Gu Family Book’s half-gumiho rises

girlfriday: So, the posters are finally out for Gu Family Book

javabeans: A poster is just a poster, right? It doesn’t mean anything or set a negative tone or portend doom or anything?

girlfriday: *awkward pause* *dodges question* Look, a squirrel!

javabeans: Because I dunno about you, but suddenly I’m a lot more nervous about things to come in this drama. Because if a poster is not merely a random piece of artwork, now I have to prepare myself mentally for glowing omniscient cat eyes of doom, flesh-eating diseases, and martial arts sequences punctuated by swooshy sound effects. I’m just not ready for that.

girlfriday: You’re forgetting the all-important storyline where apparently being a gumiho gives you really bad hair.

javabeans: From some angles (okay, just the one) Seung-gi looks pretty good. From all other angles, he looks like Chia Seung-gi. Except that I’m afraid to water him after midnight when he turns into Chia Gremlin.

girlfriday: He’s not… really going to look like this in the drama, right?

javabeans: …Do you want the happy answer, or the true one?

girlfriday: The happy one, naturally.

javabeans: Then no, the promos and stills and previews are all wrong. He will be simultaneously hot and adorable in the drama, which has zero chance of sucking. Even if Great Gatsby is watching. Waiting. Being totally inconspicuous like a good lurking hellbeast.

girlfriday: Yeah thanks for that. This is why I hate it when posters get released so late in the game. You get all excited based on a few stills of puppy in a ponytail, and then Wham! They hit you with the overzealous gumiho photoshop. I don’t know when he’s going to find time to fall in love and learn martial arts if he’s going to be so busy drinking blood, eating brains, and finding a cure for his necrosis.

javabeans: Well, if we’re going to have a zombie doppelganger loose on our hands, it seems fitting that he’d be hungry for human organs. Though admittedly, “Liverrrrr” doesn’t have the same ring as “Braiiiins.”

girlfriday: Who knows, maybe he’ll only want Cooooooow.

javabeans: Maybe he’ll buck the trend and be a vegetarian zombie half-gumiho Chia-Hero.

girlfriday: That would explain why he looks half-dead.

javabeans: Fingers crossed that the show’s half-decent.

girlfriday: Or someone eats our brains.

javabeans: I don’t like these odds.

I liked the filming stills but the posters seem to be painting a very ominous tone :( I thought it was gonna be happy and comedic and Lee Seung Gi-ish and all but now... :<
Very curious as to why Suzy is looking like a Damsel in Distress in the second poster though. Shouldn't she be looking tough and all cos y'know, Daddy knows martial arts? I'm getting weird vibes from the posters.

I know it's not a comedy, but that first poster made me laugh out loud. I wished they hadn't placed those glowing eyes just so - they are too close to his head, and it looks like he has glowing bunny ears. And what has been seen, cannot be unseen: demented SG rabbit.

It's honestly not that weird. The gumiho half is supposedly evil and cursed (since Mamma Kang Chi ends up dead I'm assuming...) and Suzy should avoid at all cost, but then we'll figure out that the humans are the bad ones (since the guy doing everything bad is actually human) and what makes you human is not actually being human but acting like one... blah blah blah.

I don't know why Dramabeans ladies skip the long trailer and just talk about the posters..

Watch the long trailer, and you will see this drama will have it's dose of comedy, action and melo.

Of course, if we need to go by the posters, Seunggi's half beast image doesn't look that exciting. But is look more important than the story? I'm disappointed. I love the trailer and was looking forward to hear what Girlfriday has to say about it and the press conference.

I think this drama is going to be a mix of everything- drama, fantasy, comedy, romance, and action. Sort of like Arang. I think it is great to tell a story not limited to just one or two genres. And from Suzy and Lee Seung Gi's cheesy smiles in the third pic, there will definitely be some funny involved. Of course, given that the hero's half gumiho and no one in sageuk Korea likes gumihos...and he has also been raised as a normal human...there will be angst when he realizes he is the creature that he has heard bad things about and when people start hunting him. As for Suzy looking damsel-in-distress...we do have her looking like a fighter in one of the posters, so i think it is okay to have her prettied up for fan service.

I SEE SUNG JOON IN BLACK WARRIOR COSTUME UNF

I liked the teaser for this, for once Lee Yeon-hee didn't annoy me with her blandness.....but then Jang Ok Jung has also gone and put out a trailer in which its leads actually seem to have chemistry, there's a chance there'll be a ratings fight now (if it isn't too late to convince people to watch your show after all the previous promo material was so shoddy, that is)

And maybe the ajummas won't want to hear a version of the Jang Hee Bin story where Jang Ok Jung is the heroine and the beloved Queen Inhyun is the villain? and then they decide to tune in to watch the nation's favorite son-in-law.

