Gu Family Book: Episode 14
by girlfriday
It’s an episode of reveals, as practically every single character drops a bomb or gets one dropped on them. One daddy goes postal—no, make that two dads, both postal—and start wrecking lives. We’re gonna put those Father’s Day cards on hold until you guys stop killing, maiming, and/or crushing the hearts of young women who just want to date the half-human boy of her choice, okay?

EPISODE 14 RECAP
Wol-ryung greets his old friend matter-of-factly, noting how much he’s aged. So-jung says that time isn’t something humans can cheat, and Wol-ryung wonders (almost with pity for the tiny ants) why humans live those measly hundred years as if they were a thousand.
So-jung asks carefully if he came back a thousand-year demon, which uh, can’t you tell by the eyeliner and spiffy black duds that he’s eeeevil? Wol-ryung has his own questions first, and demands to know about the half-human half-gumiho he saw in the woods tonight.
He saw So-jung’s bracelet on him, so there’s no backing out of an answer. “Who is he?”
Meanwhile, Kang-chi races through the lantern festival and runs right into Yeo-wool without recognizing her, so she calls out to him. He goes slackjawed at the pretty girl and finally manages to say, “Dam Yeo-wool?”
She gets a little bashful, and he just continues to stare. Man, that was just as good the second time around.
We take a sharp cut to the party at the Hundred Year Inn, in honor of our Mystery Woman. Soo-ryun plays the drums as requested, just as she did twenty years ago.
Back at the festival, Kang-chi slowly takes a few steps toward Yeo-wool, and she waits expectantly for a response. The thing he says: “Why… did you come looking like this?” *facepalm*
That’s not the reaction she was hoping for, but she soldiers on as casually as possible: “I dress like this sometimes. Why… is it weird?” Kang-chi just stares and stares, still totally dazed, and nods, “Yeah.” Augh. BOYS.
She starts to get self-conscious and asks what’s weird about it, and he just digs his grave even further: “Just… all of it.” Doofus. She gets mad, of course, and stalks away muttering that she’s going home so he doesn’t have to be with a weirdo, and he hurriedly chases after her, insisting that’s not how he meant it.
She whirls around in his face, making him even more flustered, if that’s possible, and asks how he DID mean it then. Just tell her she looks so pretty it makes you feel all weird inside! Instead, he just blinks and stammers and finally says it’s because she doesn’t look like herself.
She grumps, “This is me too!” Kang-chi: “Okay. Don’t get mad.” It’s infuriating, but cute. She sighs at herself this time, wondering what she was expecting from him.
She turns to go and he grabs an inch of her clothing to stop her, which cracks me up—this coming from the guy who tackles her at every opportunity when she’s wearing pants. She snaps that they have to go buy wishes for their lanterns, and wriggles free.
They hang up a wish, and Yeo-wool asks if he likes what she wished for. He looks over at her, confused—this wasn’t his wish? Yeo-wool: “That you’ll find the Gu Family Book and become human. That’s my wish.” Awwwwww.
He just looks at her without a word, and she finally jokes that he’ll stare a hole right through her head. And then they just stand there, doing the staring dance back and forth, stealing glances and being adorable.
But someone is watching them from afar—it’s Wol-ryung, and Kang-chi can feel his presence. But when he looks up, no one’s there.
Soo-ryun finishes her performance, and Jo Gwan-woong asks his esteemed guest what she thought. Mystery Woman says in Japanese that it was terrible and gets up to leave. Soo-ryun apologizes, and Chung-jo gets all fired up in her defense, demanding to know what she found so wrong with it.
This time the woman answers in perfect Korean, that the performance had no soul. Jo Gwan-woong stops her to comment that one could almost say she was from Joseon, but her assistant simply says he taught her the language. It doesn’t convince him, because he’s a suspicious bastard.
Soo-ryun comes to apologize, and he tells her to come back tomorrow to regain some favor with his guest. He warns that her days as the head gisaeng are numbered.
Chung-jo walks through the street, reminiscing how different last year’s festival was with Kang-chi and Tae-seo. When she looks up, there’s Kang-chi standing right in front of her, but her face falls to see Yeo-wool by his side.
She turns away first, but when a drunken man starts to harass her, Kang-chi steps in, leaving Yeo-wool behind. He walks Chung-jo back home, and asks if she’s still afraid of him, thinking that’s why she can’t look him in the eye.
She asks if Yeo-wool knows what he is, and her heart sinks to hear that she does. She turns around to address him formally, and says she’ll repay him with a drink for escorting her home. He tells her to stop pretending that she’s someone else, and to stop talking that way: “No matter what you wear, no matter where you live, to me you’re just Park Chung-jo!”
Chung-jo bites back: “So you’re saying that a gisaeng shouldn’t live as a gisaeng, like a monster not living like a monster, pretending to be human?” Ouch. Her eyes fill with tears as soon as she steps foot inside.
By the time Kang-chi wanders back to the street where he left Yeo-wool, it’s nearly dawn. He finds her standing there still, waiting for him, back in her regular clothes and holding her new hanbok in a sack. Why does that break my heart so?
She puts on a smile when she sees him and comes bounding up: “You’ve returned!” Kang-chi: “You’ve returned too, to the person I know.” Her face falls as she says yes, and then asks, “She’s the most important person to you, isn’t she—Chung-jo—the meaning of which won’t ever change, will it?”
He’s stunned by the question and doesn’t answer, so she immediately retracts and starts walking away. He suddenly runs after her and whirls her around…
They look into each other’s eyes and he finally opens his mouth… “I’m hungry.” Pfffft. That’s all you’ve got to say?! He covers up the awkward moment with a smile and says they might as well eat, and she laughs.
Back at the school, Teacher Gong and Gon are just finding out that the pair of them have stayed out all night… together. Gon has a meltdown of epic proportions, which I could watch all day.
He screams that he’ll kill Kang-chi, and Teacher Gong has to hold him back so that Master Dam doesn’t find out and kill the both of them. Of course Master Dam walks right up looking for Yeo-wool, and Teacher Gong lies that he sent the both of them on an errand early this morning.
Teacher Gong: “Isn’t that right, Gon?” Gon can barely get out a yes through his gritted teeth, but it’s enough to appease Master Dam and they sigh in relief.
But then another student comes running up in a panic screaming someone’s name. They follow him out to the back woods to find one of their students sucked dry and hanging from a tree. Eep. Master Dam asks Teacher Gong where he sent Yeo-wool and Kang-chi. Double eep.
They’re having breakfast in town, when a couple of guys at the next table over loudly cancel their order, refusing to eat near the bastard who killed his own benefactor. Kang-chi ignores them, but it’s Yeo-wool who gets upset, wondering how long he’s going to keep letting people think he killed Lord Park.
Kang-chi tries to stop her, and says he’s responsible for his death no matter how you look at it, so it’s not worth fighting. But the idiots keep mouthing off, so Yeo-wool kicks him down.
Just as the fight is about to break out, local thug Ma Bong-chul arrives with a few boys in tow and puts a stop to it with a threat. Everyone assumes it’s aimed at Kang-chi, and so they’re all flabbergasted when he directs it at the other guys, and coos at Kang-chi that if anyone messes with him, he’s got his back.
He barks at his boys to call Kang-chi hyungnim from now on, and says he’s not the kind of person who wouldn’t repay the person who saved his life, and winks. Twice. Kang-chi and Yeo-wool cringe in unison. Hee.
Gon tracks them down, and Yeo-wool immediately panics—did Dad find out she was out all night with Kang-chi? They both panic, and Gon gives Kang-chi the side-eye, but there are more urgent matters at hand, and he tells them about the student who was found dead.
Kang-chi returns, wanting to see the body for himself, but the other students start in with an interrogation instead, demanding to know where he was last night. Yeo-wool faces the same question from Dad, and she tells him the truth. It doesn’t go well.
He says that she’s always done the right thing her whole life, and that’s why he’s trusted her and let her do as she wanted until now. Yeo-wool: “But when it comes to Kang-chi, you can’t trust me?” He cuts her off, not wanting to hear the rest.
Tae-seo sees the way the other students are treating Kang-chi, and tells Master Dam that he’s ready to be an undercover agent. He thinks Jo Gwan-woong is staging these murders to make it look like Kang-chi is guilty. So you’re going to play the mole to clear his name? That’s sweet. Dangerous, but at least he’s motivated by something good this time.
Soo-ryun goes to see Mystery Woman to give a formal apology for her performance, but the woman admits that she loved it and lied, because there was no other way to get a meeting with Soo-ryun. Innnteresting.
She asks to come visit the gisaeng house, but Soo-ryun turns her down flat, and says that there are only two ways for a woman to enter the gisaeng house—become a gisaeng, or become the owner.
Jo Gwan-woong can’t get it out of his head that he’s met the mystery woman before, but can’t figure out where…
Mystery Woman gets undressed for a bath, and though we’re still not shown her face, her bare back shows a gisaeng’s tattoo, and scars… from claws digging into her shoulder. Dude, they totally went there. It’s Seo-hwa.
Master Dam sits the kids down to tell them about Tae-seo going undercover, and then announces that once it’s done, Yeo-wool will marry him. WUT. Daaaaaaaaad. Can’t you just ground her for a thousand years?
