love the premise its the old the love that can't be but i have to say when it's done right i'm a big sucker for this trope..

Hopefully Sohn Ye-jin gets to be an actual lead . . . from this clip, it looks too much like KNG's story and they could slip in some actress who needs a paycheck to fill up the token leading lady space. SYJ deserves better.

The shark swimming underneath him was eerie and spooky in a really beautiful way.
I think I am also just hoping that it will be an excellent addition to its trilogy - Rebirth and The Devil being its predecessors - which I still need to watch...and not a failure. The writer/director pairing though seem to have done well with the other revenge dramas in the past, so I am hoping for good things.

TRILOGY!!
That trailer was vague but piqued my interest, nonetheless. I just hope my expectations don't get too high. Oh, who am I kidding, it's too late. I just hope it at least meets its predecessors. Resurrection might be a tall order, but hopefully it'll be up to par with The Devil. Well, even if it dips a bit from the previous two, it'll probably still be better than a lot of other dramas that have been produced.

I've never had the opportunity of watching any of Kim Nam Gil's work but I've seen and read articles about him. I'm just curious, has he always gone with the moustache image. It's rare to see a korean actor with a permanent moustache.
