FINAL EPISODE RECAP
Hang-ah gets dragged to the border by Dad, kicking and screaming that she can’t be separated from Jae-ha. Dad spins around on his heels and asks, “And it’s okay to be separated from me?”
Oh, Dad. Now you’re making me feel bad. He says that it took 35 years to see family members after the first war—does she think they won’t end up that way? He says he can wait decades for her if he has to, but his body won’t hold out that long.
Hang-ah starts to cry, as Dad tells her that even if they meet again, it’ll be at his grave. Okay, that’s some hardcore parent guilt right there. What is she supposed to do when you say stuff like that?
He leaves the choice to her – if she really wants to stay, she can. He tells her that South Korea has turned their backs and declared war, and Jae-ha will prove to be no different.
Jae-ha meets the prime minister to ask who the hell approved DEFCON 3. Uh, well if it wasn’t you, I’m gonna say it’s the other guy in the room with the power to do so. The prime minister admits caving to U.S. pressure.
Jae-ha tries calling Hang-ah over and over, growing more panicked by the second. She finally answers, against Dad’s wishes. They check on each other and suss out the situation—Jae-ha needs time to talk to both the U.S. and North Korea to stop this from happening.
The trouble is, North Korea has cut off all lines of communication. Hang-ah turns to her father to ask if he did this, and he reminds her that this is WAR—of course they cut off communication (though it was his superiors, not him personally).
He tells her to come back, but she hesitates, as more tears start to fall. Oh no. “I’ll go to the North. If this is the situation, then North and South have completely split apart. And the only thing that remains is war.”
Jae-ha says that the South always has their end of the line open. It’s the North that cut off their end. Hang-ah knows, and that’s why she’s going: “I’ll open the line.” Oh, wow, what a great mission for the heroine. She says that she’ll convey the king’s position and stop this war.
He protests – there’s no way for the two of them to communicate once she crosses that border. There’s no way to know how bad things will get, so how can he let her go? Hang-ah: “Isn’t your heart my heart?”
She asks if the change in situation will change their hearts. They know the answer, but he still puts up a fight, asking if she’s really going to go, knowing full well that war might break out?
Hang-ah: “I want to see Father for a long long time. And I want to see you for a long time. That’s why I’m going. So that I can see you.” He starts to cry. “Hang-ah-ya…”
Hang-ah: “You’ll stop the war, right? I’ll do the same. If you just remember that, then we’ll see each other again. I love you.” And then she hangs up, before he can even say it back. He just looks down at his phone in tear-filled shock.
They both cry for a moment, and then Hang-ah braces herself. She spins around on her heels as the music turns along with her. She marches through to the North, a woman on a mission.
Jae-ha lingers for another moment in the hallway, and then he wipes his tears and mirrors her walk. I love the double badass turn.
Bong-gu gets the confirmation that the U.S. has approved an attack on North Korea, and calls Jae-ha to gloat about it. I love that till the end, Jae-ha’s like, “Who is this?” which drives Bong-gu crazy.
He passes along the military operation as proof and says that it’s really Jae-ha’s fault for attacking via ICC. That day on the cliff he gave Jae-ha the choice between himself or his people—”You chose yourself. You killed them.”
Jae-ha: “No. YOU did.” Aw, yeah. He says that all he’s done is try to bring Bong-gu to justice, according to the law. Bong-gu laughs that in the end the Koreas will be at war and he’ll walk away.
Jae-ha: “No. I’m going to stop this war. And you’re going to be put on trial.” For all of Bong-gu’s blustering, it’s really Jae-ha who has the upper hand when it comes to poker faces, because he believes in what he’s saying. The report is confirmed to be legit, and the situation escalates as Jae-ha signs off on DEFCON 2 and the country prepares for war.
Hang-ah meets with the prime minister who praises her for her loyalty to country, and then proceeds to ask about what she’s learned in her time in the South, like where are the secret bunkers they can attack.
But when she tells him that they need to reopen the lines of communication with the South, he argues that the king is preparing for war and accuses her of caving to her womanly weaknesses. Oh, because that’s evil, right? Ass.
She narrows her eyes but rises above it and asks the very logical question of why on earth she’d come back home then, if she were just madly in love and ready to forsake her country for a man. I would’ve added a knee kick but clearly you are more civilized than I. But he tells her it’s too late for communication, because both sides have their missiles pointed right at each other. Gah, the art-imitating-life of this situation is so unnerving.
Jae-ha prepares for a public address, and Secretary Eun reminds him that he needs to appear strong before the people. He starts to write his speech, calling out the U.S. for their attack plan, and urging the North to show that they are willing to discuss peace.
He starts to write, “But if North Korea attacks Seoul… then South Korea will by any means necessary…” He flashes back to his moments with Hang-ah, on their 60km trek, and when she held him in her lap. He finishes his sentence with a pang in his heart, “…repay the whole of North Korea in kind.”
Meanwhile Hang-ah’s last conversation with the prime minister has put her father in a sticky position, and he goes entirely in the other direction and presents her with plane tickets for them to flee the country.
He says that war is inevitable now, and even here in the North, they’ll be seen as South-friendly and therefore a liability. He doesn’t trust Jae-ha either, since he heard the speech above.
Hang-ah defends Jae-ha’s need to make an official statement as such, but Dad asks how he could, knowing that Hang-ah is here. He says that a preemptive strike isn’t that uncalled for in this situation. Her eyes widen, “A preemptive strike? Are we going to attack first?” He says nothing has been decided yet. Oh crap.
Jae-ha sits down with his general and asks what kind of casualties have been projected if war does break out. In day one: 200,000 soldiers, 1.5 million civilians. In week one: 1 million soldiers, 5 million civilians. And the cost of course in the tens of billions. He looks up in horror, and the general says these are all numbers projected in 1994, so they can probably double them.
Jae-ha sits, literally the weight of the world on his shoulders. He thinks back to hyung’s dreams of peace and reunification, Shi-kyung’s dying pleas to never give up, and Bong-gu’s words that if a single life were to be lost, it would be on his hands.
Hang-ah in turn thinks back to Jae-ha’s promise during the WOC: “Trust me, and I’ll trust you,” and Jae-kang’s question in presiding over their engagement about joining their strength in a time of war.
Her doorbell rings with a delivery. A mysterious man drops off a package and she asks if he’s from China since his accent is different, but he disappears without a word. She opens it up to find Jae-ha’s I’m-sorry-thank-you-I-love-you skincare set for her (aw) with an envelope buried underneath: a copy of the U.S. military strike against Pyongyang.
This is exactly the leverage she needs. She takes what she knows to the prime minister, but only offers to give him the date of the attack if he’ll reopen the line to Seoul. Awesome. Jae-ha is headed to the border to try and speak to someone from the North, and she asks to be the one to go.
He scoffs at her gall to negotiate with him, so she gets up and breezes that she heard about the preemptive attack, “But it’ll be too late.” He offers to let her go as a representative to start the talks, but only if she gives him the date. She says she’ll give it after she comes back from the meeting, since she’s not about to throw away her bargaining chip. Ha.
The prime minister says he needs something too then, and presents her with the only copy in existence certifying her engagement to Jae-ha (that seems like a big leap, but it’s the gesture that’s important). He tells her to rip it up: “What do you need an engagement for when you are going to meet your enemy?”
She doesn’t hesitate and rips it to shreds. Now he has proof of her loyalty and she has access to meet with Jae-ha. The prime minister adds a caveat, to make sure she gives him the information promised—he’ll be holding her father as hostage until she hands over the brief. Damnit.
Jae-ha arrives first and waits for the Northern diplomat to arrive. Hang-ah calls her father to check in, and he assures her that the prime minister won’t do anything hasty (he’s totally lying through his teeth), and the two men watch the meeting via live feed.
Hang-ah walks into the room and Jae-ha lights up to see her. He approaches her warmly, but she remains distant and formal. She puts out her hand for a shake and he sees the earpiece in her ear.
He takes her hand but he sinks when she just shakes it and goes to her seat. She asks everything she’s supposed to—is he really preparing to join hands with the U.S. and go to war?
