Ha Ji-won returns to dramaland

MBC has a new drama in the works, and it’s a good news/good news/bad news kind of situation. Mathwise, that works out favorably, no? First, in the good column: Ha Ji-won (The King 2 Hearts, Secret Garden) is headlining as the leading lady. Score one point for Show. The drama will be a Goryeo-era sageuk about Yuan Empress Ki, called Hwatu. As in the card game? What a weird thing to call your drama. I saw the title and thought this was going to be the Tazza remake, but apparently it has nothing to do with that. (While hwatu means “flower” and “fighting,” they’re using the name of the card game as their working title.)

The drama is planning for a fall broadcast, following Moon Geun-young’s Goddess of Fire Jung-yi. It’s not surprising, since MBC has it practically set in stone that its Monday-Tuesday programming will be a rotating wheel of sageuk. The drama will be written by the team behind Giant, History of the Salaryman, and Incarnation of Money, so Show gets another point. They’re a good team, and can range from hysterically funny to epically epic, and everything in between. And then the bad news… directing is the PD of Dr. Jin and Personal Taste. I know. That’s like minus 3000 points. Who keeps giving this guy dramas to direct??

Ha Ji-won stars as Empress Ki, born in Goryeo and taken to be a concubine of the Yuan emperor. She eventually becomes empress and is a key figure during the time of King Gongmin’s coup against the Mongol state. (It’s the same timeline as Faith, and she’s the sister of Ki Chul.) The drama will be about her turbulent life story, from being taken to a foreign country to becoming empress, as she attempts to protect her pride and identity as a person from Goryeo, eventually falls in love, and makes political waves.

I like the idea, but with this director, I’m pretty sure you could take a hundred A-list ingredients and he’d still find a way to turn it into drama hodgepodge. Silver lining, anyone? I’m fresh out.

Hwatu follows Goddess of Fire, which puts its premiere in mid-October.

Oh my goodness. I would love to see Song Joong Ki again...but the PD and the setting as Goguryeo? sigh. That is my least favorite period in sagueks because 1. the costumes and sets look so cheesy because 2. There isn't as much history on it as the Joseon period, lets say, and thus, actually a lot of times, writers take TOO much liberty with it and it just feels like I'm watching a modern drama with funky clothes. I like my sagueks not accurate, per se, but not silly.

Goguryeo was a different era (3 kingdom era). Goryeo was the era before Joseon.
I agree with #2. Since this is about Empress Ki, there isn't much history there. I think she was vaguely mentioned in history because of her association with a well know Yuan leader.

He has to go to the army... and given the subject material, they're going to go for a much older actor imo. This kind of pairing might fly in a modern romcom but would look seriously out of place in a sageuk.

Ha Ji Won? I don't love her, but she's nice. Goryeo? Ok, but the cast will determine my like/dislike. Writers Jang and Jung? Excellent! 'Dr. Jin' PD? HEEEEEEEELL NO!!!

I'm really more scared than optimistic for this at this point. I am hoping the writers have more power to control the way things go than the PD and I hope they can tame the channel too. Let's not forget, it was MBC which gave us the head-bashing, universe-destroying fetus-in-brain "doctor" and his candle-lit breast cancer exams.

I need more info. For now, I'm keeping my hopes way down. I have not seen the writers' work without Yoo In Sik as the PD and SBS as the channel (I have not seen Jang's 'The King Dae Joyoung', which was on KBS), so anything goes, at this point.

Aaaah, I know it's still far away, but will Ah-Ha couple meet each other at MBC Drama Awards this year? They didn't come last year, maybe this year? Sadly, if they really come, they won't be from the same drama, and they won't sit at the same table. My most favorite couple from last year, I want to see their reunion badly.

It's an ABSOLUTE necessary, since they're siblings and all, but I highly doubt Yoo Oh-seong would cameo back as Ki Cheol. Tho I hope they should cast someone who'd be as memorable(?) as Ki Cheol.

It's a bit interesting irony, since "Shindon" featured Empress Ki, but not her brother, and recently "Faith" featured Ki Cheol but only mentions of her imperial sister. XP See my point?

I was all for this drama until they mentioned the PD. *shudder* Well...there's always hope, right? This could be the one that finally makes it for him! I mean, look what My Princess did for SSH and...and...um, what's her name. Drat, it's on the tip of my tongue. But you know what I mean! No one thought much of their acting and then, bam!, they do MP and we discover that they can be great given the right stuff.

How would the PD ruin the drama? Aren't the writers the one controlling the drama? Doesn't the PD just give directions? Help?

Yea, the PD's role is hard to define, but it's definitely important. He/she controls the lighting, music, camera work, all in all the tone of the scene (whether it skews funny, or grave, or epic). They choose what scenes come in order and what cuts to what, how long to linger in a scene, where to place the action visually, all that stuff.

