Lee Seung-gi and Suzy cast in fantasy sageuk

Well you know I’m a happy camper if puppy’s back in dramaland. Lee Seung-gi (The King 2 Hearts) and Suzy (Big) have been cast in a new drama, a fantasy sageuk called Gu Family Book. That’s a rough estimate on the title, since we have no hanja to go on yet, but the Gu refers to gumiho, a mythical nine-tailed fox, almost always in mythology a woman. But this time, Seung-gi will be playing a half-gumiho / half-human. Seung-gi, isn’t going from gumiho’s boyfriend to gumiho-boy kinda retreading old ground?
It’s at least a sageuk, which means it’ll be completely different from the modern rom-com My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. I’ll just think of him as Miho and Dae-woong’s baby. The drama will be helmed by PD Shin Woo-chul, of Secret Garden, A Gentleman’s Dignity and writer Kang Eun-kyung of Baker King, Man of Honor, Dalja’s Spring.
Suzy is still “considering the role favorably.” There’s not much information on her character yet, just that she’s up for the heroine. Seung-gi has reportedly been attached to the project from the start, and has confirmed the lead role. All we know is that he’ll be playing a half-man-half-beast, in his first historical drama to date. I… cannot picture him with a mane of glory. Does not compute. In danger of fire hazard. You know I love the boy, but sometimes hair is his enemy. Can he be a half-gumiho who hides his true identity while living as a nobleman? ‘Cause pretty topknot with hat and hanbok sounds right up his alley.
I think it’s an adorable pairing, and while Suzy does leave some emoting to be desired, she’s better with every role, and I honestly just like her in everything. I dunno… she’s just plain likable. It probably helps that she’s played some funny characters, because comedy is her stronger suit. I hope there’s some funny to be had in this new show, because that’s my favorite mode for both these actors.
The series is aiming for an early 2013 broadcast, and is currently in talks with MBC for a time slot.

Suzy is adorable in general and I've liked her roles to date - she's not a great actress but she's certainly serviceable at worst and she's HILARIOUS at best. She works with what she has to the benefit of the portrayal and I admire that.
PuppyChona! Always thought he was cute in lighthearted things but he did bring a dramatic depth to K2H that no one expected, and I was so pleased with his performance that now I think he can do anything, if he really wants to.
All in all, I have high hopes for this pairing...although it does seem odd to think of them in a historical setting.

I also love Suzy.
I think her deliberate way of speaking modern Korean will help with sageuk.
At first I though, no problem for LSG and her; both are singers. They have to learn to enunciate and have good breath control.
Then I remembered, while Micky could do it, JJ couldn't get the cadence right. JJ speaks the same way he sings - he takes a noticeable breath, then lets all the words out like air from a balloon.
I agree that it does seem strange to think of them in up dos and gats and hanboks. If the characters are less than formal, the actor can get away with less than formal speech. I am loving LMH's sortuv sageuk.
Is there any way LSG would have a Mane of Glory?

This drama sounds like it would be great if it was a bubbly, light hearted romantic comedy. Both of the leads have that sort of aura IMO. But the writer likes to write makjang feasts?? ::shudders:: I'm interested to see how they want to play this one out. Comedy-I'm in. Makjang-I'm as far away as I can get. :(
(unless Noh Min Woo gets in as a second lead, then I'm in no matter what! lol)

Brilliant Legacy and MGIAG were true hits but K2H was not, at least in terms of ratings. Don't get me wrong, LSG is not a bad actor by any means, but I don't think he's the best either. Hopefully this pairing works out because I admit that they'd look adorable together.

It was also a hit in terms if being critically reviewed. Also at the time it was airing against two other strong dramas with plots that were proffered by older audiences. As regards said, it performed the best in terms of streaming ratings which takes into account much more viewers than the standard sample size.
In other words, it was most definitely a hit.

TK2H was definitely a hit for me. Great acting, great plot, great directing... It's one of the best, if not the best drama, of this year.

LSG has improved by leaps and bounds inTK2H. I wasn't a fan of his acting before TK2H. But after watching TK2H, I was totally a fan of his. I even went to his fan meet when he came to Singapore. For those who think that he is not good looking, you have to see him in person. He is gorgeous! Totally natural and his smile can light up a city!

Wow, Suzy as the lead. That's .... big. (Sigh, no pun intended.) It's just, she's only done Dream High and Big. The former, I thought she did decently, but was judged earlier for being the Suzy-Bot. The latter was a super cute role, but depended more on her pretty, her bubbly than well, anything else. Introduction to Architecture I personally didn't find anything compared to expectations, and it was a nice role sure, but ..... She hasn't really stretched her wings in anything so far that needed as much /acting skill/.
I say this just because she hasn't had much under her belt, so I would've preferred it if she had a couple of more supporting roles beforehand. There's so many great actresses out there.
Everything in general sounds great though. (Anything written by Dal Ja's Spring's writer is a+ for me tbh.)

We have no clue as to how big her role is yet. It's possible that the story isn't focused on the romance aspect or the pairing. If the story is focused more on LSG's character, Suzy's role might turn out not to be as big as say...Ha Ji Won's was in The King 2 Hearts.