She protests that it’s so sudden, but he says it’s long been promised between the fathers, and declares that from now on she’ll drop everything and start learning her future wifely duties. Ack, somebody stop him.
He leaves all four kids stunned speechless. (And really, did we have to invite all three guys who are in love with her for this conversation, or was that the point?) Yeo-wool and Kang-chi look up at each other, while Gon has another silent fit. Teacher Gong follows Master Dam out to ask if it’s really necessary to go that far, but he won’t be talked down.
Yeo-wool runs out of the room with Gon chasing after her, leaving Kang-chi and Tae-seo sitting there. Talk about your awkward silences. Aw man, and we just got this bromance back. What the frak are they gonna do now?
Gon follows Yeo-wool to her room, and finds her huddled by her new hanbok. She tells him she wants to be alone, and as soon as he shuts the door she erupts in tears.
Chung-jo practices the drums with fierce determination, thinking back to the moment she pulled away from Kang-chi when he came to get her, when she threw rocks at him in fear of the monster he had become, and then seeing him with Yeo-wool that night.
She collapses to the floor covered in sweat, and says aloud: “You said you didn’t want him, Park Chung-jo. You called him a monster.”
She gets called out to see Jo Gwan-woong, and receives her old maidservant as a gift. She’s not impressed though, and says he’d have to give her the Hundred Year Inn before she felt any kind of satisfaction.
Today she settles for him kicking Wol-sun out, which he does at the drop of a hat, in front of all the other girls. Chung-jo sits down and pours him a drink, and he notes that she’s enduring well.
She says he’s the one who taught her to do anything to survive: “So I decided to do just that—I will do whatever it takes to live till the end, and stab you through the heart with my own hands.” Excellent. He’s surprised by the answer, but the bastard likes it, and says he’ll sit by and watch over her until she does.
Kang-chi goes back to bean counting, and jumps out of his skin when he finds Teacher Gong sitting there watching him. The old fogey teases that he’s lost his mind because of Yeo-wool’s impending wedding, which Kang-chi denies.
He asks how many beans he’s up to, and then asks, “How many have you counted without your bracelet on?” Kang-chi flips out at the question, swearing up and down that he promised Master Dam he would never take his bracelet off around people.
Teacher Gong: “Is that so?” Kang-chi: “It is!” Teacher Gong: “Is it?” Kang-chi: “That’s what I said!” Teacher Gong: “Okay.”
He hobbles away, and then turns back, “Was it Yeo-wool? The reason you don’t turn into a beast even without your bracelet on.” Kang-chi just stares wide-eyed, and the old man wonders aloud, “How is that possible?” like he’s leaving Kang-chi his next riddle. Ha, I love him.
Flashback to his last bean-counting session, when Yeo-wool had fallen asleep on his shoulder. Kang-chi carefully pulls his bracelet off and shuts his eyes, and when he opens them… he’s still in human form.
And then again at the festival, while she looks up at the lanterns, he puts his hands behind his back and squeezes his eyes shut. A wind blows through, and he looks over at Yeo-wool, who just smiles back at him like normal.
He looks down and breaks into a smile. Behind his back, he’s holding his bracelet in his hand.
Kang-chi narrates: “I honestly don’t know why—how those things happen when Yeo-wool is next to me.” Back in the present, he looks down at his bracelet with another smile.
But suddenly he can feel someone standing behind him, and he turns around to find Wol-ryung smiling back at him. Omo, did he come knowing that Kang-chi is his son?
Kang-chi asks who he is, and bolts up to confront him. But he sends his beans spilling everywhere in the process, and in the split second he looks down, Wol-ryung disappears.
Master Dam takes Gon, Teacher Gong, and Tae-seo to introduce to Lee Soon-shin, and this time they introduce themselves formally as the Men of Honor. Oooh, ooh, was Gon one of them? Where’s the fourth?
Eeeee! It’s Soo-ryun! Is that what her sash was code for?
So the four have finally been uncovered, along with their secret-agent symbols: Gon (apricot blossom), Teacher Gong-dal (bamboo), Tae-seo by way of Lord Park (chrysanthemum), and Soo-ryun (orchid). They bow and pledge their allegiance to Lee Soon-shin.
The first mission is for Tae-seo to return to Jo Gwan-woong, who’s been waiting for him to find out how Lee Soon-shin is spending Lord Park’s silver. Tae-seo tells him he’s building a new kind of ship, and shows him a drawing of the turtle ship plans.
Flashback to the secret meeting, where Lee Soon-shin says they have to give Jo Gwan-woong enough of the truth for him to bite, and tells Tae-seo that his job is to find out if he simply sells secrets to foreign countries, or is in deeper.
So-jung wakes up… on the floor in his library? Wait, has he been knocked out all this time? This is bad. Very bad.
We go back to the conversation that opened the episode, where Wol-ryung asks who Kang-chi is. So-jung says he’s Seo-hwa’s son, and Wol-ryung’s. His reaction is strangely nonexistent, as if he can barely remember who Seo-hwa is.
He asks what happened to her, and when So-jung tells him she died, Wol-ryung says, “That’s too bad. I wanted to snap her neck myself.” Whoa.
He continues, “You asked why I returned? I came to destroy everything.” His eyes glow red, and he throws So-jung into the wall, knocking him out. Back in the present, So-jung struggles to get up, “No, Kang-chi…”
Yeo-wool finds out that Kang-chi is missing, and when one of the students mutters that he must be off in the woods killing someone else, she puts him in his place. He whines that everyone’s taking Kang-chi’s side when he isn’t even human, but she makes it clear there are no sides here, and she’d defend him the same way if everyone started accusing him of murder. Touché.
It’s nightfall by the time Master Dam and Gon hear that Yeo-wool ran off into the woods alone to look for Kang-chi, which is more dumb than brave, I’ll give you that. Gon goes after her. She runs further and further into the woods, calling out to Kang-chi. But that’s not where he is… crap crap crap.
He’s just arriving at So-jung’s house, and he runs down to the library when he hears someone down there. He finds So-jung struggling to stay conscious, and he just keeps telling Kang-chi to run as far away as he can.
Kang-chi asks why he’s saying these things, and So-jung ekes out, “He’s here… to kill you… Wol-ryung… your father.” Eeeee. “Run. Run far away, where he can’t find you, Kang-chi-ya. Hurry!”
Yeo-wool hears a rustling nearby and calls out to Kang-chi. But it’s Wol-ryung’s red eyes that glow back at her. She draws her sword, and he starts to run around her in circles, like he’s taunting his prey.
She takes off running, and he gives chase, just as Kang-chi runs out of So-jung’s house. Please tell me that other time wasn’t a fluke and you can smell her or something.
Yeo-wool trips and falls, and Wol-ryung steps out from the shadows, sans red eyes. She looks up at the imposing figure and thinks in her head, “Kang-chi-ya, help me!”
Kang-chi stops in his tracks. “Yeo-wool-ah!” Wait, can you hear her??
Wol-ryung steps closer and crouches down. He puts a hand to her chin to lift her face up, and then smiles at her. Well that’s ominous.
COMMENTS
Okay, so lots of reveals in this episode. I guess the Seo-hwa twist wasn’t too far-fetched after all. Sigh. I hope there’s going to be a good explanation for her character—that she’s alive, I can buy, but why she’s been hiding away for twenty years without ever looking for her son is the thing that’s going to need a good excuse. While I’m curious about her plan to get back at Jo Gwan-woong, I personally would prefer Chung-jo to get her revenge, because I’m far more invested in her character. I do like that Seo-hwa is Jo Gwan-woong’s weakness as much as she is his obsession, so that should come in handy down the line.
And even though we all knew Wol-ryung would come back evil, it still shocked me just how cold and unfeeling he was with So-jung. Do thousand-year demons not have that paternal instinct, even if it’s to groom a son for an evil empire? I guess he really is just here to destroy everything, though the fact that he’s smart about it rather than just your smash-kill-kill kind of villain is great. It seems he’ll take his time to hunt Kang-chi (and Yeo-wool) and enjoy toying with them. Creepy.
Even though it’s not a huge plot point, I’ve been waiting for the reveal of the four Men of Honor. I didn’t expect Gon because of his age, so that was a nice surprise, but I totally did a fist-pump when they panned over to Soo-ryun. Hers is a backstory I’m dying to know. I love the slow careful reveal of tiny bits of her humanity that began with her sympathy for Seo-hwa and Chung-jo, to her work on behalf of Master Dam, and now this. I hope they take these four someplace interesting, storywise.
The marriage wrench does feel like a maneuvered obstacle, but I actually don’t mind it. It makes perfect sense that Park Mu-sol and Dam Pyung-joon would have promised their children to each other, and given their ages and the time, Yeo-wool would be facing this very problem no matter who the fiancé was. It’s just mean because you know Dad’s reacting to her growing attachment to Kang-chi, and is doing the only thing he can. It’s actually a good thing for the story, because now maybe Mr. I’m-So-Hungry can stop deflecting his feelings and do something. And I love to watch Yeo-wool defy expectations at every turn, and I’m sure this won’t be any different. I mean, does Dad really expect her to put down her sword and pick up needlepoint?
The best reveal of course was the bracelet, especially because I never expected Kang-chi to test it out like that. I was waiting for another emergency situation where she has to talk him back to his human form, but I love that he’s learning on the same curve we are, and testing himself to see if it’s true. So now we know that she really is his human bracelet, and his tether to humanity. Teacher Gong has all the right questions, of course: How is such a thing possible, and why only her? Yes, WHY?

