Shin Hyun-joon to tie the knot

Aww to old bachelors finally getting hitched. Shin Hyun-joon (Gaksital, Oohlala Spouses) has announced that he’ll be getting married, and will put a period on his bachelorhood come May 26. His bride is a Korean-American gyopo 12 years his junior (he’s 44, so that makes her 32), which means she’s not a celebrity; she’s a music major and the couple has been dating since last year.

I love that the celeb responses are pretty much echoes of our own (as the collective fandom, I mean): “I thought he’d be alone forever. Congrats congrats!” (Im Hyung-joon). “Hallelujah~ I’m so glad. Congratulations, truly. Welcome to the married life” (Kim Won-hee). Haha. Why is it that once a guy hits late thirties, he practically has the whole country on a mission to marry him off?

Shin Hyun-joon also tweeted the news himself on the 16th, and is in the thick of wedding preparations. The ceremony will take place at Seoul’s Grand Hyatt Hotel (a popular celeb wedding spot), and you can bet it’ll be attended by a who’s who of the entertainment industry.

I liked him in Entertainment Weekly, he is so funny and has friendly/flirty banter with his co-host. I liked it the most when he was hosting with Lee Si-Young. They had great chemistry together.

Congratulations!!!! Hopefully no more scandals for him, from here on.

Congratulations! I hope it will be not shotgun marriage as per other celebrity. He was my first Korean actor crush. Still remember back then when I root for him and Choi JiWoo in Stairway to Heaven compared to KSW/CJW.

I guess Kwon Sang Woo will be not invited to the wedding. :P

Shin Hyun Joon used to date Son Tae Young. Son Tae Young cheated on him with Joo Young Hoon but ended up marrying Kwon Sang Woo. I'd bet there's still bad blood between him and Son Tae Young.

OMG, the first drama I saw him in was in that one, Stairway to Heaven and as a child I was sickened by the fauxcest and just associated him with "neukki"ness from then and forever. But his recent comedies have convinced me of his talent.

Why is it I feel so relieved every time I hear anyone older get married?

Maybe because the celebrity life is scary in Korea and I am so happy every time any of them make it to the altar.
But he's so senior it will be interesting seeing who'll turn up at the ceremony.

In my opinion, its scary because Korean fans seem to feel possessive ,prying, super critical, as if they have a right to approve or disapprove of every behavior, relationship or mistake of anybody famous. Live and let live is not an option
to the point of paranoia on the celebs part. Public opinion
ruins careers "kills "people.

Not just younger, but a lot younger. Once you get past a certain age, there just aren't very many single people in your age group I guess.

Well, it depends on the culture/country too. In South Korea that's especially true; when you look at the marriage statistics, SK has one of the lowest older woman/younger man percentage of marriages in the OECD (maybe the lowest). There seems to be more of a stigma against a women marrying younger men than you'd find in other countries, and I bet it has quite a lot to do with the strict age hierarchy + patriarchy.

I have a language question. Does gyopo only refer to people born in Korea and living elsewhere? Can it also be a child of Korean parents born and raised outside of Korea?

I would've squealed if "Ohlala Couple" wasn't such a flop. And I had high hopes for it...*le sigh*

If so, "a truth universally acknowledged" would be something along the lines that there are planets in the solar system or that a water molecule has two hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom. Sounds like you meant "it's something that's known by many", not acknowledged.
Yet, I'm not sure what you were referring to (if to my question at all). Did you mean that many know he's had plastic surgery or many know he has pretty eyes?
In any case, if you were addressing me, I found your response odd.

Its the famous opening line from Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'. The line continues: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife." That opening line is referring to the theme of the entire book of the main characters mother trying to arrange good marriages for her daughters.

So, thefunofit was referring to "the truth universally acknowledged.." in relation to what appears to be the country's vested interest in matchmaking older male celebrities.

SHJ is one of the few actors who can do drama and comedy equally well; he's also quite entertaining in variety.

Aside from "Marrying the Mafia" - the "Three Mr. Kims" is a silly but entertaining film.
