Gu Family Book: Episode 6

It turns out there’s more than one advantage to delaying the reveal that your heroine isn’t a dude. The hero constantly puts his foot in his mouth, and you get lots of speedy skinship. Maybe this should be a cross-dressing drama. Things go from bad to worse for Kang-chi today, which I guess in dramaland is just another day.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

We open with a young Kang-chi, stewing in anger. Lord Park looks down at him calmly, and then we see the row of other boys kneeling beside him, bruised from a beating. Heh.

Kang-chi gets scolded for hitting the other boys, but he cries in defense that they teased him for being thrown away in a river. Lord Park says he’s grateful that Kang-chi was abandoned in a river: “Otherwise I never would have met you. Relations by the heart can be family, no different from blood.”

He calls Kang-chi his family, loud and clear for the other kids to hear. Aw. Little Kang-chi looks up in gratitude and laughs joyfully.

That laugh echoes as we fade out… and fade back in on Lord Park’s sacrifice, as he jumps in front of the sword meant for Kang-chi and dies in his arms.

Dark clouds cover the moonlight as Kang-chi’s fury sets in, and his eyes glow a menacing green as he growls at Jo Gwan-woong: “I will kill you.”

A massive gust of wind knocks everyone down except for Kang-chi, who goes straight for his target.

Suddenly the force of a staff stops him cold. Phew, it’s monk So-jung, here to stop him before he massacres everyone in sight. Kang-chi struggles against the staff, but So-jung uses all his power to subdue him, and finally the bracelet’s power kicks in. All this does not go unnoticed by Jo Gwan-woong.

By the time the wind dies down and everyone looks up, Kang-chi and So-jung are gone.

Yeo-wool and Gon can finally peer over the roof to see what’s going on, and it takes everyone a long pause before it sinks in that Lord Park is dead. Tae-seo breaks down at his father’s side.

Both Dam Pyung-joon and Lee Soon-shin get word of Lord Park’s death, and we cut to his secret vault of riches, still untouched and undiscovered by the authorities.

By morning Lord Park’s body is loaded onto a cart, but the ox pulling him refuses to budge an inch, no matter how many men push from behind. Lady Yoon finally steps up and puts a hand on her husband’s body, asking if he really doesn’t want to go that badly.

She cries that there’s nothing left and that it’s time they go, and when his children do the same, the cart finally begins to move. All the townspeople gather and there’s wailing in the streets the entire length of their journey. It really is moving to see how beloved this man was.

And then things go from bad to worse, as if having the family taken away as traitors wasn’t bad enough: Kang-chi gets framed for killing Lord Park, and wanted posters go up all over town.

It’s ballsy, given how many eye-witnesses there were, but Jo Gwan-woong clearly doesn’t want the responsibility for killing such a universally respected man. Kang-chi’s sudden disappearance from the scene only serves to back up the suspicions, and soon bounty hunters are licking their chops at the massive price on Kang-chi’s head.

Yeo-wool flips her lid at the news and storms out to do something about it. Gon tries to argue that this is something they have to consult her father on, but she refuses to just sit here and let them accuse Kang-chi.

He tries to stop her, asking what she plans to do anyway—what, is she going to hide him away? And be an accomplice? She says she will, without hesitation, and shouts, “I have to find him first! And then thinking comes later.”

Gon seethes, asking why she’s doing this. Yeo-wool says she owes him her life, and twice over at that, thinking it’s only natural to be concerned. She leaves Gon sighing in defeat.

All the members of Lord Park’s family (servants included) get locked up, and the guards take Tae-seo away for interrogation. Mom wails that they can’t take her son away, but he promises her that he won’t die and leave them behind, and resolutely faces questioning.

The courtyard is filled with torture devices strung up in preparation for his arrival, and Jo Gwan-woong sits behind a screen, sipping tea like he’s here to watch a sporting event. Tae-seo quakes in anger and fear, and then a few moments later his family can hear his screams. Augh.

Mom cries and cries for them to let her out, but Chung-jo is stronger, and covers her mother’s ears. She tells the whole family that they have to endure and not break down. I like her. She stifles her own cries and thinks to herself: “Kang-chi-ya, where are you?”

Kang-chi wakes up in the place where he was born, still winded from the pain of So-jung’s blow. He looks around the cave wondering where on earth he is, and So-jung arrives with food.

He immediately stalks off in the other direction, eager to know what happened to his family, but So-jung warns him to stay put for ten days, and that there’s nothing for him to go back to.

When Kang-chi snaps at him So-jung snaps right back like he’s talking to a tiny child, exasperated that he didn’t listen to his very clear instructions to stay away last night. He says very plainly that if Kang-chi had listened, Lord Park wouldn’t have died. Aw, sad, why are you telling him that?

Kang-chi still isn’t deterred from returning to his family no matter how many times he’s told to stay here, so So-jung tosses out: “It was your mother’s dying wish.” Kang-chi stops in his tracks and turns around.

“What did you just say? Mother? You knew my mother?” So-jung says he can do one better: “I was once your father’s best friend.”

Augh, Tae-seo. By the time we get back to Tae-seo, he’s a limp, bloody mess. Jo Gwan-woong walks up to him to point out that it was Tae-seo’s visit (and righteous tirade) that killed his father. Goddamn all you people spreading this father guilt all over the place. Gah.

Tae-seo seethes that he’ll kill him and avenge his father’s death, and Jo Gwan-woong laughs that countless people have said those same words to him, but he’s killed them all. He says this is what taking on Jo Gwan-woong leads to, and walks away with a chuckle, leaving Tae-seo bellowing a cry of rage.

Jo Gwan-woong wonders what Kang-chi’s true nature could be, and his head minion guesses that the bracelet is the source of some kind of magic that he’s harnessing. He’s told to capture Kang-chi alive at all costs.

The cowardly officer comes by to say that they’ve gotten no confessions of traitorous activities, but Jo Gwan-woong doesn’t see the need for silly things like proof. He offers a promotion, and decides that he’d like to take over the Hundred Years Inn himself. And just like that, Lord Park is deemed a traitor.

Tae-seo rejoins his family and asks after Kang-chi, but the servants all say with disappointment that he must’ve run away to save himself. What? People, c’mon, where’s the faith?

Yeo-wool and Gon follow the bounty hunters for a while and figure out that Kang-chi must’ve run into the woods. Gon argues that’s like finding a needle in sand, but Yeo-wool says Kang-chi’s far louder than a needle, so he’ll be easy to find.

Gon asks what he can do to break her stubbornness, and Yeo-wool mulls it over: “Die?” I’m pretty sure he takes her seriously for a moment, being humorless and all. She laughs and says he won’t, not even when she’s old and gray.

The bounty hunters follow them into the woods, only to have Gon threaten them and send them running. But when he turns around, Yeo-wool is gone.

She follows one of Jo Gwan-woong’s men deeper into the woods, but then realizes she’s vastly outnumbered, and that they’re heading right in her direction. She starts to run, when suddenly someone yanks her out of the way.

Panicking, she whirls around and sits on top of him and pulls out her knife, but of course it’s Kang-chi. He pulls her close to hide behind a rock as the men get closer. They’re practically lying on top of each other, but I suppose since Kang-chi still thinks she’s a boy, it’s not awkward for anyone but her.

One of the men gets pretty close to their hiding spot, and Kang-chi’s leg happens to be dangling out from behind the rock… but then the ivy grows around it, hiding it from view. Ooh, is he getting more powers day by day?

She gulps at the closeness, and then he takes a look at her face, noting that he’s rather pretty, enough that people might think he’s a girl. Well, you’re not wrong. He adds that he’s always saving her life and never getting thanked for it.

The funny thing is they’re having this entire conversation lying on top of each other for no reason, and suddenly Gon’s hand comes out of nowhere and yanks Kang-chi up in a flash. Hahaha. The thing is, Gon is so jealous that anyone else might notice that Yeo-wool is a girl just from his behavior, but Kang-chi’s such a hothead that all he does is fight back.

Gon is so livid that he just punches Kang-chi in the face, and then they’re back to holding their fists up at each other, as per usual.

Yeo-wool yells at them to stop, reminding Kang-chi that he has bigger things to worry about—his family’s been taken and he’s being framed for murder. She suggests they hide out till they can figure out a way to clear his name.

