Yoo Seung-ho’s last pre-army photo shoot (no really)

There’s never a real “last one” when it comes to these Last Photoshoot Before Army Duty, No Really This Time spreads, is there? Not that, yunno, noonas be complainin’ about another glimpse of Yoo Seung-ho, and rolling around in bed at that. And just when you thought you had two years of inappropriate-crush-free army duty on your slate…

The shots are from a photo book that’s being released this month, called Travel Letter — Spring Snow, And… Oh, titles full of vagueness and the ellipsis of musing. It’s Yoo Seung-ho’s first solo photo book, filled with pictures while traveling in Japan leading up to the days before his enlistment. The celebrity photo book is a pretty common thing, but the timing’s a thing of beauty — released just a month after going off to the army. These days stars are managed so well that it hardly seems like they left at all.

The 19-year old actor sneaked into basic training on March 5 without any fanfare or press, and is garnering nothing but public love for choosing active duty and going at the same age when his non-celebrity peers would serve. With a full resume and army duty in his rearview mirror and the rest of his twenties to be filled with leading man roles once he’s out, it’s a win-win. Now if only they made a pill for making the wait go by faster, I’m sure Dramabeans readers would buy out the whole supply. Though photoshoots in bed do help to dull the pain.

The photo book will be released April 15. Yoo Seung-ho will be released 2015.

I've read somewhere that the army and the distance from his parents really got him. On the other hand the political and global situation doesn't sound pink to anyone. Every Korean mom with a kid in the army feels it.

Noona loves the sight of YSH, but oh boy we really want to see him acting AFTER the army.

Yeah.. my heart goes out to all those soldiers (not just the celebrities) and their family. To send your child off for 2 years is one thing, but to send them off when the tension is high... it must be unbearable.

Since I don't live in Korea, I only get a glimpse of the military life through the actors and singers, who usually enlist when they are older. Seeing baby Yoo Seung Ho reminds me that the majority of the guys in the army are still college age kids, and it make me sad :(

Someone I know posted an April's Fools joke about NKorea attacking SKorea on FB.

I really didn't think it was funny at all. Actually really annoyed me, precisely because it could very well be true with the current situation.

I like the bike photos best. They are sort of sweet and the kind you'd share with friends about a fun day you had somewhere.

Yoo Seung Ho set new examples when he entered the military service.

He declined the obligatory fan send-off in consideration for his fellow, non-celebrity enlistees. (Of all madhouse sendoffs, the photo of Gong Yoo sendoff comes to mind.)

He also declined to serve in the unit reserved for entertainers. (Where Gong Yoo was said to watch Coffee Prince over and over again during the entire time there, though I don't mean to pick on Gong Yoo).

By the way, Yoo Seung Ho is 21 years old, not 19.

Yoo Seung Ho was born in 1993, which would make him 19. He's 21 in korean age though. :)

It's like how we don't count a year until we've lived a year...they count it right away, so you're a year older in Korea.

That's how I've seen it explained. He's 20 in Korean age, lol, not 21 yet.

0

Korean age: you're 1 year old when you're born, and you gain an additional year every New Year's Day after that.

If Yoo Seungho was born in 93, he was 1 at birth and then gained a year Jan 1, 1994, Jan 1, 1995, etc.

In Korean age, he is 21.

0

thats how it is in my country Bhutan too. your age is counted from the time its known that you have been conceived, so by the time you are born you are already a year old! But most of us literate, we prefer western "ageing style"...hehehe

0

It is easy to understand: You can the time you are a fetus. Same as Chinese age.

0

Yeah, it's confusing, especially for those who aren't accustomed to the way in which Koreans calculate their age.

Bernie explained it correctly. And so yes, YSH is 21 in Korea, not 19 and not 20. 21.

0

Hello,

I hope someone will see my post. I am trying to understand how age is calculated/seen in Korea. According to what bernie said, YSH would be/should be older than 21 if every New Year’s Day (since 1994), he gained a year. I don't understand and it does not make sense to me. Can someone please shed some light on this?
2--I have usually added a year to the age of Korean celebrities when I check their age, however if at 19 (Western age), YSH is actually 21 in Korea, does that mean the rest of them are actually 2 years older (compared to their Western age) instead of just one year older?
3--The third thing I don't understand then, is that my understanding of the Korean military service is that the men have to have enlisted by the time they are 29-30 (Korean age). Am I wrong in assuming so? If we automatically add 2 years to their Western age, that means that Hyun Bin enlisted at the age of 30 (in Korea) and not at the age of 29 (in Korea) as I had assumed. Was I wrong again?
To anyone who would answer my questions, thank you!