So, this was yet another interesting episode, with a lot of revelations, as GF indicated. Again, I have some questions, and there are things that I hope to find out, as I continue to watch this drama.
1--One of the things that the writer didn't tell us in this episode (and I don't know that we will ever know), is how teacher Gong knew that KC took his bracelet off, twice. I am very curious about that, yet I doubt that I will get the answer to my question (at least from the drama people). From KC's reaction to Gong's question/comment, it seems clear that KC didn't tell him anything about the tests he did. So how did Gong find out? Does he have a sixth sense? A crystal ball? I am quite puzzled by that. And Gong is a very interesting character... To say the least.
2--I think it was said earlier (in a previous episode), that there were four teachers at the school (please correct me if I am wrong). Who would they be? Are they the Men of Honor or are they different from the Men of Honor? I already know about Gong, so who would the other 3 be? YW? LSS (though he doesn't live at the school, so how would he teach there? And isn't he getting/preparing to leave, once his boats are built? If he is a teacher then, who would teach the students, once LSS leaves?) Gon? DPJ (though he seems more like the headmaster/director of the school. We have never seen him teach?)
3--SH coming back was a big reveal for me, one that I didn't expect (if that is indeed SH, and it looks like it might be, since GF's reasoning makes sense). I thought SH had died when she had been slashed, however, I have to say that the scars on her shoulders are quite damning (as an evidence). This makes me wonder if SH will be played by the same actress, or by a different one, such as to indicate that SH has had a face change, or something like that. I looked very closely, and the person/female/actress seemed to look different (her lips seemed fuller than those of Lee Yeon-Hee, who played SH in the first 2 ep.). I feel that we are teased a lot with the SH/Mystery Woman character, as this is the 3rd ep. in which she appears, and we still don't know who she is. Hopefully next week, we will find out for real.
If it is indeed SH, then I have so many more questions: a)--Who rescued her when she was slashed? And how? Because she was slashed/wounded in GW's presence, so I just assumed that he would have noticed, if someone had dragged her away (and if she wasn't dead). I guess that is one more reason to watch the drama till the end, to see the kinds of answers I will get. Other questions would be: b)--How did she get to Japan? c)--As GF mentioned, why didn't she look for KC (wasn't she curious)? d)--Will she (SH) have a face to face meeting/encounter with WR? e)--And if she did/does, how would that go? It doesn't seem like a HEA is in the cards for them, not that I was holding my breath for that. f)--Also, will SH have a face to face meeting with KC, and how would that go? (KC mentioned that he is curious about his parents, yet we know that he feels really hurt by the belief he has that they threw him away).
I would add that I was personally surprised when GF mentioned that it was SH because, well, that was a very well kept secret (I feel), so I didn't see that one coming. CJH's return was well known and publicized, and SH's return was not, which makes me go "Hum... Why keep it secret?" (besides wanting to surprise the viewers, that is).
I think those are my questions for now, I will write more (of them) if I think of any. On to my comments.
I personally like how slowly the romance is being built up between YW and KC, because I feel that it allows me to see how KC is slowly letting go of CJ (in his heart) and realizing that there is another woman (his fated love), right under his nose. I had said in a previous comment (in one of last week's recaps) that CJ was KC's 1st love, and that she had to let him go (reject him) for him to start seeing YW as a woman, and I still stand by that belief. That is how I see and understand these characters (just mho). And to me, CJ confirms that belief, as she continues to push KC away, for various reasons. I think that KC still cares about her, and that he still feels very protective of the Inn, of TS, of CJ and of the people at the Inn, however, as CJ had told him in ep. 11, KC had begun to change, and Crazyajummafan was kind enough to explain to me the ways in which KC had changed. And I do see how KC is slowly letting go of CJ in his heart.
To come back to my initial point, I appreciate seeing how slowly KC is falling in love with YW, because it is parallel (or in step) with the other changes taking place in KC's life, such his adapting to being 1/2 gumiho, 1/2 human, his learning to control his emotions (to the point where he doesn't kill people, like we saw, when he was last attacked), his learning about what human beings are made of (they can be weak, selfish and will betray you, and they can also be awesome, face their fears and act in gutsy and courageous ways, with a sense of fairness, like YW has been). KC has been learning what family is and what it means (if the people who knew you since you were born reject you, new people can adopt you), and KC has shown time and again that he is, in many ways superior to many humans in the drama: he forgave TS and confronted him (twice), taking a beating he should have given, he continues to be loyal to TS, CJ and to the Inn (and the people there) and he still wants to clear PMS' s name. He is also loyal to LSS and the people at the Martial Arts School.
As I have said, because this drama is 24 ep. long, the slow development works for me.
On a superficial note, I think WR/CJH rocks the eyeliner and the mane of glory:-). CJH looks so hot in this drama, whether he is a good mountain spirit or a demon. Whether he is wearing white, colors or black. I love his smiles (when he smiled at SH, when they were in the Moonlight Garden), and I love it when he has a smirk on his face. Every tiny gesture CHJ does with his face is soooo expressive, I think it is one of his strong points, as an actor. I am not very computer savvy (hence some of my naive and innocent questions about technical stuff), however I liked when he was in the forest (I don't remember if it was in ep. 13 or 14) and he blew out air, and we saw the skin of his neck move, like there was air in it. This is going to sound silly, but that was cool (and hot) :-) (and yes, I rewatched that scene. What can I say, I like details :-) ).
I was also struck by how young Suzy/YW looked, in the hanbok (sp?). She really looked her age (18, Western age) and could even pass for 16, especially with her hair, styled the way it is. It is a good thing LSG does look 20 (or close to it) in this drama, so he can look OK next to Suzy.
I would admit that like KC, I like YW better in her combat/teacher outfits. For some reason, I like how they look on her, the cut, the shapes, the colors, etc... I thought she looked OK in a dress, and I liked the other outfits better.
Poor Gon, finding out that he had another rival, one that he cannot compete with. I feel for him, how loyal, how protective and devoted he has been to YW (and I know, it is part of his job), but still to love someone and follow him/her like a shadow, knowing you can't be with them romantically, oof :-(
Finally, YW and KC had their date, which was sadly interrupted by CJ, and cut short when the drunk man harassed her and KC took her home. Poor YW just waited for him, like she has been doing for a while now. This is one woman who TOTALLY deserves her HEA, I tell ya... And based on slow KC has been in acknowledging his feelings for YW, I hope that when he falls for YW (which has started, I know), he will fall deep, very deep (extremely deep :-) ) and that his confession will be worthy of her wait (something amazing :-), like in TK2Hs :-) That was one great confession) .
I am glad to see TS deciding to do some good, and I hope for his sake that it will go well. This being a drama, I wouldn't be surprised if he encounters some obstacles/dangers, however I hope he will be alive until the end of the drama (and so will be his sister, and Gon).
I have to stop for now, I will be back with the rest of my thoughts later...

Part 2 of my thoughts:
1--I have only watched the episode raw (I will watch it subbed soon). When SR apologizes to Mystery Woman (after she spoke in Japanese), does that mean that SR understands (and maybe speaks) Japanese? That might come in handy for LSS (maybe), down the road (just a thought) if SR speaks and understands Japanese.
I guess like KC, we are finding out, as the drama goes on (and as we are watching it), how the bracelet works. I guess we might not have any written rules on the bracelet or the gumiho transformations for a while (how those work, what are the rules and boundaries to respect, etc...).
It was exciting to see that KC didn't transform, when YW was next to him, whether she was actually touching him or not. All she had to do was being close to him. And KC's reactions (both times), to that realization were endearing as well. We are continuing to find out the many ways in which YW is important to KC and the power of her love, maybe?
The (short) date between KC and YW, and KC's reaction to seeing YW being feminine (in her attire), makes me anticipate when he will confess to her. I just want to see how he is going to do it. And yes, they both looked adorable during that date.
I was glad and relieved to see that MBC is turning a new leaf, and found his attitude and how protective he was of KC funny and endearing. The winks however... Even I would have been uncomfortable (for KC) at seeing those (while being in front of MBC). Hopefully there will be a scene later on, when MBC helps KC out.
The marriage plot seems like another device to jolt or push KC out of being confused about his feelings for YW. Seeing YW cry in her room, I couldn't help but wonder how many more times she will be crying because of/for KC. Added to that (to jolt KC out of his confusion) is the very last scene, when YW appears to be in danger, with daddyho. Can't wait to see what will happen.
Like many, I am also liking CJ in this ep. and I look forward to seeing how her character continues to be developed. I do hope that she will be the one to deliver the final blow to GW. She is getting more of a spine (and she is becoming bolder), and I think that it would be wonderful if she could conspire with her brother to bring GW down.
I understand that YW gets concerned when it comes to KC (as soon as it seems that something could happen to him), however I agree with GF that her decision to go alone, in the woods, at night, knowing that a dangerous creature has been roaming around, killing people, was not a smart one, at all. I can also see how that would be a plot device to bring KC and his dad head to head, while (hopefully) making KC realize how much (more) he cares about YW. Still, not a very wise move, on YW's part.
It seems that KC can hear YW (and I think he can smell her as well, though I am not sure if that happens only when he turns into a gumiho), when she calls him in her head. It reminded me of the way WR could hear SW, when she was about to kill herself (the night she ran away from the gisaeng house) and the time she (SH) was being chased by DPJ's men (and WR came running, that time).
If KC and WR get into a fight, I wonder if their strengths (as gumihos) would be the same, since daddyho is 100% gumiho, and puppyho is only 1/2. I guess I will find out next week, hopefully.
And that was a really good cliffhanger, by the way.

