Gu Family Book: Episode 2
by girlfriday
What a lovely way to start a story. I almost never get this invested in backstory, because it’s really hard to be patient when you know that what you’re watching is the opening act and not the headliner. But our hero’s origin story is as sweeping and romantic and narratively rich as any main event, which makes it fun, and heartbreaking, and completely engrossing. It’s a pair of episodes that could very well be its own drama, and Show already had me at 1, but by 2 I’m a goner.
Gu Family Book moved from last place to first between Episodes 1 and 2, which is a good sign. It led with 12.2%, with God of the Workplace coming in close at 12.1%, and Jang Ok-jung falling behind at 9.1%.
EPISODE 2 RECAP
The narrator brings us back deep into the mountains, where the one who guards this forest has just crossed paths with a woman on the run. “Their sad legend begins now…”
In the Moonlight Garden, the monk warns our mountain guardian gumiho Wol-ryung against involving himself with the lives of humans, let alone wanting to become one. He adds with a tremor in his voice that it’s no mere minion on his trail either—the famed Dam Pyung-joon is after them, and he’ll stop at nothing until he’s found his target.
But Wol-ryung is smitten through and through, and when Seo-hwa tells him that she can’t in good conscience remain here for him to be tried as a traitor along with her, he just smiles at her silly concern and assures her that no one can harm her while he’s at her side.
He holds up a giant sack to say that she must eat to gather her strength, and holds up a rabbit in one hand and a tortoise in the other for her to choose. Ha. She tries her best not to seem ungratefully horrified, and quickly grabs the peach.
Knowing her preference now, he runs back up to the peach tree and returns with an entire sack filled with peaches, wondering if maybe that won’t be enough to fill her up. When she stops him by grabbing his hand, he melts at the touch.
When he sees her enjoying a particular flower, he shows up with a giant bundle of them, and when he sees that she likes the butterflies, he opens up his sack and out fly hundreds of them, to her delight. How adorable. He’s like a little puppy, just with a magical santa sack.
When he sees her lost in thought and sad, he takes her up to the top of the mountain to show her the amazing view, and beams when she starts smiling again. He’s killing me with the you-smile-I-smile thing. It’s too cute.
At night they light a fire in the cave and she asks if he has any family and how long he’s lived here. He says it’s been too long to keep count (way to be evasive) and that he’s all alone.
She tells him about her brother and the servant who’s like a sister to her, and seeing her distress, Wol-ryung asks if knowing where they are and how they’re doing will make her smile again. With tears in her eyes, she asks why he’s so good to her, and he just says very plainly, “Because I want to do everything for you. Because that’s my heart right now.”
But when he goes to the village, he finds her brother still hanging on the gallows. Gibang madam Soo-ryun goes to see our baddie Jo Gwan-woong to ask him to take the boy’s body down, but he says it’ll remain there as a warning to all the townspeople not to cross him.
Suddenly a servant interrupts to announce haltingly that the corpse… the corpse… has up and disappeared.
Wol-ryung returns to the Moonlight Garden where Seo-hwa is shaking in anticipation. She asks for word of her brother and Dam, and he looks back at her searching eyes. Flashback to moments ago—when he buried her brother’s body in the woods.
He can’t bring himself to tell her the truth, and says that they’re both doing well. She hugs him in relief, tears streaming down her face as she says she can finally breathe now. His face crumbles and he can’t bring himself to hug her back.
She pulls away and apologizes for her rash behavior, and he raises his hand to her face, to wipe away a tear. He turns to walk away…
…but then turns right back and swoops in for a kiss. Is that where that move comes from? Because if I didn’t know any better, I’d say this gumiho watches dramas.
They kiss as little green lights circle them, and as he pulls away he asks, “Will you marry me?” Seo-hwa: “I’m the daughter of a traitor.”
Again, he asks, “Will you marry me?” She says that she’s a runaway gisaeng. But he just repeats, as if to say I don’t care… “Will you marry me?” She hugs him in a wave of tears, and he kisses her again. Awwwww.
Next thing we know, the monk’s got whatchoo-talkin’-’bout-Willis face as Wol-ryung asks for the Gu Family Book so he can be human and get hitched. He can’t understand why someone would want to give up all his power just to do something so common and annoying as marry a human woman.
Wol-ryung argues that he doesn’t know what it’s like to live a thousand long years all alone, and would like nothing more than to live a full normal life. The monk asks if he’s told Seo-hwa that he’s a gumiho, but Wol-ryung says she’ll never have to know if he can become human first. Why am I seeing a gaping hole in your theory there, buddy?
The monk doesn’t have the book—only a book about The Book—and it says that no one has ever seen the Gu Family Book, but if he doesn’t take a life for a hundred days, helps any human being who asks for his help, and never shows his gumiho face to anyone during that time, the book will appear before him.
But there’s also a catch, of course, if he fails to complete the trial. He’ll lose any chance of ever becoming human, and he could also become a demon for the next thousand years. Whoa.
The monk begs him, as a friend, to reconsider it one more time. “You’re the one who might end up hurt in the end.” But Wol-ryung says it’s the first time in a thousand years that his heart is racing, and he doesn’t want to wait a thousand more.
So in the Moonlight Garden, Wol-ryung and Seo-hwa marry each other, and spend their honeymoon in a cave… which I swear is nicer than it sounds.
Meanwhile, Jo Gwan-woong and his men find Seo-hwa’s brother’s grave, and he realizes belatedly that she’s still alive. It still doesn’t explain how she would’ve carried his body all the way into the woods, and a thought occurs to him…
Months pass in wedded bliss, and Wol-ryung still gushes every time Seo-hwa calls him her husband or kisses him on the cheek. Today she insists on going out alone to gather some plants, and gives him his packed lunch with a kiss.
The monk comes by to check on Wol-ryung, who has eleven days left on his vegetarian diet. He says other than the delicious rabbit that passes by to taunt him every so often, it hasn’t been too unbearable.
The monk takes a bite of the lunch that Seo-hwa packed and immediately spits it out in horror. Wol-ryung says sheepishly that she’s still a little off with the cooking skills, and the monk just sighs that love must really be grand. Ha.
He came to give Wol-ryung a dagger carved from a hundred-year old tree, as an insurance policy against becoming a demon for a thousand years. Why do I not like the look of that thing?
Of course the one day that Seo-hwa heads out into the woods alone is the day that someone spots her. Damnit.
Dam Pyung-joon is ready to give up on the search for the gumiho, and tells Jo Gwan-woong that he’ll no longer waste government resources on his personal errands (oooh, he’s the first person we’ve seen stand up to this guy). But just then, a minion runs in to say that they’ve found Seo-hwa alive.
Wol-ryung returns home and calls out to Seo-hwa, but she’s not there. She finally senses someone watching her, and starts running.
The signal flares, and Dam Pyung-joon charges toward them with more men, while Wol-ryung races through the woods from the other side. Seo-hwa gasps as she runs, “Help me.”
Seo-hwa barely manages to evade the man following her, only to run right into another group headed straight for her. She runs again, and Wol-ryung grabs her out of sight just in time.
He tells her it’s okay, and holding her close, he makes the ivy grow around them like a shield, masking them in broad daylight. That is so cool.
The men all run past, and when they’ve gone, he raises the ivy and they step out. Only… they haven’t all gone, and Dam Pyung-joon is sitting on his horse, staring right at them. Oh crap.
“That’s an amazing skill you have there.” He asks what Wol-ryung is that he can control the elements that way, and Wol-ryung counters that he and his wife have nothing to do with them. Dam Pyung-joon replies civilly that if she isn’t Seo-hwa then he’ll apologize, and asks if they’d like to come along without a fight.
Wol-ryung searches for some way out, and makes eye contact with Dam Pyung-joon’s horse. Whatever signal he zaps sends the horse into a frenzy, and they take off running in the other direction.
But it’s not long before they run right into a trap, waiting for them. The men hurl chains around Wol-ryung’s limbs and surround them in no time. They bring him to his knees and start beating him to a bloody pulp, as they drag Seo-hwa away.
She screams for him and he looks up at her, the monk’s words ringing in his ears—he can’t take a life, or show his gumiho face…
But he can’t just sit there and watch them drag his beloved away to her death, and the rage takes over. Suddenly blue lights rise up from the ground and surround the men holding his chains.
Claws come jutting out from his hands, now covered in white fur. With a roaring growl he sends the men to the ground, and the rest of the people, including Seo-hwa, turn back in shock.
All they can see is a figure holding one of the men up in the air like a little ragdoll… and then he’s dropped, and Seo-hwa gasps to see Wol-ryung’s true beast face.
His hand drips with blood, and then she watches in horror as the rage takes over and he yaaaanks the beating heart out of one man and chomps down on the pumping artery of another. Holy massacre, batman.
He lets out this roooooaaaar that sends everyone to the ground, and Seo-hwa stands there, frozen, as the leaves swirl around her and the man she loves becomes a monster before her eyes.
He comes back to his senses and starts to walk toward her with pleading eyes, and as she shrinks back, he can hear her thoughts: “No, don’t come!” She finally lets out a piercing shriek: “Noooooo!” and faints at his feet.
He carries her back to their home and she’s just as frightened when she awakes, but he calls out to her in his soft voice, “It’s me, Wol-ryung,” and she asks tearfully, “Is it really you?”
Wol-ryung: “This is my true face. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He collapses in bloody exhaustion. But she can’t believe it’s really him and runs away, telling herself that it’s not Wol-ryung.
And then… she walks right into the soldiers’ camp to turn herself in. Oh noes.
The sparkly blue lights heal Wol-ryung’s wounds, but he’s still lying in a heap when the monk runs in to revive him. The first thing he asks is for the monk to check on Seo-hwa, who must be very frightened, and the monk can’t believe he’d think of love even now.
He heads out to find her, and turns back to remind Wol-ryung about that dagger carved from the hundred-year old tree, and tells him to use it at the right moment.
At the camp, Seo-hwa is made to kneel before Jo Gwan-woong, who slaps her across the face and says that her brother and servant died because of her.
She looks up in shock and says that can’t be, but Jo Gwan-woong is only too pleased to tell her that Dam hanged herself and that he personally tied the noose around her brother’s neck. He orders Dam Pyung-joon to use her to lead them to the gumiho, and then kill them both.
Wol-ryung wakes up the next morning and takes a drink from the river. When he raises his head, he’s surrounded by soldiers all over again. He just stares blankly for a moment, not understanding how humans could have found this place, and it’s only when Seo-hwa is dragged out from behind them that it sinks in.
He asks why she’d betray him, and she counters that he lied first, about her family, about his true nature. He swears that it was because he couldn’t stand to see her sad, but she’s already convinced that it was all lies.
“I believed you—that everything you said, everything you did, was sincere.” He calls out her name, but she turns away, and aaaaugh the pain in his eyes…
As a tear falls, we flash back to the monk’s warning: if the woman he loves doesn’t betray him, he doesn’t have to worry about turning into a demon for a thousand years. But if she does, then the only way to stop from turning into a demon is to stab her in the heart with that hundred-year old dagger. Dude. Worst catch ever.
He takes out the dagger and runs to her, calling out her name, but Dam Pyung-joon stabs him right in the gut as he reaches her. He puts a hand on her shoulder and asks, “Why did you do it? I loved you. I loved you so.”
They both cry, and Dam Pyung-joon hesitates. But Jo Gwan-woong shouts at him to strike. As Wol-ryung’s beast face shows itself, his claws pierce Seo-hwa’s shoulder and she screams out in pain.
Dam Pyung-joon charges with his sword, and then delivers the killing blow. Seo-hwa whispers, “Wol-ryung…” as blue lights stream out of his body, suspending him in midair, until he vanishes.
The lights fly away and disappear.
Dam Pyung-joon is left behind to kill Seo-hwa on his own, and the monk arrives screaming for Wol-ryung. He crumbles at the scene, demanding to know what happened to his friend, who never harmed anyone and guarded these mountains with care.
He blames Seo-hwa for all of this, wailing that all this happened because Wol-ryung wanted to become a person. He cries that he would’ve been human in just ten days: “All of this… because he loved you!”
Trembling, she looks down at his blood on her hands. And then the second bout of vomiting in two days sends her running off… which of course in dramaland can only mean that she’s pregnant.
Dam Pyung-joon sends her bloody hairpin to Jo Gwan-woong as proof that he killed her, and the creepy bastard actually seems to have been in love with her, from the way he haunts her old house and sees visions of her smiling and laughing in the past.
The blue lights carry Wol-ryung’s body deep into the woods, and the forest grows around him to lay him to rest.
Seasons change, and the Moonlight Garden remains quiet and undisturbed.
We return to the gisaeng house, where a very pregnant Seo-hwa is screaming and wailing for them to kill her before she gives birth to a monster child. But Soo-ryun has a promise to keep to the person who asked her this favor, and refuses to let her die.
Every kick from the baby scares the life out of her, and she finally decides to sneak out on her own. She treks back through the woods and hears Wol-ryung’s voice calling her name.
She returns to the Moonlight Garden, where she’s flooded with happy memories of her days with Wol-ryung. The labor pains begin and she screams as more memories flash by, and she gives birth to their child. The blue lights return and swirl towards the cave…
The monk sees them too, and looks up in wonder: “Wol-ryung?”
Seo-hwa gathers up her resolve and unwraps the sickle she carried with her. She can’t see the baby’s face in the dark, and thinks to herself: “I’m sorry, Wol-ryung. Forgive me for this is all I can do. I’m truly sorry, Wol-ryung.”
She raises her arm, ready to strike, when the blue lights appear around her, one by one. She freezes and their energy pushes the clouds away to reveal a full moon. The light shines down into the cave, revealing the face of her child.
She stops cold at the sight, and tears begin to fall. She reaches for the baby. “You’re not… a monster. You weren’t a monster. You weren’t a monster…”
She wails now to know the truth, far too late.
We fade out, and then fade back in a short time later with a new character, PARK MU-SOL (Uhm Hyo-sub), who’s enjoying an afternoon by the river with a few friends.
He hears an infant’s cry in the distance, and finds a basket floating along in the river. He jumps in to retrieve it, and finds a baby inside who opens his little eyes and smiles up at him.
Just then, our monk comes upon the party and tells Mu-sol that the child is a blessing, and that if he raises this child, great fortune will befall him. His friends all eagerly join in naming the child Kang-chi, after “river” (kang) and “thrown away” (chi). They give him the surname of his servant, Choi, who argues that he’s still unmarried.
They all agree that Choi Kang-chi is a great name and the monk asks Lord Park—will he raise this boy?
As we pan up, the narrator tells us that here deep in the mountains, Wol-ryung and Seo-hwa’s sad love came to an end, “But another new legend was beginning…”
Park Mu-sol looks down at the child. “Kang-chi. Choi Kang-chi.” And then he breaks into a warm smile at the boy in his arms.
COMMENTS
Aw. Goosebumps. What a great way to bookend the prelude. Such epic feels, with the grand sweeping narration and the sense that we’re just cracking the surface of a legendary tale. I’m really enjoying the director’s whimsical touch on the supernatural elements of this world, and the universe feels like it has rules; we just don’t know them all yet. The execution feels assured, like there’s a full world and a story waiting to be told with an artistic touch, which makes me really excited for what’s to come.
I’m thoroughly surprised at how solid the opening story was, of Kang-chi’s parents and their tragic romance. I was so invested that I could easily watch a separate drama starring those two characters. Despite saying that, of course, I do think it’s the perfect length to cut the intro to two episodes, instead of filling a quarter of your drama with child stars, which is the norm. I’m so much more invested this way with the tragic love story between Kang-chi’s parents and Wol-ryung’s dream unrealized, to then pick up with Kang-chi as a young man who will walk the same path.
It’s a simple idea—to have his parents’ happy human/gumiho love unrealized and to root for Kang-chi to do differently. But execution matters a great deal in that setup because if we’re not heartbroken at Seo-hwa and Wol-ryung’s tragedy then the idea of Kang-chi changing that same inevitable fate doesn’t carry that much weight. But I found their story so sweet and moving that despite knowing that they’d have to end tragically, I still wished for a different outcome. That’s great storytelling, and it makes me not want to leave the enchanted forest and the Moonlight Garden for fear the magic will dissipate.
And while the romance was great, it was really the conflict between Wol-ryung’s human and gumiho nature that really resonated, all the way to the point when Seo-hwa plans to kill their baby thinking it’ll be a monster. The fact that it takes seeing their very human child for her to realize how much she misunderstood Wol-ryung is such a bittersweet tragedy. You can’t blame her for being horrified when she sees him turn into a beast who yanks the still-beating hearts from people’s chests, but it’s still a crushing blow when she shrinks back from him in disgust and horror—I like how dark that is, and the fact that the beast/human nature will be a central theme in the story with both generations.
I’m excited for the introduction of a mythology that will carry us into the hero’s story, that we will in some sense know better than he will. The beast/human dichotomy is a familiar theme explored through all kinds of supernatural lore (vampires, werewolves, anything undead), and is as timeless as it is primal—because it asks the most fundamental questions about what it means to be human. There’s just something undeniably powerful about the idea of someone who’s lived a thousand years and could live a thousand more, wanting nothing more on this earth than human love. It’s so simple, and yet the stuff of epic tragedy or heroic transformation. I can’t think of a more legendary place for a hero’s journey to begin.