Regardless of the posters, I have faith in puppy. He always chooses the right projects. Besides, I think the only problem with gumiho seunggi is that it was overly air brushed...I mean..they can't possibly airbrush a video right...? Or can they use CG for it? I kinda have a feeling that Suzy's character is gonna be real bad ass in the beginning but then slowly turn into a damsel in distress (and loses her spunk..). This is based on what I see in the 2nd poster. But still, I have very high hopes for this drama. Gu family secret fighting!

Thanks for the trailer links

LIKES:
- Chemistry between Seung Gi and Suzy seems fantastic.
- Liked the chemistry between the parents too
- Love the lighting and cinematography from what I saw in the trailer

DISLIKES:
- OMG, Seung Gi has to be one of the worst at action sequences I've ever seen. He looks like he literally has no idea what he's doing in a fight. And everything seems to be going in 1/2 motion for him while everyone else is trying to slow down from full motion and can only slow down to 3/4 motion.

Overall, I'll probably wait and see how others evaluate it to see if it's worth the time. I want to like the drama, but man, oh, man, those "action" sequences were cringe-worthy. Every single one of them.

Required fields are marked *

Jeez, its a trailer, they showed mostly highlighted action scenes, which is mostly in slo-mo, dont judge before u watch the whole thing. Even the director said he was impressed with SG's action acting, even it at was his 1st action drama, so it shouldnt be bad.

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's part of the problem. It's the highlighted ones. I couldn't find one sequence which looked even passable. If those are supposed to be the best, I can't even imagine what the not as good ones look like.

Of course, it's quite possible that they just happened to show the really bad ones, but I wouldn't bet on it.

There's just something about Lee Seung Gi's movements which don't look natural at all when he's moving through the action scenes.

I trust my eyes than what the director says. After all, what is he going to say "Man, LSG was pretty bad, but he got a little better with a little coaching?"

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't think the director has much of an action background (unless you count the action school bits in Secret Garden, but he was lucky both to have ha ji won and stunt doubles) anyways and given how many mini series end up in live shoots, I doubt he will take the time to make sure everyone gets their action moves to look natural. unfortunately, I feel like actors who can do these sort of moves naturally are slim in kdramas. Idols can probably do them well enough given that they are always being physically and mentally pushed to learn new moves in a short period of time and to do them as if it is second nature. Arang lucked out with lee jun ki having a martial arts background.

0

How can you judge an action "scene" when the trailer only showed a couple of seconds of any given "scene"? He wasn't even fighting bad guys in the trailer and more like hooligans-who-will-be-his-entourage-come-finale or something.

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

There's a certain style of movement where you can see how natural something looks.

Very few of the moves that LSG made in the action scenes of the trailer looked natural. They almost all looked staged or acted out.

I'll admit that I'm pretty picky about these sort of things, so if you're not used to seeing these types of movements by watching a lot of action flicks or doing martial arts, maybe they'll work for you.

I'm just giving my opinion as an action-lover and martial artist, that the movements look fake to my practiced eye.

Feel free to disregard if you want.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Of course they're fake. DUH. Are you seriously banking on action scenes that look too organic and raw? You're looking at the wrong drama.

0

I'm looking for the actor to not look awkward when doing his action sequences, so that I can suspend disbelief that he actually is this larger than life half-gumiho character.

Unless, he's a half-gumiho character who's SUPPOSED to look awkward when fighting or running around toying with the people chasing him.

In that case, then, he fits very well into the character.

And as I stated earlier, I agree with you that I might be looking at the wrong drama as it's caused me to re-think whether I want to watch it.

0

Er, responding to your other posts... I think you have the wrong expectations. He's not a gumiho yet. If you read the description is says it awakens after a certain event. He's not suppose to be a super powered kung fu fighting machine in the first episode he appears in. He's just a normal guy there screwing around. Though I still don't see anything awkward or bad about the scenes.

0

I wonder if they'll take care of that in post production. As an example, in Iljimae some of the things that the actors did during fight scenes had a noticeable appearance of being done at super-human speed. Also, I remember seeing an interview where LMH said one of the challenges he had in Faith was the awkwardly slow speeds they asked the actors to achieve when shooting some of the action sequences.

