Faith: Episode 10

Some major revelations, a new set of questions, and some nice character moments… though they don’t quite add up to the most exciting episode on the block. Eun-soo finally begins to realize that there are some unexpected and massive consequences to her being in this time and place, and finds that she’s connected to more than she imagined. But… what does it all mean?

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Eun-soo opens up Hwata’s diary, said to be a thousand years old. She reels as she flips through the pages scrawled with numbers. She gets to the last page, and there in the corner is her name: Eun-soo.

Ki Chul asks what it says, what it means. But Eun-soo just stammers, “Tell me this is a dream. How can this be? Please tell me this is just a really complicated… long… dream.”

She starts to cry, and Ki Chul runs over to faux-comfort her so he can ask what it says. She tells him that it’s her name, and doesn’t know what the numbers mean. She thinks they might be coordinates, and then wonders if they might tell her the location of the door to her world in her time.

That makes Ki Chul yank it out of her grasp in no time, not wanting to have his heavenly doctor running back home quite yet. She kicks and screams and starts throwing pottery, and Ki Chul just dodges like it’s a fun little game.

Jang Bin runs in to hold Eun-soo back and try to calm her down. She cries frantically that she’s the only one who can read the book, but Ki Chul’s too smart to just give her access to what is clearly something important. He says he’ll return with it another time when she’s calmer.

She wails for Jang Bin to stop them, but he doesn’t have the strength to overpower Ki Chul. She finally crumples in defeat and her mind wanders back to the contents of the diary: “It was hangul. And… it looked like my handwriting. I write my name that way.”

Ooooooooh. Things just got weird. I like. She doesn’t recognize the diary itself, but knows the handwriting. Did future Eun-soo go back to the past a thousand years? Is Hwata from future Seoul? Or is it something even stranger?

Ki Chul stops on his way out to fume at Choi Young – how could he have wasted his opportunity in heaven? All he brought back was the doctor, per the king’s orders? His entire face twitches as he laments this country’s terrible luck, in having that precious door to heaven open for such a brainless thug.

Young just scoffs that it’s probably part of heaven’s design, considering if it had opened in front of Ki Chul, he might’ve cleaned heaven out of all its riches. Ha. Did you call him a thief to his face?

The woodalchi watch nervously as Young paces back and forth in the courtyard, and finally Deok-man screws up the nerve to speak up, but then loses it as soon as Young turns around. Heh. I love this group’s dynamic.

So second-in-command Choong-seok speaks up and asks if he’s not going to go check on the doctor. He paces some more.

He looks back and forth between the men, and chooses Deok-man to go protect the doctor. Sidekick Dae-man stutters that he wants to go, but Young complains that he lost her once before.

Deok-man pushes him aside to say way too eagerly that he’ll guard her with his life. Young knocks him upside the head, “I told you not to go around risking your life on anything! Do you walk around with extra lives in your pocket? Don’t! Don’t do it!”

Pffffft. This coming from YOU? It’s like equal parts self-flagellation and I’m-the-only-one-who-gets-to-do-that. Then another of his men treads carefully and asks their leader, “Aren’t you going to go?” Deok-man adds that the doctor will be waiting for Young… and then ducks thinking he’s going to get hit again. Hahaha.

Young just tells him that if anything happens, not to be stupid and fight, but to take the doctor and run for safety. Deok-man grins like a goof, “Can I piggyback her?” Young kicks him. Hard. Hee.

Just then, a patient gets piggybacked into the hospital for Jang Bin to treat. Eun-soo sits in her room in a daze, and then notices Deok-man lurking outside her window, failing at being inconspicuous. Eun-soo greets him in a resigned tone.

She comes to see the new patient, and we’re told that it’s Yi Seong-gye. Wait. THE Yi Seong-gye? As in grows up to be the general who later kills Choi Young and overthrows Goryeo to become the first king of Joseon?

He’s just a teenager now, and writhing in pain. Eun-soo says he needs surgery, but realizes that her surgical tools were taken. She heads out and Deok-man trails after her, stammering that it’s dangerous.

She gets right in Deok-man’s face to say that she’s not good with directions and mostly she’s been moved back and forth against her will, so could he show her the way to Ki Chul’s house? He protests, and she says someone will die if she doesn’t go get her tools. Deok-man: “But I’ll die!” I love that Young’s wrath is scarier to him than anything else.

She waits for Ki Chul to come meet her, practicing her smile so as to appear pleasant and calm. She’s awesomely terrible at it. But when she asks Deok-man for his opinion, he just blushes, “You’re pretty.” D’aw. You’re adorable. That’ll probably cost you another kick though.

Ki Chul comes in with his entourage thinking she couldn’t wait any longer to read the diary again, but she says she’s just here for her tools today. He uses her wording and asks if she’s not going to make a deal for it, obviously not about to give anything for free.

She asks if he’s already given up on winning her heart. She suggests that if he wins her over, they could decipher the diary together, and then he can go to heaven with her. Well, she certainly knows how to bait him. “Don’t you want to go to heaven?”

She betrays her nerves when she puts out her hand to demand her tools, but he assures her that she needn’t fear him—right now she is his highest concern. Why is that not comforting?

Gongmin goes over the list of people that Young asked of Suribang—those that the king will want to win over to his side. He asks if he can’t have Suribang too, and Young kind of chortles nervously, “They call me… the king’s dog.”

Flashback to that conversation, where ajumma and ajusshi do this hilarious tandem speech as Young eats. Ajusshi: “Have you forgotten how your teacher died? A master will boil water to eat the dog that pledged his loyalty, beating him to a pulp. Why?” Ajumma: “Because then the meat is tender.”

Ajusshi: “But then the leash breaks and the dog escapes. Why?” Ajumma: “Because it hurts.” Ajusshi: “And then the master calls the dog, and the dog comes running back, wagging his tail. Why?” Ajumma: “Because he’s a dog!” Pwaha. I love them.

Young says it’s a different king, and they scoff like he’s drunk the kool-aid, and ajumma actually takes back the food he’s eating, like he doesn’t deserve it. Gongmin laughs to hear the story.

He marks the people on the list for Young to start with, and says that he’s going to try winning some hearts too. Young smiles, and Gongmin adorably checks to make sure it’s not a mocking smile.

Eun-soo operates and saves Yi Seong-gye’s life, and her flashlight glasses finally run out of battery power. So… did she just mess with history or right it when it was veering the wrong way?

Young hands the scroll to Dae-man with instructions, and Dae-man nervously stutters that the doctor went to the House of Ki and returned. Ruh-roh…

He storms in, thwacks Deok-man in the chest, and beelines for Eun-soo. He starts to nag but she cuts him off, countering that she said she was doing fine in that house, and he didn’t have to turn her into a traitor and a pawn.

He scoffs bitterly, “Is that so?” and turns to go. But she stops him with an apology about king Chungjeong—not being able to do anything to save him, making it so that Young had to do that…

He looks up at her in surprise, probably having resigned himself to the idea that she’d never understand. But she apologizes for that, and for stabbing him. She thanks him for living, and says she knows he’s protected her all this time. “Thank you.”

He senses something wrong—she’s being too nice and her words sound so final. He asks what she’s doing. She says she’ll take care of herself from now on, and knows how to deal with Ki Chul now, having tested the waters this afternoon.

She plans to make a deal with him, because she has something he wants. Panicked, Young asks what she has that Ki Chul wants. He shouts until she answers that it’s history. Well, history to her, future for him.

Young asks with alarm if she promised to tell him such things, and she says she’s going to make it up as she goes, giving him the answers he wants to hear—how would he know whether or not they’re true? I would say it’s a good plan if you were a better liar.

Young protests that she doesn’t seem to know what Ki Chul is really like, but she cuts him off: “What I’m saying is, stop concerning yourself with me. I’m going to find my own way back to my world. On my own. I’m saying all this because I don’t know if I’ll see you again. So thank you. I’m sorry. And try not to fight, or get hurt. And eat sometimes.”

She bows her goodbye. He can’t say anything to argue and walks away before she lifts her head. He stops at the door to grab Deok-man by the nape of his neck like an errant puppy, warning him not to let her go out again. She watches him go with a heavy sigh.

But as soon as he steps away, he senses a disturbance overhead. Sure enough, there’s Chun Eum-ja, sneaking onto the roof. They both freeze.

Dae-man gives Choong-seok the scroll with the names, repeating the instructions from Young that he memorized so painstakingly. But as soon as it’s in his possession, Ki Chul’s mole passes by and pretends to trip and fall right into his arms… snatching the scroll while he blushes.

