Lee Min-jung’s Black Swan jewelry shoot
by javabeans
Um. It’s certainly a look. Lee Min-jung is going Black Swan (ish) for her new photo shoot, which is for jewelry company Stone Henge. Her other promos for the brand have been clean-cut and fresh-faced (she wore some of their accessories in Big), but this one takes a decidedly more dramatic approach.
The photo shoot apparently takes its inspiration from four ballets: Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and Giselle. See if you can spot which is which. Mostly, I’m seeing feathers.
She models a number of items, notably a jeweled tiara that’s worth 100 million won (about $100,000 USD). I presume that’s her Sleeping Beauty look, though who knows? Maybe they’re reinterpreting Don Quixote as a glamorous dark princess.
Frankly it’s not my favorite Lee Min-jung shoot, but I do like when actresses try something different with their images. Especially when the sweet, innocent look is the default setting for most 20- and 30-something starlets. Unless they’re playing villainesses, in which case they’re still styled fresh and innocent-like, just wearing darker lipstick and a scowl.
The Stone Henge ads will be seen, among other places, in Octobers issues of fashion rags Vogue and W.

I actually love the last 2 pics...less "dead bird on head" looking but very chic! And I want that flower ring.

Well, the White/black are obviously Odette and Odile from Swan Lake....the blue, with a "briar" crown is of course sleeping beauty, and the Spanish fans make the last one Don Quixote. Giselle, however....is neither a princess, nor is there any feathers involved that I know of, they look like the "human" form of Odile.....so....not sure if she's missing or if the middle pictures are a "re-interpret" ...?

Wow! I'm suffering a lot of dissonance from her usual image. And I've gotta say that she looks great... but isn't quite pulling it off for me.

I LOVE the hair cut, though. She has the perfect tiny gamine face to pull off that short, feathery/messy look. My hair would never do it, but I did try, over and over, before realising that my hair, like my brain, likes things to be STRAIGHT and IN ORDER and NEVER EVER CHANGE.
sigh.

I was so inspired by these pics I yanked the longest feather out of my trusty old featherduster and clipped it artistically on the right side of my head just like in the pic. I must say it looked amazing.

there are few actresses who are actually good models—i don't know if it's fair to expect them to be on par with pros, but their facial expressions leave a lot to be desired. lee min-jung in particular doesn't seem to have very many beyond the wide-eyed blank doe look.
i do dig the makeup though.

That wide-eyed blank look - maybe it has to do with the feathers? Cos I notice chickens tend to sport that particular starey-eyed spaced-out look too.

I believe that no matter how awful the idea might be, a good model will bring it into effect.
In this case it is an opposite side: an idea seems very interesting, but the expressions, modeling... I don't know, something is a little bit off... though the first and the second to last photos look nice (if you didn't look into others).

I'm thing the one with the veil is the 'Giselle' shot as the lead character in that ballet was a dead bride-to-be.
Not too fond Of these shots as I think they could have portrayed each ballet a bit more clearly. But I do think that the haircut looks great on her.

Oh, I see! That would fit more with white lillies than my comment below, since you can also give white lillies at weddings (they have a happy meaning when given at weddings)!

Except in the ballet Giselle and the other sylphs always wear white. That's why i figured that one was Sleeping Beauty

Oh? So maybe I was right after all. Lol, I like that everyone seems to have a different answer anyway. I guess we see different things in each one..or maybe this shows just how a like heroines in ballets can be..

I think you're supposed to look at the Jewelry for the ballet. I think the silver looking outfit (with the net over the face) and the white lily jewelry is Sleeping Beauty. White Lilies can mean purity and can also be a symbol of death (which explains the morbidness).
I like it, it's perfect for October. Reminds me a little of Tim Burton.

I'm probably weird but I couldn't recognize her until the last-but-one picture when she wears a veil and the flower ring and its matching bracelet.
(I was even wondering if you were talking about "Gil Da Ran" or the bitchy doctor or someone else from Big...)
Is it the haircut that changes her face so much? Or the thick make up which makes her face look so white, or, well, both? Dunno. Maybe that's just me.

100,000 for that thing?! Even Lee Min Jung couldn't
make it look good...and she makes anything look flawless.
The only good photo is the one where she is wearing
gray (since they didn't go crazy with the black makeup
on her eyes).
I agree this photo shoot just failed for me, especially for
having one of the most beautiful women on the planet
and coming up with this >:(

The 2nd to last is almost definitely Giselle. The stuff on her head is probably moss (from a grave), but the key is the flower jewelry. There's an important "he loves me, he loves me not" scene, then the flowers she uses to let her lover see her spirit, and the white flowers he brings to her grave.
AND rosemary (or something) to raise her from the dead.

She's not modeling very well, she has the same dead expression in every shot! It fits well, but you can't just use it for every. single. shot.
Her hair is absolutely gorgeous though!!

So...
1st (placeholder) to 4th pics - Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" (Лебединое озеро Lebedinoe ozero), as both Odette and Odile. Clues were the wing jewelry pieces, and the black-and-white contrast (that would've made Diane de Poitiers proud).
5th & 6th pics - Marius Petipa (& Tchaikovsky's) "Sleeping Beauty" (Спящая красавица Spyaschaya krasavitsa). Clues were the tiara, and especially the 6th pic, the narcolepsy. LOL
7th pic - Petipa's revival (I guess, but with conviction since the version passed to the modern day is his choreography for the Imperial Russian Ballet revivals) of "Giselle" (Giselle ou les Wilis). Clue was the ethereal pearl grey look, since she was a ghost most of the time.
8th pic - Petipa's "Don Quixote", as Aldonza Lorenzo AKA Dulcinea del Toboso. Clue was the Spanish abanico jewelry pieces.
---
I admit the pics do look lovely, even if my opinion contradicts the others. I just love the classy look.
