Sulli and Min-ho’s couple shoot for Vogue Girl

Well don’t they look pretty together. The stars of the upcoming gender-bendy rom-com To the Beautiful You have already jumped on the couple photo shoot bandwagon in a spread for Vogue Girl, sporting very similar looks, as drama heroes and their crossdressing heroines are wont to do. Why not do some drama promo and get some practice snuggles down in the meantime? It’s a win-win.

The remake of Hana Kimi stars f(x)’s Sulli as a girl who poses as a boy to go to an all-boys’ athletic school, and SHINee’s Min-ho as the hero, Kang Tae-joon, a genius high jumper. I… don’t even know what a genius high jumper is or how he differs from a regular high jumper, but in any case, he hits a slump that pushes our heroine Gu Jae-hee into dressing up as a boy to be by his side.

She’s no more stripped of her girlish looks than any of the crossdressing actresses before her (funny to think how many, actually), but that’s never been a strict rule of the genre. We just go with it, like we believe in body swaps and time jumps and genius chaebol heroes. Everyone will believe she’s a boy and that’s that. Gender-bending aside though, the look is really cute on her.

The 16-episode drama promises fun and fluff. Let’s pray to ye drama gods that it also comes with a beating heart. To the Beautiful You premieres August 8 on SBS.

... I am surprised they used Sulli and not Amber...

I know, right? But Amber's originally taiwanese, so I guess that had something to do with it? Like her Korean wasn't good enough? I don't know. Hahaha.

Sorry, but have to disagree.

Sulli will be fun in this role because even though she's cross-dressing and pretending to be a boy, she still has that innate femininity that let's us know she's a total girl.

Amber, on the other hand, is way more masculine when contrasted with the idol boys. She acts, sounds and dresses like a male - she doesn't project any femininity, whatsoever, making the 'girl disguised as a boy' theme kinda moot. It's tough to root for the girl who you know can beat the crap out of the boys, for real.

"It’s tough to root for the girl who you know can beat the crap out of the boys, for real."

...no, it's not. What kind of sexist crap is this. What's wrong with having a ~masculine girl cast in this role, or with masculine female characters in general, wtf.

0

What the hell? No, it's not. I root for heroines that I like - and it's not their femininity that's likeable or not, but the character.

0

Agree Cynthia ...I'll be watching.

0

I agree about Sulli. I think she'll do well as Mizuki in all honesty and she even looks like a boy in that first pic up there. The thing about Mizuki is that she's indifferent in that boys way of being indifferent-- she's more like Ji Won from High Kick 3 girls clothing + a bit ditzy.

I would have liked to see Amber in the role, though, seeing as she already has the look and it would be more believable--like Yoon Eun Hye in Coffee Prince, she really did look masculine in that role. And that's why people keep suggesting her--she's a perfect fit for a girl-boy in looks.

I do disagree that she doesn't project any femininity whatsoever though. I could tell she's a girl from a mile away and could never understand other's confusion over her gender, but maybe that's just me. But it doesn't matter since I hear she can't act, so there's no use to argue the point if that's the case.

0

i don't need 'innate femininity' to affect how i feel about the character. i'll let the actress's portrayal of the character decide how i interpret the character.

and fyi, there's a ton of people who would root for the girl who can "beat the crap out of the boys". it's a nice breather compared to the staple brand of kdrama heroines.

0

Actually I only root for gals who can beat the crap out of boys (Ha Ji-won!).
I dislike weak damsels in distress who can't even breathe on their own (Gil Teacher!).

0

Totally wrong! Are you basically saying that Amber is not feminine in any way? That's just plain rude. I don't know her well but she has feminine charm to her!! And Ella Chen is a complete tomboy and played Mizuki in the Taiwanese version and she played the role very well. "It’s tough to root for the girl who you know can beat the crap out of the boys, for real." ?? WTH?

0

could'n agree more...she is perfect for the role......

0

I would prefer Amber because she looks like she can beat the stuffing out of a boy. Geez. I always root for the tomboy. What's this about femininity? Pft! Some of us girls actual lack such things as feminine charm - whatever the hell that is!!!

I would want Amber for the part, but the only reason why I would say she's not fit for the part is (1) the lack of acting history and (2) I don't think her Korean is strong enough to handle a leading role with Korean as the primary speaking language. Other than that, I would sure love to see her act one day after many acting lessons and Korean language lessons. Although, I'd say most idols would need the acting lessons. HA!