Aw crud, just when the good guys were doing so well. Ki Chul gets handed the scroll along with what Eum-ja overheard—that Eun-soo is planning to feed him lies about the future of this country because he’ll never know the difference. Double crud. Could we maybe get some tighter security around the palace?

Ki Chul fumes and orders the people on the list killed and Eun-soo watched for the time being.

Young confides in Aunt and she wonders if Eun-soo’s a fortuneteller or something, but Young says no—in heaven they have like a record or something. I just love that the idea of heaven is more logical than the future.

Aunt calls Ki Chul a little child with a new plaything. He reasons that maybe Ki Chul really won’t harm her, but Aunt implies that he’s an idiot: “Do you not know what a toy is? A toy is something that when you grow tired of playing with, you throw, you rip up, you break.”

Young: “Do you know you have a habit of exaggerating when you talk?” Heh. She tells him the story of an artist who was so talented that they say butterflies would alight on his paintings of flowers. Ki Chul had to have him, and showered him with the finest wealth.

And then one day he asked the painter to draw him, and didn’t like the result (the artist drew a snake, which HA), so he cut off his hands, scooped out his eyeballs, and threw him out into the street, where people were too afraid to even help him.

Young asks how a toy can extend its shelf life and Aunt says it needs to work to be pleasing, to be loved for as long as possible. Young squashes that idea–the doc isn’t exactly the type to bend her will to please others, and Aunt agrees.

He wonders if maybe he should’ve made her run. Aunt asks if he means that he would run with her, “But haven’t you started too many things here for that? Can you handle it?” He lets out a long sigh.

The warriors connected to Suribang get chased down by the Woodalchi, though they only manage to capture the medicine peddlers (Suribang’s front business).

Young drinks with Dae-man at his side. I love that he literally sits at Young’s feet like his puppy dog. He asks if Dae-man still can’t have a drink, and he says no—if he has a drink, the person next to him dies. Now I wanna see.

The Suribang warriors surround them and start attacking, and Young just calmly continues to drink while holding a panicked Dae-man back.

Ajumma and ajusshi sit down at his table and ask if his master told him to run around capturing their men. They throw insults and demand an explanation, and Young just answers, “Ask him yourself.” Whoa.

Someone walks up in a black hooded cloak. He lifts the hood… and there’s the king, smiling at them all casually.

Haha, by the time we cut back to their reaction, ajumma is already on the ground on her knees. Ajusshi hurriedly follows suit. What was that about the dog and his master you said?

Gongmin just picks up the bottle and asks if they won’t accept a drink from him.

Meanwhile, Eum-ja uses super-hearing to eavesdrop on Eun-soo telling Jang Bin about the future of Goryeo. Eeep! Stop talking! She says that Goryeo eventually becomes Korea (where the name comes from, of course) and wonders what would be interesting enough to tell Ki Chul, but not too harmful.

Jang Bin says he’s on Choi Young’s side—he thinks Ki Chul is too dangerous for her to deal with, and even if she gets that diary, there’s no guarantee it’ll help her return to heaven. She says she’s from Kangnam and there are way scarier people who live there, just with smiles plastered on their faces to hide it.

He wonders how that could be true in heaven, and she admits that she’s not from heaven at all. She told Young this, “but he ignores everything I say.” Eum-ja listens carefully, as she says, “I think I came from the future.” Aaaauuugh.

Deok-man finds him sitting outside and claps at him, thinking he’s sleeping. That gives Eum-ja a sharp pain since he’s using his super-hearing, though sadly he recovers quickly.

Deok-man draws his sword and taunts him, calling him White Hair. I’m worried he might die, but Eum-ja just sighs and walks away, not caring to fight him. Deok-man actually trails after him, a little disappointed, “Are you really going? Don’t you wanna fight?”

Meanwhile, ajumma and ajusshi are busy trying to get out of this situation as best they can, and give a half-assed excuse why all this doesn’t concern them. But Young speaks up to tell the king that with subjects so dangerous, he really only has two choices here: make them his people, or kill them.

Ajusshi forgets he’s in front of the king for a moment, and swears at Young. Hee. Gongmin turns to him (ajusshi’s name is Man-bo) and asks his opinion.

Gongmin: “Look here, Man-bo. What should I do? I’m going to choose one of two things right here. My path as king: Do I take the easy road, shedding some blood on the way? Or do I take the path of virtue, even if it’s a little slower, like a person? I’m going to choose today, right here, based on you. So what should I do?”

Man-bo looks up at him, and then at Young, wondering how to answer.

And from the distance, Hwasuin spies on the meeting and smiles to herself. Seriously, the good guys’ lack of security is starting to irk me.

The next day, Eun-soo tends to Princess Noguk’s wound, as the king watches nervously. And the palace mole turns assassin, as she sneaks Eum-ja into the palace grounds…

Choong-seok and Dae-man argue about who had the scroll of names last, because, uh, neither of them has it anymore. Young asks what the hell they’re doing, only to be interrupted by one of his men, reporting on some news from Suribang. (Oh, so Man-bo must’ve said yes?)

The information: be careful of Chun Eum-ja, because he’s watching the doctor, and he has super-hearing. Thank you! Also, if Suribang is like proto-NTS/CIA, then Young was damn smart about getting them on the good guy roster. People who know everything about everyone are key.

Eum-ja sits on the roof and listens in on Eun-soo talking to the king and queen. She says the scar is healing nicely and pats herself on the back. Noguk says she heard about Eun-soo saving someone else’s life yesterday, and Lady Choi says the child’s name: Yi Seong-gye.

Eun-soo gapes—it’s the first time she’s hearing the patient’s name. “Yi… Seong-gye? No, it can’t be. Not THAT Yi Seong-gye, right? In the history books?” Omg stop talking!

She stumbles over to Jang Bin to ask what would’ve happened to the boy if she hadn’t operated. Jang Bin says he would’ve died. Then it starts to dawn on her… if she hadn’t gone to treat Chungjeong, he wouldn’t have been poisoned… How can it be?

I like this turn—it’s far more chilling to realize that you’re the one making history follow its course.

Gongmin asks if that child Yi Seong-gye is someone she knows. Omg don’t tell him! She answers in a daze, “That child… later… later… House of Yi… Joseon…” but then she finally catches herself and clamps her mouth.

Dude, you did not just say those things out loud! At least out of context, they’re meaningless to someone who doesn’t know what she’s referencing, but still… that’s a very dangerous set of words you just spilled.

Thankfully Young storms in and asks to take the doctor away for a moment. He drags her out, kicking and screaming. He pleads with her to just shut her trap, but she won’t stop yelling. Right now would be a good time to kiss her!

She asks if he knows what he did by bringing her here. She says she may not have paid much attention to history and politics, but she does know one thing: you do not mess with history.

She says she was trying to be careful, but today she operated on someone. And not because she’s some great doctor, but because she wanted an excuse to ruffle Ki Chul’s feathers and see if he’d react to her deal.

“So I operated today. But do you know who that patient is?” He tells her to shut her mouth. She just keeps going, “He grows up to…” Aaaaack! Stop!

He tells her to stop because all that talk about the future and what she knows is just putting her in more danger. But she ignores him and barrels through: “Today, I saved the person who will kill you.”

WHY WOULD YOU TELL HIM THAT?!

Oh. My. God. Seriously? After that speech you just gave about not fucking with history, you’re gonna tell him who kills him? And then she has the gall to whine that she has no one else to talk to about this stuff. And you couldn’t have say, shared your feelings in abstract terms? Bah.

But Young doesn’t have time to dwell, because he senses Eum-ja’s presence. I love that he just calls out, “Woodalchi,” and his men just appear, out of the shadows. So cool. He leaves Eun-soo in their care and chases Eum-ja down, but loses him in the end.

Ki Chul lights up with greedy anticipation of all the things he has yet to learn about heaven and the future, gleeful that it’s true. His brother asks if they should kidnap the doc, but the minion shrewdly says that guarantees nothing if she plans to lie. Ki Chul agrees that they need a way around that, and forces himself to calm down.

Hwasuin tends to Eum-ja, whose ear is bleeding from using his powers. She warns that he could lose it completely if he keeps doing that, but he just says that Ki Chul wanted to know, like a faithful puppy.

Hwasuin’s only interested in Choi Young, which puts Eum-ja in a bad mood. She says that Ki Chul is interested in collecting hearts, while she’s interested in collecting men. She wonders what Eum-ja is after. Hm, so do I.

Eun-soo goes to check on her young patient, who thanks her very politely for saving his life. She hesitantly asks his name, and he confirms it: “Yi Seong-gye.” He starts to describe his family and his father, and she answers for him: “House of Yi.”