I have two questions: does anybody think that WR didn't know how to read, and so that was why he asked the monk to read and tell him about the Gu family book? I am asking because I read it somewhere. That doesn't make sense tome because WR was the one who found the book in the 1st place, so I feel that he must have known how to read. Also he was the one who wrote the name of the brother on the wooden stick, so it seems to me that he does know how to read and write. I was just curious about that.
Also, who do you guys think took SW to the gisaeng house and asked for the favor? Do you think it might have been the sheriff, Dam Pyeong-Joon ? He seemed to be someone who would have some compassion (since he didn't kill SH). DPJ also looked like he knew SH was pregnant when she was throwing up in the woods.

This is not very relevant for the drama, however I couldn't help but wonder if CJH was holding a real rabbit both times in this episode. If anyone has a thought on that, please let me know, that rabbit looked so real...

@Ivoire
1) I think it was DPJ who brought SH to the gisaeng house. He was supposed to kill her, but like the hunter in Snow White, didn't and led her to a safe house. Instead, he gave her hairpin to GW as 'evidence' that he had killed her.
2) He knew she was pregnant too - hence brought her to the gisaeng.
3) As for the rabbit, I think it's real. There was a BTS showing a real rabbit and WR jumping down from a tree and catching it.

Somehow it would be nice if Wol Ryung reappears again. (Choi Jin Hyuk <3) But I think it's too early to assume that kind of plot twist. (I can only dream)

I think he will. The synopsis says that he'll be on the dark side. After reading the recaps, I think I know how it'll happen. Since he did not succeed in becoming human and killing SH, he will now become evil for a 1000 yrs! I hope that KC can turn him around without having to wait 1000 yrs!

I think since his evil and betrayed and all, he is likely going to warn his son about falling in love with a human.
He may even find it necessary to kill her to protect his own.

I'm wondering about Seo-hwa too, since she's alive so far.
Fingers crossed that the rest of this drama lives up to its early episodes, because I haven't had a sageuk to love since Arang, and if this show may lack Shin Mina (even an improved Lee Yeon-hee is no Mina), I have some hope.

Is there a pile of broken hearts out here that I can toss mine? Ah! I bawled so hard for Wol Ryung... why is fate so cruel. This maybe the first time that I cried for a backstory.
I think he will be back as a demon to lure his son to dark side or save him. Whichever it is, it'll be awesome. Wol Ryung's death is just not right in a lot of ways.

True to both comments - but I can't think of anything that LSG has been in that hasn't tickled me. Love him, his cup of boyish charm runneth over!
I must admit I haven't been so immediately invested in a drama since City Hunter and to have JB & GF tag-teaming the recaps is just icing on the Kdrama cake!