0

@Iviore

Yoo Seungho's currently 19 (international age). He'll turn 20 on August 17. In Korean age terms, they add the extra 1 year to whatever age you turn that year, regardless of when the actual birthday is. So 20 + 1 = 21, his Korean age.

Hyun Bin enlisted when he was 28 turning 29 (international age), meaning he was already 30 in Korean age and in the absolute deadline for enlisting.

0

Speaking of Hyun Bin, this showed up on my Facebook thread and then disappeared without rhyme or reason.

Hyun Bin overdose of cute.

0

Hello Yumi, and thank you sooooooo much for sharing that :-)!!!!!! Yes, HB overdose of cute, and I am not complaining :-)... Thank you again!!!!

0

@ Maldita, thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I understand now, and now it makes sense to me. Thank you again...

0

It's known as East Asian age reckoning:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_age_reckoning

@bernie

If Yoo Seungho was born in 93, he was 1 at birth and then gained a year Jan 1, 1994, Jan 1, 1995, etc.

Isn't it technically supposed to increase on the first day of the lunar year calendar? That's also what the Lunar New Year is such a big event as well.

On a more serious note, could someone explain what exactly comes under serving army duty? With the situation tensing up with North Korea's constant threats, would this put him, and anyone else serving for that matter, under direct danger?

Please, please, please North Korea, don't go loco on everyone. If superficial reasons mattered at all, there's just too many attractive men (Lee Min-ho, Kim Bum,all the Exo boys, etc.) in South Korea for the state to come in danger...

The best answer to that question is to note that the entire city of Seoul and a sizable share of the non-military population of South Korea is within North Korean artillery range; that the entire country is within range of those old Soviet bombardment rockets the North Koreans use; and that any intermediate range ballistic rockets the North Koreans have can reach most of Japan.

Along with that, we don't know one way or another whether the North has working gas and biological warheads.

So, whether this young man is in the military or not, if someone crazy or stupid punches a button on either side of the border, everyone is in the line of fire.

That includes a hundred thousand or so American military personnel and civilian contractors. One of their functions as a "tripwire" is that they will be drawing North Korean fire that might otherwise be directed at civilian targets or key points in the South Korean defenses. Consequently, there are a lot of Americans watching these perennial crises worried about family and friends.

Thank you Quiet Thought, for explaining.
So by this, "One of their functions as a “tripwire” is that they will be drawing North Korean fire that might otherwise be directed at civilian targets or key points in the South Korean defenses," do you mean that the American soldiers based in SK would purposely attract the attention of the NK? Attention that would have gone to more civilian and SK defenses, military wise?

I mention it mainly as an ironic side-effect of the fifty year-old stand-off in Korea. The Americans and a handful of United Nations observers were kept in place between Seoul and the DMZ back in the fifties to make it an absolute certainty that they would be in the line of fire if the North made another attempt to overrun the South. However, even as the American presence in Korea has shrunk over the last few decades to a token force--the key to the American military strategy in east Asia, be it for good or evil, is the naval and air bases on a few Pacific Islands--they have remained a focus of North Korean propaganda and hatred.

No one fifty years ago expected it would last this long. Your average American, if he or she is reminded that we still have a battalion or two of soldiers in South Korea, has, tends to be surprised that we're still there. But, a promise was made, and the governments involved have kept to it. Events have their own momentum, and the whole thing carries that strange feel of destiny in the back half of a Saguek.

It would have to be someone insane, unfortunately it seems NK has one insane guy in power just like before him. My hubby is in the military here in the states, SK says they are use to this from NK but here in the states it is serious talk. IDK if mine will be thrown over there if NK acts up, but I don't like the thought of it one bit.

NK needs to look back at the Korean war for reference, it wasn't pretty and most of the country was won by the south (and allies), they just got it back in the end for the peace treaty. IDK why the retread is going on....heck from outside looking in they (NK) have a scary military presence, but I can't see a 'war' going well for them. Nobody wants a full on attack except it seems this new NK leader...douche.

The normal schtick has been to saber rattle to stir up international "concern", then demand money from the US in exchange for lessening their aggressive posturing aka "returning to nonproliferation talks". So the shorthand is: saber rattling = 'give us some money'.

The only mild concern with the current situation is that the current Leader Kim is understandably less experienced in playing this game. He's taken positions that are more difficult to walk back from and still save face. However, as of today, he appears to have found a way.