Notice how no one says anything when the guy is older, lol. I don't think the age gap here is a big deal though and the fact that it's set in sageuk times makes the age gap much, much more plausible.

I will watch anything as long as LSGi is acting in it. I miss him terribly since he quit the two variety shows and since TH2H ended. To those who don't find him good looking, it's ok. I felt that way too when my friend was crazy over him and I thought she needed to have her eyes checked.His looks has grown on me and it is now a point of no return. I am totally and completely addicted to him. Seung Gi and new drama fighting !

I think it's just that his looks are not the conventional definition of good-looking when compared to other Korean celebrities. But more than anything, LSG's attraction is his charm and personality. ;)

I agree Suzy is just likable which frankly annoys me at times as she just turned 18 earlier this month and I'm 9 years older and she's so pretty, I wish she would hide away for the next 5-6 years instead of being freaking everywhere, but enough of my off topic rant.
On to mt main point which is I never understood why people didn't like Suzy in Dream High I thought she did Hye Mi perfectly, as I think based on her living situation if Hye Mi was a real person she would be robotic like and have trouble with emotions slowly getting better as she falls in love, just like Suzy portrayed.

I don't have a problem with Suzy either, but I think the problem is that she is 18 years old. I hope that her character is supposed to be one that is near 18. It would be strange if she started acting really womanly beyond her years. I like the cute suzy and fear that if the focus of the drama is anything beyond an innocent love, this may be a challenge for the "neitzens" too. The only other actress that I know that acted well beyond her years is Scarlett Johansson, did you know she is only 27 today?
LSG proved in K2H that he was a full fledged adult male. So I would assume if they were to cast suzy, he would become the cute puppy again. As much as I would find that less interesting, I would feel more comfortable for suzy. But who knows the the power of the storyline may still hook me in.

Both..firsttime in sageuk..Histirical drama..And I want to watch both of them wearing robes especially Suzy i cab imagine she we look damn gorgeous..And want to see how this chemistry workout with them.So yes;for this pairing.And half-beast-half-human..like..No Min Ho played in My Girlfren is a Gumiho...he was really hot..lets see hiw it play. ut in the historical drama...*woot*:-):-)

I like Suzy too. It helps that Dream High is one of my favorite dramas ever. And yes to anything LSK! They are both cute and funny -- I see potential chemistry already.
And it will be really interesting to see a male gumiho, considering they're always female in the mythology (aren't they?)

Not a fan of Suzy, so I'm kind of hoping she'll turn down the role, but as long as Seung-gi's in the project, I'm going to watch it.:)
This must be a consolation prize since I'm still sad about Arang and the Magistrate's ending. In any case, Seung-gi can never be back in dramaland soon enough.

The difference between Seunggi and Suzy is that...
This is Seunggi's 8th year since his debut. before doing a lead role, he only did support characters for a weekend drama, and for sitcoms. He worked his way up from support roles of sitcoms, to a weekend drama, then as a lead to a weekend drama then he went to a primetime drama.
And then we get Suzy who gets a major role in a primetime drama just like that.
And somehow, these two end up in the same position, despite Seunggi having worked his way up and being the much better actor of the two.
If people here who are fans think that by instantly getting lead roles because of your popularity is the only way to "gain experience", think again. Other actors go to university and study theatre, they volunteer and accept low-paying jobs in broadway, and they spend a lot of time practicing.
Meanwhile we get this kid who spent years training to sing and dance pop songs, then only get some months of training in acting, get the big bucks and literally earn experience through starring in major bigtime projects.
On top of that, her acting is worse than a 1st year drama university student. Please tell me how twisted that is.

To be fair, wasn't Seunggi also trained to primarily be a singer? It's still his main profession, no matter how well he's done in other areas of showbiz. Seunggi doing bit roles here and there was how things were done years ago. See any other idols/singers his age and debuted the same time as him and they also had those little acting gigs here and there. Yoochun, Siwon, Heechul, Kibum, etc.
Besides, Suzy had idol training, meaning she did have some form of acting training too, unlike Seunggi who isn't really an idol and started out just standing on stage and singing.

I'm definitely on board with this drama. I trust LSG's decisions....all his dramas have been hits so far... this one shud be no different.

I'm trusting him to choose a good plot. None of his shows have disappointed me so far because I was so drawn into the story. Already the plot sounds un-clichéd and as long as they can be original and not fall back on what is typical and overdone go death, I'll be happy.

Regarding the writer - remember how some people were concerned about the writers of TK2H, as they were not THE Hong sisters but the OTHER Hong sisters? Ironically, THE Hong sisters drama, Big, didn't turn out as well as TK2H.
Some were even worried about the producer, cos he produced Beethoven Virus. But he did a pretty job in the end.
And of course, there were the skeptics about SG not being able to pull through the role of King Jaeha and his chemistry with HJW.
BUT, I am pretty concerned about Suzy, as its her first lead role and she has very little experience, compared to SG before he took on TK2H. And she's very young.

