Faith: Episode 22

With just two more episodes to go, our central political conflict finally comes to a head, followed right after by our time-crossed-lovers predicament. You almost wish they could have just one day of peace before the clouds roll in, but then that would make for bad drama. Our heroine faces her most monumental decision yet, which we knew she’d have to confront at some point: return to her time and live, or remain with the man she loves and risk near-certain death?

EPISODE 22 RECAP

Hatty the Assassin comes after Eun-soo in Woodalchi headquarters, but thankfully Dae-man is quick on his feet and alerts everyone of the intruder. Thank goodness ONE of you is paying attention.

Dae-man rushes to protect Eun-soo, and she hurriedly grabs one of the antidote experiments… which she drops in the scuffle. And then it gets stomped on.

With Eun-soo out of reach, Hatty just grabs her surgical tools and leaves. Crap, is this the end of the roomie arrangement, if he knows where to find her?

Meanwhile, Gongmin prepares to go face Deok-heung for his sentencing. He tells the queen that he’s wanted to kill him so many times for what he did to her and to their baby, but no one, not even Young, understands what he’s doing and why.

Noguk: “I do. I understand.” Aw. You can actually see his heart rise up at her words, and he says he might take a while. She just smiles, “I will be waiting.”

Eun-soo huddles in a corner, crying, and Lady Choi gets called over to help. Eun-soo just hugs her and cries into her shoulder on sight, and Aunt stands there dumbfounded. She finally pats her a few times on the back. It’s kind of like watching the Terminator trying to comfort a puppy.

They go back to the room and Eun-soo panics that it’s all destroyed. She sees Aunt pick up Young’s Jeokwoldae bandana from the rubble, and asks if it was what he used to tie around his sword—a memento of his fiancée.

Eun-soo starts to break down in tears as she asks how long Young wasn’t okay after she died. She explains that with the antidote experiments all destroyed, she has to start again, but there isn’t enough time before heaven’s door opens.

And if she stays behind but doesn’t succeed in making an antidote, then she dies. “If it doesn’t work and I die… what will become of him?” Oof, that’s heartbreaking that it’s her first concern.

Aunt asks if she really intends to stay behind. Eun-soo: “Does that make me crazy? It’s crazy. But if I just go like this, I think I’ll really go insane. Every day I’ll be thinking: Is that person okay? Is he really okay? Is he okay?”

Aunt tells her to ask him directly. He’s not one to talk about his feelings so he might be bad at it, “but he will answer if you ask him.”

Sohn Yoo meets with Ki Chul and offers up the official document for Yuan’s support of Deok-heung. He asks Deok-heung what he’ll do as king of Goryeo, and he says he’ll hand the country over to Yuan, give Ki Chul a handsome reward, and offers Sohn Yoo one as well.

The envoy agrees and hands over the document, not because of the offer of riches, but because at least with this guy in power, it means Yuan will have control. Ki Chul asks if he isn’t a Goryeo man, and Sohn Yoo says he was once, “back when I had hope.”

But watching how his country was being run, he has long since given up that hope, and now thinks it better for Yuan to have control. Aw, but maybe Gongmin could’ve turned that disillusioned frown upside-down, envoy man.

He leaves the meeting and furtively takes a look at… a pocket watch? Er? Oh is that the last of Hwata’s things? Or something new??

Gongmin and Young approach their meeting with Deok-heung, and Gongmin says things could get ugly. Did he say goodbye to the doctor? Young says he intends to return to her, so no, he didn’t give any special farewells.

Gongmin sits across the table from Deok-heung and offers up a deal: if he gives up his kinship to the royal family and leaves the country, he will be spared his life. Deok-heung laughs, calling him “Nephew” and says that Yuan has already made him the new king.

They contend that Gongmin is the one being a traitor and conspirator now, and soldiers come rushing in. Gongmin says he’s even prepared his council so that they could both stand before them and allow them to choose their king – do they really need to shed blood?

Deok-heung just laughs and makes his exit, leaving Ki Chul and his troops to handle Gongmin. Young and the Woodalchi fight their way through.

The council hears of the attack, and then Noguk meets with them to convey the king’s request. She gives them the royal seal, and his final decree that if something should happen to him, they are to act in his place.

Young tries to lead the king away, but Gongmin refuses to budge, until his council comes through. It’s understandably frustrating for Young, but the king is finally putting his faith—and his life—in his people’s hands. It’s risky as hell (especially considering how wishy-washy they’ve been before), but hugely significant. I just hope for your sake those scholars woke up feeling decisive today. It’d be a first.

The royal army just sits on pins and needles, desperate to act and help rescue the king, but their hands are tied until the council decides what to do. The council gets word that Yuan has given the throne to Deok-heung, and it throws them into a tizzy: Back Gongmin and start a war? Or throw him to the wolves and serve Deok-heung as king?

