Gu Family Book: Episode 6
by girlfriday
It turns out there’s more than one advantage to delaying the reveal that your heroine isn’t a dude. The hero constantly puts his foot in his mouth, and you get lots of speedy skinship. Maybe this should be a cross-dressing drama. Things go from bad to worse for Kang-chi today, which I guess in dramaland is just another day.
EPISODE 6 RECAP
We open with a young Kang-chi, stewing in anger. Lord Park looks down at him calmly, and then we see the row of other boys kneeling beside him, bruised from a beating. Heh.
Kang-chi gets scolded for hitting the other boys, but he cries in defense that they teased him for being thrown away in a river. Lord Park says he’s grateful that Kang-chi was abandoned in a river: “Otherwise I never would have met you. Relations by the heart can be family, no different from blood.”
He calls Kang-chi his family, loud and clear for the other kids to hear. Aw. Little Kang-chi looks up in gratitude and laughs joyfully.
That laugh echoes as we fade out… and fade back in on Lord Park’s sacrifice, as he jumps in front of the sword meant for Kang-chi and dies in his arms.
Dark clouds cover the moonlight as Kang-chi’s fury sets in, and his eyes glow a menacing green as he growls at Jo Gwan-woong: “I will kill you.”
A massive gust of wind knocks everyone down except for Kang-chi, who goes straight for his target.
Suddenly the force of a staff stops him cold. Phew, it’s monk So-jung, here to stop him before he massacres everyone in sight. Kang-chi struggles against the staff, but So-jung uses all his power to subdue him, and finally the bracelet’s power kicks in. All this does not go unnoticed by Jo Gwan-woong.
By the time the wind dies down and everyone looks up, Kang-chi and So-jung are gone.
Yeo-wool and Gon can finally peer over the roof to see what’s going on, and it takes everyone a long pause before it sinks in that Lord Park is dead. Tae-seo breaks down at his father’s side.
Both Dam Pyung-joon and Lee Soon-shin get word of Lord Park’s death, and we cut to his secret vault of riches, still untouched and undiscovered by the authorities.
By morning Lord Park’s body is loaded onto a cart, but the ox pulling him refuses to budge an inch, no matter how many men push from behind. Lady Yoon finally steps up and puts a hand on her husband’s body, asking if he really doesn’t want to go that badly.
She cries that there’s nothing left and that it’s time they go, and when his children do the same, the cart finally begins to move. All the townspeople gather and there’s wailing in the streets the entire length of their journey. It really is moving to see how beloved this man was.
And then things go from bad to worse, as if having the family taken away as traitors wasn’t bad enough: Kang-chi gets framed for killing Lord Park, and wanted posters go up all over town.
It’s ballsy, given how many eye-witnesses there were, but Jo Gwan-woong clearly doesn’t want the responsibility for killing such a universally respected man. Kang-chi’s sudden disappearance from the scene only serves to back up the suspicions, and soon bounty hunters are licking their chops at the massive price on Kang-chi’s head.
Yeo-wool flips her lid at the news and storms out to do something about it. Gon tries to argue that this is something they have to consult her father on, but she refuses to just sit here and let them accuse Kang-chi.
He tries to stop her, asking what she plans to do anyway—what, is she going to hide him away? And be an accomplice? She says she will, without hesitation, and shouts, “I have to find him first! And then thinking comes later.”
Gon seethes, asking why she’s doing this. Yeo-wool says she owes him her life, and twice over at that, thinking it’s only natural to be concerned. She leaves Gon sighing in defeat.
All the members of Lord Park’s family (servants included) get locked up, and the guards take Tae-seo away for interrogation. Mom wails that they can’t take her son away, but he promises her that he won’t die and leave them behind, and resolutely faces questioning.
The courtyard is filled with torture devices strung up in preparation for his arrival, and Jo Gwan-woong sits behind a screen, sipping tea like he’s here to watch a sporting event. Tae-seo quakes in anger and fear, and then a few moments later his family can hear his screams. Augh.
Mom cries and cries for them to let her out, but Chung-jo is stronger, and covers her mother’s ears. She tells the whole family that they have to endure and not break down. I like her. She stifles her own cries and thinks to herself: “Kang-chi-ya, where are you?”
Kang-chi wakes up in the place where he was born, still winded from the pain of So-jung’s blow. He looks around the cave wondering where on earth he is, and So-jung arrives with food.
He immediately stalks off in the other direction, eager to know what happened to his family, but So-jung warns him to stay put for ten days, and that there’s nothing for him to go back to.
When Kang-chi snaps at him So-jung snaps right back like he’s talking to a tiny child, exasperated that he didn’t listen to his very clear instructions to stay away last night. He says very plainly that if Kang-chi had listened, Lord Park wouldn’t have died. Aw, sad, why are you telling him that?
Kang-chi still isn’t deterred from returning to his family no matter how many times he’s told to stay here, so So-jung tosses out: “It was your mother’s dying wish.” Kang-chi stops in his tracks and turns around.
“What did you just say? Mother? You knew my mother?” So-jung says he can do one better: “I was once your father’s best friend.”
Augh, Tae-seo. By the time we get back to Tae-seo, he’s a limp, bloody mess. Jo Gwan-woong walks up to him to point out that it was Tae-seo’s visit (and righteous tirade) that killed his father. Goddamn all you people spreading this father guilt all over the place. Gah.
Tae-seo seethes that he’ll kill him and avenge his father’s death, and Jo Gwan-woong laughs that countless people have said those same words to him, but he’s killed them all. He says this is what taking on Jo Gwan-woong leads to, and walks away with a chuckle, leaving Tae-seo bellowing a cry of rage.
