Park Shin-hye cast opposite Lee Min-ho in Heirs
by girlfriday
Drumroll please… We have Lee Min-ho’s leading lady for his new drama He Who Wishes To Wear the Crown, Endure Its Weight: Heirs, aka The More Words We Put in A Title It Makes It Better, See: Hamster! Or yunno, just Heirs. Park Shin-hye has been cast as the heroine, fresh off the set of one drama (Flower Boy Next Door), a movie (The Gift of Room 7), and a short. Does the girl not rest?
The new 20-episode buzz project comes from star writer Kim Eun-sook, who most recently wrote A Gentleman’s Dignity and Secret Garden. She’s as polarizing as she is talented — those of you who watched some of her dramas along with us can attest that you rarely come out of the experience with all your hairs intact. But she does know how to make a hit drama. Directing is Kang Shin-hyo (Tazza, Midas) and the show has been picked up for a fall broadcast.
There’s no story info yet, but I don’t expect this drama to flout expectation. The title’s got chaebol-heir-and-Candy written all over it. I’m excited about the pairing though, which you have to admit is pretty damn perfect. It almost doesn’t matter what the story is. Almost.
Park Shin-hye’s been having a stellar year so far, and though Flower Boy Next Door wasn’t without its failings, she was quirky and winning as Go Dok-mi, and it was her performance that grounded the emotion and heart of the show. Please, please let’s give her a character with some depth, and not just pour all our energies into the hero, eh?
Heirs plans to premiere in October on SBS.

As much as I like the actors, I just don't see how Lee Min Ho can pull of being a high schooler again. He already looked too old during Boys Over Flower. After seemingly moving on to adult roles, seeing him go back to high school just seems like a poor choice.
Hopefully, the writer changes the script to make it at least university.

They are but they seem to have what it takes to learn to be better. They can not be blamed for getting the attention they have, even if it 50% based on looks 25% on shown talent and 25% on promise. Though Park Shin-hye has been around for longer than most know and can not hide between a newbie tag as much as Lee Min-ho can, her trouble is she pretty much type cast into as girlfriday says candy girl type roles. Again that not her fault you take what work you are offered and even candy girl roles are only the same at the basic level anyway, so a skilled actress can make such role their own

Agreed that her role in You're Beautiful and Heartstrings sucked, and from what I've heard about this role it seems to be along a similar vein. However, her acting (albeit short) in the movie Gift of Room 7 and Flower Boy Next Door were not of the Candy Girl variety.
I'm hoping this drama just won't be so damn cliche ridden that it'll be a huge disappointment. Doubtful, but still hoping.

I agree,,,as much as i like her now, I hated her in both you're beautiful and heartstrings...and started to like her in flower boys recently...as for LMH, i only started liking him after CH, so it's not all about looks for me...but I'm more forgiving here than when they cast IDOLs for the sake of IDOLS...these two are actual actors...and I hope LMH will get her french kissing soon...

Couldn't agree more. Lee Minho does well if he has a strong supporting cast and good script, but he cannot carry a drama on his own. I like Park Shin Hye, she seems sweet, but I am not a big fan of her acting. She is 23, but acts 15. She is type cast like GF said as a candy.
Her kiss scenes make one cringe. I am not asking for a full blown make out, tongue kiss, but can she at least hug back, instead of open eyed shock, hands on her side, like she is being forced scenes we get from her. I get she is trying to protect her image, but come on, it's weird and it totally breaks the scene.

The problem with seeing complaints about her on screen kisses is that i've seen her kiss well in that Etude House lipstick commercial with Jang Keun Suk (before You're Beautiful filming?) and she was much better than the awkward kisses she displays in dramas - this both confuses me and makes me wonder if its not her but the directors that make her do that, because i really don't understand it otherwise.
kahoni
April 5, 2013 at 11:41 PM
Those stupid wide eye shocked kisses are most likely under the guidance of the directors.
As Sponge said, she's done better kissing despite the super dizzying the swirling camera. I think the kissing does need work, but a lot of Korean kissing in dramas is super awkward.

Park Shin Hye is a clean Actress, whats wrong with it?
She is the most talented actress ever and doesnt look like the other actress who needs to be exposed for winning some useless awards. She wins without overacting in scenes such as kissing.

April 10, 2013 at 2:30 PM
I totally agree with you. Every time I watch Park Shin Hye's dramas, exactly when it gets to the kissing scene, I'm like O_O SERIOUSLY...
As an actress or actor not only you have to make the logical and social parts of life look real but also the romantic parts of a script have to be played truly so that the viewers can believe the whole story and the lovers relationship. I'm not sure exactly but after watching several Korean dramas I think in Korea they like to watch a girl in a drama being completely innocent, like not knowing how to kiss or always having their first kiss with the guy, or maybe sometimes being shocked when the guy kisses them (eyes wide open). I think it's nice too but you know not every time in every drama.

It does seem perfect, but for some reason so called perfect leads never end up meeting expectations for me. Seems like it should be a huge hit either way. I seriously hope she's not wasted in this drama like nearly every other female lead has been in Kim Eun-sook's work.

Agreed her dramas usually make the female lead feel like a secondary character that just compliments the male lead. Park Shin-hye can hold her own weight as we've seen with her past work and it would be such a waste if she's used similarly.
Despite more eye-candy of Lee Minho, hope PSH gets a big piece of the pie too

They are both A-list in terms of popularity, so I guess the show will be popular but so far the storyline doesn't grab me, and the casting doesn't compel me either. LMH generally never does much for me (acting or looks wise). PSH is better at acting than him, but I'm with all those that are questioning the chemistry of this pairing.

The news was disappointing. I'm terrified it'll be a horribly predictable cliche drama with a female lead that's poor and people pity and an asshole rich male lead that she falls for anyways. When will writers start being more creative and original instead of creating characters that don't use the full potential of the actors?
The other drama Sword and Flower would have been newer territory for her. That would have been more interesting to watch in terms of character and letting her display different skills.

