Lee Jong-seok cast in Drama Special
by javabeans
Aw, my favorite member from the High Kick 3 crew Lee Jong-seok (my favorite character, at least; I think Park Ha-sun wins for favorite cast member overall) has been cast in his next project, which will be a short Drama Special episode called When I Was Prettiest.
My immediate response is to make a quip about flower boys and winking at the audience, but reading on I see it’s about a girl who’s sick (the one who remembers feeling pretty, I presume) and now I feel bad. Hey, is it my fault for thinking the obvious thing?
Looks like this’ll be set at university (I love campus stories), with Lee Jong-seok playing a campus heartthrob and engineering major who captures the fancies of all the girls. When his girlfriend falls ill, he nurses her… but meets a new girl, and falls in love.
Billed as a coming of age story, I anticipate that it’ll focus on the thoughtful and poignant moments, as many Drama Specials do. Often only one episode (some stretch for multiple episodes), the series likes to tell small stories that focus on the human moments, which can be quite moving despite the short running time. So while the conflict sounds big and dramatic, I expect it’ll be a quieter story without any makjang twists.
(The description, however, totally did make me think of the sweeping, angsty campus melo-love-triangle music video (heh) starring Lee Jun-ki as the guy who falls for a new girl while being indebted to the old one. I love how MVs can make anything epic. If you care to watch the “Grace” MV trio, here are Part 1, 2, and 3. You have to watch till the third to make sense of it all.)
When I Was Prettiest airs on August 26.

I saw this news on my FB page yesterday. I like that I get more info here and a commentary relating it to other dramas (BOF) and MVs.

This kid sure is pretty. The last bus scene in Korea with him turned me into a crybaby.

Ditto! :) But I have a feeling his character here won't be that cute and funny.

Love him. His coming of age story was so relatable and poignant in HK3.
Speaking of music videos, I noticed recently that he's in 2NE1's I Don't Care MV. He plays the cheating ex, which just makes me laugh for some reason.

Lee Jong Suk <3 Bbuing~ bbuing~ ^^
I know you can't control love, but that is probably the girlfriend's worst nightware to have her boyfriend fall for another girl while she's sick. Any news about who the female leads will be?

Okay, now I want a kdrama series about an ageing ex flower boy relegated to the D-list. It would be Best Love comedy or embarrassment meets Picture of Dorian Gray psychodrama meets Tithonus tragedy and star Kim Seung Woo as aged flower boy with dimply Joo Won as his younger self whom he is insanely jealous of.

OMG GRACE. Brings back memories I tell ya, always made me think it was some drama I was missing when it turned out to be just a music video. But on that subject: Timeless by Xiah Junsu and Jang Ri In anyone? Ah gotta love korean entertainment and their epic sweeping drama like music videos. But grace has always been a favourite, nice to know it made an impact on you as well jb haha

Javabeans,
I think these Drama Specials are some of the best stuff on TV! In the past two years of watching, have only seen three that I did not like due to the story line.
Perhaps these wonderfully-done dramas are the reason I lose patience with the multi-episode dramas that catch my interest in the first two episodes, only to wander aimlessly for 17 episodes until the (foregone) conclusion?

Just saw this 2012 special on TV today (2013.June.21 NYC). Director Lee Jong-seok made this simple story into an very good drama.
It's not a campus drama.
