Yoo Seung-ho’s poster shoot for I Miss You

Well, it’s settled. I already have second lead syndrome, and I’m doomed to cry a river while watching Yoo Seung-ho not get the girl in I Miss You. On the upside, at least it’s a melodrama and EVERYONE will be crying? I know, it’s a very small upside. Here’s our first look at I Miss You’s villain, half-brother to Yoochun and pining Other Guy to Yoon Eun-hye, in his poster shoot for the show.

How do we know he’s evil, you ask? Why the cane, of course. I actually have no idea why he’s got one, other than it makes him seem like an evil mastermind. All the great ones have canes, you know. Yoo Seung-ho will be playing Kang Hyung-joon, the hero’s half-brother, who’s got a dark side because he’s hellbent on revenge for something that dates back to their parents’ generation. Lemme guess… you guys share a crap father? I know, why’s it always gotta be the dad? But statistically, the odds in dramaland are not in a papa’s favor.

He’ll be meddling in the first-love-reunited marathon game of hide-and-seek between Yoochun and Yoon Eun-hye, and even though I know he’ll be evil and meddlesome, I’m powerless to stop the melting. How’s a 19-year old have eyes that soulful anyway? It boggles the mind. While I had a blast watching him play a cheeky god in Arang and the Magistrate, I’m pretty excited for a dark and complex role for him. This production hasn’t been without its hurdles, but I’m hoping for good things come next week.

I Miss You premieres Wednesday November 7 on MBC.

still... he looks to me like a young man playing oldie in that long coat n' cane shot. that getup better fits an ahjussi. or a grandpa. but that's thru my eyes.

and that cane... is it one of those cane-swords? I fear for Yoochun - safety-wise. Screen presence-wise too. I mean, I love Yoochun and I like his acting, but opposite Yoo Seung-ho?

Yoo Seung-ho is the kind of anti-hero who I envision to be pitted against the likes of Kim So Hyun. But that would be like having the cake and eat it too.

Still, I'm excited to see the drama. :)

I loved the novel and the movie (Dorian Gray) with Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. These pictures of Yoo Seung-ho instantly reminds me of Dorian, even the one with the cane which was an important accessory for the gentlemen in those days. Mmmmm gentlemen with canes, Mr Darcy, Mr Bingley, Mr Knightley etc comes to mind.

Anyway, this photographer is like a good director and leave it to Yoo Seung-ho to give us a summary of his character with his beautiful expressive face.

I'm honestly curious; how do noonas find Yoo Seung Ho hot? I'm only like a year older than him but all I can see is an adorable puppy. I love being a pedo noona (Daehyun and Kai are mine y'all), but I find myself having only (oddly enough) pure feelings for him, lol. What is it that everyone else sees in him that I can't? Is there a particular project of his that shows a more sexy side to him? I'm not sure that I can seriously consider him as a possible romantic partner for Yoon Eun Hye in this drama. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

OMG, you're hilarious! Anyone younger than CSW is a puppy? So... CSW is a line - cross this CSW line and you're a pup? And yeah... I'll have to agree with you, I don't see Dr. Evil there with the cane thing. Although - upon reflection - I have to say that YSH can probably pull off a twisted evil villian that'll give you goosebumps (simply because he's so adorable that playing an evil villian well will completely horrify us) or a hilarious Dr. Evil (I mean... just LOOK at that face playing Dr. Evil in a Korean Austin Powers spin-off). I'll die laughing...

Ahhh, I remember 'Operation Proposal.' It's where a male lead was doing exactly the same thing as a typical second female lead. Except instead of the usual "She is such a clingy, obsessive bitch and can't take no for an answer", the opposite happened and many viewers seems to somehow support him.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think the difference is that the typical second female lead is the one in love but the object of her affections isn't in love with her - so you can't really root for a one-sided love. In Operation Proposal, the guy and girl were clearly in love with each other, though timing, etc. caused them not to be together and she went with the other guy she didn't love - people would more likely root for two-sided love.

0

@la dee dah 10.1.2.1.1

I'm 100% with you on rooting for two-sided love.
(if both side knows the other person also share same feeling)

Here's my problem with Operation Proposal, We the viewers were shown that she also love him (male lead did not witness what we witness),
but looking from the male lead perspective, at most female lead was a VERY wishy washy character. Basically She kept saying NO and each time she says NO, he goes back in time to try to change her mind WITHOUT any regards to her choice she made.

At the end they did get each other, but was it really HER CHOICE. I mean, even if you didn't love a particular person and rejected him, if that person kept going back in time over and and over and over again, your mind might be eventually changed. But I ask again, was it really your choice that your mind changed?

0

I didn't watch Operation Proposal, but my friends and I watched the original version (Proposal Daisakusen). The result was divided in two: all of my girl friends hate it, while all of my boy friends deeply madly love it, it almost turn into a cult. Sigh.
It seems the korean version gains a lot more female viewers than I thought.

0

@nomu nomu nomu

Oh, I understand your frustration, I felt very sorry for the second male lead because he was innocent in all this and he was the one that got hurt the most from the indecisiveness of the male and female leads. You were noting why viewers were mostly on his side as opposed to typical second female leads, and I just gave my opinion why I think viewers were rooting for the main male lead in this case (i.e., the viewers knew the girl loved him back).

SoMaeny- I just think he's not your cup of tea, and that is okay. I'm like that about several actors that other Beaners swoon over, and I'm like I don't get it, yawn, lol. I'll refrain from listing them so as not to induce anyone to want to stab me or try to convince me of someones hotness haha.