Young sends Dae-man to check on the doc, but it’s a step too late. Eun-soo goes to her room to find Deoki held captive by Hwasuin. Who wants to be the one to tell her gagging a mute girl is kinda unnecessary?

She takes off her glove and puts a fiery hand on Deoki’s shoulder and asks the doctor to go on a walk with her. With no other choice, Eun-soo throws Deok-man off her trail, and heads out.

At the same time, Ki Chul goes to see the king, and Young gets called to the stateroom. He and Choong-seok flank the throne, and Ki Chul makes a point of asking if everyone on the king’s side has gathered.

He says he heard that Gongmin was collecting people and thinks it’s a smart idea, but he can’t just let it happen either. And then he takes out the scroll with a smile. Oh crap. And poor Choong-seok, who looks at it wide-eyed, knowing it was somehow his mistake. He gets a glare from his general.

Ki Chul asks why the king is bothering with these others, “when I am your person.” He admits one of his irreproachable faults is jealousy. Gong-min: “So?”

Ki Chul’s voice hardens, “So I don’t like those people on that list. I don’t want to let them live.” Yikes. Young draws his sword and puts it to Ki Chul’s throat, asking for the king’s word whether to let him live or die.

The king asks what he’s planning, since clearly he couldn’t have come here with so little regard for his life. Ki Chul just returns to his smiley self and says he’s got the doctor. Young looks behind him, and Deok-man and Dae-man stand there, heads hanging.

Eun-soo walks out of the palace with Hwasuin, and Eum-ja comes up with horses. She starts to protest, but then Hwasuin points ahead to a cage being wheeled by… and inside is Yi Seong-gye. Oh crap.

He screams for help and Eun-soo panics, asking what they’re doing with him. I start to panic that they’re far smarter than I had anticipated, but they didn’t capture him because of who he is—just that he was her patient and she’d want him to live.

So he’s their weapon: do as they say, or the boy dies.

Young says he could kill Ki Chul now, but the king tells him to put down his sword. Gongmin asks what it is that Ki Chul seeks. “Nothing. For you to do nothing.” Gongmin fumes, “You want me to be a puppet king?”

Ki Chul just says he wants Gongmin to be a king loved by his people. “Those on that list—they’re your people too, aren’t they? Give them up, and they get to live.”

And then we watch as one by one, Eum-ja assassinates the people on the king’s list. He leaves a note stuffed in their mouths. It’s curious that they bring Eun-soo along, but it must be to scare her into talking—to show her that Ki Chul’s threats aren’t idle.

Back at the palace, Ki Chul actually delights in telling them that it’s already begun, and the first three on the list should already be dead by now. Gongmin screeeeeams in a rage, but he’s backed into a corner, and Ki Chul knows it.

Young tells the king to buy more time and send him out to deal with it. He asks, “Can you do that?” Gongmin nods and braces himself, and Young marches out.

His men race ahead of him and find dead bodies in Eum-ja’s path. They dig the note out that he left: a phrase meaning, “If you know your mistakes, fix them.”

Eun-soo vomits and quakes in fear, and the baddies agree that she’s seen enough to know that they aren’t nice people. Hwasuin says it’s time for phase two, where Eun-soo chooses their next target.

He eyes widen. Hwasuin gives her the choice between: Princess Noguk, Jang Bin, and Choi Young.

“Of the three, who is the one you hold dearest? That person is our next phase. Who might it be?”

COMMENTS

I hope she’s smart enough to target Young, because at least if she sends them after the warrior, he has a chance of fighting them off. It does up the stakes for Eun-soo to know exactly how crazy Ki Chul is, since she clearly thought he was small beans enough for her to just wheel and deal her way around him. I’m already tired of the back-and-forth game of keep-away with Eun-soo though. I really thought we were in one place for a while, but apparently we’re just going to shuffle her back and forth which is senseless and starting to lose its punch.

The thing about this show is, it’s interesting—I’m always interested and I find the maneuvers clever and the characters witty—but it’s not exciting. And obviously every show can’t be heart-stopping, but it’s the kind of plot (conspiracy, intrigue) that you want to be a suspense-thriller. I desperately wish it were more exciting. But it takes great components and just… lets them lie there. Like a lump. It makes me sad.

I certainly enjoy the characters (the moments with Young and his aunt are always fantastic, as are any Woodalchi moments) and I feel like the time travel has finally gotten to an interesting place. It’s opening up all the right questions and making me really curious… but I’m not clawing at the screen for answers or feeling that thud in my heart when the revelations happen… even though I really really want to.

I thought it was very clever to bring Yi Seong-gye into the story, because he’s such a crucial figure in history, and we know at the mention of his name that he’s the one who brings about the downfall of pretty much our entire cast of characters. Normally what we’d expect is for Eun-soo to screw with history by traveling back in a time where she doesn’t belong, and that’s what she expects as well. But it starts to dawn on her that she’s unknowingly doing things that keep history on the correct course, which is even spookier. Because Yi Seong-gye can’t die. Who would found the nation of Joseon?

It opens up the world in a big way and I like where we’re going on a story level. But I still can’t believe she told Young that about the boy who would grow up to kill him. That was the dumbest thing she’s ever done. So far he hasn’t seen his face or learned his name, so that’s something, I guess. I just think that chance encounter was handled wrong—it would’ve been enough and plenty of dramatic weight for her to know and keep it to herself. And it would’ve been far more suspenseful for us to have him cross paths with the boy, neither of them knowing the fate to befall them. So epic, right? Sigh.

But so far the overarching mystery is taking a backseat to Ki Chul and Gongmin’s War of Hearts, and though I find that interesting on a cerebral level, it’s not gripping me entirely. I do think it’s much better in action—Gongmin leaving the palace to earn Suribang’s hearts, or Eum-ja slicing everyone on Gongmin’s list. I just feel like the story suffers any time we’re not with Young as the center, and I feel like he spent most of this episode in the sidelines or reacting to stuff, but not doing much about it. I sort of miss the days when they were on the run, because everything gets simpler when it’s life or death. He seems more contemplative and less Action Man, and well, I hate to say it, but I liked it better when he was flinging himself headlong into death. Not the death wish part, certainly, but the danger part. Less broody! More fighty!

I kept hearing about Dr. Jin but have never seen it. Are there any similarities story-wise besides a doc time travels to the past?

Okay, this has gotten me out of my "shy and silent reader" mode to make a few comments.
First, I must say that this is one great site, and thanks for the recaps of so many dramas. I should also thank you for fully making me a Kdrama addict, but not sure if I should also hold you responsible for the J,T and C dramas (will let you know when I've thought it through, okay?).
Could it be that this is the great plan to fight KC, you know, minimizing the number of casualties and/or innocent(??) lives lost ?
That the list was actually meant to be stolen because the people in the list were actually KC's (trusted??) men?
That the spies in the palace are being used to execute the plan?
Well, it may be wishful thinking on my part, but that is the only way I could make sense of all the shenanigans going on in the 'palace with no security and entrance fee". as well as the selective blindness inactivity of YC et al.

But, to be honest, our dear recently-afflicted-with the-Dr-Jin-trademark-diarrhea-of-the-mouth-syndrome Dr Eun Soo, completely stumps me with her sudden case of dimwittery (which could be attributed to the earlier mentioned Dr-Jin_whatchamacallit_syndrome).
If not these, then I sorrowfully have to agree with the others before me, that the writer(s) and/or the director(s) were just tired or something (for want of a polite way to say what I really, really feel).

PS: Please forgive all errors, spelling- and grammar-wise.

I kinda see what you mean and maybe some of it is possible. The list might have been part of the whole gamesmanship thing. But two maiden warriors got killed...so there is still some very iffy security in this palace. I don't think the king wanted his palace guards killed as part of the larger plot.

I feel Eun-Soo definitely should've kept her mouth shut. But yeah, the urge to talk when one is stressed is hard to overcome. Who knew there'd be a super-hearer around? Am not sure Eun-Soo or anyone in Wooldachi knew Eum-ja had that skill.

you have no simple mind. wow--you are about as shrewd as KC. i would never have thought that the list would be used to execute KC peeps. hats off to you for even devising such dark and twisted thoughts. makes me think that CY was strategizing-if it turns out this way. and that he got KC villains to kill KC peeps. WOW--that would be a eyeball popper!

good post!!!!!!

btw---glad you're adding to the blog.

Good point on that list! I remember the King said, while inking black dots next to those names, that by asking for loyalty from the listed people and giving them government posts, he essentially gives them tickets to the after-world. Maybe it was foreshadowing future events in this episode or maybe CY and King had greater plan. We'll see.