A sweeping statement indeed. People should stop saying xxx is better , xxx should have been casted instead etc. The fact is that Seunggi had been cast long ago at the onset. It's his drama and there was not even any contenders in consideration. Plus it's not as if Kang Chi has appeared and Seunggi is doing badly. Don't judge him without giving him a chance to blow u away.

It's always funny to see "my bias would be better then the person cast" for NO reason at all other than being upset their bias isn't in the drama. And yeah, the writer wanted Seunggi. It was never once up for anyone else unless he declined.

I think LSG would work here better he has this boyish charm. And you wold hardly think that he could be evil with that smile. But the supernatural side to him takes you totally by surprise coz u knw it will actually crave human liver...
I actually like the disparity between his " i am soooo cute i can make you forgive me for eating all ur ice cream if i smile" and ' ooooo human liver ' Hannibal act.

Hello slfowie,
I remember commenting and responding to your posts on one or more drama recaps, I just can't remember which ones right now, however I do remember your screen name :-). I just wanted to say that I love and I agree with what you have explained. It makes total sense to me. I too look forward to watching/seeing the dichotomy between good KC and bad/struggling/evil/beast like KC. I think it might be the 1st time that LSG tries such a role (potential of being bad or evil, one of the "bad" guys), and I hope fervently that he will do well. He did impress me with his portrayal of JH in TK2Hs, and I really, really, really hope that he will do it again here :-)
Good to "see" you here again. It looks like we will be camping on the same drama recap thread again. Now that I think about it, were you one of the people with whom we talked about making clones (in a factory) of Eun Shi-kyung (sp?) from the TK2Hs?

Hi Ivoire ,
I remember you too! is great to talk/ see you again. I think i am gonna enjoy seeing the struggle, if its done right. But seeing how he was pretty good ( ok let me admit it he was AWESOME) at portraying a" i am all right, i am strong.....but i am totally breaking apart" guy think he will do the character justice.
Plus i kinda like the idea of the hero having this drop of evil- u knw i want to eat human liver, in him. I think is gonna make the story even more interesting. Coz he doesn't just have bad guys he has to win but he as to win himself to...
And yes i am the same person who talked bout making clones....i am watching his show...by watching i mean reading the recaps n hoping my computer loads the shows....

Me too! I just wanted them to be happy. He was so adorably sweet in his love for her. They were so happy for those few short months.
His face when he realized she had betrayed him and her face after seeing her baby and knowing that her husband wasn't a monster. This episode gutted me.
But it was the perfect setup for our hero to realize his father's wish and find a different fate with his love then that of his parents. The groundwork is there. Now the main drama just better live up to its fabulous beginning.

Exactly this. I hate her so much for betraying him that I can't even feel sorry now that I know what she said to the baby - that part wasn't subbed when I watched, but it was pretty clear she was wavering on something. Still she abandoned the child.
Wol Ryung was perfect to her. I will never forgive. Someone said JW should have been AppaHo, and the best part of that would have been all the opportunities we'd have had to tell Baby Mama 'Gaksital will never forgive you!'
Still thinking about his delighted smiles and his giggles, with that deep voice. Giggles. GIGGLES. I will not remember his tears. No.

I'm with you here. By the end of this episode I found it hard to connect sympathetically with Seo Hwa's character.
Everything Girlfriday said about the world of the drama rang true. But throughtout these episodes the Seo-Hwa character alternated between being compelling and really frustrating. Compelling: her decisive and principled stand against entering into a life of prostitution. Frustrating: as she's fleeing that fate, the way she wants to stop and have a long, emotional talk - JUST as soon as the pursuers are getting close. Compelling: her romance with Wol-Ryung. Frustrating: her indecisive and unprincipled vascillations about his identity and their child. Letting the creep who murdered her father convince her to betray the man who had saved her life and showed her nothing but goodness. From crying out his human name as the lights carry him away (indicating she really did accept him for who he was?). Then hearing the monk explain that he was a guardian spirit who never initiated any fight and who was willing to give up ageless immortality to spend a limited life with the woman he loved (validating his goodness)... To her trying to abort their unborn child because it would be a 'monster'. From her repeatedly asking for his forgiveness (implying her acceptance of him as a moral being?)... while she's about to kill her defenseless newborn because it's a monster (implying she doesn't accept Wol-Ryung or think he's a moral being?). Ugh. The monk was right about some women being more trouble than they're worth.
And I could understand her being conflicted. But make. up. your. mind, Seo-Hwa. And maybe stop to think about how many people's lives you're willing to see sacrificed on the altar of your indecisiveness. But even more frustrating was why - even though I ended up feeling Seo-Hwa wasn't at all worthy of Wol-Ryung - I still wanted so badly for him to find his happily-ever-after with her. *Make. up. your. mind, Gidget.* And why am I really hoping to see a prequel starring these two characters? Drama, you're messin' with my mind.
Still, frustrations aside, I thought the first two episodes were gripping and stunningly beautiful.

Seo-hwa IS really frustrating, which is a writing inconsistency in several ways - (and the preview for ep 3 makes it clear she's doing this because she thinks her child should grow up around 'normal' people instead of the gibang) but her actually wavering on Wol-ryung because of the lies/omissions is kinda understandable, even if I want to shake her (and did she still love him, anyway? I think she did, even with all she did to betray him.
But he was SO ADORABLE, and I'm hoping this isn't the absolute end for OmmaHo and AppaHo.

See, my gut reaction is to be pissed at Seo-hwa, but think a second. She finds out, after months of living blissfully in ignorance, that her husband lied to her. About the last two people in her family. On their own, I don't think the revelation of monsterhood or lying or the deaths of Dam and her brother would have done it, but all together? After seeing him chaw on peoples' necks? I mean, in the same situation I'd like to think I'd see the utter anguish on his face and forgive him, but I just don't know. I think it's a realistic and relatively well-written reaction.
Now, I don't see why he couldn't have just told her, and then been all "ok, off to pray for 100 days so I can come back and be human with you!" But I guess then we wouldn't have a story.

@Gidget @ pogo
Personally, while I'm disappointed at SH's reaction, I think I can understand it and even accept it. The fact that she's confused IS a sign of good writing. The fact that you're compelled one moment and frustrated another shows in some ways that its realistic writing. If she had been clear-headed and did not betray WR, would have been unrealistic and also against her character. This also gives the story a chance for Yeo Wool NOT to go the same way and give KC a chance at love.
SH wanting to abort the baby and kill it is not unnatural if you see it from another angle. Because we love WR - he's good looking and was so sweet to her - so we think that she should not betray him and keep the innocent child. But put yourself in SH's shoes.
Imagine that an alien came to earth and 'disguised' himself as one of us. He's good looking and very charming. Even saved you from harm. BUT you didn't know he was an alien, and all your life, you were told that aliens are demonic, and cunning and that they seek to 'eat your liver'. You fell in love with that alien and made love with him. Then one day, you saw him in his horrifying alien form, ripping out ppl's hearts with blood dripping from his mouth, etc...
And horror of horrors, you realise that u are carrying his child! How can you be sure that the child will look human and not alien? Remember, back then there was no ultra sound. Won't you be reviled that you are carrying an alien child? His genes are in that child! I know I would be terrified and horrified thinking that I'm carrying a beast in my womb! I've carried 4 children, and each time, I look forward to birthing them and seeing them. But if I think that they are not going to be fully human is totally going to freak me out, esp when I think that the alien has tricked me into mating him!

crazyajummafan I totally agree with you. There are times when i want to shake her and yell "but he loves you! and wants to become human for you". but then i also realize that for her what ever they shared probably looked a lie, why not? A non human entity, lied to you about the most important things- her family is dead, and her only other family member is something that is used to scare children. How can someone trust the other person after going through the betrayal?
As for her trying to kill her kid- she saw him killing people in one of the most gruesome way possible. And there could also be a possibility that the child she is carrying will have his genes- be a killer, eater of human liver... And her being in the era she is in, what other option does she have? She has been brought up to believe that gumiho's are evil and must be killed before they killed you. And in a way that is just what she sets out to do....

sure, i can see why she'd doubt him- that's a given, but i'm still a romantic so i kept waiting for her to go back and realize how much Wol Ryung loved her (i do think that i wouldn't have been able to stand seeing all the blood-really squeamish-but then again, i could've closed my eyes and problem solved). besides, would she rather that he was a human so that they could both die? (i think not). I would've liked more faith from her
It'd be hard for me to forgive her just for breaking WR's heart like that, but then she wants to kill her baby! How could she even think of that?!?! what did that baby ever do to her (i'm a firm believer that all babies at birth are innocent and angelic(even if they do look like really old really wrinkled really red people)
so because i'm a lover of all things romantic and happy, imma go into Denial with a capital D (no really, it has a capital 'd' :P) and make up my own ending, if only for Wol Ryung's sake. Here it is, but its gonna be long (please comment on how to improve it while keeping the two together):
So she runs away into the forest and thinks about what if it were her thats not human. The monk shows up as she's thinking who tells her everything about him. The truth of his nature, what he's been doing for her. What he just sacrificed to save her, and why he lied. Basically, how much he loves her. *insert some scenes, not shown before, of what he did for her-some without her knowing it was him, like some hidden gestures that made he life so much nicer*
Even with this, she's still undecided, but the monk says that even though he can take her to where Wol Ryung is but she has to make up her mind really quickly and come to the proper meeting place but as she's about to reach the site another search party(?) comes upon and recognizes her. They wound her (arrows, maybe) and leave her for dead
She lays on the ground and realizes the full extent of her feelings at the thought of not seeing her hubby again and manages to drag herself to where the monk is, and they promptly go to the cave
The lovers are reunited and alls well that ends well ^^
but then they find out she's pregnant and are even happier. However, the midwife they found for her is evil and purely interested in how much money she can earn by selling the baby. So when Seo-hwa's sleeping/passed out from the effects of labor the midwife takes the baby and gives it to an accomplice. Wol-ryung of cource finds out and goes after the baby after turning her into some creature
The accomplice is worried about his fate if Wol Ryung finds him with the baby (since he didn't see his face yet) so he throws the baby into the river and runs to town.
The rest is the same as the drama, so it can (kinda?) go on as planned.