Today he released information that said he had adopted a new internal "law" whereby North Korea's military won't be used to initiate military aggression. However, the new law is based on the condition that foreign so-called "aggressors" FIRST take measures to reduce tension. And usually money is what reduces tensions.

From a broader perspective, I think the timing of all of this has more to do with what's unfolding with North Korea's (direct and indirect) allies in the middle east, than anything else. I see it as a well orchestrated global chess game. Brings to mind that old quote: "may you live in interesting times."

Moderators, hope this doesn't come across as too political. It's not intended to. I'm old enough to have seen a few of these cycles, and that they always end in one predictable way. That said, I understand if the post's deleted.

I am so worried about these babies in the Korean Military, and for that matter for the whole country of South Korea.

Before I was a fan of Kdramas I would have thought that such threats were distant and unrelated to me. I know, shallow, and lacking in compassion; I am not proud of this just honest.

But now, because of the dramas, I have come to know and love the culture and the people of South Korea. I am invested in these people; what happens to them is real and personal to me. I am praying for peace on the peninsula and safety for the people of South Korea.

It's a very smart move. He's had a GREAT career so far, and his talent/age combo puts him in an awkward position right now: the roles he should be playing, he's really too young for.

He'll go now, with a strong fan base who will wait for him, and when he returns he will have aged into more appropriate roles. He'll then have - barring unforeseen events - the majority of his 20s and 30s to build a strong, character-driven career with no interruptions.

Additionally, his peers will go off to do their service much later, leaving him with the pick of the lot for the 2-3 years worth of projects that will come during that time period.

And finally, with the backlash against celebrities in the service and their special rules, him opting to go at the 'right' age AND serve in the regular armed forces will win him points with the Korean audience - whether it's a calculated move or not, he's committing himself body and soul and you have to give him credit for it.

Everybody but me raised my hand and when asked my age I told her I was 12 but I was also born in 1988. Then she demonstrated by subtracting on the board to show me that I was 11. From then on I learned to accept my western age! Actually my new theory is I am the same age until the end of the year, regardless of the fact that my birthday is in the summer :)

For the NoonaPerv to be fully operational, the perver has to be significantly older than the pervee. It's way more about reliving your youth, or re-imagining your youth, than it is about anything else.

I can only REALLY speak for myself, but I'm guessing that my lusty sisters would rather cut off their arm than actually touch/harm/take advantage of someone so young, innocent or not. It's certainly true for me. I talk a good game, that's all. And thank GOD I haven't run across a friend or classmate of my daughter's, EVER, who would inspire these thoughts in me.

He is abso-freakin'-lutely adorable. I mean I honestly want to pinch his little cheeks (the upstairs ones), as he is actually 3 years younger than my 22 yr. old (by western reckoning) son. I look forward to seeing his work post-army, given that I gave up on watching Operation Proposal about half way through. If I heard his character cry, "Renovatio, Renovatio, Renovatio!" one more time just before going back in time to behave stupidly once again, I was going to pull my hair out.

Now Hyun Bin makes me fan girl flail at the very thought of him. OMG, what a specimen of male pulchritude. My 26 yr old daughter laughs every time I start. My husband---not so much. But, truth be told, I'm one of those noonas who really just has a deep appreciation for superior aesthetics of every sort. I've yet to entertain even one sexual fantasy involving Hyun Bin. But, objectively speaking, he is major eye candy. And I've been a candy addict my entire life. LOL.

Nobody wants their children in a war path, but N Korea does a lot of blustering so they will look tough to China. The soldiers on the islands will probably see more skirmishes then anyone on the mainland.

As for these pictures. What is it about asian young men being adorable in fluffy bed covers? I"m almost 40 and I feel naughty ogling these things. I have children the same age. lol

On the age thing, we have a Korean foreign exchange student living with us right now. She finally explained it in a way I can understand. Koreans count every year that you have existed in. So, let's say you're born on December 31st. You are one year old because you lived during that year. The very next month starts a new year, so you are suddenly two years old. Everybody turns a year older on the first day of the new year, no matter what month you are born in. So, on your birthday you just celebrate your birthday, not turning a year older, since everyone turned a year older at the same time.

The strange thing is that someone who was born at the beginning of a year is the same age as someone born at the end, even though they are almost 12 months apart. But someone born in January would be considered a year younger than someone born just a month before.

I would like to see him with yoon eun hye in a big screen or in an advert of any product since it will be impossible for them to be together again in a small screen so soon. Fighting yoo seung ho!
