Weekend ratings battle: Seo-young breaks 30%
by girlfriday
Looks like KBS has another runaway hit on their hands. Following the departure of the beloved You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly, new weekend family drama My Daughter Seo-young broke the 30% mark in just four weeks. It’s not unheard of to rise that quickly (in fact the Kim Nam-joo drama was a week faster to hit those numbers), but in any case, it’s well on its way to becoming a “national drama” at breakneck speed.
My Daughter Seo-young stars Lee Bo-young as the titular daughter Seo-young and highlights a father-daughter relationship at its core, featuring a loveline with Lee Sang-yoon. It solidified a lead from the outset, premiering in the high teens and holding in the twenties for while, and then Sunday’s broadcast recorded 31.5% for Episode 8.
My Love, Madame Butterfly premiered this weekend on SBS and had a fairly good showing, given that it went up against such an established leader. It premiered at 10.2% and then Episode 2 dropped to 9.2%. And MBC’s Rascal Sons brought in the rear with 8.1%. So basically, there’s not a whole lot of wiggle room between second and third place, since these two dramas are splitting what remains after Seo-young sweeps the lion’s share.
I checked out Butterfly’s premiere and thought it breezed by at a surprisingly rapid pace — basically it covers all the ground teased in the premise in its first episode, so there’s zero wait to get to plot you already know is coming. Yeom Jung-ah is hilarious as the flighty starlet, but it made me wish she were starring as this character in a miniseries, because I didn’t care when she wasn’t onscreen, and the episode count is too steep for that.
In the later time slot, MBC’s May Queen is holding the drama lead, but struggling to cross 20% because it also airs against the ratings leader Gag Concert. The comedy sketch show leads the slot at 21%, while May Queen has been climbing to the high teens. Sunday’s broadcast recorded 17.4%, and given that it has a lot of time (one upside to large episode count), it’ll likely reach its 20%-range goal. The Great King’s Dream and Five Fingers are doing the same, splitting second and third place with a narrow margin. King is faring slightly better at 11-13%, while Fingers brings in the rear at 8-10%.
My jaw always drops at weekend numbers because they’re so large when compared to the weekday primetime battles (featuring numbers that look a lot like the losers in the weekend race), but it’s just the nature of the beast. You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly topped out at 45.3%, and Seo-young looks like it’s about to follow suit.

Can anybody tell me how good was You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly? Was it makjang? I fear makjang...
And My Daughter Seo-Young sounds cute.

It was a pretty hilarious drama. There's not THAT much makjang (otherwise, i would NOT have watched it. I fear/despise makjang as well). Rather, it made fun of makjangs or tried to stray from it.
It's probably my favorite weekend drama to date. :) you should definitely check it out. I kinda watched it from the 20th episode or so while my parents started from the 2nd episode and since they can't stand makjang either and finished the drama, i know they really REALLY enjoyed it. XD
the cameos were fun to watch too. Kim Seung Woo, Ji Jin Hee, Cha Tae Hyun & more! :)

It's nowhere near makjang! It's one of the best family dramas I've ever seen. So heartwarming and laugh out loud funny. There are in-law hijinks, sisterly dynamics, and numerous engaging couples. I have my favorites, of course (tomboy and high maintenance boss!), but everyone had interesting storylines. I wish there was an award for best ensemble cast like in the Emmys. These group of actors totally deserve something like that. It's long (50+ episodes) but you'll soon be glad it's that long because you'll feel like you can't get enough of these people.

I think everyone said it already but I'll repeat that it's not makjang and it was a really good solid drama. Well written and acted. I still prefer ojakgyo family/brothers to this though

definitely not makjang. it's a family drama, slash romantic comedy. it was light and funny, heartwarming and touching in all the right spots. also a bit of mystery, but done WITHOUT the makjang-ness. i found it surprisingly quality for a weekend drama, and then i found out it was penned by the same writer who wrote queen of housewives and queen of reversals (correct me if i'm wrong on this). without giving the storyline away, i highly recommend. try the first 2 episodes!
the first 10 were my favorite. you saw some really splendid, heartwrenching acting from veteran actors jang yong and yoon yeo-jung. i sobbed my eyes out, but in a good way.

My Daughter Seo Young isn't a cute drama. It's kind of an angsty drama about the broken relationship between a father and his daughter. It's pretty good, though.
If you want to watch a cute drama, You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly fits the bill purrrfectly.

hmm... maybe i'll watch Seo-young. I've only watched Rascal Sons so far(for Seo In Guk, of course!) and it's kinda sad it has low ratings. Hm... maybe i'll wait for Seo-young to end, and then marathon it.. haha thats going to take a while.

MDRY I think I watched the last few episodes raw.It was really good acting and story and pace.I knew what it was roughly before I went in.But it's just not my style, not for so many episodes. My favourite was the tomboy and boss couple.Seriously not into that whiny sister.
Now however wondering if I should start a new series with the ratings winner. It's too hard to follow a long series late.

I hardly get to watch weekend dramas because they are either sageuks with 80+++++ episodes or melo dramas which I can not stand.
I just realized that "The Great Seer" is debuting this Wednesday and Arang still have 4 more episodes to go. Two fusion sageuks sharing the same time slot, Oh noooooes not good for either one. Rooting for Arang, hope it'll maintain its current ratings.