How many interesting young female roles are being written these days? If there are no young actresses around, roles won't be written with them in mind and thus nobody gets a shot at a notable debut. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Required fields are marked *
canxi
April 4, 2013 at 7:19 PM
But, there ARE young actresses around. I think the main problem is that casting directors in SK seem to go more for who's hot RIGHT NOW. Which is why we may see the same girl many times. Not that there are no interesting young female roles being written, because I don't think that's the case.
A notable debut doesn't just depend on the writing alone, it depends on the actress. Cast a good actress who'll bring light to your character and that will shine no matter how badly or "just OK" the character is written. I hate to bring it up but FASHION KING! If not for that cast (not just the guys, but the girls too!), I feel like that drama would have gotten cut SO hard. But, I mean they acted wonderfully even when the writing was tripping balls every episode and I was scratching my eyeballs out wondering why I was still watching. Those were also interesting females, to me and in the end I realized I was watching because of that interestingness...not really the story. Not at all the story, lol.
The problem would be solved just by casting talent, not just who's hot or who will pull ratings, but who's got that something. Park Shin Hye is wonderful imo, yes, and I'm gonna enjoy seeing her and Lee Min Ho together for sure...but there are also tons of girls who could fit the bill, I bet and I don't think anyone should think there isn't or that there are no interesting roles being written for young females because if that was the case, these same actresses wouldn't take these roles. You HAVE to have an interest in what you do.
Also, your comment below--I disagree there too. I think the anti has been upped and everyone is seeking talent. Pretty will be there no doubt because that's part of the reason they are on TV in the first place, but acting, oh yeah I think many certainly do care.

I thought Go Dok-mi was fascinating. And a pretty meaty character, too. (Flower Boy Next Door) Also, whatever the feeling about the drama, Lee Soo-yeon had an interesting trajectory. (I Miss You) And then there was pretty much every single female character in Can We Get Married... Oh -- and Arang certainly broke standard roles, which made for an interesting character. (Arang and the Magistrate)
There's definitely interesting female roles out there. (Who gets cast in them... whomever can handle the roles and bring in the audiences I presume.)

Oh, and aside from Yeo Jin Goo, I don't think any of the people mentioned are so supremely talented. Your average drama viewer wants to see handsome guys and could care less about technical ability, imo.

April 4, 2013 at 3:52 PM
lol, you think none of those guys are supremely talented? ok. i think that's a severe underestimation of the average drama viewer. you'd also need to be more specific about which kind of drama because obviously the average viewer varies. if you mean romcoms then sure, everyone likes the pretty, but they could just watch clips or the cuts of a particular actor that fans make. just about everybody is handsome, you'd never leave the tv screen/monitor by that principle.

PSH is such a sweetheart. I've always seen her in this innocent-cutie girl role with lots of aegyo (well atleast in YB, HS and FBND). But I'm not really into her. It's the same old sht. I'll be honest that I'm a bit disappointed that she's been cast as LMH's leading lady because maybe I expect too much.
But this is a Lee Min Ho drama, so I'll surely watch this. And I just hope PSH's role in here is different from her previous roles. I hope it's more spunky! Maybe she can finally won my heart in this drama to be into her.
Now I'm excited for the second leads!! Heard this would be like BOF + Gossip Girl drama. So, are we having 4 pair of leads? Like 4 boys and 4 girls? Please someone cast JUNG IL WOO!!

Hey, if LMH recovered from GHS' robot kiss in BOF then he'll probably survive this as well. And with good directing and editing, they could make it seem like she's responding too. The best kiss he had was "Game Over" with SYJ in PT. I liked his kiss with KHS in Faith even if she wasn't as responsive (it's because of her marital status) but I liked their romance more. In City Hunter, it was okay but I was more into the action-revenge stuff more than his romance with Kim Nana.
Anyway, I'm not really concerned about the kisses, I'm more concerned about the sparks. I was into SG more because of HB & HJW's chemistry. The kisses in SG weren't that good in my opinion.

You my friend have just touched on the main problem I have with young female actress,(Espiscially Her, Koo Hye Sun, Park Min Young and Shin Se-Kyung) . They act like they don't know what a real kiss is. Maybe that's why I stay clear of any drama with them. I've tried so many times. It just make me cringe just watching a hug scene much less a kissing scene. Something that's supposed to be romantic and heart warming just feel like something down right wrong. It feeling like their doing something against their will. Ah well, I might just pass on this even if I love the writer's work(well, mainly "City Hall"). Sorry, her other works didn't do much for me at all. Although I do want to try and finish AGMD. "Secret Garden" still remains a no go. Now for LMH!! LOL!! After suffering watching 19 episodes of Faith,I'm kinda on the back bench with him. I tried so so so hard!! I really did, but My Gosh! what a drama. *swipes sweat* (But I'm conflicted, I always watch at least 7 episodes from this writer, so I guess I'll give it a try). Let's hope these two heats up the screen. And PLEASE don't make Park Shin-hye character childish. I want to see her as a strong leading female for once, just once.

@true2u
I can see where you're coming from as the viewer, but if you watch the BTS many times, the director will tell them to stop moving their lips or not to open their mouths.
In BOF, the director made Lee MinHo and Gu HyeSun do a retake on their kiss in the cave b/c he wanted just a "touch" of lips. Directors want that much of the time w/ dramas to give the purity effect. (It's different w/ films where you have a lot of raunchy stuff)

Hahaha, I feel the same way. But I must be the only one who actually likes my relationships (onscreen) platonic. I don't need kisses or ILYs to make my viewing experience enjoyable :)

Hello Susan, does ILYs stand for I Love Yous?
Also, I will second your comment in that, though I do like watching rom-com as a genre, I don't feel the need to watch kisses to have an enjoyable viewing experience. There are so many creative ways to show that the characters like each others, and imho, Kdramas writers (from what I have seen) can be really good at that. I will be honest and say that I do like the ILYs (if it means what I think it means), even though I know that they are fictional.
I also like platonic sleepovers as a trope in Kdramas (among many other tropes). So no, I don't think you are totally alone in how you like the interactions between the characters to be in your dramas, and I know of at least another beanie who feels the way I do. That makes at least three of us. Who knows, there might be more who might not comment :-)...