Jae-ha sits through her barrage of questions silently, which is doubly infuriating for Hang-ah who’s desperate not to lose this chance to show the prime minister Jae-ha’s true intentions.
He finally sits back and asks casually if she knows that they’ll be attacked on May 24. The prime minister freaks out, and Hang-ah’s father hands over the brief to prove it. It’s less than a week out.
Meanwhile Hang-ah flips out that he gave away her bargaining chip. But Jae-ha is still smiling, calm as you please. “What’re you doing May 24? Going to war?” Hang-ah finally loses the cool exterior, “Comrade Jae-ha!”
He just keeps going, “I’m getting married. To you.” Hahaha. Okay, that’s crazy but kind of brilliant. He’s going to set the date of the attack as his wedding day?
The prime minister barks into Hang-ah’s ear for her to get out, and Jae-ha sees her flinch. He looks up at the camera and orders him to say it directly, and stop using Hang-ah as his shield. Love it.
It works, and the prime minister calls to speak to him directly. He shouts that they weren’t behind the terrorist attack, and Jae-ha shouts back that threatening Seoul is the definition of terror.
He calms down. “You die. And then we die. The U.S. hits you, you hit us, and then if China gets involved… do you think that even one person will be left standing on this land?”
The prime minister scoffs at his solution—if they get married, does he think the U.S. will just pat their heads and wish them well? But Jae-ha makes it clear that he’s not talking about sneaking off and eloping, but standing with both countries behind them.
A wedding is cause for congratulations and if North and South officially present a united front, the whole world will rush to congratulate them. In that situation, on that day, can anyone launch a missile at them?
“I’m not doing this so that South Korea can live alone. I’m saying let’s get married and live together.”
The prime minister says he’ll put it under advisement and orders Hang-ah to leave the room. But Jae-ha presses the Big Red Button and suddenly soldiers from both sides charge into the room, guns drawn.
Oh noes, Young-bae and Dong-ha, guns pointed at each other? I don’t like this one bit!
Jae-ha barks into the phone that he has five minutes to make a decision, “Or shoot me.” He figures that even if they say no, he’ll be dead anyway, so why not just die here? He hangs up.
Then they have to sit like that in the room for the five longest minutes ever. Jae-ha: “Young-bae-ya, you’re a sniper, right? Aim so that I go in one blow.” He points to the center of his forehead. Young-bae’s eyes dart back and forth, Dong-ha tenses up, ready to shoot him if he shoots. Hang-ah looks back and forth between them all.
The prime minister paces back and forth. Hang-ah’s father pleads with him to decide. Time’s up, and Jae-ha calls. Has he made a decision?
There’s no answer on the other end. Jae-ha takes the silence as a no. “Then, war?” He orders Young-bae to shoot. If their leader wants war, shooting the king is the way to start one.
Young-bae hesitates. Dong-ha, “Just try and shoot.” And then Young-bae adorably trembles and stutters, “I-I-I j-j-just can’t …”
But then Hang-ah stands up and grabs Young-bae’s gun out of his hand. She walks over and sticks it in Jae-ha’s face. Dong-ha raises his gun to her head. OH SHIT.
She says (at the prime minister), “Do I shoot? Why, do you think that because it’s the person I love, I can’t shoot? I can kill this comrade. And die with him.”
Well, now we know why Romeo and Juliet weren’t given guns. Because then shit like this happens. Everyone just put down the deadly objects!
Jae-ha looks up at her, his eyes full of love, and her eyes soften, “I’ll follow right behind you.” She cocks her gun. Dong-ha raises his to her temple…
And then in the last possible second before my heart bursts, the prime minister tells her to put down her weapon. Everyone starts breathing again, including me.
He asks Jae-ha if this means he’s really going to help them, and Jae-ha says yes. Hang-ah finally lowers her gun and Dong-ha does too. Jae-ha takes the gun from her hand and hugs her tight.
Bong-gu watches the North Korean news report in shock and demands that the U.S. attack anyway—why not the wedding? The contact refuses because somehow the story determined he should suddenly stop stupidly listening to the crazy man. Whatever, fake America. You are so weird.
Jae-ha gets ready to cross the border on his wedding day, and the U.N. tries to stop him. But the Korean troops help get him through, saluting their congratulations. Aw, that’s cute.
And I frickin’ LOVE that they’re getting married in the DMZ. Hang-ah smiles as she gets ready when she sees two officers North and South laughing together at their post. Dad says it’s too bad their wedding has less fanfare than their engagement and fusses over her hanbok, wishing her mother were here to see her.
She hugs him and says she’s sorry for being such a troublesome daughter, but he says as long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters to him. And then he breaks away from her so that she won’t see him cry. N’aaaaaw, Daaaaad. Okay, I forgive you for the guilt trip earlier.
Everything goes as planned and the U.S. backs off their military strike and offers up their congrats, and then the wedding begins. They each walk down the aisle from either side of the 38th parallel to meet in the middle.
Jae-ha holds out his hand. Hang-ah puts her hand in his, and then he crosses to the North. They face southward and bow.
And then together they cross to the South, and bow facing north. It’s simple, and lovely, and says everything.
And then he picks her up and twirls her around as they beam.
Then sometime later Bong-gu faces trial before the ICC. And the reason you couldn’t have kept him locked up till this point and therefore not make Shi-kyung’s sacrifice moot IS? BAH.
He gets sentenced to life in prison. That’s it? What about the tank of carnivorous snakes?
Jae-ha pays him a visit in jail, and Bong-gu muses that he must’ve been dying to see him like this. Bong-gu: “I won. You went to the brink of war. You were scared.” He chuckles that they’ve experienced trauma now.
“When you hear fireworks, you’ll jump in fear. When you hear sirens, your heart will race. Only Korea is like that. A country that has experienced war. That’s why you will become more anxious. You’ll be scared of what you encountered, and only amass more weapons.”
Jae-ha: “We stopped it. I did. We did. Now we have the confidence that we can stop it. They say that the scariest thing in the world is war. But we stopped it, so what can’t we do? Thank you… for making us powerful.”
He turns to walk away. Bong-gu screams after him that locking him up will do nothing to stop Club M from existing, and attacking. Jae-ha stops for a moment, but doesn’t turn back. He squares his shoulders and keeps walking ahead.
Four years later.
Dong-ha (wearing a much more decorated uniform) comes to find Jae-ha, and he comes to greet North Korean soldiers for the new WOC team. Behind him are Dong-ha, Young-bae, and (YAY!) Kang-seok. Where have you BEEN?
They’re old-timers now, the guys who train the newbies. Jae-ha asks about the female soldier for this team and Kang-seok says she’ll be from the South this time. Jae-ha leans in close to whisper at Young-bae that southern girls are really pretty, and Dong-ha sighs that it’s already too late—Young-bae took one look at her and he’s smitten so bad he can’t even train her properly. HA.
Once it’s just the four of them, Jae-ha greets them happily saying it’s been a really long time since they’ve all been together, and asks them out for a drink. Young-bae adds dejectedly that it’s not really all of them. Aw. Young-bae.
Jae-ha looks down and Kang-seok reminds Young-bae that they already poured a bunch of alcohol over Shi-kyung’s grave—he’s probably already drunk enough. Jae-ha muses that he’d probably have collapsed. It at least warms my heart that they still talk about him.
Jae-shin sits on her wall at the top of the city, and makes a phone call to confirm a concert and says that she can make it there on her own. We pan out to see that she’s sitting up there with her parrot, speaking to it as if it’s Shi-kyung.
She says that she’s supposed to go on a blind date tomorrow. Should she go? She looks over at parrot, only this time it’s Shi-kyung that appears. *Mmmrrmph* He opens his mouth to talk and just that alone makes me cry. Gaaaaah, I don’t know if I can do this.
He tells her to go. She asks if he’s mad and he says no. Jae-shin: “I can’t say that I’ll die old and alone only thinking of you.” He laughs and tells her she shouldn’t do that.
“But you’ll always be in a part of my heart. Like a shadow.” They smile at each other. And then when she looks back at him, he’s gone. It breaks my heart all over again.
We pan over to see that she’s actually at the foot of the wall, in her wheelchair, Birdie at her side.
Hang-ah’s father coos over pictures of his grandson prince, and squeals when he gets to talk to him over video.
Later, Jae-ha rushes to meet Hang-ah for a ribbon-cutting ceremony (for the first joint bank serving both countries) and little princey runs up to daddy for a hug. All the reporters swoon, and then princey calls out for Mom, but uses the North Korean dialect version (omani), which causes a giant ruckus in the media.