But Kang-chi has no intention of hiding out, and plans to head right back home. She’s blocks his path and asks if he hasn’t heard a word she’s said, but he has. “I plan to kill someone on the way in anyway, so one murder or two, what’s the difference?”

Flashback to his conversation with So-jung, who had urged him to just stay here for ten more days, after which he promised to tell him everything about his parents. But Kang-chi flatly refuses, not caring to know a single thing about people who threw him away twenty years ago.

So-jung says he wasn’t abandoned and that there were reasons for all of it, and that he has to know his fate. But Kang-chi says he’s never once been interested in the fate of a child tossed into a river. “I have a family! I have a family I have to save!”

He tells Yeo-wool that he’s going back anyway, and just thought he’d hear a thanks from her before dying. So Kang-chi heads back into town, and all Yeo-wool and So-jung can do is watch.

His movement gets clocked by the bounty hunters as well, who follow quietly. He heads back to the inn, where happy memories just make the empty courtyard feel even more lifeless.

One of the servants comes running up to hug him, and he asks where the family is being kept. Kang-chi turns to go, and the servant calls out that Lord Park’s death wasn’t Kang-chi’s fault. He clenches his fist but doesn’t reply.

Chung-jo suddenly gets dragged out of her cell kicking and screaming, and the family gets told that Lord Park has been found guilty—Tae-seo will be beheaded in the morning, and Chung-jo will be sold off.

They argue that there’s no proof, and Chung-jo demands that the case be taken to higher courts. But their cries fall on deaf ears, and as Chung-jo gets dragged away, Tae-seo faints, calling out for his sister.

Jo Gwan-woong gets told that everything is in place, and then sets his sights on capturing Kang-chi. Looks like the thug collected his reward.

Chung-jo gets locked in a cart ready for transport when her guard conveniently has to use the bathroom, which gives Kang-chi the perfect opportunity to appear right in front of her just as she whispers aloud for him to come save her.

He apologizes for taking so long and starts fiddling with the lock, but Chung-jo stops him. She tells him to save Tae-seo first. Oof. Kang-chi refuses, but she says there might not be enough time, and Tae-seo will die. She makes him do it, and he promises to come back for her.

He starts to walk away but she can’t bring herself to let go of his sleeve. It drives home how deathly afraid she is, which just makes her braver, of course. He turns back to kiss her on the forehead tenderly before heading off. She watches him go and says aloud, “I’ll wait for you. I’ll wait for you, Kang-chi.”

But we see that one of Jo Gwan-woong’s men is on the roof, watching Kang-chi the whole time.

Kang-chi breaks his way into the cells and hurriedly unlocks the doors for everyone to escape. But Lady Yoon tells them she’ll only slow them down, and that she’d rather be sold into slavery than be hunted.

Her servants all immediately sit down, unwilling to go without her. It’s really to give her son the best chance at survival, and Kang-chi kneels to give her his word that he’ll give his life to protect Tae-seo and Chung-jo.

She remembers now how harshly she had reacted the last time Kang-chi had said those words to her. This time she looks up at him through grateful tears and begs him to keep them safe.

So he takes Han-no and one other man to help carry Tae-seo, and Kang-chi leads the way, leaving all the other servants including his father behind.

But as soon as they step foot outside, Jo Gwan-woong’s men are standing there waiting. Kang-chi and Han-no do what they can to fight them off, but the longer it takes the window to escape closes.

Kang-chi tells Han-no he’ll keep the men busy while they sneak Tae-seo away, but Han-no says he’ll have to be the one to stay. Kang-chi looks down to see that he’s already sporting a gaping wound. Eek.

They promise each other they’ll stay alive, and Kang-chi takes Tae-seo away. Han-no buys as much time as he can, but the minion leader sends the rest of the men after Kang-chi, and fights Han-no on his own.

They struggle and clash, while Kang-chi and Tae-seo run, and all the while Chung-jo waits and waits. Han-no gets brought to his knees, and then, a slice across his chest. Oh no, not Han-no too! Is everyone gonna die?

Kang-chi barely gets Tae-seo out of sight where a man discovers them. They panic, but he offers to hide them, saying that he owes a great debt to Lord Park. Ah it’s the rice thief that he once let go.

Just then, one of the men finds them, but an arrow flies out of nowhere and puts him down. Kang-chi looks up to find Yeo-wool smiling back. She asks the rice thief to hide Tae-seo for a few days while she and Kang-chi run the men the other way.

Kang-chi’s still flabbergasted and speechless, and Yeo-wool quips that he needn’t say thanks because those things don’t always need to be said in words. Ha.

They take off running to lead the men into the woods, and split up. But they all come after Kang-chi, and surround him, swords drawn. Meanwhile Chung-jo waits and waits, but it’s her guard who returns first, and starts to lead her away to be sold.

As the men prepare to attack, one of them remembers their leader’s warning that he’d have to remove Kang-chi’s bracelet to capture him, and so at the first chance he gets he slices the bracelet, and the beads go flying into the air.

The entire mountain trembles as birds fly up and the wind starts to swirl violently. So-jung and Yeo-wool each feel the energy start to change, and then suddenly… an eclipse darkens the sky.

Day turns to night in a flash, and then one by one the swords slice at Kang-chi and cut him down. He wonders why he feels this way, like his insides are cooking, and grits his teeth to get up because Chung-jo is waiting.

Yeo-wool finds him and is about to run up, when a glowing blue light appears and she stops. She watches as more lights descend upon Kang-chi. One by one they heal over his wounds.

As he starts to stand, the men all yelp and back away in fear. We see his gumiho claws and then pan up to his glowing green eyes. Yeo-wool’s eyes widen and she gasps, “Choi Kang-chi…” as he growls like a beast.

COMMENTS

I’m surprised that Yeo-wool learns about Kang-chi’s gumiho side so soon (sooner than he figures out she’s a girl, which is funny), but I do like that it gets rid of any chance of a Big Misunderstanding type of story between them. This was the problem from the get-go with his parents, since Wol-ryung thought he could marry Seo-hwa and become human before she’d notice, which was a little optimistic, to put it nicely. I just hope he doesn’t go ripping people’s arteries out before she has a moment to adjust, because that was unpleasant and frightening enough the first time.

Now that we’re six episodes in, I’m itching for So-jung to spill the beans about what he knows, mostly so that we can get our bearings as far as gumiho lore goes in this universe. Like what happens in ten days when Kang-chi turns twenty. Does the bracelet stop working? Or has it already been stripped of its power? And more importantly, what is this fate he’s supposed to live out?

Today’s episode had some really moving moments in the aftermath of Lord Park’s death, but it also suffered from some obvious pitfalls. Until Kang-chi’s intervention, we just saw history repeat itself with Chung-jo as Seo-hwa, and while the noble sacrifices are all noble, I think one (Chung-jo’s) would’ve sufficed. Hers, and then her mother’s, and then Han-no’s… it started to feel silly. Not the sacrifices themselves, mind you, but the execution one after another. Like they were all lining up to take a number and go over the cliff or something. It’s just that nothing about the prison escape felt organic—suddenly a guard had to go use the bathroom, and Kang-chi can get the keys to one lock but not the other, Han-no stays behind for nothing—not perilously logic-failing stuff, but also clearly just cogs set in place to get a very specific outcome, not actions based on situation.

I’m fine with it inasmuch as it doesn’t make or break the story (it’s not a prison break drama), and what we care about is Kang-chi’s emotional connection to this family. But I do hope the producers up their game with action scenes in general. This show’s strength is in the emotional beats so that other stuff tends to fall away, but it would be nice to have the story logic not fall under scrutiny. It’s not in bad territory yet, but the seams definitely show—put A in place to get to B—which is something you want to hide.

But Kang-chi’s love for his family is beyond moving, and it really does just carry the story right along, because at the end of the day we care. He’s a great character and already such a hero, which makes it so easy to root for him to save the day. And knowing how much he has on the line now with Tae-seo and Chung-jo holding on by a thread, it only raises the stakes higher and wrings my heart more.

Thank you again for the recap, GF!

