Lee Shi-young earns spot on national boxing team
by javabeans
How cool is this? Lee Shi-young, who took up amateur boxing a few years ago, has now qualified to be part of South Korea’s national boxing team. Dude. That’s awesome. I recall reading headlines that she was hoping to make the Olympic team, and now she’s one step closer to that goal.
Lee Shi-young, age 31, won her match in the final round for the national team tryouts on April 24 against her 19-year-old opponent (score 22-20). She’s the first celebrity to become a national team athlete for any sport. She competed in the 48kg weight class (Flyweight) but plans to compete at this year’s nationals in October in the 51kg category, since there is no 48kg class at the Asian Games.
All this while filming movies and doing the whole actress rigamarole as well; her last movie was rom-com Men: An Operating Manual (or How To Operate a Man), which performed fairly well at the box office and generated positive word of mouth.
I think it’s pretty remarkable that Lee Shi-young has made it all the way to national athlete status having only begun the sport in 2010, in preparation for a drama role. And even then it wasn’t that her Playful Kiss character even used those skills onscreen, but (if I recall correctly) that she used boxing to get into shape. She found herself enjoying the sport and kept up with it, and must’ve just had a natural aptitude for it. Congrats to her, however far she advances from here!

I did not like this actress in the first dramas I saw her in, she just seemed so very 'plastic' for lack of a better term, and then, wow, she was just so out there in Wild Romance, I had to give her props. And then I found out she was a boxer, and serious about it and that blew me away. Mad, mad, -cannot love her enough for her ovular fortitude- be who she wants to be -props to this woman. Congrats and good luck!

LUUUUURRRRVE her!
I'm glad I'm not her agent, though. What a nervous wreck s/he must be every time Lee Shi Young has a match. Ha!
Way to go, chica!

I remember seeing some of her boxing skills on Wild Romance. That may have been the only impressive thing to see on that show...other than Lee Dong-Wook's face.

Wow!!! She made it to national team! Congrats! I though she will never make it since Shea's just a runner up last year, but it doesn't stop her passion. I wish her all the luck, and yet I miss her now doing her drama series. How I wish she could make another rom com before the match.....but I just realize that she has to gain 3 kg more for her division? I hope she will be fine.

I don't thing she has to gain weight to fight above her weight class, but an additional few kilos of muscle and curve won't do her body any harm.
I enjoyed Li Si Young in both 'Posiedon' and 'Wild Romance'--she has a wonderfully agile face and body and it is too bad that her performances and those of the other actors were wasted by live shoots and writing collapse in both dramas.

She looked so improbable when they introduced her as an "Amazon" on Running Man, which made it hilarious when the male characters took off like rabbits at the sound of that soft voice of hers saying "Hello?"
Then, of course, her competitive side came out and she kept showing her strength even when she was trying not to, particularly when she basically picked Jae Suek up and through him bodily into the mud of Incheon. At least he'll be able to to tell people he lost at wrestling to a national athelete.

Yeah I watched that episode in Running Man, and I can't for get the image that she projected when they introduce her as an amazon woman because she looks more like an innocent angel when she smile plus her soft voice! Hahaha! Actually thanks to her I started watching running man episodes when I just tried watching her in RM

Ironically, LSY may be the only national athlete in Korea who finds prepping for the Olympics more restful than her day job. 4 am road work after a night's sleep has to be better for your health than 20 hour days of live shoot for a drama.

"..against her 19-year-old opponent (score 22-20).."
There was actually a lot of controversy about that win in the Korean press and in Asian boxing circles. I have no idea if it was true or not, but the judges were accused of giving points for beauty & celebrity status over skill.
Even if true, I cannot blame her, and I think she has done pretty good to get as far as she has given her age. I don't follow boxing at all, but looked it up and supposedly the peak years are 24-26.