I agree with you guys, kisses aren't needed (ex: anyone watch Bollywood movies, in the older ones no one kisses, barely touch each other...but the chemistry is always there). BUT dammit, if you're gonna have a kiss put some pep in it is all I ask.

agreed......a drama can be romantic even if there are no kisses.....and Bollywood movies are a perfect example....they are romantic and the chemistry is awesome as well, and usually no kisses at all....

Canxi,
This is an aside, however thank you for reminding me of Bollywood movies. They showed them in my country when I was growing up at a few theaters (and no, my country is not in Asia), and I used to go watch them with my neighbor's children at least once a month, many, many years ago.
Not long ago, I came upon a TV series from India on YT. They had episodes of the show in segments (with no subtitles) and I watched a few. The main leads had so. Much. Chemistry. It was palpable and oozing off the screen. Of course they were both gorgeous (like really gorgeous, the guy was seriously hot), and they were playing hot and cold with each other (I think they must have had an argument or something and they dragged that on for a while).
The script of course had them have all kinds of "accidental skinship," and I was sooooo impressed by the chemistry oozing out of them, without a single kiss in the 2 or 3 hours of different segments I watched. The acting was excellent, and I was reminded that yes, kisses are not the only way to show that two characters are into each other (a lot :-) ). It made me want to watch their interactions BTS, and I did. They were really comfortable with each other and that was heartwarming to see.
And I think that because it might have been a TV series (and not a movie), they didn't break into songs (I was used to that when I was watching Bollywood movies back home). It was fine however, and very entertaining and quite creative.

Ivoire,
Yes, exactly! A friend of mine is from Bangladesh, and while over her house for a sleepover we watched Bollywood movies. The couple didn't even see each other for half the movie, but I could feel the love. There was so much. There were songs too, though, LOL.
Btw, if anyone wants to watch that movie, it's called "Devdas".

April 4, 2013 at 11:20 PM
Canxi,
Thank you so much for the recommendation of that movie. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it seems to be based on a novel by the same name. The movie also seems to have had many remakes over the years, in different languages, which is quite interesting.
I would also like to clarify that I don't mind the songs in Bollywood movies, it is just that I was expecting some in the show I was watching (out of habit, probably) and was a little surprised when that didn't happen, that's all. I will write the name down and see if I can find it on Youtube to watch it.
Oh, and snow_white, I am with you on everything you said :-)...

I don't need kisses per se either, but I agree with @canxi. If you are going to have kisses, they better be real.

No problem! I hope you like it, if you ever watch it. It's really good and the lead actress is super epic beautiful. As well as the hero's other love interest. Also, it's ok-- I didn't think anything when you said that the show didn't have songs, lol. Maybe I should have phrased that part differently now I read it over, haha!
Snow_white! So true, usually no kisses. It's awesome how they can pull that off every time.

I wish there's a Korean version of Devdas :-)
Okie.. Back to this drama. I guess that Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye acting is at the same level. Both young and hardworking, good looking and good image... yeah, they'll be okay.
All the best to the both of them...

@ Canxi,
I don't know if you will see this post/response, however, I am going to post/write it anyway. I was wondering what version of the movie "Devdas" you saw. When I look on Wikipedia, there were many versions (as I have mentioned), and I would like to see the version you saw. If you go to the Wiki page, do you think you could let me know, please? I would appreciate that (very much). I really want to watch it now, especially because of how you and L'ánn are enthusiastic about it.
Here is the info on the Wikipedia page:
1--The different versions of the movie (do you remember the year of the version you watched, by any chance)? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devdas#Film.2C_TV.2C_and_theatrical_adaptations
2--Info about the book it is based on and about the movies (the different versions): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devdas
If you get to read this message and answer to it, that would be great. Have a wonderful weekend.

hey Ivoire,
we seem to have something in common! I like Devdas too. The other lead actress, Madhuri Dixit is my family favorite. and my teenage years were spent watching her movies. And now I am in thirties.... Iam digging "baby" korean actors....how pathetic!!!:(. BTW, I love reading your comments!!

Hellooooooo Epuda,
So good to see another response (from you) to one of my comments :-). Yes, we do seem to have one thing in common. I haven't seen Devdas yet, what year of the movie did you watch? (I am asking because they are many versions /years of the movie made and I am trying to find the one Canxi was referring to, with the beautiful actor and actress.
Thank for your compliment (about my writing), I remember you from the 7LCS episode 20 recap :-). I promised to answer to your response, and I never did, sorry about that. I thought about doing it though, I just didn't get around to doing it. I think I will still write something to Dominique and you, just so it is posted there. (I would feel better about that).
By the way, I don't think you are pathetic for digging "baby"Korean, though it depends how young we are talking about. So how young are the ones you dig?I am north of thirty myself, and I do find some of those Korean actors adorable and cute. For me, it is the personality however that wins me over, hence my love for Lee Seung-gi for instance. He is really is a people person and he knows how to interact with people. I also like the ahjussi actors a lot, because they are closer to my age group, and they have gravitas and they are really good actors and they don't get as much credit as the younger ones.
I will look Madhuri Dixit up and hopefully, I will have the time to watch some of her movies. Thank you for writing and "waving" at me :-).

