Kim Nam-gil and Sohn Ye-jin courted for revenge drama

Have we finally got a post-army comeback project in the works for Kim Nam-gil? It’s still in unconfirmed casting stages, but new KBS revenge drama Shark is after both Kim Nam-gil and Sohn Ye-jin to headline. It’s the latest project from the writer-director team behind Fermentation Family, Mawang (Devil), Resurrection, and ’90s series School. Shark will be the final installment of the Resurrection/Devil trilogy.

It’s slated to follow Kim Hye-soo’s rom-com God of the Workplace on Mondays/Tuesdays, but the casting on this one still sounds very iffy — both Kim Nam-gil and Sohn Ye-jin’s reps confirm that it’s a drama they’re looking at, but say that it’s just one of many potential projects. There’s very little info on the drama itself, but if it’s anything like Resurrection or Devil, there will be murder and mayhem, psychological twistiness, and lots of revenge. I wonder if Uhm Tae-woong would’ve just rounded out the trilogy and starred in Shark if he wasn’t playing Yi Sun-shin later this year.

I like the pairing, and it’d be great to see Kim Nam-gil — ahem, complete — a revenge thriller like Bad Guy and not have the story go to the loony bin on him. It’s been years away from dramaland for both of them, so this show would certainly make some waves if it could score the double comeback.

Shark is looking at a late-May or early-June premiere on KBS.

YESSS!!!! Totally behind this one. I loved Mawang, and I loved the gentle redemption arc in Fermentation Family, and I love that they are casting older, experienced actors who actually look like they might possibly have something to be revengey about. Sorry, I just can't get behind those cute baby faces trying to look conflicted.

LOL and I so agree with this sentiment!

Really looking forward to seeing Kim Nam Gil again, although naturally the revenge part makes me wary. And Sohn Ye Jin as well -- I think she's at her best in intense, dramatic roles as opposed to cute, romcom type roles.

As I said on twitter, just seeing the words "Kim Nam-Gil" and "revenge drama" in the same sentence is enough to give me hives after suffering through "Bad Guy's" travesty of an ending. He's a great actor, but talk about bad associations -- think I'll have to wait several eps into the actual drama to read reviews and see if it's safe to give it a try :).

pogo, I won't start up years-old arguments, but IMO, his leaving for the military service was a shoddy excuse they used to justify that God-awful ending. Plenty could have happened to make it better even in his absence.

Faye, I was all set to completely avoid Queen In-hyun's Man because I was scarred by Ji Hyun Woo in The Drama That Must Not Be Named...hated it, hated him in it. But glowing reports from the Beanut Gallery led me to give it a try, and now it is one of my favorite dramas, ever.
So the moral of the story is yes, a good actor can be redeemed from a horrible past with a bad drama.

As a fan of SYJ, I have always wanted to see her act in darker roles since White Night, and also her improvement in every project she acts in. (because her acting disappointed me in The Tower :()

omg. i couldn't recognize him! and I watched (and re-watched) QSD all the way through from the beginning to end. wow, what a difference a mustache makes. I don't know if i like him without it or with. hmmmm

oh and, if he and Son Ye jin are the leads, i might check out the drama out, although i don't watch a lot of revenge dramas....

I'm with Rashell and at this point will watch Kim Nam-gil weave baskets for 16 episodes. I really hope he gets a great drama to come back in and this one has potential. I was recently thinking about good leading ladies for him and Sohn Ye-jin and Shin Mina were at the top of the list. So yes, make this happen and if not, basket weaving is fine too.

Yes, let's make this happen although I will be sad-faced if this means he won't be in 'Swords and Flowers' - looks like it'll be KBS' signature drama of 2013.

As an aside, I'm so glad we're no longer seeing the WTF pairings we were subject to in the past couple of years. Thank god for so many actors returning from the military.

Yeah, apparently the producers were going after him pretty hard to make room in his schedule. Rumored female leads were Lee Min Jung or Goo Hye Sun (I wouldn't put much store by the rumors though) but obviously neither of those 2 are available now.

Although, from other websites I read, it seems that Shark is not likely to get a timeslot at KBS unless Son Ye Jin or someone with similar clout actually does sign on (I'm guessing Kim Nam Gil isn't exactly compelling enough on his own to KBS) because some other drama has already been approved to air after Kim Hye Soo's.

So, for all we know at this point, this project will never materialize and Kim Nam Gil may have time for Swords and Flowers after all.

Yes, KNG is Bidam and his best drama ever. Don't like his role in Bad Guy -wasted his talent.

Goes the same for SYJ's Personal Taste.

Perhaps their previous drama concepts sounded fine but not its actual run. Though I liked the backdrop of cultural heritage house for PT

He did well in the earlier episodes of that show like up to 9, I think, when he would be very silent, and communicate with his gaze much like a child growing up in a deaf household would.

Good news!
I like both actors (yay for grown-up people as the leads!) and I like the projects by the writer/director team. I don' really mind the "revenge" aspect, as long as it doesn't turn out ridiculous, but again the creative team seems reliable in that matter.

Even if I am the only one in the world I must say it: I love KNG with his moustache!

I am all down for this pairing. KNG as Bidam stole my heart forever and SYJ is one of my favourite korean actresses. Watching them two fall in love and angst and revenge it up on screen would make my kdrama 2013.

I always get scared when I hear revenge drama. There is so much upside and sooooo much downside to that genre. They can be absolutely awesome like Mawang, Time Between Dog and Wolf and City Hunter or they can be watchable hot messes like Bad Guy or Equator Man or they can just be downright horrible like A Man Called God or Temptation of an Angel. But seeing as this is from the team that brought us Resurrection and Mawang my hopes are HIGH! If this casting actually pans out, I will be soooooo happy! Please, please, please!

I hope oppa KNG accepts it. It's been soo looooooooooooooooooooong since the last time we've seen him in a drama series. I miss his sly smile. (of course, I miss his great acting skills as well) Oh my gosh! Whatever drama it is, as long as it's going to get him back on the limelight, them I'm all out for him! I miss oppa!! Why such a serious drama again!!!!???????? He has such a cheerful personality yet always comes up with the most tragic and dark character ever. Please my dear dear Kim Nam Gil, please don't die in this drama. After seeing you die in Portrait of a beauty, Queen Seon Deok and Bad GUy, i am in no state to cry over your death all over again. This morning, I thought about Kim Nam Gil and started watching some of my favorite scenes from Nappun Namja. Then I wished I'd see him back in drama-land. 'Cause he so fine. Well, here's to wishing it'll come true! And yes, I like the pairing as well!