Jo Gwan-woong wonders what Kang-chi’s true nature could be, and his head minion guesses that the bracelet is the source of some kind of magic that he’s harnessing. He’s told to capture Kang-chi alive at all costs.
The cowardly officer comes by to say that they’ve gotten no confessions of traitorous activities, but Jo Gwan-woong doesn’t see the need for silly things like proof. He offers a promotion, and decides that he’d like to take over the Hundred Years Inn himself. And just like that, Lord Park is deemed a traitor.
Tae-seo rejoins his family and asks after Kang-chi, but the servants all say with disappointment that he must’ve run away to save himself. What? People, c’mon, where’s the faith?
Yeo-wool and Gon follow the bounty hunters for a while and figure out that Kang-chi must’ve run into the woods. Gon argues that’s like finding a needle in sand, but Yeo-wool says Kang-chi’s far louder than a needle, so he’ll be easy to find.
Gon asks what he can do to break her stubbornness, and Yeo-wool mulls it over: “Die?” I’m pretty sure he takes her seriously for a moment, being humorless and all. She laughs and says he won’t, not even when she’s old and gray.
The bounty hunters follow them into the woods, only to have Gon threaten them and send them running. But when he turns around, Yeo-wool is gone.
She follows one of Jo Gwan-woong’s men deeper into the woods, but then realizes she’s vastly outnumbered, and that they’re heading right in her direction. She starts to run, when suddenly someone yanks her out of the way.
Panicking, she whirls around and sits on top of him and pulls out her knife, but of course it’s Kang-chi. He pulls her close to hide behind a rock as the men get closer. They’re practically lying on top of each other, but I suppose since Kang-chi still thinks she’s a boy, it’s not awkward for anyone but her.
One of the men gets pretty close to their hiding spot, and Kang-chi’s leg happens to be dangling out from behind the rock… but then the ivy grows around it, hiding it from view. Ooh, is he getting more powers day by day?
She gulps at the closeness, and then he takes a look at her face, noting that he’s rather pretty, enough that people might think he’s a girl. Well, you’re not wrong. He adds that he’s always saving her life and never getting thanked for it.
The funny thing is they’re having this entire conversation lying on top of each other for no reason, and suddenly Gon’s hand comes out of nowhere and yanks Kang-chi up in a flash. Hahaha. The thing is, Gon is so jealous that anyone else might notice that Yeo-wool is a girl just from his behavior, but Kang-chi’s such a hothead that all he does is fight back.
Gon is so livid that he just punches Kang-chi in the face, and then they’re back to holding their fists up at each other, as per usual.
Yeo-wool yells at them to stop, reminding Kang-chi that he has bigger things to worry about—his family’s been taken and he’s being framed for murder. She suggests they hide out till they can figure out a way to clear his name.
But Kang-chi has no intention of hiding out, and plans to head right back home. She’s blocks his path and asks if he hasn’t heard a word she’s said, but he has. “I plan to kill someone on the way in anyway, so one murder or two, what’s the difference?”
Flashback to his conversation with So-jung, who had urged him to just stay here for ten more days, after which he promised to tell him everything about his parents. But Kang-chi flatly refuses, not caring to know a single thing about people who threw him away twenty years ago.
So-jung says he wasn’t abandoned and that there were reasons for all of it, and that he has to know his fate. But Kang-chi says he’s never once been interested in the fate of a child tossed into a river. “I have a family! I have a family I have to save!”
He tells Yeo-wool that he’s going back anyway, and just thought he’d hear a thanks from her before dying. So Kang-chi heads back into town, and all Yeo-wool and So-jung can do is watch.
His movement gets clocked by the bounty hunters as well, who follow quietly. He heads back to the inn, where happy memories just make the empty courtyard feel even more lifeless.
One of the servants comes running up to hug him, and he asks where the family is being kept. Kang-chi turns to go, and the servant calls out that Lord Park’s death wasn’t Kang-chi’s fault. He clenches his fist but doesn’t reply.
Chung-jo suddenly gets dragged out of her cell kicking and screaming, and the family gets told that Lord Park has been found guilty—Tae-seo will be beheaded in the morning, and Chung-jo will be sold off.
They argue that there’s no proof, and Chung-jo demands that the case be taken to higher courts. But their cries fall on deaf ears, and as Chung-jo gets dragged away, Tae-seo faints, calling out for his sister.
Jo Gwan-woong gets told that everything is in place, and then sets his sights on capturing Kang-chi. Looks like the thug collected his reward.
Chung-jo gets locked in a cart ready for transport when her guard conveniently has to use the bathroom, which gives Kang-chi the perfect opportunity to appear right in front of her just as she whispers aloud for him to come save her.
He apologizes for taking so long and starts fiddling with the lock, but Chung-jo stops him. She tells him to save Tae-seo first. Oof. Kang-chi refuses, but she says there might not be enough time, and Tae-seo will die. She makes him do it, and he promises to come back for her.
He starts to walk away but she can’t bring herself to let go of his sleeve. It drives home how deathly afraid she is, which just makes her braver, of course. He turns back to kiss her on the forehead tenderly before heading off. She watches him go and says aloud, “I’ll wait for you. I’ll wait for you, Kang-chi.”
But we see that one of Jo Gwan-woong’s men is on the roof, watching Kang-chi the whole time.
Kang-chi breaks his way into the cells and hurriedly unlocks the doors for everyone to escape. But Lady Yoon tells them she’ll only slow them down, and that she’d rather be sold into slavery than be hunted.