This episode left me with so many feelings. I have some questions I would like to ask, before I get to my thoughts:

1--I have been curious about how the name "daddy Ho" (for KC's dad's name, and I hope I am spelling it right) came to be, and I meant to ask that earlier, but forgot. Initially, I thought it had something to do with Koo Wol-Ryung's name (KC's dad), but it didn't seem that it did, nor with KC's mom (her full name is Yoon Seo-Hwa). So, that got me more curious, why "Ho?" Would that have anything to do by any chance with "Ho" being the last syllable of gumiho, hence, "daddy Ho?" (though SH was not a gumiho, I think I saw her being referred to as "mama Ho? Was that in reference to WR, since she was married to him?)

2--I have not seen episode 5 and 6 subbed yet, so I am not up on the translations. I know this drama is a fusion sageuk (sp?), so the "modern" Korean terms I have heard in other dramas do not apply here. I was wondering what the word Gon uses to call YW is and what it means. I heard something like "yorashi?" (please forgive my mispelling, I am trying to write what I heard).
Also, I think I heard CJ call her brother "urabunie," and then "manie" when he came/was brought into the jail cell? (or some names that sounded like what I wrote). Why two different names for her brother (that she used, or seemed to use?) And what do they mean?
I also thought I heard TS's manservant call KC "hyungnim" when he saw him in the Inn. Did I hear right? And if I did, does that mean that was a term that was used back then?

3--In the recap of episode 5, JB mentioned "black art" as a tool/skill (for lack of a word I could think of right now) used by the ninja assassins. Would it be right to assume that it is some kind of magic, and that GW is dealing with the occult, since spirits are mentioned in this drama?

4--By the end of this episode, KC has turned into a gumiho (or 1/2 of one? I am not certain), which makes me wonder, does waiting the 10 (more) days still apply, and would that still have an effect? SJ kept asking him to wait 10 more days, I assumed it was so that KC would not turn into a gumiho before then. Now I am not sure what to think.
Also, when Lord Park died, why did SJ have to stop KC, since KC was still wearing the bracelet. Wasn't that supposed to be enough to restrain him? (Like it did when SJ flew it in the air with WR, who then fell on the ground?) I was just curious about that...

5--I guess we will find out as we watch the show, however I am curious as to whether KC's powers/strength etc... are the same (100%) as WR, since KC is only 1/2 a gumiho and 1/2 human and WR was 100% gumiho. I wonder how that works, genetics-wise...

6--Also, what is a drama mania? JB mentioned that when she mentioned JOJ in her intro in episode 5 recap.

This episode was quite moving for me, especially the beginning, with the Park family treated as slaves and the funeral of Lord Park. I rarely cry when watching a drama (though I get moved), however I did cry when Lord Park's body was taken through the town and people kept wailing and getting down on their knees. The whole scene, with his wife and children, and the many people who loved him, was very moving, and a testament to how good he was, as a man.

I was surprised at the slight change in mama Park, when she asked KC to protect her children, after she remembered how she had spoken to him and how mean she had been. I didn't expect that. It would be interesting to see what her reaction would be, if and when she finds out about KC being a gumiho.

When I saw how the villagers/town people went along with KC being branded as a murderer, I remembered the scene where he was treated as a hero (and thinking at that time, "this is too good! (And people feeling about him that way won't last) ," and sure enough, it didn't. I felt so bad for KC. I know GW is a very powerful man, however, as GF pointed out, there were so many eyewitnesses. How could everyone just go along with what GW was doing? It was almost as if they forgot who KC was, and what he had done for them, SMH... Interesting how quickly people will turn on someone.

20mns into the drama (or so...), when I saw the torture objects that were to be used on TS, I had Gaksital flashbacks. I know this drama is not totally as intense, but that scene brought things like the cage of nails (and other things) back to my mind. And to see TS later, *shudders*

I also thought about the fact that if/when GW gets the Inn, he will get all of MS's money, since it was still in the secret room, right?

I was a little surprised that YW didn't see that it was KC, when she put him to the ground, and opened her knife (which she did with her eyes closed, I don't know why, except for the fact that it served the scene). I replayed that scene a few times, and the way it was shot did not make sense to me. I thought it was interesting that she opened her weapon with her eyes closed.

I loved the herbs growing around KC's legs. I thought that was so cool. Even though he had his bracelet on, it was as if the natural (earthy) elements recognized him (as one of their own), and they protected him (or maybe it was just one of the powers he has, since his dad could do the same thing). Also, I was so scared when KC went back to the Inn, I kept thinking, "you are going to get caught, don't go!" He was caught, but he escaped (temporarily...)

I really loved the ending!!!! I am looking forward to next weeks' episodes!!!!! Also, the chemistry between KC and CJ, wow!!!!!

I will be back later...

Interesting comments. :) And yes, those torture instruments.... Gaksital.... *shudders* I'm just glad they spared us the pain of actually having to watch the torture scenes.

Cheong Jo called her brother "Oraboeni" which is a really formal way to say "oppa". Idk what's up with the "manie" though.

As far as I can tell from all the sageuks I've watched, yes, hyungnim was often used back then. Then again, I'm not Korean, so I'm just guessing. :P

I'm wondering about Kang chi too. As he's half human, it would make sense if his gumiho powers are not as powerful as his father's. But it seems to me that his powers are just as powerful as his father's. It's weird. Idk.

Hope that helped! ^^/

Hello Sammy,

I don't know if you will read this, however I said I would respond, so here it is :-)...

This, "I’m just glad they spared us the pain of actually having to watch the torture scenes," I agree with you on that. When I realized that they didn't let us see the torture scenes, I felt relieved. Hearing TS cry and wail and the other sounds he made, were good enough and worked well, imho.

Thank you for explaining "“Oraboeni” to me. When I hear that term again, I will now know what it means... Thanks also for letting me know about the use of hyungnim in those days.

Regarding KC's powers as a gumiho (you said this, "But it seems to me that his powers are just as powerful as his father’s"), I have the same impressions, that KC's powers are going to be the same as his dad and I was curious about that, which was the reason why I asked, to see what anyone else thought. I wonder if the writer will address that point in the drama.

Your explanations definitely helped, thanks again :-)...

1 - I am not very sure too but maybe the Ho is GuMiHo's Ho? And it would mean fox.

3 - I don't think black arts refers to magic or occult but just secret ninja moves... as it was mentioned before that the story is like a manhwa/manga so should be something like secret martial arts.

4 - I believe that Kang Chi transform into beast-form at the end of episode 6 as the bracelet only serve to somewhat restrain his beast-power. But in danger and when Kang Chi is too emotional, the bracelet often fails. Thus when the bracelet is sliced off, there is nothing left to restrict his beast-power from unleashing.
I think that Kang Chi did not turn into a Gumiho because he always is a half Gumiho but the bracelet just push back his Gumiho power and hence he is able to live as a "powerless" human.
For the 10-more-days issue, there is really not much info to deduce much but the next episode should reveal the meaning behind it.

For the scene that YW is going to knife KC, I think it was supposed to be that YW is reflexively bring her opponent down but YW did not act out that part well enough so...

When I saw the leaves-growing-to-cover-him scene, I was like "YES!!!" cos I love that power shown previously by his dad~!

I thought that if kang chi continued 10 days with the bracelet on, he will be a full human. And I agree with you on your thoughts about the bracelet and its power to keep the gumiho powers at bay. That's why in the second epsiode or was it third? When the bracelet was taken off the baby, his cut healed on its own.

Hello Enz :-), good to hear/read from you!!!!!

You know, I assumed the same thing, that SJ kept asking (urging felt more like it) KC to wait 10 more days because he might become human after those 10 more days. Also, now that I think of it, maybe he didn't say anything to KC because he was hoping that KC would never find out, just like daddy Ho (WR) was hoping to get through the 100 days of fasting (with the 3 rules) without telling SH, hoping that she would never find out that he was a gumiho and a spirit as well.

However, there have been instances (as I am sure you know and have experienced with Kdramas) when we think we know what the writer(s) and the show have in store for us, only to find out that we were wrong and were lead to think one thing, with another one being the result. Because speculating on what the writer(s) have in mind is part of the fun in dissecting a drama (at least for me :-) ), I thought I would put that question out there and see what some of the commenters would have to say about that, while we are waiting to find out. Thank you for playing along :-)...
Hopefully, the writer(s) will address the 10 days deal, because as you also know, writers of dramas sometimes mention things/parts of the plot they never end up explaining or resolving (they leave it hanging), and that can be frustrating (at least for me).

