Mandate of Heaven’s man on the run
by girlfriday
Huh. You know, this show just looks better and better. Lee Dong-wook’s new framed-father-on-the-run sageuk thriller Mandate of Heaven has released a teaser, and it’s short but dramatic fiery. And perhaps more importantly, it has the heart-pounding rhythm of a suspenseful thriller, which is a good sign. Ruuuuuuun, daddy, ruuuuuuuun!
Lee Dong-wook stars as a royal physician with an ailing daughter, who gets framed in an assassination plot against the king. Suddenly he finds himself a fugitive who has to save his daughter (Kim Yu-bin) and clear his name to have himself. I always love a good Wrong Man setup, and it looks like Lee Dong-wook is going to town playing the runaway hero.
Song Ji-hyo plays the nurse who’s in love with him, and Im Seul-ong is the suspicious crown prince who ends up thinking he was betrayed by the one person he trusted in the world. There are only tiny glimpses of Yoon Jin-yi as the bandit’s daughter who helps him on the road, and Song Jong-ho, the Euigeumbu detective who’s on the case to capture the hero, but so far everyone looks great in their roles. It’d be nice if the drama could manage to maintain this kind of dramatic suspense throughout. There’s a lot of sageuk this spring, but who knows, maybe this one will be the dark horse.
Mandate of Heaven premieres April 24 on KBS.

Same here! The last drama I watched was Arang I think... since I didn't finish Nice Guy. I'm so excited about this drama!
Question: Is Jihyo the female lead? I really hope so. But between girl-who-loves-male-lead and daughter-of-a-bandit-who-helps-male-lead... it just doesn't seem like Jihyo's character would be the female lead....

SJH is the female lead, but I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't end up with the main lead guy if ever. She never does. Lol.

You just cant go wrong with Song Ji-hyo in sageuks. She has done more sageuk than modern drama. I liked her in the movie "The Frozen Flower" eventhough the main focus was on Jo In-sung and Joo Jin-mo's characters.

Song Ji Hyo needs to get lines at least as good as her classic lines from Running Man:

I watched this trailer last night, and it looks really good. Like GF said, it would be awesome if they could maintain the dramatic suspense throughout the drama (and have other elements as well) and keep it to the end. Well, I guess we will find out when we watch it.
They seem to make a point of telling us how dark the drama might be, what with the running away at night and how dark (as in obscure) some of the visuals are. Another drama to check out in the Spring. So many dramas, so little time.

Ever since I first read about this plot, this has been the sageuk I thought would take the cake this season. It just seems to have all the right stuff. I love it when a show has a simple tight plot that doesn't require a lot of "ands" (and she gets amnesia, and he's actually her half brother, and the man she thought was her father isn't really, and his family loses their fortune, and she's a math genius, and he has a doppleganger, etc....).
This show has all the tension it needs in its tight, simple premise. I'm really excited. Please don't let me down!

So excited! I love me some sageuk (as evidenced by my undying love for both The Princess' Man and Tree with Deep Roots). But recently the sageuk fare hasn't been altogether that great. Great King's Dream and War of the Flowers weren't really my thing. So I was hoping either Jang Ok Jung or Mandate of Heaven would be good. But if it's based on trailer alone, it looks like Mandate is going to be pretty awesome. *Fingers crossed!

I think the younger generation prefer shorter and less traditional sageuks like The Princess Man and Tree With Deep Roots. Great King's Dream and War of the Flowers are long and more traditional, geared more for the older folks. Thats probably why they are shown during the weekends.
I still prefer the more traditional sageuks because they dont stray too far from the real history and I very much like reading about Korea and the history of its people.

I agree with your statement that younger people tend to like the shorter fusion sageuks more, but that's not why I'm not watching Great King's dream and War of the Flowers. I am a fan of the long running sageuks, and have seen quite a bit in my time since I don't need subs-the original Huh Joon, Sangdo, Dae jang geum, Jang Heebin, Daewang Sejong, Queen Seonduk, Dong yi. I just mean the two long running sageuks out at the moment haven't captured my interest.

Fogive me I misunderstood the first part of your post. QSD is still fresh in my mind so I wasn't ready for another 3 kingdom era sageuk. I'm watching War of the Flowers because I love writer Jung Ha Yun's previous sageuks especially Shin Don. So far I'm loving it and I probably will watch all 50 eps since I dont have any drama on my watch list.

I'm watching for that little girl. She is the cutest thing ever, and such a good little actress. She makes my ovaries want babies. Who remembers her in Hurray for Love (the curls... and dialect) and Oh My Lady (the quiet defiance)?
Aside: I know Oh My Lady wasn't the best but I watched it for Siwon and Chae Rim, separately. Him cuz well, he's hot and her because Dalja's Spring was the first Chae Rim drama I saw and I loooovveeed that drama. Ever since then, I can watch anything she's in. Even if it's the equivalent of her painting a wall.
More aside: AND ever since Faith, this has extended to her brother. He was so wonderfully self serving and evil. Loved how he played, or tried to play, everyone.

He was such fun to hate in Faith. Every time he came on screen I was like "Jesu, what is this one up to now?" And yes, it's definitely there, the resemblance. I notice it a lot now that I'm watching him on a daily basis in Your Woman. You might not notice the resemblance in Faith. The actors tend to look so diff between historical and modern. Case in point, Lee Dong-wook in the first image above. I still don't think that's him...

Dong Wook oppa has grown a lot acting wise, hasnt he? I was rewatching My Girl yesterday for the umpteenth time and the rewatches have helped me to see all the faults of the drama including the crappy acting. But Lee Dong Wook has come a long way from there. Still, My Girl introduced me to the world of Kdramas. So will stay partial to it

Good news on the female characters, aside from the cute baby girl: the "warrior woman" is stabbing someone like she means it, instead of looking like she's posing for promo stills; Song Ji Hyo is doing some serious emoting, instead of having to play the stoic, as she was stuck doing in other dramas.

I really like the preview! I've always liked well-made suspense thrillers and this one seems to get the tone right. Sageuk's not my favorite genre but if this preview is any indication of the drama itself, it definitely feels taut and engaging.
And it doesn't hurt at all when my bias LDW is the man on the run here. Think JB once said something along the lines of him more of an actor who'd like to go deeper and darker and only surface for lighter fairs to pay the bill. I too get this vibe from the guy. And what a gorgeous face he has (okay, here's the shallow bit :-) )!

Could be if the writing is good too but I've never heard of these writers. This is also helmed by the director of Baby faced beauty and Birth of the rich. The actors are solid but the team behind it has never done a sageuk project before.
I'm hoping this will end being a hit from an unknown writer like "Queen In-hyun's Man.

Song Jong Ho must have actually been a Joseon police office because he always looks so dashing in that uniform. Also, I love stories with kids in it so hopefully the daughter is a character who gets screen time.
I'm exciiiiiiiiiited....I just have to remind myself that sageuks, especially dramatic sageuks mean lots and lots of death. I will take the remaining time till the premiere to prepare myself for the blood.
