Yawang’s teary-eyed and gun-toting teaser
by girlfriday
So… this is an odd teaser for Yawang — not the high-drama of it, since a melodrama being melodramatic is no big surprise — but I don’t think the first lady is going to be wielding a gun to make her dreams come true, yeah?
Upcoming SBS Monday-Tuesday drama Yawang has finally released a teaser, featuring leads Su Ae and Kwon Sang-woo in a tear-filled metaphorical standoff. Is it just me, or does it seem like more and more dramas are doing these metaphor teasers, where teasing your drama’s actual content has been replaced with making a splashy (and most often teary) thematic statement?
Though in the case of shows like I Miss You, I guess it wasn’t actually all that metaphorical in the end; Rainy Window of Pain was rather accurate. Yawang is a story about an ambitious woman and her ambition’s roadkill, the love of her life. Su Ae stars as the heroine who overcomes extreme poverty and dreams of being the nation’s first lady (why not president beats me), and Kwon Sang-woo plays the man who loves her unconditionally ever since their childhood together in an orphanage.
Well it sure is purty. Judging from the sad overtones of their love story and her cutthroat ambition, he’s gotta be the man she has to leave to get what she wants. The lines from the teaser:
Su Ae: The person I loved more than the days that we met / Missed more than the days I had loved.
Kwon Sang-woo: With eyes wide open, awake all night / I thought I could die with that person and be happy.
Both: The one who simultaneously foretold the world’s joy and its end / I loved that one person.
Heavy. I guess it wouldn’t be much of a melo if she got to have both love and success. On the upside, we get to watch Su Ae act her heart out? Mostly what I got from that teaser was, I miss watching her play a badass, the rest of Athena notwithstanding.
Yawang follows King of Dramas and premieres January 14 on SBS.

Ouch heavy stuff, Yawang. Dunno why I am getting drawn to melos, I thought we left those behind in '12. Side not, Su Ae is always wonderful. And hell, I am anxious about the whole ambition of becoming the first lady. Very Alice in Wonderland...

At least Soo Ae and Kwon Sang Woo look good together. I like his new hairstyle - makes him look less smarmy.

"why not the president beats me"
Because there's a Chinese saying that goes, the one man (king/president) who is above all (citizens), but is beneath one (wife).
First Lady FTW.

I understand the notion of woman wanting to be in the position of power HELSELF instead of being the grey eminence behind her husband. However, as this is not a story about morally upright, ambitious woman who wants to become ruler to make things better, I feel no need for her to seek openly powerful position. Actually, I think that for a this type of woman as they are portraying Su Ae to be, being grey eminence suits much better.

So does that mean that the husband of the current president-elect has more power than she does?

She is doomed then, Korean dramas have taught me One Great Truth - if a girl is not married by age 30, it's all over.

So this is kind of scary because she's got a similar character description as everyone's favorite gold digger from Nice Guy (Jae Hee). I loved Nice Guy, but with that drama, I spent the first 8 episodes mesmerized by Song Joong-ki's face. So I'm biased.
And I really really wanted Soo Ae's character to not want to be the wife of an important man. Be the important one! Can I get those dice though?

Such dreams (i.e of being the important one) are all too inaccessible for most women for a variety of reasons. Her goal of being 'First Lady' might have struck the original manhwa writer as slightly more realistic given the character's background.
Plus, we still don't know if they actually mean the President's wife.

Being the one in the spotlight and being the grey eminence are two different things. First one doesn't suit every one, some people don't want to be seen wielding power openly. Also, being a president's wife puts you in a very different position than being the president for example what comes to the public opinion. President might be disliked if he has to do tough decisions but his wife can still be viewed favorably. Maybe Su Ae's character craves more for the recognition and fame than actual political power.
Also, for a person who seeks power just for the sake of it, aiming for a position of president's wife is MUCH more realistic and easier, as you say. For a woman it would be very difficult to become president in South Korea. Yes, I know that it just happened, but 1) they didn't know this when Yawang was planned and 2) even after this it will be more difficult for a woman to achieve highest power than it is for a man. One female president is a step to the right direction but it doesn't mean that chances for women and men are equal.

"..President might be disliked if he has to do tough decisions but his wife can still be viewed favorably.."
You can see that in the US, where President Obama's wife has a much higher approval rating than he does.

Also, I forgot to mention the importance of the background. Su Ae's character has grown in orphanage so she has NO political connections in the beginning. On the contrary, new president of Korea is a daughter of ex-president. This is pretty common in societies where gender equality is not very strong yet, daughters/wives of politicians may be able to get important positions (Benazir Bhutto, Sonia Gandhi, Indira Gandhi et.). Even for a man without connections it would be immensely difficult to get an important political position, but for a woman it's virtually impossible.
So if you're an orphan without money, connections or highest education, you're best and probably only chance is to become a wife of someone important.

melodrama doesnt draw me at all, it took me the longest time to watch love rain because it had melodrama stamped all over it. but....i think i am trying this because of KSW :D

I think that really outrageous melodrama's are fun. If you care too much about the characters it can drag you down. But...if you have some distance you can just enjoy the spectacle. I loved Equator Man and Nice Guy, despite all their problems, they were so much fun and I didn't internalize the angst. Missing You is like that too. The characters cry and look very pretty, but when the episode is over you can just walk away.
This, by the way, is not my attitude towards human relationships...just melo relationships.

Eh...something about Kwon Sang Woo turns me off completely. The music they used for this sounds so corny and outdated. All in all this drama doesn't look so good and that's because I'm going to miss KOD really bad. So in comparison this looks like cow dung.

KSW seems a little too self aware of his looks (or is at least marketed that way). Somehow it is more appealing, if a guy projects an image of modesty. Image being the operative word here.

I have no idea what the manhwa plot was.
But given that Korea does have a female president now, wouldn't it be funny if Su Ae spent her whole life plotting to become First Lady and successfully getting a husband to run for President .... then gets her comeuppance on Election Day when an even more ambitious woman gets to be jjang?

WTF. Kwon Sang Woo is such a good looking guy! Also, too many Kdramas feature too many idols these days anyway. Most of them should stick to singing then acting. If anything, I'll take a good actor over a good looking idol any day!

Bad Love was pretty comedic to me because it was THAT bad of a Kdrama! ;) With that said, no, he has NOT acted in a romantic romcom drama but he has in a few Kmovies.
Still awaiting for him & Son Ye Jin to finally make a romantic Kdrama or Kmovie together!