0

i feel like sulli will do good in the role and i think the reason why amber wasn't casted because her korean isn't good enough yet for her to act comfortably.

0

She acts, sounds and dresses like a male – she doesn’t project any femininity, whatsoever, => agree! no offense amber or those who like her... but i hardly found amber's feminine's side...but i know, she's still a girl..

sully can act clumsy..it's the character of mizuki..

ps : ella is tomboy but she married now..she had boyfriend at the time she played as mizuki and she wears girls's outfit..but amber???? okay..no offense..

0

Amber? Nope nope nope. The lead is a girl who goes to a boys school to be with her crush. NOT because she's a tomboy who simply wants to go to a boys school cuz she thinks she's a boy.

I get the "an actress who can pass as a boy"... but not to THAT extent. Or else you might as well cast a guy.

0

What r u talking about? There is nothing wrong with a girl beating the crap out of guys if it is for self-defence! What, a girl can't defend herself?

0

I know what your saying, and I agree though. Even though Amber can be a more passable boy Sulli fits this characters image more. The character is suppose to be a more feminine chick who suddenly has to take on this boy image. It's suppose to be conflict with her girly image and the boyish "act". She's suppose to struggle acting like a guy, where as a tomboy wouldn't have as much trouble and probably fit right in.

I also agree that I can tell Amber is a girl too, but the difference their is that Amber would have to portray a more girly girl acting like a boy. Ugh I hope that makes sense... let me just stop before I confuse myself.

0

But Amber's not an actress, well I don't really know if she can act. Although she could pass with the looks department as a girl-disguising-as-a-boy, I'm not really sure with the acting.

By the way, they look pretty. I mean the spread looks good. I love their look. ^__^

I agree that Amber is the perfect girl-who-can-pull-off-a-boy look, but she's not the perfect person for To Beautiful You. Like someone mentioned before, there's a language barrier -- Amber's Korean isn't very good. I don't know if her Chinese is any good; her first language is English. But that aside, Amber just wouldn't fit the character of Mizuki. Mizuki's kind of naively cute, anxious, always hoping to help, in a sort of puppy-dog, petite naive Asian girl kind of way. Not to say that Mizuki isn't tough too, but Amber doesn't have the right kind of look of innocence. There's more to a character than just how well she pulls off short hair.

Required fields are marked *

Agreed - and femininity has nothing to do w/ whether a girl can beat up boys or not.

Like the original 'girl warrior' (Yoon Eun hye), girls like Sulli and Suzy could probably beat up on some of the wimpier male idols.

0

But then isn't that stuff all objective?
What is "femininity"?
What is having the "right kind of look of innocence"? Does someone have to have big doe eyes and a sweet overall appearance to have that?

I really don't see how this:
http://mumuii.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/d00920204aec4844df3be.jpg?w=490

is any less innocent than this:
http://www.asianpopcorn.com/battle_images/Eyes_smile_Sulli_f_x__12072010232900.jpg

Like others said, I feel Amber could have fit that role, too, if only she had acting talent and her Korean was stronger. But, this doesn't mean I don't think Sulli can't do it.
I do agree Sulli is also a seemingly perfect fit for Muzuki (never seen her act, so seemingly, it is). I mean, Mizuki is not a very layered character--she's a naive, ditzy, cares-about-everyone tomboy. Really anyone can play this role. Shit, I'd want Lee Si Young in this role, too, if she didn't already have a similar character already.

But, I don't like how some arguments are knocking one person solely based on how she looks, talks, and dresses in real life. Cuz, in the end I'm going to be sitting here going, "Alright...now give me a real reason." And we already have two, so I don't know what the rest is about...

0

But is she an actress? Compatibility aside, I just want the role to be played well. I hate idols getting lead and disappointing. I've seen some clips of Sulli acting and the girl can act. I'm pretty excited about that.

Same here. But i actually prefer Sulli an actress than an idol. Well she should have just continued being an actress coz her group is a bit off to me. I get the mixture of everything kind of formula where sexy, boyish etc are thrown into 1 group, but its all over the place. Recycled plus bad music doesnt help either.
And SM should have given her acting roles way before dream high coz i get the feeling shes being groomed to be the next suzy given the latter's immense popularity after dream high.

VOGUE: Did you practice high jump a lot? When we see you win on “Let’s Go Dream Team” do you think it’s really as good as player/athlete’s standard?