Maybe the monk spoke to her beforehand and they decided this was best? And if she were connected to him, he would have probably been shunned anyways for being half gumiho and the son of a gisaeng.
It seemed way to convenient that the monk just happened to walk along, so I'm assuming he knows? Someone has to tell him when he's older after all. ;)
I think the monk also tells Suzy to avoid having a relationship with the person she meets on a night with a crescent moon...

I believe she could not bring herself to face her baby, knowing how she betrayed his father... she was both a proud, strong willed yabang girl as she was a weak, poor stamina ( lol always stumbling when she runs away from something, which makes sense since being yabang she is probably very lady like and girly etc )..
Not too bright either, since she never wondered how amazing her hubby is, being able to pull off so many wonderful things and took him for granted... hahaha
The monk seems to sense that the guardian spirit has somehow returned to the forest ( all those blue fairy lights) and seems to want to con that Lord Park to bring up someone else's child... which is the decision that makes me feel more puzzled about, because if Wol-ryung is his best buddy, and this child is somehow going to become a half-guardian etc isn't it better for him to bring up the child, to educate him etc?

Did the monk actually float the baby to the party? It seems to be awfully convenient to have him pop up and gush about the Boy In The Basket. I think he promised to help her get out of there (and never come back) and to save the child of his best friend.
With the exception of the one screechy English song, the backgrounds and BGM have made a lush backdrop to the upcoming story.

I was upset with Seo-hwa for awhile thinking what she did was nonsensical, but the more I think about the more I can kind of understand her. A gumiho in the first place is someone who tricks people and that was just confirmed to her. Better to go back to the humans that hurt you than the beast who hurt you I guess.
So far she's not dead, so I hope eventually she gets to make some sort of amends to him in the end (since he's totally not really dead) though she might end up offing herself early next episode.
Anyway, YW will have to be better than Seo Hwa and look past the ugly beast to see the cute puppy. I'm going to guess she will. The parents kind of set up the story as what you shouldn't do and I hope KC and YW do it right.
Aww, Lord Park! I'm glad Kangchi will have a nice parent. Maybe I shouldn't say that so quickly though....there is a adopted mother lurking around somewhere.

I am totally not on her side. I guess its so much better to go back to the people who framed and killed her family, violently raped her maid and caused her death etc etc?. Human or beast he saved her ass and lied because he loves her. I can understand that she is going through hell but seriously, she was about to kill her baby too?. What sin did he commit?.

I'm not on her side, but I get it now...sort of.
It doesn't really matter how nice he was. He's seen as a monster. He's not on the level of humans. So no matter how much the officials hurt her they are still seen as better choice than him. It's wrong, but it's not that it doesn't make sense. I don't agree with it obviously. Her being so vindictive is something I don't really understand though.

Well, yes basically at least to most people in the drama. The story is obviously portraying what it actually means to be human. The tragic thing is she couldn't see it before it was too late, but she was able to see it and not kill baby Kangchi. YW will have to be better than her.

Maid said that she'll receive few beating but will be ok. I don't see why Seo Hwa would've doubted that. There was NO way for her knowing that head gisaeng would try to trick baddie with the maid. You can clearly see that this didn't even occur to the maid who's probably more familiar with how upper class treats servants than Seo Hwa is. She was totally surprised and shocked when head gisaeng ordered her to take Seo Hwa's place.

Seo Hwa knew very well what happens in a gisaeng house. Thats why she would rather be tied to the tree of shame. I think the maid was trying her best to convince her to leave.

Totally agree with you. I just could not understand her thinking process...for her to go back to the soldiers and to the man that killed her father. I mean she's just spent the past couple months living in the woods. Why not take that and continue to live on her own? When she walked into the enemy's camp, I just could not believe it. And then to help them?? Even after she found at that the evil guy was responsible for her brother's death, and to an extent Dam's death as well. SH then helps lead them to kill WR. I understand that seeing him in his true form was shocking. However, he did not kill your brother and father. The man that you are helping did!!! I guess that lying about their deaths is worse than the actual act. And what about the times that he saved you? What about the months that you just spent with him? Did she feel no conflicting emotions about betraying him? The monk could see how in love WR was, how could she not? He never harmed one hair on her head! I guess that if we saw her inner turmoil about betraying him, that would have helped, but she seemed to have none!
And then when WR is killed, and they are standing face to face, I thought she understood that maybe he was not the monster that she thought he was. The monk even explains what WR was trying to do. Then the next scene is her trying to kill the baby. I just cannot understand her thought process.

I can understand her betraying WR because gumihos are scary, but I cannot understand her going back to the dude who framed her family and wanted to rape her (and then really did rape her loyal maid who had taken her place). It's almost like wasting her loyal maid's sacrifice. Or maybe SH just thinks rape is some guy squeezing your boob instead of something much worse? Wouldn't it have made more sense to just abandon him and run off somewhere else completely different? Or to leave a note somewhere that says "This is how to find the Gumiho". Why put herself in danger of being raped? Lucky for her, the rapey villain didn't feel like raping her anymore.
Despite my allergy for sad stuff, the episode was almost perfect (and the look on WR's face before he died - heartbreaking and just so right!), except for that one thing that just threw me out of the story.
Side note: I've thought Choi Jin Hyuk was adorable since the mediocre Panda and Hedgehog drama, but his WR is just too adorable to handle. My brain feels fried from all The Cute!

I think this was one of the problems in execution of the episode. She shouldn't have gone straight to the soldiers but wander in panic in the woods and soldiers would've located her there.
Other option is that she was SO scared of gumiho - and him claiming her back - that she ran to the only protection she could come up with: the soldiers. But if so, it wasn't leveled out enough.
I do buy the main idea in the show and find love story lovely and tragic, but lacking in several points when you consider how it really was portrayed. I didn't really get why gumiho fell so in love with her nor did I really feel she loved him at all. She did like him and cared for him, yes, but love? Didn't get that vibe.
Also, ending wasn't sufficient. She should've expressed more remorse for betraying Wol Ryong. Up until the end I was waiting for the big epiphany of "OH MY GOD, what have I done?! He loved me and I loved him, he wasn't a monster - I killed him!! NOOOOO!!" But it never came. Saying that the baby is not a monster like his father wasn't one, is simply not enough. More tragedy, dammit!

Yeah, I don't think they had enough time to do it though. The parents probably needed another episode, but it would have made things a lot slower and took another episode to get to Seunggi so I can see why they rushed it. It worked overall even if it could have been better.
I'm pretty sure from BTS pictures baby KC will be in the episode for a bit so it doesn't go right to adult KC, so we might get a scene or two left of her still.

I'm not on her side either. She spent months with him getting to know him - I think she should have been able to see more of the human in him and less of the beast.
I'm not even sure she regretted it after he died, still saying he loved her. Did she even care that he was trying to be human for her?
She just seemed really heartless towards him once he showed him gumiho side....and then to betray him and side with the man who killed her father...ugh! And then to try to kill their baby!! Good lord!! That's so cruel!

Man...the parents' story is so epic and heartbreaking.... I would totally watch their own little version of a drama! They really stole the show. I hope Seungi and Suzy's love-line will be just as much, if not more, compelling.
Does anyone know if the parents will reunite in the end?! I want to bawl my eyes out at the possibility that their love story will just end in this tragic way. I already know that Wol Ryung will come back as a 1000 year old devil and fight against Kang-Chi later on. But is Seo-Hwa still alive? I don't know what happened to her at the end of this episode. It'd be great if she's alive and can maybe cure Wol Ryung of the curse 20 years later by confirming her love for him. :'(

Although this episode wasn't that bad (not as great as the first one though) I'm really upset by how they handled Seo Hwa; which basically means that they turned her into a biopolar maniac. Yes, I can understand her fear of her monster child/husband, etc. But does that merit going back to a rapist/killer/douchebag of a guy? I hope not, but she does it anyway! It's clear as day that the gumiho loves her, and Seo Hwa still manages to doubt him when she finds out truth about her brother and sister/maid. The gumiho said himself that he'd do anything to ease Seo Hwa's pain--of course he would lie about the death of her family. What person would want to tell you that your family is dead with a straight face? I don't know, a rapist, douchebag (haven't we seen one of those around here?) Really though, I wish she really got her priorities straight. Oppaho (Joanne's term) made Seo Hwa his world, and he had to pay for it. Sad.
Ugh, frustration. I should probably ignore all the logical nonsense and just take in the fantasy for what it is.
That said, I still love the parents pairing to bits and pieces. Sure their characters have problems (everyone does in this drama) but there's something utterly heart-wrenching about this story that makes me stick around. I may not be 100% (more like 60%) into this drama mentally, but emotionally, for reason beyond my control and understanding, it has taken me hook-line-and-sinker.

Lying has its consequences, proven in this episode. While I agree, that it was rather unbelievable that she asked the same bastard who killed her family for help, I think it's natural for her to fear him upon seeing what he's capable of. Humans are very fickle indeed, even back then. Sad but true :/

I was pretty frustrated, too. I guess while I was watching I made up a Reasons Why Your Relationship Failed (to both of them):
1.) you lied to her
2.) you decided to go pick herbs out in the open in spite of being a hunted slave
3.) you let her
4.) you didn't relocate to China
5.) you didn't wait to start the 100 day gu book process until you relocated to China
6.) if you couldn't relocate to China because of magical spirit junk, you didn't fake her death so they would stop looking and you could live in some form of peace.
While the emotions resonated and the conflicts felt real, a lot of the decisions made by the protagonists seemed like they had either been dropped on their heads as infants or they were total plot contrivances. I dunno, I'm ready for the next story.