The Woodalchi back Gongmin into a room they’ve secured, while Young slices through Ki Chul’s soldiers like a badass.

Suddenly, he looks down. Oh noes. His hand starts to rattle, and he quickly takes his sword in his left hand. Egad, this is getting really bad…

Thankfully he’s still a killing machine with his left hand, but it’s not exactly the best consolation. Dol-bae catches up to him, and then watches from behind, as Young tries to hold his sword with his right hand. It crashes to the ground on contact.

Everybody’s heart drops five stories, including mine. Young picks it back up with his left hand and walks away, not knowing that Dol-bae has seen the whole thing.

He tells Gongmin that 900 more enemy soldiers are on their way here, but they’re just sitting ducks. Young: “I might not be able to protect you.”

He knows that the king is expecting the council to use his seal and send their troops here, but Young says those councilmen are weak and right about now they’re sitting there debating until their heads burst. Well, you’re not wrong.

But Gongmin argues that they have to become strong. If they remain weak, he can do nothing as king, and if he’s going to drag his people into a war, he needs their permission. Young: “Do you trust the people?”

Gongmin: “I now consider myself one of the people.” Young understands, and prepares his men for the seemingly insurmountable battle headed their way.

Eun-soo sits in a daze, and finds Young’s aspirin bottle among his things. She takes out the little flower and holds it in her hand. She asks how dangerous it is for Young where he is, and Dae-man does his best to instill confidence in the general.

She muses, “There will be a lot of blood.” He asks what she’s thinking. Eun-soo: “Just that living here would be like this, and that he’s lived his whole life this way.”

The council is infuriatingly slow, debating the merits of voting by majority, while everybody’s lives are at stake. GAH. Noguk starts to look ghostly pale, like she’s seconds away from fainting.

More and more enemy soldiers arrive, and Young stands alone, waiting for them to come to him. I just always love that moment.

He steadies his sword. My nerves are a wreck. But he cuts through them swiftly, and makes the second wave of men back away in fear.

Ki Chul’s minion breaks into the prison to free Flute Boy and Firestarter, who only complain that he took so long. Way to be grateful, guys.

Deok-heung complains that they haven’t gone to the palace yet, and Ki Chul finally loses his patience, screeeaming that they can’t just do that when they haven’t killed Gongmin yet. I love that he’s blowing a gasket, like Deok-heung is just an annoying little child.

Ki Chul is also noticeably shivering, almost as if his icy ki powers are chilling him from the inside now. His minion arrives to announce that more troops are on their way, and he says this is what they’ve been waiting for.

The council KEEPS going ’round and ’round, and finally Noguk bursts out: “Just say that you’re abandoning him! Just say that you’re abandoning your king. He trusts you and is waiting—he’ll wait a night, a hundred more—but I can’t watch this anymore, so just say that you’re throwing him away. Do you neither have the courage to abandon him, nor the courage to choose him?”

Damn, can we put her in charge?

Finally, the royal army gets the decree to go save the king. They head out. Ki Chul’s minion comes running in to give them the news, and Ki Chul just shakes his head, “That’s impossible.”

He swears they’re already here, but Ki Chul refuses to believe it. I seriously think he’s a few marbles short. Well, more than usual I mean.

And Deok-heung must sense that he’s not going to be protected by sticking with McBonkers over here, because he slips out the first chance he gets.

I love that the royal army arrives to find the compound littered with bodies, and Young standing exactly in the same place he was before. Ever the stoic badass.

They go in to report to the king, and he lights up at their arrival—are they here because the council is backing him? They are! Hurrah!

Young goes after Deok-heung, but Hatty the Assassin arrives to get him out first. Drat.

The Woodalchi finally arrive back home, and Eun-soo comes running out to meet Young. He walks past her since they’ve got an audience, but when she follows him into the room, he avoids her gaze and starts to walk out with clothes to change.

She stops him and says she’ll help him with his armor, and he backs away, “This isn’t my blood.” She says she knows, and that he doesn’t have to shut down around her.

She puts her arms around him and hugs him, even in his bloody armor, to show him that it’s okay. Aw. They’ve come so far since the days she’d call him a murderer and shrink away in disgust.

Noguk pours Gongmin a drink, as he rattles off all the things he’d like to do to Deok-heung, and she just asks in her usual way what his one concern of the day is. I like that her strategy for dealing with the worrywart king is to tell him he only gets one a day.

He smiles, “In the day you move the council’s hearts, and at night you seek to know the king’s?” He says that he feels unsettled about making Young pay the price—he got his just cause (for war) but Young alone had to shed blood for him to get it.

