Kim So-hyun to play young Sung Yuri in Birth Secret

Child actress Kim So-hyun (I Miss You) is really starting to rack up the melodramas on her resumé — next up for her is playing the younger version of Sung Yuri in the weekend drama Birth Secret, the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink melo about a genius heroine with amnesia AND a birth secret. So we’re going for subtle, are we? Kim So-hyun always does a great job of kicking off a drama and gaining the audience’s sympathy right away, but I’m starting to feel bad for the amount of suffering her drama characters have to endure.
At least in this drama she gets to play the brighter version of the heroine, long before the amnesia kicks in. Unsurprisingly, she starts out an optimistic Candy-type character, only she’s also a genius. She also holds the key to the central puzzle/mystery of the story, which isn’t explained further in the plot description. I’m just going to go ahead and guess it’s a birth secret, ’cause whadduya know… the title says so.
As an adult (played by Sung Yuri), she’ll have amnesia and not remember her husband (Yoon Joon-sang) and young daughter, who is also a genius just like Mom. The main story will be her piecing together her own life in the wake of her memory loss, and also coming around to the idea that she’d ever marry a man who seems so wrong for her. The drama calls itself a trendy which just sounds wrong based on all the other descriptors, but perhaps they’ll go with a light and breezy tone? I just don’t see it happening, but I suppose we’ve seen crazier things in dramaland.
The 20-episode series will be helmed by the writer of Cinderella’s Sister and the director of Spring Days. It follows Incarnation of Money and premieres April 27 on SBS.

All genius aside, Kim So Hyun can really pass for a young Sung Yuri. After "Nice Guy" and "That Winter", I guess I shouldn't automatically cross "melo" as a genre off my list. It could be nice to have a female genius (2 in this case) for once!

I think she looks more like a young Son Ye-jin, but she does have the odd ability to look at least in some small way like most of the grown-up actresses playing her characters.

Agreed on that KSH looks more like SYJ.
Also thought she looked more like Han Ga-in, at the time, in TMTETS than Kim Yoo-jung.

As did I. She's only 13. It's not ever necessary, but it's even LESS not necessary here. I wouldn't let my daughter out of the house with her shirt tied that way at that age. Which is not to say she wouldn't have done it as soon as she got away from the house - why not? I mean, I did. - but at least she got the message that you shouldn't be focusing on presenting a sexy image at 13.

Ha, that's exactly what I did too! But a regular kid trying to bend her wardrobe rules =/= a child actor who has been styled and posed this way by the adults controlling the shoot, who think this is a good idea.
Let me put it this way, if I saw a real-life 13-year-old dressed like this, it wouldn't bother me because at least it's their choice. Here though, the context makes it different (and she's not the first child actor to be somewhat inappropriately portrayed at her age, I remember an editorial last year with Kim Yoo-jung that had a few creepily Lolita-ish shots as well).

I thought the same. And as long as we're on the topic, I think it's funny that you see female Korean celebrities wearing hemlines that leave nothing to the imagination but then they use a blanket to cover their legs when they sit for interviews wearing the same dresses.
I say if you can't sit w/ the darn dress without exposing yourself, maybe it should only be worn in the privacy of your own home. Haha

I used to wear shirts like that at 13 (which was before she was even born omg, it was the 90s) but it's the framing and the pose that make me a little uncomfortable.

I've seen cropped versions of this shot before that excludes the bare midriff and I liked the shot...I don't know if it is the tummy or the fact that her hips appear to be slightly cocked that makes me a little uncomfortable with this version but something seems a little skeevy...

Like some, I checked on her age and was surprised it was only 13 where I was expecting 15 (her age in I Miss You). It was odd to see this kind of image as I thought her representatives (and parents) would not want to rush her away from childhood and innocence. She has 20+ years to be provocative...just sayin'.

Is this synopsis not making any sense to anybody else? I've read everything from YJS and SYR meeting up on the verge of suicide to her not remembering her husband and child and then a birth secret? Unless her dissociative disorder has a genetic component and SYR's character needs to find out who her real parents are or whatever, how does a birth secret fit into this story?
So confused. And if she cheats on Yoo Joon Sang's character, even in her amnesiac state.... I am NOT here for that.

This drama kinda sounds like this other drama I saw...I think it was called 18 vs. 29. The heroine is a 29 yr old married woman about to have a divorce and she loses her memory and returns to her years as an 18 yr old and wonders how on earth she ended up marrying the guy she did. This one, however, seems like it has more weirdness going for it....with what the birth secret and all.

It is. It aired in 2005 or so with Ryu Sooyoung and Park Sunyoung as the leads. Siwon of Super Junior, King of Dramas, and Oh My Lady had his drama debut there as he played the younger version of the Ryu Sooyoung's character. :)

Styling aside (stop being a prude pogo, you wore shirts like that at 12-13 too), I'm happy that she's getting more work, and she really is one to watch - the reason I stuck with IMY was because I loved her and Yeo Jin-gu as young Su-yeon and Jung-woo, so much - even more than Yoochun and Yoon Eun-hye, which I did not anticipate.
And she's another one I can't wait to see in a full-length drama, playing her character through all 16 or however many eps - so talented, even if some block-of-wood idol 'actor' her age is likely to make drama lead before she does.

correction: i tried to wear shirts like that at that age, but my parents would not let me b/c it's a bit sexualized and aggressive for someone so young.
here she is in an outfit that she wore for a photoshoot--a photo that her handlers had to know would be published--and her belly is out, which is why a couple of people here, including myself, think it is inappropriate for someone so young.

Let me make it clear, the fact that there are adults okaying this is what makes me uncomfortable - like I said in another comment, there's a major difference between a teen wearing that on her own and a teen given that to wear for a photoshoot and told to pose that way by adults.

The only way this drama can be good, with a synopsis like that, is if it's actually a satire of makjang melos. I would LOVE to see that. It would be so hilarious.

I really liked her bits in Iris. I like her with Park Guntae more than Yeo Jingoo. Ha. They have quite the generation of actors. I'm sure they'll really shine when they get older.

Oh boy.. I aint too sure about this one- what with it being written by the same person who wrote cinderella's sister. Granted.. I shouldn't judge her ability on the one drama I saw by her... But meh.
I like kin so hyun though. She's one of the best child actresses around alongside others like yeo jin gu and Kim yoo jung- ack!
I'm sure she'll do well in the drama but... Nah.

To me this kind of sounds like that NBC show that of course was cancelled in the first season: Awake. Starring Lucius Malfoy. I know amnesia is different than not realizing whether you are awake or asleep, but kind of not. But basically, he could not trust his memories and still had to solve crime in both dream/awake states.
I think if it is done like that, it could be good. I always thought that the format of that show would lend itself well as a Korean drama.
