Name That Drama: Cheaters, rain, and airports
by javabeans
Time to play another round of Name That Drama!
If you’ve got a drama you’re dying to identify, whether you’ve got lots of details or just a precious few to offer, send them in and we’ll feature them in future posts.
- I could identify the drama Sophie’s looking for, but why spoil the fun for someone else? This one’s a doozy:
This was my very first Kdrama and I watched it with my whole family, including my grandmother, so it has a special meaning to me and I would greatly appreciate it if someone could recognize it. It had over one hundred episodes and I’m pretty sure it was filmed in the 2000s.
- The protagonist was a woman who was forced into marriage by a man. The man later cheats on her with her best friend and then tries to drown the main character when he finds out she’s pregnant with his child. She survives, but loses the baby.
- She lives in poverty, and then meets our leading man who helps her and she is later adopted into his family
- She becomes a successful makeup artist working with her new adoptive mother *One reason she earned the mother’s love/sympathy was because her fake name was the same as the mother’s supposed dead daughter.
- She falls in love with her adoptive brother (the man who helped her).
- Beautiful and rich, she goes back to her ex husband pretending that she is a stranger who happens to have the same face as his supposed “dead” wife. She marries her ex again, wanting to ruin his life.
I don’t remember much about the ending, only that she reveals who she really is to her ex and he’s horrified and completely freaks out.
Some scenes/details that I remember:
- A nurse had taken pictures when the ex had tried to drown the main character. The nurse uses the pictures to blackmail the ex into giving her money.
- The woman gets plastic surgery to put a beauty mark by her eye. This is actually the most memorable scene for me.
- Her new mom made her take horseback riding, painting and dancing, to imitate her dead daughter.
- The first time she let her ex see her again was at a dance competition where he’s in shock at seeing her face.
- Evelia’s drama may be tough since it’s only one scene, but let’s see if it jogs anybody else’s memory:
The drama that has been bugging me for a few years I saw as I was trying to find something good on t.v. Then I saw this scene: it was raining, and a young man and a young girl were fighting. She tells him to let her pass but he keeps blocking her way. So then suddenly he lays on the ground and tells her that the only way that she is going to pass is if she stomps on him. And she stands there as he keeps getting wet.
- Vicky is searching for two dramas that may or may not be Korean, but I bet there’s someone out there who has an idea:
I saw these dramas around 2000-2002. I’ve been looking for them since but I have no idea what the title is or even what country they’re from. My mom watched them in Mandarin and Cantonese but I remember complaining that sometimes the voices seemed like they didn’t match the person speaking.
This one was a Kdrama I think. It had to do with…airports? In the beginning the characters are in the USA. The main guy is talking to somebody and the somebody asks him his views on love or something and he says that he doesn’t believe in love. The main girl is over at the next table by herself trying to flag down a waiter to get a refill before she loses it. She slams her hand down on the table as one walks by and yells, “Excuse me I’ve been trying to get a refill forever! Do you see this cup?? There’s a big chip in the cup! How am I supposed to use it?! It’s gonna cut people’s mouths!” She yells a few more complaints before slamming down a business card (“this is for the meal”) and adding a penny (“and THIS is your tip!”) and he falls for her there or something.
Then around the end of the drama, she runs to stop him from leaving at the airport and meets him at an elevator or something.

Yes, it's definitely Hotelier.
Vicky described that scene very detailed and I remember the restaurant called 200 roses, right? And later the main guy give a bouquet of 200 roses to remind her that he has already saw her on Las vegas.
Great drama.

I wonder if BYJ will ever play a main role again. Have only seen him in a few episodes of things lately. Perhaps he is too busy with his entertainment company and endorsements.

I remember the show. It had a scene of BYJ in the limo chatting casually with his right hand man in "English" as the girl whom he had given a lift to gawked from the opposite seat (the limo had seats facing each other) at the "amazing"volleying of English words from one to the other. What made me laugh out loud was BYJ's painful and excruciating "English" while the other guy spewed fluent English. So awkward....

I believe Temptation of Wife is not a melo, but makjang.
I refuse to put melo and makjang in the same category! :D
And 100++ episode, that would be a big barrel of tea you have to try, not only a cup....

100++ episodes?? As in over 100 hours of viewing? I can stomach both makjangs and melos but not such a long amount of time, especially if it ends up that the ending was not to my liking and then I would throw a tantrum, lol.

LOL i used a lot of ff to marathon dat barrel of tea & swore not to watch any 100+ eps drama again in 6mths...bad for health...but i can't resist to root for a woman who wants to revenge on an asshole husband & i jus love the lead actor (adoptive brother)

I don't really mind makjang in fact I prefer it to melo. I even like A Man Who are Called God (though I haven't finished that one) ^_^
But 100+ is really too much I remember my experience watching Jumong (not really sure about its episodes but I remember it was many) how towards the end not only I lost interest but felt cheated.
100 might worth it depending how it goes and ends.

I watched Hotelier numerous times, a great guilty pleasure! Those were the days: a very handsome BYJ (ie before he went weird) plus gorgeous SYA and Kim Seung Woo. The kiss scene in the elevator remains to date one of the best Kdrama kiss scenes. And KSW walking thru the hotel searching SYA with 'Times to say goodbye' in the background got me into tear every single time. YT used t have an MV of that scene. If anyone knows the link, please let me know?