Envoy Sohn Yoo tells Deok-heung to leave the country, if he ever hopes to return someday. He digs in his heels, “But I’m the king!” Buddy, look around—you are not the king. He packs up his own belongings as he says all this, including Eun-soo’s surgical tools.

So Deok-heung, ever the rat who finds another escape hatch, goes to Ki Chul and says he knows where Hwata’s things are. The way Ki Chul lights up at the mention of heaven is so great. He’s just a barrel of nuts now.

Deok-heung describes the film canister with the letter inside that Eun-soo had, and says that he burned the back pages of the diary, but hid the rest of the items in the safest place imaginable… the palace, natch.

Eun-soo tests Young’s hand again, but can’t find anything outwardly wrong. She needs to see it act up to know what’s wrong, and brings over his sword. I’m just glad he’s even telling her about his hand issues, because he’s just the type to ignore it.

I love that he uses the sword as an excuse to put his arms around her, as he tells her about it. It was his teacher’s, and it’s called the Noble Sword. It never dulls, it unsheathes quietly, and it gleams even in the dark. He says it doesn’t usually stain with blood either, but yesterday he saw it bloody.

She looks at it in her hands, “I stabbed you with this sword.” He says it stabbed his teacher too. Yikes, that’s true—is it always meant to kill its master? I don’t know if I like this enchanted god sword if it’s going to turn on us.

Eun-soo asks how hard it was for him when his teacher died—did he sleep so much afterwards because he wanted to see him in his dreams? He says he did at first, but stopped showing up, even though he waited.

She asks if he’d still be sleeping now, if he hadn’t met her. He says he doesn’t know. He sighs that he couldn’t catch the man who poisoned her, and looks down at the sword, musing that it’s not cutting the people it should, and only killing the ones to be pitied.

She looks over at her antidote experiments worriedly, but doesn’t say a word.

In the morning, the king gives the order for the army to capture Ki Chul and Deok-heung. He asks Young to stay behind and asks how much time is left before heaven’s door opens. He says 14 days.

Gongmin tells him to just go out today, and then spend the rest of the time with Eun-soo, saying that he heard about her losing the antidote. Ha, well that didn’t take long. Young gapes at the news. Dae-man stutters that he was told not to say anything, and tells Young that she cried a lot. “When she cries, I can’t say anything.” Ha.

He goes to Aunt who confirms it, and tells him that Eun-soo’s only concern was what’ll happen to him if she dies.

Young does his job and goes to see Sohn Yoo, having tracked Deok-heung here. The envoy tells him he’s already in Yuan by now, and Young sends his men to sweep the place anyway.

Sohn Yoo asks after Eun-soo, saying he met her and knows she’s from heaven. He says he let her be, since he knows there’s no cure for her poison, but warns cryptically that Young might die if he stays by her side, and adds a warning to watch out for Ki Chul.

Are you just against Eun-soo meddling with history, or do you actually know something?

Young braces himself outside his door, and then goes in but finds the room empty. He looks in the antidote jars—they’re empty. He sends the whole table crashing to the ground in a fury.

Eun-soo checks on Noguk and says she’s doing very well. She gives her (and Aunt) some soaps she made, and Noguk guesses that she’s preparing to say goodbye. Eun-soo says she’ll answer that question now, about her future with the king.

She asks if she says they don’t have another child until ten years later, what will they do in the meantime? Stop seeing each other? Noguk smiles, understanding what she means. Eun-soo says they don’t have very long together, “less than a hundred years in fact, so you should spend every day like today, loving each other.” Aw. Good answer.

Noguk doesn’t know the word “love,” so Eun-soo teaches it to her: “Liking someone so much you cannot measure it in words. Missing him even when he is beside you. Love.”

Young catches up to her as she’s leaving the queen’s room, and he asks her angrily why she didn’t tell him what happened. What was her plan? Eun-soo: “To act like everything’s fine.” He asks how everything can be fine, but she says calmly that the Woodalchi protected her, and the antidotes were ruined but she’s starting again.

He demands to know how she’s going to find a cure in time before she dies, and she takes issue with all the death talk when she’s making an effort to live. Young: “Just once… just this once, I broke a promise. In breaking my promise to send you back, I was selfish just this once. Without a plan, without strength, with no way to protect you! What have I done?”

Eun-soo corrects him: “Who makes a promise alone?” But he’s already made up his mind: “I take it back, my request for you to stay.” No! You can’t do that! No take-backs! Tell him there are no take-backs!

The big lug won’t listen to reason, and stalks off. Sigh.

Kool and the Gang pack up their belongings in preparation to flee to Yuan, but Ki Chul refuses to leave without retrieving his Hwata toys. They argue, but he won’t budge without them, “Because they’re MINE.”