That would really surprise me bc the king and CY looked so shocked and devastated, when they found out. Not to mention the look CY gave 2nd in command when KC mentioned the scroll and threw it to Gongmin.

Episode 11 has a lot of explaining to do.

Thanks for the recap

I'm like you JB I find this drama more interesting than exciting. The planner was a surprise which suggest that she comes through the worm hole a second time or that she gives the planner to someone else so they can.but they come out a whole 1,000 years before she arrived.

I did think that at the very least ES could have explain to CY that it would be another 40+ years before LSG kills him, that might take away his desire to act on the information.

If anything, Young is a noble idiot. Not just a literal guy, but a noble idiot as well. It's obvious not because he could be your typical drama hero and that would be how he would be portrayed but, essentially, you could see that even if he knew -- Young would let the heavens (or history as we know it) run its course and he would die when his time come and he would probably even welcome it. I doubt he would do anything to stop his death or even does anything stupid like -- I don't know, kill the House of Yi before they could even take over Georyeo... Which is why I find this idea frustrating. If it was me, I think I will be kicking and screaming to avoid my death...

Thanks for the recap!

The final question from Lady Microwave Hand reminded me of when Fluteboy asked the Doc of the Hand Bag,
"Should I kill CY or not? If you say 'No,' I will. If you say 'Yes', I won't."

I don't really believe that the Dysfunctional Duo is going to act on her choice. Let's say ES picks Young. Suddenly he becomes vulnerable to them? And how much focus are they going to put in to killing him, because it's going to take a lot of misses before they can finally get through Wooldachi. Hmmm, now I see it: We get 14 episodes of the Coyote (and Brother) flipping through the Acme catalog for new ways to blow up the Roadrunner. I'd actually watch that...

There's something in storytelling called "The Missing Character." That's when a story totally forgets/ignores/doesn't realize an important person is missing from the plot. That's how I feel here. I'm venturing to say that the Missing Character is Gi Cheol's sister, the Empress of Yuan. I could be wrong but.....Somehow Gi Cheol walking around like a loose cannon with nothing pushing him, nothing holding him, nothing to constrain him...feels like a bullet outside of a gun or maybe like a bullet in a gun but no one firing it.

There would be a sense of weightiness, of epic power struggle, if we see his evil and his power and his authority coming from the Yuan, even if the Mings are on the horizon. Right now, he's just kinda being evil for evil's sake. The writers are aware that folks know history so they aren't putting into the story/plot what everyone else knows...which makes the power struggle feel light and flimsy and cartoony, like a toy tragedy.

That said, I do like the gamesmanship

I'm wondering if someone messed up history before and Eun Soo has to repair it.

I like that Dae-Mon is more than we know. But I have a feeling that there are so many things we don't know that the writers are just waiting to spring on us in a kind of "Look! Surprise!" kinda way. And that kind of storytelling --keeping your cards close to your chest in order to surprise folks-- is risky. Because you're trusting folks to keep watching until the hidden secret that validates everything comes. I'm willing to wait for it but...well.... Anyway, I AM glad that Dae-Mon has some hidden gifts. Maybe he's from a supernatural clan like Eum-Ja and Hwa-suin. Or maybe he's just learning how to use his chi. But there is more to that little runner/elfin creature than meets the eye.

Still very interested in Eum-Ja. Another instance of waiting around anticipating what minor characters have to do with the major plot.

I really really really like Eun-Soo. And Choi Young as well. But this show, the secondary characters stole all the great moments. Ahjumma, Ahjussi, Eum-ja, Dae-Mon, Jang Bin, Mole, and especially Lady Choi. It's good the plot gives everyone a chance to shine. Am not feeling the UST of the main characters yet and not feeling any strong pull to get OTP together. Am not feeling any great pull for anything right now. I know some might say that's boring to not be wanting anything to happen or to not be feeling some sort of "plot tug" but for me right now it's as if we're watching what unfolds because who knows what's gonna come next? So the story feels more like an "account" rather than like a plotted page-turner. Am happy with it either way. Happy viewing all.

The Yuan component was mentioned in Ep. 9, when Ki Chul told his minions to tell the Yuan entourage, who were waiting to see him or something, to wait. I think the show has alluded to that aspect, but not sure how it will unfold in future episodes. Somehow, I think that scene was placed there for a reason.

The component is still pretty faceless, though. That's what's bothersome. By himself Ki Chul is just not epic villainy. He's bad but almost comically so. I really want true evil here..and having the Big Bad's overlings off-screen does little to make me truly fear, truly hate, or truly feel desperate. Ki Chul's reasons for doing stuff -- to make his nation great-- isn't doing it for me. Nor do his desires to make himself great (if that's the reason.) HE seems to have a time element pressing at him, something he HAS to do before a certain time...but even that is being kept from us. With all that not knowing, it's hard to know why he feels pressured to do anything...or if he feels pressured to do anything. So I'm hoping they won't wait til the end to get all the info out. Very big mistake to confuse suspense with witholding important info.

I think KC is dying. He seems so obsessed with health - facial massages, herbal concoction and trembling hands. He keeps saying "so much to have or own in this world, but not enough time." That's one of the reasons he is so determined to have ES once he realizes that she's from heaven. Maybe he wants to go there to get cured or something.

Good observations and theory!

I wonder what KC and the Badshine Band think heaven is.

I understand he doesn't follow the belief you have to earn Heaven by doing good deeds all your life, but how well-guarded does he think the gates are?
Does he think there is good stuff lying around waiting for him to take it?

It's also fun to watch Young discuss Heaven with KC. Young's experience taught him that Heaven was strange, hostile, frightening and just as many people want to kill him there as in his own country. He's prolly thinking, "Go ahead, KC, why don't you waltz over there and grab a coupla cures and stuff. Yeah, that'll be no problem for you." Snicker snicker

SH......
You noticed the bad guy's trembling hand,
too? I wonder how important that little scene
will turn out to be, in future episodes?

I've read through all the comments so far
about Episode #10. Everybody seems so
unhappy with the plot-holes, etc, and
where this story seems to be going.....

The major opinion is that it's going around
in circles. So much so that there's (seriously)
none of the usual Lee Min-ho hairstyle or
Min-hot comments. Is "Faith" going down
in flames? I really hope not. :( :( :(

I'm off to watch #10 now.
Wish me luck. :(

I wonder. You're probably right. Wonder how he knows he's dying. They don't have MRI's and blood tests (okay, yeah, there's the whole centipede thing)...but how would he know? Unless he's seen someone else with the same (genetic) illness.

And why does he want to do so many things before he dies? To be great in heaven? To be famous on earth? Is there some super-spiritual reason behind all his villainy?
I like him a lot, which is a problem. I'm kinda wishing I could totally hate on him. But...ain't gonna happen. Even when the little girl was crying over her slain father (#3 on the list) I was only "kinda sad." It's like a toy tragedy and with toy villains. I really want to hate some baddie. Right now I'm feeling way too much tepidness. I'm still liking it though. And will hold on til the end. But still...

0

@jomo: Yeah, I thought that was a great conversation too. Show characteristic nature of both - one is greedy, always looking to collect "new toys"; the other is too loyal like a "dog". There were some great conversations in Ep. 10.

@Grace: I really enjoyed Ep. 10, but again I'm a bit biased because I like the show since the beginning, so I don't actively look for mistakes when watching the show.

My only complaint is not seeing enough LMH on screen :P

that whole scene with KC's hand is because....

KC got JINNED...only his eyes bugging out aren't as pronounced as Hand Towel's are. ;)

all's i'm saying is SURPRISE us, already. we can take a few surprises right about now. dunno why the writers are holding back to spring surprises on us.

if any of you followed last season's "SING OFF", the group that won the contest ALWAYS gave the audience a surprise, right? every.single.performance.there.was.a.surprise.

with as rich a story as this coupled with great actors, why aren't we getting surprised ALL THE FLIPPIN TIME? huh, show? why?

Thanks GF for the recap! I agree with regard to the lack of intensity in this episode. But I disagree on this part:

I just think that chance encounter was handled wrong—it would’ve been enough and plenty of dramatic weight for her to know and keep it to herself. And it would’ve been far more suspenseful for us to have him cross paths with the boy, neither of them knowing the fate to befall them. So epic, right? Sigh.