Her servants all immediately sit down, unwilling to go without her. It’s really to give her son the best chance at survival, and Kang-chi kneels to give her his word that he’ll give his life to protect Tae-seo and Chung-jo.
She remembers now how harshly she had reacted the last time Kang-chi had said those words to her. This time she looks up at him through grateful tears and begs him to keep them safe.
So he takes Han-no and one other man to help carry Tae-seo, and Kang-chi leads the way, leaving all the other servants including his father behind.
But as soon as they step foot outside, Jo Gwan-woong’s men are standing there waiting. Kang-chi and Han-no do what they can to fight them off, but the longer it takes the window to escape closes.
Kang-chi tells Han-no he’ll keep the men busy while they sneak Tae-seo away, but Han-no says he’ll have to be the one to stay. Kang-chi looks down to see that he’s already sporting a gaping wound. Eek.
They promise each other they’ll stay alive, and Kang-chi takes Tae-seo away. Han-no buys as much time as he can, but the minion leader sends the rest of the men after Kang-chi, and fights Han-no on his own.
They struggle and clash, while Kang-chi and Tae-seo run, and all the while Chung-jo waits and waits. Han-no gets brought to his knees, and then, a slice across his chest. Oh no, not Han-no too! Is everyone gonna die?
Kang-chi barely gets Tae-seo out of sight where a man discovers them. They panic, but he offers to hide them, saying that he owes a great debt to Lord Park. Ah it’s the rice thief that he once let go.
Just then, one of the men finds them, but an arrow flies out of nowhere and puts him down. Kang-chi looks up to find Yeo-wool smiling back. She asks the rice thief to hide Tae-seo for a few days while she and Kang-chi run the men the other way.
Kang-chi’s still flabbergasted and speechless, and Yeo-wool quips that he needn’t say thanks because those things don’t always need to be said in words. Ha.
They take off running to lead the men into the woods, and split up. But they all come after Kang-chi, and surround him, swords drawn. Meanwhile Chung-jo waits and waits, but it’s her guard who returns first, and starts to lead her away to be sold.
As the men prepare to attack, one of them remembers their leader’s warning that he’d have to remove Kang-chi’s bracelet to capture him, and so at the first chance he gets he slices the bracelet, and the beads go flying into the air.
The entire mountain trembles as birds fly up and the wind starts to swirl violently. So-jung and Yeo-wool each feel the energy start to change, and then suddenly… an eclipse darkens the sky.
Day turns to night in a flash, and then one by one the swords slice at Kang-chi and cut him down. He wonders why he feels this way, like his insides are cooking, and grits his teeth to get up because Chung-jo is waiting.
Yeo-wool finds him and is about to run up, when a glowing blue light appears and she stops. She watches as more lights descend upon Kang-chi. One by one they heal over his wounds.
As he starts to stand, the men all yelp and back away in fear. We see his gumiho claws and then pan up to his glowing green eyes. Yeo-wool’s eyes widen and she gasps, “Choi Kang-chi…” as he growls like a beast.
COMMENTS
I’m surprised that Yeo-wool learns about Kang-chi’s gumiho side so soon (sooner than he figures out she’s a girl, which is funny), but I do like that it gets rid of any chance of a Big Misunderstanding type of story between them. This was the problem from the get-go with his parents, since Wol-ryung thought he could marry Seo-hwa and become human before she’d notice, which was a little optimistic, to put it nicely. I just hope he doesn’t go ripping people’s arteries out before she has a moment to adjust, because that was unpleasant and frightening enough the first time.
Now that we’re six episodes in, I’m itching for So-jung to spill the beans about what he knows, mostly so that we can get our bearings as far as gumiho lore goes in this universe. Like what happens in ten days when Kang-chi turns twenty. Does the bracelet stop working? Or has it already been stripped of its power? And more importantly, what is this fate he’s supposed to live out?
Today’s episode had some really moving moments in the aftermath of Lord Park’s death, but it also suffered from some obvious pitfalls. Until Kang-chi’s intervention, we just saw history repeat itself with Chung-jo as Seo-hwa, and while the noble sacrifices are all noble, I think one (Chung-jo’s) would’ve sufficed. Hers, and then her mother’s, and then Han-no’s… it started to feel silly. Not the sacrifices themselves, mind you, but the execution one after another. Like they were all lining up to take a number and go over the cliff or something. It’s just that nothing about the prison escape felt organic—suddenly a guard had to go use the bathroom, and Kang-chi can get the keys to one lock but not the other, Han-no stays behind for nothing—not perilously logic-failing stuff, but also clearly just cogs set in place to get a very specific outcome, not actions based on situation.
I’m fine with it inasmuch as it doesn’t make or break the story (it’s not a prison break drama), and what we care about is Kang-chi’s emotional connection to this family. But I do hope the producers up their game with action scenes in general. This show’s strength is in the emotional beats so that other stuff tends to fall away, but it would be nice to have the story logic not fall under scrutiny. It’s not in bad territory yet, but the seams definitely show—put A in place to get to B—which is something you want to hide.
But Kang-chi’s love for his family is beyond moving, and it really does just carry the story right along, because at the end of the day we care. He’s a great character and already such a hero, which makes it so easy to root for him to save the day. And knowing how much he has on the line now with Tae-seo and Chung-jo holding on by a thread, it only raises the stakes higher and wrings my heart more.