Hello Aisling,
And thank you for responding to some of my questions: your answer to my question (a) really made sense, so thank you for sharing that answer.
Your answer to question (b) also makes sense. I guess as we continue to watch the drama, we will find out (eventually) what will happen :-)...

Hello! That was a pretty lengthy comment so I skimmed through the beginning.
1) I don't think we'll ever find out how the teacher knew KC took his bracelet off, because he does seem to be portrayed as someone with sixth sense. It's like how Master Dam knows everything, but we wouldn't be expecting any explanation.
2) I didn't catch the part abt 4 teachers but YW and Gon are definitely teachers since they've been giving classes. So the boats are really going to be built? I thought they were a decoy, on-paper plan to fool Jo Gwan-woong. However, I skip many of the JGW scenes so I guess I got the whole thing wrong.
3) Hmm I feel that the mystery woman is not much of a shocker - honestly I didn't expect her to be anyone else but SH. It's the fact that they got SH back that's pretty interesting since she was pretty much portrayed as dying in that 2nd/3rd episode. I don't think there's much to speculate about on how she got here (- rescued and brought to Japan after being slashed), although I too wonder why she didn't bother looking for KC. Perhaps she still dislikes him? I'm also wondering why she requested and was so interested to see the giksaeng house, and am puzzled as to why they've to use another actress to portray her comeback. She's 20 years older and will definitely have aged, but I don't see why they can use the same actors for Jo Gwan Woong and Soo-ryun, but not for Seo Hwa. Soo-ryun looks exactly the same as 20 years ago, too. There are no extra wrinkles or anything. I really don't get why there has to be a change of actress if the reason is age. What do you think?
Apart from Wol ryung, I actually do like Gon a lot! He's tall, pretty cute, fights well and is dependable and protective. I would love for YW to get together with him, although this will never happen in kdrama :D

Hello Chloe :-),
Thank you for your comments (and your response to some of my questions), I appreciate them. Yes, I do get long winded when I write my comments/thoughts :-). I do not leave anything out, I put it all out there, and I see what the other beanies respond to.
I have some thoughts/comments about what you wrote and asked, however, I can't answer them right now. I will be back later to answer, so please keep on checking, if you remember...

Hi Chloe, I am back!
1)--Regarding your 1st point, I think you are right, unfortunately. I hate it when dramas do things like that, not really explaining them and asking us, the viewers, to just accept them. I like to understand everything :-)...
2)--The part about the 4 teachers were mentioned in an earlier episode (ep. 9 to be exact). The 4 teachers are also mentioned in the ep. 9 recap here on DB (I just read it, to double check). So YW and Gon are teachers, the old kitchen fogey is one as well (aka Teacher Jook Dal) and I wonder who the 4th one is. DPJ strikes me more as the director of the school, and I don't know if he teaches (still), which would make him the 4th teacher, maybe.
And yes, the boats are supposed to be built, and that is based on real life events with LSS (I have seen them being referred to as ("turtle boats,") and we know that LSS was/is a real historical figure. You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Soon_Shin and about the turtle ships here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle_Ship. The designs of the ships in the drama look similar to the ones you see on Wiki.
As despicable as JGW is, you might want to consider watching his scenes, because you might be missing some important info that would help you understand the drama better. LSS asked TS to give enough real and truthful info about the ships for JGW to believe that TS was really on JGW's side, so that JGW would trust TS and TS would find out if JGW is selling secrets (including state ones) to the Japanese (or other countries) and to find out how deep (deeply involved) JGW is involved in treason or other (negative) matters. The revelation of the boats to JGW is a bait that LSS and the Men of Honor (and us the viewers) are hoping JGW will take.
3)--Regarding your 3rd point, I go into dramas pretty open minded, not knowing what to expect, so the Mystery Woman was a development of the plot I was willing to roll with, however I did not expect her to be SH. Bloggers and commenters are quite good at getting info (about dramas and their favorites celebs) and at leaking it, so (partly because SH coming back was not mentioned by anyone [that I read of]), I didn't think that we would hear/see her again, hence my surprise.
I hope they will show us what happened after SH was slashed. I am curious about that. Regarding KC, maybe because SH was considered a slave back in Joseon, she didn't think it safe for her to go back and look for KC? Also, a beanie commented below that people knowing that KC was related to SH might not have been safe for KC, and I can see why. Maybe 20 years later, SH hoped that people would have forgotten about her (and if her husband is really dead, she is free to travel and do as she wishes, kind of, methinks, or at least that is what I am assuming). I am actually glad she is back, come to think of it. One more person who hates JGW and who has some unfinished business with him. *rubbing my hands with glee*
Like you, I would like to know about SH's interest in the gisaeng house. I wonder if they used a different actress because maybe SH did something to her face (or something was done to her face by someone), and now she looks different, so JGW will not recognize her? (that's just my guess). I think using another actress has to do with more than age, there has to be more to this story (and reasoning) than age, imho. I guess we will find out next week (hopefully), because to be honest, I am not sure what that reason might be.
And I totally agree with you about this: "Soo-ryun looks exactly the same as 20 years ago, too. There are no extra wrinkles or anything." I guess SR has really good skin, and a great skin regimen? :-) (she should share it with us :-) ).
Regarding your last #, I do find Gon dependable, protective (I love protective guys, as long as they are not overbearing), tall, respectful and a good fighter. Face wise, he is not my favorite, he is OK. I do like his character and yes, he is the perfect guy in the Kdrama who will not get the girl :-(. He is everything that we, normal women would want (or at least most of us, I am assuming).
Interestingly also, CJH's pictures of a few years ago have him with fuller lips. His lips are much thinner in this episode, just something I noticed.
Thanks again for your comments Chloe :-)...

@Ivoire thanks for the links w.r.t the turtle ship! gained some knowledge there. and yes I guess I'll make myself sit through the Jo Gwan Woong scenes from now on, despite how slow-moving and repetitive they are.
I do think they would show us how Seo Hwa got to Japan, in a quick flashback narrative. i hope there's a gd explanation for the change in actress! doubt anything major is done to her face since plastic surgery isn't exactly available in those times, right? about her tattoo, i read chinese (and watch this drama subbed in chinese because it comes out an hour after the raw version is aired - amazingly fast!), so i thought i would share this quick titbit: The tattoo on seo hwa's back is actually an old version of the word 'Hwa' in chinese. i've no idea about the origin of korean words and i don't read/speak it - do you? is it also 'hwa' in korean or something?
haha yes Soo Ryun's great skin - it's in their genes, isn't it. I was pretty amazed by the good skin of many korean ahjunma's when i visited korea. most of the young girls wear makeup actually, so it's not the culprit for bad skin condition. i wish i knew their secrets!
yeah face wise, Gon wouldn't be my favorite too. but i would say this show doesn't have anyone who immediately became my eye candy. (i know many are crazy over papa jumiho... :D )

I think that Daddyho is stronger. First of all because he is 100% gumiho, and second because he is a thousand years old which will further say one thousand years of experience . Puppyho has barely 20 :D. So I think we know who is going to win if they start to fight. The best option is to neutralize the enemy, I mean to turn old daddyho back. How? I don't have idea, right now :D. I guess, they will have to kill SW :D.

Hello Bojana,
And thank you for your response. You are right, daddyho might be stronger, however, I still wonder (maybe puppyho has some tricks up his sleeves)? I would feel so bad if his dad beats him to a pulp, though I would understand how that could happen. I also agree with your reasoning, the daddy being 100% gumiho, and having 1,000 years of experience.
You said this, "Puppyho has barely 20 :-). Can I correct you and say that as far as I know, puppyho is (still) not 20 yet? We have not had any indication in the drama that he has turned 20 yet, so...
You know, to be honest, I don't know if daddyho can be turned back, at this point. I think he should have killed SH when he had the chance (when she brought DPJ and his men to the Moonlight Garden), however, SJ (the monk) said that he chose not to kill her, so I am assuming that that opportunity is not available anymore, or that it might not work if daddyho tried to kill SH at this point in the drama.
I guess as we continue to watch, we will find out what will happen to KC :-).

