Song Joong-ki stills from Nice Guy
by javabeans
Song Joong-ki. Also, sweaty Song Joong-ki. There you have ’em: two reasons to post these new stills for KBS drama Chicken Man, urg, I mean Nice Guy, despite the fact that the stills are rather uninformative and unexceptional. Though I suppose there are a bevy of indignant fangirls and fanjummas ready to protest that the very presence of Song Joong-ki makes them automatically exceptional. Okay, I dare not protest.
Nice Guy—full title No Such Thing As Nice Guys—is the upcoming Wednesday-Thursday series from writer Lee Kyung-hee, who’s a familiar name in the world of melos; she penned I’m Sorry, I Love You, Thank You, and the first drama to really put Song Joong-ki in the public eye, Will It Snow For Christmas.
The plot of this one kicks off when our “nice” guy gets burned by one woman (Park Shi-yeon) and then uses another one (Moon Chae-won) to get his revenge. Which strikes me as being the most roundabout revenge ever—I mean, who has the patience for that? Whatever happened to just slashing her tires, or throwing flaming dog poop on her doorstep?
Song Joong-ki’s character starts out as a pure-hearted med student (hence the book-holding student pose) who “lives for one woman,” but becomes a lady-killin’ “homme fatale” and scam artist caught up in a fast-paced whirlwind life. That must’ve been one doozy of a heartbreak.
I’m all for actors changing up their images, especially when it’s a fresh-faced actor making the first foray into darker, complex roles. (It’s also why I’m curious to see how the similarly warm and approachable Ji Chang-wook will fare as a villain in Five Fingers.) I do think Song flirted with a less shiny type of role in Penny-Pinching Romance, where he was a bit of a loser and a scamp, but ultimately he retained his heart and likability, I thought.
I’m familiar with Song Joong-ki breaking my heart by being railroaded by his overbearing father, or harboring an unrequited love, or, you know, dying. But breaking my heart by being a dick? Eeeeek. That’s a whole new level.
Nice Guy follows Gaksitaaaaaaaal and premieres in September.

So I'm called a fanjumma? Haha. First comment yay. I'm excited for this. I was hoping it was a ROM-COM though and not a Melo. Oh well.

I'm right there with you as a fanjumma. :D
And also, I too had been hoping to see Song Joong Ki lead a series as main male character, preferably a rom-com. I guess I'll just have to settle with lead male in a melo.

*high five* to a fellow ahjumma. (^_^) I guess I can compromise for a melo if Song Joong Ki and Moon Chae Won are there. Plus, after Gaksital I'm pretty sure I'll be needing some therapy for withdrawal symptoms. Hehe.

I'm not sure I'll watch it if it's too melo. Was kinda hoping for rom-com too. If it's rom-com, then he'd be a more light hearted dick just pulling some out of whack hijinks, but this seems like he'll just be a souless dick taking full advantage of someone for dumb reasons. I'm not sure I really want to watch the latter. That'd be too frustrating. I'd just be shouting, "Just Get Over It Already!" at the screen and he'd be all, "I can't stop because I'm already down this path, and though I realize that I'm being an ass, if i stop this now... well that'll just make too much sense."
I forget how many eps this is supposed to be but maybe I'll check it out cause I luff him.

Lol. This is so true. I haven't watched a melo in a while, so I think I actually forgot that this is the only reasoning which any drama character going down the wrong path can have to keep going once they realize it's wrong.

LOL right tho? This is how i feel too. and its why I cant with melodramas most of the time (altho I am enjoying gaksital). also burst out laughing at your "because that would make too much sense" because what kind of reasoning is that even. I will watch this, because I love Song Joong Ki so much, but it will be sad to see such cruel words come out of that cute baby face of his. (also didnt this lady also write A Love to Kill? Which was wow laughably bad IMO)

I've read plot points from someone who looked at the script from the Moon Chae Won gall, and Song Joong Ki definitely won't be taking advantage of someone for a dumb reason. It really is a doozy of a heartbreak, really intense. I'd say his character is completely justified in revenge and I kind of want to help him do it because I'd be hellbent on revenge if it were me...but then again I love melo and those Dumas type sweeping revenge tales.
Also Moon Chae Won said that she was looking to Shim Eun Ha as inspiration!

What does she do? Cheat on him with his dad? or brother? I mean what could she do that was so horrible....kill his dog? spit on his grandmother's grave? call his mom a whore? I mean if she did any of that that'd be awful but not really enough for me to sympathize with male lead to become a soulless lady killer and using and abusing random ladies (who had nothing to do with it) like really tho. Oh I get it, she set his thesis that he worked on all year, on fire. I mean I would go on a revenge spree over that. lol.