SPOILER:
As for the spoiler posted above about the betrayal I'd like to see if it there was some logic to it or just a plot device to remove chung-jo out of the picture then enter yeo wool.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen 2nd lead syndrome with the 2nd female lead. Though at least this love triangle is going to end up being pretty intense.

I'm sorry I doubted you, Mama Yoon! Even though you only came to your senses once you needed Kang-chi to save your children, but whatever. I'm just glad that reconciliation came.
Um, is it just me, or is Chung-jo out-acting poor Suzy? Maybe Suzy just hasn't been given enough great scenes yet! Whatever, I still love her bash-buddy flirtiness with him, although he's beginning to seem increasingly more dense for not realizing she's a girl.
I am also really glad she knows what he is, because as you said- history repeating with the whole "but you're a monsterrrrrrr!" thing would just be really annoying.
I see what you're saying about the seams showing, but even still, the emotion carried it through for me, too. I love the mythy legend ambiance it's got, like with Lord Park's cow not wanting to take his body out, like a good king in a fairy tale.
Anyway, my biggest wish right now is that he get Chung-jo out of Creepy McBastardson's evil clutches. Please please please pleeeeease Drama?

I'm so glad that Lady Park acknowledged KC finally. It was very touching when she said to him, "Prove that your father is not a traitor." She's come to accept that Lord Park treats KC as a son.
I loved the opening scene when Lord Park lowered himself to KC's level and told him that he was fortunate to have found KC and that he sees him as a son. And the look of adoration KC gave him! So sweet!