Hello again Chloe,
I hope you will see this response. I had hoped to post it yesterday, however the day got away from me :-(
Regarding the links about LSS, you are very welcome! I have learned so much from others on this site, so I am always happy to share some info if I can and if I know something :-)
You wrote this, "thanks for the links w.r.t the turtle ship!" What did you mean here, "w.r.t?" I didn't understand.
About the scenes with Jo Gwan Woong, I think it is a good thing you decided to watch them. You know that he is the necessary villain and he is not going anywhere. I actually give a lot of credit to the actor for portraying that character with so much conviction. He is so hated (at least from what I have seen in the online community, on the blogosphere), it is hard to deny that he is doing something right in the way he is playing his role. Really kudos to him. I read also that he was in the drama "Rascal Sons," and that his character is radically different in that drama. Apparently, he is really nice and very respectful in real life. He does not have a manager, is always on time on the set, and handles his career himself. Goes to show that quite often, the villains in dramas and films can be different in real life (and as we know, they often are). It must be quite demanding (and yet rewarding) to play a villain, so my hats off to those actors and actresses who are able to pull it off.
Chloe, you wrote this, "I do think they would show us how Seo Hwa got to Japan, in a quick flashback narrative," and I agree with you. I also think that is what the writer will do. She has been fairly good at giving us some information about what happens and how it happens, for the most part.
About the change in actress, I was thinking that maybe something happened to her face (she had an accident or something like that), and I know that there might not have been plastic surgery, but maybe there was reconstructive surgery, that would make her look different. They changed the actress, so it would have to be justified, I am assuming. I guess we will find out tomorrow.
You watch this drama an hour after it is aired? You are so blessed. AND you speak, understand and probably read Chinese, which is sooooo cool. Good for you!!!! (I do the same for French, English and Spanish).
Thank you for the tidbit. Unfortunately, I do not speak Korean, only the (very) few phrases that I have been learning by watching Kdramas and thanks to the answers I get to some of the questions I ask here. I plan on learning the language, albeit very slowly. I think you might be ahead of me as far as I am concerned (regarding the Korean Language). I am not sure what "hwa" would mean in Korean. I am sorry, I am not much of a help :-(
Great! You have been to Korea! How many times? (if I may ask). Did you like it when you went? If you don't mind my asking, where do you currently reside? (I am just curious, this is such a diverse community).
You know, about eye candy, I like papa Gumiho. He has wrinkles around his eyes, when he smiles. He just manages to convey his emotions, what he is feeling, down to the smallest details, and I love that about him. On screen, one can read him like an open book and I love that. I love that he is not too young (28 is a good age), and he has a great presence on the screen. He is not drop dead gorgeous imho, however, there is something about him. He is charismatic and he leaves an impression. And that says a lot, for a young actor. Can you tell I like him? :-) (as an actor)
I really hope you will see this message :-) Let me know if you did. How have you liked GFB, so far?

With regards to your thoughts on SH: "If it is indeed SH, then I have so many more questions: a)–Who rescued her when she was slashed? And how? Because she was slashed/wounded in GW’s presence, so I just assumed that he would have noticed, if someone had dragged her away (and if she wasn’t dead)."
I'm guessing it's the Japanese guy GW was talking to when SH came up to him with a sword. It's not surprising if she's rescued that way because we all thought Ma Bong-chul would be dead when he's slashed but he hung on until KC came and rescued him later.
"Other questions would be: b)–How did she get to Japan?"
The Japanese guy who rescued her took her there. Remember that look of awe/surprise on his face when SH came up with the sword? She must have impressed him with her determination and he decided to keep her alive. Sort of like Ueno and Rie in Gaksital. I'm guessing that the Japanese needed to off GW in the end after they are done using him. SH will come in handy for that.

I am kind of curious about that too. Since that she was disgusted when she saw WR as a beast, maybe she is going to make the same mistake twice. As I remember she was happy to see that KC was not a beast when she tried to kill him. So actually she doesn't know that he is half gumiho. I wonder how she will react when she find that out.

Bojana,
SH knows that her son is 1/2 gumiho, that was the reason why she wanted to kill him, in the first place. When she gave birth, she expected him to look like an animal and he didn't. He looked fully human, and that surprised her. If and when she sees him again, she will (already) know that KC is half human, and half gumiho (that should not surprise her).
It would still be interesting to see how she reacts, when she comes face to face with KC :-).

This makes me wonder if SH will be played by the same actress, or by a different one, such as to indicate that SH has had a face change, or something like that. I looked very closely, and the person/female/actress seemed to look different (her lips seemed fuller than those of Lee Yeon-Hee, who played SH in the first 2 ep.).

okies now that i have watched the episode, some comments:
If SH is really back...which i still have my doubts about - just her behavior alone is weird, then what the hell has she been doing for the past 20 years? why did she forget about kang-chi? is she so obsessed with her hatred for JG that she is throwing everything else to the side??? Also the actress seems very different, so if SH really is back, m gonna be pissed that they didnt bring back LYH. I just cant picture WY/CJH and anyone else that is not LYH as sun hwa! so i dont think that that's SH. maybe its her reincarnation or something....
Yo the dad is just letting his insecurities cloud his judgment. I dont understand why he thinks this will stop them - KC and YW. also wait till he finds out that daddyHo and possibly MommyHo r back...

It's not about WR having his judgement clouded or wondering how he can seek to kill his son. His behaviour is a consequence of not fulfilling the 100 days requirement to be human. And for not killing SH with the wooden knife. SJ did say that if he did not, he would turn evil for a 1000 yrs. Despite knowing the consequence, he CHOSE not to kill SH, so in some ways I hold him responsible for his current behaviour!
So I don't understand why ppl are wondering why he could want to kill KC and harm SJ. It's there in the story.

Btw, even if it's YW's dad... I don't think it's clouding his judgement. He doesn't want anything to happen to YW. KC is half a gumiho, and he's deliberately telling them about the marriage so that KC and YW won't go off and spend time together alone again. Cos anything can happen when two hot-blooded young ppl are together, and I don't think he wants a grandchild who is a quarter gumiho. More so, he doesn't want his little girl hurt. If I'm not mistaken, SJ did tell them that one of them may die.

Well in East Europe or maybe even in the rest of the Europe as well, it's quite common to say that when it comes to 1 vs 1 fight, like fight between the knights in Medieval period :D. Some people say even chest to chest (where chest has the meaning of thorax). But these expressions are quite old and were used more in the Middle Ages, now it's more often used face-to-face, I guess :-). But, People still like to use old expressions because it sounds funny :D.

I have a theory - if they're looking to absolve Daddy Gumiho, the only way that could happen (according to the monk) was if the woman who betrayed him got stabbed with the wooden dagger.
I'm thinking bringing mum back was a way of giving him a loophole and some hope - maybe Seo Hwa will have changed and matured to such an extent that she will sacrifice herself to revert him and prove her love.
Just saying.

It's past the time when they could be his parents. They created him but did abandon him in the end and his actual parents were Lord Park and the people of the Inn. Like with CJ and TS, once MS died their fate with KC changed to a different path. Once WR was killed and SH was left alone that also changed KC's path. His future includes YW and the school, not mom and dad.

Well If SH died, than WR would be normal and probably a good parent. For abandoning KC, SH is only to blame, because as I said WR would never abandon him if the circumstances were different. I agree with your point of view but I think that KC always wandered about his biological parents. Even if he was happy with Lord Park, CJ and TS, still it's not the same.

We might not like SH so much for what she did to WR. But bringing her back makes perfect sense. She needs to:
repay Evil Lord for what he did to her family;
look for the baby that she left to Monk; and
make whatever amends she can to WR.

Creepily.... his smirk at Yeo Wool reminded me of GW's lust towards Seo Hwa.... Is it the same with WR towards YW?
Since this is fantasy, perhaps YW has some magical ability to suppress the beast side of Kang Chi? And it is also their love that is binding her with Kang Chi to the point that he can smell and even hear her thoughts (a psychic link)... just like how he heard her calling his name when his beast and human forms were fighting each other in the cave.

Meddling parents are always the worst. Not sure SH needs much explanation as to why she didn't look for Kagnchi. She did already throw him away. I hope she at least knew he was happy with the Parks while she was out in Japan. Kangchi just has the worst parents.
Still I find little need for her in the story, especially since she's chilling out while her husband is about to murder their son. CJ is much more appealing and I do what her to be the one to destroy GW in the end. Speaking of him, he's so distracted by women now he's not doing much evil....
Not sure what WR wants will do with YW, but I don't think it'll be good. Same with Kangchi. Hopefully more than just kill them. I'm all for evil, but it's a bit boring if they just want to destroy everything. You need some bigger goals WR. I think even Daddy knows Kangchi loves YW. Maybe KC will figure it out next week...
Okay, and gang leader MBC rocks. Love that he turned into a Kangchi fanboy. The man might not have any scruples, but he knows when to give up.

Well, I think she left him behind thinking she was going to die after confronting GW with a weapon. Since she didn't, there must be another reason why she didn't come back to watch over KC.
I don't really want to revisit her character though since CJ has taken her path and grown to be a much more of an interesting character than she ever did. Her declaration to kill GW on her own was awesome. I guess there may be some power struggle between SW and SR with CJ in between... and I suppose SW could become a convenient plot device down the road, should they choose to wrap up WR's story nicely.

Maybe by the time she recovered it had been a while and she was already in Japan. KC was happy and taken care of and that family had more to offer him than she did. Still, it's going to be difficult for Kangchi to develop any sympathy for either one of his parents. They just aren't particularly deserving of it. GW just exploited their problems, he didn't cause them.
Yes CJ is a much better done SH so I have no need for SH in the story at all.

This is what I thought. After all, when she went to kill The Lord he was talking to a Japanese man. I believe this man took her in when everyone thought she was dead. Now that he is dead she has come back. Plus she had made a deal with the monk that her son would live as a human and have a good life at least until he was 20 years old. To me she is no different than any biological mom who gives up her child for adoption so he can have a better life. She is now back and I'm sure she'll track him down.