The queen mother tells them it’ll blow over, and Jae-ha pretends to be stern, but once she leaves the room, he dies laughing. They’re so cute.
But it turns into an issue (with chatter from Club M) and Jae-ha says he’ll make a statement. Secretary Eun thinks it might be best to leave it alone, but Jae-ha argues that all of his people matter, and he’ll win them over one by one, until they accept Hang-ah.
He gets to work, and Secretary Eun smiles proudly.
Jae-ha and Hang-ah stand side by side, ready to go in for a press conference. He tells her the situation is getting more serious. She chides that saying omani twice will lead to war. They chuckle, ’cause, well, been there done that.
Jae-ha: “We’ve already stopped a war. Hang-ah: “That’s true. Just as long as we don’t give up. The doors open. Cameras flash.
Jae-ha: “You ready?” She says yes. He takes her hand. “I love you.” They smile at each other and with a “Let’s go,” they walk forward in step.
COMMENTS
There were a lot of things I wanted for the finale that I didn’t get, and a lot of things that still felt satisfying anyway. The main trip-up for me is the Shi-kyung/Bong-gu war which hit its high at the end of Episode 18 and then fizzled out as soon as Shi-kyung died. It’s not really his death so much as the consequence of it that went so wrong. Had he died to put Bong-gu away, had Bong-gu remained in custody during the almost-war (which by the way was completely feasible and would in no way change the way the final chapter went down), and then be prosecuted, it would have all made sense and I wouldn’t have to tear my hair out. Because how do you even explain that he was brought to trial in the end if the first time took that much effort to get him in cuffs? HUH?
Mishandling that actually took a lot of the villain’s steam away, which I have to assume was inadvertent (because who would do that on purpose?). Sure, Bong-gu was the evil one who set the war into motion, but once that happened, the immediate threat became the world powers and I forgot that Bong-gu even existed. Despite the simplicity of containing an almost-war to four characters, I did like the dramatic climax for the couple, in putting their lives on the line. It’s you-have-to-get-through-us-to-get-to-war, and the culmination of everything they’ve built, from becoming comrades, to finding love, to trusting each other, to letting go. That felt both thematically on point and dramatically riveting, even though you don’t really expect a show to go out with a pair of dead lovers and a world war. Hello, hate mail.
What the two-part finale really lacked for me was breathing room on one score—Shi-kyung’s death in Jae-ha’s eyes. Jae-kang’s death, for instance, happened so early on that we had full episodes to mourn his passing and have Jae-ha learn and grow. And yes, Shi-kyung did already make his crucial impact on Jae-ha before he died. But I wanted that emotional beat. Jae-ha would never have become the king he is without Eun Shi-kyung. And though I loved Jae-shin’s moment remembering him, I wanted the same from Jae-ha. It was the biggest way the finale failed to deliver for me. And now I have a giant Eun Shi-kyung-shaped hole in my heart, and the show ended without patching it up properly.
There were a lot of things that this show never got quite right—the overly simplistic Club-M-is-all-powerful mantra, the over-reliance on wooden day players to give exposition, (Seriously, I can barely stand exposition when it’s served by the most talented of actors, and you’re going to give every bit of explanatory dialogue to extras? Foot, meet gun.) the slow progression of Bong-gu who took a really long time to become an interesting or effective villain. The international incidents were colored in the broadest brushstrokes possible, leading to more than a handful of countries whose leaders seemed more like silly dingbats than powerful movers and shakers. It’s not so much that I take offense, but that I would prefer the opposition to always seem bigger and badder (which makes for better drama) only they were more like dumb and dumberer.
But of course, there were many more things that the drama DID get right. It was shot gorgeously (the cinematographer and lighting team deserve like a medal, or a parade), the music swept me up in every moment and made me feel like it was a living, breathing world I was looking in on. And the cast was brilliant. I’ll be honest—I’ve always thought Ha Ji-won was over-hyped, but here she was amazingly tough, vulnerable, and believable, no matter how insane the situation seemed. She grounded everything. Perhaps it makes a great deal of difference to play a character who’s consistent from beginning to end. Lee Seung-gi had less gravitas than her going in, but gained it through his performance, and though his is still not an effortless kind of acting, it was his breakthrough to the other side—past the façade and into raw emotion. He stole the show, hands down (which isn’t really a surprise, since he played the king in The King). Jo Jung-seok played what was probably everyone’s favorite character, but I really think he’s to credit for a lot of that, because so much of who Shi-kyung was came from the physical performance. A great deal of his character’s innocent/earnest nuance could’ve been lost to a wooden actor, or worse, made to seem dumb, which would’ve been a travesty. And everyone else was already good in an established way—the parents, the hyung, and even Lee Yoon-ji, who’s always been fantastic.
When this show was funny, it hit that darkly funny sweet spot where my blackened heart resides. And when it was badass, it made me pump my fist in the air. And then, when it was deeply earnest about a soldier’s faith in his king or the partnership between a man and a woman in the face of insurmountable odds, it actually got through to my gooey earnest center.
You could say this show is about a lot of things, but it’s clear that the romance is the central metaphor – man and woman as two parts of a whole like a war-torn Korea, always at odds, but always kin. And though actual politics is far more complex than a pair of lovers being able to bridge that gap, it’s the idealistic view that they could, in such a world. What grips me most is actually not that larger idea, but the mechanics of what that relationship needs in order to make it to the end – not just love, but friendship, complete trust, and an equal partnership. A hero who saves the girl is swoonworthy, sure. But a hero who confides in his girl and trusts her to save the day is the winner, by a mile.
My favorite part of the show wasn’t actually the romance (though I loved their epic love story, I promise). It was the making of a king. What this show did right was its character development and relationships, and if you look at it from beginning to end, there are actually very few characters who change a great deal. Hang-ah and Shi-kyung are in large part the same (he gains a sense of humor, but starts and ends a hero, and she learns to play a player, but starts and ends a hero). Jae-shin takes a massive dip, but then gets back to her old self (albeit a better version) because of Shi-kyung.
But Jae-ha goes from a worthless thorn in his brother’s side to a ruler who can stop a war. He goes from someone who thinks the monarchy is a sham to a king who believes with all his heart that he is his people and they are the king. And it’s in the shaping of this character where Hang-ah and Shi-kyung are the traditional heroes of the story—they make Jae-ha kingworthy, through their tough love and indefatigable faith. It’s kind of equally admirable and stupid, but that’s why they’re the heroes. In that sense, Jae-ha really IS the people—he’s the most like us, doubting, questioning, pessimistic, jaded. Even till the end he’s the one who doesn’t want to let Shi-kyung go on his mission or let Hang-ah go on hers. Because that’s what a normal person would do. But they don’t let him be weak.
And perhaps that’s the final step he learns in becoming a true leader—to let his soldiers fight for what they believe in, to put the country and the mission before his heart. I still don’t think it justifies killing Shi-kyung (the lesson would’ve been learned without, thank you very much) but to be a true leader, he does have to live with the harsh choices and the deaths of his soldiers on his conscience. It’s the journey in making a king out of a man that hooked me through the heart, and kept me wholly invested no matter what international debacle came and went. And I guess what’s important is that I feel like the payoff for that was there in the end. And it was. Many other things may have fallen by the wayside, but Jae-ha became a king befitting his hyung’s legacy and his most faithful soldier’s trust. And I like that the point isn’t that he defeated one big bad villain (though of course we need his victory over Bong-gu), but that he finds out that he is strong, and forges ahead to fight more battles and more villains with that power.
And that’s why I really, really wanted Jae-ha to walk away from Bong-gu’s jail cell with this one retort: “I am king.”
BOOYAH.