Standing ovation for Dam by the way. compared to Kang Chi's mother, I know that she will be able to handle it better.. and what a stupid soldier that was. They're gonna die now.

Gu Family Book has already been bought by a Philippine network just after the 2nd ep. was shown. If the rumors I read are true, then it will be shown on ABS, which I think makes sense since they got MGIAG before and would love a sort of continuation.
I'd be sure to watch it once it starts airing here. ABS is really great when it comes to finding dubbers; they almost always manage to get ones whose voices sound so much like the original. Can't wait for GFB to be shown here and watch the episodes for a 2nd time. :D

I think KC's biggest dilemna would be whether or not to remain a gumiho.
Just some thoughts of mine:
On one hand, to give up his gumiho status means that he would have to give up his super strength. Already with the bracelet, he was pretty strong; now with the bracelet gone, he's wolverine incarnate! But then he would be feared.
However, without his gumiho powers, how can he even hope to try to defeat GW?
So, KC also needs to learn that not all problems can be solved with brute strength. In the past, he has succeeded in using his strength to defend and scare away thugs, but now there's GW, who can't be defeated by brute strength alone. He has all the while been responding more like a beast - using strength to defeat his foes, but to be a human, he needs to learn to use his brains as well.
He needs to befriend Lee Jaeha!

is anyone annoyed with Suzy's wooden acting? Not trying to bash her or anything, but I constantly find myself waiting for the moment where I'm like "yes she's totally into character" but the more I watch the more I'm convinced another (more experienced actress) would have been more suitable. I just feel like she's saying the lines and making the expressions when necessary without convincing me she's truly feeling the role of Dam. Sigh, le disappointed.
Not to bring in another show, but watching IU in "You're the Best Lee Shin Soon" - now that girl is a total natural, I would have loved to see her play Dam's role instead

I've thought that a bit, but I'm still rooting for Suzy. Honestly, Chung-jo's actress is knocking it out of the park, but at the moment that role needs more dramatic chops, so it's probably for the best. At any rate, Dam is still trying to hide her gender, as well as her feelings, so I think Suzy has some time to get more into character.
IU is doing really well! I like her a lot in Lee Soon Shin, but I don't know how her action abilities are. I would like to see her tackle a role like this, though. She and Jung-seok are killing it with the bicker/flirting.

That's the point. She's probably raking in the most money after Seung Gi, given her part.
I am okay with idols acting. I'm not okay if they have to "get experience" by instantly and constantly playing the lead roles in dramas.

Suzy is not Ha Ji Won (RaIm) or Chae Rim (DalJa). The lead actor usually helps a newbee but Lee Seung-Gi did not spend years going to acting school, he went to singing/music school. He doesn't know how to make Suzy's acting better.
The lead should say his lines naturally so the rookie delivers her line naturally right in the flow. The lead is acting to look like a star, to look cute and lovable. Suzy is not at Shin Min Ah's level YET to be staring with LSG.
Last week I watched "Ditto" 1999 DVD and Kim Haneul was awful in it but look at her acting now. I'm sure Suzy will become a very good actor too. BTW I expected too much from the creators of Secret Garden and Dalja's Spring, talk about cute...

please always forget that some of the actors they love and say that have awesome acting was really bad when they first started.
While others have natural skills to act. Nowdays the young actors were most child actors so they have a good base and acting skills to not make them stiff or not natural on screen.
I think Suzy can get better with time.

I think Kim Haneul is still bad; AGD was cringeworthy, although part of the blame lies with the juvenile way the part was writtten. But she's no Kim Sun Ah, one of the few women to really make something meaty out of a KES drama female lead.

Why does SG have to responsible for SuZy's bad acting? It should be her own responsibility and also her agency. Hes super busy himself, I think he's already try his best to have chemistry with her somehow by friendly approaching her 1st, but the rest its depend on her. I dont have anything against SuZy but if she didnt good in these simple scenes in the beginning, how can she be good in highly emotional scenes ? Seriously, after watching 6 apisodes of this drama, the only thing keep me going is SG's awesome acting, to point that I can ignore the bad writing plot and bad acting of so many ppl there.

She's not only working with Seunggi. She's had more screen time with Sung Joon (though he's a newbie actor too) so far. And quite a few other veteran actors. I think LSG is probably doing the best he can to help her out. But it's really up to her to take it the next level. He can't force her to emote.