I'm respecting CJ so much. May not agree with all her choices, but she is one tough cookie.
It's interesting how the writer gives us two great female leads. One raised just like a typical Joseon female but has gone thru so much hardship and heartache and has to shed everything including her pride to survive. The other raised unconventionally, yet is soft and feminine on the inside. But also tough nonetheless.

“So you’re saying that a gisaeng shouldn’t live as a gisaeng, like a monster not living like a monster, pretending to be human?”

Eh, it was the truth.
The guy Kang-chi "protected" her from is still totally free to get drinks from her (and have sex with her) whenever he has the funds. Kang-chi was acting like Chung-jo hadn't been raped and forced to become a prostitute. She was and now she is. To pretend otherwise (that she's someone that can be protected from any interested man who's got the funds to buy her) is cruel.
Kang-chi, of course, has it a lot easier. Apparently he can become human. Chung-jo is always going to be a prostitute. (Per the rules of that society anyway -- if I understand it all correctly.)

Given the parallels so far, my guess is that SW will have a revenge motive, just like CJ.
Here's how they could do it: Age and experience would tell her that to destroy GW she needed to re-acquire both power and wealth. She's been circling him and drawing him in by pretending to be a foreign threat, who could serve his ambitions. She'll set him up for treason charges (just like he did to her father). Except that, this time, the treason charges would be true.
I'd like for GW to die by the hand of justice, rather than by the hand of revenge. If one of our heroines kills him in revenge, how are they any better than he is?
This drama has been so good.

I'm not really sure what people are expecting SeoHwa to do... after all, she just returned to Korea and Daddy Gu is supposed to be dead and buried 6 feet under. So why would she be actively trying to search for or 'cure' him?
And yeah, I agree with you about why SeoHwa wasn't looking for KangChi. I actually also think that the reason why she didn't bring him up herself is because she was a runaway slave and so KangChi by default would also be a slave. If caught, they would both die. Furthermore, it might have been well-known that SeoHwa's husband was a gumiho, which would cast suspicion upon KangChi's , er, identity by the townspeople and he would have been treated way worse. Coupled with the fact that she probably didn't and wouldn't know how to deal with a non-mature gumiho (y'know, KangChi's gumiho side could've acted up in the middle of the night or something. If daddy Gu were around, he could've helped. Alas, he died.), it was no wonder that she threw him away. After all, she had SoJung's promise that he would live 'like a person' (well).

As for why they didn't cast Lee YeonHee back, I have no idea. Perhaps they didn't think Lee YeonHee could pull of the gravitas required by new SeoHwa? *Shrugs* Or maybe SeoHwa was so shocked that she went for plastic surgery. Kidding.
But I seriously have no idea. I don't think any adult changes that much anyway, even in 20 years. Still, it doesn't mean that the new actress can't be playing older SeoHwa.

If we could hear more of her thoughts it would be better. Like is she actually curious about her son or not? Does she know where he is and does she even care? Why did she come back after 20 years? I don't expect her to do much for WR now since she can't know he's back and pissed off, but seeing her going to parties and taking baths while the mess she helped create is unfolding is a little off putting to watch and doesn't endear her character to me.

I don't think so really. Because people would want LYH for the reunion, not a new actress. That post the tryp translated said she and daddy were always going to return and to expect no parent romance either. I think they made it way too obviously she didn't actually die in ep. 3 for her return to be anything but planned from the beginning.
Also the synopsis has a lot of changes too. Like WR was supposed to go missing instead of dying and supposedly he come back being mind controlled and with amnesia, which he obviously doesn't have.

@lemondoodle:
Yes, now you've said that. Based on initial synopsis, Wol Ryung was supposed to side with Jo Kwan Woong and having amnesia, which we find Nope, not at all in this episode. But it may be too soon to tell. After all, he did come back to the world of the living the moment she returned home. To me that fell under the drama's rule of linked destinies that cannot be interrupted by man's interference.
The last scene left me with the impression that WR was going to use YW as bait to draw in KC. Will he use KC as bait to draw in SH?
Sure, he could just show up in their rooms in the middle of the night and accomplish his objectives. But what would be the fun in watching omnipotent and (seemingly) omnipresent evil? Well I can't agree that he has the worst parents ever. First of all it was SH fault that WR became like this. If she didn't betray him or if she stabbed the f...ing dagger in her heart herself after betrayal, he would remain good and be the kind of parent Kang-chi deserves. He would be heart-broken of course but at least he wouldn't be a thousand years demon. I don't find WR guilty, but more unlucky to meet or better to say to fall in love in wrong type of woman. It wasn't just her fault. He did marry and have sex with a girl he barely knew while lying to her about his true nature. That's not cute in the real word and it's not cute in GFB no matter how nice and handsome he is. If he were smarter and not in heat he would have waited until his 100 days were over and then married her. So, yes he's to blame as well. The only actual victim is Kangchi. Both parents made their mistakes and the one truly suffering is their child who didn't ask to be born tbh.

May 22, 2013 at 5:31 PM
Great comment. At first I totally agreed but there might be another way of looking at it.
His true identity was a benevolent one. The only time his claws came out was when he was fighting grave injustice. He wasn't a thug/monster who provoked fights.
And he was willing to give up that identity and all of its benefits. The only thing she needed to do is "see" him and stand by him. "Seeing" him meant recognizing that his true self is what's in his heart, not his physical appearance. (And don't we all want that?)
The better analogy would be a woman who married a man only to find out he was Tony Stark; a covert philanthropist and mercenary against evil in the world. Yeah, a bit of a shock to see the suit. But isn't the man inside worth it?
Required fields are marked *
lemondoodle
May 22, 2013 at 8:58 PM
It's easy for us to see he was benevolent. Probably not as easy for her. She knew he lied and she knew he viciously killed people. Then she knew she was pregnant with his child. You also have to consider the lore for gumihos in the first place as creatures who trick humans, which is where I don't think the Tony Stark analogy actually fits... :)
There is just so many simple things they both could have done to avoid their fate and the pain they ended up causing Kangchi. Even dense 20 year old Kangchi tried to tell CJ about his true nature before she saw it. WR never felt the need to be honest with her. She didn't know what he was giving up because he never bothered to tell her.
SH wasn't blames though. Going to GW and hunting down WR was completely terrible and that is the part I find to be what she needs to make amends for. Not running away from him in the first place. CJ running away from KC, but not to GW was a much more rational choice and easily forgivable because you can understand why she did (and she now regrets it).
Bojana
May 24, 2013 at 8:18 AM
Exactly!!! :-) It wasn't nice to lie but WR saved her and she kind of forgot that in blink of an eye. Even if he is a gumiho he has never been violent towards her and was eager to do anything to become human. WR mistake can't be compared with SH betrayal. At least that's my opinion. But I agree that Kang-chi is the one who suffers the most, because of the mistakes of his parents.

As I had mentioned in an earlier post, WR KNEW the consequence of not killing SH. That he would turn evil for 1000 yrs, yet he made the choice NOT to kill her. Some romantised it by saying that he loved her too much to kill her. But isn't that rather irresponsible? And in any case, wouldn't she be better off dead than in the hands of someone like GW? I think WR thinks too much with his heart and not his head. So let's not just blame SH and be swayed by a handsome devil - pun intended.

To be honest, KC's a lot like his father. In the earlier eps, we see him thinking with his heart (emotions) rather than his head. He's impulsive and often reacts first. But KC's more fortunate in that he's got the chance to learn to control that impulsiveness and think before he acts.
Bojana
May 24, 2013 at 8:30 AM
It's easy to say but in practice it's very difficult to do it. I don't think it's romantised. I personally would never be able to kill someone who I love or a dear friend for example, just because that's right thing to do. People do think with their heart instead of their head very often. When people love they also sacrifice themselves. I guess, that was his plan in that moment. If he could kill her easily that would mean there have never been love. Maybe we have different opinions about it, but anyway glad to hear your point of view as well. Maybe I am wrong or have too romantised way of thinking :-).
I don't find his devil smirk sexy or whatever, it actually freaks me out :D. Especially last scene with YW. It's creepy, really.

You're right. It is difficult to kill someone you love, and maybe romantising is not such a good word to use. But he was acting from his heart more than his head.
The point I'm trying to make is that, whether he chose to act from his heart or head, he has to be held accountable for his decision, because he did it knowing the consequences. SH is not to be completely blamed, as so many are wont to do. Someone said that WR may not have known the extent of how evil he'll become, but I kinda doubt it. Remember that he's also some divine creature, a god of the mountains and has lived for 1000 yrs. It's unlikely that he doesn't know how evil he can become.
Tks for accepting my point of view graciously. It's good to hear yours too.

I love an evil bastard with a plan and a brain. A sexy smirk doesn't hurt, either. >;) It doesn't surprise me that TS and YW would be promised to one another or that Master Dam would choose now to drop that bomb. I can't blame him for wanting to try and keep his daughter from KC. It's futile to try and stop fate; you'll have more success stopping a steamroller by standing in front of it, but I understand why Master Dam would try.

But Master Dam, or the actor who plays him, has no expression whatsoever. If you turn off the sound while he is on, you wouldn't be able to tell if he is talking abt his dead disciples in the woods, YW's marriage arranged a long time ago, or what they r going to do what Lee Soon Shin. He is obviously a veteran in the industry. He has managed to have a long career with One expression? Makes me wonder.