I'm not sure if adding this scene would add much to the story since I'm guessing Lee Sung-gye is not going to feature prominently in the show. And this show has enough on its plate with king wants to be rightful king, a lord trying counter the king's plan, time-travel, love stories, etc... Adding a scene you described above will probably just overwhelm the plot too much. Or maybe, we'll have later episodes for these kind of encounters. Based on past episodes, I think this episode is a set-up for a lot of things to come in the future. I hope I don't have to eat my words :)

I'm okay with the spy component in this episode. We already know from Ep. 9 that there are spies everywhere from everyone. King is trying to eliminate them, but he has no money, so he has to take a more gradual approach to rid this and larger problems. To paraphrase what King told the Manbo siblings, should he take the easy and quick road by shedding more blood and thus consolidating his power this way, or should he be more humane with his subjects even if it means he'll get there slowly? Though this conservation is not relating to the spy aspect, it gives us some insights into the king's thought process. I interpret this statement as if he go all out against Ki Chul - i.e. ridding the baddies and those spies immediately, which he doesn't know who they are yet, he might spill more innocent blood in the process. That's how I logically convince myself with this spy story ;)

This is probably the first time I'm annoyed at Eun-soo , not when she told Choi Young about that boy, but it was at the beginning when she started yelling and throwing things at Ki Chul. I didn't like the acting in that scene; it was too hysterical and over the top. It also sets the tone for how she reacts throughout the episode.

Overall, an interesting but not exciting episode. Things are getting too complicated.

I don’t know where to begin. This drama held so much promise but it’s now veering towards boring_land. Sigh.

I wanted to give EunSoo’s character a chance but alas, she’s turning out to be a real disappointment. She’s the central figure in this drama but I see no depth in her character. She could have been this great doctor who witnessed and became part of history. But instead, I see this whiney, ditzy, dumb, childish person who acted like she’s 33 going on 13. Gee whiz luiz, it’s now Ep 10 and she’s still thinking she’s in a dream??? Heller? The inconsistency in her character gave me the impression of someone with two personalities. On one hand, she’s this quiet doctor handling emergencies with swift efficiency and then she’s reverting back to her childish persona, mouthing English that I find just too cheesy and corny (could be writer’s fault or one of KHS’s attempts at ad libbing that she mentioned in the press conference.) Instead of being smart about her situation, she’s being pretty stupid. As for her romance with the general, I’m sure I’ll upset a lot of people but here it is. She looked too old for the general and I saw no chemistry. Now I said it. OK, you can now boo, throw the eggs and tomatoes. Just to be clear, I am not against an older actress and a much younger co-star. Age had nothing to do with it but more of chemistry. Kim Sun Ah had always been paired with much younger actors. Case in point was her latest drama I Do, I Do but somehow she made it work. Recently, I also watched a movie starring Selma Hayek and Colin Farrell (Selma’s 10 years older than Colin same age difference as KHS and LMH) but they were just so hot onscreen I had to fan myself.

On the positive side, LMH’s one good actor and it did not hurt that he’s a real hottie and eye candy. If I had my way, I’ll definitely pair him with Park Se Young as the doctor instead of KHS. Their scenes together were just oozing with chemistry. Right now, I’m vested in the story of the King and Queen more than our main otp. RDH and PSY did an awesome job in portraying their characters. They’re the most interesting apart from CY.

The Wu Dal Chi are rather careless in this episode, losing the citizens list, not keeping tabs on Eun Soo, not being forceful warriors in character and fight, I don't just don't know about the lot of them in this episode. Even Choi Young is scattered. It is a revealing moment when Lady Choi, the eyes and ears of the palace, tells the chilling story of Gi Cheol's cruelty and power. Boo, hiss! The evil ones in this episode are ruthless to the bone and finally get to Eun Soo. I am hoping for a great rally by the good guys, c'mon, show us your stuff! No more "Let's talk it through, work things out." You can't do that when it is one-sided and the other side plays dirty to the rotten core.
I agree, this wasn't the most exciting episode, but what is the next twist in the realm of time travel, who Eun Soo really is, and what is she doing there, and where will she go next? And, who will go with her???

I´m quite disappointed with so many harsh and judgmental comments here. Would I write some different ideas, different story? Maybe. People are like "wow, it was clever to put this or that here" because they were surprised by writer’s idea but then the same people go like "I want this to happened, how the writer can do it differently" like a little kid. I have no idea how the story will progress so I take what I get. I also find some moments really questionable or illogical or even out of place but calling it "lazy writing" seem pretty unfair. It’s someone else’s story, not mine. I think the writer did pretty good job so far. It’s a different when it comes to some camera, lighting or other technical things, I’m not thrilled about the camera at all, and the sound too. Do they have three different teams? It looks like that.
It´s easy to comment how stupid some character’s actions are but we actually see a whole picture, we see all those interactions between bad and good guys, we know better than them what motives, dreams or secrets those characters around them have. It’s like a horror movie - "don´t go there, he´s waiting just around the corner, are you stupid or what?". You know what I mean, right?
I wasn´t pleased with ES´s jabbering today but I can understand that too. She was living her simple life in Seoul and now she´s in the past, surrounded by warriors who think nothing of killing people (don´t forget she´s a doctor, someone who saves people, totally opposite perspective about life), and dudes with supernatural powers who kill with fire and sound, she just discovered there´s her diary from hundreds of years ago she has no idea about and people around her play games with her life. And she saved a kid only to realize later that the same kid is someone who will kill someone she knows. If it isn’t shocking or scary .... I would be probably scared and shocked as well. I talk aloud when I need to assure myself that something makes sense, she probably just needs to confirm she’s not crazy, make some sense out of all those strange things around her. And she makes an effort to understand and she is also aware of that simple fact she cannot mess up with history, but I think it´s too much for her to take right now. There isn´t anyone she can talk to, in fact, she is actually alone in this because people around her believe in heaven and use of some magic powers while she´s just ordinary 21st century pragmatic woman.
I also wouldn´t be so harsh about their poor security/secret agents operations. It´s a drama where a woman fried a guy through her touch and some dude can hear what you whisper in your wife´s ear while sitting in a night club. What they should do? Built some soundproof doors? I´m not really sure what kind of security you need against x-men.
I would also like the show quicken its pace but the show is scheduled to have 24 episodes, right? That´s why it´s better to wait until the whole show is over, you can watch a whole show in couple of days than. I actually realized that waiting for a new episode made me frustrated and I usually ended up blaming the show for it despite me just being simply impatient.
So I don´t give up until something totally stupid happens. Remember Warrior Baek Dong Soo? I really liked the show despite all it’s flaws until the very last episode (which I simply erased from my memory), I hope nothing like this happens during next 12 episodes.
PS: please, excuse my grammar. Thank you.

very intersting .till ep 9 i have the same thinking about ES but what make me not happy not that what she doing ,cause i understyand her and what she suffering right now i even say before i dont balme her even if she make a mistake that will chang history , but even so the going back on this ep didnt suite her and dont go with what she was on the last ep ( ep 9) they make her going back its like feeling that the order of thing has been mess with. and that make our understand her and her doing till now feel wrong and i know she need time, she have the righ to act crazy on that crazy life but she really have to start to accept the fact that she doing wrong and to stop blame everything on the other to escape the pain then she will start to konw to stop doing wrong cause its really going to be her doing .that scary think to do and i feel bad for her but she has to do that ,and i think she will start now she see that people death is cause her action and that she can't just do nothing and see people death and just think about going back to her world , now she cant escape anymore and if they make her really understand that next ep i will say they have point and not just back on the same things every time.

I think when it comes to judging a drama, we judge dramas that we really love or dramas we really hate. The judgment going on with Faith is mostly by folks who are so involved. I know that's what's going on with me and how i feel. It's because I'm so involved that I'm wondering uhmmm...two female guards go missing and no one notices? Uhmmmm..why are they not telling us what Ki Chul's issue is?

I, for one, am not gonna give up on Faith. It is taking time to show the world, to show all the characters, to not jump into a paint-by-numbers love affair. All that is working in its favor as far as I'm concerned.

The only dramas I give up on are those that are recycling cliches and those that have tons of lost mothers and big chaebols all coincidentally crossing paths. So far, Faith is "interesting" as recapper said. I could watch it forever. It just isn't touching my soul on any real deep level yet. And so I'm glad there is the whole time-puzzle factor. That's where my passion is: how is this time-puzzle going to work itself out?

great post. totally with you on by-passing the recycled cliche dramas of ditzy-emo women and chaebol silver spooned crap!

this drama is engaging. and this episode pissed us all off because of the editors kept filling our story with recycled scenes: Flute Boy on a Roof over here-wait-now he's back and over there. Fire Chick popping up wherever she wants even though popping up is not her power. ES ping-ponging. Gongmin clueless. Guard chicks sliced open on the palace walkways and no one says boo about it.

i declare a soju free week so that the editors sober up and give us scenes that were prolly filmed but are now laying on the cutting floor.

I'm still loving this drama, but god, I want it to be BETTER. It has so much promise that it's just... failing to live up to.