It'll be interesting to see if in the finished product, LSG's leaps will appear higher (with that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon floatiness) and body movements will appear more efficient and dramatic.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's possible, I guess.

He just looked very awkward in the action sequences.

Most of the CTHD effects though were not done through post-production, but with wire-work (which a lot of kdramas use for sage-uk fantasy fights, e.g. Hong Gil Dong).

So, I'd be very surprised if they looked significantly better after post-production.

I hope to be surprised, but I wouldn't count on it.

0

Required fields are marked *

I guess I know nothing about this because I love Seunggi's action scenes in the trailer. Too bad for you..

0

Required fields are marked *

Really? I don't think so. Most K 'action' dramas that I've watched are all the same - slow mo, so I don't see any difference here.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

agreee! most of k-drama when there's action scenes, some are slow-mo and some are fast-paced. i think because the director want to show the half-human half-beast power, that's why he choose to do the slow-mo instead of fast-paced. If it's fast-paced, who could notice that?

*just a thought :)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's not the slo mo thing that's bothering me. It's that to me he looks awkward when moving around in the action sequences.

I feel like I can see him literally thinking through each step of what he needs to do to get the scene filmed. It's like he's going through a mental checklist of each move he's making rather than something organic.

So for example,

Step on this rock (check), jump to railing (check), land on this platform (check).

Kind of like how when we critique actors like SSH of thinking how he's supposed to change his facial expressions to show emotion so that the audience can feel it, only for action sequences.

And when we the audience members can actually see the process in his acting and it feels like they're acting rather than are the part themselves.

0

Required fields are marked *

well said, but i hope you're not forgetting that this is his first action drama~ aren't you expecting that-kind-of-flaws-that-only-your-eyes-saw-it? others and i also like it though. i don't see any mental checklists and stuffs. what i can see is he's trying his best.

I think it has more to do with the baser instinct of being a half gumiho, He might not be in full control of gumiho part in the beginning since he only knows about it when he grows up and will be forced to deal with it. I agree with above comment that this drama that this drama show that a non-human can be more of a human than regular people.
And I hope suzy will be kick ass throughout regardless of second poster , that poster might only be showing her emotional vulnerability regarding kang chi and his struggle.

There is so much wrong with those posters, ESPECIALLY the burning eyes one where Suzy and Seung Ki are grinning. What is THAT about? And the trailer . . .the backstory looked interesting, then Seung Ki's battle skills looked goofy but not like intentionally funny goofy (because if that's what they were going for, it would need like wacky music and and more hamming it up). I have officially gone from "this could be really cute" to "oh I . . .can't . . . even". Fingers crossed that this show has something that can't be abbreviated into a 5 minute promo (and that whoever did these posters was fired for completely missing the mark).

That's what we all said about TK2H--Remember when we thought that drama would just completely tank because all the previews were crappy? Well, it turned out to be pretty good end.

For now, I have faith in Lee Seung Gi to at least choose a decent drama, or a meh drama that's a ratings juggernaut (Brilliant Legacy.) Honestly, half of what he touches turns gold in all aspects of his career, so I'm hoping for the best.

Shitty Hunter got shitty at the end when all the focus went to Kim Nana. Another action drama wasted by some love story Romeo and Juliet crap.

Yeah, but all of the Shitty Hunter's focus was all about Nana. It started out great until Nana came to the picture.

Haha I hated the love story in CH. I would have liked it had he not turned into such a softy. I guess I'm like bad daddy...

Why would he want to become a human if there is no negative side of being a gumiho? The evil eye fits the premise perfectly.

Hmm, considering the only reason I was going to be watching this was for that kid leaning against a tree there who has shown up in ONE POSTER of all the promo material, I am rethinking things a bit.

Than don't watch it. Just wait on youtube for the compilation of his scenes after the drama is finished.

I agree with you franz. My advice to chaosgirl - Don't watch the drama. You will be disappointed. If he was the lead or even second lead, his pic will appear more and he'll have more air time and lines. Pls be rational. This is NOT his drama - he was slotted in almost at the last minute. if you want to see more of him, then do as franz suggested or rewatch his other cable dramas.

Wow, how did they manage to mess up these posters? In the first one, it looks like Seunggi grew a potbelly. What!?? Why is this cute puppy (who lost 3 kg recently) showing a potbelly?? lol

And the second poster, he looks so old....what are they doing to puppy??!

That being said, I'm still waiting to check it out. If it's too cynical, then we'll see...hwaiting!