He wants Eun-soo too, of course, and says all they need to draw her out is Young. Good luck with that. But then Hwasuin remembers seeing Young’s trembling hand, and says she’ll happily face-off against him.

Flute Boy asks Ki Chul why he’s so obsessed with Eun-soo anyway, and Ki Chul wonders himself if it’s because he can’t have her that he wants her so badly. I believe this is why the phrase No shit, Sherlock was invented.

Eun-soo sits with fresh yellow flowers, thinking back to all the times Young protected her, from the very beginning. Mostly this montage just makes me miss his ponytail.

Choong-seok finds her and says it’s getting late, wanting to escort her back safely. He adds awkwardly that Young just doesn’t know how to express it, but “his temperament isn’t… totally foul.” HAHAHA. I luff him.

She humors him, not letting on how sweet Young actually is, and Choong-seok says if it’s really uncomfortable in that room, he can try and find her another one. He says the boys talk about always finding a pair of chairs put together like a makeshift bed, and he guesses that Young would never give up his bed for anyone. Heh. This cracks me up.

When she returns to the room, Young just stands there like a statue, and says they’ll leave first thing in the morning. She says he said what he wanted and left, so now it’s her turn: “I’m going to make my medicine, and I’m going to remain here.”

Young says no, but she cuts him off, “I’m going to stay behind, and be by your side. And I’m not going to waste my days worrying about whether I’ll stay or go based on something like this.”

Young: “Do you know what you’re saying?” Eun-soo: “I know. If it goes wrong, I could die. In front of your eyes. If that happens, watch over me. Hold me until the end. And don’t leave me alone.”

He actually scoffs, and storms out. Are you not listening to her?

And then he storms back inside and orders her to pack right now, and he’ll haul her to heaven’s door slung over his shoulder if he has to. She asks what happens after that—doesn’t he care what happens to her? He says she’ll get to live.

Eun-soo: I’ll live. I’ll live in my room. I’ll see people whose faces I don’t know. I’ll say things I don’t mean all day. And then at night I’ll return to my empty room. As I fall asleep, I’ll call out, “Are you there?” I know there won’t be an answer. And then I’ll wake up in the morning, and live another day just like that. Like a person who’s already dead. Do you not know what living like that is like? You do know, because you’ll live the same way.

He says that the last few days while she was dying, he couldn’t even stay by her side. “Instead of finding a cure to save my woman, I was running around killing people! How can I protect you? How can you ask me to stay by your side?!”

She looks up at him through her tears, and then suddenly, his hand starts to quake. Oh no. It stops them both in their tracks, and she clutches it to her heart, crying.

COMMENTS

There are a million ways their conflict could’ve played out, but I’m happy with it namely because of Eun-soo. She’s a character that I’ve liked from day one, because she speaks her mind and doesn’t let anyone make her decisions for her. So when Young acts like a noble idiot, I know she won’t stand for it and let him get away with it. She’s built up enough trust there, that I know: even if she goes, it’ll be her choice.

I expected as much from him, in that Young only sees his self-worth as a protector, and nothing more. So when he fails to keep her safe, when he knows with near-certainty that if she stays she’ll die, he can’t compute any other option. He is his honor, and his word. And his word was to protect her. It’s a nice return to the conflict that opened the show, now heightened (and complicated, natch) by love.

What I like is that these two characters have been so clearly solidified that it feels perfectly in character for him to refuse and be stupidly noble, and for her to call him out on why that’s stupid. I can stand for him to do the infuriating thing if I know she’ll nip it in the bud. I love her declaration to him because it’s not noble at all. It would be more selfless of her to leave him behind so that he could sleep at night knowing she was alive. But she also knows that it wouldn’t be living. And isn’t that why he fell in love with her in the first place—because she made him question the difference between living and existing? Because he saw that she knew how to live each day truly alive?

And that’s why we love her too, because she’d rather choose to stay near him, if even for one more day, and if she has to die, she’d rather die in his arms. I hope that Young will come full circle and understand why that’s living, and that it’s probably the answer to the very thing he’s been searching for all these years.

I wish that Eun-soo hadn’t been poisoned the first time, because here it works to force the question between life, death, and love, whereas before it was just a plot maneuver, and sort of took the punch out of the second time. I honestly wish a great number of things (So. Many. Things.) in this show had been handled differently, but now that we’re near the finish line, I’m happy with where we are in the central conflict, and that it’s been crafted to deal with—not the meaning of life—but the meaning of living.

Girlfriday, I was wondering why you did not highlight the fact that CY practically threw his sword on the table and ignored it when it fell to the floor?

I thought it has some significance, and if I am right, then the last 2 episodes will probably unravel for us.

