Yeon Woo-jin joins When A Man Loves
by girlfriday
Yay, a new drama for Yeon Woo-jin. Arang and the Magistrate’s conflicted killer (or he may still be better known as Ojakkyo’s Maknae Oppa) will be joining the cast of the new MBC drama When A Man Loves as the second lead, completing the love triangle with Song Seung-heon and Shin Se-kyung. It’s a reunion for him with the show’s director, who also did Arang.
This one will be a melodrama, about a gangster (Song Seung-heon) who falls in love with his mob boss’ girl. Uh, that sounds like a bad idea. The boss dies, so our hero starts to date her… and then falls for yet another girl. So basically he’s a criminal and a player? I don’t know which of the women Shin Se-kyung will play, but my guess is, the younger second girlfriend.
Yeon Woo-jin plays Song Seung-heon’s rival, a blunt and brash “young wolf,” who’s used to winning at everything. He’s sharp and confident, but more than feeding his ambition, his dream is to someday start a happy family. The two men will actually be fairly close (as friends or fellow gang members or something else, I don’t know). Their characters are similar in many ways and they start out on each other’s good sides, but the rivalry over Shin Se-kyung will eventually tear them apart.
Sounds dramatic, yo. It’s pretty much a return to the Song Seung-heon of yore, all bloody lip and heart of gold. I suppose given the experiment hodgepodge that was Dr. Jin, it’s better to play it safer than not? Still, I’d pay someone to turn this into a rom-com.
When A Man Loves follows Level 7 Civil Servant and airs in April.

I love my Level 7 Civil Servant, yet it's about time for YWJ to play the main lead. He has the acting chops... maybe not enough fandom to follow him....

*Handing the piggy bank*.
If we talk about acting, I prefer Yeon Woo Jin as the male lead, that's for sure. Of course he doesn't have a "spectacular" physique but I find him so much more interesting on the screen...
I won't watch the show anyway so I can only pray for recaps and beautiful screencaps of that "young wolf".

I found his character in Arang so intriguing despite my hopeless love of Lee Jun-ki, and even though I may get shot by Yoo Seung-ho fans for saying this, I think he was actually better-written and better-acted (and more sympathetic) than the second lead guy in the drama that followed Arang, aka I Miss You.

really? I definitely am not a fan of Song Seung Hoon, but I find Yeon Woo Jin's acting a little green.

In the first half of Ojakkyo Brothers, yes, but he was much better in Arang once they were a few episodes into its run and the reveal about him came out.
Yoo Seung-ho, bless him, is actually a better actor but he was way too young to really convincingly play a 25-year-old in IMY, and that is not a comment on his skill but his age.

Why why is he doing this? I blame it all on Dr Jin. They introduced him to all that blood and gore and planted that fetus in his brain. No man could remain sane after all that.

Come to think of it, it's true that he never get the girl since his Cinderella Sister day to date. Not even in OL, where there's no real threat as well. I do hope he would have a happy ending this time, but... @_@

Yay to Maknae Tae Pil oppa! I'm not watching Arang yet, but I love him in Ojakgyo Brothers and he won best actor in drama special @ KBS awards last year.
He's great doing comedy but not really hit me when doing more serious role.. But I love him. Probably will root for the second lead instead :-)

I saw the drama special that he was in, Just an Ordinary Love, and he was great in that as well as definitely holding his own against "bigger" players in Arang. He is just another one of those people that I don't like to see in second leads because second leads get the shaft. Really, can we not get some satisfaction for the second leads? If the drama gods are going to keep putting people like him as second leads (Kim Ji Hoon, Lee Ki Woo, Yoo Seung-Ho, and Park Ki-Woong come to mind) then please give them something else beside angst. At least don't pair them up with the horrible second female lead!
Just another question, while I'm on my rant. Why are the second male leads often people we like even when they are doing horrible things (think Rooftop Prince) but the second female leads are generally so annoying or hateful you just want to get an eraser out? I am all for bromance (love it actually), but why can't the female leads have real friends but only rivals?

I know some big names now like Kim Soo Hyun, Lee Min Ho and Song Jun Ki plays a small parts before they climb into the hierachy of leading man.
I guess, in KDrama land you need to have a strong backup agency to push you into the KDrama lead teritory.
But sometimes, talent speaks for itself... It will get notice sooner or later...

There are quite a few young actors (and actresses!) I'm dying to see as first leads for the first time - quite a few actors and actresses seem to spend a while doing second leads before settling properly into main lead territory, or switch between the two - Song Joong-ki got his first turn as leading man only last year, with Nice Guy, Moon Chae-won did second leads for a couple years before The Princess' Man, hell even Lee Jun-ki, UEE, Sung Joon and Jang Geun-seok have done their time as second leads.
Now I have my fingers crossed for Kim Bum, post-army Kim Jae-wook and Yoo Seung-ho, Lee Young-kwang, Kim Woo-bin and Kim Min-seo, to name just a few - they deserve their turn in the spotlight as first leads.

yeah, Arang's cast was pretty much perfection in their roles, and the three leads most of all - I'd never seen him in anything before this, but he made me as interested (and sorry for) a second lead as I could ever be without having active Second Lead Syndrome - and that was only because the main lead was LJK!

Lee Si Young is one of the rare cases. She's quite good at "upping" the lead girl. Birth of a rich can attest to that. She was well-loved than lee Bo young's character. Park Shi Hoo has also played 2nd leads who usurps the lead territory. Lol.
On another note, I still can't believe "maknae oppa" is 3 years older than his "hyung" - joo won. Lol.

Watching Lee Si Young in Birth was an amazing experience. How she kept up that energy throughout and how Nam Goong Min kept a straight face across from her insanity are two great mysteries to me.

omg yes!
Kim Min-seo is another second-lead actress who turns out better than the people she's playing second fiddle to - I've only seen her in two series, but she was way more watchable than both Park Min-young in Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Han Ga-in in Moon/Sun.

Yeah, it's been almost a year since Ojakkyo ended, and I'm still head over heels for that show. Such a good family drama.

Oh sh*t! I have already crossed this drama out of my possible-watch-list but now this happens! Not a fan of both SSH and SSK acting. At ALL! But I adore Yeon Woo Jin. He is wonderful in all three drama roles I watched him earlier. In fact, he pulled me through the later half of Arang, when things move so slow. I guessed I will watch (and read) selected scenes with YWJ in it!

If this weren't starring SSH and SSK I'd watch just for Yeon Woo Jin, who was an absolute revelation in Arang. I mean that boy CAN ACT! Wow! He blew me away. In fact, if I were SSH I'd be scared because YWJ is such a better actor than SSH he'll just make him look bad. Everyone prepare for YWJ to steal this show, but I know I won't be there to watch.

Last year, he graced small screen with memorable performance in 3 dramas (OB, Ordinary Love and Arang), I hope he continues that pattern this year. I never get enough of him, his half smile and the calm-intense eyes ... Duh! I'd joyfully get lost and washed away.. ♥◡♥

I'm sorry oppa, but SSH as a lead & act as a gangster? That is too much for me. Unless I get to see your face in every.single.scene,which is not going to happen, I'll have to pass this one. But that doesn't mean that I don't support you anymore, it just I'm still recovering from Dr fetus, that is all.