Yes, I agree. I mentioned it in the previous page that I hope this writer will surprise me like TK2H writer did. This year has shown me multiple times that having great writer and director on board doesn't promise a great drama and vice versa. People have their ups and downs, so I should not overestimate nor underestimate anyone.
Therefore, my well wishes that this drama will do well. Really really looking forward to more news on this!

Thank you for the update! Looking forward to a fantasy drama. The set up reminds me of my favorite anime Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan (from the manga Nurarihyon no Mago). The kid is 1/4 yokai and his father was 1/2 yokai.
Liked Seunggi in his previous roles and I also like Suzy = but can't imagine them together.
As long as the story is interesting, I'm watching!

I agree with u,girlfriday. Suzy is just plain likeable.No matter what roles she played. That's probably explain why she has the most haters too,they just don't get it why she is loved by everyone when her acting is not that great. I think she's very lucky girl.She is lucky in picking her projects. In terms of popularity,they both really compatible. This is a dream pair. Nation's golden boy and Nation's first love icon.
However,I'm still not on board.I heard not a good thing about the writer so i'm afraid.I'm like 40% on board so i'm gonna wait for more news. I hope Suzy picks this project. Not much a fan of sageuk too. Not to mention this is their first sageuk drama.But this pairing will be so adorable.I can just feel it.I'm not afraid of the age gap.Somehow Suzy always get paired with guys who way older than her. Kim Soohyun is 6 years older,Lee Jaehoon is 10 years older and Gong Yoo 14-15 years if i'm not mistaken,Lee Seunggi is 7 years..i think it will be fine.Plus,Suzy has a matured looks..lol

It sad when many people against Suzy in this drama casting. maybe I'm the only one, but I actually loveee Suzy. I'm not an Idol follower, nor i like their music and song.
I know Suzy from dream high, and start to liked her from that drama. I know she is still uneven actress.. But i find her very charming. Maybe I like her due to her character who won me over rather than her acting. But even in dream high, he nailed some emotional scene and makes me cry. she also has a funny facial expression.
But I admit, I'm very worried about her since it will a saeguk drama. she still green.

I know alot of views unhappy about main actress. I think hers recieve deny word similar situation of yoona from love rain at past.I hope no more 2nd of action . I think alot of idol hope to try it but not success at all, special girls. Now, i hope she will join it. Full support and ship. I think she should chance for action, become successactress.

This guy, I have some ambivalence about him. I look at him and think, best friend third wheel type, but then I see him act, and he's got this under current of...something that makes you go hmmm, he looks like he got something something going on (a sexual thing), despite the rather odd goofiness. I do not know how other to say it. I cannot see him in the historical gear. I almost think this is a step back for him, after working with experienced and mature actresses like Shin Min a and Ha Ji-won. I agree with another poster, these two are very much a brother and sister casting versus a romantic pairing. Suzy, she's got funny appeal, and if her character is written as a diva with a lot of tude and quirks and totally serious about it all, well, she'll do fine. Suzy, being so young, I'd expecting much in any romantic heat or chemistry in this pairing. We are probably looking at the silly bug eyed young romance interaction in this pairing, and at the best, a little bit of cute or sweet. IDK, this is a maybe on my list, let's see what comes to fruition.

I don't think SG gets to choose who he acts with? Isn't it up to the media station/producer? I mean, in TK2H, HJW first confirmed the role without knowing who her male lead was. SG got to choose the drama cos 4 or 5 other actors turned it down, and he so badly wanted to act with her.
In this drama, its the other way around. SG's confirmed the drama first, while the female lead not confirmed yet. I just feel that they should at least try to get a female lead that is more or less on par with SG, so that the drama will be good.
I agree with u about the romantic part - she's too young to for hot, intimate romance. Sigh! And I wanna see hot, intimate romance!!!!! Suzy, pls reject the role!!!!!

Jung Eun Ji is a year older than Suzy and she has pretty hot romance in Answer Me 1997. I know that its a cable channel but is it not possible for their age on national tv eventhough they play an older character?

Oh man.
Fresh off of Answer me (just finished marathoning it) and i think Eun-Ji would be WONDERFUL.
I think for her debut role she definitely exceeded my expectations..
I feel more at east with her than suzy. Having said that, i still like suzy.

Jade Butterfly - I was surprised to read that she's from a girl group, she's that good! She shows such natural acting. But her and Suzy for me has different charms. Eunji with her Busan accent and she does better in emotional scenes too, while Suzy is just so cute and hilarious during comical scenes.

@Crazyahjummafan- At Seunggi's level , with him being known as 3-in-1 multi-entertainer( successful singer +MC+actor ), I think he has some clout to 'suggest' who he'd prefer, out of the shortlisted actresses. My guesstimation only.

I love Suzy…whatever other may say…she will be paired w/ Lee Seung Gi, well I'm so excited (although their CHEMISTRY is just a brother & little sister relationship)…7 to 8 years age gap..well age doesn't matter Suzy look so matured enough than her age...

Soooo excited that Lee Seung Gi will be back on screen! Who ever the lead actress may be ~ Suzy, Eunji, or who ever lucky girl that may be ~ I'm pretty sure that LSG will bring out the best of her and will make her shine. His the type of person who even memorizes his partner's script just so he can help her out.