Okay am i the only one who thinks that eunsoo could actually go back to 2012, get treated then come back to goryeo? Remember how it took choi young a day to find a doctor when he first time traveled and even after she treated the queen the portal was still open?? Makes sense right? since she said the poison only need an examination and a shot in her world for her to be cured? I hope the ending ends somewhat like this! If they ever separate them in any way am gonna start a murder spree on the writer and pd. LOL

I thought that too, but then I thought that was probably the first Eun-soo's plan, only it got screwed up and that's how she wound up back too far in the past. I just think there's no guarantees with time travel. The best way would be for both of them to go back, heal Eun-soo, and then go back together, but I don't know if Choi Young could show his face since he's all wanted for assault and kidnapping in the future...

I think the same! I was wondering if the third object would have something to do with ES going back to 2012 and screw up while trying to return. That's why when people suppose that the third object is the antidote, it makes sense, it would be to stop her from going back.

It could work....remember, a few hours in 2012 modern world is just a few minutes in Gorgoyeo ? And after she's healed, Eun-soo will become Mrs CY and lived her whole life with her General and will not ever go back to her own world. This is the ending I'm envisaging.

I'll be joining you on that spree. Count me in. I'm soooo sick and tired of cruelly sad endings in K-dramas. I'm still grieving over the 'Bad guy' ending. It was sooooo senseless. The director of that show should NEVER be alone in an alley with me at night. He won't come out alive.

In this episode, the prospects of the antidote are diminished. ES is choosing to stay back expecting to live a quality love life with CY however short her life may be. Modern Korea can only offer a lonely corpse-like existence without CY (the Gangnam style?). CY is supposed to have learnt from ES about living and yet his immediate reaction to the loss of the antidote, is to send ES back to modern Korea. This is understandable as he argues that he hasn’t been providing much quality time anyway. Does he have faith that she will be able to adapt without him? She has impressed him with her capability to live and she has even taught him, the queen and others(?) about living. Won’t she find someone else in heaven to “carry on” living meaningfully just as he has learnt without his former love? Temporarily, she can learn to bite the bullet (CY’s dagger in her case). Then, CY will be offering ES more life and living. His love for ES will be of a higher order and even more impressive. I’m merely articulating my reactions. My apologies to those who want to see CY and ES together! I want them together too!

i am not Korean so i'm not too familiar with their history but i think i read it somewhere that Choi Young would be in his 70s or 80s before he dies, so if they would follow history CY would stay in the past. I hope if ES would return to the present, she would either find herself with CY baby or that at the end she would accidentally meet a guy who looks exactly like CY.

I really hate endings with the heroine finding a new love who looks exactly like her old love.....

Wouldn't it be a torture for her.... like thinking...' same but not the same ' ? If she must find a new love, it wld be better off if she finds someone completely new, with NO physical resemblance !

mamae and mia, I don't think that Eun-Soo will meet someone who looks exactly like Young in present korea. I DO think that she will meet the reincarnation of Young, when she goes back to the present. After all, the fortune teller said that her husband will be someone that she had met in the past. Maybe, she had ran into the reincarnated Young before, but doesn't realize it. But, her time traveling will help her know that he was her one true love. Perhaps, if she was able to ensure that Young lives on in Goryeo even when she leaves, then she will be able to meet his 21st century self in the present. But, if he dies before he reaches his elderly age, then she won't see him in present korea. That's just my speculation.

I'm hoping i won't be dissappointed....ES and CY together till the end....Bec. of this i watched City Hunter and agree with some comments, LMH is awesome in acting......I think he is one of the best actors Korea have, action, drama, comedy, romance....

Thanks for the witty and very droll recap. Who would've thought a pony tail could mean so much?

It's just me, but I'd opt for Eun Soo to go back to her time and save herself, then try to come back again in Choi Young's time. It's a big risk, but at least there's that chance they'll be together instead of just dying in his time. (A risk w/ the same percentage ratio of success like that one Boong Do took when he made himself an arrowcushion in QIHM) Also, it seems, with this crazy time-loop principle, the Present Eun Soo will have to go back to her time in order for that diary to exist. Whatevs are those portal calculations for?

Yeah, the portal calculations puzzle me. Because I thought maybe future Eun-soo went back to heal herself and then went back before the portal closed but wound up in the wrong time. But that doesn't really work b/c she wouldn't have had a reason to buy a diary and those film canisters, a pocket watch, and whatever the last mystery item is. Holes in my theories, lol.

Thank you for the recap!!!

I totally understand what you explained about living and it makes completely sense.

However, I am still on CY's side on this one. It is impossible for someone to ask for the one we love to stay with you and die rather than sending that person away for her safety. I would do/say the exact same thing than CY.

