I Miss You: Episode 4
by girlfriday
The search begins, as we face the fallout from yesterday’s tragedy, and it’s actually Detective Kim who takes center stage in this episode, as a much-needed (and let’s face it, only) father figure in these kids’ lives. Jung-woo grows up as well, and man, I know that growing up is hard to do, but today that just feels like the understatement of the century.
EPISODE 4 RECAP
Jung-woo lies in his bed practically catatonic, while his little sister Ah-reum cries because he cries, and tries fruitlessly to cheer him up with a song.
The doctor tells Dad that Jung-woo needs to go to a hospital, and might even need to spend some time in the psych ward. That doesn’t sound like such a bad idea, but Dad’s response is to leave Jung-woo in his stepmother’s hands and ignore the whole problem.
Soo-yeon’s mom calls out Jung-woo’s name from the front gate, and he panics at the sound. He pulls the covers over his head and shudders in fear, “I’m sorry, I was wrong.”
Eun-joo is there with her, and suggests that she should go inside and find Jung-woo. So Mom creates the perfect diversion, flailing around for the bodyguards, while Eun-joo sneaks in behind them. Nice.
She goes tearing through the house screaming his name, and it’d be funny if the circumstances weren’t so dire. I love her pluck. She finally finds him in his room, huddled under a desk, shell-shocked.
She asks why he’s hiding—does he feel guilty about something? Where is Soo-yeon?? How can he be sitting here when their family is upside-down? All good questions.
He just rocks back and forth, trembling like a leaf, not saying a word. Eun-joo pleads with him that they have to find Soo-yeon, and shows him her journal.
“You said you’d never pretend not to know her again! You said all you needed was her! See, it’s all written here! Look! Don’t you know how much that dummy liked you?!” Oof.
Stepmom and the maid drag her away before she can say anything else, but she leaves the journal behind.
Detective Kim finds the kidnappers’ van abandoned in the woods near the crime scene, and gets to work searching for any evidence left behind.
Meanwhile, Dad’s torturing one of the kidnappers, demanding to know where “that bitch” is. (He means Hye-mi. I don’t think he gives a rat’s patootie where Soo-yeon is.) He spares the man his life in exchange for finding her and bringing her back.
After a while, Jung-woo reaches for the journal and starts to read all the little details Soo-yeon noted about him—how he always turns to the left when she calls his name, how he memorizes the multiplication tables backwards.
We see some of their sweet, mundane moments doing homework or hanging out at their playground, as she narrates in her journal that it’s weird how she thinks about him even when he’s right next to her.
Her gift for him was a little good luck mantra of hers—that thing she always does with the ripples in the water as she chants, “He’ll come, he won’t come.”
She writes that if there are five ripples, it means your wish will come true, and she wanted to share that with him on a rainy day.
He cries as he reads: “The wind blows / I think of you / The wind blows in my eyes / I think of you / I run till I’m out of breath / I think of you / The street lamp flickers / I think of you / From the street lamp to home is 280 steps / I think of you.”
He weeps as he thinks of how he left her lying there, clutches the book to his heart.
Detective Kim stops by the house to pick up some of Soo-yeon’s things, in hopes of finding a link to Jung-woo that can connect any of the forensic evidence that comes up to the two kids.
But then he gets a call from the lab—the blood they found matches Soo-yeon, but there’s evidence that it wasn’t just a kidnapping. His face twists as he hears the words, “There was evidence of rape.”
He falls to the ground. Eun-joo asks him what’s wrong, but all he can do is cry. He holds Eun-joo’s little hand in his.
His tears soon turn to anger and he darts up, “That son of a bitch. That son of a bitch! Eun-joo, look at me. From this moment on, I’m not looking for Soo-yeon, but for you. I’m not going as a detective, but as a father. So I’m going to do anything. I’m going to do anything to catch him, and I won’t leave him be. Can I do that? Can I just go crazy?”
What a good papa. Eun-joo, ever the awesome the little girl, shouts right back, “Of course you should! Of course you should go crazy—you’re my dad! If you don’t, I’ll be really mad! Find her. Bring Soo-yeon back.”
And thus begins his quest. (And honestly, this is the drama I’d rather be watching—Surrogate Dad, Action Hero.)
The higher-ups threaten him with his job, but Detective Kim says he stopped being a true cop the day he agreed to cover up the fact that Soo-yeon’s father wasn’t a murderer. He says he chose to be pathetic, but now he’ll stop at nothing: “What would you do if YOUR daughter were missing?!”
He storms into Jung-woo’s house armed with a warrant (and a sneer for Chairman Han), and Jung-woo surprises them all by coming downstairs and asking what took Ajusshi so long. He silently sticks his hands out, to be cuffed.
Detective Kim says he’s sorry, but he’s gone a little insane right now, and cuffs him. Once they’re alone in the car, he says this is the only way he could reach Jung-woo, and that he fully intends to set him free.