Dear friends,
After the drama, especially with Eun Shi Kyung's death, I have cried and numb for the whole days. In fact, the more I thought of him, the more painful my heart was. Fortunately, last nights, after writing 13 pages of diary while crying inconsolable, I finally could get over it by realizing that he had gone without any regret.
He loves Jae Shin and Jae Shin loves him. They love each other. Thus, thanks to their love they are always in each others hearts. Even if their current lives pass by, one more time, their love will shine the way for them to find each other in their next lives. Forever, they belong to each other ever after.
Just like you. I feel much better now as if I had been released from the black hole of despair. Now, I feel peaceful whenever I watch his video, look at his picture and enjoy the songs written only for them. Thanks Eun Shi Kyung, thanks Jae Shin and thanks for your love. You really become a part of my soul. I never say goodbye to those I love. I just say see you again. And now, Eun Shi Kyung, Jae Shin: "See you again".
I want to say thanks to those who lay their love to this couple, especially to Shi Kyung. With you, I know that I am not lonely even when I am alone. I wish you all best of the best. See you again.

I'm wondering how my life will function next week knowing that there's no more K2H to look forward to. Funny how I wanted to fastforward the weekend so I can have more of K2H, but now I want the weekend to go slower.

satsuki, I can make heart shape doughnuts but I have to admit mine are only mediocre in taste and in no way compare to dunkin donuts, what more Jae Ha's! Anyway I prefer my doughnuts like beignets with cinnamon sugar.

I bring back...some...facts?
This drama never tired to do so...
Remember when is Jae Ha-hang Ah initially planning to get marry? 15 August and what day is that? That is the day Republic of Korea (south korea was established after rulement of Japan)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_over_Japan_Day#Korea
And what about the day they finally marry ? sadly, I can't found 24th May.. but I found some interesting fact in 17th May ( the day the show was initially ended, but get delayed because of MBC strike, and delayed Moon Sun):
It's an assumption actually, but if it is the real intention of the writer...Daebak!:
'May 17th 2007 – Trains from North and South Korea cross the 38th Parallel in a test-run agreed by both governments. This is the first time that trains have crossed the Demilitarized Zone since 1953"
Cited from wikipedia for page May 17
Interestingly, may 17th also related to Gwangju Massacre in 1980, and also...related to North Korea:
"On 17 May 1980, Chun expanded martial law to the entire country, allegedly due to rumors of North Korean infiltration into South Korea. "
Also cited from Wikipedia page for Chin Doo-Hwan
So, what do you think hearties? :)

I think you deserve credits as much as the writers. :)
And after reading your post I tried looking for something significant that happened on May 24th. I found this:
2010: After South Korea's ROKS Cheonan ship is sunk by North Korea, South Korea cuts off trade with North Korea and announces North Korean ships will no longer be allowed to use South Korean waters

I'm also in a withrawal phase. I've been watching the ending for multiple times especially the portion showing the little prince saying 'omani'. I love the ending of this drama. It's more realistic-meaning the couple still have a lot to overcome.I don't know what I'm going to watch next. Since I'm a HJW fan , I hope she'll be doing another drama with Hyun bin and LSG.After SEGA and K2H- I am more selective with the dramas that I watch. Sega is my number 1 drama but K2H is quite different.I have watched so many dramas but I've never seen one like K2H. I'm going to miss you all. Hope to interact with you again soon with another drama of K2H calibre. Hopefully it will star HJW and LSG or HB.

Was thinking about the WOC gang. Realized that it was made up of a really eclectic bunch of characters that were not placed there simply to get the show going, but they were given a chance to showcase their unique personalites, (except for the one who wasn't SK).
Kang-seok - Big, fearful, knife throwing, bazooka wielding giant, with hot temper. But has the cutest crush on SNSD, Tiffany. And despite his gruffness, has a tender and faithful heart.
Young-bae - I call him 'Goofy'. Looks like one and behaves like one - earnest, clumsy, but extremely loyal. It's so clear that he will follow HA till the ends of the world. I love the way he tripped and fell while looking for HA in the Chinese prison. But boy, does he change when on sniping duty! He suddenly turns into Mr Cool.
Dong Ha - possibly the youngest but has a quirky side side too. I loved the way he posed while taking the pic at the end of the WOC training. Showed that he had a fun side too. Also liked the way he gave Kang-seok the SNSD poster and the tears he showed after SK went to BG.
I need not say anything about the other 3, but you get my drift. They are so different from each other, yet were able to eventually get over their differences and work together when they were single-minded in their objective. They were willing to put aside their prejudices and accept each other's strength and weaknesses.
I believe it was also their love for HA and JH and their desire to see them engaged/married and what it represented that made them work so hard to win the first round of the WOC challenge.
Perhaps the writers are teaching us another lesson here.