MINHO: I started practicing regularly for 1.5 months before filming. I thought the 1st until 2nd second try was easy, but this one is so different from what I did on dream team. High jumper player does backward jump, so this is really hard. High jump can be said as a very hard sport among trackfield event, and one of events that players avoid.

High jump is a really hard sport. Especially when you did it backwards, like Sano. Minho doesn't need stunt man.

And btw this drama will not air in August 8th, it will air on August 15th.

Shun was not an idol, Wu Chun was and I have to say I wasn't a big fan of the Taiwanese version even if I do like Wu Chun as an actor. I just hope that Minho is a better actor in comparison to Wu Chun...

Dramaland seems to be running out of juice lately. I feel like this is the third time Taiwan, Japan and Korea have recycled the same material.

Honestly not looking forward to this. The Japanese Hana Kimi was memorable only because of Ikuta Toma's hilarious portrayal of Nakatsu, Mizushima Hiro's slightly deranged portryal of Nanba and the random dude who went around feeling up the air for "ghosts." Even the Taiwanese version didn't do much for me. *Le sigh* Guess this one's another pass.

At least they look cute together...sorta. >.>

Its funny its usually the main leads that cements the drama but the reason why hanakimi worked wasnt because maki or shun it was because everyone else. Ikuta Toma stole the show and the other side characters made the drama so much more interesting and that is why I dont have a ton of expectations for thisdrama.

I completely agree with you and luraaa. You guys literally took the thoughts out of my head. The two main leads (sorry Shun-kun...I still love you though) were insanely boring; there was no chemistry. Then again, Jdoramas are seriously lacking in that department so moot point. I enjoyed HK07 because of the secondary characters who pretty much stole the show and made it their own. Luraaa you just made me want to rewatch HK07 really, really bad. I think I might have to kick back and catch a few episodes this weekend.

It's not just Nakatsu, Yamamoto, and Nanba-sempai who were memorable in their roles. The dorm leaders and members were all memorable in their own way, which was why the 2007 Japanese version worked for me.

Maki, Shun, and Toma maybe the lead characters in the series but everyone were memorable in their own way.

> the 3 dorm leaders: Nanba-sempai, Oscar, and Tennouji.
> Yamamoto (as mentioned above) and his relationship with everyone else (I can still recall him being introduced in the first episode and his relationship with Nakatsu as room mates).
> Sekime - the guy whose name gets changed by everybody else (and who can recall his hair who went from crazy blonde to shiny black hair?)
> Nakao - the pretty boy who's in love with Nanba-sempai (OT, but I love that most of his characters are gay).
> Umeda sensei and the photographer
> Tennouji's dorm members and followers (I love their expressions everytime Tennouji punishes them). There was also one particular member who defies him all the time but gets hit in the end.
> Oscar's dorm members and followers (but Oscar mostly stood out in their group)
> Kagurazaka (even though Shirota Yuu was not a good actor, he was still alright)
> Hibari girls (of all the secondary characters, excluding the guests, these girls I liked least. I don't know why.)
> the principal (it's like she just goes there for a visit and doesn't really talk to them)
> and the teacher who appears every episode only to announce the next activity.

These are pretty much what I remembered from watching the show 3 years ago (plus quick rewatch of my fave episodes) and I still remembered most of them (and their names) without googling them. And this show still makes me laugh whenever I rewatch my fave episodes. So most Hana Kimi 2007 fans might have huge expectations for the Korean version (or not, depending on the person). But for me though, the 2007 version is the best adaptation. Because despite the changes in character and plot from the manga, the 2007 adaptation still captured the high school, gender-bender, shoujo genre.

Wow I could not remember all their names but I do remember all their faces even after all these years. All those boys were perfectly played and looked like they had so much fun in the show and thats why the show made me happy watching it. They were all so different but had a strong freindship no matter how small or big the role was. I really hope SM doesnt change the format too much or exclude/change characters or themes. Questioning one's sexual identity was a huge theme and homosexuality is very apparent in the drama. I dont know if SM is willing to explore that theme.

Well, we already know that our beloved Umeda won't be gay. He'll be having his own love triangle with some woman who'll be the dorm manager.

I love the Japanese version as well, didn't care too much for the Taiwanese one though. I read most of the manga, which is the storyline I remember the most. One thing that I know this version will do better is the sets and the overall visual appeal. The Japanese one wasn't too pretty to look at, imo (besides some of the guys ;)) I'm also worried about the story...but hopefully the writer can deliver the same awesomeness and humor that he/she did for High Kick. I'm also looking forward to the music, since I heard it's the same person who did the music for City Hunter.