Meanwhile, Chairman Han sends his minions to track down the second kidnapper before the cops do. After letting him go? Urg, I’d be madder if I cared about you, but I don’t.
Detective Kim takes Jung-woo to the river, and Jung-woo confesses that he ran away. “Soo-yeon came to save me, but I ran away.” It’s in no way a thing you could blame a fifteen-year old for, and yet it’s the last thing a father would want to hear.
Detective Kim just asks if Jung-woo has things he needs to say to Soo-yeon, because he does too. He tells Jung-woo the truth about her father: “I made her… a murderer’s daughter.”
Their mutual guilt is actually the thing to make them get their act together, and thankfully, Ajusshi is able to get Jung-woo back to the land of the living. He says, eyes full of purpose, that he’ll say everything that he can remember from that night.
The important clues: one of them was missing a finger, cracked out on something he called “ice,” and the van they found in the woods is the same one they were kidnapped in.
Detective Kim suggests that one of the men grabbed Soo-yeon while the other lit the warehouse on fire (to destroy evidence), but Jung-woo says that’s not right: Dad came before the police, and he had the bad guys.
He darts up, ready to go question his father, but Detective Kim urges him to wait, and that he shouldn’t suspect his father. Yes he should! Yes he should! Not everyone is like you, Ajusshi.
At home, Eun-joo stops short at the sight of Soo-yeon’s dress hanging from the clothesline, and pins it up with a clothespin. Inside, Mom lays out Soo-yeon’s uniform and caresses it like she’s there, lying next to her.
Detective Kim finally catches a break when a witness comes forth to say that he saw a young girl get hauled over a man’s shoulder. They search on the riverbank where the girl was spotted, and start to dig where the police dog indicates. Uh oh.
He starts to dig, and uncovers Soo-yeon’s sweater—the matching one to Eun-joo’s that he bought for the girls.
Jung-woo waits by the river, throwing stones and playing Soo-yeon’s game: “She’ll come, she won’t come…”
The fingerless druggie angle makes it relatively easy to find their target, and Detective Kim starts trailing one of the baddies.
Chairman Han continues his quest for The Money, and acts annoyed when Jung-woo comes to ask him about the baddies that they caught that night. Head Minion jumps in to say it was his fault, and that when he went back, the warehouse was already on fire and they got away in the chaos.
Chairman Han walks out, telling the secretary to either send Jung-woo back to the States or lock him up in his room. Gee, why aren’t we suspicious of Dad again?
Detective Kim follows Baddie No. 1 to Baddie No. 2, and beats them both up without breaking a sweat. He demands to know where Soo-yeon is. He’s got the first guy cuffed to the wall while he beats the second guy, and that’s when he sees it: the missing finger.
He lights up in a furious rage, and STOMPS the bloody hell out of the rapist’s groin. “Does this hurt? Does this hurt, you son of a bitch?!” Well, at least karma’s on our side today. I hope the damage is permanent.
He calms down enough to ask again where Soo-yeon is, and the sick bastard laughs as he says he threw her in the river, “kerplunk,” and killed her. Oof, poor Ajusshi.
The media covers the reenactment (which I always find so gruesome, even if it’s just with a mannequin), and Jung-woo watches on the television. Mom shows up in person, and stumbles up to the killer. It’s of course snowing that day.
She begs to be allowed to ask him one thing, and so they bring the man over to her. She searches his eyes, “W-why?” She asks so innocently why, like there should be a logical reason.
He turns to go without answering her, and she grabs his jacket, pleading with him to say that Soo-yeon isn’t really dead. She wails that she’ll forgive everything if he’ll just tell her that she’s still alive. Augh, even though we know she couldn’t have died the way he’s telling it, her pain is still gut-wrenching.
Jung-woo goes running out of the hospital into the snow, all the way to their playground. He checks under the slide, just to be sure. She isn’t there. Gah, that kills me.
Imaginary Soo-yeon comes and asks him the same thing she asked on that first day they met: “Will you be here tomorrow?”
Jung-woo: “No. Tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that… I’ll be here every day.” The vision disappears, but then he hears a familiar squeaking of the swings. He looks up with such hopeful eyes, but it’s just the wind, pushing along an empty swing.
He thinks through the order of events one more time, and something about Dad and his secretary’s stories don’t add up. He runs back home and tears apart Dad’s office to look for clues.
Inside a locked drawer, he finds surveillance photos of Detective Kim, a police profile, and a cell phone. He turns it on as a last-ditch effort, thinking it a lifeline to Soo-yeon. Suddenly, it rings. Someone’s calling him? As soon as he turns the thing on? Buh.
He answers it, trembling, and it’s Soo-yeon on the other end, “Jung-woo-ya…” But he barely has time to say her name before Nurse Hye-mi pushes her away and snatches the phone out of her hand.