You said in the recap that CY is acting like a noble idiot, and I couldn't disagree more. Even if ES has a point about the meaning of living, I still think she is the one acting like a noble idiot. Give up your life for a few days of love? What kind of crap is that? She feels like this at the moment, but how does she know if she is going to heal from her heartbreak in the future or not? (well, apart from futureES hinting so in her letters)
Not to say that it would be horrible for CY to have her die in his arms while knowing she could have lived a long time in her own world!

So, yeah, here, I'm rooting with CY, but what's great with that show, is that I totally understand ES's decision too. She is a kind of noble idiot, but at the same time, not really. I feel for her, whereas I usually want to smack the other noble idiots on their heads (for example, Young Rae in Dr Jin. Perfect example. Never-ending tears. Illogical stupid choices. And she even risked her life for a freakin' ring! Augh!).

That said, I have a question for you guys. Did you notice Mr Envoy saying to Ki Chul that in the past he wanted to restore Goguryeo, and Ki Chul repeats "Goguryeo?" and the subtitles said it was one of the three kingdoms prior to Goryeo. So my question is: was that a long time ago or not? I don't understand why Mr Envoy would talk about Goguryeo?

I believe there's more than one person from the past running around and Mr. Envoy is the likely candidate. That's why he wanted to kill ES. He has first hand knowledge about how something you do in the present can influence the past/future. For example, how did he know exactly what kind of letter to send to ES for her to come running to him? How did he know that she had healed someone she shouldn't have? The man knows too much and it's because of where he came from.

I cant wait for the finale. I did not think the queen;s man could get a happy ending, but that did not disappoint. I also was thinking why can't she just get the meds and come back. but that might be why she went to another earlier time line. Wormhole becoming all timey whimey. CY shaking hand. problem This may be the the fading out of the ki powers since there is no such thing in modern life. gc and cy both have the power and are having problems

The only thing is flute boy and fire girl seem to be fine. Plus the mysterious guy in the black hat who Choi Young should have just killed when he had the chance. He knew the man couldn't stop killing so why??? Ugh. Anyway, if flute boy and fire girl suddenly drop dead and it is the fading of the ki powers, I'd actually be fine with that.

Hmm...never was a fan of Kim Hee Sun too. But she did do well in this episode. And surprisingly I think they make a good couple although I still feel that in some scenes she seem too old for him. I just wished that we could have less of the same old same old with Deuk Heung running and hiding all the time, and the crazy dude craving for the Hwata things.

I waited for you last night, but gave up. I hope your morning is starting off as great as mine, you are here! Thank you for your recaps. I am now trying to stretch these last few episodes out as much as possible. Look at them raw for the general gist of the story, then in captions, then your crowning touches.

Chomping at the bit to know the next moves and how this will resolve, but the catch to that is that it is then over. Shucks!! This one was soooooo good, they finally opened up to one another on their own level. Auntie’s hints to ES, I felt she took to heart, in trying to help him understand how she was feeling and what her and his life would be like if they parted. Ouch, I felt her void, so beyond pain.

This one left me with some plot/general questions, okay they all do, but this one especially:

1. Crackers (Ki Chul) really went down hill
fast after the king meeting, how/why?
Still fixated on the heavenly aspect though.
2. Schmuck still has Hwata’s tools he took
from Crackers, and throws this out to them
as to where to get them if they do away
with ES and CY. Okay, but what is
wrapped up in square shaped material
that was always looked/passed over
when looking in Cracker’s box of goodies?
3. Anyone but me wondering how the official
from Yuan could pulled a pocket watch out
and looked at it as if it is nothing? From
what I can find they come along about the
16th century, and this is taking place in
the 14th century, hummmm?

Notes:
ep. 7 about 36 min., this is right before Crackers kills the former young king and ES and CY are at the ‘minnion’s’ house. She is out picking mint for a drink, picks that yellow flower, and he calls her “Imja” from the walkway above. Right?

Ep. 22 about 40 min., Schmuck is telling Crackers about the other heaven material. Crackers is huddling in his bankie as he is ‘ill’ and his face is the main in view. His facial expressions are ‘oh my!’ or ‘oh no!,’ watch his left ear, he moves with his eyebrows, up or down. That is talent!

The dessert is now here until next week . . . . . . . . .

It's funny that the head Woodalchi guy thinks CY is mistreating ES and suggests another room for her. EVERYBODY knows that they are a couple. He's so clueless,LOL.

Some people mentioned that the last relic of Hwata's might be the antidote...I was thinking the same exact thing!! Didnt Ki Chul say that its hard to explain and that she needs to see it to believe it? Lets pray that it is. I don't know how I want this drama to end. Happily, might not be realistic, but what drama ever is. Sadly, but that'll be too sad...I think I'll just go rewatch some of Young and Eunsoo's nice koments together.