The intro narration should have been amended to ..." This is where the sad story of WR begins..."
Episode 2 has turned SH into a weak, single dimensional, shallow and dump flower vase, a murderer of her husband, and almost a murderer to to her child.
Someone please jap her brain with some grey matter and her heart with some consciene.
She appeared to have spared no time in thinking things through, after fleaing from WR out of fear. She could have gone into hiding somewhere else, and weigh things out based on her recent encounter before deciding what to do next.
It makes no sense for her to walk right back into the camp of the one who slayed her father, hanged her brother and raped her maid? What is she trying to achieve? Living up to her fate?
Given the fact that at that point in time, she still believed that her brother and maid were safe, would she not have considered that her surrender would have put them in harm's way, if they try to save her?
If she had thought of killing herself earlier, than it will be more logical for her to consider ending her live, not that I agree with the idea, after the reveal. If shelf preservation is more important that her self/family dignity, then why bother to resist becoming a geisha initially? She could have spared the life of her brother and her maid by her conceding earlier.
And how could the many gesture of love from WR be so readily cancelled by one perceived lie? And how does the anger of being lied to by your loved one immediately translates into leading her arch enemy to capture her saviour, be it a beast in human form?
The even more damning fact is that she tried to kill her own child. Talk about maternal instinct. With such bad genes from the mother, how can Kangchi not turned into a psychopath? Sorry scriptwritter, you are writing for a modern audience. I balme it on your bad writing of this character. May justice be done on SH. I have no sympathy for her by the way you write her.

Agreed. If this was just a whirlwind romance of a few days, the betrayal might have been a bit more realistic. But WR was smitten for three whole freaking months! How could Seo Hwa completely forget that in a matter of minutes? We have to suspend so much disbelief for this show.

It is a heartbreaking episode. And Wol Ryung's face when he realizes that it was his beloved who betrayed him is painful to see. But to see the man you love turn full on beast and EAT people as he kills them must have been just a tad disturbing. And Seo Hwa does realize that Wol Ryung was not evil or a monster. It is too late to save her husband, but it does save their child.
Honestly, this short love story has set the bar very high for the main OTP. Seung Gi and Suzy better bring it. Otherwise I'm going to keep wishing for my Wol Ryung/Seo Hwa pairing.

Lee Yeon-hee had a couple of shaky patches here, but overall Mommy and DaddyHo's story is quite a high bar to live up to for the kids now, and I think I will probably have Second Lead Couple Syndrome along with you if the kids fail to make it.

Oh man, what a show. This was such a good prelude to the rest of the story. I knew Wol-ryung and Seo-hwa would have a tragic ending, but I still hoped for a happy one. But no. Did Seo-hwa die? What happened to her? For now, unless the show says otherwise, I'm gonna assume she died, and is with Wol-ryung in death. So sad.
Now we get to move on to the second generation, with Choi Kang-chi. I hope he doesn't make the same mistakes his father does on his journey to become human. But it would be really interesting to see. He's already half-way there, but he is half-gumiho, and he'll have his own monster-side to deal with. I just love those types of conflicts, where the hero must struggle with his own inner demons, literally.
Love this show already. Thanks for the recap, GF!

Thank you, writer, for botching Seo Hwa's character and turning her into an illogical woman. Sure, you can run away from the monster since that's totally understandable, but why would you go back to the people who wants to get you tortured and raped? I was sitting there thinking, "Really? Can't you find other people in Korea who won't terrify you and torture you and make you into a gisaeng? I mean, REALLY?" It just felt so freaking forced for the sake of drama. Would've been better if she got capture as she was running away from both parties instead of going to her original enemies, plus threatening to kill her (and she then thinks of her unborn baby) than have her full of remorse and shit to the man who saved her twice and even gave her peaches. Just total lack of logic from the writer of Kim Tak Gu/Man of Honor.

Plus, she would get caught either way since she is wanted.
The bastard that killed her brother and almost raped her isn't the only police/chief there, has the other that maybe was who she was trying to find.
After finding out about Maid and her brother death's and knowing the gumiho probaly tricked her, she didn't want to live anymore, so she told the evil guy were he was and I think she also expected to die but didn't...

Wut? Isn't the point of running away is to survive? Why would she then suddenly seek the same people who got her to become a gisaeng, her father killed, and her brother tortured? Plus, her brother is supposed to hide from them. Going into the soldiers camp doesn't mean she'll get to see her brother.
Wrong. She thought her brother was doing fine, and obviously that would mean he wasn't captured. To say she knows she'd be caught either way is just wrong.
As if the other dude isn't working for the bastard. If she truly wanted to meet only him, she would've sneaked into his tent instead of parading herself in front of dozens of soldiers who could potentially report her.
She didn't want to live therefore she led the team of soldiers to her love den? Lulz. If she truly didn't want to live. she could've banged her head on a rock or jumped off a cliff. "Yeah I don't wanna live anymore, so come with me to my love den and THEN kill me." lulz.

I thought Seo-Hwa wandered into the soldier's camp by accident. She was confused and got lost. At least that's my take.
Here's the fact: this was nothing more than a marital fight that got out of hand. Had she found out about the death of her brother and maid without the pressure of the soldiers, she would have sulked, cried and shouted but they would--eventually--make up.
But add the soldiers, the hormones, and the revelations and you can see where things went wrong. She was confused, angry, sad and disappointed. She vented her frustrations on Wol-Ryung, with deadly consequences. There's also displacement: she couldn't attack the real object of her hatred, Jo Gwan-woong, so she's attacking a much easier target.
And don't forget that she couldn't be a day older than 18.
But yes, I wanted to slap some sense into her too. Faith and trust are not what they used to be. He saved her life, the least she could do was not lead the soldiers straight to him.
Remember, we--as the audience--always know more than the actual players.

Totally agree with you.
Sometimes, I also think that we the viewers, esp the female ones, get carried away and swayed by good looks, charms and romance - which Wol Ryung delivered. So we become quick to judge the girl who rejected him.
I think it was a romance doomed to fail from the beginning becos of the way it started. Both parties were immature and were swayed by infatuation. Neither Wol Ryung nor Seo Hwa had any experience of being in love and were attracted to each other by the circumstances that had brought them together. For WR, it was his first love, and despite having lived 1000 yrs, he had absolutely no idea of how treacherous and painful human love can be. How can he, when he lives alone with barely any interaction with humans. He was swayed entirely by a pretty face and a damsel in distress.
For SH, it was her first love too, and she was probably overwhelmed by the romantic gestures and the young and handsome rescuer. Who wouldn't, unless you have a heart made of stone. She was probably swept away by emotions - she was very vulnerable - her whole life fell within a day -her father accused of treason, then murdered right before her eyes, then sold as a slave to be a gisaeng. Stripped, humiliated and tied to a tree, without food and water for three days, mocked and stoned at and then finally having to agree to be a gisaeng after seeing her brother beaten. Only to find out that her first 'customer' was the very man who had betrayed and killed her father. Then while running away, and hunted like a criminal, she was rescued by a very good-looking man, brought to a 'magical' cave - she was a classic case of a person falling in love with her rescuer. She chose to ignore the twinkly lights and the other oddities becos she felt safe and there was someone caring for her and protecting her.
It was a fairytale love for both of them, but it did not end happily ever after. They were both immature and inexperienced and living practicallyn metaphorically in a fantasy. Moonlight Garden???
I hope that KC and YW's love would be a more mature one.

Hello Florentine Lily and Crazyahummafan,
To WR and SH being immature and inexperienced, I would add that they were both naive. I also think that WR assumed a lot of things. It was interesting to see how persistent he was in his courting her, with the flowers, the butterflies and especially him asking her three times to marry him. I personally felt that we/I saw WR fall in love with SH (the whole process), however I did not see SH fall in love with WR, not as intensely as he did. One could argue that it probably wasn't that important, since in those days, marrying someone you love might not have been common, considering the many arranged marriages.
WR assumed that marrying SH would solve everything, since she would be with him (at all times?), under his care and protection. He assumed (and probably hoped) that she would never find out about his beastly side, thus rendering moot her being afraid of him. I don't know if he fully thought about the fact that he would lose his supernatural powers when he became human, and maybe he thought that if he did, it wouldn't matter because SH and him would still be living in the MLG, where humans couldn't go/didn't know how to reach.
I see SH as someone who could be 19, even early 20s, who has lived a very sheltered and protected life. So she is naive about the world around her. She assumed all that WR told her was true, and yes, it did not occur to her to question who he was, why he lived there, etc... Maybe she was so happy and relieved to be safe that she just avoided thinking about certain things. We could also argue that at the time, she didn't need to/had no reason to question what he told her, well, because life was good.
I think that this was more than a marital fight that got out of hand. Yes, SH saw WR transform in front of her and kill people, and she was scared, confused, and hurt. Add to that as Florentine Lily has said, her hormones, the revelations and we have the reactions we saw her have. I would add that when she went to the police camp, she was also brainwashed and taunted by JGW, who said first that she gave up her brother's life and her maid's life to live with a gumiho. She is shocked then. JGW then tries to make her feel guilty by telling her that he tied the noose himself on her brother's neck and that if she had let him have her, her brother would have lived, though I am questioning that now. JGW then orders DPJ to make SH lead them to WR.
As we have seen, SH was not very inquisitive and very smart to start with. I think that by now, she must have felt overwhelmed by what she was told, and since she was ordered to lead them to WR, she didn't have the time to process things properly and think about how good WR had been to her. She also didn't know that he was trying to become human for her. She didn't realize/understand the depth of his love for her until much later. By the time she sees WR again, she hates him, her look to me was that of hate. I think she felt deeply hurt, and hurt is very often masked by anger outwardly. She was not open to anything WR had to say by that time. When she asked WR why he lied to her, and WR told her that he could not bear to see her sad, JGW came out and offered a different explanation: that WR had tricked her to appease her so he could steal her heart.
At first, when I saw that line in the teaser, I thought JGW meant that WR wanted to steal her heart metaphorically (have her fall in love with him). It is only now that I realize that JGW could have meant that WR wanted to literally have her heart, which as many pointed out, makes no sense, because he could have done that a lot sooner AND he didn't need to marry her for that.

