To the Beautiful You has its poster shoot
by javabeans
No, it’s not the final poster, but here’s the first official group still of the high school flower boys (and girl in disguise Sulli) of To the Beautiful You, the Hana Kimi remake about a girl who dresses as a boy to enter a boys’ athletic high school.
From left to right in the above poster shoot, we’ve got:
- Kang Kyung-joon (Nonstop 5), the track coach. Despite being known for being tough on the kids, I’m betting he probably does a lot to help our hero, being a former high jumper himself. (Correction: It’s not Yoo Min-kyu after all, but he’s still cast. Aw, yay for his sophomore outing after rocking—literally—in Shut Up: Flower Boy Band as bassist Casanova Ha-jin. Yoo Min-kyu plays Young-man, captain of the taekwondo team and also leader of his dorm. He’s got a rough attitude, but lots of affection for his hoobaes and his taekwondo team.)
- Min-ho of SHINee as the lead. He’s “genius high jumper” Kang Tae-joon, who suffers an injury and falls into a mental slump.
- Sulli as the heroine-masked-as-ordinary-dude Gu Jae-hee. She transfers to the high school because of Tae-joon, wanting to offer him hope in his difficult time.
- Lee Hyun-woo (Equator Man) as the second lead leg of the main love triangle, Cha Eun-gyul. He’s a soccer player with outstanding skills and a positive energy that makes him popular with the girls, though he’s really a pure-hearted boy who’s never been in love before.
- Last but not least, we’ve got sageuk regular Seo Joon-young of Tree With Deep Roots, Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child, and Great King Sejong. He plays Ha Seung-ri, captain of the fencing team and head of the dorm Jae-hee gets assigned to. A strong leader with a “macho” personality.
Hm, I like that there’s a mix of acting talent with the new blood, because at least the rookies will be playing off of peers with experience. I feel a bit better about the main cast despite being leery of Sully and Min-ho, although it’s really the producing side that has me worried: I see it as something of an unholy pairing, taking the clunky editing talents and dubious taste levels of PD Jeon Ki-sang (Boys Before Flowers) alongside the more nuanced writing of the High Kick trilogy’s Lee Young-chul.
In the grand traditions of gender-bending heroines before her (see: Yoon Eun-hye, Moon Geun-young, Park Shin-hye, Go Eun-ah), Sulli has chopped off her long locks and opted for a boyish cut. Gotta fit in to infiltrate the literal boys’ club, right? (For comparison purposes, there’s also a shot at bottom of the other actresses who have played the lead role in other Hana Kimi adaptations: Ella Chen from the Taiwanese version, Horikita Maki from Japan’s 2007 series, and Maeda Atsuko from the 2011 one.)
I understand the need to tone down a starlet’s feminine features so I won’t complain about her cut (though I don’t think she looks like a boy at all), but my one great sadness is that the adorable and talented budding heartthrob Lee Hyun-woo had to go and get a mushroom-bowl cut to match. What were you smoking? Sad beans.
To the Beautiful You airs on SBS beginning August 8.

oh man.. I'm excited... but with caution.
I loved loved loved the manga. The J-drama with Maki was alright... and T-drama with Ella was cringe worthy. Let's hope this K-drama won't disappoint too much.
But with Boys Over Flowers producer... I'm scared. I'm so scared. Ahahahaa... plllease let it be watchable PLEASE!

I have a noona crush on Min-ho! Can't believe he'd been cast as the lead. He's super adorable, always stood out on variety shows. Loved the Japanese version, and with Min-ho, I seriously cannot wait for this!

Everyone's doubting him, but even if he doesn't do that well at least he's nice to look at haha
But I think he'll do fine
AND pictures were released of him high-jumping and he looks great.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I can never get enough of Hana Kimi! Although...I could go for a nicely satisfying ending. ;)

I can understand your wanting to have a satisfying ending, me too, at first but when I watched the series for the second time (actually, I can't count the times after that...) heheheh I kind of love the ending. Something like, "loving secretly someone" as what Mei Tian had said...

When will the drama officially air? In the interview with minho, he said on 15 August. But many people say it will air on 8 August, after the drama Gosht. I am very confused right now.

That part's seriously confusing me too.
It's supposed to replace Ghost and everyone's saying August 8th, but then in Minho's interview he said August 15th and there are rumors that its being pushed back *CONFUSED*

You have my vote on that. I would love to see Mars again. But Mars was a much more adult subject matter so it would be harder to convince the networks I think.
But most of all, I want them to do Faster Than A Kiss. Anybody? Please with sugar on top.

maybe tvN or another credible cable company will take up the challenge. was missing and wondering what drama jo bo ah will do next when i started thinking what if she played kira from MARS or keiko from cat street.
as for another manga drama adaptation, would love to see BECK. SUFBB was great, and if the same music/pd will be involved, i'm for it

well, however discomforting, it explained kira's scars that made her withdrawm and not liked being with boys. one thing MARS did do was delve into psychological and emotional trauma of its character(s). and the darkness of people, especially those you were to trust. the "rape thing" would've been unavoidable but i'm sure it would've been touched upon, not like the taiwan version, and glossed over in order not to upset their viewers

I'm not feeling Hyun Woo's haircut. He's the only reason I'll try to watch this. Anyway, the haircut won't get in the way of his great acting. Hehe.