Hey Ivoire,
thanks for replying to my comment and sorry for not getting back to you immediately! for some reasons i was expecting a notification like in FB when someone comment on your post hehehe..... . Yes the one I was talking about is the one made in 2002. Although I don't like any movies or drama with sad ending this was an exception. The country I hail from watch lots and lots of hindi movies and dramas. but things are slowly changing ...korean wave is taking over...and you will find even housewives watching korean dramas!
My dalliance with korean drama began in 2007 or 2008 when I watched "Full House" and followed up with "Love to Kill". that drama put me off Korean drama for the next 3 yrs. My interest renewed when my friend recommended me to watch "coffee prince" in late 2011, then I followed up with "City Hunter" and there has been no turning back!!
I was just counting to myself and seems I have watched about 55 or so since then..and that is a enormous feat I have accomplished considering I have three children all under 10 and full hectic work schedule!! Right now I am a student again pursuing my doctorate and like one of the comments here (yours?) "so many dramas to watch yet so little time"!!
well that was a lot did I cover everything?....and for me I go for Lee Min Ho, Yoon Shi Yoon, Joo Won, Lee Jun ki,... oh well I guess all!!!!

Hello Dito, Epuda and Canxi,
Dito, I wrote you a response this morning at 7:24am, Dramabeans time (the time that shows up when your comment is posted) and it is still awaiting moderation and it is 12:15pm now, DB time. I don't know when it will be posted, however, just know that I did respond to you and also I gave you my email address so you could email me as well, since it is getting crowded here. I also added a YT link to the drama segments I have been watching (I need to add more, I just posted one). The drama I saw on YT was with Arnav and Khushi, FYI. I really liked the segments I saw, such sizzling chemistry.
@ Epuda, my computer was slow this morning, so I let it "rest" with the hope that it will run better. I had to finally restart it. I am going to write a response to you (now), however, it might have a "your comment is awaiting moderation" comment on it as well, which would mean that you might not be able to see it right away as well, just so you know.
@ Canxi, I saw your latest comment, thank you for that. I will be checking back here to see if your comment has been finally posted. Thank you for coming back and checking on the responses. I appreciate that.

Hello epuda,
I hope you saw my last comment. You guys have me sold on watching "Devdas, 2002 version/edition :-)" So I will be waiting for Canxi's comment to show (she has a link in it for me, it might be of the movie) and see if I can access it (which hopefully I will be able to do).
Epuda, if I may ask you (and I don't think a lot of people are coming back to read these comments, so not many people will read this), what country do you hail from? I am originally from Cameroon (Central Africa), however I am currently living in the US. In some African countries, they show Indian movies as well in movie theaters. They did in my country when I was growing up (in a few theaters), and that was many, many, many years ago. I used to love them (as I mentioned or hinted in one of my earlier posts here) and I even used to go to the market and buy the audio tapes of my favorite singers and movies OSTs, believe it or not :-). I would listen to them at home when I was cleaning my room, etc... So yeah, Indian movies and I, we go a looooong way back.
My own dalliance with Korean dramas started in 2010 (so later than you) with Personal Taste, with no other than you know who :-) who has been discussed a lot here. I came across it on a US online website that hosts dramas and movies and shows (all kinds) from different countries called HULU. They had ventured into showing Korean dramas, which are slowly becoming popular in the US. BOF was then recommended to me, and I couldn't stand the F4 boys, so I stopped at episode 3. I was encouraged to watch more from a friend of mine, which I did and I kind of liked it. I was not on GJP's team however, I always rooted for Jin-ho (Kim Hyun Joong's character) and I liked the Kim Bum and Kim So Eun's pairing as well. I also liked how LMH looked like in PT and in BOF (the way his hair was styled, etc...).
I watched a few more, some better than others, and I discovered that we actually had 2 Korean TV stations in my area, so I had them on whenever I could. I watched more dramas that way and was introduced to more genres. I have come to find out that I really love the ones that make me think, such as political dramas, some historical ones (Gaksital, The King 2 Hearts) and I love some rom-com as well. I actually like many genres as long as the acting is really good, the OST is wonderful (I love Faith OST, not so much the drama, or at least not as much as I like the OST. I like some of the acting in Faith and some of the scenes, but not the whole drama), the cinematography (That Winter, The Wind Blows, The Moon That Embraces The Sun) and I also love dramas that have actors in their 30s and up, because many of them are really good actors (The King of Dramas with Kim Myun Min [sp?]) and now "All about My Romance" with Shin Ha Kyun.
I have watched a lot of dramas, however I am not sure that I have watched as many as you. I tend to take my time to watch them and I participate on blogs a lot (mostly this one. I sometimes write on two other ones as well), so, that is time consuming as well. I think I like reading and writing about dramas and the K. entertainment world more than I do watching them. I also like some of their variety shows like "We Got Married," Happy Together, 1Night2Days and a few more that I have watched.
What drew you to Korean dramas? I personally like that they are more chaste (in general) than what I see on US TV. Yes there are good looking people in it (many of whom have had some form of plastic surgery to achieve their looks), however I like more so that I get to be exposed and learn about a different world, culture, language (I am a linguist, I speak 4 different languages fluently), food, music, etc... Korean dramas have lead to my (serious) interest in the two Koreas, and I am grateful for that. I also like that many of their cultural traditions/habits are similar to the ones in some African countries, so I can relate to some of what I see about the Korean culture.
I do agree with you that it is an enormous feat that you have watched so many dramas, considering how busy your life has been. If you don't mind my asking, what are you getting your doctorate in? And yes, I was the one who said this week, “so many dramas to watch yet so little time”!! or something along those lines in "The Mandate of Heaven's Man" thread. I guess you read that as well :-). It is neat that you have children. I don't have any, but I am the older of 6 (I grew up being the 2nd mom :-) ). I have worked with children for many, many, many years now as a nanny, so I have been around children for a long time.
Regarding your last paragraph, the actors you mentioned are all of legal and of a decent age. I was wondering if they might be younger. I gave my email address in my response to Dito, so when that post is posted, please feel free to email me (if you are OK with that). I have done that with some people here before, and I have never had any problems, so far. Just a thought :-)... I don't want to write it again (my email address), in case it causes my comment to await moderation, because then I don't know when this comment will be posted. I think my post ended up being longer than yours :-)... And I believe I covered everything :-)