She screams that they shouldn’t have kept her alive, and Hyung-joon (clearly the one who saved her) helps her up and demands that her life be spared. Soo-yeon’s face is covered in bandages, though we don’t know why.
Chairman Han grabs the phone out of Jung-woo’s hands as well, and argues that Soo-yeon is dead and he’s being crazy. He swears he’s not imagining it, but the more he insists, the colder Dad gets.
He slaps Jung-woo across the face and throws the phone to the ground. Jung-woo goes to pick up the pieces, only now realizing the truth: “You were never going to look for Soo-yeon, were you? You lied.”
Dad doesn’t even care to continue the lie, “Of course I did.” He calls her trash and a murderer’s daughter—someone he shouldn’t be connected to in the first place.
Jung-woo gets up to face him and asks if Dad really only trusts his son. Dad: “I trust no one else, only my son.”
Jung-woo: “Don’t. Don’t trust me. I don’t trust you anymore.” Nice. He goes up to his room to pick up Soo-yeon’s journal.
Dad orders him to stop, warning that if he walks out of this house now, it’s the end. Jung-woo doesn’t even give a glance back as he marches right past him and out the door without missing a beat.
Detective Kim is concurrently having his own rebellion, as he smashes up his precinct over how little anyone around here cares for procedure and fact. He asks if they’re just supposed to take everybody at their word—if the bastard said he killed Soo-yeon, he just killed her? Without proof?
He simultaneously gets fired and quits, which is right when Jung-woo comes running through the door, “Ajusshi, Soo-yeon is alive!” The exchange is actually really sweet. Ajusshi: “I know.” Jung-woo: “No, she’s really alive!” Ajusshi: “I really know!”
He gets down on his knees and begs Ajusshi to find her. “I trust you.” It means so much, in light of the crushing blow that he can’t trust his own father. He turns to the other cops too, “I trust all of you.” He cries, “I have something to say to her. I…miss her.”
Hye-mi decides she’s had enough of babysitting, and threatens to leave Hyung-joon behind if he insists on staying with the girl. She snaps the necklace from his neck.
He warns that it’s useless until he turns eighteen anyway, and that she can’t get to the money without him. He counters that he won’t go anywhere without Soo-yeon.
She sits numbly, even as Hyung-joon shows her the newspaper with her own murder in the headlines. He says that Jung-woo left her and isn’t looking for her, and she finally screams, “That’s not true!”
It’s as if him voicing her fear makes her face the trauma all over again, and she breaks down in a fit of terrifying screams as she relives the horror.
And then it fades into the same future sequence we saw at the beginning: Adult Jung-woo running to Soo-yeon, Crying Hyung-joon, and Bullet-in-the-brainpan Jung-woo.
As he lies there bleeding to death, he says in voiceover: “I’m not crying because I’m sad. I’m crying because the wind is blowing.”
COMMENTS
Oof. This show. It’s beautiful, but it’s a painfest, and I’m pretty sure it relishes doling out the pain. I don’t think there was one tearless scene in the entire episode, and Yeo Jin-gu—I didn’t know he could cry that many different ways, but I’m not sure I wanted to know either. He’s doing a fantastic job as a performer, but when I get scene after scene with tears upon tears folded into flashbacks with tears, I start to get desensitized, and I’m not sure that’s the effect we’re going for. Well, it’s either that or Total Emotional Destruction. Either way I’m ducking for cover.
There were solid, uplifting moments, of course—Ajusshi stepping up to become a dad to Soo-yeon even if it’s too late, and Jung-woo’s disillusionment with his own father. It was a nice parallel between the two men, both lost and losing faith in their figures of authority, and questioning themselves for the selfish choices they made, both feeling guilty for failing to protect Soo-yeon. I do really like both these characters and their struggles to grow up and become men in different phases in their lives.
In fact a good number of the themes in the drama are really very sweet and uplifting, like outsiders banding together, and found families being tighter than blood. But it’s the heavy melodramatic hammering and re-hammering of the pain that takes away from the could-be warm-hearted, uplifting kind of execution. Instead we live through the trauma the first time, we cry as we suffer the fallout, again as we get flashbacks to the original trauma in case we forgot, and then we’re to cry as the snow falls to remind us of how Fate is a total bitch. IT’S TOO MUCH.
We really wanted to give the show a good lengthy trial period because we’re fans of the cast. But it probably won’t come as a surprise that we won’t be continuing with recaps. It’s a well-made show, so the choice has nothing to do with the quality of the show itself in this case, but rather the feeling (and okay, fear) that the pain has only just begun. It’s just not how I want to spend the next ten Thursdays of my life, yunno?
I do hope for good things for Soo-yeon and Jung-woo, and will even exit with a rain dance to make that flash-forward a dream sequence, a drama-within-a-drama, a loop in a time slip—or whatever else that makes it not true. And I’ll choose to remember the few sweet droplets of happiness that we did get, mixed in among the tears.

