Nine’s melancholy and mysterious teasers
by girlfriday
Ooh, I’m intrigued by the tone of these teasers for the new tvN time traveling drama Nine — they’re moody and dramatic, and steeped in regret. Beautiful regret, mind you, but just enough to make this a darker, more mysterious world than I had anticipated, and I find myself a little more interested than when I thought it would be another (lesser) Inhyun. The new drama from the creative team behind Queen In-hyun’s Man stars Lee Jin-wook as a news anchor who gets nine chances to go back in time. He doesn’t go very far though, and sticks to a twenty-year window. And in the trailer we see why.
The four short teasers collected below each show a different moment in his relationship with the heroine, played by Jo Yoon-hee, and he seems to be going back to specific moments where it all went wrong. The question is what went wrong in the present to make him go back. Is it just that they’re not together? Does she die? Disappear? There seems to be more going on than just a lost love. And his character description says he does go back in time to solve a crime. I thought the two (crime and love) were separate, but maybe they’re the same problem. The four different lines from each teaser:
Then, I… shouldn’t have let go of your hand.
Then, I… should’ve answered your call.
Then, I… shouldn’t have seen that memo.
Then, I… should’ve held your hand.
If I have the chance to go back…
And of course he does — he gets nine magical chances in fact, though I’m already worried about the loopholes and consequences. Because you know those are going to be terrifyingly tragic the more he messes with Fate. The setup makes this a whole lot closer to Operation Proposal than Inhyun in theme, but I like the added mystery behind it and the fact that he’s fighting to correct something more than just a broken heart or a lost opportunity. And I’m definitely looking forward to seeing a different but equally stylistic side to PD Kim Byung-soo, who did Queen Inhyun’s Man and the first season of Vampire Prosecutor.
Nine follows Flower Boy Next Door and premieres March 11 on tvN.

I love the teasers. tvN has yet to disappoint. Even 12 Men, which wasn't as zippy as the other tvN, was quite enjoyable to watch.
I do hope this is good so I can change my perception of Lee Jin Wook cause I was quite disappointed by his acting in Myung-wol, which isn't really a great show to begin with, except for Eric's acting.

After I saw these teasers I immediately thought: "This is looking more and more like 'The Girl who Leapt Through Time'... except the main character is a guy. Or we could say it's the same story from Chiaki's perspective".

Now that you have mentioned it, I'm suddenly wishing that they're similar!!! I'm already imagining how awesome it would be if both leads time-travel without one knowing that the other can also do it. Things will get so complicated (well it’s bound to be, with two time-travelers running around freely and effing up with history) because of each other's actions and they’ll be like, “What the hell happened? I time-traveled just to fix this and now it’s messed up again?!”
DUDE. I’m clearly getting ahead of myself but damn, with this setup the drama’s fraught with awesome, awesome possibilities!!! Well, whatever this drama turns out to be, I am definitely watching it. Besides, LEE JIN WOOK’S IN IT. Show’s already had me at that.

The 8th wonder of the kdrama world: the awful haircut. If I cut my hair like those kdrama heroines, do you think I'd get a hot guy like them? More like I'd get laughed at. Why, why, why does it have to be that haircut? I'll keep my hairstyle, thanks. ;)
I'm not excited about the leads, but with a proven creative team I'm onboard. Plus it's tvN!

The haircut is horrible, but she is back in the 70s/80s when everybody had horrible haircuts (and I have the pictures to prove it...) so I actually like the effect.
As for the show, it looks epic, and I can't wait.

Hahaha!! I believe that haircut is called an "apple cut" or "coconut husk cut" and I'm guessing it's a wig?--reminds me of Velma from Scooby Doo sans the eyeglasses (so the setting must really have been in the 70's).lol. The teaser started right after FBND and got me interested. Gonna give this one a try and also the one with Song Hye Kyo. Buckle up, folks, we're headed for a big heaping pile of tissues and tears.
I hope this one softens the blow of losing FBND-----no..wait..noooo...Ajummaaa~~!!haha!

She is growing out her hair. It's an awkward phase and what can she do about it? She cut her hair really short a while ago and she looked super cute and different (than when she had long hair)

I've never been fond of the time-travelling genre but this one seems more intriguing than the previous batch of time-travelers so I'll give it a try. The fact that it's also by the same PD of Vampire Prosecutor makes me want to watch it.

Oh I am soooooooooooooooo longing for this. Yes, I'll have to endure the end of Flower Boys Next Door but I'm trusting I'll be still on the FBND cloud for a long while after that show ends.
I only saw the Japanese Operation Proposal and those tiny little increments of time change/time channel stressed me out.
I'm hoping this time travel will not only change the hero/heroine's lives but will somehow cause wholescale historical and neighborhood complexities. I'm hoping for a puzzle here...where blocks of time are moved here and there and there's a feel of a game and plotting and counter-plotting....and where everything comes out very neatly. One can hope.
Thanks so much for this.

It's funny you talk about the stress of watching this type of show. I am the same way with these types of plots.
I will add 2013 to this category.
What I like:
In OP, we are presented with a probable future or present. The hero gets sent back to see if he could change it. We see the small things are different after he does, but the overall END is still the same.
What I don't like:
In 2013, we see a present that is NOT changeable. It is what it is. The audience gets set back to see HOW that happened, but have to keep guessing the whole time at the big picture. I hate this type of narrative as much as I hate ANY foreshadowing in fiction. It is "Little-did-she-know-itis"
Good:
She kissed him, feeling the rightness of their togetherness warm her like the sudden sun breaking through the clouds. She wrote this moment in her heart along with the other happy memories she would treasure for a lifetime.
Hate:
She kissed him, feeling the rightness of their togetherness warm her like the sudden sun breaking through the clouds. She wrote this moment in her heart along with the other happy memories she would treasure for a lifetime, not knowing how little time she had left.
Can't stand when they taint happy moments with dread. LET ME HAVE MY HAPPY MOMENT!
End of rant. LOL

Oh gosh, you totally had me laughing! Yes! Love this term: “Little-did-she-know-itis”
I don't know why they feel they have to tell us that something bad is gonna happen but it makes me feel, "Couldn't you just let me head toward the disaster with blinders on without knowing the future?"
I remember one Japanese drama where they did use the "Things turned out badly" stuff at the beginning but at the end of the story they kinda dropped in this epilogue which hinted at hope and a possible happy ending..in its open-ended way. So we kinda caught up with the narrator at the end and then time moved with us and narrator hopefully. But that is rare in my experience.

Oh my! You managed to sit through the Japanese Operation Proposal? Congrats! I didn't have the patience... I did go through most of the Korean version though...and even if it wasn't good, at least it was a tinny bit better than the Japanese version.