Hello Dito,
Thank you for butting in :-). I am soooo glad you did. Thank you for the recommendation for the Devdas movie 2002. Do you think I could find it on YT? I will look for it there.
The Indian drama/series I watched was with Arnav and Khushi (that is what I have been seeing on YT). I have rarely seen such wonderful and oozing chemistry on screen from two people who don't kiss each other (on the lips) and I personally like that. I have seen several segments, and it will take me a while to find them. Here is one that I just watched, if you could explain this to me, I would appreciate it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XkUnmil2NI

LOL, true true. I think Park Shin Hye is lovely but then a kiss scene comes and everything romantic she built up till then with her co-star gets dissipated as soon as they, quite literally, touch lips. It's so weird, I dunno if they are just simply uncomfortable or if the director tells them to hold back....I know sometimes I see BTS and the director does do that and I'm sitting around like "WHY?!?" Make it hot or just don't do it. It's not like she is under age.

Agree, agree.....sometimes I wish they'd not kiss instead. The moment they kiss, it's so awkward I snap back to reality and think, ok, they're acting, and the romance just poof! disappears. I remember watching "Constantine" with Keanu Reeves and Rachael Weizs, and they never kissed, not once, but there was so much palpable chemistry between them, and the most romantic scene was two of them leaning in so close, noses almost touching, and it's just so romantic. In 49 Days, Kang-ah and the girl never kiss, but the scene where their hands just lightly graze each other was beautiful. No kiss, no words. Just that fleeting moment of tenderness.

She did her bit, too - I saw head-tilting to reach his lips, and even a wee bit of lip movement and clutching on to is coat to hold him tighter - SUCH an improvement over the kiss before that.
And I don't think it's entirely fair to single her out for not actively participating in her on-screen kisses when 90% of Korean actresses in dramas do the exact same thing, usually on PD's orders, and the guys are the ones who do all the work.
For an example, just look at Nice Guy or even the celebrated 'game over' kiss from Personal Taste - Song Joong Ki and Lee Min-ho were the ones who looked like they were doing all the kissing (and sometimes this is down to editing too - in BTS footage, there's a split-second shot of MCW actually kissing SJK back on the police station steps....but it's not in the scene
Just to clarify, I'm not asking for everyone to be Frenching, but it would be a wee bit more convincing if they were allowed to look like they were into a kiss instead of just tolerating it. (Yoon Eun-hye and Jung So-min are two awesome exceptions to this rule, though)

Kiss scenes have changed so much over the years, it's quite sad. Actors & Actresses used to make an effort and make it look so real in the past, but now... *sigh* I think I blame mostly the directors cuz they seem to never get over the whole *wide-eyed stare/ arms down/ 5 second camera freeze/ girl and boy holding their breath/ camera spinning around 360 degrees* The directors should give more freedom! And actresses also should try a little harder. I still remember My Lovely Sam Soon kiss scene and Worlds Within (?) with Hyun Bin and Hye Kyo plentiful amount of kissing scenes or even Flower Boy Ramen Shop (...I think I got that wrong lol)....etc
If you're gonna do it, try harder, or don't do it at all.
Romance films don't always need kissing scenes to show their love, nor does sadness always require tears, and anger doesn't have to equal to shouting.

Some people are going to be so thrilled about this.
I like her well enough, she just hasn't any chemistry - with anyone - that isn't cute and sweet and asexual. I know just what sort of relationship it is going to be: he is going to be a jerk, in an atmosphere filled with silly misunderstandings, arguments that hurt for exactly a day, and clever hijinks like the knit skirt being unravelled by a stray thread. He will probably think that she likes the other guy, while she is convinced he likes the other girl. In the end, she will look up at him with her huge, adoring eyes and he will melt, and the audience will all say, 'awwww.' Cue one lip-locked kiss, same as in FBND, and end. Maybe I need more edgy in my dramas, because this whole premise, and the pairing, is boring me out of my skull.

I have to agree with you about the chemistry bit, if you're talking about sexual attraction type of chemistry. That type I haven't really seen out of PSH, at least in my opinion. But I think PSH as Dok Mi had great emotional chemistry with YSY as Enrique in that old souls kind of way. Call me superficial, though...I don't really want to see old souls kind of chemistry between her and Lee Min Ho. I want to see some sparks fly!

I don't want to force myself thinking "They are in love* I want to feel like their in love. Not just acting out what the script say. I want them to bring that scripted character to life. Wow, then doesn't that make PSH an amazing women? I mean, she got all these handsome co-stars and yet she doesn't even like any of them romantically (hence, why no chemistry) where we viewers will probably faint if any of the male stars were in front of us XD

No, they did not. I like to believe thats because they are such good friends they did not know how to have chemistry. You could tell during the kissing scenes they did not know how to kiss each other, and they did not want to kiss each other. What made that drama was how you could feel that they really did care for each other, but the relationship felt more like a best friend relationship more than a romantic one.
I find it funny that if Yong-hwa does sign in PSH will have been in all the dramas he has been in.

The kiss in Heartstrings was one of the most painful and awkward things I have had to watch in my entire kdrama-viewing life. Even their back hug was icky to watch because it felt like they were in pain doing it.
They had incredible chemistry as teenage-y, cutesy lovers. But no emotional attraction that transcends into the physical, if that makes sense. You know how some pairings just glides into the scenes with so much chemistry that they seem like their dancing somehow? Well, they don't have that.

Anyone ever watched PSH and Lee Wan in Stairways to Heaven and Tree of Heaven (?... I hope I got the last title right).
I think what Shin Hye need is a strong male lead... Someone that can play broody roles... I love the chemistry between PSH & Lee Wan or Kim Tae Hee's little brother (where the hell is he now??)