When I thought Nice Guy was f-inf up the Wed-Thu slot, we have an upgraded version in the form of I Miss You.
Oy. Don't Koreans know that Wednesdays have the highest rate of suicide happening? Or they just want to drive up the rate?!

No joking, at least from what I know. My prof did a study on suicide among Native American youth using trend data over 20 years, and indeed suicide most often occurs on Wednesday *__*
I have intentionally stayed away from I Miss You because I have not been much into melodrama, but so many people complemented on how beautifully it's shot and how well the story goes. I finally ventured to watch Ep 1 today and ended up watching the other episodes. Very solid story, heart-wrenching. I will wait to see how the adult cast go on to deliver the story to decide whether to stick with this show or not. The kid actors are simply amazing.

Sad to hear that you will stop recapping :( Maybe a guest recaper could take over ;) ?
I really enjoyed the fourth episode...I can't get over how the drama is shot...beautiful director work ♥ And omg, the child actors are SO talented, Yeo Jingu, you made me cry! I almost don't want them to grow up T_T
One thing that I really liekd was the scene with detective/appa kim and the criminals...how the criminal taunts him that the worst punishment he can get is 7 years. I wonder if it's the directors/writers subtle critic on S.Koreas weak punishments on rape...

Please continue recapping. This is the only way I can really digest this drama in its entirety. When things get too much while watching and they move too quick, I rely on your recaps to understand. And although it's a really tragic drama, I think it's a drama that should be recapped. I'd like to see your views on 'rape' and even more, I'd like to see how rape affects everyone in the future and the repercussions it will have and also the pathway to healing for victims. It's an issue that needs to be acknowledged more and potentially if you guys continue recapping, it'll allow other people a chance to experience a different outlook on dramas.

Though I hate to part ways with the two of you as I enjoy the witty/cynical remarks, i am seriously thinking that maybe if no one will recap this drama then MAYBE MORE PEOPLE WILL WATCH instead. Is that even possible?

I wish this episode had featured more of the future wounded tragic villain. I want to see his woundedness too, so my heart can be overwhelmed with stress and confusion for everyone involved. Seeing all the pounding tragic grief of the OTP characters is too much for me. I know they're meant for each other but --what with all this tragedy and weeping-- it's becoming all too easy to be on the side of the OTP. That bothers me. I don't like easy answers and easy rests for the heart. I'd rather be on the side of both the goodie and the baddie because everyone has experienced pain. Am hoping the next episode balances things out a bit more. IF they're gonna overdo the tragic, they need to toss some scenes to formerly-imprisoned-wounded son/uncle.

Are we on the same drama? What son/uncle? Is there an Uncle in this drama? Plus, in this drama the hero is flawed. So... I think you commented on the wrong post. It happens.

Isn't Jung-woo the "nephew" of the kid who was imprisoned who will be future villain/third wheel -- who will be played by Seung-ho? Chairman's son versus Chairman's Dad's son? I thought that was the relationship. Maybe my short-cut way of explaining it is confusing..but that's how i figured it.

yeah, guy with cane (because of bum leg and imprisonment) is gonna be third wheel...sorta. So I want to see his pain shown as well. So he's not merely some spoiler but someone whose sorrows we see balancing out the sorrows of the OTP's. I jus wanted him to have more airtime in this episode.