Also I have one for the group!
So before I started watching K-drama's, I was flipping channels and ran across KBS - this must have been in 2007 or 2008. I only watched for a few minutes but here's what happened.
A middle-aged woman gets hit on by some guy (I can't remember if she knows him already or he was just some dude) and she kind of goes on a date with him and enjoys herself. She then starts feeling guilty when she goes home. The next scene was this younger guy working at a restaurant and he's pining over either a dead or ex-girlfriend. He goes out a bridge and is holding her picture and lets it go saying that he will let her go.
Vague enough for everyone?

for Vicky's drama, it seems to me that it might be Korea's "Hotelier", starring Bae Yong Jun, Song Yun Ah, Kim Seung Woo, and Song Hye Kyo.
If my guess is correct, it might be the scene wherein SYH's character is on vacation and goes out to eat but is shown bad service at the restaurant she chooses for dinner (?), which also is the same restaurant that BYJ's character sees her for the first time ^.^
Hope this helps ~!! ^.^

*****SPOILERRRRRRR *****
I caught the end episode and it was so weird....saw a couple of angels who came to say goodbye - I'm guessing these are the baddies? an older guy and a woman all dressed in white and looking really nice and regretful and I'm thinking, if they are evil, they should have gone to hell and be consumed by the eternal flames of hell, so how come they have time to gallivant about and looking so pretty? And what happened to them anyway? Did they kill each other or commit suicide together?

Can we play a similar game? Recommend that Drama?
I've been looking for dramas to watch and have recently fallen into a rut of "gah. what can I watch now" I've watched Joseon X-files, some God's Quiz, City Hunter, Vampire Prosecutor (I haven't started season 2 yet though), and Gaksital. However, I have forayed out of this type with 49 days, Dream High, and I need Romance 2012 (only because I LOVE all three leads), and some J-doramas like Mop Girl and Rich Man, Poor Woman. What drama do you recommend next? :3

javabeans posted a list of her rom-com recommendations a loooooong time ago:
http://www.dramabeans.com/2009/11/romantic-comedy-drama-recommendations/
Those are rom-coms though. So I guess you're not into that genre? I wish she'd update that list because there have been hundreds of dramas since then. And then maybe she could add other genres. Kkk. I think that's too much to ask though. :)

OK, everyone is awesome. Thanks for the recommendations. I guess I've been more into action/mystery than rom-com, but I'm not 100% against rom-com and foray into it especially if it's a lead I like/plot sounds interesting. I'm interested in fusion sageuks, since I liked Joseon X-files (first K-drama woot!). Also, in the future, I shall brave the crazy (good crazy-- the fun kind) and partake in an OT xD

Hotelier.
It is a drama I really enjoyed.
I always thought Frank was the second guy, so I was wrong all this time?
As for the end, I love it.
I also like all the characters and this is a win...
The plot isn't nothing ''wow amazing'' but it stayed simple and didn't tried to be something it wasn't.
I liked how it was life in a hotel day after day and its problems. Of course I also love Frank and his actions and all!

I actually like this idea of Name That Drama because it depicts highlights of some shows that if they interest me, I can go watch them. Temptation of Wife didn't sound so appealing in its summary on streaming sites but here it sounds like something I might enjoy, lol. Too bad it's over 100 episodes. A bit off topic, but can someone explain to me what makes a drama a melodrama vs a makjang drama?
An internet search yielded this
"what makes a drama makjang? When it comes to dramas, when plot devices involving extreme, absurd, or outrageous instances of life (cases that make you go, hmm, what’s the likelihood of that happening in an average person’s lifetime) are dealt with in an illogical or twisted manner to arouse or hook the viewers"
Since I usually watch rom/coms, my definition of melo is if the writers are mean to their characters such as killing them off or giving them a dread disease. I feel unsafe in meloland because a character I love might be brutally taken for me.
Example: How would you classify "Shut Up Flower Boy Band"? *SPOILER* I really bonded with Lee Min Ki when bam! I was so shocked I cried for a week. So does that make SUFB a melodrama? I did eventually finish that series, but it was full of resentment for killing off a main character I had falled in love with. (It would be akin to Flower Boy Next Door Enrique being killed in ep 5, which thankfully didn't happen so I don't see FBND as a melo).

Hi Everyone,
For Vicky--
The third drama, as many have already mentioned, is "Hotelier." In my opinion, it's an excellent Korean drama. (Maybe, not the most original, but it remains one of my favorites.)
Also, YA Entertainment released a dvd set with English subtitles, which you can still find on eBay. However, it's pricey.
You can watch it for free here:

Evelia's drama is Famous Princesses, a.k.a. The Infamous Chil Sisters! I loved that couple--Park Hae Jin and Lee Tae Ran--she described. They were the main draw for me to watch the drama, but I didn't finish it because school started. I guess I'll finish it someday :)

Just to correct something about Hotelier: 1. KSW was the big star in 2001 and not BYJ and originally he was the leading man. Just because there are so little Dramas when the supporting man gets the girl (funny that happened twice in KSW Dramas), everyone thinks BYJ is the lead even when he has a lot less screentime.
I really love this drama and the couples. KSW character needed a woman he can play hero for and BYJ some badass woman who would kick his ass if it is needed.

This! I knew BJY was the second guy and I was so happy that
*************spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!************
she ended with the second guy Frank in the drama! I was always sad ''Frank is the perfect second guy, of course she won't end up with him...'' but she did and I was so happy, also it was refresing that the main girl ended with second guy. I didn't like main guy at all. He did not deserve her imo.
**************end of spoiler :) ************

I was hoping then that YA would do a sequel of Hotelier, one where Han Tae Jun would finally meet his match... but its a long time ago and he has Kim Nam Joo now - for real. Those were the days