I think the thing that's bothering me most is shitty-palace-security-as-plot-device. Seriously, how many times in this episode alone did we see baddies spying from the rooftops? It'd be one thing if the good guys were trying to close the gaps and still getting one-upped, but a lone mention of clearing out the palace moles and then nothing? Ugh. If it's not part of some bigger plan on their part I am going to gnaw off my own hands in frustration.

I can see the need to keep shuffling Eun-soo around - it keeps her engaged with all the plot lines - but GF is absolutely right: after a certain point, it loses all of its impact. I just don't feel the stakes being raised anymore. Even now, when she's with firehands and anime hair who've just killed people RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER, I'm not overly concerned about what'll happen next. That could maybe be salvaged with directing that isn't frankly godawful, but I've pretty much given up on that score.

ok show, enough already.

when a pawn is taken - the rules are: you remove pawn from the board. stop with the ES back and forth--NONE OF US are digging it. mkay?

and furthermore, CY, although young for a general by USA standards, needs to ORGANIZE like a general, otherwise, don't be giving him that title. its confusing and disrespectful of the title.

a serious "come to Buddha" talk needs to occur, cuz too much of nothing is going on. (see that's funny, because Buddhism was the state religion BEFRORE yi song gye replaced it w/ neo-confuciasm.)

unlike most, i'm glad ES blurted out CY's future demise. here's why:
1- it bolsters CY's 'faith' in trusting ES and 'future-speak' as well, as bolstering ES's awareness of events that coursed history. she knows the importance of 'not messing' with things and sees that she is (actually) helping the course of history 'as she knows it'. but even she says that history is not her forte, so CY and Gongnim really need to tap into her future-speak, asap and do some serious organizing. start with palace security for one, just to mention the obvious.

2-know thy enemy. keep your friends close your enemies closer. this is a HUGE advantage for CY and for ES. both of them want to protect the other--now ES has a better understanding of how to protect CY. and, CY now has a clearer understanding of the players. this is good, no?

3-opens up the storyline. let's face it, ES as a ping-pong ball is getting boring. and the evil baddies are even getting boring. Flute Boy didn't put an ounce of acting, effort or charisma into his kill scenes. Flute Boy is boring. Fire Chick, yawn. yawn yawn yawn.

so hurray for ES blurting out the future killer of CY. stir some shit up and serve it! lets see something happen besides ping-pong! mkay?

The plot is killing me. I'm going against the whole dramabeans by saying this, "LMH character/acting bore me to tears" I'm actually enjoy the villain more, and I honestly love ES, she makes my laugh soo much. She's the life of the drama. ^^

Their trying to do so much with the plot that it kills the story line. I've not yet been impressed by this plot at all. After watching Tree With Deep Roots my standards for historical drama is at an all time high. Now that was a show that will have you on the edge of a cliff.

Another problem I'm having is, how does no one suspect that their might be a bug in the palace? why is so easy to access?

I've been holding myself back from Fast Forwarding, but I break in this episode, I was only about to watch 25 min. Surely an disappointment, but will try next week episode to see how i feel.

This is kind of an introspective episode, where Choi Young and the King does most of the introspective part and Ki-Chul and his men do most of the actions.

And it kinda saddens me that one of the Woodalchi guys is a traitor, although it does make sense to put a mole amongst the King's guards.

This is becoming more of Eun Soo and Goryeo's story, rather than Choi Young's or the King's. Well, the title suggested that but it won't hurt to have some action scenes in there. Action speaks louder than words, you know.

Again, thanks Javabeans for such a great recap. You are truly one of a kind.

Sorry if I sound like a Faith apologist, but I don't really see any problems with this palace security/spies/time and space in this episode. I went back to re-watch Ep. 10 and found in chronological order:
-----------------------------------
Prior to Episode 10 , we know:

--King doesn't have a large loyal following. Remember, even at the inn, King and Queen have to stay in the same room for security reasons.
--Security is pretty lax in the palace even before King arrives at the palace - remember KC's men killing those counselors in the Palace, which suggests that he has the backing of most security guards.
--King arrives, and from what CY tells the King, they don't have enough men to guard this huge place. Lady Choi has to recruit female guards to protect the Queen.
--We can assume the Herbal place is in or near the palace, but since the show has established the lack security to protect the king, how can they have more guards to protect the medicine wing of the palace? Wouldn't it be more ridiculous if that wing is more secured than the king's court?

-------------------------------------------
Episode 10 in chronological order

Day 1:

--CY and King talk about whom to court for loyalty. They mention some names and something about the order is almost like a ticket to the "after-world"
--CY gets the scroll, but hands it to Daeman to give to his second in command because he has to go visit ES at her place
--The second in command walks with Daeman and notices some parts of the palace are not guarded enough.
--The second in command yells at one of the Wooldachis standing on the side about this, then spy girl walks in and pretends to fall, takes the scroll, receives a glance from that wooldalchi.
That scene should give us further indication that the palace is not secured and maybe there's a spy among the wooldachis as well. The assistant general loses the scroll, but keep in mind, he receives the scroll from Daeman, who has problems formulating cohesive sentences - recall him trying to memorize key words like dots, whereabouts, etc... From this, we can assume, that the assistant general maybe doesn't guard this task carefully.

------------------------------
About spy girl killing the two guards - that happens on the same day that Ki Chul goes to see the king. This is what happens in sequential order:

Day 2 (next day)
--Spy girl kills two guards. Assuming she hides the bodies afterward.
--Fluteboy gets on the rooftop, opens his sensitive ears and listens to the conversation.
--While this is happening, CY learns that Fluteboy has super sensitive listening skills. He goes immediately to the Queen's court to warn ES.
--CY and ES talk then CY notices someone on the roof. CY runs after him.
--Fluteboy reports what he's found to KC. KC seems happy then talks about the need to take the Doc back. From this conversation, we can deduce that Fluteboy and Glovelady have to take care of people on the list.
--Glovelady cleans Fluteboy ear, then she leaves only for her to show up at the medicine wing to take the Doc somewhere. At the same time, we see Doc coming back from the Queen Court, goes to see the young boy, then to her room, only to find the Glovelady. Meanwhile...
--KC goes to the palace to see the King. CY hears about it and goes see the king.
--King, KC, CY talk for how long we don't know. While at the same time...
--Glovelady, Fluteboy and with ES as an audience go on a killing spree.
--The wooldachis arrive at the crime scene too late.

The duration from the murder of the two female guards to the end of the episode occurs on the same day; maybe this whole thing lasts about a few hours. Coupled this with what know of the lax security and perhaps a traitor within the wooldachis, I think that should give us enough reasons to believe what happens in this episode.

Also about Doekman not investigating Fluteboy listening to the conversation: 1) Why should he? He doesn't seem like a smart type to do that 2) it's a medicine wing with patients come and go. It's not a private court. 3) Fluteboy sits from afar listening to ES and Dr. Jang. Not like he presses his ear against the wall.

In my opinion, I don't see anything wrong with the time and space explanation. The show even tells us through multiple scenes that the palace has spies and not safely guarded. Maybe the editing leaves viewers confused with too many rapidly changing scenes.

@SH, Doekman also thought fluteboy was asleep. Tbh, him just sitting on the roof looking like he is sleeping, not in earshot (for a regular human being), of any important information, wouldn't alarm Doekman. Like you already pointed out DM isn't smart at all.

You make good points. I was pissed at the episode at first. But now that time has passed, it wasn't half as bad as I thought.

I agree that you did a great job proving your case. I'd like to believe, however, that the Woodalchi guy suspected (by some viewers) to be a spy is just a guy who is easily distracted by girls and can't sniff out a rat through his flirtations. Remember he was being all flirty with the first girl spy who tried to kill the queen in an early epi (2?).

Sadly, I wasn't as invested in this episode as I was in the previous nine. The main reason being, I am not Korean and don't really get all the history that's being thrown at us. Like I had no idea who Yi Seong-gye. Now I do. But he kills Choi Young? I thought Choi Young lived to be an old man? Isn't that what Eun-soo said in a previous episode? Does he become an old man to die by a younger man's hand? And what happens to Gongmin and Noguk? I don't want anything to happen to them! This is one thing I don't like about historical dramas that deal with characters who were real and met sad endings. I grow attached to the characters and then they die. Sucks.....

Anyway, I like the idea that Eun-soo is actually keeping history on track. But I wish she'd stop talking about the future so much. Everything she says can actually not happen with Eum-ja around. His super-hearing is a pain in the butt.

Now, I have to wait until next week.

Thanks for the recap, Girlfriday!