There's something very Park Shiyeon-esque about Sulli in that first pic, can't quite put my finger on it.

Never watched any other version of this, so I'm coming to it fresh. I like Sulli actually, though I've only ever seen her in an ep of MBLAQ's Idol Army. Thought she seemed sweet.

I'm generally a fan of cross-dressing heroines, so this sounds right up my alley. Let's hope it skews more towards cute than gender-angsty. I mean, it's the 21st century drama heroes - it's okay to be gay!

I just hope it's be on the same levels of epic craziness as the japanese version (as all the comments seem to echo). Nakatsu is still who I'm keeping my eye out for of course, but I do wonder what they'll do about the rest of the cast...

Hana Kimi was always more about the minor characters, for me, than the lead couple (whose relationship kind of bored me). I dont expect the Minho (whom I've never really warmed up to)/Sulli pair to be that different, but at least they're both pretty :)

So excited ^__^ I'm a huge fan of the Japanese version and LOVED SANO (SHUN) like CRAZY in that show. The Taiwanese version wasn't as good but I enjoyed it very much because I really like Ella Chen and Wu Chun both :P I'm realllllly~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ hoping that this one does good. So far, I've loved the Korean remakes of other shows like BOF and PK but I'm afraid of where this is going to head. But Sulli is really looking like a boy so I'm glad they didn't ruin that part :) I really have no idea where this show is going because I don't have any experience with these actors/ actresses but I'm willing to give it a try because Hana Kimi is one of my most favorite shows and I tend to be a sucker for "Girl-into-Boy" dramas :D

I really loved the japanese hana kimi and sort of liked the taiwanese version, i hope this will be equally as fun though i'm not going to expect anything from it. Pretty people are pretty. Hopefully sulli can still act since i really like her :) (i remember partially watching a movie she was in as a child actress and she was good!) *pumps fists in air*

I loved Hana Kimi, i think it was shot beautifully but I have to agree with the words
"We just go with it, like we believe in body swaps and time jumps and genius chaebol heroes."
Genius Chaebol Heros!!! Classic. but you forgot cold.

at Vogue - I love the first pic of Minho and Sulli...i love the way Minho's eyes gazed at Sulli. I bet they have good chemistry with that pic alone. TTBY couple already captured my heart. And surely drama Gods have answered our prayers on beating hearts!

on bashers of Sulli - i believe on this girl...i mean she's not a newbie when it comes to acting. She was once a child actress, right?

And from the way i look at her ...she's PERFECT for this role. So, let's all give her a chance to prove her worth.

Hana Kimi's version may have the best lead characters so far...but i'm betting high on Korean lead actors to work at par.

I'm not a Korean, but hey! i'm proud on the works of Korean actors! I just hope my country, will also do versions of Hana Kimi ....we had a version of Korean romcom Full House bdw.

I actually really liked the Taiwanese version, maybe cos I watched it first. It was CRAZY hilarious (like literally crazy ridiculous crazy.) and the boys were all so pretty. (Wuzun is prettier than Ella seriously.)

Super excited for this! :D

Taiwanese version have Ella, she is an idol.
Japanese vers. (2007) have Ikuta Toma who is also an idol, he is a Johny!
Japanese vers. (2011) have Maeda Atsuko who is an idol (who don't know AKB48? Lol).
Let's don't judge this drama before it's airing.

Ikuta may be part of Johnny but he's more of an actor than a singer. If memory serves right, he hasn't been in a group since 4tops, and that was eons ago. So in essence, he's an actor that can sing with his buddies on shows when needed :D

I absolutely hated the Jdrama version (2007, haven't seen the 2011 one), and I don't enjoy Tdramas in general, so hopefully this will be good! I loved the manga back in the day

I don't have the slightest idea how all these young idols are gonna pull this off.

But a picture of Sulli cutting her hair in that *cough* horrid*cough* bowl-cut hairdo is enough to tweak my interest meter up a notch.

I'll just sit back and watch.

To add: Sulli's eyes...they remind me of--Yeo Jin Gu's...

"The 16-episode drama promises fun and fluff."

And that's what I thought BIG would be....

K-dramas: love drama. Particularly the melo type. Trust none to be fluff and comedy to the end. Get half-way and prepare for major mellowness.
