Posters and teaser for weekend makjang-apalooza Five Fingers

Get ready for makjang thrills galore (you know, if that’s your thing), because weekend drama Five Fingers promises the trademark deception, bitter rivalries, and revenge that give the genre its kick. And punch. And pulling of hair.

Posted here are shots from Five Fingers’ recent poster shoot, featuring Joo Ji-hoon as the lead (which we know because he’s at the piano—although I notice there are ten fingers on the keys, AHEM) in his television comeback. His character is a genius pianist with perfect pitch in the show described as a music melodrama about love, feuds, and music. Vague, but apt.

Coming from the pen of writer Kim Soon-ok, she of quintessential makjang hits Temptation of Wife and Angel’s Temptation, you can pretty much expect lots of high drama and intense conflict. (Though I have to ask: Why no temptation? And why only five fingers? Despite the popularity of the saying, I don’t know any piano virtuosos who actually perform with one hand tied behind their back.) However, I’m getting the sense that Five Fingers is going for something of a “premium makjang” feel, with lush cinematography and careful attention to score. With this director—PD Choi Young-hoon of Painter of the Wind and Iljimae—I can see style playing a large part in establishing mood and tone.

Take, for instance, the following teaser (there is an ad in front):

Aside from Joo we’ve also got Ji Chang-wook, pictured in the first poster’s foreground, shedding his good-boy image (but he does it so adorably well!) to play the antagonist. Aw, look who’s popped his villainous cherry. I actually have hopes that Ji can pull off the role, even though he’s made his name playing warm, approachable types such as in Smile Dong-hae, Warrior Baek Dong-soo, and Bachelor’s Vegetable Store. While the main character overcomes a tragic past and childhood scars to chase his dream, he gets caught up in a bitter rivalry with the rich successor to a corporation. Flames of the Bachelor’s Rooftop Temptation Virus. What has me curious is that they’re brothers; what takes them on divergent paths?

Playing the love interest who gets caught between them is Eunjung, although I suspect the story will really revolve heavily around commanding matriarch Chae Shi-ra (Queen Dowager Insoo), decked out in fierce red.

Jo Min-ki (East of Eden) puts in an appearance as the boys’ father and Chae Shi-ra’s husband. He’s the owner of a company that makes musical instruments, because god forbid anything in a music drama have anything to do with something outside of music. Jo’s character has had a privileged life, growing up as the son of a chaebol, and has an arrogant, willful personality. Also indulgent, since gives his own sons whatever they want. (Except, perhaps, LOVE? Because lord knows dramaland would run out of conflict without withholding Dads and controlling Moms.)

Five Fingers follows A Gentleman’s Dignity and premiers in August.

damn, but everybody looks so good here. Eunjung especially, I'm not even a huge fan of hers, but she looks amazing. I am seriously digging those outfits. I'm looking forward to this. I forgot how pretty Joo Ji Hoon was and Ji Chang Wook is beeeyootiful.

0

I agree...better than some idols, but nothing to shout about IMO...

0

It's because Eunjung is one of those few idols that worked her way up to get good roles. She started off as a child actress and played small or supporting roles. And now she's moving her way up! Same with Jiyeon she started with small roles too.

I was going to say the same thing! I don't even think its fair to place her with most of the other idol actress tbh. She's been at this for so long and really has shown a ton of improvement from each project to the next. She puts a lot into her work and it shows -- its not just something she gets to do because she's an idol, but something she want do and not just to improve her star power. And she seems to take on roles that are going to push her out of her comfort zone (some of the stuff in Queen Insoo were quite shocking coming from an idol lol) I really look forward to this drama~ between Chae Sira and Eunjung its going to be great for me~.

0

I'd recommend Queen Insoo. I haven't finished it, but she does pretty well there from what I've seen, and I'm told that she gets better as it goes on, and that she's excellent by the end of her performance.

Yesss!!! 30 episodes sounds PERRRFECT. I was really worried it was going to be around 40-50 episodes long, or even 100 or 100+ *gasp* (though I shouldn't have worried because prime time dramas are rarely that long).

30 episodes does not leave too much room for makjang plot shenanigans, so that makes me as happy as a clam~~

There's a reason for the no-sock look, which is one of the character plots lifted from the manga. You guys are just gonna have to watch to find out!!! :)

Oh, thanks for this info. cherkell, because the "no socks" look was the only thing I was seeing, too. And it didn't look good. ^^

0

Required fields are marked *

I find the fact that the lack of socks is a plot point both hilarious and strangely comforting. I guess if you're going to make me stare at bony ankles, it's slightly better if I know there's a reason other than, "I was just too lazy this morning so I thought I'd skip the socks and pretend I'm doing it for fashion."

Now I think I'm going to have to watch at least a couple episodes, just to see what the deal is with the no-sock-thing. Oh, and Joo Ji-hoon. But mostly the socks.

Required fields are marked *

hmmm....don't you know it is a fashion nowadays that man don't wear a sock n they wear a pants that not long enough??Just watch dramas nowadays n see the male character's clothing n then you will know.

0

Oh, m92, I know it all too well, trust me. I've just never seen it as a plot point, which sounds too weird to pass up.