That trailer had all the energy and originality of a high school class project. Suzy still has only two expressions: "big smile" and "blank." But I've got faith in LSG's taste in scripts and I hope this show rocks.

Someone needs to know how to get his hair right. I think it's his head shape or something. Or maybe he has real thick hair like my mom and it's just hard to cut without it looking like a disaster zone.

No, his natural hair is very smooth and looks great, it just the wig and too much gel I guess.

Action sequence cringe-worthy. Suzy dead fish eyes creep me out. Looks like a cheesy wuxia. Still hoping.

I was hoping he'll look cooler and meanier in gumiho form :(, with his hair down and torn clothes to plus. Geez, why do they have to put the gray hair on him??? That looks so freakin old ! Hix, I was pretty content about the normal outfit and then BAM, they dissappointed me like this! I hope it will look better in the drama, SG isnt so photogenic after all.

I'm probably in the minority when I say that I'm not troubled by the posters. They look fine to me and I do like the supernatural evil look on Seung-gi. I'll be watching this drama because it gives some vibes of Arang and the Magistrate which I loved.

I'm with you Day Dreamer! 'Never judge a book by it's cover'? - in this case, its never judge a drama by it's poster or even trailers! I remember the TK2H trailer which was very bleak and boring, but the drama was absolutely daebak! But I also do not want to hype this drama too much either! Personally, I love the trailer, but I do not like the 'gumiho' version of Kang Chi.

I find the 5min preview to be quite enjoyable. To those questioning the action scenes, those guys seem like a fodder bunch trying to catch a goofy seung gi causing trouble. Hence the lightheartedness in those scenes. My biggest issue is Suzy's acting..she seems to have that same blank expression throughout the preview. I'm hoping she pulls do and at least do a decent job. I was afraid Seung gi might begin overacting again but the beautiful last scene proved that he hasn't lost his acting chops yet.
Now the posters...I don't know...too much airbrushing and looks extremely fake and dark. I loved all their poses in last poster but the editing D:
Can't wait to see both Jang ok Jung and Gu family book and the showdown b/w the nation's mother's friend's son and the nation's mother's friend's daughter.

Well, if he turns into a vegetarian zombie half-gumiho Chia-Hero, wouldn't he eat his own hair each time it regrows?

OK. I accept, but then we would have a balding vegetarian zombie half-gumiho Chia-Hero.

I'd gotta honest.
The action scene, is aBIT MEH. No matter how much I love Seung Gi, but it's not that decent. Well, I understand since he did the most by his own, and I know he enrolled to action school for this drama. I'm waiting for his improvement, and I believe he will:)
The poster is YUCK, no more no less.
And from 5 minutes trailer.. I can see veryclearly who put more effort. Hopefully the other side able to balance the act well as the time goes by

I am actually hoping that the drama has a more serious tone (they can go some many places with the subject matter!), but if there is a compromise then I hope that the comedic and serious moments blend organically. And I wouldn't worry about zombie gumihos Girlfriday and Javabeans. Perhaps all the photoshop is trying to emphasize the darker and more complex side of his gumiho nature. When it comes to how supernatural creatures are depicted, I am usually disappointed (I am thinking, for example, about the half-goblin/half human figure in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho--who resembles a model and not some hybrid creation--as well as Miho herself). I feel that in their completely human state, there should be something in the physical appearances of these beings that hints at their otherworldliness (perhaps something about their eyes or some other detail). They can resemble some state in transition. And when they transform, they should really look different. One supernatural depiction I really liked was from the film, The Company of Wolves (1985). There was something feral beneath the seemingly calm exterior of the hunter (who appears in the last portion of the film). Then there is an in-between state right before his final transformation (for a film made in the mid '80s, he looks amazing!). Anyway, I'm rambling...and waiting excitedly for Monday!

Hmm interesting. I like the posters better than the preview. And Sung Joon totally HOT in black and mane of glory. I hope it will be dark and tragic. If they do either dark/tragic or light/funny. They should all the way not half way and change it halfway.

We know Kang Chi is reckless in the beginning, but he is good at heart, he is probably the village robin hood. He just finds himself bigger and faster than the baddies. No one taught him kungfu.

If you want a slick kungfu drama, please watch Damo instead.

I was wondering why in the action stills, Kang Chi stance does not have his hands in fist like any kungfu scenes or even us typical human instinct. Then it hit me : coz he is not ! My admiration for Seung Gi as an actor rise again. He had put much attention to details .

Again, if you are looking for a slick kungfu drama, please watch Damo instead. Really.