It was in episode 3 (I think) that the bracelet came off (on its own) from KC's little wrist and bad things started to happen around papa MS, and he witnessed the self healing of the wound. Papa MS then put the bracelet back on and things changed for the better from that moment on. KC didn't show up until the 3rd episode :-)...

Hello milkteanlsg,

I am late in responding (sorry), however I am responding. I hope you will get to see/read this.

1-- I am going to assume that "Ho" is the "ho" in gumiho, unless I read otherwise.

3-- Regarding this,"I don’t think black arts refers to magic or occult but just secret ninja moves." I don't think it is secret ninja moves. Remember that YW told KC that the ninjas were illusions, however, even though they were illusions, they could still hurt you during a fight. Those illusions would pop up and disappear when hit or stabbed with the sword, and YW was familiar with them (so she knew of them, or had dealt with them before or both). Remember also that YW told KC that what was important was to find the main leader (who was human), and that it would vanquish all the illusions and that worked, when KC found him and made him flee. I am really curious as to what "black arts" is here (in this case). Also, remember that one of the ninjas disguised himself as So-jung and tried to make MS talk about KC's powers. How could a ninja transform himself as another (known) human?

What made me think that it is magic or occult is the fact that at some point in the recap, JB (I think it was her), mentioned that GW had aligned himself with the dark side (hence the illusions). And maybe part of the dark side here meant the Japanese as well. I would not be surprised if GW is involved with magic and the occult, since this drama is also about spirits... (WR was a good spirit, who protected the mountains).

4--Thanks for your explanation about the bracelet, though I would say that, for a "powerless" human, KC was quite powerful, which was the reason why so many people (his family included) depended on him in times of trouble :-)...
I do hope that the 10-more-days-issue is explained well in the next episodes.

5--You said this, "For the scene that YW is going to knife KC, I think it was supposed to be that YW is reflexively bring her opponent down but YW did not act out that part well enough so…" and I agree with you...

6--Also this, "When I saw the leaves-growing-to-cover-him scene, I was like “YES!!!” cos I love that power shown previously by his dad~!", me too! I felt the same way. I love it when nature protects them (KC or his dad) that way. I think it is one of the positive aspects of their powers.

Thank you for your comments...

Ivoire:
1) The 'ho' is a reference to gumiho. It was coined by someone, sorry I can't remember who in the first episode. It was tagged on to 'daddy' or 'papa' to refer to Wol Ryung being Kang Chi's gumiho father.

2) 'Hyungnim' is a term that is also used nowadays. It is a respectful term that a guy uses to call an older male that he sees as an older brother. Seunggi calls Hodong this sometimes.

3) From my knowledge, 'black arts' do refer to some sort of black magic. But I don't know if this can be used to refer to the kind of illusions that the ninjas used. In one of the earlier episodes, I wrote that I had read somewhere, that the ninjas were rumoured to be so skilled that they could move around undetected, almost like illusions. They would suddenly appear out of nowhere. So I suppose that the writers were using this rumour for the story.

As for transforming into another person, someone commented in an earlier episode, that that was also an illusion. It was not that the ninja transformed into SJ, but that Lord Park saw him as SJ, cos SJ was on his mind - the 20 yrs were almost up, and Lord Park could have been thinking about what SJ had told when he found KC, so naturally, the illusion of SJ appeared.

Hello Crazyajummafan,

And thank you so much for your answer. I have noticed that you tend to check the recaps up to Sunday night (until the next recap comes), and so I am hoping that you will see this answer. Thank you for continually checking on the comments, and for adding your thoughts, which add to my understanding (and enjoyment) of this drama.

1--I got it about the "Ho" in Daddy Ho. I believe it must have been JoAnne who coined the term, because I remember seeing her say that a lot, and the other commenters just followed suit and the term stuck. At the time, I had not thought of gumiho, so I didn't make the connection, and I was intrigued by the terms "Daddy Ho, Mama Ho and baby/puppy Ho." Now I know what they mean :-)

2--Thank you for explaining "Hyungnim." I didn't know that LSG called Hodong in that manner at times (I just learned something new).

3--Some of the commenters don't agree with me, however, I do believe that in this drama, "black art" has to refer to "black magic." I went back to the recap of episode 4, and YW in that episode refers to them as phantoms and they appear like vapor (and disappear in such a way as well). This is what GF wrote about SJ-like appearance in episode 4:
"He (Lord Park) can sense something’s not right. His voice takes on an edge: “Who are you?” He calls out to his servants, but So-jung pulls a sword to his throat, and then as the camera pans he lets the spell fade and shows his true face. It’s Jo Gwan-woong’s right-hand man. With the sword at Lord Park’s neck, he demands to know more about Kang-chi."
As you can see, she says that GW's right-hand man "lets the spell fade and shows his true face." I am thinking that if it is a spell, it might have something to do with magic.

Also, I reread the commentary GF wrote for episode 4, and she had this to say about GW: "Though the baddie Jo Gwan-woong is Just Evil Incarnate, now that we know he has access to magic and that there are darker realms of the mythology that we haven’t explored..." So, there is definitely magic being used by GW (I didn't remember at the time what GF had written).
Also according to JB in the episode 5 recap, "the ninja-phantoms have supernatural powers that allow them to materialize out of dark mist." JB also said that "Slashing a sword through the phantoms only makes them dissipate back into black mist," and so does kicking them, of course.

JB also wrote this, about the head ninja, when he was in front of MS: "Inside, the head ninja reveals his true face to Lord Park (having disguised himself as monk So-jung)." So the head ninja HAD disguised himself (which was what we saw), it was not that MS had created him in his mind, because he had been thinking about KC and SJ and the 20 years (though I do concede that MS had been thinking about the 20 years coming to an end).
This confirms to me that GW and his men are using black magic (as you said), but also that they can apparently (or at least the head ninja can) take/have the appearance of a known person to the person they are talking to. I am thinking that the head ninja could read/see Lord Park's thoughts, and so he knew that transforming himself into SJ would bring Lord Park defenses down, which it did, for a short while. I think that (as you and I probably know), with black magic, one can do a lot of things... And I think that we were shown some of it.

I also found it quite interesting that YW told KC that all they had to do was to find the one real guy among the ninjas (which sounded to me like, 'find the one human among these ninja-phantoms/illusions') the rest of the ninjas would vanish, which also confirms (to me) that those ninjas were not real, another sign of black magic.

Thanks again for your thoughts. When I am done here, I will respond to the comments left to me in episode 5. If you have the time to read and if you are interested, please also check there.

What you heard as “manie” could be 마님 (maenim) which means Lady. But then I guess it must have been addressed to the mother from a servant. I'm not Korean either, but learnt it for 2 years so this is my guess :D

Hey Ivoire! I'm taking a stab at a lot of things using only stuff I've picked up from dramas/DB, so here goes:

1. DaddyHo, MommyHo etc are definitely derived from gumiho....which amused me no end, when I first saw the gang calling Seo-hwa and Wol-ryung that.

2. I'm guessing Gon is just saying 'Yeon-wool agasshi' really fast, and the L in her name does that thing of turning into an R sound in the process. And as far as I can make out, CJ is only calling her actual oppa 'orabunie', which is the old-fashioned thing to call your older brother. 'Maanim', I'm guessing, refers to their mother, the lady of the house - we hear the servants and Kang-chi calling her that too.

3. I'm guessing you're right about Resident Evil dealing in black magic, I guess he's picked up a few things in between decades of inappropriately eyeing people's young daughters. I just wish it was better set up/hinted at earlier.

4. No idea about the 10 day thing but it does make me want to smack Resident Yoda for not just spilling the beans already, of course this is a kdrama so no one can ever just be straightforward with life-altering secrets.

5. I'm wondering too!

6. Mania dramas are I guess what netizens call cult hits - not very popular by ordinary measures, but with hardcore fans who REALLY love it and create buzz around it. I guess the equivalent in Western tv shows would be Firefly.

and I agree, the episode really was moving - 5 felt slapdash and cheesy in places (childhood meetings are compulsory, WHAT. Though thumbs up for Suzy finally expressing something facially besides the vacant pout she had for episodes 3-4, and every other drama she's done before!) yet it gets its footing back in 6 - like GF said you can see the seams, but the scene of Lord Park's body leaving the house made me want to cry too, especially at the townspeople and Lady Yoon (she may have been mean to Kang-chi and that is not completely without reason on her part even if it's not his fault, but she did love her husband and children, and I love that she and Kang-chi find common ground on that).