Ok, I never learned the game of chess and stink at checkers. I know that there is a lot of thinking and a lot of back and forth. Ok, so the doctor is the pawn, not a queen (chess related) and to our utter dismay, being dragged back and forth like a drunk on a titter-totter. From reading the other posts, I apparently am not the only one getting queasy here with the motions.

Buttttt . . . . does any one but me think Ki Chul is going crackers, and we really know he is, but didn’t he seem to spazz out in some of his scenes?? Especially when he was zoned in on the diary and how he could get dtr back, and what it would mean for/to him?? Everyone else is trying to help him, and he is just in his own little sphere? Yes, he is trying to rule the world, or the corner that he is in, and extend outwards from there. I wonder though if the writers will have him go totally crackers, or his minions think he is/has and wander off on their on after realizing this.

Any thoughts . . . . . .

History is always a boring subject. Faith is doing a great job in keeping my interest. I don't see it as a love story. Never have I been so interested in every character in a drama. At first there were a lot of comments about age difference and I look at the lead next to LMH and she looks young. They look good together, she looks good next to KC as well. Now there are a lot of comments about being bored and the 'pace', I think history moves slowly but also only days have passed.
Why are you hoping for a different ending? History is done. Young dies. KC and his family die. Gongnim eventually dies. Queen Noguk dies giving birth. This drama is just a story of those times and I don't think the writers would mess with the outcome. My only problem with Faith is Eun Soo is pretty dumb for a doctor, but I am sure medical students only study medicine and not math or history. I enjoy reading this blog but sometimes don't understand all the negativity.

The things that were cool about this drama are rapidly fading behind a stupid script and directing. Are the Woodalchi great warriors...or Idiots? The Evil Threesome come and go to the Palace as they please. Really? Place Mole lady has not been detected by Lady Choi? Really? Really unbelievable. A Fantasy can revel in fantastical elements, BUT they have to be consistent - here they are not - Powerful Woodalchi, become blithering idiots -not consistent and not believable. Lady Choi not knowing about the Mole-lady? Not consistent with her character. The only consistent thing has been that the doctor Eun Soo is an annoying twit that can do good surgery.

What a Waste......

Powerful Woodalchi

When has this show ever said about the Woodalchi being all powerful? Are you confusing it with the Red Moon group - which was powerful and magical, but even they also ceased to exist.

The Evil Threesome come and go to the Palace as they please. Really?

I've already answered this question a few times. King has little power. Show opens in Year 1351 (the beginning of his reign). Prior to his ascending to the throne, the country was (and still is) in turmoil, in Yuan control (KC is the brother of the all powerful Empress of Yuan), his subjects didn't have faith in the throne. Who control the country? KC and his people. This show tells us this more than once. Security is lax; it gives us more than enough hints on that part.

Think of it this way: In Ep. 9, the plan was set in motion to earn loyalty from the people and rid the spies, but we only saw the plan, not actions. If in Ep. 10, we saw King eliminating the lady spy and incompetent guards, while dealing with KC, earning people trust etc..., critics would say, "show is unrealistic, how can they do all these at once, blah...what a waste"

Lady Choi not knowing about the Mole-lady? Not consistent with her character.

Is Lady Choi god or human? Her job is to take care of the Queen, helping King, advising CY and on top of that managing her people. It will take her time to know about the spy girl.

The only consistent thing has been that the doctor Eun Soo is an annoying twit that can do good surgery.

The doctor should be what then? Please tell me how to better this character. Should she be smart, has hindsight benefits, can't put a foot wrong anywhere? She's from "heaven," so she should have godly characteristics, right? Perfect for every viewer. Not like the sometimes annoying human being that we've encountered in real life?

Totally agree with your last point about doctors! I am just amazed at how people expect her to be superhumanly perfect just because she is a doctor. Can't doctors whine and be irritating? Can they make no mistake (the non-medical part)?

I like that this episode gives the appearance that Eun Soo's presence is aligning history instead of wreaking havoc. Nice.

Other than the pretty of LMH and Flute Boy, and the lovely mirroring of General Choi and Lady Choi's body language, this episode has major issues. Stupid stuff like gagging a mute girl, wtf? Bad, bad editing, as if they simple had really bad filming and no way or no time to reshoot. I came away thinking they punted with this episode. The continuity issue or unnecessary emphasis on the dropping of the handbag was perhaps just a victim of editing, who knows. The writing made no sense either. Why is the traitor warrior girl getting away with the killing of the other warrior girls? Duh. I was expecting the lax security and the spy girl being able to succeed -it all to be a set up plot by the king and Choi to dupe the baddies, but that does not appear the case. Shame on you writers and directors. Get it together.

I can deal with not having nail biting moments in an episode, but after two decent episodes, this one was a real mess.

And come on Eun Soo, call Choi Psycho, we gotta have that.

lol on that mute girl part; I didn't notice that. But show didn't end on ep. 10, so we don't need everything to happen all at once. Though, I agree with you with regard to the pacing of the show, it lacked intensity and suspense at times.

I think there is a miscommunication somewhere. I did not comment that the episode lacked movement or anything needed to happen. I said it had issues, and it did. I did not say it lacked intensity and suspense. I said that it was messy in writing/directing/editing, and it was, in contrast to the previous two episodes, which were good.

@Mar - Sorry I misinterpreted your comment. In my head, when you mentioned bad editing, continuity issue or unnecessary emphasis, I took those as bad directing, editing or uneven pacing of the show, which kind of ruin my viewing experience as well. SH- :) like I said, miscommunication, whether in communicating or interpretation, and I can own up to blame if I did not communicate my thoughts properly. I'm not a Faith hater, I'm enjoying the show, just a serial crit analysis compulsion in my blood haha. I usually do pros and cons in any commentary, but didn't do much pro on this one. I almost feel like the filming of that episode was messed up and stuff got edited out that would have made the story seem more cohesive. IDK, just felt weird.

I am still loving this drama. For one, I really want to watch something that doesn't wholly revolve around romantic love, and explore more on other human emotions like frustration, desire, evilness, faith and hope. With LMH in there, I totally appreciate that the show is not exploiting his pretty boy looks by making him look like that: a romantic pretty boy.

Second, I understand ES. Yes, she is a doctor but I think people here are trying to stereotype doctors by saying she can't be whiny or clueless. I personally know doctors and lawyers who are as human as human can get - they're not afraid to make a fool of themselves, they cry over movies, gush over babies, get depressed over a breakup, they get frustrated for not getting a job well done, etc. Doctors are smart - that's a fact. But that doesn't mean they're uptight and living life like stones.

There are some questionable moments. I get that. (lax security, unnoticed slain lady guards, etc.)

Those who don't appreciate it and those who are bored out of their wits with the storytelling style of Faith probably aren't fond of reading books. I've read somewhere in previous comments that Faith is like a book. I agree. Just look how rich the dialogues are and how each episode are turning like pages. But I can't blame mainstream television viewers for complaining. Let's just enjoy because I have a feeling that the next half will be full of revelations. A little patience, people. =)

In this drama, they have some interesting bizarre characters with super powers:
Choi Young - electricity
Eunja - magic death flute and super hearing
Hwasuin - Lady Microwave with power of fire
Dae-man - Speed and acrobatic prowess
They are like the X-Men or the Fantastic Four of Goryeo. I wish they would explain their background more and about how they form their alliance with either Choi Young or Ki Chul. I also wonder how they obtain their super powers instead of them just zapping people...

I am so irritated by ES in this episode. She made some stupid decisions that will cost many people's lives. When she was being stubborn and telling CY about the boy that will one day grow up to kill him, I just wanted to slap her. I was that furious with ES. By the end of the episode, when ES had her head down and was crying because the bad guys made her watch them kill those innocent people, I just wanted to kick her in the face!
I know that she is the victim here because she was kidnapped to this world. But still, that doesn't justify her actions. She begged CY not to die because without him she doesn't know what to do. Now that he is not going to die and is a general protecting her, she is telling him not to protect her anymore and saying good-bye? That's so selfish of her!!!
Damn you, ES!!!!

Wow, Faith really gets me going...I lurk for two years and now post twice on this show alone.

I LOVE that ES told CY that she inadvertently saved the man destined to kill him. I found NO fault with her in that regard. Why? She's closest to CY in that he's her protector, and let's face it--girl's got some unresolved, attraction-denial issues going on. If I were in her shoes, I'd do the same damn thing, because it WOULD kill me to keep it in.

Second, she clearly states, "I have been trying to avoid altering history since I've been here." And what? This has caused her to ensure history unfolds as it should. But her telling Choi Young about his would-be slayer is the FIRST time she's done something heedlessly; history be damned! This means she may have altered history as she knows it for once. And that alteration may spare Choi Young his life toward the end of the drama.