Uri eonni is as usual, so observant!
Yes, truly agree with you eonni. WOC team member is an eclectic bunch with their own personality, I love how the writer give them chance to shine. Especially North Korea members, they are the representative of hidden side, Look at Kang Seok and Hang Ah, they look stern & strong, but they have weakness inside theirs, SNSD for Kang Seok (well that's normal Kang Seok-a~ have you got their sign yet, come on, you left Young Bae by himself to guard Hang Ah!), man for Hang Ah. But besides them sit different personality, Yong Bae who just their opposite, seem weak and clumsy, But he has the most gutsy attitude when needed (Can't forgot you'r swallowing key), and the loyalty, and ability to shoot?
As all I can say, the another message probably: Don't judge a book by it's cover, don't prejudice someone :)

Girlfriday, thanks for the recap! Have been a silent reader all the while...
I love TK2H...
Although TK2H don't have an evil/bad 2nd female lead (in fact there are 3 secondary characters), but i always feel that "Kim Bong Gu" is indeed the 2nd female role because he is so obsessed in JH and always try to breakup AH couple...Even Shi Khung, his love for JH is so great (the bromance) that i also can't help but think that it is also a triangle love or more...
TK2H will have a special place in my heart, same as Shinning Inheritance... these 2 dramas are my favorite...

you know, i just went back to read all the DB posts BEFORE the name of the drama and the lead cast of TK2H was confirmed... all the rumored male leads and the uproar when LSGi was finally cast. (JB even had to put a warning on the forum of the post regarding confirmed leads)...
We've come a long long long way, baby. Interesting how there were so much confusion and uncertainty of what this drama was supposed to be (melo? rom-com? drama? thriller? WHAT???!) and the naysayers about Seung Gi's acting and wide age gap between him and HJW.
I'm so glad producers stuck with their decisions regarding title and cast, keep the faith and guided this ship safely to the harbour. And what a wonderful journey we enjoyed in the process!

I L-O-V-E Lee Seung Gi but I'm one of those people who's a "little" bit concern if he'll be able to catch up with Ha Ji Won's acting. I saw his previous dramas, Brilliant Legacy & Gumiho, and I know that he's still have so much to improve in terms of his acting. But oh boy oh man he really shocked me with his performance in this drama. I feel like a proud mama who saw her childish boy turned into a matured lovable gentleman with her own two eyes! LOL! I'm really proud of him...he accepted the challenge and tackled it head on. He didn't care about the ratings and gave his 100% maybe even 200% of what he's got. I'm proud that he's the one I chose to support of all the actors/idols I know in k showbiz industry. Proud to be an Airen ^_*

haha. I am fan but not his fan club. It is very gratifying to see such a young entertainer grow in leaps and bounds through the last 8 years. and to top it, he is an amazing boy, truly.
like the grandma who met him in 1N2D and commended him for being a good young man, i've always felt that his parents raised him well, and they should be really proud of him because he is so level headed and willing to learn. that's probably why he enjoys the success he has today. it's that attitude that i suppose makes all the sunbaes wanna teach him and help him shine.
if i ever have a son i wanna raise him to be like this too... haha.

You're right about his parents. Seems like great people to be able to raise a child like that. That's actually one of the personalities I love about him ~ his humility. Some people might say that it's all acting but I highly doubt it.

When stars/idols/actors/actresses say their Thankyou speech when receiving awards, most would definitely say "I would work harder!" and I would think "haiii... they always say the same thing..." but when LSG says "I would work harder!" and would reply "Please don't overwork yourself!!!"

Me too! I'm so proud of him! I love him more for his character and personality. His looks and achievements are a huge bonus.
Just read his tweet, written after the drama, that he likes challenges and doesn't always choose the comfortable path. This was regarding whether he would MC a new variety show.
I believe that's why he chose this drama. It's unconventional. It's a maverick and of course, he'll be acting in the midst of so many great and established actors. Many a young-idol-turn-actor may balk at this challenge, but SG took it by the horns and won!

OMG, LSG brought it home in this one. I wasn't a naysayer necessarily though I had some slight concerns he'd be overshadowed by the other cast members. I always found him enjoyable to watch but they were all rom-com roles. I def wasn't expecting the caliber he displayed in this series especially since it's a much darker story than he's been in previously. Whoo~ He was knocking it out of the park in every scene. I am def looking forward to his future projects.

Oof, girlfriday, way to nail and articulate all my feelings and thoughts about this drama. This time I can't agree more with what you wrote in this recap. Thank you so much for hosting this ride and offering your opinions, it was a pleasure. Thank you for all the Dramabeans readers too who populate the comments area with hundreds of valuable opinions.
Maybe I have not been personally following every scene (will do that after school ends) but that last scene with Shi Kyung ghost drew out so many tears from me. More than being the perfect drama with every plotline intact, meaningful, and well-played, it was really the raw emotion, characters, and how many of its conflicts played out which captured me. I appreciate a sound story as much as my emotional satisfaction, and though it was 100%, it delivered big time whenever it got it right. Looks like this, and its dark humor was what I was searching for as a break after countless sappy half-hearted rom-coms.
Like with What's Up, this drama set up many threads promising a rich tapestry, but I think it was not feasible to write each thread to its fullest extent with the given time frame. The finale could have been set up 7 episodes ago, and the final fight could have taken 2-3 episodes, much like how long it took to grieve for Jae Kang's death (though that served a greater purpose of character building, the final threat of war would be an excellent climax to stress over. thematically it's a good reflection of past scenes but with larger stakes and proves how far the heroes have come).
Despite that one moment for Shi Kyung, this drama leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling, which is different from how sad I usually am when a favorite drama ends. Perhaps it's the relief from having a shocker thrown in my face every 15 minutes, not that I didn't enjoy that. Rather, some of the greater storylines wrapped up in a beautiful way that still has me beaming after the finale. I absolutely loved that Hang ah and Jae ha bowed to both sides of the border - in a wedding, one of the most symbolic moments is to pay your respects to both sets of parents, and bowing to both countries, as their roots, is perfect.

It's weird but this is literally the only KDrama I felt might have needed a 2-4 episode extension. Not because I want more of my favorite characters but because the story could have benefited from a few more episodes to truly flesh out the last leg of the story. That war plot definitely should have stretched over at least two episodes. I usually hate extensions but I could have taken one for this show.

Don't know if the hearties already left the premise but just want to share this from GF's recap: "And I frickin’ LOVE that they’re getting married in the DMZ. Hang-ah smiles as she gets ready when she sees two officers North and South laughing together at their post."
I've been to the Panmunjom many times and just like Hang Ah, I smiled and even got teary eyed when I saw that scene. In real world, you will never ever see the ROK soldiers smile. They look very intimidating (some are even cute) and I heard that they are black belt in martial arts too.
I really applaud the writers for coming up with this idea. It's really a nice touch and probably just like me, would want to see this beautiful scene to happen for real some day.