Basically, it's a lot of stuff a newbie like me doesn't know to notice, but you can definitely get that "off" feeling when the PD's bad. And this guy is bad :(

See drama examples above. Or Faith. A good PD elevates the drama even if the acting and/or writing's just average. A bad PD makes an average drama/actor look even more flawed. Well, for me PT or Faith (why does LMH get these awful PDs???) could have been much better with a good director. As for Dr. Jin, maybe it could have been worse with a good PD? Hahaha! From all accounts, it was unintentionally hilarious. :)

Literally this PD has a choppy editing. This is a big NO.

Frankly I loved Personal Taste, but I took a big pill of "ignore the bad editing",

Dr Jin - I didn't even had patience to finish the first episode even though Park Min Young is one of my fav Kactresses and the drama was full of pretty testosterone. I really didn't didn't like the CG scenes. I wanted them classy and mature and he gave me childish SF. C'mon I watched whole SF shows no matter the spin off as Stargate or Star Trek but I never found something as all over the place as the first episode of Dr Jin.

This comes from a person who even likes Nail Shop Paris - other people who gave me half stories about gumihos and an unbelievable story about ghosts. They didn't warn me in the synopsis when this drama was pre-produced and had plenty of time to tell me so.

I think of directing like this: say you have a scene, and the writer wrote it to be a sad scene. The actor and the actress who are playing the parts, they realize it is a sad scene and so they pour their hearts out, and the tears are falling, because they know it is a sad scene. And the costume designer and the set designer have dressed everything in somber colors. If the director is good, you will cry buckets right along with the characters. If the director is bad, it could be one of the most outrageously silly things you've seen.

I was SO SO excited and once i got to the director of dr.jin my excitement deflated until there was none left.
Seriously, do they not realize this director sucks balls? Even an awesome script, awesome actors, awesome costumes can be ruined by a really bad director.
The director is the one who has a clear vision for the whole show/movie as a whole, which is why in the end sometimes you hear more about the directors than the writers.
And everyone above, you've said it all.
an awesome script doesn't mean an awesome show. Clunky editing, bad transitions, awkward directing, weird camerawork... The writer tells us what happens, but the director is the HOW of the what... how the scene unfolds. A scene can look quite amateur with a bad director, but with an experienced director, can look slicker than grease. And can even distract you from a bad script(even though it doesn't excuse it).
Sigh. I guess i'll be passing this up. Or maybe just watch to get a good laugh..
Wheres heads?

At least, even if the drama is shot by an incompetent person (a few months left to take lessons from Director for Dummies), I'm sure it will be bearable, thanks to a decent team of scriptwriters (no Bore Doctor#2, please). It highlighted the great comedy skills of Song Seung Heon. The more melodramatic he tried to be, the more hilarious it was. So you could say he gave a boost to him, yes.

Plus, it made two comedies for Lee Beom Soo in a year and gave Jae Joong an interesting character to work with, along with a fake six-pack. :P

I hope someone whips the PD into shape. If he ruins the story written by these two, I will virtually stone him.

PT was ok for its genre. Still uninspired directing, but it's a rom-com, so there aren't exactly high expectations. I absolutely love Lee Beom Soo and Kang Ji Hwan. I hate 'Marry Me, Mary' and can't stand the sight of Jang Geun Suk, so I made a deal with the Dramagods. If the two first gentlemen were to be in a series by the Giant/Salaryman/IOM PD and writer trio, I would watch that godawful series as a thanks. A sacrifice. Of my time and sanity. Trying to temp the Dramagods into granting me pretty epic a wish.

But if these two were to somehow end up together in a well-written story by a bad PD such as this one, I would be so gutted. XD

I doubt it, the Chinese have their own version of that part of history. They will have to make her connection with Goryeo as the main focus if they want the Korean viewers to be interested in it.
I'd rather watch her and Queen Noguk go at it. Like QSD and Mishil.

0

Required fields are marked *

QSD was an interesting drama but it had tons of testosterone to back-up the cat fight. Both girls were amazing and the side characters were one more interesting than another. Hwarangs were one colective character as individual characters. Alcheon was love, Kim Chun Chu was cute to boot yet if played by another actor he could be as annoying as any royal brat can be. So Hwa was one of the most interesting - a running slave with a child in her arms. After years So Hwa comes back with her kidnapper and she has a strong Stockholm syndrome.

However the same team that made QSD made Tree with deep roots and I dropped this one at the 14th episode. For me the pace was a bit slower than QSD.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Tree lived up to its name. It was deep with politics and it was basically a brainy drama. QSD was the opposite, it was a sit back, relax, enjoy the show and let the fans and the ratings decides the ending. I didn't like how the Hwarangs were portrayed here. Their loyalty were obviously to Mishil their wonwha instead of the king who established the organization in the first place.

