Onscreen Flower Boy romance turns real

javabeans: What’s the one thing better than a drama lead couple making it official and dating in real life?

girlfriday: When the second lead actually gets the girl?

javabeans: Totally. Now you can shake any lingering doubts or pangs of sympathy, knowing that Mr. Forlorn Pillar doesn’t walk away from Flower Boy Ramyun Shop a lonely bachelor after all — not when he has apparently been dating the heroine for the past year.

girlfriday: Yup. Cha Chi-soo gets Yang Eun-bi, but Lee Ki-woo gets Lee Chung-ah. Seems fair. Also, if it were the other way around, I might cry.

javabeans: …out of the heebee-jeebies because he feels like a baby next to her?

girlfriday: No, because he’s MY baby.

javabeans: Um. I think we’d better step away from that statement and all its Freudian implications.

girlfriday: Dunno whatchoo mean. *innocent face* So, let’s say they fell in love on the set of Ramyun Shop. What’s the scene? Post-shower abfest? When he calls her wifey for the first time?

javabeans: They’re saying they started dating after the show — which ended in 2011 — which either means they were just flirting all throughout filming, or they’re totally lying. Apparently the official start of dating was after they both went on a trip with their “celebrity ski team.” Dude, where is this team and how can I crash it?

girlfriday: Cue sight gag. But Lee Ki-woo is already taken. What would be the point?

javabeans: Quick, somebody get Lee Min-ho into skiing!

girlfriday: Wait, how is Jung Il-woo a baby and Lee Min-ho not?

javabeans: I don’t know, but it totally works that way. The laws of dramaland are fickle and mysterious.

I always thought they had better chemistry versus the OTP in the show (I did not care for the OTP at all by the way). So, way to go!

I've heard lots of people say they had second lead syndrome while watching that drama... was the storyline creepy or did you just like Lee Ki Woo better?

Cha Chi Soo (the male lead in that show) was just too much of the typical chaebol brat for me. Yawn. And, I didn't really feel any true romantic vibes from him and Lee Chung Ah's character. I felt PHYSICAL attraction, yeah, but that was all. Nothing deeper than that, so they didn't do anything for me when they were together.

I normally come around to the OTP in the end, even if I kind of hate myself for it (Shining Inheritance, goddammit Seung-gi), but Ramyun Shop... just couldn't. At all. I think it boils down to just not ever being able to see Chi Soo as anything but a kid. And Lee Ki Woo's character was--well, very much not a kid.
Also I cannot understand why any straight female would turn down a tall, handsome chef devoted to her happiness without detriment to his own self-esteem. I JUST CAN'T. Look, now you've brought back all the angst.

My sentiments, exactly.

0

Seung-gi's character was a brat, alright! Wanted to throttle him on more than one occasion.

0

I'm with you, Nanaki. They handled the ending well enough so that I could swallow her with Cha Chi Soo, kind of, but I always always preferred her with our lovely Onion/Panda/Pillar.

0

+1 with tati.
I actually stopped watching this show because I wanted the second lead to get the girl and it was not gonna happen :(

0

I watched FBRS mostly on-and-off, but yeah, I couldn't get behind the OTP because I couldn't shake off the feeling that Cha Chi Soo was still a kid, even by episode 16 when he has grown up a little. And Lee Ki Woo's character just seemed so much more husband material and more like the type of guy sane women in real life tend to marry (except there are few guys as good-looking as Lee Ki Woo...)

0

Nodding in totally agreement. I'm so happy to see this! They had great chemistry on screen; nice to see it applies off screen, too.

0

I love Jung Il Woo, but as characters, I just loved Pillar so much more than Chi Soo! He was so sweet, so large, so mature, and so hawt. I kept saying, I'd pick him, I'd pick him, I'd pick him!

Second Lead Syndrome bit me bad in FBRS, so I'm SO STOKED that Pillar got his girl!!! Woot! Way to go, you sneaky Pillar, you ^^

Nanaki and kfangurl,
I third what both of you have said. In my case, I usually ship the 2nd lead, except in dramas like TK2Hs, where there were no real 2nd male lead to really compete with (since he ended up having his own love interest). I am not a big JIW fan and yes, LKW is hawt!!!!

I actually stopped watching the show because of this. I really could not take ti anymore. It is like the drama world does not understand women. I mean I do like (love) Jung Il Woo, but I could NOT get behind this couple. He basically makes her life miserable for half of the show, and she is a grown up that has to take care of a man-child. Why do dramas make it seem that women want to marry men who they have to mother. They have mothers for that people!

Pillar was a MAN. He was perfectly ready to take care of her as a partner. He was someone she could feel confident in leaning on without giving upher pride. He respected her as well as loved her. And then, did they miss how fine he looked coming out of the shower AND the fact that he had NO commitment issues? I was so done. There was no way I could watch anymore.

This is so exciting. Second Leads of the world unite!!!