Thank you, TK2H, utmost for turning me into a rabid fangirl for the first time in my two years of watching K-dramas. He has left such an indelible impression on me as King Lee Jae-ha.
And, Seung-gi please take the rest you need....this drama mentally and emotionally exhausted us viewers....i can only imagine your state of being right now after close to 4 months of shooting such a complex character! <3333333

Dear Saima,
Stop researching. Just plunge ahead into his music.
I heard people said his music, i.e. mostly ballads, is not their cup of tea. But they forgot who the singer is. He is Lee Seung Gi! He not only sings. He emotes. He acts. He conveys his feelings as if you were right in front of him.
I started with his vol. 2, Crazy for You. And I think it's a good starting point. Vol. 1 is really too green (but I do love 'Delete' or 'Erase'). In vol. 2, his voice is fully open and his phrasing is mature beyond his years.
I am sure you will enjoy his music as much as his dramas.

Hi so far I've only seen "Tonight" at HMV Marina Square some months ago but I dont recall it being any cheaper than buying from YesAsia.
Other than the recent "Best" compilation which Lee Seung Gi SIngapore Fanclub helped to coordinate the pre-order, I bought all the rest of Seung Gi's albums directly from YesAsia last year.
Just in case, you have not heard of the Singapore Fanclub, here is the link => http://www.leeseunggi-singapore.com
At this moment, they are taking orders for the newly designed Singapore Airen t-shirt.:D

My admiration for LSG is growing! He is an inspiration really. It would be wonderful for our young ones to emulate his example of hard work and good values and character and personal development.
I am young once, --if the the definition of young ones is 29 and under ---and even I, am inspired still. LOL

A friend of mine has been studying Tolstoy's War and Peace. And we encountered the line:
"...for what, for whom, must I kill and be killed?"
She delved into pressing political issues right now. Unfortunately, I had little to contribute since my mind began drifting off to K2H. What do you think Jae-ha and Hang-ah' answers would be?

Another "Then and Now" moment...
In ep. 1, a hilariously serious Jae Ha spots Shi Kyung's gun and has a light bulb moment. He raises one finger and uses another to point. "Shoot here. Right here," just grazing it, mind you, don't take out any unnecessary skin or such, a little blood, he will take care of the rest.
In ep. 20, a determined and calm Jae Ha asks a panicky Young Bae not to soil his sniper's reputation, to aim right, to kill with just one shot. He uses his finger to pinpoint the exact dead center between his brows. "Right here." If he cannot stop the war, he might as well be dead when they start it.
Oh Jae Ha baby, you've come a long way!

Better aim and hand-eye coordination? LOL .. j/k.
The best part of the journey is watching the birth and growth of a king. In many ways, it seems to mirror the real-life actor's journey. LSG came on as a infant in acting, revealed himself as a savant and grew into a thespian.
As with the finale of K2H when we saw Jae Ha continue his journey into legend, I think LSG is striding towards a similar path.

Ep 19: Jae-ha: “I’m sorry. I can’t hold your hand or buy you tea like regular people do... That’s why I can’t let you go. I can’t do anything without you anymore.”

Before: During the faux-war attack on S.K. (WOC exercise) when JH's in the washroom his hands shake when alone with SK.
After: Cr: random person (#21.2 )
"JH’s hands no longer shook when dealing with a scary situation (e.g., war) and BG. I think his steady hands are a beautiful symbol of his self-belief."
2. Coward vs. valiant:
Before: JH ducks for cover in Ep 2 during the mock WOC exercise.
After: in Ep 20 a calm JH asks YB to take him out in one shot. After the N.K'n PM agrees to go ahead with their wedding it is JH who quietly takes the gun from HA's lifeless hands!

An Open Letter to all Hearties and K2H dramatizens:
Hello everyone, Anyeong!
It's only been two days since I was walking, breathing, soldiering on earth, but now I'm in limbo-land and I shall be here 49 days.
As you know, I am not a good writer but I will my hardest to convey my thoughts and share with you some things, secrets, that you haven't heard about, to ease your minds and heart. I hope that after reading this, you'd share it with your friends , so they too, will feel better and will not sorrow as much.
But first of all, I want to thank you for your love and support you have shown me and all my friends during the last three months that we have known each other. I would like to mention specially, the fans who came to the filming site and brought us gifts and food - I can still remember the taste in my mouth.
To all the bloggers in the nets - now I have the time to visit all the sites and read what you all wrote.
I know you all have cried buckets and liters of tears than can equal the Niagara Falls so I am really thankful. I worry that you are sorrowing too much so let me tell you this...
You know that I am a soldier, right? And for a soldier like me, to die in the line of duty is the highest honor. To die serving my king and my country is a life well lived. I am thankful I went away like that. A soldier is only important when there is a threat of war or there is an actual war. Without that, a soldier goes home and lives an ordinary life and most often forgotten. Soldiers die everyday, and sometimes for no reason at all because soldiers are human beings too. In this, we are all the same.
I am honored that you all gave me your heart and I am glad to see that even in the net, people from different countries are sharing their minds and hearts. I am truly amazed and it is awesome for me to behold.
Ah, I heard King Jae Ha and comrade Hang Ah finally got married and I give them my blessings. You know I have served Jae Ha for awhile and I admire him so much. I have watched him change from a brat into a cool guy and a wise King. I will never be like him, and I am thankful that I could serve him. Don't blame him for sending me to BG. It was my idea after all.
Please continue loving our Jae Ha and Hang Ah, they will need your love and support nationally and internationally. Thank you.
And the other day, my comrades at WOC came by and drank with me. I love those guys! I truly enjoyed our WOC training and competition days. I will reminisce those times for eternity.
ANd Jae Shin, my princess, you know I love her to death. But now, I hope she will find a better man for her. I am happy I got the courage to confess my love for her and even if I only kissed her once, it is enough of a memory to last me eternally.
I am glad she is moving on, and Princess said she put me in a safe corner in her heart. That's enough for me. Actually being dead has its advantages, I could watch over her and over Jae Ha, HA and over my Dad and this will occupy my time - (we have no concept of time where I am - or night and day, but I keep using it since I am still on earth so I speak as an earthling for now). My fear with princess, even though I love her, is that she will be bored with me if she will be with me for a long time - coz I am really boring... Now I fear no more.:) Of course, I shall be watching when she has concerts in the future....
I am very thankful that Jae Ha has "adopted" my Dad to be his father. Now at least my Dad now has a bright, smart son. :) I will continue to watch over him. When he goes fishing, I'll be there beside him. He'll know --shhhhh- I will bring some fish to his bait.
Ah, you know who I met yesterday? Bonbon!
Yes Bonbon - we had a long talk. She asked me for forgiveness and she said she had a secret crush on me. We had time, so I asked her how BG recruited her and how could she work with a lunatic like BG.
Well she said that she got recruited when she was young and it was more like a coercion rather than a recruitment. At that time, Bonbon was a British soldier in training - and like a WOC game, they were doing a mock exercise - bombing exercise, so they were supposed to "bomb" a factory. Anyway, it wasn't a "mock" bombing but a real bombing. BG was there at the sight and gave Bonbon the trigger and told Bonbon to click the trigger, BOOOOM! there was a huge explosion and all the people inside the building were - no one survived. Later on, Bonbon found out that her mother is in that building! and BG knew about it. BG told Bonbon she killed her own mother because she knew that her mother is working there ( although at that time Bonbon left her mother at home because she was sick - she did not know that BG sent someone to bring her mother to work that day).
So BG laid a heavy guilt trip to Bonbon and offered to "adopt" her and take of her. Bonbon was so grieved that that she went along. She liked chocolates, and BG started giving her drug-laced chocolates (the kind of drug that makes one pliable and unquestioning) - and used her as an assassin. So that's how it was.
Bonbon is very angry and now that she knows that BongGu is in a prison cell, she promised to visit BG in his prison cell and do to him everything that BG made her do to others ... So for those of you who think that a prison cell for BG is too easy - worry no more. Bonbon will take care of him, and all of his magic tricks will be ineffective.
And oh, I also met Tara. You know I have read that some of you are a little bit upset because you think that in a way Jae Ha had a part in the death of Tara. Well, I assure you Jae Ha is innocent 100%.
Tara told me that it was actually her idea to approach Jae Ha and "stage" the date to be given to BG. At that time Tara really wanted to leave BG becasue he was increasingly violent with her and she knew that she will never make it alive. What BG cannot acccept is people leaving his side. He thinks he can buy friendship and loyalty with his money. Tara was deceived in going to BG in the first place, she thought it was only a one night date, because at that time Tara badly needed some cash to pay her debts - she was a shopaholic- but then like Bonbon - she could not get away because she was watched 24/7. Tara was at the end of her ropes when she met Jae Ha so planned that their "date" will be recorded and sent to BG. Tara expected she will die anyway sooner or later. Tara contemplated suicide but she cannot even do that because she is always guarded. So that's the story, blame Jae Ha no more.
I am happy that there is some semblance of peace with N and S K. I hope things work out for real peace.
So there, I hope I cleared things up for you.
When you wake up each day, be grateful for each breath you take. Soak up the sunshine on a sunny day. Or sing in the rain on a rainy day. Have a snow fight on a winter day. And smell the flowers on a spring day. Live and eat and love.
When the wind blows, think of me, but live your life. There is nothing better than doing your best in everything. We are all different, do not compare with others. We each have our own spot in the world and if you bloom where you are planted, that's the best you can be.

