Extension updates: Dr. Jin yes, Gentleman no
by javabeans
After a few weeks of maybes and We’re negotiating and rumors, weekend shows Dr. Jin and A Gentleman’s Dignity have both come out with official stances on the state of their futures: Dr. Jin will be getting its hoped-for extension after all, while weekend ratings winner A Gentleman’s Dignity will wrap without any additional installments.
It seems a bit counterintuitive, since SBS has been raking in 20%+ ratings with zippy, light-hearted rom-com A Gentleman’s Dignity, which is by far the more buzzed-about hit show between the two. You’d think they’d be more primed for prolonging the high numbers. But according to SBS CP Kang Shin-ho, it will end with Episode 20 as planned. He cited actor schedules as a hindrance, adding that while the upcoming London Olympics broadcast schedule will likely result in a pre-emption for the show, there won’t be any other adjustments to its length.
Managers from AM Entertainment, reps for series stars Jang Dong-gun and Kim Haneul, confirmed the same report and went so far as to say they’d never even discussed the possibility of an extension.
On the other hand, MBC is keen to keep Dr. Jin going, even though the show is stuck in low-teens ratings and has been getting some flak for its poor direction, despite an intrinsically interesting story about the modern doctor trapped in the past, messing with Fate by changing the course of history as he continually saves people he really shouldn’t. Maybe Dr. Jin’s genius is more the savant type, where he excels at his profession and lacks a very basic understanding of common sense.
Dr. Jin faces the same issue of an Olympic broadcast schedule conflict, but has decided not to pre-empt and will screen back-to-back episodes to keep on schedule. Originally planned for 20 episodes, the series will now end with 22.
On one hand, the show is absurd enough that I don’t know that I want any more of it existing, period. I’m still watching along, half-wondering why, though I’m by now in that stage of finishing a lackluster meal just to clean that plate. So I’d really prefer a shorter running time. But on the upside, at least it wasn’t the six-episode extension that was also rumored — now that would’ve been painful. If you’ve got words of encouragement for HeadsNo2, who’s faithfully slogging through the series, this would be a great time to let ’em out! She may need the boost to get through that final week.

what a waste is korean drama not like japanese drama wihich after a year the drama ended they still can make one episode special.
i really wanna one episode about all the character married life. collin has little bro/sis. min sook adopt a kid, jung rok become a father (that's cute), meahri become a famous bag desingner and married to yoonie (imagining yoonie cook for meahri and the kids they have) hahahaha and maybe sera & taesan fight in their married life.

HeadsNo2 I really like to read your recaps of the show. You have exactly the right tone of making fun of it but also -maybe guiltily- somehow getting into it from time to time. I really like that balance (and not many on net are capable of it).
So you rock :) and thank you.

This is one of this dramas you keep watching for curiosity at how bad it can get. And usually, by the magic and combination of bad directing combined with bad writing, it can really plummet to below rock bottom.
I'm going to make some guesses for the next episodes:
1. Dr Jin cures HIV, and all other noncurable diseases we haven't found cures for yet. Magically, all it took to find the remedies for these sicknesses was time travel where supplies are limited or nonexistent.
2. More intimate breast touching scenes. Nothing is more romantic than touching someone elsees's fiancé's breasts who happens to look like your semi dead ex lover from another time right? Actually, nothing says romance and melts my heart more than romantic music under candlelight .....and then insert... breast fondling.
3. More peopl falling ill near Dr Jin. That dude is one unlucky omen.
4. He performs brain tumor surgery on himself with his right hand and performs breast surgery with his left hand. The man is practically god in this drama anyhow. What wouldn't surprise me.
5. Crying. Crying. Crying. More crying. From everyone....
6. The secret that's been kept from us allllll these episodes is going to give me cardiac arrest. That better be one DAMN good secret or else * shakes fist at writers*
Fun fun fun. Can't wait for next ep lol!

I actually Im glad they decided to end AGD on a good note, i mean the drama is one of the best this year and i feel like extensions tend to ruin the flow of the story because it ends up just prolonging a conclusion to the characters lives etc. But if they want a sort of extension they can plan ahead for AGD sequel where they either add a storyline that makes the new leads the children of the former male leads lol but knowing kdrama writers they would ruin it so it was good while it lasted. :)
Dr. Jin for me is lack luster because even though the lead guy is good looking he just lacks the acting skills to keep an audience from noticing the flaws in the script. The problem with time traveling drama's is they have a way of never having a good ending or changing what shouldn't be changed so i tried to get into it but can't.

You can watch million other dramas in this entire universe which will give you more 'knowledge' about the 'history' that you are talking about as a 'teen' than TSDJ...Its not like you will learn how to cure cancer and aids by watching TSDJ.

I was thinking back then that TSDJ is going to be a very nice drama. But going to the last episodes makes me whimper with boredom. The story of curing and treating has been repeated so many things , it doesn't have to be that way. It's a question now only of when Dr. Jin is coming back to the present and how he is going to do it. What about the girl in the past and in the present? The director must be lagging so much, it kills a good ending for the drama. Come on, make it exciting!