Oh redfox, when you cast an idol, nine times out of ten it IS "actress kindergarten" and the idol is expected to a) bring in fans as viewers, b) generate plenty of press, and c) show the abs and/or show the cuteness, depending on gender. Acting ability is not required nor, it seems, demanded by the audience. Cute seems to be enough, for most people.

Wow this episode was brutal to watch. All these bad things happening one right after another. Poor Kang-chi.
I hope Tae-seo gets better. And that he helps Kang-chi take down Jo Gwan-woong, who I hate more and more each episode. And they better rescue Chung-jo soon, before Jo Gwan-woong gets his slimy paws on her.
So glad that it looks like Yeo-wool now know about Kang-chi's powers, and I hope the monk explains everything soon.
This show is not without its flaws, but I still love it.
Thanks for the recap, GF!

I have a theory on what the bracelet means. I THINK that if he wears the bracelet until he's 20, he gets to become human. If the bracelet is taken off or broken, he'll become a Gumiho for life. I thought of this at the part where he and Sung Jo were at the cave and Kang Chi was being stubborn to save his family but Sung Jo stopped him by saying it's his mother's dying wish (which was for him to live as a human). So if he had stayed and be good for 10 more days, just like what his father should've done, he could've become human. But we all know what happens in Dramaland. ;) But again, just a theory. :)

This drama is very engaging. Its very interesting to watch how the story is unfolding in every episode.
I loved this episode esp. the last part whr KC turns into a gumiho and YW witnesses it. The very fact that she wl already know about his gumiho side wl make their storyline very different from KC's parents.'
Also, i think its too early to comment on d chemistry between KC and YW. They r not in love with each other. YW seems to be curious about KC but not in love. As for KC, she is a boy so there can be no chemistry at this point.
But given d ending, the next episode seems to be quite promising.

Loved this episode! I kinda thought the bracelet was his one chance to be truly human but losing it now means...no way he can live the life his mom wanted for him.
I thought this episode was way better than last one's --although the town'speople and the magistrate did believe the worst of Kang Chi and the best of our villain waaaaaay too easily, and the moment when KC was freeing Tae Soo felt odd. Actually, it wasn't a moment. That was the loudest longest quickie prison break I've seen in ages. But at least it didn't bother me as much as last episode's matrix-y battle. That "one hand to the ground, head held up," falling after each bit of swordplay was making me wonder about the fight choreographer's ingenuity.
I spent most of the episode worrying about all that money and hoping against hope that over-the-top-villain-without-a-cause will never find it. Where is the Governor, btw? How will he react when he returns to get the gold? Surely, a governor has more power over a mere aristocratic naeuri? Am I missing something about the hierarchy?
Loved the Ox not wanting to move. Felt so cosmic.
Other cosmic moments: the wind in the trees. Just love when the mountains react to our heroes plight.
But best cosmic moment of all: the reveal! I loooooooooove it when a hero finally reveals himself, even if unintentionally. I want those baddies to know who they are dealing with.

Yeah big reveal! I'm excited to see Kang Chi come into his own as a powerful forest spirit, although I know he'll eventually become human.
As far as the "quickie prison break", I feel like that is a weakness of Korean dramas in general. Because they have to fill time, they spend way too much time on things that could be more deftly handled.
I thought the fight scenes were fun, but I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to those. Although I feel like all of Seung-gi's punches look fake? I mean, obviously they are, but they shouldn't seem like it. Not sure if it's the directing, fight choreography, or his skills.
The Governor might be more powerful than Rat Bastard on paper, but look how easily he framed Lord Park. And everyone knows he's stooping to below-the-belt tactics to get what he wants, so they probably don't want to mess with him. Plus, if the wrong person (i.e. Rat Bastard) found the ship plans, they might either a) accuse the governor of treason by going against the wishes of the council, or b) betray the country to its enemies.
I agree, there ain't no way that no one in that packed courtyard blabbed about who really killed Lord Park. No. Way. The only way I bought it was that the bandit who had a grudge on Kang Chi already was the one who turned him in.
I love the cosmic stuff too! It makes me think of good kings in fairy tales, how Lord Park was so loved by the people. And how the forest reacts to save its own, by camouflaging Kang Chi and Yeo Wool. I just wish there was a way for people to accept him as he is, rather than him needing to change and be human. I mean, forest spirit gumihos obviously aren't inherently evil, just protective of things they love. So, easy answer: don't threaten those things, which is probably evil anyway, and you're good. They exist to keep balance, and greedy Jerk Butt is obviously upsetting that.