I know I have a problem so I am taking active, affirmative action. Hence I am taking the 12-step programme:
1. I admit I am powerless over K2H - that my life has become unmanageable.
2. I have come to believe that a Power (K2H) greater than myself could restore me to sanity.
3. I made a decision to turn my will and life over to the care of K2H as I understand It.
4. I made a searching and fearless moral inventory of myself (and decided I am safe compared to the morally bankrupt John Mayo).
5. I admitted to Dramabeans, to Hearties, and to another human being (getting paranoid now ...) the exact nature of my wrongs (I watched another drama ... drama slut I am .., *blows on pipe like popeye*).
6. I was entirely ready to have K2H remove all these defects of character (in watching other dramas).
7. I humbly asked K2H to remove my shortcomings (please don't ... I kinda like being a drama slut).
8. I made a list of all persons I have harmed (Bon Bon & John Mayo ... many many times in my rabid imagination), and became willing to make amends to them all (NOT! I am also a liar! Obviously ...).
9. I made direct amends to such people wherever possible(yeah, I kill you in many other different ways, Bon Bon & John Mayo), except when to do so would injure them or others (because I will deprive other Hearties of the pleasure).
10. I continued to take personal inventory, and when I am wrong, promptly admitted it (I was wrong to worry that they will fail us in the finale ... I apologise).
11. I sought through prayer and meditation to improve my conscious contact with Dramabeans as I understood K2H, praying only for knowledge of K2H's' will for me and the power to carry that (K2H obsession) out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, I tried to carry this message to Hearties, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Wait a min ... I think I lost the point of the programme ... oh who cares ... *goes back to reading comments*

***** Why all the fuss over SK's death? *****
IMO, SK in less capable (actor) hands would not have been as impressive—impressive, but not as impressive (to the point that people are saying they watched TK2H just for him).
It's the same as JH's brother. He too (in capable actor hands) was much loved by us fans yet we moved on—as a matter of fact, I cried more for his death and only got a little misty for SK's death…
Perspective people; put "SK's" character into perspective—look at the whole picture.

@adjovie:
Truthfully..that's what also happen to me..I cry more when Jae Kang dies than Shi Kyung's death
This is why people need to see the whole picture, not only one details..
At first, I also sad, why don't the production team give us time for mourning. But as I watch the scene reveals before my eyes,,, I can say this, they planned it. They planned to not give us mourning time, because if we do, it'll spent more time than Jae Kang, we know Shi Kyung longer than him. That's their choice.
Thus they place the date of our OTP, purposefully, to ease our feeling.
All I can say is this: the writers know what they do

@adjovie,
I have to admit I am not into Shi Kyung's character either (the character, okay, so don't hit me please).
He's in this drama more for contrast purposes. I also think too much emphasis (from fans) was put in the bromance angle. (His trust and faith in Jae Ha were touching, but they are not indispensable.)
Shi Kyung was not sketched out as fully as other characters. He was very cardboard like, only arcing one way, black and white. That is indeed a very good contrast for Jae Ha. But because of that, his use in the drama was limited. (I had to fast forward the part he went to the dark side. First because I can't stand any torture scene. Second because those scenes were totally unbelievable, in terms of his character. I often wonder if the time would not be better employed to flesh out the background leading to the final conflict.)
Now, Jae Kang is a totally different story. He is a much more important character, in the story line and in Jae Ha's life. He is fully fleshed out, and so a very interesting person. I wanted to know more about him. I wanted to see more of him. His interactions with Jae Ha, because they were significant, rich, and poignant, set the standard for future bromance.
Acting wise, the older actor definitely was surer of what he's doing. His acting, especially in the earlier episodes, was very nuanced. That's a difficult thing to do, as lesser actors could easily get lost in self-importance and artificial glory of playing a king. But the inner dignity and purposes this king had felt so natural and weighty. He was the gravity center of Jae Ha's development.
I understand some people's need for a straightforward hero to root for or worship. But saying that the drama was no more after Shi Kyung was gone? I sincerely hope that's the grief induced temporary hysteria speaking.
Peace!

I was initially upset—no, more like annoyed at SK's death because I didn't see the point. I still don't but I could and can accept it. It is what it is but to say some of the things some have said, making it seem like SK was THAT important to the entire story is just…

I couldn't have said it better myself. I seriously share a lot of the same sentiments you have regarding the Shi Kyung character. That's why I couldn't understand it when some people claim the show's totally ruined because of his death. I'm actually glad the show didn't spend too much time mourning over SK. To me, Jae Kang's death should have much more weight since it's a truly life turning moment for Jae Ha, and so I'm glad that more time's spent dealing with Jae Kang's death (compared to SK's).

Me too. The show is NOT about the love between SK and JS. We love SK, yes, but he is not the central figure. Can't be, cause is character is too flat. Actually, the writers were very generous to give us not one, but two love stories and took the pains to develop both romances.
SK and JS had almost, if not an equal amount of romantic screen time as JH and HA. In fact, almost each time they were both on scene, it was exclusively them. Not so for HA and JH because there were so many issues to deal with and fires to put out.
So I feel that the dating scene, while it seemed placed at the wrong time, was extremely necessary. I actually felt envious that JS and SK had so many lovely moments and HA and JH not as many. It was also necessary because they were soon separated again.
So, fans of SK, be thankful. The writers could have gone the way of other dramas and give the 2TPs very little time together. In fact, it is because of the time given to them that we all love the 2TPs so much.