I am going to add another response. I had to restart my computer, which was very slow and I didn't finish my thoughts.
So SH is immature, inexperienced about many things in life and naive. I chose to see her as a 19 or early 20s character, because I felt better having someone of such age sleep with a 1000 year old being, though we are told that he does not age (and he indeed looked dashing and endearing and young). We all know that when we are young, we don't always make good judgment calls, and that is certainly true of SH in this episode. Some of the mistakes we make in our youth, we only understand later in life, and we also often appreciate the good things we had once they are gone (unfortunately).
I think that the writer wanted SH and WR's story to be tragic, and she managed to do that, despite some of the holes in logic and in how the story was written and told. Those who have been angry at SH for "killing" WR, forget that she was ordered to lead the police to WR. With her being overwhelmed and feeling vulnerable and hurt at the time, I wonder if she could/would have done things differently. Let's remember that WR in the 1st episode keeps calling her "the child," which to me is also an indication of her mental age and ability to think rationally when she is under pressure.
In being tragic (SH and WR's story), we (the viewers) would hopefully want to root for KC, who might go through the same experience that his father went through romantically (to what extent, we will find out as we watch the show). We would be watching intently, to see if YW handles the knowledge of KC's 1/2 gumiho's heritage differently AND to see if they will have a HEA, though we suspect they will, since we already know that they are the OTP.
The writer probably wanted the beginning of this drama to not only be tragic, but also epic, so we the viewers would be sucked into the story right away and feel attached to KC. They managed to do that, imho with the way the director deftly directed (for lack of a better word) the 1st two ep. The acting was also very good (from all involved), and it added to that epic feel I personally got from watching the show so far. I also personally love the OST, including the English song, which again adds to the epic feel of this drama.
The story also feels tragic (I think) because we the viewers do know and saw what could have been, however because of the misunderstandings and the obstacles and the way their love started, as some have stated, the love of the parents was doomed from the start. And that, I think, was also very intentional on the writer's part. I also noticed that there are details that commenters do not include in their comments, such as the fact that WR did not transform into a beast right away. He begged for DPJ to let them go AND it was obvious that he didn't want to fight. WR mostly became angry when SH cried out to him (yes, she did) and he could not stand to see her suffer, be mistreated and he knew the kind of fate that awaited her, since SJ the monk had told him that they were looking for her and she herself had told him that she was a runaway(sp?) slave. He only became violent when he was attacked and because he wanted to save her. Considering the amount of soldiers there and the order to kill both (WR and SH, or at least capture her), I wonder what else he could have done, honestly. And when WR was done, he had a look of sadness and regret (to me) in his eyes. I think he wished it had not come to that. You can see it here: http://joonni.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/vlcsnap-2013-04-10-02h37m30s135.jpg
Also, after the killings, WR roared in anger and sadness for a few minutes.
I rewatched the scenes from the end of the killing/fight to DPJ sending SH hairpin back th JGW. I think WR was going to try and stab SH, to save himself. Why he called her name before jumping, I don't know and that puzzled me, because it looked like he was warning her. After WR received the final blow that sent him into the air, SH called his name one last time and she looked as if it was sinking in that he had been telling the truth all along and that he did indeed love her. However why he hurt her arm, I didn't understand that. And when SJ came and explained the sacrifices WR had been willing to make for SH, she looked like she believed him (the monk), but it was too late.
Having written all that I wrote so far on this recap, I see both sides and why they did what they did. It was flawed, and yet, that was what made the story tragic (at the risk of repeating myself).
I started to watch this drama because I wanted to see LSG in a different role (I discovered him as an actor in TK2Hs), and because I was intrigued about the plot. I have to admit that the drama captured my attention right off the bat and that CJH and LYH (but especially CJH) impressed me tremendously with their acting in the 1st two ep. and I am glad about that.

That's one thing I wish the writer didn't do. The love triangle (or square... whatever it is) is going to be complicated enough without adding YW's dad being a big part of the reason gumiho daddy ended up like he did. Does KC really have to fall in love with the daughter of the guy who "murdered" his father? Geez...

I was wondering if Sheriff Dam was part Gu...way back in his ancestry. Or maybe he's just like our hero the magistrate in Arang...a mere human with some additional powers. But Satto got his powers because he had died before. How did Sheriff Dam get his powers?
And i so wish Sheriff Dam and Dam didn't have the same name. At least it sounds like the same name to my English ears and English sub-reading eyes. It makes my mind go into all kinds of possible avenues...which will probably be all wrong.

I worry for the Man of Honor writer, Seo Hwa's betrayal could have been handled better. Like being captured instead of willingly walking into the enemy's camp. And not being a mother that hates her child so much to have been attempting to kill it throughout her pregnancy. Let's hope the main story is better.
I take back my prediction of Jang Ok Jung winning the ratings battle. Seems like the revisionist theme is turning viewers off.

Well, modern viewers like us now have a very romanticized vision of gumiho thanks to the recent dramas painting gumihos in a nice positive light but waaay back in those saguek days people have believed them to be very very evil for the longest time. Evil spirits out to lure unsuspecting humans to eat them etc...
For Seo Hwa who has gone through so much in such a short time, we can understand what she is going through, if we imagine how things look like to her:
A gumiho 'saves' her, lies to her to keep her by his side, and wants her to have his monster babies.. hahaha
Perhaps the tragedy could have been avoided if:
they had been married for say longer than 3 months, maybe their whirlwind relationship would have been stronger.
If their relationship wasn't based on lies, perhaps she could have understood and waited with him to become human.
Seriously, 3 months is such a short time for trial to become human. In other Chinese period dramas this is when people retire into caves and just stew inside until the time is up and they open the cave with colored smoke to reveal the new upgraded product hahaha

I do understand her fear. But her direction of hatred towards him, and lack thereof towards her greatest enemy (murderer and rapist) seems really jarring. The fiend was even honest in saying he killed her brother, but the lying savior seems to get the blunt of the blame. That lacks coherence. And her continued hate for the growing baby in her, is off putting.

Going back to the rapist part really threw me off my logic equilibrium. Even if she did make the misjudgment of going back to him, I thought finding out that he is even more dastardly with the news about him hanging her brother would have given her some pause about completely taking Team Rapist's side. And at least an hour or two has passed since finding that out and since the confrontation with WR.
I get the growing hate for her baby - she doesn't think of the baby as hers, but as some demon spawn that WR planted in there - that she was tricked into letting him plant the demon seed inside of her and that if she had known he was a gumiho, she would not have willingly slept with him. When she looked at the baby, she probably saw a mix of her and WR and realized that the baby was conceived out of their love and that WR loved her and that she loved WR (though not enough, sadly...).

Sometimes, when we the viewers read or look at book/drama, we ask ourselves, "how can the character do this or that?"
I too was perplexed at SH going back to the camp where GW was. Running away from WR, I can understand better - he was suddenly transformed into this scary beast before her eyes. The gentle and sweet lover was gone, and in its place was a beast that ripped ppl's hearts out and killed them with his claws. Don't forget, she gave her body to him. If this had ever happened to me, I know I would freak out totally! There's a differences in giving your body & love to man whom you think is good and then find that he's a baddie, to giving yourself to a person you think is human, and then find out that he's not human afterall. Totally creepy, no matter how good they were to you! Moreover, remember that at this point of time, gumihos did not have good track records - they were feared creatures. So she must have felt betrayed. Not only that, she had probably thought that he had lured her or worked some magic into her, so that she would love him and give her body to him, so that perhaps he could have her liver later. Remember that at this time, people were very superstitious and did not grow up on a diet of Twilight.
So her fear was rational in this sense.
As for running back to the person who did all those horrible things to her - I think that it in SH's confused and traumatised mind, 'a known devil is better than an unknown one'. No matter how wicked GW is and no matter what trouble she'll get into by going back, in her distraught mind, she probably thought that at least he was 'human', and in some ways less scary cos, 'humans I can deal with - supernatural gumihos - no'. At this point, any good thing that WR did for her must have seem to have an ulterior, sinister motive because he is a gumiho - ppl lived on a greater fear of gumihos and ghosts and what was unknown back then. We the viewers of course, see things differently. But I wonder if we will react differently if we were in the same shoes.
As for leading them back to his lair, remember that SH was brought up with a lot prejudices, eg her contempt for gisaengs. This is another prejudice. In her mind, when he lied to her about her bro and maid, it was probably with the intent of tricking her and therefore he needs to be exterminated.
I'm not trying to say that I support her actions, but just trying to give a different viewpoint. Isn't that what this thread is for too?

The tragedy could've been avoided if she didn't take sides. Gee, I didn't know that escaping from the gumiho monster exclusively means going into the camp reigned by the traitor who killed your family and tried to rape you. I mean, really? If she still had the mental capacity to activate her inner GPS and find the soldier camp, might as well used that to go and find other people and hide from both of them.
It's just so freaking nonsensical. No matter how scared you are, or how bitter you are about a lie, would you go to the person who did worse things to you? REALLY, Writer? Really?

I want redemption for her, too. But at the same time, could she not see Wol-ryung for what he is? A kind soul. Like the monk. Then again, I like seeing a doomed love play out in such a fine manner. THIS.
That was the only thing that irked me most about her character. Not the fact that she "walked" right back into the rapist's arms. Because that wouldn't have even happened in the first place if her love for wol ryung was stronger. Sure, he betrayed her trust. Sure, she was scared. I would actually dare to ask for a drama heroine to do more rationale thinking...
But in that case, she should've remembered their times together. He took her and rescued her at her lowest. Provided a warm and safe shelter.
Yes, her world comes crashing down after seeing his mass killing. But she should know wol ryung acted out of control because he was only trying to save her. And he lied to her about dam & her brother's death to keep her from pain(not excusing his behavior) but you can rationalize that he did all this to protect someone he loved. Seo Hwa would only become a stronger (albeit not a k-drama) character if she realized all this and didn't act rationally by going to the enemy.