I have reservations also on the chemistry thing and PSH, but I also take into account the writing and directing and project over all. How much lack of heat can we put on the actors when script and directing choices don't call for heat? We all know that YSY can throw some heat, but that's not the direction that FBND went (much to my disappointment). It appears she chooses projects/is cast in projects that don't have a lot of heat. That does worry me a little in this casting with LMH, because I'd love to see some fireworks and chemistry. Nothing would make me happier to see my misgivings obliterated with a full dose of shock and awe when the project comes to fruition.

He's in Gu Family Book right now, and perhaps the end of Gu would overlap with the beginning of filming for this drama. Also, I don't think he meshes with LMH and PSH; Sung Joon is a lot edgier, more complicated, he can do dark and angsty and in lust. I would LOVE to see him in a college-set drama, but I think it would be a lot different from where we are headed with this one, LOL.

I'll take the bait and make a guess...
Given the title of the drama, I bet it'll draw inspiration from Shakespear's Henry IV. If so, LMH's character will parallel Prince Harry's. PSH's character might parallel Lady Kate. Lady Kate is a strong woman. But, in that story her husband (Lord Percy) avoided intimacy with her because he thought it would make him appear weak.
If the writer stays close to Shakespear's original, this would set up a plotline where LMH's character is born a prince but chooses to be a scoundrel who hangs out with bad company. The hidden part of his character will be that his true inner motive has always been to reform himself and bring honor to the family name. Eventually he is pressed into doing it by some sort of threat to the family dynasty.
The parallel plotline would be with PSH's character. She would be a woman who compels his attention. He falls for her, but doesn't want to show it. On the surface it looks like ambivolence or arrogance. But the inner motivation will be because he fears the vulnerability that his feelings create.
If this was the setup, we'll see LMH scoundrel during the first 1/2 of the episodes. The family crisis at the midpoint. And his reformation as a prince will parallel his reformation as a Prince Charming during the last 1/2 of the show. Of course the revelation of his inner motives will be done all at once in the last episode.
It's interesting that in Henry IV Kate is a character who wants intimacy but keeps getting rejected. We'll see if they stay close to that plotline with PSH. Wouldn't it be a surprise if they did!

Then she meets our hero who's an arrogant/all about himself, who doesn't accept her/looks down on her etc. PSH gotta prove herself in this new world, they continue to clash and of course fall in love during the course.

I was floored, Make me turned off in watching any dramas he comes in. and I must agree, LHM acting skills is nothing to scream about. The guy lost me in Faith. and while I'm not a Hugh fan of PSH(mainly because of her lack of chemistry with her leading man and the regular lip touch scene) she's ok in my book. I don't know for others but I watch rom-coms to see funny people in love on my screen. When you're in love you don't care about what is happening around you when you kiss, AND you participate. If you can see the actress counting the seconds in her head or even worst, feeling like she is assaulted, that's a problem.
That said, we have to be honest: Sometime the disappointment comes from the actress and other times it's just the choice of the Director.

Did you see the kiss of Me too, Flower? It was a MBC drama, prime-time slot. The LMH kiss in Personal Taste is legendary and others are good too. When you want, you can. For me a bad kiss in a rom com is like a orange ketchup stain instead of a realistic blood stain in a cop drama: Oh, it's fake! Giggles and tsk, tsk...

If we're going to compare onscreen kisses, I'd have to say the best ones were done by Ariel Lin and her co-star Joe Chen from the Taiwanese dramas It Started With a Kiss and the sequel (ISWAK2). No faking, no hesitation, no weirdness. There was passion, intensity, and some serious romance. Some of the kisses were not even part of the script but these two injected them into it to depict a romantic reality of newlyweds. I have never watched a Kdrama that can show that. It's not like I mind that (Taiwanese dramas tend to have a lot of passionate kisses anyways) since I prefer to see excellent romantic chemistry built up before anything. However, I do like to see a good kiss to make me believe in the reality of that romance as Mystisith and Orion have pointed out in their comments here.