LOL. I reread that sentence. You were referring to one person (the future villian). I thought you meant HJW/KHJ relationship needed to be deeply established before they become adult nemesis. HJW = nephew, KHJ = uncle.
That was "my-bad" for misinterpreting what you wrote.
So please keep your son/uncle theory.

I don't mind your shoulding on me, but I don't think "IF they’re gonna overdo the tragic, they need to toss some scenes to formerly-imprisoned-wounded son/uncle" would have worked either. The imprisoned wounded character was not a nephew. Even so, thank you for telling me what I "should have just said."

JB and GF please please keep doing abstracts, not long ago felt the excitement and expectation to see a drama, really this is something worth seeing, just with only 4 chapters I can not stop praising IMY by its great performance and the other to be a drama as beautiful and high quality. but if I will accept your decision with resignation but I am very sorry that something that is well done and very seldom we see such as IMY, can not be seen through highlights and interesting opinion.

I did not get the impression that this was an "easy" decision for them, at all.
I understand your disappointment, but to be fair to the Dramabeans staff, doing a recap is a huge investment of time, energy, and thought. Instead of just crying into their hankies and then moving on, doing a recap means they have to watch this sad material again, and again, and again, and capture screen shots of the blood and tears, and describe all the hurt and anger and pain to us in detail.
Conversely, a few times they have dropped shows because they just weren't interesting, or were obviously going to have shoddy writing and shabby production values. It is their time, after all.
If they decide, on a few very rare occasions, not to continue recaps, I think the least we can do is respect their decisions.
If you want to look for other recaps, I would suggest the Kdrama links in http://outsideseoul.blogspot.com/2012/08/kdrama-linkapoloza.html
as a place to start.

@Denya88 Like Skelly said, recapping a drama takes hours and hours. Why would you want to subject them to spending hours and hours recapping a drama that depresses them? It won't be healthy for them. They aren't paid to do this and you can google other websites that will recap this.

i watched this drama even if i swore that i will never watch korean melodrama after sorry i love you, but my favorite actors are on the cast and i couldn't resist.
the strange thing is that here in europe on tv there are tinghs that are worse than what is descibed in the drama, even in the news.
i cry and i tell myself that is not real why you don't cry like this for crimnal minds when u know that the killers are real...
anyway thaks for the recap u guys are great and i think that i will stop here too.

I also understand gf and java's decision not to recap.
and to the sprouters of silliness, like pouting about it, remember not everyone like being morose and wallowing in sadness or enjoy seeing people in pain and suffering even if it is make believe, stop being so ungrateful for their past efforts and just watch the show and you do the shows that they do not recap.

this drama is beautiful
i cried a river for it
the most beautiful scene for me is when detective Kim said to his daughter that he will search for So Yeon as a dad searching for his daughter instead of a police
that scene drove me nut and tear me like crazy

They did great together.
The detective is one of my fav characters, and it looks like EJ as a grown-up will take after her dad.
Does the synopsis say she is a cop, too? I will go check.

Thanks for the first couple recaps for this drama.
The last two episodes was an emotional gut retching roller coaster.. brilliantly portrayed by these two fine young actors. I felt emotional drained and cried along with poor Soo Yeon when Hyun Joon told her Jung Woo wasn't looking for her because she died.
Poor hapless Soo Yeon has gone through such a unfortunate horrific childhood. I hope that she can forgive and forget her ugly past when she comes back and meets Jung Woo as adults. It doesn't appear that she is lucky enough to have amnesia, so she may heal from the physical pain and suffering, but the emotional scars are extremely harder to recover.
I was rooting for Detective Kim when he beat the bejeesuz out of her rapist and was hoping for permanent groin damage. Detective Kim was the only adult with a sense of justice. Yay! Detective Kim!

Well I feel sad you guys are not recapping it anymore, but if its pain is just too much to bare, just drop it - this is a show, supposed to entertain people not piss them or something like it.
I wish HeadsNo2 would take it or Gummi or KaedeJun - even if I always felt like Heads is the one who goes into the darker side. Not in a Luke-Skywalker-bad-way if you know what I mean. Sorry, my grammar just sucks.
In addition to what everybody else has said, I think we all should just stop badmouthing who's commenting, If you don't agree, say it, but don't start offending the other person, mostly because you probably never ever seen this person outside DB, so you should respect people, treat them nice, you don't have to take personal offense.
For personal reasons I'm rather touched by IMY, and am intending in watching it. Pain is not the same for everybody, some can take it, some not. That's why we survive people.

