Eom Ji-won headlines new Kim Soo-hyun drama

Star writer Kim Soo-hyun (Thousand Day Promise, Life Is Beautiful) has a new drama in the pipeline: a 30-episode family drama called Fortune Favors the Childless, set to air on cable network jTBC. The title is hard to translate without being a million words long — it’s basically a saying that means “to have no children is to have fortune.” An ironic title of course, because the writer’s specialty is the bustling multi-generational family drama.

This one will be no different, as it features three generations under one roof: grandparents Lee Soon-jae and Seo Woo-rim have three adult sons, who all have wives. Three daughters-in-law in one house? That’s brave. First son is Park Young-kyu and his wife, First Daughter-in-Law, is played by Kim Hae-sook. Both are staples in the Kim Soo-hyun family, so no surprise there.

Eom Ji-won (Can Love Become Money) will play their daughter, a judge. She grew up with the weight of her entire family on her shoulders, so it makes sense that she’s described as a perfectionist. Pretty different from her usual fun but flighty characters.

Second Son is played by Song Seung-hwan and his wife Im Ye-jin, and then they have a son played by Alex (Thousand Day Promise). And Kim Min-kyung, pictured below, has been cast as his wife. Third Son and wife are Yoon Da-hoon and Kyun Miri. I’ve already lost track of how many family members there are, but basically Alex and Eom Ji-won play cousins and everybody lives in one (presumably giant) house in the suburbs.

The family drama will center around the three couples and their children, and is no different from any other Kim Soo-hyun drama in that it’s about a family that fights tooth and nail and eventually learns how to live together. Directing is PD Jung Eul-young, who also directed Thousand Day Promise and Life Is Beautiful.

Fortune Favors the Childless premieres in October on jTBC.

WGM=We Got Married: it's a TV show where two celebs pretend they are newlyweds and do stuff together, it's usually casted with lots of idols.

Hi Denali,

I'm squeeeeing with you :-)! Alex was one of the best things in WGM, season 1. I thought he was the best of all the husbands. So thoughtful, always prepared, always making sure Sinae was comfortable, OK and that she would get her sleep. He was also flirtatious (which was adorable and funny). He was very romantic and tender. Remember when he sang to her (Kim Dong-ryul's song and the "Kiss song" when he wanted to kiss her, that was so cute!!!!). He was also a great team player (remember when he was on the trip with Kim Hyun-jong (Sp?) and his "wife" and he switched shirts so KHJ and his wife could have couple T-shirts?)

And he is a great cook! and a great singer! And so easy going... Makes me want to go back and watch season 1 of WGM which was the best season in my opinion. All the couples were sooo funny!!!! :-) and endearing!! I loved watching them more than I like watching dramas :-). And the time they went to look at wedding dresses for her, the look on his face and his reactions *Awww,* the concert (during which he cried and at the end of which he sang for her *Swoons*).

So many good moments *Sighs* OK, I will stop here :-)...

I live with my family now (I'm a minor) and I'm making it my mission to move away for college. I think I would go mad if I had to live with 3 generations of my family in one house. Kudos to their filiality.

And is it just me? But lately I feel like I've been seeing the same ajummas and ajusshis in each drama a watch (more often than before). In this case being Park Young Kyu, and I hope he's a parent with a gangster past in this drama :).

I remember one time in the living room and we were watching B&B and it was my grandma, my mum and me and I remember thinking 3 generations in one room, so cheesy! But I regret it now as I wish I valued it.

It seems like the same people are getting roles. I guess that's what fame does.
I also think that people feel more comfortable when they see a familiar face playing a character on their screen. I know I do.

I'm in the same boat as you. I live with my family and I'm considering going away for college. But then I remember that I love my mother's cooking too much. XD I know how to cook enough dishes to survive, but I'm sure I'd get sick of eating the same food for 4 years. So, in other words, I'm undecided--do I want to move or do I want to stay?

I'd love to live with 3 generations under one roof. My extended family lives on the other side of the earth, and the last time I visited was 2 years ago. With plane tickets getting more and more expensive, it's harder to see everyone. Whenever someone asks what I remember the most about my past, it's the summers I spend with my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. They sometimes annoy me to the point that I want to move, but that feeling doesn't last. You should think about moving away only if that's what you want. Not because your family is just too annoying.

I would recommend moving away for college. It's definitely harder, but you learn to become self-reliant and independent. Also, dorm life/apartment life is all part of the college experience ^^

I know what you mean about home cooking, though. I think I gained like 5-10 pounds freshman year from eating Western food practically everyday in the dining halls, but then I think I ultimately lost 10-15 pounds because I became so sick of it *insert barfy face*

Just remember, you can visit home during spring, winter and summer break. Time flies in college, so it's not so bad~~

I appreciate it. That's what I want to experience--college life. But I'm shy so unless someone confronts me first, I won't attempt to engage them in a conversation. My friends tell me that I'm the type that won't get depressed if I can't make any friends and would probably be able to continue on as if it doesn't really matter, but I think making friends, like making friends in high school, is important. What if I need to call someone in the dead of night for an assignment or something?

I think it's time for me to work things out on my own. Like pushing a baby bird of a cliff so it can learn to fly :). I love being around my family at times like whenever we have big celebrations or dinners and we all gather but at the same time, living with them constantly is very irritating. So it's for both personal growth and personal space.

My mom jokes that I'll have the Freshman 50 vs 15. I bet she's right :). I do like eating out. I want the full college experience considering my high school experience is simply books and no whirlwind youthful experiences.

And I hope I would be calling my friends to party, not just for hw, I do that too much already :).

I think you will be fine with whatever you decide ~Feather~ :).

I really loved "Life is Beautiful" and even though i didn't watch "Thousand Day Promise" (the melo scared me away) i was waiting for Kim Soo-hyun to pen another family drama.

Love the cast - KHS and TK's dad from IDID.

Eom Ji-won is OK and has a very likeable quality.
I would love to watch this live, but I am guessing this cast isn't going to draw a lot of subbers right away.

I watch because of Alex!!! Lol...I guess I'm lucky because all my cousins and grandparemts and relatives live in the same state and we all go to the same church. And when we get together, it's a riot...lol...nothingbeats family, but sometimes you just need to get away.

Oh man I wouldn't function living with my uncles and aunts. Be ten times worse with my mothers side of the family because she's the oldest of eight... EIGHT!

I understand family is important but when your living with your parents and all your other family members you are being bombarded with different morals, values, and perspectives. A person can get lost. Makes me feel bad for EJW's character but also interested in seeing her change if she does in fact change that is.

Wow, I don't know why but I really want to watch this drama when it airs, probably because it's eom ji-won's. She looks warm, sweet and so likeable.
And besides Ojakgyo Brothers I've never watch family drama before.

I actually really want to watch this for Eom Ji won, I am watching and LOVING Can love become money (why are the subs soooooo slooow, whhhhhyyyyyyy?????!!!?!) And I love her and her character - she just has a winning personality and a inherent likablility that comes across no matter what the role. She played agaisnt type in Signs was still freakin adorable. Also am a fan girl of Alex as well - How I miss oldschool WGM. (I went Karaoke a couple weeks ago and flipped out when the background video featured Sinae - No one understood why I was so excited...)

I am also loving CLBM - I watched almost the whole series with subs at 30%.
I can't wait to watch when I actually understand it.
Yun Jung Hoon is one HOT business executive.
The OTP is incredibly tender with each other.

When is Vamp Proc Season two out, anyway?
It was the same director who just finished up QIHM.
He's like the Ang Lee of dramas.
Next he should do a musical, and it'll be great, too.