April 4, 2013 at 11:34 PM
I feel a novella-post coming on....
I think your last comment gets to the heart of it: how do actors choreograph kisses that strike a balance between innocent and evocative. The age range of the audience is one consideration. But an equal one is the personal feelings of the actors. I imagine that it's hard for the ones who hold more tradiitonal personal values to know how to balance their personal feelings with what an audience demands. The actors who compromise their deep-seated values step onto a slippery slope and often end up with really messed up personal lives. I sympathize with their dilemma, and applaud those who stay true to themselves.
That said, I do think it's possible for even the most modest actors to choeograph kisses that strike the right balance. In thinking about what makes a good kiss scene, I looked back at the ones I thought were really good. *tough word but somebody's gotta do it*. For me, the good kiss scenes are more of a dance and communicate a nuanced subtext.
The good, the bad and the ugly...and the other.
The ugly: the typical Hollywood kiss. Involves repetitive guppy-like opening and closing of mouth on partner's face. Brings to mind two words: Yuck and Cujo.
The bad: the Korean version of the Hollywood kiss. Involves male lead swiping his upper lip over the entire region between the nose and upper lip of the female lead. Brings to mind three words: sloppy adolescent boy.
The good: the Kdrama first kisses that really say something. In their own way they advance the story without dialogue. Each one of them has a distinct subtext message that's greater than a brainless "I want you".
Here's the kissing choreography that are my faves:
The 'I want to but shouldn't' kiss: think of any almost-kisses between leads in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. Or the almost-kisses between the two leads in City Hunter. Two words: please do.
The 'you're helping me overcome my barriers' kiss: think of the 'let me taste the kimchee recipe' kiss (etc.) in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop by the character who couldn't stand touching messy things. Two words: more please.
The conservative 'is this ok with you' kiss: First half of Episode 8 car kiss in Queen In Hyun's man. Watch it and count how many times he asks "is this really ok with you" using only body language. It's a compelling, intimate, silent dialogue. He asks multiple times by pausing, waits for her responses, which she subtly communicates through her eyes. 5 words: Yup, that's ok with me.
The 'let me tell you how I feel about you' kiss: second half of Episode 8 car kiss in Queen In Hyun's Man. There's nothing mechanical about what was going on there. Not suprising they ended up dating. 3 words: please don't stop. And a question: do you have a brother...?
And the other...
The passionaate kiss: Episode 6 restaurant kiss in Me Too Flower. Admittedly if you look close, there's a bit of 'the bad' in the first half of the kiss. But what really makes the choreography of this kiss interesting is how it shifts: the grab is replaced by the genuine embrace (no limp, lifeless hands, but they're not gropey either), the use of force changes to a swaying back and forth (advancing and retreating in a connected balance of power dynamics, and...), and a forced kiss with typical "the bad" elements changes to one with pauses...but paues that are filled by intimate cheek-to-cheek, forehead-to-forehad, nose-to-nose and corner of mouth-to-corner of mouth connectedness...like they couldn't get close enough. Words: *no words, can't breathe*
If good musical artistry is defined by the silence created between the notes, all of the kiss scenes I liked were defined by their pauses. My takeaway is that the good kiss scenes are about much more than passion. They're used as romantic storyline elements to advance the character arcs...even if it's a 'I want to but shouldn't' almost-kiss. And the ones that are done right are choreographed so they don't need to be visually enhanced by the standard Kdrama confection of three scoops of zoom-in with swirley circling camera work on top.
If LMH and PSH work on it a bit I'm sure they can fine tune the artistry and create kiss choreography that's modest (which seems to be what she needs), yet made passionate by nuance and storytelling.
Here's hoping they lock them in a room until they get it figured out.

@gidget: love your analysis. I watched both FBRS & QIHM, and I watched MTF's kiss scene only because I heard so many raves about it.
Yes, a kiss is not really required in a drama (I'm satisfied with longing looks, hand holding, or some form of skinship), but when there's a kiss scene then the actors should get into it.
ALSO, the kiss scene(s) should be part of the story and not because they're doing it as fan service as cover for the lack of story *glares at LieToMe*.
PS: I hate Hollywood kisses. Technically, they look hot and heavy but it doesn't do anything to me as it feels so shallow. Maybe that's why I like watching kdramas, because when they do kisses and they do it right, it's unforgettable and makes you squee no matter how many times you watch it.
PS2: Taiwanese dramas - too much kisses that sometimes it's too distracting. When I was still watching Tdramas, I mostly skip the kiss scenes no matter how good they are. ;)

I guess that explains our differences - I did not like Me Too Flower or Personal Taste. I remember the (loooong) kiss scene in MTF but that was just about it. And I can't even remember the kiss scene in Personal Taste so I guess the kisses did not make the dramas for me :-)

@Ace
Isn't it strange that the Hollywood kiss is meant to depict passion, but they completely fail to understand that style is just gross? Any woman who's ever been kissed that way knows how gross and impersonal it is. The only actor who I've thought is consistently good at selling it is, oddly enough, Russell Crowe.
But you said it well, once you've seen a good Kdrama kiss scene everything else pales in comparison. I re-watched an old Russell Crowe movie a bit ago and ended up thinking "meh".
Orion

Because we watch romance to see actual romance and people who are romantically involved kiss like they are involved and have sex (at least hinted sex).
I cannot see two people as a romantically involved couple if they "kiss" like they're trying to hold their breath underwater and generally show no sign of sexual attraction to each other.
"Pure love" is a nice notion, but it's also a false one. If you dig someone and don't feel like kissing or sleeping with them, you're friends and not a couple. Simple as that. ;)
That said, it's clear all the planets have to be aligned for good kissing. Actors and actresses have to actually do their job and act and the PD and channel and writer and who-ever need to also allow it. So we very rarely get actual semi-realistic relationships and kisses in kdrama.

It CAN, though! It'll seriously throw you out of the romance if the kiss is two people with their lips on top of each other not moving or worse...SMILING while their lips are on top of each other not moving (your lips should be too busy to smile!). And if one of the main hooks in the drama is the romance, you can't risk being thrown out.

A good melo actress must know how to cry. If you're doing sageuks you must master the sageuk speech and if you do romantic dramas or movies you must know how to kiss well. Some are natural at that and some need to learn (it's a real discipline, with techniques): Nothing shameful here.

The kiss is not just a kiss, as the song goes; it is, for kdramas, often the ultimate statement that seals the deal on the OTP's love and commitment. Usually, if an actor is bad at kissing, they are also bad at all of the subtle things that lead up to it that clue the audience in on the relationship: hand-holding, casual touching, various violations of space done for the great fun of it. A talented actress can make you absolutely certain that she is really, truly in love and that the whole really is larger than the sum of its parts - other actresses pull out the cute and you end up focusing on how cute they are rather than what it all means. Other actresses clam up and go stiff as a board, which takes you right out of the story and right out of the "willing suspension of disbelief" just when you should be feeling it the most.
The porn that you disdainfully suggested is the exact opposite of what I am looking for: deep connection, honest openness, and joy.

If someone calls themselves an actor/actress and chooses roles with kissing, they should be able to make it seem real, just like crying, smiling, feeling.
I'm not saying get naked and fake-hump your co-star, but if you do pick a movie where sex is involved, then it's your duty as an actor to fake it convincingly, since it was your choice.
Same thing with kissing or any other type of action of the body or face. Seeing so many Korean actors and actresses doing so well in other aspects and suddenly breaking character when the kiss comes up is sad. Be it because they don't want to do it, don't know how (like any adult doesn't...) or because someone won't let them.