Their love wasn't particularly strong in the first place. Emotional and compelling yes, but it had no foundation and was built on lies and her need to be saved. He was sincere in his feelings, but even he didn't have much reason to love her like he did. She loved his kindness, but when she thought she was being tricked it all went away. I can see how/why it ended so badly.

Of course Seo Hwa "STILL stayed" after learning about the death of her maid and brother. Do you think she was given a choice? This is a character who couldn't escape from a single rope tying her to a tree, do you really think she would have been able to sneak out a military encampment? I guess she could have tried to kill herself again, is that what you mean by "avoid them"? Otherwise, that makes zero sense.
Beyond that, it's blatantly obvious that Seo Hwa felt betrayed herself. Wol Ryung hid his true form from her and lied that her family was alive. Yeah, the audience knows he's "good." But Seo Hwa just saw a dozen people get murdered by a monster she didn't realize that was was married to – her "derision" makes plenty of sense.
This is a story about two lovers who betray each other unintentionally in different ways – that's what makes this a tragedy, as the narrator helpfully notes. The idea that Seo Hwa is somehow the one to blame for everything is just silly.

I'm not saying I can't understand her horror when I consider the situation objectively but she's just badly written. Her every breath is a contradiction and the end result is that she betrays someone who'd never done her any harm and had, in fact, displayed tremendous courage and love for her. By turning to the man who murdered her father and sold her off to a gibang so that he could get in her pants, and then murdered her brother for daring to attempt to protect her. If she's all that upset, just jump off a cliff. Why return to the people you ran FROM, and then LEAD them to the person who saved your life in the first place? He was so dangerous that he had to be killed? I'm sorry, I missed the part of the show where the villagers talked about the random murders in the woods that had been happening for years.
And then this: to risk the lives of the brother and maid you claim to love because you just can't bear to be a gisaeng? What makes your hooha worth more than the maid's life? It's ok to leave her behind to get raped as long YOU stay lily white? Nope. Especially when, FOUR DAYS LATER, you agree to marry some strange hottie you met in the woods.
Keeping the truth about her family from her is EASILY understood. Finding out about the whole monster side of things would be harder to get through. When he bit the guy's neck I thought 'dude, that might be hard to bounce back from'.

@JoAnne
You say that you're considering the situation objectively, but it really seems like you're making Seo Hwa out to be a character she's not.
Jung Yoon is the one that asks the maid to swap places, not Seo Hwa. Not sure why you're making it seem like she forced her maid to do it. And the siblings' goal in escaping wasn't just to protect her "hoo ha," they wanted to prove their father's innocence. Not likely an achievable goal, but what do you expect from a pair of traumatized orphans?
These problems that you seem to have with Seo Hwa's character are plot points that are central to the premise of the story. No, she can't just grit her teeth and sleep with her father's killer so her maid doesn't have to suffer. No, she can't instantly accept that a gumiho can be a good creature.
The idea that the second generation avoids making the same tragic mistakes as the first is the underlying theme of the entire show. If Seo Hwa's character was as selfless and accepting and understanding and you want her to be, they'd have their happily ever after and there would be no need for 22 more episodes.

Reading and thinking these past few days while waiting
for the next episodes, isn't it possible that Seo Hwa was
looking for her little brother and slave girl that's why
she was wandering at the bad guy's camp, after her lover turned into a monster and thinking the only family she had is still living? And isn't it possible that Seo Hwa was forced to tell where the monster was hiding since she was seen at the forest first, and she has no choice but to lead them there? After all, she has nothing to lose anymore, until she found out she was pregnant which ticks her off into killing the child which she thought would be a monster.

We are talking about a gumiho in a fusion FANTASY sageuk, a protector of the forrest who looked like a human being when he is not pissed off. This is not a documentary on the history channel.

This gets at what I thought. It seemed to me that in the world this writer created, the activities of this guardian spirit had evolved into the myth of the gumiho (as popularly understood).
This perception left me wanting them to go back and tell the story of how this guardian spirit came to be known as a gumiho. What were the stories around which the myth evolved? What were the precedents for the monk's repeated warning not to get involved with human affairs (with real stories of interaction, not just the cliche 'it's wrong to change people's fate')? How did the evolving myth contribute to the character's loneliness and isolation? Etc.

It doesn't matter what extraneous genre tags you want to attach to it. Just read girlfriday's definition: "The Korean gumiho, on the other hand, is almost always a malignant figure, a carnivore who feasts on human flesh."
This is the established gumiho trope, and every character's behavior in this show so far has been consistent with that perception. They can't completely redefine the gumiho to be a forest fairy, "fusion FANTASY sageuk," or not.The writers of this show know this, as do Korean audiences. International fans may or may not have this knowledge, something which is clearly evident in so many of the reactions posted here.

The part that honestly confuses me could perhaps be a translation issue. He is repeatedly referred to as a divine creature, as opposed to, say, a supernatural creature. So if he is a sacred, god-like being, how dare they kill him, actually?
by 'how dare they' I'm actually ASKING how they manage to be daring enough to do it, not judging them for doing it.

April 10, 2013 at 6:35 PM
@Joanne
That's what I was thinking too. The villagers called him a gumiho (with all the typically associated characteristics). But the monk identified him as a divine guardian spirit, not a gumiho. So unless it's a translation issue, there's potential that his character deviates from the traditional Korean understanding.
I wonder if the writer is internationalizing the lore and creating a fusion gumiho myth. The gumiho story is linked to fairy stories in Europe and the Kitsune story in Japan. The Gu Family Book was written and filmed in a way that contains elements from all of these. Also, from Wikipedia:
"It is unclear at which point in time Koreans began viewing the kumiho as a purely evil creature, since many ancient texts mention benevolent kumiho assisting humans (and even make mentions of wicked humans tricking kind but naïve kumiho)."
If the book of Gu refers to a family registry, then Miho would be his first name. In Japanese the name means beautiful. That certainly describes him, doesn't it? ;-)

The villagers believe that WR is a gumiho. Only the monk refers him as a divine creature. WR could be both. A gumiho could actually be divine but clearly the people there do not know about that. They think he's a gumiho who lures and tricks human and eat human's liver.

1. actually, seo-hwa fainted after seeing him kill those men, and he took her back to the cave first. when she awoke, she made her way to the camp where the soldiers were. i think i pretty much cursed at her—WHY would you go THERE? yes wol-ryung deceived you, but had she forgotten completely their happy times together? i really couldn't understand her on this point...
2. so what happened to wol-ryung? is he a demon? will he come back after a thousand years? i want lee seung-gi to find the gu family book and MAYBE there'll be something in there to bring his father back, and reunite his parents? please please! and i wonder, would he have stabbed seo-hwa if he hadn't been stabbed first?
3. i also found it puzzling that the bad guy didn't stay to watch and make sure seo-hwa was killed. he'd ordered it, and he'd ordered the death of her brother. it seems like he'd have stuck around to watch seo-hwa die. didn't seem consistent with his character. and his flashbacks of seo-hwa in happier times—was that an attempt to make him seem more sympathetic? it totally does not forgive his actions against dam (when he thought she was seo-hwa!!).
4. choi jin-hyuk. so. much. cuteness. my heart hurts for both wol-ryung and seo-hwa, and their loss of a happy life together. i want them back together somehow—this can't be the end!! :((

To answer you question number 2, in the epiosde there was a part that showed the wooden sword that WR was suppose to stab her with but he didn't, he kind of threw it on the ground cause the camera went back to the scene where he was standing before and the sword was on the ground. it can mean that he chose to die.

To answer your answer 3, i believe the flashback wasn't to show happier times and in no way was to elicit sympathy. i sure as hell didn't feel any of that. for me, i felt gross. disgusted, and some anger. the flashback revealed that he has been eying seo hwa since a while back, and has been planning the downfall of the family just to get a girl he thought looked cute. Classic monster.

The total monster-ness of the villain is one reason why I'm not 100% thrilled about this show - even in Arang, which had one villain who was an all-round failure at humanity, you had a main bad guy (ok, lady) who was more complex/sympathetic.
And yeah, all I saw in that flashback was a creep whose eyeballs should have been burned at for looking at a friend's young daughter that way, it doesn't make it any less creepy that that scene was shot with the 'I'm in love' soft focus!

because i'm still struggling to get over dam's rape (i found it incredibly tragic and disturbing), that even if jo gwan-woong had been more dimensional, i don't think i could ever sympathize with his character. to me, rape is absolutely unforgivable.
i'm also outraged with the head gisaeng's character (adore the actress though). i get why she sent dam in there, but did it have to be dam? if they were going to send anybody into a dark room where nobody was going to recognize each other, couldn't it have been an actual gisaeng who was more sexually experienced, and possibly wouldn't have been as traumatized, both physically and emotionally?
grrrr.

First of all, this is set in the Joseon era, where slaves are considered as less than mortal beings. Sad but true. They had no value. If they had a good master, good for them. If not, just too bad. It's their lot in life.
Secondly, women in that era were considered inferior too. So a slave girl is even worse off than a slave boy.
With these two premises in mind, Dam's 'punishment' was no big deal.
Why not send another gisaeng in stead of Dam?
1) It was Dam who made the switch.
2) The girl had to be a virgin or else, Gwan-woong would know.

i think music selection can really influence how a viewer might interpret a scene. the music was oddly peaceful in the scene where he had that flashback of seo-hwa. plus if he'd worn a leery look on his face in that flashback it'd have felt properly creepy to me.
due to these factors, i just wasn't sure how that scene was meant to be interpreted—i meant that it was seo-hwa in HER happier days.