Recapping is time consuming and should be done with enjoyment. I had an inkling that this drama is not exactly your cup of tea, JB and GF, so thanks for giving it a try anyway.
As for this die-hard melo addict, I must continue on this journey with my newest obsession even though I shall miss your witty commentary and insightful thoughts. ^_^

DB writers, thank you for all your recaps and comments after each episode. I have to hand it to you all ***LOUD CLAPPING*** for have the guts to do so as well as to decide to stop watching a show. I'm sure you have gone through experiences of regretting to continue watching because of your followers and I respect that you provide an open forum for everyone to write their opinions and comments no matter what they may be.
It's so ironic that majority of the shows/movies have some themes of intolerance and it appears there are some followers who have exactly this same trait. Where is the respect that we should all have for one another? Just agree to disagree and let's move on. In life we all have choices and one of the choices here is to continue to watch/read or not. You should not disrespect anyone who chooses not to, be they DB or readers.
Have a wonderful, blessed day! :-)

Awww please don't say you'll quit recapping this show just yet!
Can you please give it another week, 2 episodes?
Give the the incoming adult cast a chance to act out how the story might go--after all, I'm sure Park Yoochun, Yoon Eun Hye, and Yoo Seung Ho's acting are some of the good reasons to watch!^^

Oh no! I really wish you would keep recaping this show!!! At least give it a try for a few more episodes...
About this episode, I'm still traumatized over Jung Woo leaving a girl/your lover, who just got raped, on the ground and running away... I don't know how I'll be able to root for this character! Micky, you'll have a lot to do in order for me to like Jung Woo again.
But then, at least I could understand his "survival instinct", which is not the case for Su Yeon. How could she use her only chance to call someone to call the guy who just left you behind to save his ass? I understand she's madly in love but at least, resent him a little or call your mom who's crying her eyes out. And is she held hostage or something? Otherwise, why is she just not going home...?
And why did Jung Woo not tell detective Kim CLEARLY Su Yeon just called him? So many things making me angry in this episode...

I have to express my appreciation of your recaps JB and GF you both did a great job. I truly enjoyed all your interpretative skills and cynical humor.

All things aside, including my love for the drama aside, I don't think you should recap the show if it's emotionally difficult for you. At one point in one's life, one has to take care of him/herself instead of doing what others want. If it's mentally burdensome, then don't do it.For the sake of your own mental health. Those who love the drama to bits (points @ me) can just watch the da_n drama (I plan to) and comment on it at various other places (it might be lonely, but suck it up).
At times like this I wish viki had licensing for USA. Da_n MBC and their miserly ways! LOL

Wow, gf so true- not a single tearless scene in this episode. So sad. I am repeating myself, but adults who do not protect children - lowest scumbags and that pretty much describes all but the detective. Talk about stolen childhoods, that's hard to watch. I SO hope you wait until the grown up Jung yoo and Soo yeon kick in. Where will that go? I'm super wide awake. Not falling asleep anytime soon after watching that.

It is funny I watched fortune tellers/ghost sweepers and I miss you E03 the same night but I miss you freaks me out more than ghosts. After that,I dreamed Jung woo coming back in his dream sequence, only to find out Soo young is in fact a ghost. This show's making me crazy. In which way,I don't care anymore.I know it maybe useless but can't u guys continue recapping?I'm strangely addicted to this show.
Isn't it weird how Hyun joon is the 1 behind the kidnap+rape but he's also the 1 saving Soo young.I can't call him neither a good nor a bad guy.Crackling my brain.

I totally understand that you guys stop recapping this drama. Jeon woochi's premiering next wednesday anyway :x But seriously I do get that the unnecessary pain and misery of this drama is a bit too over the top to invest so much time and thought into doing recaps for it. I'm still watching because I'm still interested in the story though the super weepy scenes and any more unnecessary pain-inducing plot devices will turn off my brain for a bit. Does stopping recaps means you girls will stop watching...? Because I'd love to hear your thoughts about it in the next podcast when this drama ends.

I normally hide when i see melodramas. Cos it is too painful. When i remember Autumn In my heart i just hide. But well i really do hope this will be an awesome one and i hope that in the end at leas the characters will get a fair chance.
I love the fact that the kids are doing a great job. Omg like Kim So Hyun is awesome. She brings out a lovely character and of course Jung Woo is awesome as well. Though this has lot of confusion , i think everything will come in to the right state. I am glad that the ratings have increased and i was bit sad when it was low as these actors are doing a great job.
As one of you commented.. we will not see the cuteness of Go Eun Chan :D ahaa.. This is more serious it seems and i am really looking forward to watch this drama. Though it takes me time to watch it was i need subtitles to understand, the coming couple of wednesday and Thursdays will be my priorities. haha :D let's hope that the drama will be awesome in coming days and rays of happiness will be there..

