Lee Jong-hyuk headlines next tvN Flower Boy series

First of all, there’s a new Flower Boy drama on the way. Rejoice! And… Lee Jong-hyuk is headlining? Now, I LOVE me some Lee Jong-hyuk, but don’tcha think he’s more flower ajusshi than boy? The fourth installment of the Oh Boy series for cable network tvN will be Cyrano Dating Agency — and yes, it’s the same agency that Uhm Tae-woong once ran in the movies. He’ll be playing that same character, and is probably a better fit for the smooth-talking puppetmaster of romance, though of course he becomes his own worst enemy when it comes to his own love life. If this is the result of Lee Jong-hyuk dropping I Summon You, Gold, then I think that makes him the winner. Also me.
The movie starred Uhm Tae-woong as the leader of an unusual dating agency that was less about finding you a match and more about inventing scenarios wherein a bumbling fool (Daniel Choi) could look really cool in front of the girl of his dreams (Lee Min-jung). But in true Cyrano de Bergerac fashion, it was the man behind the romance/poetry/wind machines who really loved the girl, and he had to wrestle with helping another man win over the love of his life.
The drama will be based on a webtoon that’s the prequel to the movie, so basically we’re backing up to get the origin story of the dating agency. I don’t know how closely it’ll stick to the film, but we’ll have to catch up to that timeline eventually, or create a parallel one with an alternate course. Lee Jong-hyuk stars as the hero, Seo Byung-hoon, who puts his once-day-job skills as a masterful play producer to use in creating this bizarre dating agency that orchestrates romantic scenarios for paying clients, all in an effort to raise enough money to save an old theater. It’s like instead of just hiring one Cyrano, you get a highly efficient team complete with stage props.
Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung has been cast as one of the members of the dating agency (Gong Min-young, Park Shin-hye’s role in the movie). Lee Chun-hee will play a character that wasn’t in the movie — a man with a mysterious past and the chef of the restaurant that’s next door to the theater where the dating agency is housed.
It’ll be a 16-episode rom-com, from the director of the romantic comedy Happy Ending or Die, and one of the writers of Tamra The Island. I’ve always wanted Cyrano Dating Agency to be a drama (the episodic potential with the various romantically-challenged clients is endless), so I’m looking forward to the adaptation. Now it almost seems like Lee Jong-hyuk’s cameo in Flower Boy Next Door was some kind of carefully planned hidden clue, like a baton-pass from one Flower Boy drama to the next and from Park Shin-hye, who was in Cyrano. Let’s just say it was.
Cyrano Dating Agency follows current Monday-Tuesday drama Nine and premieres in May.

Ditto! Personally I have quite a bit of faith the in team since they're behind the Flower Boy franchise so whatever it is it couldn't possibly downright terrible (Read: L7CS,Dr.Jin,Fashion King) unless both the writer and producer nims suddenly go gaga without any valid reason. I'll take my chances with this one. I have to say,Soo Young is actually the best actress out of SNSD. I've seen her in 3rd Hospital and although she wasn't phenomenal she did a pretty convincing job in making me feel for character. Well this drama isn't part of the flower boy franchise but it's all right,tvN has a pretty good track record with me so far,and this will be my 8th tvN drama after Nine. tvN drama has spawned 2 of my favourite dramas of all time that is Shut Up Flower Boy Band and Queen In Hyun's Man,so I have high expectations for this one. We have Lee Chun Hee and Lee Jong Hyuk! Adored Chun Hee in Family Outing so this would be my first drama of his(yes I'm pretty late on the Chun Hee bandwagon,it seems but I suppose better late than never,eh?). Jong Hyuk was a hoot on A Gentleman's Dignity and also he's been getting laughs out of me through Dad Where Are You Going as well (omg I love that show!) so I'm glad that I can get to see him in another drama HEH. Watched the movie Cyrano Dating Agency and felt that it was pretty decent.(To be honest,I totally watched it for Uhm Tae Woong :p)

The disease you are looking for is inflated egos becoming more important than the story. AKA Horse Doctor disease. (In which I wanted to slap some common sense into the producer, director and writer to stop putting their "signatures" all over it and focus on telling a good story instead.)
Quirks are fine. Deliberately increasing it to make sure everyone knows it's you to the detriment of the story isn't.
That's the only way I could see them screw up. But TvN has some solid dramas. So I'll trust them.

She floored me in The 3rd Ward, even if the drama was so-so. She's one of the few natural actresses amongst the idols. In fact, if she could stop being an idol and if she would become a full time actress, that would be awesome! And I'm harsh when it comes to judging actresses...

I am a little prejudiced here... I like Sooyoung as a person and part of GG but for me she sometimes fails to deliever as an entertainer on stage and hence I was/am sceptical, without ever having seen her in a drama, whether she's capable of portraying a character on screen.

Idols aren't bad actors by definition. You should really take a look at Third Hospital. She was surprisingly good (not brilliant, mind you, but very very decent) and I really hope that once she gets all the singing/dancing out of her system she'll pursue an acting career.

I never said idols are automatically bad actors. There are quite a couple of them that are quite, if not very, capable. Still, I sometimes find her stage performances to be uninspired and seeing that acting is another medium to transmit emotions it's not that far off to be afraid that she might be just as blank.
But hey, I am willing to be surprised and the better she is the happier I am, as a viewer.
I'll check Third Hospital out and maybe it will land on my list... just behind the other twenty-or-so dramas. :)

I read how the cast on The 3rd Ward praised Sooyoung's acting but I thought they were just being nice.