I'm not super fond of the exact history trying to repeat itself motif that keeps happening, but I do like that it's only trying - Chung-jo, for a start, has much more fire to her than Seo-hwa ever did (and has character traits beyond being pretty and full of yangban pride). The procedure in fusion sageuks is usually to go with a 'modern' heroine, and we have one in YW but I really appreciate that the more 'traditional' of our two female leads isn't portrayed as a complete wuss or thrown under the bus as a mean girl - she has her own strength of character and her own personality, and it shows. (thank goodness the early character descriptions of her as taking advantage of him are not totally accurate)

Also I have to give props to Lee Yoo-bi for playing her that way, if CJ was actually the heroine of this drama I'd love it but into Second Lead Land she goes. And she and Lee Seung-gi do have fantastic chemistry, I badly wanted them to kiss before he left to rescue Tae-seo -another one who needs to live, Kang-chi and all the men on this show are wayyyy too cute together - shame it didn't happen because second lead.

(now someone break her out of that cart please!)

I think the term you asked about was "Na-Ri" but they say it fast enough to not pick on the exact pronunciation, which means "my lord" but that would probably be said by a servant not his sister.

As for Gon, he calls YW "Yoo-Wol Agashi" also said real fast and as someone pointed out that the L turns into an R sound so it comes down to "yoworashy" hope tat helps :)

Hello MsScorpion,

1--This is late, however I do hope that you will see this response. The term you mentioned in your 1st paragraph is "“Naeuri," and that is how I have seen it being written by a blogger who is Korean American and who currently lives in Seoul. As you said, it means "my lord" and that is how KC called Lord Park (and he said it again, when he was holding the dying MS). That was not the term l was referring to, however. Thank you though, for explaining that word/term to me.

2--Your 2nd paragraph explained well what I heard Gon call YW. Thanks!!!!!!

Hello Pogo, :-)

And thank you for your long message. I will tackle it now :-).

1--I agree with you on what you said. Funny how the "gang" quickly came up with names for some of the characters :-).

2--I agree with you on your 2nd paragraph, you totally make sense.

3--I also agree with everything you said here. I wrote in length in my response to Crazyajummafan, why I definitely thought it was black magic. You can read my response to Crazyajumma if you have the time and if you want to.

4--Also agree with you here. And I would add that, if resident Yoda (I love the name you gave him) had spilled the beans when he spoke to KC the 1st or 2nd time, we/the writer might not have enough of a plot to fill this drama up. Remember that this drama has 24 episodes, and she needs to have things to write to fill it up (as I am sure, you know :-) ).

5--So both of us (and a few others), are wondering... Good!!!!!

6--Thank you for explaining "drama manias" to me. I have seen "YAB" being referred to as a drama mania (I think when it aired, the ratings were not very high in Korea).

7--Your next paragraph: I was OK with the childhood meetings, tbh. I felt that it gave me some background history about our leads. I am really hoping that Suzy will shine in this role, we will see. About lady Yoon, she had a few reasons not to feel totally at ease around KC, and it seems that she too knew that there was something secretive about him. Let's see what happens when she finds out. Also yes, she did love her husband and children, however I wished she had been protective of KC as well. Good point about her and KC finding a common ground about how they feel about MS and the children.

8--I do think that SH did have some fire to her though... CJ has not been confronted yet with who KC really is, so it remains to be seen how loyal she will be to KC, once she finds out.
About this, "The procedure in fusion sageuks is usually to go with a ‘modern’ heroine, and we have one in YW but I really appreciate that the more ‘traditional’ of our two female leads isn’t portrayed as a complete wuss or thrown under the bus as a mean girl – she has her own strength of character and her own personality, and it shows. (thank goodness the early character descriptions of her as taking advantage of him are not totally accurate)."
Thank you so much for pointing that out, because I didn't even know about this, however when I started to revisit the few fusion sageuks I have watched so far, I realized that you were right... I will look at fusion sageuks differently now.

9--I also give props to LYB for playing CJ the way she has, so far. CJ is multilayered and so far, not a one dimensional character. Let's see what the writer does with her. I also do hope that CJ will be safe, in this weeks' episodes *crosses my fingers,* and out of the cart.
You know, TS and CJ's descriptions say that they are going to turn away from KC, so... :-(
I was actually kind of glad KC didn't kiss CJ (I guess their social statuses would not allow it?) and I too, do love the bromance KC is having with the guys so far, on this show.

Unlike GF and you, I couldn't see the seams. Maybe I am just blind :-) or I don't know what to look for... In any case, I was happy with this episode.

I am really looking forward to this weeks' (next) episodes. I hope you will get to see my post/response to your post.

hey Ivoire - thanks for your response!

I myself really noted the fusion sageuk anachronistic heroines only after watching The Princess' Man, which is not fusion but has two incredible female leads who manage to be complex and engaging while still being true to their time. And several more traditional ladies have been awesome supporting characters in fusion sageuks (Chosun in Sungkyukwan Scandal is one) than the heroines we're supposed to root for.

I don't mind it if the drama explains WHY the heroine is that way (like in Faith, where the heroine is literally transported from the 21st century, or in Arang, where the heroine behaves like a thug because she's am amnesiac ghost who's lived a rough-and-tumble post-death) but sometimes, they do stick out.

and re: Seo-hwa, I just don't feel like we really see enough personality, you know? I'll come back with a longer answer later.

Hello Pogo,

Soooo good to read/hear from you, I didn't expect it, so it is a nice surprise. I am glad I decided to check out the previous posts, just out of curiosity. Please come back with more thoughts, I would love to read them and answer, if need be. I will be checking back until I see your next post, unless you say otherwise.

Re: SH, what do you mean "you don't see enough personality?" (I am not judging you, I am just asking so I can see and understand what you mean). Because I personally feel that I know who she is (I have a sense of who she is), and though I don't/didn't condone it, I understood why she did what she did. SH makes sense to me, the way she written, in the bigger context of the drama. I am not saying that I like everything about her, more that I understand, based on the circumstances (which are many) and the times in which her story takes place.

I am sooooo glad we are having these conversations. I LOVE raking my brain, trying to understand a drama, its writer, actors, etc... I will be back too, with more (about fusion sageuk dramas).

Have you read my posts for ep. 7 and 8 recaps? (I was just curious, that's all)...

0

Ivoire - the comment about Seo-hwa not having enough personality really comes from a sense of frustration with not being given enough background on her, you know?

I understand the constraints of telling her entire arc within two episodes, but we mostly see her in extreme circumstances - in which she reacts in ways that are somewhat expected..... and pre-gibang Seo-hwa is a bit of a blank slate. I understand her pride and her attachment to Dam and her brother, and her hatred for Jo Gwan-woong, but what feels a little frustrating for me is that we don't find out anything about her in her old life; all we see of her in it is one flash through Resident Evil's eyes, in which she's giggling with Dam like any girl will do.

We don't get so much as a line to say she's particularly scared of supernatural beings (which would make her reaction to Wol-ryung so much more understandable), or, well, anything to explain why she reacted the way she did. Wol-ryung fell for her because she was stubborn and pretty, but we're not really given an idea of just how far that stubbornness extends BEFORE she brings down all hell on them.

While Chung-ho, on the other hand, within two episodes of meeting her, we know that she's a bit of a princess, is somewhat trapped by her life and expectations and not entirely happy about it, has definite feelings for Kang-chi and is bold enough to act on them but can't ignore the gap in their social status, and is a dutiful daughter who loves her parents.

The amount of screen time left to her has a lot to do with why she feels as well-fleshed-out as she is, but for lack of a better way to put my finger on it, I will just say Seo-hwa's character sketch feels a touch perfunctory, while Chung-jo's has a lot more detail about her personality independent of the same misfortunes befalling them both. Does that make sense?

(and I am really glad to be having these conversations with you, too - thank you for all your responses!)

Hello Pogo,

I saw that you responded not long ago, so I thought I would do it as well (respond soon).