Thanks for the recap, and your decision to stop makes total sense. The time, intellectual and emotional commitments to recapping are vastly bigger to just watching.
It would be cool if you guys did a check-in later up the road a piece to say how you felt. If you really really don't like how the adult cast does, it would be a really short piece.
Maybe Santa can write it, or if you did a conversation post with your (no pressure here) witty banter.
I really really like this show.
Swirling around in my mind/heart are a combo positive and negative feelings I had from watching the start of CYHMH and the start of The Equator Man.
CYHMH was a sobfest, too. Children, husbands, others wailing at the sky over a tragic murder/death caused by the BIG BAD. Same set up with adorable kids making a strong supportive connection before the fall out.
TEM had a tragic separation motivated by one of the younger character's desire to protect himself, although in this case, his selfishness crossed over into betrayal rather than cowardice.
So while brutal rape is a new angle, soaking the audience in PAIN is how it goes in melo land.
Could they show us a lot less lingering tearful scenes, please? Like you said, I check out and start thinking about errands I have to run.
It was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse in TEM, where I think the director actually had a timer. No lingering shots of people not talking to each other could be under 10 seconds. It was excruciating to watch. (That's when I learned the trick of reading the subtitles on the side of Dramafever, rather than watching the show.)
So much depends upon how MY continues as the guilty friend. I think we saw a fully realized Jung-woo at the end of this episode.
YEH, on the other hand, is playing a SY who is still being formed by her reaction to the trauma. How will that be played? Weepy and wounded or angry and revenge-filled?
Loved Joon-ah, coming out strong for SY at the end. If these two grow up together, I don't see how Joon-ah won't be absolutely heartbroken if she chooses JW later.
My love for YSH nudging my love for his character already.
I haven't watched any of the long trailers to avoid spoilers, but something tells me there's no way to avoid weepy. *sigh*

Kudos to the writer of IMY for being brave enough to incorporate a controversial rape scene into Kdramaland.
In Asian societies, sexually abused victims are usually shunned and ostracised and many don't live normally. It is from this drama's tackling of the rape issue that I am really invested in watching IMY as I always skip melos like plagues.
I want to know how SY cope from her traumatic experiences and if she will lead a normal live and learn to love the man who left her instead of saving her. It can be an educational tool to rape victims too.
However, I am estatic that DB will stop recapping BECAUSE once the adult actors/actresses appear. there will be more trolling by certain regular & persistant trollers here over their acting and even physical appearances etc. I am new to DB and I can easily tell that a few prominent & regular contributors here think they OWN this blog and tried to IMPOSE their opinions onto others in every drama.
For those who are still watching this gem of a drama, I suggest you log into Soompi's Forum page for IMY as the discussion there is more amiable and decent! There is even live recapping if you are watching it thru live streaming.
For those who love this drama

Wow! Glanced through the comments and so much, uh, passion.
My two cents worth: Totally get why DB is stopping the recaps. I, for one, have always agreed with their opinions on dramas and this time, it's no different.
This show has slathered on the melo so much that I find myself desensitized to it and playing Anipang on my iPhone while the cryfest is going on. Surely the violin in the background is a tad too much, no?
It's hard to feel any anticipation about the search for LSY when we already know there's an adult version of her so I feel that the director/writer are just milking the melo and I feel horribly emotionally manipulated.
Don't get me wrong, I probably will stick around and watch what else happens since the drama is beautifully shot, but I'm going in eyes wide open and not allow myself to be twisted and wrung till I'm out of tears.