I super agree with your point about the first poisoning. I also agree with your response to Eun-soo--and I'm super glad we have so far in this avoided the noble idiot...

All of the attachments I've built up over the course of the series are finally paying off now with some really great scenes from our leads!

Great recap :) Thanks!

I don't know, but a part of me wanted Eun-Soo to take Young to the future so that they can be together and be cured of their illnesses.

On the other hand, I hope that Eun-Soo is saved and was able to live happily ever after with Choi-Young in Goryeo. Maybe, she won't be able to cure him but she can help him somewhat with this hand problem. Perhaps it was this illness that led to his demise and the fall of Goryeo? Which then became Korea? Hmm.... interesting.

I also wanna shove Ki-Chul into the time portal because I just felt so bad for him :( The way he lights up with puppy eyes when DH told him where Hwata's items are, just touches my heart. This guy is going loco in an adorable way. LOL.
Hmm... maybe Eun-Soo and Young will get to the portable but make the last minute decision that they will stay together in Goryeo. As a result, Ki-Chul will enter the portal instead. Then, the Korea police can find him dressed weird and acting crazy in present korea, that they arrested him and sent him to the mental ward. ROTFL. They can arrest him because he have chi power problems and can't use it, unlike Choi Young. Hahaha :D

You know, I'm not sure if I care how this resolves in the end as a happy ending or happy as you can be or star crossed as long neither of them die and Choi gets a friggin break. Really, just let the man love and sex and eat and sleep and fish for a week before living his destiny as a historic figure and I'll be good.

SHOW! you're killing me, here. this episode was majorly frustrating for me.

i was yelling so much, that neighbors called. OY. somebody in this drama needs to grow a pair and do some rat killing. seriously. i'm really upset.

OY.everyone needs to die. i have totally given up. and what's killing me is that all hope is shattered AND we are down to the last few episodes. OY. just kill everyone, already. i'm so frustrated right now.

oh-and thanks for recap.

hi it's my first time reading this recap in this page since I'm a huge fan of the drama and it's my first drama live so I can't wait to see the next episode, i have a lot of questions and since Philip lee had to leave the drama due to a eye surgery that changes the plot, since I noticed in one of the trailers that he actually saves her with the help of CY... it leaves me with a lot of doubts and all the things that are not tied up well in the story I'm confussed and i simply don't think that the last 2 episodes will explain all the things that are going on in the plot...ut the recap was awsome i must say!!

has anyone seen the movie casanova (with heath ledger)? what are the chances of that sort of an ending here... where he does leave everything and travel to the future with her, and someone else (now don't ask who!! i don't know!) takes over his legacy... then her antidote and his troublesome hand/nerve thingy will get seen to...
i guess i'm looking for any way that we can have a happy ending!

Thanks Girlfriday for the recap.

I'm in the middle of reading and about the scene of Young's hand rattling after he fights with Ki Chul's soldiers outside the room, when I watched it, once he has killed all the soldiers present at that time, I noticed the way he looks at the bloodied soldiers who he has killed and its what I think cause his right hand (which he use to fight and kill people) to be shaken and weaken. He said before that the sword has started to become heavy to him. I don't think his hand condition now is a sign of sickness but instead a reaction resulted from the intense emotion inside him at that moment. Thus why his hand once again shakes at the end of the episode too.

With how the current Young feels about killing people, I'm wondering how he will become such a well-known warrior in the future, if they will keep that part of the history. This is a great conflict to me that I've yet to see showcased before. A warrior, a soldier killing the baddies is awesome, but what they feel.. I never wondered about it.

I skipped to read your final comments and wow, that is an amazing piece you write there, ending so beautifully too - Not the meaning of life, but the meaning of living.

All I am trying to understand is the fact that she has time travelled before,I really want that mystery cleared up it makes no sense. And if Ki chul gets to time travel it better not be with his two psycho buddies. On his own he is crazy enough imagine three psychotic killers one with a death flute and one with fireballs running loose in the city...that is a whole other Drama I in itself guess.

Rereading your recaps on the ending of this episode made me realize one thing. Young, really wants Eun-Soo to stay with him. But, only if she won't suffer and die in order to do that. And since, he realized that he is not around her all of the time to protect her like he promised her, he wanted to take back his promise and send her back to the present where he knows that she will be safe. Unfortunately, Eun-Soo doesn't want to be safe because that would mean living a life without him so she would rather chose to be with him and die. I totally feel what CY is going through. She was his number 1 priority and the king was the 2nd. But still, he needs to make sure that the king is alive and well, thus he needs to leave Eun-Soo alone by herself and go protect the king. Poor CY!!!

