Mystery Drama Theater 3000: Boys Before Flowers
by javabeans
In case you missed our first attempt at Mystery Drama Theater 3000, we’re bringing the concept back, only this time we’ve picked a less obscure show.
For our first outing we picked a show that was less-watched because we thought it would be nice to weigh in on something we hadn’t previously talked about. However, that also made the show harder to find, so for Numero 2 we’re going in the complete opposite direction (Dramabeans: The Land of Extremes and No In-Betweens!).
This time we’ve gone with a drama recognized by everybody and their mother (seriously, your mom’s probably seen it), which we’ve covered extensively on this here site: Boys Before Flowers, probably THE pop-culture sensation of 2009. It’s been a while since we’d seen the series, so it was an interesting experience to go back with somewhat new eyes and the benefit (?) of hindsight.
To watch:
- Download episode, pop the DVD into your player, or cue the file on a streaming site.
- Download our audio commentary file: Get Commentary [ Mirror ]
- Go ahead and start the audio track first; we’ll tell you when to press play so you can be in sync with the episode.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
And there you go! If you have suggestions for future MDT3K options, drop us a line in the comments.

Wow i really enjoy the film,BBF it's a well played film especially the actress Geum Jandi. But in season 1 the stargazer said Gun Ju Po is her future husband while Ji Hoo is her soul mate,it would have being better off if she can go for her soulmate

I think that you should do a podcast on running man. I'd love to see your take on some of the episdos. While all your recaps are good to read, it doesn't feel personal enough.

Oh and no matter how bad his acting, Ji hoo was so hot.
Next do something on playful kiss.

I LOVE LOVED your commentary, especially your take on the exposition of the drama! I admit, I love BOF because it is the first K-drama I watched and of course, there's LMH. But I share your views on the silliness of the drama yet there's something about it- a weird charm- that makes it so addictive! Geum Jan-di and Ji-Hoo were HUGE turn-offs though. LMH made it impossible for us to root for Ji-Hoo despite the whole soulmate thing. Ahhh! He was the only element that made me plod through the entire drama.

My first drama ever and even if I do agree with your comments about its flaws, I have to say that I loved it at the time because it was so silly (especially Jan-di and her family) and so different from what I was accustomed to watch.
Thanks for this and for all your amazing articles.

When I first started watching kdramas in 2010 this show was the one everybody was recommending. Being new to Korean shows, I thought the overacting by the female lead was normal. It took me over a year to finish because it was so CHEESY and cringeworthy; I couldn't believe the actors were able to keep a straight face while spewing those dialogues.
Reliving the first episode with JB & GF has confirmed that my initial reactions to this show were justified. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this was crap.

I loved this show.. i dont knw abt the japanese version and i dont know how one can criticise it.. i have no words to criticise it, not even a single one. I loved all the characters, i loved the way jan di and jun pyo are portrayed and i really loved the story. They were meant to be together they love each other and they are meant to be together forever. I really felt each and every feeling through which jan di and jun pyo went. And with each passing moment i prayed them to be together forever. And i am happy that at the end they are finally together. Its a beautiful love story. I loved it.