I thought they deliberately give him that weird haircut, to make bold, underline, and italicized the hilarious character of Nakatsu.
Gee, why can't they leave it to his acting?

I'm excited after seeing this picture. Haven't seen Sulli act but from her look alone, I can totally by her as being Mizuki. Just hoping they don't stuff this up like BOF *fingers-crossed*.

Based on the track record for PD here, he is going to mix Han Kimi Jdrama version with TWdrama version..just like he did with BOF.

Still wary about this. I tried watching the TW-drama version as I absolutely loved the J-drama version and got burned. Ella Chen was just horrible! She was over-acting every scene to the point that it was just too annoying to watch beyond 2 episodes. I hope the K-drama version would be better though I still couldn't see Minho as an actor..Oh well..here's to hoping for the best!

i think this is not like coffee prince, where the girl is so boyish that people mistake her for a boy... here it is a girl who pretends to be a boy, so i think it's ok if she's still feminine cuz, girls, try acting like boy, i think you'll either go overboard or will be lacking, very difficult to hit the right spot, so it will be perfectly fine in this drama's context to retain some of her inherent feminine mannerisms, cuz the charac's not a tomboy, and can't become a perfect actor overnight... kinda like when even delicate-looking boys, when dressed as girls make it a bit hard to buy them as girls, but when you fnally do they still spoil it by acting so OTT in how they think girs act...
which will make it all the funnier when a whole dorm of boys don't notice her as a girl-in-a-mushroom-cut... so i hope the drama addresses that right at the beginning, like the character calling her out as too feminine, or you know drama characters which stereotype gays so that anyone who is even a bit effeminate or metrosexual is thought to be gay, that kinda misunderstood sex-preference hijinks (no offence to the gay cmmunity, i'm just saying how dramaland makes use of the characters' narrow mindsets to create comic situations where straight people pretend to be gay, playing on people's misconceptions, a la Personal Taste)...

I seen all three versions and gave the manga a go. I always liked gender bender drama and most of them tend to be comedies as well and the gender confusion is always good for plenty of laughs. I think a lot judge Hebe? from the TW harshly, she easily the best one that looks like a boy and she did have a cuteness that grew on me as I watched, she certainly not ugly! But the first japanese version with Maki is likely most people's favorite with a good over all cast and it seems they really had great fun making it and that came through. The more resent version with Maeda Atsuko or ACCHAN as she known from her role as the centre of AKKB48 [now graduated] lacked a good allround cast that the orginal and had more 'moral' messages that japanese tv drama so love to force feed its viewers, still she certainly had enough charm to carry the role and drama. It well be interesting how closely they stick to the story line or it they try to make a 'new' version. I am hoping they stick close to the original version if only because I do not think with so many young idol want a by actors appearing in it, that they can successfully pull of anything like good solid acting that would require.

Hebe was not in the Hana Kimi from TW- it was her S.H.E mate Ella Chen who recently got married and if you thought she was not feminine take a look at her wedding video dance with her new husband. O.o Ommo.
The japanese remake actress did do a good job - I liked her.

ow right I knew it was one of the girls from SHE, Hebe that the one that was burned, that maybe why her name was on my mind. I think in Hana Kim they made Ella up to look, well bad, much like they did for her character in Rose, but in proper makeup she looks just fine and of course her voice has that deep tone also allowing her to play as a male.
Maeda Atsuko seems to make a lot of manga to Tv shows like Q 10 and Majisuka Gakuen, of course with her also being the number one in Akb48 her selling power is huge.

I always like Hana Kimi Taiwanese version. They got a great cast. I always like a scene in every episode. They have this scene where Mei Tian (school doctor) had a chat with Wu Zun (Quan) and they talked about "hidden love". I always love that. And the whole series was much better than the Japanese version. It was so playful, natural acting as if they were not acting at all, light, and meaningful. Overall I gave that series 5 thumbs up. I hope they will not change the story if they are trying to have a remake of that in Korean.

that school doctor made another gender bender Tv drama but as the male lead, he was the stand out actor wise in Hana Kim for me. It was about a girl who gets dumped and in mental shock lost all her hair so she bald..now no one would hired a bald girl but had no trouble hiring a bald male, so she becomes a male