I feel sorry for Eun-Soo too. The last thing that she wanted was to let him watch her die. This must be a hard decision for her. But she made this decision because she wanted to spend the last moments of her life with him. Isn't this what a person would want to do if he/she is sick and dying? I would prefer this kind of character over someone who is sick and dying but is trying to run away from their loved one. Thus, I still love Eun-Soo.

Poor CY and ES! I hate DH and his cockiness. I hope that KC will freeze DH's brains with his cold chi. LOL. After all, KC did wanted to kill DH. Since, KC is suffering anyways, then let him use his last chi to do that before he loses his powers, etc. and get shoved into the portal like I wanted. LOL :D

*sighs* next weeks' episodes, just doesn't come soon enough.

It's not like CY or the Wudalchi have a factory job where they can clock out and leave work at the end of the day. Makes relationships and other non-job events difficult if not impossible. That's why in previous episodes CY had to leave his "job" as general and protector to the king for ES and to protect her, posing conflict betwen bro/romance. Cuz you can't have both. I guess it portrays military life and its conflicted and intense loyalties.

Interestingly the King used a democratic method to win his kingship. The King reckoned CY didn’t understand. (I think he understood but had less faith in the scholars than the King. Then again, he wanted a speedy return to ES) CY couldn’t overrule the King’s method because CY was only a subject. However he was verbally more vehement against ES’s decision to stay to live out the last quality moments with CY. He would even forcibly carry her to the wormhole, he said. I guess he couldn’t be more ‘’democratic’’ when the woman he loves is in mortal danger. His approach may be considered ‘’manly’’ and has its appeal to some who may say that, as long as it is restricted to some circumstances and that it can be made malleable by the traditional gender equalisation measure, aptly called “aegyo” by the Koreans. We have witnessed the process at work at the scene where ES pretended to take a picture of CY. CY was more apologetic and exercised more tact without appearing to be imposing when he did his public kiss, a situation ES had a free choice between 2 men. I don’t think CY was being disrespectful or being manly when he overruled ES’s decision to stay. He was being rational. He has survived a love loss and learnt to love again. He knows ES is resilient and strong. After all she has taught him how to live. All she needs now is to survive in modern Korea to have a chance to live.

Maybe I missed this, but why is Choi Young leaving with Eun Soo back to "heaven" not an option?

0

Required fields are marked *

Because Choi Young has an important role in history, for Choi to leave would change the future. Eun Soo knows this and has even told him he is famous in "Heaven." He doesn't want to know his future, but based on the Choi characters behavior thus far, he would believe her and the importance of him staying in his own time. Also, my take is that he thinks he's not deserving enough for "Heaven," or thinks he would not fit in that world.

I just watched this episode and that last scene killed me. Aww. I know we've all been saying "what if" or "I wish" to a lot of things that could've made Faith better but we've been saying that since episode 5 or 7 so I guess it's time to move on. We really can't do anything about it and we only have two episodes left. I stuck with Faith initially because of Lee Min-ho, then because of Kim Hee-sun's character Eun-soo, and mostly because I wanted to know how they would resolve this romance.

Can't wait for next week's episodes. Thanks for the wonderful recaps. And for sticking to this drama. I would've hated it if the recaps became weecaps. ;)

This show is so interesting. Most dramas deal with life and death, but this drama, while it has those elements in abundance, focuses on living and existing, as if they are far harder to do. And they are. I think Buffy said it best: The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. And that's what Young and Eun-soo, and all our characters (mostly) are facing. They need to find the will and the strength to live in their world and to accept the rules of the world or change them as best they can. While for Young and Eun-soo, and Gongmin and Noguk love and duty play huge factors in their will to live, for Ki Chul and Deok-heung it is their desire for power that drives them to live. Everyone needs on thing to put their faith in that will drive them through their lives, and this show helps us to question what is more important to live for: knowing the person you love is alive and well; living with the person you love for as long as possible even if you'll die; getting the power you think you deserve because your life is rotten; or having power so you can find a way to heaven, and a peace you crave with all your being.

I think that is what this show is really about. Faith is kind of an ambiguous term, because it mean so many thing to different people and different situations. Which is why I love this show.

Only two more episodes, and I am anxious to see how this all plays out. Thanks for the recap, Girlfriday!

Am I the only one who gets flutters each time Eun Soo hugs Young ??? I have been sniffling at these oh-so-cute moments , I will be watching it all over again . Wow , the chemistry is subtle in a leaping-off-the-screen-for-the-viewers kinda way but wooooow , K-Drama rocks . Lee Min Ho jus made it easy to fall for Wooldachi General Choi Young and all his awkwardness when it comes to feelings . When he says 'my woman...' Oooh that is my undoing xoxoxo