Please drama gods, do not let the writer/director/producer/anyone involved (including the two of them) screw this up. Please, bake a good dramacake out of this, one which I can eat with gusto and without worrying about how said dramacake could be better. I'm begging you.

I heard from another site that in the drama she's also a heir to its hardly the typical candy story... She's supposedly a pig farm heir and its not the usual "nice" girl role she usually goes for, hopefully a more snappy rich girl that comes from a different money background than LMH.. Also he's suppose to lose his inheritance so that's where the hijinx comes from. So yea, if the rumours are true, then this story actually doesn't seem as boring as you might assume just cause of the PSH and LMH's typecast. Anyway I love both, its a fresh pairing and can't wait for this!!

Anyways, hope it will be good. Mike needs a break out drama to balance all the crappy ones he's been in recently before he enlists in the military.

I dont know what to think anymore... maybe I should wait for the synopsis... im still not convinced with min ho in a rich people teen drama -again- but I like shin hye and I hope the writer make a decent female lead this time around... the thing is that I thought there would be some not that well known actors/actresses that could actually have a chance to get the spotlight this time... i still have hope that the second leads would be some not that known actors... hopefully some of the actors/actresses in School 2013 *---*

What an odd pairing.
Lee MinHo is so BIG everywhere in Asia and then you have Park Shinhye. She's sweet but average, and plain with her looks. (Actually I wonder if she had an injury to her nose in the past because it looks like a football player's nose. And her ears stick out too. Not trying to be mean, just noticing the mismatching.)

Like I said, I think she's sweet. I'm not bashing her. I'm just a bit surprised that in a country like Korea where superficial outer appearance is so highly valued, that she has the popularity that she does to be placed w/ Lee Min Ho.
Objectively speaking, when I look at her I can't help to focus on her stubby nose. I'm not saying at all that she should get a nose job. I think it's great she's kept away from that. I am merely making the observation I stated above.
(the real bashers on this thread are the ones who bash comments that go against their opinions, calling others "disgusting")

I still think your above comment is disgusting because 1) you are picking out every little imperfections in PSH's looks and completing bypassing her acting stills 2) and why is her acting skills relevant here? because she is an actress for crying out loud not a super freaking face model for cosmetics and we are talking about her new drama 3) and why did you not pick out the imperfections in LMH as well? You know, I can see quite a few of those in his features but I won't go down that route 4) and, the insinuation in your comment alluding to the fact that she is no good for your prince-charming because of those imperfections? 5) lastly, it's comment/people like these that's fueling the industry craze to produce more and more generic plastic beauties (with "nose #1", "eyes#2", "chin#6" or whatever on their catalogue for the choosing)...
Hope that's detailed enough to explain my disgust... BTW, I am not attacking you here just pointing out the things from your comment above that disgusts me..

Typo above - meant to say "completely bypassing her acting skill"..
Also, I am not your hot-headed super-fan type and although I do adore PSH very much, she is in fact not my favorite k-actress at all. If you sense any "bitching or bashing/bristling", they are for the reasons mentioned above..

@AnotherFan
Actually, I'm not a big fan of Lee MinHo. It seems you've completely misunderstood the content of what I was saying.
It was more a comment/ observation about Korean culture. I have nothing against PSH. She's a good dancer. Acting-wise though, you give her too much credit. Her acting skills are mediocre (and may I add that the DB crew have said the same), but there's always room to grow.
You should really learn how to debate or converse without getting personally offended. My comments about PSH weren't an attack on you - yet you reacted as if they were or if you were her mother.
peace, chill.
AnotherFan
April 5, 2013 at 4:06 PM
@Pham
I don't see where I gave too much credit to PSH's acting form the above comment but I do think she is a very good actor. And if you think she is mediocre, I respect that, and you don't need to quote DB crew here :-)
And I think you took my comment about your comment personally as opposed to the other way around - if you read more carefully, I called your earlier comment "disgusting"(and in fact, still do), not you! So I don't see how that was me taking things personally.
I am not old enough to be PSH's mother but honestly, I wouldn't mind having a daughter like her. So thank you.
And peace out..

April 5, 2013 at 4:14 PM
@Pham,
And please don't take the whole thing as a PSH fan vs. LMH fan. I am a bit too old for that and I don't understand these fan-dom fights anyways. I just did not appreciate the way an actress (good or bad) was put down like that in comparison to the popular actor she's paired to play against..

April 5, 2013 at 4:34 PM
I'd love to live in town where the average girl looked liked plain and average PSH with a weird looking nose and ears. Instead finding so many faults with her face perhaps you should take the time to look at a mirror.
P.S. Not trying to be offensive. :)

April 4, 2013 at 6:07 PM
I think one of my favorite things about PSH is the fact that she has imperfections and is one of the few that hasn't gone under the knife one bit. And those imperfections you speak of is what makes her even more human, and quite frankly, is the best part about distinguishing uniqueness. These days, they all look the same, so actually the plain(to you) ones are the ones that stand out.

Quite frankly it is impossible to please everyone. You want age-appropirate, you want good kisser, you want chemistry, you want someone that's not everywhere, you want a good actress, you want something different. And you don't want Park Shin Hye. Do you want Yoona instead or something?

lol at people think PSH isn't good enough when both KBS and SBS fighting to get her for their high profile dramas of the year
Writer KES has set eyes on Park Shin Hye (she strongly recommended her). The pd even added more on the casting reason that "(Shinhye) has stability in her acting, (she) fits well the drama character and image, therefore sent the offer/ love call.
Love or hate it, she's the writer choice. I'm so glad and happy the writer notices her acting skills and ability ^^
Since her previous actresses are A-listers. It just stabilized Shinhye 's position in the industry tbh
I personally prefer her to go with KBS's Sword and flower but it's hard to say no with KES and SBS. Plus this drama gives her time for her tour so it makes sense. I just hope her role will do her acting justice.
Because we all know PSH and LMH can act