1-- I LOVE dissecting Korean dramas because they have made me interested in cinema in general. I have been paying attention to more things since watching them, and that I think also has a lot to do with the fact that I read blogs and participate in conversations in a few of them. I used to be somewhat interested when I would watch US series (by the characters, the actors and actresses playing them), however, I was not paying attention to the writers, directors, staff, etc... Being involved in communities (mostly this one, tbh) where people are as addicted to dramas as I am (although, in my case, addiction would have to be defined. I don't watch that many dramas, I think last year I might have watched between 6 to 10 dramas, and some of them, I didn't start at the beginning, but because I was reading the comments beanies were leaving on OT, I had an idea of what was going on [those dramas are, AGD, IDID and I can't remember the others right now.)

The thing is however that when I watch a drama, I am IMMERSED, I could watch it raw (I did that with Faith, King of Dramas and I am doing that with GFB), read the detailed recaps a couple of bloggers provide (depending on the drama), then watch it on Viki later on when the subs are available (or on DF if Viki doesn't carry the drama, I am not a big fan of DF because of their business practices), and I always read the recaps here and more often than not participate by asking questions and writing what I only realize today is actually a commentary, my thoughts about the whole episode. Also, I take notes when I watch the episode, that is how come I am so detailed in my comments. I can have as much as a full page (long page) worth of notes that I address in my commentary. So, when I think about it, yes I like dramas and I am somewhat addicted, but not to actually consuming/viewing a lot of them. This is also why I remember so many details, I have carefully watched, the episode, thinking through it (I have noticed that I asked questions most people don't, like the name of the drums played in ep. 1, for example), I reflect a little bit before I write and so I basically "live" through the drama. It is like a literature class for me, but on film :-), with Korean actors and actresses (which I love). I was a philosophy and communications major, so I love most things that make me think and engage my emotions, and Kdramas are good (most of the time) for me in doing that.

I also love how hard Koreans work, how humble most of them are, and I love watching people who are not your everyday American (I currently live in the US). I have nothing against the US, mind you, it is just that they dominate the entertainment world already, and their products are disseminated all over the world, whether we like it or not. I like the idea that not only am I exposing myself to another culture and peoples, but also that in a small way, I am supporting them. I buy OSTs of my favorite dramas, and when the dramas are cheaper (about 1 year or so later), I plan on buying the dramas I want to have in my library (I have to wait until I can marathon said dramas to make sure there is nothing wrong with them, in case I need to return them, that is why I haven't bought any dramas yet. I haven't found the time to marathon them).

Like many people whose interest in SK arose primarily because of Kdramas, I am slowly learning Korean, watch many Korean programs on KBS World when I can, and plan on eventually taking classes on the Korean language when time allows, and plan on traveling to SK when the opportunity arises. So, I am saying all of this to say that my watching/viewing of Kdramas goes very deep, and it is just one of the ways that I stay connected with that country that both fascinates and interests me. I am from Cameroon in Central Africa, and SK used to be (50 years ago) where some African countries still are (unfortunately) today economically and otherwise. I want to learn from them about what they did/do right, and leave aside what is not so positive (meaning not copy it). The other draw for me is that their culture is a lot like many African cultures, so Africans who watch Kdramas (and yes, there are some who do, around the world) relate to many of the cultural aspects depicted in Kdramas because their culture is similar to our own in many ways.

I don't have anyone around me who loves and watches Kdramas, so this community means a lot to me. Yes, I am long winded (I prefer to view it as being detailed), and I like being first (if I can) so I can get a lot of traffic/people reading my posts and telling me what they think (there are so many posts per recap, that often I don't get to page 2 or more. It's not that I don't want to read them, just that there are not enough hours in the day and I need to sleep. I already cut on my sleep to watch dramas the way I do [my process] and write on blogs [mostly this one], I also need to be productive in real life and make a living).

I love being a part of a community that share the same interest and I think that fangirling can be mostly harmless and fun, and I love seeing people fangirl (and I do a little bit of my own :-) ). So when people respond to my comments, I take it to heart because I don't think they had to read my (usually) long winded comments, and they are kind enough to share their thoughts, exposing me to new thoughts and ideas, and I love and appreciate that. For all those reasons, I love the conversations we are having. I can move on to new recaps, however, I don't mind coming back to an old one if we are still hashing out some thoughts about an old episode or if someone keeps having questions. I have done that for some dramas (Faith, AGD, King of dramas and others), where we discussed things until there was nothing left to discuss. It felt like a complete conversation (that had a beginning, middle and an end), and I love those. In case you hadn't realize by now, I am a talker, that is how I bond, and I am a great listener as well. This was a long comment, but I felt led to explain why I appear the way I do on this blog. I tend to put my heart in everything I do, my work, my personal life (I try) and here too, my heart is in it, :-). I hope this helps in understanding me and why I seem to get carried away. I am harmless really, just a very vested person when I get interested in something, and I give as much back, I think.

I will respond to your comment now, which I meant to do in this post, sorry:-) (this post is very long, so I will answer in a new one).

0

Sorry Pogo, something came up, I will be back later to respond, as I promised...

Hello guys, and thank you so much for helping me understand this show better. This is always the part I look forward to the most as well (after watching the episodes): the being able to ask questions, get some answers, read other people's thoughts and POVs (thus having a different perspective at times in the process), the mental (and emotional) exercise of dissecting the episodes (sometimes to the smallest details :-) ), and the learning a new language (for me at least), culture, customs, etc... in the process, as well as being taken out of real life mentally (somewhat) when participating in these discussions/conversations.

I am currently busy (working right now), so I will have to be back later to respond. I am glad we have the rest of the week to share our thoughts on this drama and I already look forward to reading your responses, thank you!!!!!

P.S.: Pogo, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your long response. It looks like you didn't leave anything out :-). Those are the best responses (for me :-) ).

Hi Ivoire,

this is my guest for the 2nd part of no. 4: why SJ stop KC, even though KC is wearing the bracelet.

I do not think KC will turn to Gumiho because he is still wearing the bracelet. But, KC is still capable of killing the evil guy and his troops. If that happens, it will make KC a murderer and a wanted man. Then, it will be very difficult for the KC to continue on his journey and get respect from the town people. It will also be difficult for some of the viewers to root for him. Based on the legal and moral value, you should not take law into your hand and kill people, no matter how evil they are.....

But, off course, i was screaming to my monitor: kill them...kill them... ;)

I hope they will reveal this 10 days things soon and not wait till the end of the show.

Hello pinksapphire,

And thank you for sharing your thoughts/guess, which make sense, by the way. I had not thought of that (obviously :-) ).

About this, "Based on the legal and moral value, you should not take law into your hand and kill people, no matter how evil they are….." I don't know if that always applies in movies and dramas, even when it pertains to the hero. I think sometimes people want the hero to kill and they root for him to do so (based on the circumstances the hero has gone through, of course). I do see your point however... and I am glad KC ended up not killing anybody (so far).

And about this, "I hope they will reveal this 10 days things soon and not wait till the end of the show," I agree with you. I am very curious about "the waiting for 10 more days deal" and I also wish and hope that they will soon reveal why that was so important. Also, since KC has turned into a gumiho in this episode, if the 10 days deal still applies/is still in effect.

2 - Other people already explained some of this, but to add the term hyungnim: You might know Hyung from non historic dramas; it's what males call older males. The nim is a syllable that you can add while addressing someone to show more respect. For example males could say Noonim instead of Noona (older sister) or what's frequently used in historic dramas is abunim instead of abuji (father).
If you find out more about titles, and ways to address other people it'll help you get a better grasp of the relationships between people. You can find some here if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_honorifics

4 This is just my guess: Remember that one of the rules for Kang Chi's dad to find the GU Family Book was to not harm/kill humans? Maybe SJ was scared that Kang Chi would really kill him and I keep thinking killing somebody could have an effect on his gumiho status and/or his future journey to become human.

And I agree with you it was sad to see that people turned so easily on Kang Chi even though he helped them before!

Hello Smileforme,

2--Thank you so much for your added explanations, they really helped. I loved what you had to say about my 2nd set of questions, and thank you for the linky link, I looked at it and I will go back to it again.

4-- Also, good explanation for my 4th set of questions, and you made an excellent point.

3--Regarding this: "And I agree with you it was sad to see that people turned so easily on Kang Chi even though he helped them before!" Seriously, it was as if people had forgotten all the good that KC had done for them (and they probably did). It felt as if they had had amnesia, and I kept SMH. That was really hard to see...

