The flower boys join tvN’s Dating Agency: Cyrano
by javabeans
Casting news is rolling in for tvN’s new romantic comedy series Dating Agency: Cyrano, which is based on the film starring Uhm Tae-woong as the matchmaker-turned-romantic-target and which has inexplicably shuffled around the words in its title but made no more sense of them. Is this their one concession toward reminding us that it’s the same story, but different?
The show has already cast Lee Jong-hyuk in the lead role (in the character Uhm played), while Girls Generation idol Sooyoung is in the Park Shin-hye role as one of the dating agency’s employees. Lee Chun-hee was also part of the last round of casting, playing a character new to the storyline.
Joining them are two adorable boys here to fulfill our Flower Boy quotient (it IS tvN): Hong Jong-hyun, my favoritest nerdy Vampire Idol (also of Jeon Woo-chi and White Christmas), and rookie actor Jo Yoon-woo, who was hilarious and sweet as the maternal flower boy Hyun-woo from the Ramyun Shop edition. I absolutely loved his character there, totally unruffled as he knitted his buddies scarves and cooked for them.
Hong Jong-hyun’s character is recruited into the dating agency because of his (wait for it) genius engineering skills. But don’t groan just yet, because this boy makes genius hilarious. It’s why his uber-nerd scientist vampire character was so droll with his deadpan delivery, and why I then always saw him as the alien vamp even in sageuk as he played the principled officer in Jeon Woo-chi. He’ll be the brains behind all hi-tech gadgets used by the agency (which they need when they’re out in the field orchestrating scenarios to help the lovelorn client best impress their romantic interest). So he’s the Marshall.
Jo Yoon-woo plays a 19-year-old high schooler (he’s 21 in real life) who dreams of becoming a theater actor. Acting skills makes him a natural choice for the agency, since their elaborate scenarios often depend on pre-planned theatrics.
The drama is part of the Oh Boy project that brought us the earlier Flower Boy series, and will follow tvN’s current Monday-Tuesday drama Nine. It premieres in May.

I must agree: The premise is interesting but there is a lot of work to do to put meat on those bones. It's a 16 eps serie, so yeah...

i liked the movie. it was a bit slow at times, but overall it had some funny moments that i enjoyed. i really like park shin hye in it b/c she didn't play one of her usual characters and she had some superb moments when you could see how great of an actress she is (and can still become). uhm tae woong was pretty good as well (as he always is). i also liked what they did with the ending--the guy got the girl but it wasn't the typical rom-com-esque where boy-gets-girl-boy-loses-girl-boy-makes-grand-confession-and-girl-falls-into-his-arms.
i think the movie is worth watching! even if you only watch it to have context to go into the upcoming drama which i am quite kinda excited about! my only hesitation in being fully on excited for cyrano is that nine will have to end for it to begin and i am loving nine right now. episode 9 totally had me on my toes until the last minute . . . eek!

I also like the movie which makes me wary of it being expanded into a 16 episode or so drama. I really liked Love Me Not but couldn't finish its drama counterpart That Winter, The Wind Blows. Fingers crossed that Dating Agency: Cyrano does a better job.

I feel like it will, because some of my favourite parts were when they were helping that one sad guy get set up, and all the lengths they go to in order to do so. That said, I also felt kind of conflicted about how they were decieving all those girls into thinking they were dating someone they weren't: that can never end well, right? I think they addressed that in the film, but not quite enough to my liking. I hope that with more time in the drama, the whole ethical question of the set up can be explored more.
With more characters and individuals in the mix, the manipulation has to be more complex and run into more problems. I hope.

Cannot wait for this! Love Lee Jong-hyuk! And Hong Jong-hyun was amazing in Jeon Woo-chi and White Christmas. I'm a fan of Girl's Generation, but I wonder if Sooyoung will be able to act. And of course Jo Yoon-woo was adorable in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop.

By all accounts Sooyoung is the best actress in SNSD....which is not perhaps a high bar, but it does give me hope.
I love all the White Christmas boys, I came late to that party but now I feel a little vicariously thrilled each time one of them gets work.

Sooyoung's the best actress by far in SNSD. She'll do just fine in her role. :) She was surprisingly impressive when she did The 3rd Hospital last year.

Will this be my 8th tvN drama? HEH am still pretty half-baked about whether I should watch but I guess I'll most probably watch it to see Lee Chun Hee and Lee Jong Hyuk HEH.
I think there's also some residual love from variety shows like Family Outing and Dad Where Are You Going that's making me wanna watch more of 'em. :3

Oooh, this summer sounds awesome: Shark and this.
I never understood why Hong Jong-hyun's vampire alter ego resisted Minah for so long. What was that about?

Lee Jonghyuk took a risky move by accepting the role of a SNSD's love interest!
Imagine the fans would react.... Sooyoung with an ajusshi!! :))
Anyway, this sounds more interesting than the movie - I liked the casts but the story was boring - so will wait and see~

Have never watched Soo Young act before, but besides her, I kinda think the casting was perfect. Hope everything comes together nicely and we get something that is moving yet funny like Flower Boy Next Door and the previous editions.

I find her to be the one of the better idol actresses. You should check her out in the Third Hospital (I didn't really like the main otp, but she and Oh Ji-ho kept me invested). :)

If this is episodic in the sense that every week begins and concludes a mini dating-story arc while also moving forward an over-arching plot involving the employees lives, this could be awesome fun. Imagine the GUEST SPOT possibilities with this! Who would say no to a week's work on something quick and fun?

I agree, it's not like they were hooking up just one couple in the movie, so that would be a smart idea.

hong jong-hyun!!!!! i agree, he made an awesome hot nerdy vamp. the other two (lee soo-hyuk and kim woo-bin) were lovable too, but it was hong who cracked me up on a consistent basis. what made it even more hilarious was that it was quite obvious that he was longing to laugh too, because he couldn't quite control those grins. LOL. man i miss that show (and am still furious over how they ended it so suddenly, without a proper send off). shin dong-yub on incarnation reminds me of the show too.

By the way, was Vampire Idol ever fully subbed (in English)?

No, it stopped after ep 7 or 8. Really annoying. You can see how hilarious it is but no one's subbed it further.

Thanks for the information. It's a shame about the lack of subs. I love the cast and the premise sounds hilarious, but I don't know if I could watch the whole thing raw. My Korean is only beginner's level, so I'd understand bits and pieces and then be dying of curiosity about the stretches in between.

cyrano depressed me as a whole, the ending leaving much to be desired. it's interesting to see how they're gonna squeeze out a whole series from the concept though, since i thought even the movie was a bit draggy.

I watched Cyrano, thought is just okay-ish and a bit slow. The writers would need a lot of material to expand the plot for 16 episodes.
I am a super bias towards White Christmas's alum so I'll still check this one out. Please be good for Hong Jong Hyun's sake (+for my bias heart).
p/s: Just thinking out loud, not hating - why can't kdrama adopt Jdorama 10 episodes or less format though.Filler episode(s) always annoy me.

Park Shin Hye was amazing in the movie, and she showed a wide range of acting skill there. I actually realized that she is a highly capable actress through that movie. I found the movie accidentally on a cross continental flight, btw. And now SNSD Soo Young will play the similar character, which has a bit of angst, versatility, a bit of scheme and mind trick. Not anything against Soo Young, though, but I really hope she has the "It" factor that Park Shin Hye has.
I do agree with another commenter saying that the movie was slow and a bit hard to extend into a serial. But it is actually interesting seeing the agency 'tricking' couples to get together. More like a crime investigation drama or medical which has more than 1 background story. I will wait for this one!
