Go Soo in Empire of Gold’s first shoots

With a month and half left till the premiere of Empire of Gold, the SBS follow-up drama from The Chaser’s producers, the show’s right on schedule with filming having commenced this past week. These stills feature the show’s star, Go Soo, in his return to TV after three years away (his last being 2009-10 romance melo Will It Snow For Christmas?).
Go Soo plays a common man who builds up his so-called empire of gold from out of nothing, in stark contrast to the chaebol powers who form the rival line, led by Sohn Hyun-joo. His character is smart, passionate, cheerful and has everything—except money, and for that reason he endures contempt and humiliation. As he works tirelessly toward his ambitions of success and wealth, he encounters betrayal and exploitation, which gradually transform him into a cold-as-ice victor.
The drama spans roughly twenty years, and at its outset our hero is a poor young man who’s raising his younger sister (Yoon Seung-ah). In the scene pictured here, oppa takes his sister to the market to bring their father some clothes, then buys her lunch. Though it’s purely narrative necessity that has the actors playing far below their ages for the early scenes, they fit those ages surprisingly well, don’t they? (Go Soo is 34; Yoon Seung-ah is 29.)
I’m excited to have Go Soo back on television, where I think he has more time to endear himself to viewers than in films. He has sort of a slow burn onscreen, where he starts off a bit aloof and then grows on you with his quietly strong energy. At least that’s been my experiences with his dramas Will It Snow For Christmas? and Green Rose, both of which had me thoroughly rooting for him by drama’s end. Plus, the rest of this cast is rock-solid (in addition to the cast already mentioned, there’s Park Geun-hyung, Jang Shin-young, Ryu Seung-soo, and Lee Hyun-jin), so anticipate solid performances all around.
Empire of Gold will follow current Monday-Tuesday drama Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love and premieres on July 1.

1. The pretty
2. The acting
Melos traumatize me too, but I watched all of Will it Snow for Christmas, and really enjoyed it.

Wow! Go Soo!! One of my favourite actors! So good to know he is in a drama and on SBS cos I can watch it on tv, soon! Thanks for the news, Javabeans!
Anyhow, just thought of asking something unconnected to this post just because I really am desperate for help - may I know when you or Girlfriday can do the recaps for the Sat n Sun episodes 21 and 22 of "You are the best, Lee Soon Shin!"? I have been rewatching the episodes on dramacrazy since Sat hoping for the subs but alas no luck so far.
Sorry to bother you with this unrelated comment to this post but I am so hoping to understand what was going on! :)

Regarding YATBLSS, from what I have noticed, JB or GF posts the 1st recap on Wednesdays and the 2nd one on Thursdays. If there are some fillers in the episodes and they can post a recap of both episodes on the same day, then I have so far see them post it on Wednesday. So, two more days to go.
Also, you can check this site for subs. I think the subs might be up by Monday evening or Tuesday. So at least you have another site you could check, besides dramacrazy. Here is the link: http://www.dramaholics.com/

You are very welcome!!!!! I am glad I had some information that could help you. I have asked so many questions on this site (and I continue to ask), and there are usually one or more kind souls who take the time to not only answer, but also the time to be detailed, if it is necessary, which I always appreciate. It is only logical and understandable that I would do the same if I know or could guess the answer(s) to some questions asked.
I actually totally relate and can understand why you are burning to find out what happened (meaning what was said) in ep. 21 and 22 because I feel the same way. I watched ep. 21 raw on Saturday and I guessed a few things, however I have NO idea of what was actually said and yes, I do feel that those two episodes are crucial episodes, based on what happened in ep. 20. Dramaholics should have the subs out by the time the recap(s) is/are posted here, so I think you should continue to check there. I personally have found that the streaming quality (for me) is better on Dramaholics than it is on Dramacrazy, so I like watching dramas there, when they are not available on Viki.
Thank you also for your kind wishes and blessings (I receive them, by the way :-) ). Just so you know, you just made my day :-). I hope we will both find out soon what happened in YATBLSS, ep. 21 and 22. Have fun enjoying your dramas :-)...

Soooo good to hear from you again :-)!!! And I was really glad to have been of help. As you mentioned, that help comes from far away. I am from Cameroon (in Central Africa), however I have been living in the US for many years now. I currently reside in California, and I love the weather here. I used to live in Minnesota, where it is very cold, for a good portion of the year :-(.
It is really nice to meet you, through Dramabeans :-). Like you, I love the diversity here, and the fact that one can communicate and meet people from all over the world. And that happens because of our love and interest in Korean dramas, and Korean cinema and the Korean entertainment industry in general.
I have not watched ep. 21 and 22 of YATBLSS subbed yet, because I am still focused on writing my thoughts and comments about Gu Family Book, which I am currently watching. I would also like to catch up on "The Fugitive of Joseon aka The Mandate of Heaven." I have a lot to catch up on YATBLSS as well :-(
So far, I have only thanked the recappers on the YATBLSS recaps' threads. I have not had the time to write my thoughts about the drama in a long time. I hope that I will be able to do it again soon.
As the saying goes, " so many (good) dramas, so little time :-)"... There are only so many dramas I can watch and comment on :-(, and not enough time in the day to do it :-).

Hmmm....I have mixed feelings right now.....the cast is solid....but the premise is not interesting enough for me....

It's been said before but GS really does look like an older, more mature Nickhun. And those eyes! How can you not root for him?
The premise of the drama sounds a bit meh to me and the length of it sends goosebumps down my commitment-phobic spine. But I'm a sucker for heart-tugging romance so if the drama can juggle that amidst money hijinks then I'm in.

Yoon Seung ah is so babyfaced she could play a 12yr old and pull it off. Loved her since she played one of the best friends in Playful Kiss.

I used to hate him when I first started green rose that I dropped the series. Rewatched again after seeing him in will it snow for christmas and successfully completed green rose thw 2nd time around. Tried that korean version of the bachelor with him as the bachelor but I couldnt finish that one. I dont remember seeing him in anything else. So will it snow was his best series for me. That one was post-army.
I'm excited for this one, particularly because I'm curious whether I will still think of him as a fine actor after this. I hope its a gd drama.

OMG he broke my heart up, down and sideways in WISFC.
That was my first melo and I felt like a truck of doom dumped on me, and him and Han ye-seuol and poor SJK and everyone!
LOVED that show. LOVED his singing to his mom. I still play that (which I d/l from her, thank you!) on my ipod a couple times a week.