[Potential spoilers]

I read on soompi that CJ/ Lady mother is actually going to use Kang Chi to regain status as a noble and Tae Soo is going to turn against him. Onto that spoilers, that's quite depressing, but expected since it was in the character description for Chung-jo. I just like her so much right now and I actually ship her with Kang-chi at the moment. It makes me sad that they're going to write her off like that. How about a just-as-amazing second female lead for a change huh? HUH??? Instead of just some plot device as the male lead first love turns evil mistress or whatever.

I agree, it would be refreshing if we have second leads who are as awesome (if not more) than the main leads and who don't turn vapid the next minute. Because there are people like that and Lee Yoo Bi is great in this drama so far I'd hate to see her turn into a character her (RL) mother usually plays.

What i anticipate happening is that mama Park will be rhe schemer and Chung-Jo unwittingly goes along with it, until she discovers the plot in ep 14 or so, then thats when she will have the struggle of restoring her fathers name vs. First love and she chooses the former.
Whoever called the Monk Resident Yoda above, bravo.

I was thinking that perhaps KC won't be able to recue CJ, CJ will think that he betrayed her, live in hell for a while, escale and then come back without faith/hope/whatever and more than willing to use people in order to have a god life again. Just an idea for her posible change of personality.

but she is known to make dramas with full of twists and full of crying scenes... plus touch the hearts of the viewers because of the learnings and make the viewers be in so much anger letting the baddies in glory in the almost majority of the drama...

the weak points can also be seen and like gf and most of us are saying, the writer should also write things in a more realistic and logical way,, :)

Hello Foulou,

And thank you for your answer. When I saw the name Kimura Kenji, I immediately thought of Kimura Shenji from Gaksital, and I didn't remember/thought of Kimura Kenji, his brother. I see that Kimura Kenji, (who was played in Gaksital by Park Joo-Hyung) is the same actor who played Han-no, the chief guard, in this drama. I didn't recognize him this time around, with the facial hair and his different attire. I see now why you referred to Han-no as Kimura Kenji. Thank you again for your help!

The YW/KC scene is so hilariously awkward when you realize he think she's a pretty guy. Kangchi~ do you really hang out with all your male friends like that???

I do like how KC told SJ he didn't care about his parent's story. He doesn't have much reason to. Even if SJ is trying to say he wasn't abandoned... looked like he was to me? Idk... Though I am hearing more from SJ. Again, nobody listens to a word he says.

Is the family really going to turn on him? Even evil mother seemed like she had come around. I guess we'll see. CJ I can see her using him a mile away, but everyone else... I'm not so sure yet. Though I guess he's so earnest in his devotion is going to make him an easy target to use.

Lord Park! Seriously show no need to rub it in what a great man he was... ;_;

Much better episode that the one before. I feel this is were the story actually starts.

For an "action" drama the action scenes do need a lot of improvement. Weird slowmows and the moves don't feel powerful enough. That said, everyone's acting seems to have improved. I like gumiho kc's hair better than kc's hair. Now that Kangchi has made promises to a bunch of people, how is the writer going to make us ship DW and KC. It would be nice if the writer spent a little more time thinking about how to transition to a point rather than just plainly getting to the point without caring about how to get there. As a whole, this episode was more enjoyable than the previous due the amount of things happening. Though there may be a bit of facepalms here and there this episode sure was addicting.

I really don't want to because I know they will not end up together but Lee Seung gi has wayyyyyyyy more chemistry with Lee Yoo Bi compared to Suzy. This drama is good and much easy to watch despite some average writing and directing. The story has great premise with super-hero plot that it could become an epic drama if the people behind camera get their act together.
And with this writer's track record, it would be no surprise if Kang-chi ends up with Chung-jo and Yeo-wol with Gon. In Baker King Kim Tak-gu(this writer's previous drama), YSY ended up with second female lead while Joo-won(second male lead) with Eugene.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm kinda annoyed when that happens. That always feels like false advertising to me! I mean, I know the eventual outcome of the story could be different from the premise, but when you promote the story to be tilted heavily towards one romance...and two leads...you really shouldn't! I'm usually fine with it, if say, they promote it as a square love (and all four 'leads' get equal screen time or narrative), but I find it too heavily tilted at this point in time.

I find we're more invested in CJ right now, simply because she's more in KC's life than Dam at the moment. Dam simply doesn't register with KC, and if she doesn't, it's hard to resonate with her, because the story is so heavily told from KC's POV.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I seriously doubt it it won't be KC/YW endgame. Seunggi won't get with the lesser star in Lee Yoo bi (as much as I like her) unless he and Suzy just can't make it work....which I doubt. Suzy isn't good enough to carry the chemistry by herself, but when SG has to show he "loves" YW we'll believe him. It's way too early to try to write them off. Especially with this writer's tendency to make her female characters into sudden idiots. Though at least CJ betrayal is pretty obvious already.

Part of mecwonders if he has like some major fanboy crush on Suzy and that is why he took the role...

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Well, in Baker King, the lead actor's first love interest ended up with the second male lead, and he found a new love, who falls in love with him while he's still pining for that first love. So if the same dynamics apply here, KC's first love with CJ won't work out and he will end up with a new girl, which would be YW.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

TS is going to like her also, if she ended up with anyone else it would be him. Gon is not a lead he will not have a story line. he is just coming along for the ride. Only a lead will get a lead partner. He is NOT a lead.

0

Required fields are marked *

It is true he is not a lead, but his acting is lead-caliber, and he is putting so much into his small part that it is, not surprisingly, fooling the fans doing love-lines. No need to be so adamant about it; everyone's just making lemonade out of lemons, including Sung Joon.

Required fields are marked *

LOL, acting ability does not have anything to do with it. is this your first Kdrama? its a formula that is followed. he is not a lead, he will not get the lead girl. no one is attacking him, its just the way it is..

0

Er, no, it's not my first kdrama, and my point was not that acting and lead/no lead are connected - if you have read anything I have said about the ridiculousness of most idols' acting you would know I do not believe that - but that his acting was misleading some fans. I am certainly aware of "the way it is" - what interests me more is how actors work - or don't work - within these rules.

I am loving Seung Gi with both his leading ladies... it just feels like two different dramas with each of them.. but equally lovely...

Also i love that both Chung-Jo and Yeo-wol have been written with a backbone!

Thanks for the wonderful recap, as usual, GF!

It was a lot harder for me to suspend my disbelief this episode than in the last 5 episodes - it felt too much of a rehash of episodes 1 & 2 for me, and I'd already invested so much emotion in his parents' tragedy that it felt like a joke when the deja vu happened!

Like mentioned in the recap, the seams of getting from A to B are becoming a lot more obvious and it breaks the storytelling a fair bit. I find it hard to immerse myself in the narrative and the characters when the storytelling flaws are just so tellingly there. Also, is it just me, or is the editing really awkward? I really hope the next couple of episodes flow better.

The other thing I just wanted to mention was that, like many people commented, it's a lot easier now to see the chemistry between CJ and KC rather than Dam and KC. Granted, this might change in the future (especially if the whole Park family turns against KC the same way Seol Hwa turned against his father when they find out he's a beast, which I can see happening) but I hope the writer invests some time thinking about this and plotting it out well. I like Suzy but I'm not quite as emotionally invested in her character as Yoo Bi's character, which is a bit of a pity. It does feel like her acting style is a bit out of sync from the rest of the drama (everyone is super dramatic, but she's fairly light on the drama and leans more towards sweet than intense).

Just watched this terrific episode, but have to say that I was taken out of the final 30 seconds by a flashback of Seung gi's days in 1N2D. It was the closeup of his gumiho claws and I immediately flashed to Seung gi hiding in the rocks and eating those cone-shaped crackers off his fingers, all pervy-like for one of the 1N2D missions. It was beyond funny to remember that scene and it did deflate some of the gumiho horror...

She's very free-spirited imo. Like don't care what other people think. It must be because the way she was raised. People mistakes her as a boy, let them be. She don't have the urge to correct it. She also never introduce herself as a boy as far as i remember. It was Gon who introduced her as "Young master Dam" to everyone else. I was interested to know her background story as well. She's the female lead but so far not many details we knew about her. I hope once she started the journey with KC we will know about her little by little.

Ehh..for me the chemistry between LSG and Suzy are just fine. They have a lot more times to spend together later on. Their story is just about to get started. I don't think YW is in love with KC yet. YW at this moment is still in a curious state. She's still figure out who KC is. Why the monk advised her to stay away from him. Of course she's fond of him because KC is the same kid she met when she's young who save her. But i agree about LSG and LYB's chemistry. If i don't read the synopsis i might give a chance to them.