I think it's not the actor's fault. How actor/actress acts is often depend on how the character are written. Here in GFB, all the characters in the academy include YW/Gon/PJ are written very flat and mysterious without given much backstory comperering with KC/CJ/TS. I feel bit sorry for actors.

Nah. Jo GwanWoong has been shown to be an arse the whole time, so I doubt anyone could root for him. Actually, I think the actor playing Jo GwanWoong is kind of cute in a cute ajusshi way. Haha.
However, with Gu WolRyung, we have seen his adorable lovesick ways like bringing bags of butterflies and what not which endeared people to him. Along with the fact that this new psycho persona is probably not really him, I think people can become forgiving and end up just remembering the good stuff, leading to KYYAAAAH! DADDY HO!

Agreed @ JGW comment!
He's a great actor, that's why I am a teeny bit fond of him, though he's a complete bastard. His bastardiness in action (the way he speaks, especially) just makes it so convincing that he's an 100% arse. Awesome. But honestly, storywise, he's such a predictable 2D villian.

I'm curious what YW is gonna do abt that arranged marriage.
Plot-wise, I think TS can be killed by Evil Lord when it is found out that he is a spy. I doubt many of us would mind. That can free up YW to marry who she chooses when that doofus finds his GuFB n becomes 100% human. But I want to see YW break free of that marriage bond first.

Personally I don't think TaeSeo will die, before some effect of forced marriage takes place. Or else, why waste the effort of setting up that the girl in his heart is YW?
Also... KC needs this obstacle to make him realize his feelings. Since he's a clueless puppy. *sigh*
But after he realizes, I doubt that he would confront Master Dam / TaeSeo, if I am right that he still cares for brohood more than his own romance. He'll be just a depressed puppy instead.
Most likely it'd be YW standing up for herself, claiming KC as her love-interest, and changing her own fate. Yay for bold female leads!

I had my doubts, but I guess the mysterious lady was really Seo-hwa. I was still skeptical while watching the episode, because she sounds so different - the only real giveaways were the faded claw marks and gisaeng tattoo. I'm assuming she's portrayed by another actress and not by Lee Yeon-hee, for reasons unknown...I mean, they kept everyone else the same: Soo-ryun, Yeo-wool's father, So-jung, and obviously Wol-ryung (being an immortal demon and all). What made Seo-hwa the exception that they've cast another actress (who I'm guessing is Yoon Se-ah, according to the official drama website) to be her? It's definitely not an important issue, but it just left me wondering.

That probably makes the most sense. Although I'm inclined to believe that she was older than she was, given the time period and such, she was probably no older than 16-18 anyway. Then again, I wonder what stopped them from just applying heavier/thicker make-up to demonstrate age on the same actress instead of just replacing her. Oh well.

actually she's only 18 not 19..she was born October 10, 1994…18 in International Age System (19 in korean age), and the kissing scene is expected to happen but I think it would be better if it's just light…because Suzy is still young (just like how she do it in Dream High with Kim Soo Hyun; she's only 16 that time) right for her age...

Thanks a lot for this wonderful recap~
I laughed out loud at "Mr. I’m-So-Hungry"~ ptfff! Hahahha~!
The beginning part of the episode when KC and YW are having their date is so very CUTE~
I LOVE KC's reactions~ even though he did make my jaw drop a couple of times... haha~
And it was just so sweet of YW to wish for KC to get the Book and become human!
KC's expressions when he swirl YW around after YW asked him about his most precious person is BEAUTIFUL~ It's almost a confession (if he just did not follow that with "I'm so hungry"...hai...)
The change in MBC is too hilarious and over that I cringe so badly with KC and YW too~ "wink~ wink~" But I think MBC would definitely play a big role for KC later as things hit even lower...
Now, I officially HATE the 2 dads! YW's dad is really infuriating! How can he resort to use such a tactic to separate YW and KC!? In fact, from the very start, I feel that his character is a rather dumb one. Killing and getting rid of all the he deems harmful and dangerous to himself, his daughter and people?
Conclusion: He has heroism fetish...
And WR, how can he want to kill his own son!!?? Especially when it is one who you had not met before at all, had not care for at all and had no parents until now!!?? KC is struggling so badly and his father only want to kill him!? I HATE WR!
If he dares to hurt KC in any way, I will... @$%%#%@%$# (thinking of ways of torture)!!!

Can't imagine how much hardship KC has to face. Now his father is back and want to destroy him. I also hate him for that, even though I already know he would come back evil and fight his son before the drama was broadcast, it's even written in the synopsis, but still, it hurts me badly. Knowing KC will suffer more and more, I can't help it. Hang in there KC.

Yes, if a character has no faults - really, I can't think of a one for her - where is the character to go? In heroic literature a lot of times these characters are given a noble death, but I don't think they will do that here. If anyone sacrifices themselves, my guess is it would be one or both of the parents, to redeem themselves.

I don't think every character necessarily has to change to "go" anywhere by the end of the drama. We already know that KC has a huge literal change to face if he wants to become human, so I think it's enough that YW is simply his anchor to his human side. That's a new role that she certainly wasn't in before, even if it doesn't necessarily reflect a major change in her character itself.

I agree. YW is lovable girl, but we don't know much about her backstory yet. Like 'why she acts like a boy?''why she doesn't have mother?'. So far the writer set up all life targets for KC to be full human, CJ to become head gisaeng, TS to get back 100yr Inn, but not for YW. So actually I thought the writer will show us her backstory as a member of honer but she wasn't the one. Well, I hope the writer doesn't leave YW's character just as a nice girl who fall in love with KC.

Nah, I won't jump into conclusion that YW's character has no development thus far. Her father and Gon had been shocked with some of the decisions made to help Kang Chi - KC changed her personality somehow, making her reckless and defiant towards her dad (like how she defended Kang Chi when the dad wanted to kill him - the dad was shocked, maybe the first time she openly defied him?). It is these little things that the writer is throwing at us to hint at the character development, imho.
I also believe that whatever 'heartless' decisions her dad had made might be related to her mother (still a mystery that I hope can be broken soon enough or such a disappointment :/). I want to believe that all the dad wants to do is to protect his only daughter, Yeo Wool, and he might have brought her up as a son to protect her (my crazy theory is her mum may be Soo Ryung and if she is exposed as a girl she might be forced to become a gisaeng as well.)
To me, I have nagging doubts about YW truly being a brave gal and all because she always have Gon by her side protecting her - and he is one of the Men of Honour! Gon must have been sent by the dad to keep an eye on YW and protect her too.
Thus, I feel there is definitely room for development in YW's character starting from ep 15 that would lead to the next arc of YW-KC's ill-fated love journey... Maybe her fear towards WR might just bring back bad memories for her, baring all her weaknesses?

So sad how WR wants to kill his son, just thinking about how it they would have been if SW had made smarter decisions... we do need action and drama so this is the way to go. I don't think WR is going to do anything to YW maybe put her under some spell ( hopefully not... after tae seo's episode we had enough) or scare the crap out of her don't know. This story is getting REALLY interesting and fast! KC mom's return came by a little surprise to me because I truly thought that she was dead but maybe she and WR will find love again?? Love conquers all right? Maybe that is what will stop WR from killing KC and 'Everything'. As for CJ I honestly love her character she is amazing and I know she will get her revenge!! Can't wait for next week so much emotions and excitement really don't know how I'm going to hold it all in until Monday!

Yes, KC was a little mischievous about stopping CJ's wedding, but never actually went all that out to actually stop it. It didn't seem like he was actually going to do anything but mope about it in the end. It'll be interesting to see what he does here. YW as well. CJ was resigned to the fact that she had to do it. YW isn't going to go through with it. Sorry daddy. Not going to happen.

Since I'm probably the only person watching this who doesn't hate SW, I'm glad they brought her back. I'm curious what they do with her story.
I have never really cared for CJ, so besides feeling sorry for her situation, I'm not very invested in her character.

Wol ryung is a great come back! He is so attractive with his new make up and dark clothes! Hate the betrayal mom and love the sweetie dad. He deserves someone great.. Like Yeo Wool. It would be amazing if the writers surprised us with an epic love triangle between the father/yeo-wool/kang chi!! I mean he's a thousand years old, no one is too young nor too old for him. Was it just me or was the last scene where wol ryung holds up Yeo Wools chin exciting? Best, most epic love triangle.

It was exciting in a gee, I sure hope he doesn't grab her throat and suck out her soul kind of way – beyond that, there was no hint of romance there, unless you think that a predator toying with its prey is romantic.
If the writers were actually ridiculous enough to make a father-son love triangle with YW (yuck, I can hardly believe I'm typing this), I would drop this series in a heartbeat.

Somehow I think Yeo Wool might have some unknown magical abilities, that's how she could keep Kang Chi's beast form in check and allow him to remain human even without the bracelet?
Perhaps her soul will too strong for WR to absorb dry... reminds me of Inuyasha where in one ep Kanna could not trap Kagome's soul in the mirror because her soul was too strong.
And perhaps it is exactly this strong spirit that is intriguing WR, not because he is interested in her romantically.... I mean YW has already three guys chasing after her - need to add in one more to further complicate her love relationships?