Hello trotwood,
I 2nd what you said and it is so well said!!!! I didn't watch the drama the whole way through, just a few episodes here and there and I kept up with the recaps. Like you, I couldn't get behind this pairing, and I wondered what LCA's character saw in JIW's character, but oh well, I guess that's dramaland for you. It is one of those times when it seems that we have to leave our brain at the door and shake our head in disbelief.

And yes to this: " Second Leads of the world unite!!!" :-)

0

I had the worst second lead syndrome in history because his character was refreshing and sorta...interesting.

I think the audience felt strongly the same way I did so they intentionally screwed with his character later on. I'm glad my ship finally sailed!

Now I'm looking at you Nine leads! I'm looking at you.

I liked Cha Chi Soo and didn't think he was too bad of a brat. Lol But the romance was hard to buy because she looked so much older than him to me. I don't know what the real ages are but she looked like she could be his aunt.

Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes to everything said above! This was my first ever K-drama and I had second male lead syndrome SOOOOO bad. All the way until the 15th episode I was sure that he was going to get the girl, CCS just made no sense to me. I stopped watching when it became clear my dear husband was going to lose out. I just didn't have the heart to go on.

I made up my own ending where she only dated CCS for a little while then did some growing up herself and eventually met Pillar again and they got together. Now I feel like it came true :)

But the kiss between Cha Chi Soo and Eun Bi is one of the hottest n Kdramas. I actually think there was a future to such a pairing. The drama did lay out that Cha Chi Soo's father fell in love with Chi Soo's mother against all odds - and remained faithful to her even after her death...

Well, that kiss was hot. period. hehehe

Hello snow_white,

How awesome is that?!!! Quite awesome!!!!! I am very happy for the two of them. Forlorn Pillar was soooooo my favorite in that drama, I am so happy he got the girl (in real wife)!!!!! I remember the way he cut her food, the way he looked at her, the way he called her wifey and how sad he looked when he said goodbye to her and left (like a good second lead would) (OK, I don't remember if he looked sad really, I do remember feeling sad for him). I also loved his bickering with JIW, they were cute.
I love that I get excited for people who are dating, and I don't even know them personally (not that I need to). Yay!!!!

Thank you Girlfriday and Javabeans for the funny and witty conversation! I enjoyed it. Does anyone know if LMH knows how to ski? (Now I am just curious)...

Hey Mawiie,
I thought about that ski trip in BOF, however I don't remember him actually skiing. I remember seeing Ki Bum in the snow (he saved KSE from being hit by a snowboarder) and I remember GJP going to get JD in the snow (when she lost the necklace), at night, but I don't remember him skiing, specifically. That said, I could be wrong... I watched that drama a long time ago.

Hi back snow_white,

Seriously though right? :-). Like one of the commenter said here, he was just perfect!!! I would sigh when I would see him and see how he was with her. He was one of those characters (and imho Korean actors are really good at this) that would do cheesy things like quietly cut her food, put the plate in front of her, and it didn't look cheesy at all. It looked caring, and endearing, and just like those small gestures that someone would do because they care and love you. Now, add those gestures throughout the day and week, and month, and wow!!!! What a way to be treated :-) (As you can tell, I can be easy like that and I am sensitive to such things).
Not that the big gestures don't matter, because they totally do as well :-)! Also, I loved his skin in the drama :-)... *Rave over :-)*

Hello Canxi :-)!!!!! I am sooo glad you joined the rave :-). He is worth raving over... And I agree with you, Ba Eul was a good one too :-).

0

Picture the scene in FBRS where the 3 of them were lying face up in bed with wife-y in the middle - which way would you roll over to snuggle/kiss ?

Wife-y and Pillar -yay!

Plus, somehow, abs are so much more buff on non-chaebols.

Aaaaawwww. Good for you, Lee Ki Woo. At least now we know this type of scenario is possible in dramaland. FBRS was one of the most ridiculous second-lead setups among the recent kdramas. Because LKW was perfect! I mean, really perfect. He wasn't even the typical annoying second lead who would follow the girl around like a dog. Now I won't feel as sorry for him anymore. He gets the "real" girl!

I hate it when short girls take tall guys! Hate it! Short girls can go for short guys AND tall guys, while us, tall girls, can only go for the few tall guys. And then a short gal comes along and takes one of our few-and-far-between targets! They are in short supply already! I can't date guys that are shorter than me, what will I do when I put heels on? (do not try to suggest they should wear shoelifts. Been there, done that!) Rant over! Carry on.....

Date short guys
because height isn't everything

or move to the Netherlands

She isn't even that short
she's 5'6?

now I am short (between 5'2 and 5'3)
so i guess you might want to throttle girls who are my height who date guys over 6 feet

Short girls like tall guys too
tall height in guys is considered an attractive trait universally and theres nothing wrong with short girls wanting to date tall guys

Dont hate :/
