Second teaser and character posters for Mandate of Heaven
by girlfriday
Here’s another peek at KBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday show to follow IRIS 2, the fugitive sageuk thriller Mandate of Heaven starring Lee Dong-wook and Song Ji-hyo. It’s now carrying the full title Mandate of Heaven: Story of a Runaway, Joseon Edition, which seems unnecessarily descriptive. Maybe someone finally figured out that their title chun-myung [“thousand people” in Hangul] is un-googleable?
The character posters aren’t terribly interesting (they look more like costume test shots than anything) but the teasers and stills continue to look promising. It’s definitely playing up a very Chuno-esque feel with the chase-chase-chase, but already this story has more heart at the outset with a daddy-daughter relationship at the core.
Lee Dong-wook stars as a royal court physician and single father to Kim Yu-bin, who suffers from the same illness that killed her mother. He has no interest in politics or moving up the ranks, and spends all his time trying to discover a cure for his sick child. But one day he’s framed for an assassination attempt on the king, and ends up on the run.
Song Ji-hyo is a no-nonsense medical assistant who doesn’t take crap from anyone, whose father also went down for a crime he never committed. She’s cold and prickly, which is an awesome reversal (and perfectly suited to her kickass variety personality), while our hero is the sweet fool for his daughter who lets people underestimate him. I’m guessing that changes pretty quickly when he’s being chased to within an inch of his life.
Yoon Jin-yi (A Gentleman’s Dignity) plays a bandit’s daughter who helps the hero when he’s on the run, and Song Jong-ho (Answer Me 1997) is the officer chasing him. I’m looking forward to the relationship between the chaser and the chased, because the setup seems rife for potential reversals down the line.
Im Seul-ong and Park Ji-young play the crown prince and queen whose power struggle is the impetus for this one man’s life getting turned completely upside-down. He’ll set out to clear his name, save his daughter, and possibly save the day, starting April 24 on KBS.

The tragic life of an adorable young female bandit, half-Korean, half Dutch, all woman, wild and untamed but thoroughly ageyo and definitely chaste, as good with a knife as she is with her lip gloss. Hair by Clairol and immaculate rags by her high school drama department's sewing committee, left over from last season's production of Peter Pan.

Why is the bandit's daughter's hair brown?
She was raised by wolves after her bandit father met his untimely demise in the deep dark forest after being set upon by a pack of hungry wolves. They spared the toddler, who had toddled after her bandit father (unbeknownst to him) on her short but extremely strong legs, out of admiration for her feisty cheerful disposition (as opposed to the OTHER cold stone-faced baby heroine growing up in an upper-crust family on the other side of the deep dark forest). Growing up, she disliked her dark human hair, and yearned for the dry, bristley wolfish hair of her wolf family. Being smart and resourceful in addition to being feisty and cheerful, she decided to create her own natural dye - a mixture of river mud, pounded dead leaves and wild mushrooms. The result was a brown, sun-kissed natural hair look.
I hope this answers your question.

The little girl is too freaking cute. I have to watch it solely for daddy/daughter time. Yoon Jin-yi's hair though....why? how? Still this looks very promising, especially on W/T which is a hot mess right now.

The trailer really reminds me of Chuno. I hope Song Jong-ho's role in this drama is not too similar to his role in The Princess's Man.
Yoon Jin Yi's hair is light brown in this???

Who knows, maybe the brown is supposed to be a stand-in for dirt. I just hope there is no crying from her, not once (do you hear me, show?) I wanted to slap her so many times in AGD.
The hairstyle that I think is really cool is the Queen's - it looks like she has a thunderstorm brewing around her head.

Yeah, she rolls her head around in dirt every morning when she wakes up for oh, 10 minutes straight. It can get very depressing at times being a bandit's daughter and the head-rolling thing really works wonders as it makes her feel light-headed and clears her head of negative thoughts. She just looks for dirt and it's really easy cos it's everywhere.

천명 (Ch'on My'ong/ Cheon Myeong) in this case is not "thousand people". It is literally the "Mandate of Heave" or "Will of the Heaven" in Chinese character "天命". It is a very well known Eastern concept where the authority of the ruler to govern is bestowed upon the ruler by the heaven (the penultimate being). And since that authority comes from the heaven, it could be taken away as well. Theoretically, if a ruler misgoverns, it is the duty of the righteous to overthrow the ruler. In reality, it was used to justify coup, revolt, and replacement of the ruling dynasty with a new.

I'm sure girlfriday knows that. Her point is that the title is exactly the same as "thousand people" in hangul, therefore making it difficult for search engines to find.

I am officially looking forward to this. I think the political backdrop of the story is as gripping though in synopsis it wasn't given that much emphasis yet. Is the queen also the same conniving queen in The Concubine (movie)? She's hella effective as an evil queen. Look at those eyes. Intense!
I hope that this pulls some real emotional strings just like how The Princess' Man did to me. Because based on the teaser trailers being released so far, both give off the same kind of vibe and emotional intensity as to that of TPM. Though of course this is not a romantic segeuk and I guess it will also serve as its edge as the other segeuks being aired right now are pretty heavy on the romance side.

No.
Whereas "The Concubine" was set in the early Joseon Dynasty", "Mandate of Heaven" is set sometime in the 1st quarter of the 16th century (1500's).
The "Queen" is Queen Munjeong (Jungjong's 3rd wife); who looks weird for a Queen (more like a gisaeng due to the unsightly, other-worldly, out-of-time period and VERY HEAVY gache IMO), though I remember her in "The Land" as Im's mother more...XP
The "Crown Prince" OngOng Seulong plays is the wonja-turned Crown Prince (later Injong, Joseon's 12th King), the only son of Jungjong's 2nd wife Queen Janggyeong (BTW Queen Munjeong's relative since they're in the same clan of Papyeong Yoon) who died in the childbirth of the Crown Prince. There were rumours that Queen Janggyeong was gradually and slowly poisoned, which lead to her death in childbirth, but then again that's just one thing I picked up from "Women of the World" (waaaaaaaaaaay back 2001...Jeon In-hwa makes a badass Queen Munjeong BTW...)
I just have a feeling Jang-geum (sh/)would be mentioned (since we have "Meong" Ji-hyo and all), yet I dunno; I just mentioned since historically Jang-geum was already an uinyeo (female physician) by the time of Queen Janggyeong's death in childbirth (of Injong). And Jang-geum's debut entry in the Official Chronicles (1515: 21 March in the lunisolar calendar, 04 April in the old Julian calendar) state that the Council of Ministers punish the medical team in attendance for letting the Queen die (19 days ago), for which Jungjong refuses.
And I have a feeling later on the storyline (if they get ahead past Jungjong's death) would pick up somewhere between the lines of ep.4 of "Hometown of Legends" (linky: http://www.dramabeans.com/2008/08/hometown-of-legends-episode-4/) without the horror and bloodbath parts; where unofficial chronicles state that Queen Munjeong poisoned her stepson Injong (when he's already King)'s snack of rice cake, and Injong, knowingly, eats it in obedience, and is the cause of his early death in just 9 months of rule.

Hmmm . . . the only noticable difference I can see in Song Ji Hyo is that she has a costume that covers her forehead. Face looks pretty much the same as in her recent movie, in Running Man, and in her last two Sagueks. Are you looking at the right character shots?

idk why but this has a lot of princess' man feel in it. i'm just hoping that it's going to be as princess' man was. maybe it's the reunion of song jong ho and kim yu bin. this is so promising that i'm going to make sure to watch it once it's ended. ongoing dramas tend to ruin my work and stuff.