Thanks DB for recapping the show for us.
Just reading your recap already makes me a tear jerker. I can feel your pain to have to watch it and spend hours recapping it. Must be tiring.
But since you've taken the worst, I guess I can bravely watch the next episode. It couldn't be worse than now, right?
Sometimes a good written melo can bring us to be more humane. We can reflect and think over what we can't accept and do to others.
My concern is this drama will discuss how the characters overcome their life scars, instead of talking about machination after machination. I'll give the drama 2 episodes more to show its worth.

i dont know why others feel the need to worry about the preview where jung woo was lying with a blood on his head.i think the writer's approach in IMY is unconventional.so to to show that the main lead in the drama will end up dead is unlikely in my opinion.it could be a dream sequence, since hjw is feeling so much guilt about leaving LSY in that old warehouse.at this very early stage of the drama why would the writer give us a glimpse of a bad ending, so that we will not be surprised if it happens? that is so predictable. im loving this drama and to speculate about what will happen will just spoil our enjoyment.i think when YEH said that this drama comfort her, its a positive sign that this drama is not just about doom and gloom.i know that this is not everyones cup of tea but calling someone sadistic for liking this drama, i am offended.because this is the first melodrama that i liked.im a big fan of romcoms and i just watched this because of YEH.but im starting to like it and even applause the writer for her guts in including sensitive issues in this drama that no one ever dared in kdrama world. i dont hate mystitish for her view on this drama.im just offended by the term she used.we have different views about a certain drama but let us not call them names just because we dont share the same opinion.respect begets respect.respect our opinion and we will respect yours.at the end of the day no one can influence me not to watch this.everyone can hate this drama but im not the type of person who is easily swayed , i check it out first before i make a judgement.so recap or no recap is fine by me.its better watchingbit first hand.so far i havent seen anything that i cant tolerate to watch.it not.like watching a SAW movie. what makes people go away fromt his drama is just the fact that its a tearjerker.what can u expect, its a MELODRAMA. it is way way mellow compared to western movies ,that im sure.

IMY is such a good drama to pass.with dream casts, reputable writer and director, and amazing cinematography.that alone is enough to check it out.i was hesitant at first knowing that IMY is a Tragic melodrama, but because of my love for YEH i gave it a shot and true enough at episode 3 i was stunned by that controversial scene. i find it really brave of the writer to go on with the rape thing knowing it could raise controversy for the drama .i felt afraid for the casts because i knew that koreans are still not ready for this but then again i realized that beforehand the casts already knew about it and went on with it maybe because they knew that the whole story is simply worth the risk.these are big actors in korea , YEH partcularly is not after the ratings but more on wanting to improve as an actress by choosing more challenging roles and ut seems that it is what this drama offers.and she mentioned that when she rwad the script she was comforted.so there is something to look forward to not just doom and gloom.Im a romcom addict but i really love this drama because of the story itself.it doesnt promise us rainbows and unicorns as other may call it, but it offers a whole lot more. the story is solid and believable because these things really happen in real life unlike amnesia which is an oversued scenario.i hate to say this but NG as said by many is the best melo of the year, is quite unbelievable and very unlikeky to happen to anyone.too good to be true.but missing you, a poor girl being raped happens a lot wether we accept it or not.a drama is not just made to entertain but to create awareness and mirror ones sentiments.romcoms are made to entertain but dramas dont.it inspires and gives hope to people.so by liking missing you, doesnt make me a sadistic person.i just chose to watch something that i can relate to being a victim of violence and sexual assault myself.thats why i was offended being tagged as Sadistic for simply liking IMY.i respect people who share their dislike about a certain drama but i dont appreciate being called something i am not just because i dont share the same opinion.

@buddhs,
WOW! you really give it all. You've echoed my thoughts exactly! This drama really depicts the harsh realities in real life and inspires and gives hope to people who were victims of violence in any way. I admire your courage to admit that you you were a victim and judging from the way you write, I know that you have recovered and are trying to open the eyes those wearing rose tinted glasses.
I just want to highlight to you that there are some very regular, vocal & domineering contributors here who like to impose their opinions onto others. Although I am new here, I am sharp enough to notice them alright!

But of course there's two sides of a coin, but it's the same coin. The same as hatred is not the opposite of love,it's indifference. What i'm saying is,if there are lots of different reactions or debates about something,it means it's something worth it.What everyone is raving about at the moment is not that the drama is not good as a whole but rather the pain is too much even if it's for building a character or a story.I,for one, likes pain.It makes me feel human. It's just that if it continues to be too much pain after pain and tears after tears to the next episodes then it gets boring. They could jump up to when they are adults, what kind of person they are as adults and justify and explain it then as to why w/ flashbacks of the past.Like in LOST???Oh well...I'll watch it when they get to be adults and then see if i have to go back for these episodes.

This drama is intense and like every drama ever created, whether it be melo, rom-com, etc etc it's made with the intention of touch its audience, to draw a reaction from them. Which it has done successfully, based off of the comments that I'm seeing. It's only ep 4. The young actors have done a fantastic job portraying a back story that's believable and solid. Now we can follow the character's journey back to each other.
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what it's got.