It definitely feels like a fairytale. Arang was great but it didn't have a fairytale feel.
In this drama, all of nature is in on the battle and is on our hero's side. Even normal animal non-magic magic..with that Ox. It rings true. That's what animals would do if a great person dies.
And Lord Park was sooooooooo good. Always loving Kang Chi as a son. Such a noble family. Such an evil villain. Just perfect wonderful fairytale stuff.

Regarding the magistrate view that KC is guilty: Actually, he KNOWS that KC is not, and that Papa Park is NOT a traitor, but for a promotion, he'll 'believe' anything!
As for the way the town people believe that KC is guilty: I think that people in general are like that. People will believe what they want to believe. Lord Park was beloved by them - someone has to be the scape goat. Shakespeare used this 'mass believe' in some of this plays - check out Corolanius and Julius Caesar - where the masses change their minds like they change clothes, depending on the situation and are used by the authoritises to get the results they want.
Moreover, it seems like GW is very much feared.

The masses do tend to be easily-swayed but they also know when folks are playing them. They seem to actually believe Kang Chi did it..which feels unbelievable to me. Might just be me but...in that one respect i think the writers didn't want to do the work of making it more believable.

Its simplistic to think that just 'cause a person binds her breasts , she's gotta be seen as a male.
Suzy looks & sounds very girl! They should make it more believable ..in hairdo , speech , tone of voice , action...just something more .You cant stare at a girl at such close range & not know, instinctively , "hey, this here, feels ..looks..smells like a giiirlll!"

Ha Ha! she may have small breasts! But I know what you mean.
The only explanation I have in defence of KC is that he has not been around girls much.
Having written that, I think that it's not so much KC's lack of perception, as Suzy inability to appear more boyish and tough. Her hairstyle is too girlish, and her walk and mannerisms too girly.

oh dear... I was thinking as I forced myself to watch this whole thing I wished Seung Gi chose something else to do for his drama comeback this year. No offense to those who like this but the 2 consecutive rounds of the camera focusing on each of the main characters faces after Lord Park gets stabbed when the faces look the same; the overly epic music when someone is just running along (at least no wtf english Enya-type music anymore); the constant use of flashbacks that break the flow of the scene; the super overly dramatic screaming & fainting urghhhhh!!!
if they just tone it down & the writer lay off the caffeine or whatever that is making this drama so incoherent in its histrionics I think it would be a ton better. Just my opinion. & I still luv the puppy even if this drama turns out more beastly than beauty.

Suzy acted well in Big but she isn't believable as a martial artist tomboy. This role requires more subtlety and fire than she's capable of at the moment. On top of the fact I am supposed to believe that everyone thinks she's a guy. SAY WHAT!!!!!! Also Lee Seung Gi-- I don't think this role is a good fit for him, at least at this point. I have a hard time taking him seriously as a fighter. And all the slow motion and stop motion scenes make me laugh. He and Suzy have ZERO chemistry to me at this point. I have been laughing at so many moments where I am not supposed to.
And the idea that just cause they aren't supposed to have chemistry yet cause the story isn't there is incorrect. There doesn't need to be any romance factor to have chemistry. Take Sungkyunkwan Scandal, with another two actors there might not have been such a legendary bromance, but those two had chemistry. In Queen of Reversals the heroine and her enemy had great chemistry as foes and then as reluctant friends.
I have no doubt LSG can act that he is in love with Suzy's character later, but that won't change the lack of chemistry. I am sure many people can name shows that the chemistry never came together for the leads.
I am also glad I am one of many that prefers him with CJ they have so much chemistry and epic romance that I too am dreading when they change her to make us accept the real pairing. It would be awesome if they shake it up and don't do it.

The problem lies here is Suxy doesnt bring her character to life, she's just like "Suzy in a historical costume", not YW. She doesnt have screen presence at all. when I remember the drama plot, I totally forgot her character supposed to be in there. Have been watching several chinese dramas that have similar plot of the hero gives up his 1st lover to be with the 2nd tomboy lover like this, i always like the 2nd lover more, but in here, Suzy was just to blank I have no sympathy for her character at all.
I know its useless to root for KC-CJ couple but their chemistry is just plain awesome. But probably the writer will twist the plot to force us dislike her or destroy her eligibility to be with KC somehow, may be make her a true giseang? :/.
Been watching Chinese historical dramas since I was young so really cant help comparing with Korean sageuk, serously they need to hire a better martial art director. I dont know how can the director can even say Ok with those poor fighting scenes, esp miss martial art instructor who doesnt even have strength to carry the sword at all.
Haizz, I'll be even more worried when the love line of KC & YW starts, It looks like SG's gonna act by himself again like in that moonlight scene. Will still continue to watch for my dear SG alone.