This is what I hope. I do not want a slain LMH on my screen, and I hope that this one slip, this one time she blurts the truth--this is the time that it pays off for the viewer, and Choi Young is able to escape his fate in some way.

And I'm aware that Choi Young is destined to die an old man and that may not have aired on my screen anyway.

BUT if she goes back to the future and reads a history book, simply stating he did not die, or if he's somehow able to get to her due to some space-time continuum or wormhole or whatever...if she in any way can sweep him away from a future death---girl's ok in my book.

My thoughts on this Hwa-ta...
Didnt Ki chul say that his teacher gave him the same medical equipment that eun soo has? and the teacher explained that it belonged to hwa-ta?

i think i am more curious about this teacher! the teacher cant be eunsoo cos ki chul would recognise her. is it possible this teacher knows eunsoo very well, thats what this teacher has eunsoo's diary?? also if the diary's 1000 years old...why hasnt it disintegrate?

Yeah, she probably should have whispered it instead of screaming tho so Flute Boy wouldn't have heard.

I feel that this drama is starting to go down hill. I have not watched much of Kim Hee Sun's dramas because I am not a big fan of hers. So seriously, the only reason why I am watching this drama is because of Lee Min Ho! Period!!!
But, I am upset that I don't see that much of a growth in CY (aside from his new hairstyle). I want to see him grow stronger in many ways including his feelings for ES. I also want to see the same thing happen to ES as well.
I'm upset that this is already episode 10, yet there isn't that much of development betwen ES and CY's romance. I know that ES has feelings for CY that's why she was cutting him off because she doesn't want him to get hurt because of her. She also knows that once she finds a way back, she will not see him anymore so she wants to ease that pain of seperation between them. I also can see that CY cares a lot about ES because he is always trying to protect her even if it means that she will get mad at him.
However, their romance is not developing that fast so I can't see how this will become a "love story [that] spans centuries" (Dramawiki, 2012).

The producers better not give us a short romance because I will be very mad. I am expecting more from this drama. I have high expectations for this drama because the director and screenwriter did so well with The Legend. Don't tell me they are going down hill now.

This episode had lots of flaws and what's with woodalchi?!? Why are they this incapable?!? If they had just shown couple of scenes on how capable they are and yet ki chul's baddies came in, then that would have been nice!

But this episode is the one that made me sit up with head confused and a pit in my stomach realising how complicated the story is!!! What is for our characters?!?

Choi young, king queen, it's gonna be like some great fall of one kingdom, like end of an era!!

And finally even with wholes all over, this is one week where I will be counting days to next episode!
Yeah this drama is lacking and not perfect, but I do love the world and characters and am with them till the end!

I don't see why everyone's jumping on the Doc about not shutting up. Why couldn't CY just put his hand over her mouth and whisper to her that people could be listening? How hard is that?

Also, I'm not sure what the diary signifies, but I don't think Eun Soo is Hwa Ta. The surgical tools that were said to be left by Hwa Ta looked more old fashioned than the ones Eun Soo brought back from the future. Where would she have gotten them? Unless when she finally makes it through Heaven's door again she begins to time travel randomly back and forth through time.

Does anyone else think that Gi Cheol's intense interest in Eun Soo and Hwa Ta has something to do with that shooting pain he got in his hand in the last episode?

I'm still in at this point. There is a lot going on in real time and I am curious how the time travel aspect will play out with Eun Soo. She is a love/hate character by fans, it seems. I'm a total love fan- she rocks the show and keeps the waters stirred. It really is all about her at this point, and I love her whack personality and back at'cha talk. Choi Young must have something up his sleeve (pleeze???), although I am miffed that the Wu Dal Chi made so many careless mistakes and can't even keep track of ES and lose the registry list. C'mon boys, how did this ragtag band of warriors make it this far in life, anyway? I am disappointed that they are not tighter. Even CY's resolve is slipping. My heart sank when Lady Choi (after telling the gruesome story of Gi Cheol's cruelty and power to make her point) asked him if he can handle what he has had part in making happen, and he stares off, recognizing his limits. SIGH! What is missing so far is a real love scene and the writers are making us wait a long time for that. But I have FAITH in this episode - characters, actors, plot, twists, story line, don't disappoint us! P.S. White Hair, just seeing you puts me in a bad mood, too.

I am impatient for the love story between CY and ES to develop too, but remember the kdrama formula for romance; the real relationship doesn't develop until midway through the drama episodes, so that means episode 12.

Everyone seems to rant over the security and guarding issues over our heroes in this drama (Faith). The dead lady guards scene also seems to be an issue since the show didn't let us see how they clean the dead corpse. Ok just browse to post 74 by SH to answer your question in chronological order. :P

OK faith is fantasy so i dig how supernatural elements is there on this show. So everybody wants to kill Ki Chul to end the drama right? Did we forget that Ki Chul can turn everyone into ice and his just holding back? Ki Chul thinks everyone is like a coackroach that can be squished easily. He can kill everyone except Cho young with or without his minion but he didn't want that because he wants peoples hearts to follow him and fulfill his unsaid ambition (King maybe?). Everyone seems to belittle Ki Chul powers lol.

I like faith action scene (powers) even with the silly CGI's but i dig it since its fantasy. But everyone forgot to rant over Bridal Mask supernatural Karate. The show (Bridal Mask) only tells us that Shunji was his only teacher but his superior to everyone else? How funny is that? Supernatural Dodging bullets? Also that show portrays Japanese to be weak in security but thats absurd! Just watched the movie flowers of war (2011), warriors of the rainbow (2011), my way (2011), etc Those shows i mentioned portrays how powerful and fearful Japan was before but Bridal Mask tells us that Japanese are incapable of handling guns and killing just by a mere Karate heroes jumping and dodging seems laughable and unreal but i did love the story thou but hate the action(gun dodging) but not the sword scene which i love.

Take note Japan was defeated by USA by dropping Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasake, after that Japanese high command surrendered.

What i meant was this show (Faith) has a fearful and powerful villains (ice man, fire girl, music man) compare to the Gaksital that everyone loves. Bridal Mask is biased! Almost all scene shows that Japanese are weak and lousy which are not true if you read the history of there cruelty and power. I wasn't afraid everytime Bridal Mask is on the edge of dying since i know he will get a way with it anyway. Supernatural dodging bullets and running (horse riding) while police guards just watched and didn't pull the trigger(gun) is so absurd.

I'm with the people that found this episode annoying, especially after ep. 9 which felt like a step forward and now I feel like we took 2 steps back.

Just when I feel like Team Young and King is making some headway, they get slapped down.

But what annoys me more is the how... the lack of security, how easily KC's people can get in and out of the palace, KC's pledge brothers and sisters all knowing, all seeing, all hearing... it all just feels so contrived and convenient. Like how ES is conveniently having this conversation of manipulating KC to her purpose. How that fire girl sees the king meet the whatever secretive people who are supposedly hard to spot/catch/etc.

Then ES who hasn't annoyed me yet has finallly annoyed me when she just couldn't shut up and kept blabbing on and on when she knows that KC is bad.

I finally get GF or was it JB's comment about how they wanted Faith to be Epic and it just always falls short of that.

Cliffhanger should have been when ES finds out she saved the king that will kill CY.

I'm sticking around because I am a FAITHful fan!!!

"I sort of miss the days when they were on the run, because everything gets simpler when it’s life or death."

I miss those days too. They were what made me like this drama. I know that when they were running, the scope of the drama was smaller, but the two main leads were the focus of the story and I am way more interested in the personal interactions anyway.
All I have to do is google and I can find out what ultimately happens with the villain. He's not going to win, especially if it's Eun Soo's presence that makes history what it is in this show. So the tension between the villain and Gongmin doesn't really resonate with me.

Ki Chul is eh. I get such weird vibes from him, and they're not exactly evil. Maybe it's because he's such a good strategist? The only real mystery about him is what sickness he has, which was alluded to in a previous episode.

I hope the focus of the next episode is on Choi Young b/c I miss watching him in action, and I know the show can't have uncovered all of his layers already. Come back, mystery! Return, narrative tension!

I really thought you drama addicts should write your dramas and see if it sells!

some of us prefer to take our time enjoying the pace! of this drama.

Its like we cant enjoy recaps and finding some worthwhile comments without the hard knocks!

I tried reading some insightful positives, but there are so many negatives....
I dont share those negative sentiments as much as some of you!...its not even half way yet and you want the main lead characters to fullfil your next step desires quickly!....
let them evolve like some really true life stories....

The palace guards are laxed. But that might be all.

Ok please write as you like , I hope more quiet ones will speak up to the negatives here...
