Hwang Jung-min and Kim Yun-jin headline new movie

The director of Haeundae is returning with his first film in four years — a drama called International Market, which is not the most exciting title on the block, but it’s scored Hwang Jung-min (Fist of Legend, Penninsula) and Kim Yun-jin (Neighbors, Lost) to star. They’ll play a married couple that we’ll watch go from their twenties into their seventies, as a way to chart the way the economy changed over the course of fifty years. It’s an interesting concept, and almost sounds like documentary material.
Hwang Jung-min and Kim Yun-jin star as two young sweethearts (and first loves, natch) who get married at a young age, and Oh Dal-soo (The Gift of Room 7) co-stars as Hwang Jung-min’s best friend. We’ll see the couple age as we catch up to the present day, and in the process watch the economy change with the tide. The actors will play their roles from twenty to seventy, which will be a fun thing to watch too.
Director Yoon Je-kyun was influenced by his parents’ generation and the harsh poverty they fought to overcome, saying that it was a story he’s been wanting to tell for some time. I like the idea of covering fifty years of history through the lens of one couple, because it remains personal. Even if the movie is technically about the economy, there’s an emotional hook there if we’re invested in their journey. Perhaps not action-packed on paper, but I do think it’ll make for an interesting movie.
International Market is planning for a release later this year.

Sounds interesting. Reminds me a little of the kbs drama special like a fairytale, but whereas the events going on over the years of the couple's relationship was a subtle backdrop and the focus was on the couple's personal issues, I guess the movie will make the backdrop more prominent.
Also, hwang jung min is another huge draw for me. :)

Sounds interesting but kinda forgettable. I mean, unless it's brought up in DB repeatedly, I just might end up forgetting it existed, ha.

Kim Yun-jin touted as the "Korean Julia Roberts".
Kim Yun-jin is best known in the English-speaking world for her role as Sun - Hwa Kwon on the ABC (American Broadcasting Company) television series Lost (September 22, 2004 – May 23, 2010) which ran for 6 season with 121 episodes.

I wonder if this will be similar to 'Giant' in a way and in movie form. We have a large period of time, marked by rapid changes in the financial sector (even though that was more about the development of Seoul) and a personal touch of people living through it.
It is just lacking the revenge and villain angle, which is not necessarily a bad thing, since focusing on the bigger issues rather than one personal problem sounds just as interesting if done well. Plus, revenge is best when done slowly, so a drama works better than a film in that regard.
Hwang Jung Min had has his hits and misses with his recent movies, as far as I'm concerned, but this sounds interesting nonetheless.

S Korea has changed so very much in the past 50 years. It became one of the 4 Asian Tigers to outperform the rest in large manufacturing sectors, like shipbuilding and construction, to electrical and electronic engineering, to what we know it as today. It'd be great to have a docu-drama on this subject, with a very watchable couple at the center. A must-watch in my book!

Reminds me of Gong Li's film "To Live" -- it follows a couple for 40 years or so, showing how the family's fortunes changed through the time that includes the Cultural Revolution. I really liked that film. I think this film could be just as engaging on emotional and historical levels.

Wonder how Yunho having a cameo role in this movie. Not looking forward to seeing him as an actor. His last drama was pain to watch.Felt sorry for the other casts. Hope this is just a minor role for him