But as for age thing- I have friends of all ages from early 20's to mid 60's. I think older women are now becoming more okay with saying that a younger man is appealing. It's not as taboo as it used to be no matter how squicked some young women seem to get about seeing older women admire younger men. My friends in their 20's have no problem appreciating a man old enough to be their father, and the appreciation is definitely sexual, and that is supposed to be okay.

This one, I think he is attractive and I definitely see noona killer in him, he's got the ability to put a little mischief and heat behind his eyes. Plus he just projects an old soul. He's not quite my cup of tea but I appreciate his charisma. I personally would love to see YEH do a romantic scene with him. Then again I'd love to see YEH do a romantic scene with anyone, cause she can bring it and it will be entertaining.

Agree with this. It's all personal preference for everyone who they think is hot or not or just simply cute without the hot. I love Yoo Seung Ho, but I don't really find him hot (not in the same sense that I find, say... Lee Min Ho hot). But there's a factor in Yoo Seung Ho that is extremely attractive to me and I think it has to do with his acting chops; mostly his eyes and how emotive they can get because I have a thing for eyes on a man who can emote like none other (a la Lee Min Ho :P). To me, Yoo Seung Ho in pictures or younger roles is simply a cute little boy. But whenever he displays those emotive eyes... well, I'm a goner for that one. Example: In Arang and the Magistrate, I found him delightful and amusing rather than hot (oh, and pretty). I totally see noona killer in him as well.

Fun Fact (well, for me): When I first started watching Korean drama about a year ago, there weren't too many male idols, actors, etc. whom I found good looking right away. They all eventually grew on me (even Lee Min Hot). Cultural shock, maybe? But Yoo Seung Ho was the very first Korean male actor whom I took only one glance at and said "Oh, he's cute" out loud. And then after him, the barrier crumbled and I start finding more and more young K-idols and actors cute or good looking upon first glance (though none of them have the same impacted punch as when I first saw Yoo Seung Ho... except for maybe Xiah Junsu, although with him I didn't really say anything and I just stared with O.O eyes and had no idea why I was so attracted to him, just that I was). So anyway, Yoo Seung Ho kind of has a special place in my heart.

BINGO. This is exactly it for me too, he doesn't do it for me like some others do, but I can completely get why DB is so nuts for him.

0

anicheung-I started with movies. Won Bin was my first, Hey, wake up stupid, and check out the hot Korean celebs lol. Lee Dong-Wook in The Perfect Couple made me go, oh hello? But I think Lee Min Ho was my first take my breath away guy. I have an eye thing too with people in generally which may be why I maybe the only person in the world that can stand Kim Hyun Joong's acting, because I watch his eyes, which to me say a lot. Kim Bum was the first cutie that made me think I might go to hell. Bi Rain was truly the first that really really, um, shall we say I am truly grateful he likes to objectify himself and take his clothes off, yeah, I'll stop there. Lee Min Ho still just plain takes my breath away and I really enjoy watching him act except I wanted to feed him and take him to the gym to bulk him up lol. I think I'll stop here with my list of firsts haha.

0

I def would not be head over heels for Yoo Seung Ho if he wasn't a superb actor. It's the acting chops that get me. That got to me even when he was younger though it wasn't until he turned 18 or so that I moved from a more platonic interest in him.

I mean, in my opinion he's also very physically attractive in a pretty boy way but so are many young stars. Somehow he's literally the only male actor/singer/entertainer for whom I've ever felt the desire to ignore his clear young age with and just adore him.

It does not help that he persistently plays characters older than he is in real life and incidentally far more age appropriate for me. (A deliberate choice he's made given his previous interviews.)

0

I don't find YSH hot in the traditional sense, but I can see the appeal - he's got a certain charm to him that can translate very well to noona-killer, and he's a really good actor.

Despite that, my main urges when I see him are to pinch his cheeks and coo - maybe that will change as he gets older (that first pic is doing a good job of making him look more mature) but I can kind of see why everyone else is nuts for him.

The biggest impact of kdrama are:

- increase number of super/moderate pedo noonas
- increase number of jail occupancy rate (consists of happy pedo noonas)
- increase number of pet lovers
- increase number of sleep deprived pedo noonas (eye bags be d@mned)
.... and the list continues.

Yep, I'm going through anticipatory second lead syndrome as well. Lee Se-young will be YSH love interest,

but, K-drama laws states that ALL second male lead must moon and angst over the heroine for at least awhile before giving up and finally moving on.

With Se-young being written as the love interest of YSH, maybe the amount of time mooning and angsting over the heroine will be drastically reduced for him (one can hope, anyways)

As a long time viewer of Kdramas...I've been required to suspend-belief ....er.... reality... during some of the most ridiculous, insane, inane, craptastic moments of storytelling......and I've almost always still managed to enjoy the show. (based on knowing that I just have to let A LOT of stuff Go ~)

So ~ ~ ~ for this show.....I'm going to completely and utterly IGNORE that the second lead is barely out of puberty and is nearly a decade younger than me. (SCANDALOUS!!!)....I'm going to fall in love with him anyway.

His smouldering eyes and man-body will convince me that it's OK to fan-girl -- because he is in fact, an immortal Jade Emperor on the inside. (Yes, Yes, ...that's it -- he's millenia OLDER than me...on the inside)

That's my story and I'm sticking with it. ;)

Omg, he's in so much pain. Look at all that rain. He needs that cane to support the weight of his tainted innocence and crushed dreams.

He seems older than what he is. It's hard to believe he's just shy of being six months older than my elder daughter. I can't imagine her carrying the weight of the type of roles he's played.

sometimes young actors deliver terrifyingly mature performances despite still being teenagers.

I am amazed by YSH's ability, but then I remember Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation, she was 17 years old and playing someone several years older having a bit of an emotional crisis. It's always stunning when someone that young pulls off a role that requires them to act older.