I wrote this in another thread, but would like to post it here as well. So those of you who have read it already, pls bear with me.
Like some of you, I was disappointed with Seo Hwa’s decision to leave Wol Ryung and to return to of all people, the person who caused her so much grief in the first place. On one hand, I can understand her horror at seeing WR’s transformation. She thought he was human, but he suddenly changed into this scary beast, with whiteish hair, bloody mouth and claws, killing those around him. Even I was pretty scared. So, in her terror, she fled to her own kind, even if they were the cause of her trouble and grief. On the other hand, Wol Ryung was the one who saved her, protected her and loved her. Couldn’t she see beyond his beastly nature, to what lies beneath?
However, I think this drama wants us to look at what we think it is to be ‘human’. My first reaction was, ‘Why go back to Jo Gwan-woong? He’s more of a beast than WR!” First, he betrayed his friend, then framed him for treason. Not satisfied in just seeing him tried in court and maybe even hung publicly by the state, he wants to take his life by his own hands. However, GW can’t just kill him. So he deliberately taunts him, about bedding his daughter, knowing full well that the father would charge at him in anger, thus giving him the chance to slay him in ‘self-defence’. Then he deliberately and manipulatively sends Seo Hwa to the gisaeng house, so that he can sate his lust ‘legally’ – she’s a gisaeng afterall! The final act was to hang poor Yoon.
Beast! I thought! Worse than beast. Then I realised that I was wrong. A beast acts instinctively, like WR. His ‘beastly’ nature was seen only when he was cornered, when his loved one was forcefully taken away. Animals turn savage often because of a need, be it for proctection, territory or basic survival. What GW did was not beastly. It was human. Only humans betray one another, only humans frame each other, only humans manipulate one another and scheme to get their way. Beasts do not have the ability to do all this, only humans. And this is scary! This is perhaps what the drama wants us to think about. In giving up his deity-status and a sedate existence, for love, there are also other consequences - such as betrayal, distrust and pain.
Having written all this, I do hope that when Kang Chi turns ‘beastly’ (now that I’ve seen the father being beastly, I know he will too), that Yeo Wool will be made of more steely stuff than Seo Hwa.
He will probably walk the same path as daddy-ho, but hopefully with a wiser, braver and more loyal love by his side.

I wish that people would not react so fast sometimes to a scene or action and then post all kinds of disparaging comments. This is not fair to the writers or the drama. Just because a scene didn't go the way you wanted it too, doesn't necessarily mean that its bad - just different. And ONE wrong move, does not not mean that the whole show is condemned>

From crazyajummafan to ilikemangos.
Remind me why I am on the point of almost 'hating' human.
Even from history people hate or has prejudice over other people (or any other living being, if I may say so) those are/were 'different' from them.
Most of you tried to point out the other perspective and not to rush on the judgement to Seo-Wha. It just shows that the writer and actress are so good in depicting or chose the basic for whole-drama.
Remind me again.... why we love human?
(I still can't answer that one... and wonder, if I were a Gumiho or Vampire, never would I trade my speciality just to become human - kekeke....)

a wonderfully thoughtful analysis. you are right—what separates humans and beasts is humans' ability for complex reasoning. jo gwan-woong acted like a human, in that his actions against seo-hwa's family were very well mapped out. but what he did to dam, i think that was pure beast.
i personally cursed seo-hwa for returning to the people who created her misery. i didn't understand her, but i think after your reading your comment i can sort of begin to understand why she might have done what she did. WE know how much wol-ryung loved her, WE knew his good intentions, but seo-hwa probably only felt another betrayal. and she's been through a lot in a short space of time. still... still... you just wish so fervently that she had reacted differently.

Interesting post and I see what you're saying. But it's not true to say this is only human. Animals can be mean spirited too. I've owned and raised enough of them to know that they can exhibit unnecessary competitiveness, greed, bullying, and I've seen some animal species routinely exhibit discriminatory behavior. They can be calculating too. They'll show discipline and proper behavior when you're around, but revert wrong behavior when they think your'e not around. It's not anthropomorphizing to say that individual animals have 'character flaws' that are atypical to the instincts and characteristics of their breed.
Humans can be unthinkingly beastly. But I see it as either a function of ignorance, thoughtlessness, or sometimes even reckless nobility (right motives, wrong methods.)
So I guess I'd categorize human behavior differently. Not as being sub-beastly; but as a spectrum that ranges from goodness through various shades of depravity. In this spectrum, depravity ranges from unenlightened beastliness to outright calculated evil.

I do remember something along the promo, something like: what make you human? Probably, maybe before we know, we're more 'animal' than what we thought?
'beast' title nevertheless scare us, eventhough it doesn't harm you in fact. Because we, human, are entrapped in the bound of term of 'nature' when it comes to something we don't know well enough. We rely on "people says", think that's the reality and generalize that as 'true nature' of something that we don't really know what. At the end We come back to the one we think same like us, the one who we thought we've known well enough. Human (?)

Hello, fellow Heartie. Thank you for such a thought-out analysis. Yes, to be two-faced is to be human. I've found that when watching a drama I cannot stand by objectively. I'm in each character's mind, trying to understand his or her motives and actions. I always found the show more entertaining and engaging this way. It's always the shows that make you think and get emotionally involved that is worth watching. This is turning into that kind of show.

This girl, Seo Hwa, has never been quick on the uptake. In ep 1, all her attempts to cling to her dignity and to escape have been naive and pathetic. In the story, she must be around 16, 17, very protected as a yabang missy who hardly ever ventured out of her home. What would she know? No TV, No internet! Oppa Ho just loved her cos she was pretty n pure, not becos of her superior intellect.
On a diff note, I'm liking Lee Sung Jae's acting as the baddie. If you've seen him in Rascal Son's playing a shy, gentle, timid person, you'd hardly recognize it's the same guy. That's what good acting should be like. Compared to say Han Ji Hye, who is fine in any one of her dramas, but remains quite similar fr drama to drama. But I'd be a lot happier if they tell us why the bad guy is so hell bent on destroying her whole family. As it is, his evil is meaningless.

Another nitpick, is when Wol Ryung was lying to her about her dongseng, he’s saying they were fine yet his face was so freaking depressed. Would’ve been more believable that he was lying if he was actually smiling or something. How would you believe the person telling the good news when his face gives away the freaking lie? Really? Lol! Very few birth scenes are depicted with even a degree of accuracy. And I've grown used to shows using older babies to depict newborn babies (or at least, I have to force myself to accept this reality).
Ivoire
April 13, 2013 at 7:13 AM
Hello Foulou and Peridot,
I did notice as well that the baby was a little big and looked older to be a newborn baby. That being said, one has to wonder if it is that easy to be able to get a newborn baby to be in a movie or in a drama. Anyone who has seen any BTS knows that those filming sites/scenes have between 10/20 to 40 people on the set alone, while filming. Then, one has to take into consideration the many bright lights and mirrors that are also used on the set, the different noises, people moving around, the director shouting "action" with a speaker (maybe), and all the different things that happen on a set that we might not know or think about.
I love to take pictures, however, whenever I have been around newborn babies, their parents usually do not like for the baby's pictures to be taken, especially if taking the picture would involve using a flash. So I have learned that it is not good/recommended to have bright lights on a newborn. Since that is the case, one can just imagine how hard it would be for a newborn to be in that kind of environment (filming on a set). Do you guys know of any parents who would want to subject their newborn to that kind of treatment and that kind of environment? Would you personally like to subject your newborn baby to the kind of environment I have just described?
So yes, very few birth scenes might be depicted with very little degree of accuracy, however, it has to be noted what the director and the production team have to work with. We do not know that newborns are readily available to be shot in movies and dramas. That is a decision the parents have to make (think of how time consuming it would be for the parents to get the baby ready, the time being on set to get the mood right, etc...). I personally think that we don't always get to see in movies and dramas what we would like to see (to have accuracy), because the logistics of getting that done might not work out or might be very challenging. Also, how much would the production team have to pay the parents, and is it worth it for the parents considering all the trouble they will have to go through just for that one or two scenes? How many parents even want to do that?

Let's also not forget that the filming was done outdoors and it was still cold. I recall seeing vapour coming out from WR and SH's mouth in one of the scenes.
Ivoire
April 13, 2013 at 4:44 PM
Hello Crazyajummafan,
And thank you so much for understanding my points and for adding the fact that the weather is still cold during their filming. I also did see some vapor coming out of WR and SH mouths at some point, and that would be another reason NOT to have a newborn on that set. I mean, his immune system is probably not ready for such things (as cold weather) yet, just sayin'...
When watching a drama or a movie, yes, we would like as much accuracy as we could get, depending on the context (I am sure no one actually wanted to see HOW the maid was raped, or at least I hope so), however, we do need to think about the cost (on many levels) of what such an effort/requirement would entail.
crazyajummafan, I read earlier that you have four (beautiful) children :-), and so I think that you could appreciate what I wrote. Who, in their right mind would say, "bring my one week or two weeks old baby on a outdoor set to be filmed and spend the day or half a day there, waiting for everything to be set right? Sure, why not? Never mind that I just gave birth and my body is still very much so healing (and I am not so sure this is how I want to spend my time these days) but sure, why not?"
Sometimes, in a drama or a movie, things are not that accurate (e.g. the snake in episode 1, the newborn baby, etc...). When that happens, I try to think about the costs involved (financially and otherwise) to bring/have "accuracy," and because of that, I am willing to roll with it and pretend it is accurate. Why? Because in the end, that does not diminish my enjoyment of the drama or the movie (in the big scheme of things), and I am personally relieved and glad that no newborn babies had to risk his/her health so I could have some accuracy.
I don't know if you will read this post, crazyajummafan. If you do, I would like to respond to the one you posted earlier about human vs beast and their reactions. If you do see this response and have the time, please read my other response and share your thoughts if you have any. I am a heartie two (TK2Hs is one of my top 5 dramas, currently) and it is a pleasure to see how engaged and thoughtful you are in your analysis of dramas. Yes, I remember you from TK2H days! We really had a wonderful time discussing the drama!
I've read all your comments, and I also feel that even though certain details in a drama cannot be as accurate or realistic as we want them to, it should not spoil our appreciation or enjoyment of the drama.

Yeah, I think the glimpse of his affection for Seo-hwa would have been better to show in the first episode. Seeing that affection darken and twist into obsession would have made for a better villain than the one-dimensional cackler that we got, but it looks like they're trying to go back and make him more complex. We'll see if it works.