The important thing here is how YW's reactions after seeing KC's transforming into a beast. SH's fainted and scared when she found the truth about WR. YW's personality is very different from SH so i can't wait to see how she deal with it. Btw,i am quite surprised she found out too soon. But i guess at least KC has a friend to discuss/figure out what the heck is going on with his body because he also didn't know the truth about himself yet. I'm glad he's not alone.

I personaly dont think the otp dont have chemestry maybe not as much right now for obvious reasons (kc is supposed to be inlove with cj for the first part) later on in the drama im sure they will have more chemestry and it will be more nice since it will take time which means more cute moments! I love the drama so far and I do agree with some of the action scenes needing some work but overall this drama is good!!!!!! Thank you for recap!!!cant wait for next week!!

I like girlfriday's description of the seams showing... I was trying to work out exactly what was putting the brakes on my love for this drama, and that's it. I find it especially noticeable in the action scenes. They just seem really...deliberate. Purposeful. Like it's a half-speed run-through before the actual shoot? I think that goes for some of the plot points as well. I still like it, but I really hope this show gets less obvious.

Was it just me that hope for KC to completely turned into Gumiho while trying to protect Papa Nice Guy? I just wanted those baddies to be eaten and done with. But then again, there wouldn't be much Kdrama would it? :P

I have to agree with not knowing how KC will fall in love with YW after seeing his devotion to CJ but thats also what I'm really looking forward to! Hopefully the writers will do as good a job with their love story as they did with his parents!!

I'm also wondering how YW will react to this sudden change in KC. Because if she is still afraid of dogs like she was when she was little she might fear him instinctively. The last scene kind of reminds me of the scene when they were little and how he calm down the rabid dog and then says he can go back to his family now. Maybe its her turn to calm the beast.

Also with the Monk I think maybe the bracelet kept the guhimo part of him at bay and maybe if he didn't give into that side of him before his 20th birthday it would remain dormant for the rest of his life and he would be human like his mother wanted?

Anyways these are just my guesses! I still have pretty high expectations for this series. There have been some inconsistencies and flaws but with the amount of heart the show has I think once we get into the main story line it will only get better!!

aww poor Han-no; finally gets an opportunity to play a good guy but is killed so early on. At this rate, it seems like everyone will die.
Too much things happening all at once. As of now we have the gu family book, revenge for biological parents, revenge for surrogate daddy and family, japanese invasion plot, YW's storyline and others to deal with. When will the gu family book come to play?
I wonder what would make KC want to be human, is it driven by love or acceptance by society? because it would seem with KC's true self being revealed to YW this early on, it is only normal for YW to accept him.
I'm seriously missing papa gu. If papa gu were really to be working under the evil villain, KC needs a heck lot of training by YW's dad and mentor if he wants to beat him and the evil villain.

I think you hit the nail on the coffin. The bracelet would make Kang Chi human as long as he wears it until he's 20 and that's to complete his mother's wish of him living as a normal person with a normal life.

BUT NOW IT'S BROKEN SOOOOOOOOOO KANG CHI WILL THEN TRY TO FIND THE LEGENDARY GUGAUI SEO!

That's an interesting theory about the bracelet, I can't wait till the monk explains everything. Maybe someone might listen to him for once.???

well... if he does not always appear out of nowhere and says things like you should do this or you should not do that~

And then just stand aside to watch how things unfold...

True. Thinking about that, he could have easily had a relationship with KC over the years and he might have been more willing to listen to him. Though KC doing what he said (ignore his family...twice) isn't very KC-like and he would never do it anyway.

guh hate the comments about appearances, good looking wtf. is that waht you concentrate on

ok now the evil has outdone himself. I don´t get why people are dummies and let it happen and dont spread the word of what really happened. this world needs twitter and camera phones. think if they had taken pictures....

I am almost convinced Lee Seung Gi and Sung Joon are going to be in some movie together and that´s why they are being tested out through a last-minute character addition. hope they dont kill Gon off now that they have seen it works.

but seriously, the fact Yeon Wool is a girl and he doesnt know? ....actually LKee Seung Gi´ s acting makes it believable! But not Suzys´. She is just terrible.

I wanted to like this more than I actually do and there are several reasons why:

~the magic is so random but it doesn't actually every help that much which drives me crazy!

~ (this is mentioned) no one listens to the monk. Hello - he's older than the hills, wise, and gives personal premonitions. Yo! Pay attention!

~Suzy does not transport me back in time. It's just Suzy in a costume.

~(pointed out by GF) most of ep 6 was a repeat of Kang Chi's parents' history. Sometimes I don't mind this (good stories often do this), but it's not working for me. Yet.

~Seunggi as a gumiho, I don't know. - I think it works better when his girlfriend is a gumiho.

hit the nail on the head ..... suzy is just just suzy in costume...

le sigh. She's quite possibly ruining any chemistry I might have felt between the lead's.....-_- boo.

She's got the same sortof-surprised look in every flipping screenshot. Oh, except for the one where she smiles cutely. And maybe she is slightly more surprised when she is watching KC turn into a ravening beast before her very eyes. Gaaahhh! Terrible acting.

Her acting is the only thing about this drama that doesn`t work for me!

The good thing is ,for now, she doesn`t have that much screen time!

Be grateful that it's at least moved on from gormless (aka the look she had at the end of episode 3, when things were supposed to be romantic with the face-touching and the suave close-quarters holding)

i TOTALLY agree with you about the plot thing! there are actually a lot of flaws in it and things that happen because the producers wanted it to get the result they wanted but not because it is what WOULD happen in real life. but it's true, at the end of the day, we still care so I guess it's okay but I wish i could stop wondering why this or that happened and only come up with 'because it's a drama'.

I saw the first photo with guhimo in blue and red and suddenly thought "Superman". Ah, blue and red is permanently hero colors in my psyche.

Can't they have killed off the silly mother instead of all the good guys? Silly woman is so gonna stay alive to make Kangchi's life hell...

I suppose you have to keep the evil baddies alive at episode 5...but it's so annoying when all the good guys are dropping dead like flies.

So strange to watch an old ep of 1N2D with SG, and then on to this. Haha.

I'd love to love the drama for two reasons, the beautifully portrayed tragic love story between Kang Chi's parents which got me interested in continuing to watch, never mind I thought the relationship and their personalities could have been explored much deeper.

And then the fact that there had been such a lot of room for the PD to explore plot-wise and relationships-wise. Had been. It's such a pity that the PD chose to corner him/ herself by repeating the same narrative on the son as well. So-jung could have been the PD's persona - reminding not only Kang Chi but us all of the dreadful similarities happening to both Kang Chi's father and himself. Unless we are all blind to the plot, we certainly do not need the grim reminder.

It's exasperating to have the PD present Jo Gwan-woon as such a one-dimensional character when so much more depth into the character could have been explored and it almost sends me into hysterics over the strange portrayal that Jo Gwan-woon has been spending a good two decades going around on a murderous spree just so he could conveniently deflower young girls. Yikes.

Then there's the really strange behaviour of Yeon Wool and Gon. Aren't they supposed to protect Lord Park? Then why are they always hiding on rooftops, practicing sword play in the courtyard or getting plain jealous (Gon over YW and YW over KC) like a couple of teenagers (even if one of them is)? I wouldn't even go into how convenient it is for Lord Park to die just so Kang Chi has a reason to run amok - I only wished he hasn't been required to die so soon.

This doesn't mean I'm a hater. In fact, I like the show despite its obvious flaws (plot, immature acting). I see a lot of potential in the storyline and do hope the PD will buck up and improve the story here henceforth. Acting-wise I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Hey JK! Long time no see, I remember your awesome analyses on the Arang posts and it's good to see you here :)

Relationships-wise, I love the connections Kang-chi had with all his family (and the bickering with Gon is priceless, I think the PD knows we all just want to see Sung Joon and Lee Seung-gi together) but you're right that the plot is rather belabouring itself, and I don't like to think of what will be done to Chung-jo to make her unlikable and signal to the viewers that we're supposed to be on the Yeo-wool/Kang-chi train.

And while I rather enjoy Gon, I do agree about him and Yeo-wool - some protectors they are!
