Yoon Kye-sang and Kim Ok-bin take on legal thriller
by javabeans
Based on a real-life event, there’s a new movie in the works called Minority Opinion, which has cast Yoon Kye-sang (Phungsan Dog, Best Love) in the lead with Kim Ok-bin (Actresses, Thirst) and Yoo Hae-jin (The Unjust, Moss) in supporting roles. It sounds like a taut legal drama, and drawing upon the Yongsan Incident a few years ago (which included civilian deaths) should give the project an added dose of emotional heft.
The Yongsan Incident occurred on January 20, 2009, as a group of apartment tenants protested their eviction when their building was slated for demolition and redevelopment. Police officers raided the building to forcibly remove the tenants from their rooftop protest, a fire broke out, and five residents were killed along with one officer. It took nearly a year for the case to be settled and compensation awarded to the deceased victims’ families.
A novel titled Minority Opinion was written about the incident, and that’ll be the basis of this movie, which is produced by Harimao Pictures (which made Level 7 Civil Servant’s film version). The project has recently finished casting and stars Yoon Kye-sang as a public defender who went into his career “without any particular motivation”; he just ended up there. He becomes the lawyer defending one of the tenants, Park Jae-ho, who killed an officer in a fury after his 16-year-old son was killed by the police in the raid. The police take the stance that they weren’t responsible for the death of the son, and that they were merely acting in the line of duty; the film explores the legal battle that ensues in the struggle to get to the truth.
Kim Ok-bin plays a passionate reporter who can’t stand to see injustice. Yoo Hae-jin is one of those actors who’s been in tons of really great films, putting in solid supporting performances, and he will be playing a sunbae lawyer to Yoon Kye-sang. Moreover, Lee Kyung-young, who was so wonderful as the new coroner Dr. Jo in Vampire Prosecutor 2, plays the father/defendant. Omg, just break our hearts already. He was amazing as the protective surrogate father swooping in in a righteous fury in that drama, and that was when he was fighting vampires; I can only imagine how devastating he’ll be playing a real-world version.
You may recall that Yoon Kye-sang’s next project was supposed to be the hilarious-sounding comedy film Acting Lessons, but production on that has been pushed back so he’s doing this movie first first. Minority Opinion plans to begin filming from March through May.

interesting normally the police like the army seem pretty much a no touch zone in Korea. Politician and big companies are the normal targets, mainly because they are so hand in hand and corrupt I think korean just take stories of what they get up to in stride. Big company that do get court sentances just end up getting a pardon a few months later anyway. Of course in the bad 'old' korea it was the army the big familes companies and politician hand in hand, and I really do not think that really changed all that much, everyone steps small when the army in involved.

I miss YKS on the small screen as the lead. His last was 'Who Are You?", wasn't it? I 'fell in love' with him in that drama.