"Um, is it just me, or is Chung-jo out-acting poor Suzy?"
A reply to someone above.
Sadly, yes... Although suzy hasn't been given enough scenes as intense as the ones lee yoo bi has been given, i still think this is one of the cases in k-drama where second leads steal the show. Interestingly enough, both actresses debuted in the same year (2011) dream high, vampire idol respectively, although it is obvious lee yoo bi's acting is on a higher level. (She is also older)
It's bound to happen considering suzy is foremost an idol more than she is an actress, so I came into this show expecting cute and adorable suzy to be overshadowed by the more experienced cast.
I would really like to love this show more than i actually do, because i really love seung gi and wish for success with all his shows.
Aside from the flaws that are starting to become more apparent (action scenes are meh, the plot points that lead us from point A to point B seems illogical, suzy is doing her job but not really excelling -- so i can see where down the road in terms of romance with our OTP, it may not connect me as emotionally, but rather just stay in the Aw, cute zone -- although we still have alot of episodes left. Maybe it's too early to judge?
That said, this show still has its stronger points in the heart and the emotional beats and makes us care, as GF pointed out. I want to be there for kang chi's journey and see whatever unfolds.
I've got to say though, i am very happy that seung gi is continuously improving after each project he does. It really is great that seung gi got to learn so much from his sunbaes in K2H -- you can see that he's able to project his emotions through his eyes ALOT better than in his older days with brilliant legacy/MGIG.
See, i can be a seung gi fan and still admit this show isn't perfect. Not all fans are delusional and in denial. There is a rare number of us that can still judge a show without our oppa or our unni getting in the way.

Hi mangoes,
I agree with you on all your points, except the action scenes. Of course, they can't be compared to the Chinese/HK kungfu scenes I'm used to with Jet Li and Jackie Chan, but compared to other Kdrama action scenes, I thought that they were pretty good. In fact, some of Seunggi's moves were pretty cool.
I'm actually enjoying the drama, (if I just enjoy it, without dissecting it too much), but I am very concerned with the writing and hope that someone will cue the writer about plot development. The other thing I'm concerned about is also the level of tragedy. I hope that they don't overdo it, cos even if I enjoy the show, I may not watch it again - too painful and traumatic!

You know which drama did action scenes well? Arang & the Magistrate. I think I keep expecting to see action scenes like that, awesome background music included, that really makes me sit up and pay attention. When the Gumiho comes out I pay attention, of course, but beyond that... There's some kind of terrible flaw with the camera angles or the poses or the fact that the confrontation seems to be more fleeing than fighting most of the time. IDK.
I'm starting to fast forward through scenes, which is not a good sign.
I wonder if/when Kang Chi's father will come into play again. That would put this drama back on track!

Absolutely in love with this drama and as always, so thankful to the recaps.
Sung Joon is putting so much into this role and I love him for it. I wish he wasn't a second lead, but I love Seung-Gi too, ugh so conflicted -_-. I hope Gon gets a good ending.
People have been debating about Suzy's acting, but I just have to put in my two cents and say she's still far far far from female lead material but she's not entirely unbearable. I'm glad the rest of the cast is there to make up for it.
Am I also the only one who loves Wol-Ryung's and Kang Chi's Gumiho forms? <3

And also, Suzy's character is not so emotional, very stiff, boyish and straight forward anyway so she portraits the role well.
The only thing is Korean actors are not so experience with ancient action dramas so all of them look wierd the way they walk (so modern style) and fight(so fake).

I fell in love with this drama mainly for KC who is an unlikely hero, we saw how humans behave as usual judging by appearances, if it looks like a monster it has to be one, KC's dad paid the ultimate price, he was misjudge and sacrificed not by the other humans who didn't really know him but by the woman he loved and trusted and this woman even got rid of their own baby because she couldn't see beyond appearances... That made me fall in love with the story but what moved me of episode 6 was the mom who begged KC to keep her kids safe even though to her he wasn't nothing but a monster now she begs him for her kids, I guess when it comes to their kids moms throw their pride out the window. Poor KC though he has to save these two people he loves but would they accept him or would they do what his own mom did... that is what I can't wait to see.