0

Which manga is this based on? Googling gets me the alternative title "The Piano Forest" which is from "Piano no mori" - a manga I've been meaning to read. But that doesn't ring a makjang bell at all...

Well, if it's the same, I'm sorry to say I wish it would have been a j-dorama, not a k-drama...

0

Required fields are marked *

This plot is very very loosely (and I use that term, um... loosely) based on "Piano no mori." The original title of this drama was supposed to be "The Piano Forest" (피아노의 숲 / Pianoeui Soop), but I guess to make it more angsty and makjang-y, it was changed in June to "Five Fingers" (다섯손가락 / Dasutsongarak).

Besides, "The Piano Forest" conjures up more like visions of fluffy bunnies and deer running through a wilderness... not a jealous younger brother tormenting his older brother into submission. Unless that's your idea of fun; then run with it. :D

0

Thanks Cherkell. I went and read some chapters of Piano no Mori (so not fluffy at all but oh well)... I see what you mean with "very very loosely based".

A pity, I think. Although I don't like the art of the manga too much and the exact way the story is told, the manga's premise is pretty interesting, particularly the fact that it plays out in childhood. Which is definitely not what the Korean drama adaptation is going to do.

I'm undecided whether I'm going to give the k-drama a try, makjang isn't my thing at all. And if it's badly done, I can just see this version driving me bonkers.

0

I will be cheering for Wookie in this one, nappeun namja or no. Maybe especially because of. And Cher...I kinda like the Suit of Big Blue Checks.

Seriously? Socks/No Socks is a plot point?

What's next? The brothers who fall out over a toothbrush?

Um, squeeeeee?!? Yes, SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

(Sorry, I promise to not explode the site formatting like I did last time... :D )

Yes, it's 30 instead of 50 episodes -- the PD-nim always intended it to only be a 30-episode tome, but somewhere along the line the news hounds got their facts twisted and reported the show was going to run longer. Taking a page from our rags in the States, ne? Hmpf.

"Five Fingers" gets its title from the injury that JCW's character physically sustains (you may notice that you don't see his left hand in any of the promo shots), and the injury that JJH's character emotionally sustains (maybe that explains the Oska-like hair? LOL!). The script is also very loosely based on the "Piano no mori" manga; several elements from the manga were lifted to develop the brothers' characters. But that's all I'm gonna spoil right now -- I'm sharpening up my recapping pencils in anticipation!!!

Now all we have to do is wait and figure out when SBS will actually air this bad boy. I'm thinking they'll wait until after the Olympics wrap up and we should see a premiere on 11 August. Aw man... you mean I have to wait that long? BRING ON MY PRECIOUS NOW!!!!!!!!!! :P

As a child studying under a crazy genius master piano teacher, he was punished if he stopped for a second, even to pull up his socks.
Problem was it drove him bonkers to have those droopy thingies at his ankles.
He developed tibialiacadophobia,
(which I did NOT just make up thanks to Google Translate) the fear of socks falling down, and had to stop wearing them altogether.

In the winter when he gets cold, he resorts to nude pantyhose under his slacks, or at Christmas those fancy tights wiht the candy canes.

It's especially annoying when I see Asia man wearing pants that are not the right length. It’s not like they are giants, it makes them look even smaller and uncut. Its kills me the most when an above average height man wear this style, like the guy in Queen Hyun’s Man. I feel like I’m watching the Korean version of Steve Urkel

Everything about the preview was quite lovely and ambient~~ I can't wait for the premiere!!

And I LOVE Eunjung; she's my bias in T-ara, and I'm so happy she got this role, but I have a feeling she's going to get a lot of criticism on her acting in the beginning. She was alright in Dream High and White, based on the few minutes I've seen of both, lol. And she was pretty good in Queen Insoo. But Eunjung's pure, innocent acting may come off as affected and unnatural, as did Yoona's in Love Rain, *shudder.* She just has so much aegyo and a unique voice, which may come across as fake on screen, where naturalness is paramount. She does have a talent for concentrating and getting immersed in her darker roles, which I noticed in Queen Insoo. I would be confident of her abilities in portraying an antagonist, but I'm a little worried about her abilities in portraying a typical heroine. Based on her glares and frowns in the promo pics, I have a feeling her character is going to switch over the dark side sooner than later ^^~~

javabeans, you are too funny. as well as jomo, joanne, oftheshore, and i was gonna say cherkell, but she started ranting. chill cherkell. all the comments about the short pants and no socks look is making me think that grandmothers are posting here - too conventional tastes. just chill guys. that's just the fashion for the summer and our JJH is a fashionista after all. pretty soon, these men will be clad in thick sweaters and jackets again, then you'll be wanting to see some skin.

eunjung? she'll just be ok. i think her character is not really important to the drama, that's why they let her stay on, even with the whole bullying issue. JCW's hairstyle is like JYJ Jaejong's "sometimes" hairstyle, like in PTB. JJH's hairstyle? this is why JJH has so many faces. change his hair and he looks totally different. he hasn't had the same hairstyles in any of the projects he's done. unless, he styles this one like in The Devil (Lucifer).

i guess this production is a package deal for KEY EAST Entertainment of BYJ and august is JJH's month, with "I Am a King" opening in Korean theatres on Aug. 9. JJH FIGHTING!!!