Anyway, as much as I love Jiong-kind, I just can't get behind this kind of Melo. How on earth is that revenge?! Tch...I'm annoyed at the character already. I'd prefer to go the route of Five Fingers than this.

I'm Sorry, I Love You. It's probably one of the biggest melodrama hits ever, and it was also written by the writer who is doing Nice Guy.
I watched it a few months ago, when I didn't really have anything else to watch, and I'm pretty sure I watched half of it with my eyebrows raised. It's basically 16 episodes of over-the-top melodrama and intense brooding, but if you don't have high expectations, it can be very fun.

MiSa is a drama I definitely don't regret having seen. No, not only because of SJS, I love Im Su Jung to pieces, too ;p And a jerk portrayed well is such a rare treat. But a real one, not one good at heart, but with issues from childhood.

Knowing this writer, I'll hazard a guess that MCW is PSY's little half-sister or something like that. Oh! Or maybe it's PSY's fault that MCW is blind? Heh. Anyway, the only thing I know for sure is that it will be Very. Dramatic. Save me some popcorn.
Also, I'm just gonna say this and sit back and watch your horrified reactions: I've never actually seen Song Joong-ki in anything but pictures and CFs.

I'm strangely excited now. I like a crazy melodrama every now and then, just because they're so inadvertently funny and easy to watch. There is only one rule when I'm getting into something that I know will be an over-the-top-melo: Do not be tricked into taking it seriously.
Unfortunately, it's kind of like that rule in every drama love-contract about absolutely not falling in love: it's a lot harder than it sounds at first. Because once you start watching something just to laugh, then you find yourself enjoying it, and once you find yourself enjoying it, it doesn't take much for you to actually care. And as soon as you start caring, drama burns you. Know what I mean?

Song Joong Kiiiiiiii! Moon Chae Wooonnnnnn! I'm actually excited for this. I love all the leads; I have all these lingering images of them in dramas I've enjoyed, and it makes me want Nice Guy (horrible title) to be really good. I've only ever watched one other melo, La Dolce Vita, and the best part about it was Oh Yun Soo and how delicate and quietly persevering she made her character. She was all kinds of delicious. I hope we get some of that in this show.
And it looks like the fall will bring us a bunch of great dramas, kind of like Oscar bait season. Yay!

I never watched him in RM, so I don't understand what the "flower boy schtick" is.
I do know from SKKS, that he can play the charming, handsome playboy, but also showed a richer side to the character as the caring and grieving friend.
In TWDR, there were no flower boy moments.
We saw a weak young prince face down his biggest fears in a very credible way.
His scenes with his father were riveting, his scenes with his adult self were breathtaking.
Mostly, when I think of SJK, I think of intelligence.
You can always see him thinking, so what comes out of his mouth feels natural, not acting.

For some reason, this writer's dramas put extremely attractive people through tons of pain.
I expect that SJK will want to call Go Soo up at one point and ask how he managed to get through WISFC without completely breaking down from the heartbreak.
As far as melos, I think they are wonderful IF you are in the mood.
This writer can take you from happy happy moments to the depths of despair, and then leaves you with a ray of hope just when you thought life is simply not bearable.
Very cathartic.

Me too...Moon Chae Won really impress me in Shining Inheritance..like you.,i also saw MCW acting was more outstanding than the lead Han Hyo Joo and Lee Seung Ki..that why i love her more than the main lead..
and about Lee Kyung Hee.,writer of MiSa & Nice Guy..did you have watch MiSa..??for me that was the BEST Melo Drama & Best Writing ever in Korean Drama History..The story.,script.,scenario and everything about MiSa just too brilliant..but absolutely the most outstanding were an acting of So Ji Sub & Im Soo Jung..What do you think will be the same between MiSa & Nice Guy..? The most flexible thinking in me.,I see the one who will be So Ji Sub in NG was Moon Chae Won..Why? because MCW best specialities was her crying and emotion acting skill..for me,In Korea.,there is no better actress than her to make a heartbreaking acting!! JUST WAIT & SEE!! and Song Joong Ki..he definitely will be Im Soo Jung..Even though SJK will make a revenge like SJS make it in MiSa.,but his char. disc. show that he will be ISJ to bring alot of change..the Most hardest in MiSa & Nice Guy maybe another Sad Ending..i really can't take SE.It's take one week for me to release my emotion and forget everything about the cruel.,pain.,unfair and love story of So Ji Sub in MiSa.If NG will make another sad ending..I hope both MCW & SJK char will died together..not only one..I can't take only one main char.died and another one alive alone..It will be more cruel..I wish the best for NG and be the next Sorry,I Love You...hwaiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