Great point, especially since Empress Ki is known as a traitor in Korea. I read that the male lead may be Choi Young... Really? Empress Qi (the Chinese way of reading it) is seen as a traitor? But then again, Korean girls whisked away to somewhere else, back then, were then conisdered "dead" to everyone, so it may not be surprising if she's seen as such.

Required fields are marked *

Thing is, Koreans LOVE their sageuks. Even the worst ones (Jin, The Great Seer, Faith) have better ratings than most of the "current era good dramas". No 4.5% in ratings with a sageuk... They also tend to be longer (25 to 50 eps) which means that the grid is occupied for a long time. For the channels, it's simplier to manage (unless a problem happens during the production of course).

I wonder how Korean viewers would react if the male lead is the Yuan emperor. Empress Ki didn't go to Yuan willingly. She was among many young girls who were basically given as tribute to the Yuan during their domination over Koryo. A book I read stated that the Yuan emperor who married Empress Ki spent a year as a boy in exile on an island close to Korea, and this possibly could be the reason why he favored Empress Ki, a woman from Koryo.

Kim Hye Ri has been in a lot of sageuks. Ha Ji-won is a newbie in comparison but it's really hard for me to dismiss this drama because of the writers. Jang is no stranger to sageuks, he wrote Dae Jo Yeong back in 2006.

Empress Ki is said to be a very beautiful woman. That could be another reason. When Yuan was overthrown by Ming the emperor took her in as a concubine (unconfirmed though). She was a foreigner so it is possible that she was omitted from the that part of history on purpose.

I'm watching it!!!

It's a pity about the PD though. Never started watching Dr. Jin, but Personal Taste was a serious waste of Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ho.

In any case, news that Ha Ji Won is back in dramaland makes me super excited. I wonder who the male lead is going to be but she has superb chemistry with anyone!

If only it wasn't this PD... story sounds pretty good otherwise. Although these writers are uneven for me, I didn't really like Incarnation of Money. I think sageuk suits Ha Ji Won really well, perhaps even better than modern shows.

On a random note, she looks totally fabulous in that picture.

With beautiful and multi talented Ha Ji Won around, I'm least worried over the Director...Hahaha She can transform from anything bad to best! She's amazing!!! Cheers to Hawtu! Who is the lucky guy as her beau?

OMG saeguk Ha ji won the writers awesome combination but its true the PD just deducted the grand total by 3000 points..... i would also like to question who gave this man a job i kind of liked personal taste if turned off my logic system but the editing there was absolutely choppy the scenes were just mixed together in a hodgepodge so yup really worried for this drama..... i just noticed why does lee min ho gets the worst PDs ever? (hint: bbf, pt) or sometimes the writers?? (hint: heirs, faith)

aww
does this mean .. personal taste is. a BAD drama?
please don't say that ! I'm watching it . I don't want to waste my 5hours !!....

[OFF-TOPIC]
is this drama called "SHE IS NINETEEN(2003)"
worth watching?..
I've downloaded it .
I think it will be a good romantic drama ..?
I am watching it because of the lead actress Jung Da Bin ..
I heard she was a good person and a good actress ... whose life was cut short by her suicide...

i think it depends on your personal taste. for me, it's one of my favourite kdramas alongside Hardtack Teacher n Star Candy(Biscuit Teacher) which is apparently hated a lot over here looking at the comments and also Autumn Shower(which isn't liked the the majority as well it seems)

But She is 19/My 19 Yrs Old Sister in Law is like any average romcom has its light funny early parts and those angsty later parts. well, you'll get to watch Yoon Kyesang n his heartbleeding crush for his 'sis in law to be'...the friends are funny too...xD.....aww, Jung Dabin...i liked her after watching this drama. i remember hearing about her suicide news one day...and shocked since i was just watching her drama...

well.. I wonder who is the male lead.. 2 out of 3 is not that bad.. The Director must have get on his knees of the Higher up and ask forgiveness so now he can direct this drama. By the way, PT is a MBC rite? So, He is MBC director only????

i really hope jang hyuk will be cast along wth HJW for once. because i cant help wondering how this pair gonna be. maybe iris 2 is doom but i only can stand it because of him. they both really in the same league i think. 2 daesang winner in one drama. how great it can be? remember JH once said he want to play a king role in a drama.

WHY?! WHY?! OH, THE HUMANITY!? I have absolutely no understanding of why you would take a sure thing, 100% piece of pure awesome and then give it to one of the worst PDs in the business? Are all the other PDs going on sabbatical during that time? If there is one thing I have learned about Kdramas it is that a good PD can make or break you no matter the writing or the cast (uhm, Faith, anyone). Ha Ji Won is my favorite actress. Sageuks are my favorite genre. And the writing team on this project is one of my faves. I'm just devastated.