Thank you for the update, gf. MDSY is pretty good; so far I only watched the first 2 episodes on KBSWorld.
There're many layers that can be peeled in MDSY, but my heart at the moment is still towards Seo Young & her father's relationship. It's truly hurting to see her father's trying to get her love back after everything he's done.
This is the writer who penned Brilliant Legacy (which broke 30% viewership in 7 weeks), 49Days, and Prosecutor Princes. If the plot stays strong, I strongly believe MDSY can be the next national drama.
You who rolled in unexpectedly is one of the best family drama I've ever watched. Every character is flashed out beautifully that we care about everyone. My fav couple are Gwi Nam & Yoon Hee and Jae Yong & Yi Sok.

MAY QUEEN is good. I love the child actors and adore the adult cast. Everyone play well in the drama, even though the story line kinda easy to predict but still, its not decrease the fun while watching it. This drama is soo eye candy. And yes, its makjang, but each episode is still, manage to bring some fun and cute scene so the makjang portion not play a dominant factor in this drama.
Try watch it :-)

Of these, I'm watching Rascal Sons. Sad it's in last place. The main couple is cute and it's not everyday you see a romance involving a single mom portrayed in a wholesome light.

Really? I feel like the single mom story has been done to death. My sister once remarked that South Korea must be full of plucky single moms/divorcees and angst-ridden chaebol heirs if the dramas that have been produced in the last 2-3 years are any indication. I get that drama producers are pandering to an overwhelmingly female audience but I'm curious to see if anything fresh is in the works. Of course, my respect to the adorable Myung Se Bin. I caught a glimpse of her in Rascal Sons and she was awesome as always.

Hmm... which ones? I've seen a few, but they've been full of makjang angst, where love with a single mom is a love that everyone is opposed to. Though it's too early to tell in Rascal Sons, I sense that this will be a much more natural, normal romance.
Also, I like that the leading man is just a really nice, bumbling guy-next-door. He is nothing like the stereotypical cold, arrogant romantic lead. It makes me happy to watch the pair together.

Single mom/divorcee stories? Basically every other drama has some variation of this storyline and there are too many to count... I'm including daily dramas (aka ajhumma central lol) and weekend dramas even though it's not too common in trendy weekday dramas. I frankly don't see the appeal of watching the same story over and over again; I get it, men are bad and have to prove that they're worthy of love whereas women are good and deserve to be loved. Which is paraphrasing, of course. What I liked about Rascal Sons is that the male lead also has a daughter and they seem to be the kind of couple that you'd actually find in real life.

i seriously enjoyed butterfly. i hated yeom jung-ah (or her character) in royal family, to the point where i was actively rooting for her in-laws. but agreed, she was convincingly hilarious here. i know there were some articles speculating that this could be the drama to replace you who rolled in unexpectedly, and there definitely are some parallels. but i think butterfly is a bit more serious in tone.
and as much as i like kim nam-joo (love checking out her clothes!), yeom is the better comedic actress/actress overall. KNJ puts a lot of passion into her performances, so you're convinced by her, but yeom had me cracking up hard at least three or four times already. this is definitely something i'm going to be watching. i agree, the thought that this should have been a miniseries did cross my mind, but hey, if they're able to take the fun and comedy all the way to episode 50, why not?
i also checked out seo-young when it aired, but dropped it quickly. i'm watching rascal sons because it has several actors i like, but it's proving rather dull. the pace needs to pick up, and a lot of the incidents seem too contrived. i won't even go into myung se-bin. i love ryu soo-young, hence why i'm continuing to watch, but still overall not living up to my expectations. neither is seo in-guk, sadly.

You Who Rolled in Unexpectedly was surprisingly a really really good watch! I started out at episode 4 and fell in love with it instantly. There were many heart-breaking scenes that you really cant hold in your tears :') Especially about the part on Child Abandoning/Adoption, it's just simply meaningful! And I do agree that it was written so captivatingly that we as viewers care about all the characters that were laid out to us. I particularly adore the love story and angst between Jae Yong and Yi Sok, twas totally adorable! (im pretty sure they deserve a Best Couple Award)
This isnt really your regular weekend drama too, with all the subtle humour and frequent cameos, it's a must-watch :')

There's really nothing to be surprised about weekend drama ratings. Actually, weekday and weekend dramas get roughly the same ratings. For example, last week, the highest rated episode of "I'll Give You the Stars and Moon," a daily drama, got 26.9% ratings, which is comparable to last week's highest rated episode of "My Daughter Seoyoung," which got 28.9% ratings. Likewise, last week's highest rated episode of Nice Guy got 16.2% ratings, which is comparable to last week's highest rated episode of May Queen, which got 17.5% ratings. Not much of a difference. Time slots and competition are big factors in the ratings game, and KBS hit the jackpot with the 8pm weekend time slot. On the other hand, it's pretty much an uber fierce ratings battle for weekday prime time dramas. If you wonder how expensive prime time dramas make broadcasting stations any profit, it's through exports, licensing, etc. One hit prime time drama can fund the investment of like five prime time dramas.
I googled the top 10 drama ratings of the week, and 7 out of 10 dramas were WEEKDAY dramas: I'll Give You the Stars and Moon, Nice Guy, Only You, Arang, Love My Love, Oolala Spouses, An Angel's Choice.