May 22, 2013 at 2:35 PM
I also think YW might have secret magic powers - remember how she knew about and hot to fight the illusional ninjas in ep 1 or 2, and also, she isn't shocked at the gumiho transformation. There is a mysterious air about her background that makes me hope for some magic to come!
lemondoodle
May 23, 2013 at 12:09 AM
That would just make her ability to calm him lose all its meaning. Since she could basically do it with anyone because she's magic. It should be because they truly love and understand each other despite one being human and one being a beast. Something SH and WR couldn't do.
I still bet given what PJ did, contrasting it to the other father in the show... hot daddy just doesn't approve of this relationship. He showed no interest in her at all before. He was stalking Kangchi and asking about him. Nothing at all about YW to SJ. He'll only use her to get to Kangchi. I'm guessing when her hair magically fell down he figured out she was the girl Kangchi was with (seems gumihos figuring out gender...)

So there's a nagging question I have for the Korean history experts out there!
Sorry for being clueless, but does anyone know how giseangs keep themselves from becoming pregnant? Do they use any sort of birth control or natural remedies? And if by chance, they do get pregnant, what happens? Do they get kicked out, or do they just give the baby away after birth?

In the drama Hwang Jin Yi, it's mentioned that they will avoid having sex with customers during their fertile monthly cycle.
If they ever give birth, the baby girl will be a gisaeng while the boy will be a slave. Unless the father is a high ranking nobleman and willing to take the child in, which is unlikely.

A much better episode than yesterday's. Tuesday eps are really better in this drama, save for episode 1.
I still don't understand Lee Soon Shin's role in this drama. Sure, he came to KC's rescue and is a father-figure, but I feel there's already too many peeps out to get our villain GW. Probably because I'm not Korean, but I don't really see his significance to the plot besides his great name. Either that, or I feel that his motivations are just too big or are way beyond the story's scope (an imminent Japan invasion, and the ship which both don't fit in the drama).
I can not wait for the SH-WR showdown, moreso than KC meeting SH. I think it'll be makjang overload once KC finds out who SH is and vice versa.
Very surprised about WR. He has his memories and his consciousness, so the "1000-year demon" is just WR lacking empathy? I can get down with that.
Is it me or does anyone else find it hilarious that only SH aged the past 20 years and not everyone else? LOL. Hopefully they can already show her face next episode, and whatever her motivations are for coming back (I'm guessing to kill GW, but I agree in that I want CJ to kill him).
I guess the monk is gonna die considering SH and WR came back. I thought his role was going to be big in this one, all he ever did was warn everyone and get ignored by everyone. Poor monk. Or maaaayyyybe he'll live and by the end of the drama we get to see the big secret that is Monk and WR are the OTP in this drama all along (plus a subliminal message of gay rights in Korea. LOL).
KC is gonna get beaten up by WR I can see it by now. KC's revenge on GW has been officially disconnected this ep with the introduction of WR, unless GW uses that mind-control magic lamp on WR.
BTW, just as I have lost my interest on CJ when the writer decided to make her a copy-paste of SH finally in the last episodes we get to see a character of her own. Too bad YW's predicament of being married to TS doesn't even come close to what CJ has been through and that's why I didn't really feel any pity towards YW at all. She's safe inside a fortress, three young men have the hots for her, and she gets to do whatever she wants. As far as I'm concerned, she's had it easy for the past 14 episodes.
I also felt that a part of KC didn't want YW to marry TS because he knows if he kept YW by his side he can "be human" and being married to another man, YW won't be able to do that.
Required fields are marked *
Quinze
May 21, 2013 at 10:25 PM
I don't think YW has had it easy or tough. She doesn't need to apologize for living a good life. It's not like she's ungrateful or spiteful. She's got a good heart because she's lived a good life. She gives back as much as she gets. Guys loving her has nothing to do with her as person. It's their choice to shower their affection on her.
I don't think it's meant to evoke the same amount of empathy as chung jo's predicament either. It's not like they've spent several episodes on YW's betrothal.
I do feel like the Tuesday episodes are probably narratively tighter but it makes for a better draw in viewers that way so it's probably a marketing thing.
lol well the men's hair turned grey so that helps? haha, and head giseang's main occupation is to look pretty. I agree that lee soon shin doesn't entirely fit into the plot on a micro level. But at the same time, his motivation is partly to take gwan-woong out who's been hoarding all the noblemen wealth he takes on. And he sells secrets to the foreign japanese right? So in a sense there has to be a connection there.
The last point you made about KC and YW seems a little cold to me in light of how much the two have been through together disproving just that. The man took a sword and a rabid dog to the arm for her! Even before the gumiho reveal! I'm pretty sure it's not JUST about her being his bracelet.

So I said this last week...
All characters aren't written to be sympathized over. You aren't suppose to count the amount of bad/good in a person's life and say "This person has more sad things therefore they are more pitiful/The other person has a good life they have too many good things."
Yeo-Wool's character is built to move the plot and develop Kang-Chi (whether they become a couple or not). She's really not meant to be anything else until it is suggested otherwise (like in a backstory or something). Chung-Jo was made to be pitiful but she's someone to root for because you want revenge for her.
Also, I think the bracelet test was trying to reinforce the connected fates but I can understand where you got that vibe from.

Dear May I hire you as my spoke person?
Yes, I wonder about Lee Soon Shin too, I'm curious how to put him in the later story, what his role will do next? I'm developing few scenarios over my head, including wars and all..but it seem my imagination getting too far away, since this drama only has 24 episodes.
I'm LOL-ing over your mention of makjang-ness, since I just remember the scene in Kim Tak Gu, oh dear writer, please don't go over there! And yes, only SeoHwa is changing makes me rolls my eye too. But judging from the earlier episode when they show her tatoo making process, I think the writer has planned it long long time before. Maybe they change the actress because they need more capable one to play 'old seohwa'? (Honest comment)
About first two episode...I find it was great and engaging, but after knowing that was shot for two months (from CJH interview), it's somehow turn me off. @ reglest, that's how I feel too after I found out about the 2 months shooting for the first 2 episodes. It's a bad time management at the expense of what could be a better quality or more action scenes for the rest of the 22 episodes. I thought LSG mentioned that it is supposed to be an action-sageuk genre, yet the action scene is almost non-existent now.

1.) Wow, the ending was really suspenseful! But what the heck - why would Kangchi's dad want to kill him?? That's sooo messed up.
2.) How can Tae Soo be one of the 4 Men of Honor? There's nothing honorable in him. Is he there just as a substitute for his deceased father?
3.) I love how Yeo Wool just says what's in her heart so bluntly and honestly. (ex. her wish at the Lantern Festival was for KangChi to become human)
I think maybe that's why KangChi is human around her. She cares for him genuinely and so her love in a way melts away the beast side.

Lots and lots of revelations today, but judging by TS's conversation with KC in the previous episode, I think there will be a moment for TS to see how important YW is for KC and how they were meant for each other and he would then back off. KC really needs to get over CJ or at least understand how YW feels every time he ditches her for CJ.

At first I was annoyed with the younger generation mirroring the older generation, but now that the show is doing so in more subtle ways (sometimes) I'm beginning to like that aspect. Kang-Chi being able to hear Yeol-Wol's internal cries for help is exactly how Wol-Ryung fell inlove with Seo-Hwa. Those small, signficant callbacks are the ones I aappreciate.

I want a confrontation scene between WR and SW asap please writer-nim! And KC confronts them both why he was abandoned.
I welcome the idea of bethrodal this time just to make KC realize that he truly loves YW and fight for her against all odds.
Actually i am so worried right now about Gon finding YW first and WR might kill him. Oh please writer-nim, don't go that course pls pls
Thanks GF for the awesome recap as always :*

Gon is a veri veri adorable yet underrated character I would say.... saw quite a lot commenting how boring his character is (or how bad his hairstyle looks like, LMAO) but he is definitely supporting Yeo Wool all the time! He rarely went against her wishes and she is always able to persuade him to do whatever she wants to do and Gon rarely complains.
Gon's feelings for her is kinda like a mirror of Yeo Wool's feelings for Kang Chi - something like "Everything that I want to do will be what the other wishes to do" - that's the vibe I get from his character so if I am the writer, I will kill him off, making Yeo Wool vulnerable - I would rather her be a damsel of distress for a while and then becoming strong after going through the period of distress :)
YW can't be strong always.

I feel like this episode finally put everyone in their respective positions and roles. Like it's come together to that point where we know who all our players are and everyone's settled into it. I've actually enjoyed the pacing and characterization in this show so far so I'm excited to see how our good vs. evil pans out now.
We've sort of solved Kang-shi gumiho issue in that at least he knows his link to his humanity. He still needs to stop being a big dork and let her know already but all in good time I suppose.
The Seo-hwa thing confuses me too because I was under the impression she'd died. Did I miss something there or is everyone else as confused as me. I want to see how that plays out in relation to Daddy Gumiho though.
I loved Chung-jo in this episode. Both her boldness and her weaker side. I now she lashes out at Kang-chi but she's hurting too and I feel like people blaming her forget that. It's not like she doesn't realize that her actions play as much a role in where she's at. At least she's directing her anger at the right source! I just want her to really be the one that gets to stab Gwan-woong in the end. Like really. Would be so satisfying. Although I have a feeling the creep would enjoy that too.
I can't wait to see more of head giseang's backstory too :)
Also I love righteous! Tae-soo and Jealous! Gon. I could watch them be awesome all day!