Exactly! I was pretty floored when I discovered that she can actually act,and was pretty decent at that. She should totally consider becoming an actress full time. And that,coming from a person who's been real skeptical of SNSD member's acting (and rightly so if you see the mediocre acting from the most of them),is quite something to consider.

I really like her as part of SNSD but I wasn't sure how she'd be as an actress (I've only seen her cameo in A Gentleman's Dignity and am still torn on whether she was meant to be as meh as she was for that minute)....though I quite liked Yoona from episode 5 onwards of Love Rain so I'm willing to be open-minded about her bandmate.

WAE? She was pretty good in it! She acted her part as a patient very convincingly,and if you compare with the rest of the SNSD members who branched out into the acting venture she's actually the best one out there. Her acting is natural instead of the usual stiff unnatural demeanor that we'd expect from a SNSD member. Just saying. Adored her in 3rd Hospital although the last episode made me wanna strangle the writer nim.

I'm not into k-pop so I didn't know anything about her before The 3rd Hospital. and seriously, I liked her acting so much in that drama that I was actually surprised when I found out that she was an idol. she's got great potential as an actress!
Thus I can't wait for cyrano dating agency - the drama version! :)

I know it's a bit iffy about idol acting on dramas but actually, she is WAAAAYYYY better than other girls' generation members that tried acting! I am not dissing on girls' generation because I, myself, is a big fan of the group. But seriously, Sooyoung is good because I watched Third Hospital and she was good in that movie :)

I am torn: I love the cast (the 3 of them) and I like the premise, but I've learnt with FBND that you can't improvise yourself as a drama writer (a webtoon artist is not enough...). I guess that's why here they took the writer of Tamra in the team: You need to balance the screentime for the characters and there is a rythm to respect if you don't want your audience to get bored.
I will check it out since it's not like we are drowning in rom-coms but I won't stick to it if it goes to lalaland.

Sooyoung was good in 3rd Hospital so I don't mind seeing her being apart of the cast, I would've cringed if it was any of the other SNSD girls though.
I actually haven't watch the whole film yet, I started watching it and then fell asleep LOL. I'm just happy to see Lee Chun Hee on-screen again.

Yay! A new Flower Boys drama - I always thought tvN was only planning on having three instalments in this series but I suppose the success they had changed their minds.
I can't say I am thrilled by the premise of having a Flower Ahjusshi and Sooyoung cast in leading/important roles - nor am I a fan of dating agency setups - but hey, it's from the channel which produced Shut Up:FFB, Flower Boy Ramyun Shop and the first ten episodes of Flower Boy Next Door, hence I will trust them to rock this one as well. I am excited and looking forward to it!

I like him, and I loved flower boy next door...so i am in. Sooyoung seems nice to me, i find her so pretty and adorable, even when i haven't watched her in anything, that i agree with her being casted :)
On a side note, Yoon Shi Yoo, ie Enrique, wasn't nominated for any award in the Paesang's (???)...I'm sad for him, he did an excellent job u.u

This is really exciting for me.
I didn't watch any of the Flower 'Boy' series (hate that term) but Lee Jong Hyuk and Lee Chun Hee ... especially Lee Chun Hee ... are always worth watching no matter what they do.
Here's to hoping they elevate whatever inane material they're bound to be given.

I did watch 3rd Hospital and Soo young was actually believable. So I don't mind her in this. Im interested due to the romcom aspect and the male leads announced but I just hope its not as boring as the last flower boy series or even the Cyrano movie...

Oooooo, I wonder who the OTP will be played by. Exciting! I really loved that movie. It gave me the warm fuzzies all over.
Also! It's nice to see Lee Chun Hee in a full length drama again :D He was in all these specials. I understand though, he has a family now! *proud tear*

I like all 3 of the leads, which is a rare thing for me. LOL
And I love the fact that Sooyoung was cast. She was surprisingly good in The 3rd Hospital. I don't think anyone expected her to perform as well as she did. I love her, and she's my Soshi fave, but I was legit impressed that she can actually act. I do hope she pursues acting more because she's more than decent as is and will only get better even more. :)

Lee Jong Hyuk is awesome but I'm not sure whether I'll watch another version of Cyrano Dating Agency because even though the film is enjoyable, it's nowhere exciting to worth watching the 2nd time.
But since this is a drama adaptation of the original webtoon, I'll be looking forward for more differences. I also have faith in TVN dramas and this flower boy series. The cast looks good so far, Lee Jong Hyuk and Lee Chun Hee all have the same dorky vibe about them.
On a side note: I totally love LJH's son Lee Jun Su in the variety show "Appa, where are you going", I hope this drama don't interfere with the show filming schedule.

Well, this just may be the first Flower Boy show I like (I have yet to see Shut Up!) as both Ramen Shop and Next Door disappointed me. But, I liked the Cyrano movie, so this already has a head start on getting on my good side. And I like Lee Jong Hyuk, so yay to that, too.

I enjoyed the movie, but it did leave me wanting more story in regards to the agency. I can't wait for this drama! I hope we get to see more than one match being made. I hope we get to hear him sing. His rendition of If You Come Into My Heart on AGD was totally swoonworthy! I've listened to various versions and I think the natural tone of his voice suits the song the best and brings out the sexy.
Has anyone ever watched Romance Zero? It had a group of misfit matchmakers plus the main character who used to be a top matchmaker until he got demoted due to a bad match? While the main characters didn't get as much development as I would have liked, drama had some wonderful storylines and a sneering, ineffectual villain who was hilarious.