Apparently (according to TK2H DC) in the writer's script for episode 20, there's supposed to be a lot more scenes of Shi-Kyung after his death (probably as a ghost or memory I don't know). But the PD removed all those scenes.
Of course, we don't know for sure whether that's true or not, but if it's really true, don't kill me for saying this, but I'm actually thankful to the PD for doing that. I feel those scenes will just add unnecessary drag to the story. And honestly... I don't want to see further minutes spent on the mourning for SK on top of the ones we already had (which to me, is just the right amount).

After Ep 19 a lot of people washed their hands off of the show. And, I will have to admit the execution/timing of his death left a lot to be desired
I commented at Ms. Koala's that I wish SK's character wasn't SO memorable that viewers would forget the crux of the story. Don't get me wrong. I loved SK and cried buckets when he died but after calming down and watching Ep 20 the purpose of his death hit me home .

@reglest Haha yea I've seen a lot of those comments too, how they won't watch episode 20, or rather, not even episode 19 (since that's when he dies). And that to them, episode 18 is the finale... didn't know what to say to them, actually I guess I just didn't even want to bother since in their heart, SK's probably the main character of the story. And really it's not my place to comment since people watch the show for different reasons.
but that brings me to this comment...
@Saima "I commented at Ms. Koala’s that I wish SK’s character wasn’t SO memorable that viewers would forget the crux of the story".
^ I agree to this totally. I don't know if it's just me (but most likely it's just me), but I feel like towards the end (well, the episodes leading up to SK's death) the writer spent *too* much time on the SK character that it feels like the main character's not even Jae Ha anymore... making the viewers' focus shift away from the crux of the story, it's like the show suddently turned into "the story of SK"... and i think it's because of all those scenes that makes him *too* memorable for some viewers... having all those scenes placed close together doesnt' help either.
just my feeling, don't kill me over it -_-

I thought I was the only weird one not really into Shi-kyung the character itself. I'll admit, I adore Shi-kyung and got upset when he died, but I wasn't as invested into his character as others. I read a fellow Heartie's comment (it's somewhere here or ep 19, I lost track :( ) that the reason the writers killed off Shi-kyung is because his character has served its purpose. Strangely I felt more at peace after reading that and more so when Jae-shin moved on (going to dates and all) but promised to keep him at her side, like a shadow.
Regarding some of the comments saying that they'll stop watching the show because Shi Kyung died, I kinda feel that they don't appreciate the core story of the drama, which is the North-South divide, in my opinion. Well, it's all up to personal preferences but it's what draws me to watching this show and follow it like a crazy lunatic for 10 weeks straight :)

I think that its because these people are drawn to the SK and JS romance which is the more conventional favourite. You know, a beautiful, feisty princess meets strong, stalwart bodyguard. She then meets with an accident and not only loses part of her memory, but also the use of her lower limbs and needs brave strong bodyguard to protect her from evil creature. It's the stuff of romance. After all, who doesn't want to be saved a knight in shining armour, and especially when the knight is good looking, earnest and faithful? SK is your typical hero - with uniform and all, not to mention the mission to save the king and nation.
On the other hand, the JH and HA romance is diametrically opposite from theirs. Here we have a tough, acupuncture-needle wielding, Special forces trained assassin, who tells her soldiers to kill the immature, good for nothing playboy of a prince on sight. Instead of Prince Charming saving the damsel, we have the kickass damsel saving the prince. Role reversal. It doesn't match everyone's idea of romance because its so unconventional and unique. Thus, some simply prefer the comfortable norm and watch the show for the more conventional, but when the hero dies, their idea of what is idyllic falls apart and they can't watch the show any more.
To me, its like eating the cream on the cake only and when the baker decides to change the flavour of the cream, claim that the cake is tasteless and throw it away.

True, compared to Jae Ha - Hang Ah's Love&relationship, Jae Shin-Shi Kyung's in much more conventional and easier to understand, the typical 'fall in love'. While Jae Ha and Hang Ah express their love through each gesture and meaningful dialogue, which sorta confusing if you don't understand what that's mean.
^was made after observation that most people who regret SK's death and Shipping JS-SK's relationship thought that JH-HA's relationship is not romance at all. Haha, I mean, seriously?? Well, the pair relationship isn't literally shown, but it's palpable in every gesture.
Your explanation hits me, yea, JS-SK relationship is like cream on the cake, It's beautiful but not the main. For me it could be boring if you only eat the cream :)

Dear Osi,
I will stand with you to face the rocks! The soldier-princess romance actually is the kind I thought that has been done to death by ordinary K-dramas. You know, boy meets girl, and then, wow, the sky opens and the sea parts...for no particular reason that I can discern. And the main reason I heart the love story of Jae Ha and Hang Ah so much is that they've LEARNED to love each other; they've earned the love of each other. The progress is not a straight shoot to the heart. It is not idealized at all. It's realistic.
Each to her own taste, so I can only speak for myself. I am just glad there are people like me who enjoy the drama for what it intends to show, not just a side story. Maybe we should be more vocal in our support?!

Am with you. I've actually avoided this and other recaps site for the past week for I don't want to see (excuse me for the word) shallow comments based on SK's death alone. Like, seriously? You would ditch a wonderful drama just because of that alone? I understand that there are plotholes and there are still much more to be desired in that event, but I believe that everything has been laid out beautifully, if not perfectly in the last episode. This drama is about Jaeha's journey as a king, and not a love story for the stp alone. Heck, the princess has already moved on, these people should, too.
I'm so glad and relieved to still see a lot of sensible comments here. Thank you hearties!

Me too. I wasn't really into SK's character even though I like him. But he's too perfect. And I was more devastated for the bromance, then the romance.
I think, I may be wrong, but I feel that it is the younger viewers who like the JS/SK romance better, cos it's typical 'knight in shining armour protects damsel in distress' kind of romance, and SK represents the dream guy of many young girls who have yet to taste the ups and downs of real relationships.
The older ones, those married and those with perhaps some experience, perfer the JH/HA romance, maybe because we have come to realise that a strong man need not necessarily be strong physically, but one who is able to see his mistakes and make the necessary changes.
He must be one who can say, 'I'm sorry' when he has made a mistake and NOT blame others, or worse, blame the girl for causing him to make the mistake. JH could have done that. HA was wrong in throwing his words back at him and calling him trash, but JH was MAN enough to take responsibility for HIS action and decision to send her back.
A man must also be able to say 'thank you'. So many times, we women are taken for granted for our love.
JH showed that he didn't take HA's love for him for granted. This 'thank you' coming from a rich, charming and handsome man who can have any woman he wants, is really something that touched my heart.
And he must be able to say 'I love u'. Some men think that they are too macho to say that. Some feel uncomfortable and think that as long as they show their love, it's suffice. But don't all women love to be told that they are loved?
These three phrases were what bowled me over to JH. Even more that his proposal.

hey guys - that take some strong comments as instant reactions and not a product of much reflection. i have posted many instant reactions myself that as soon as i hit the send button - i thought "now why did i post that?"
a lot of the initial feelings i posted changed after some time - that is why i keep coming back here and reading the latter postings.
So don't take anything seriously - discourse is like that - it is back and forth.... this is the negative side of instant communication. I think we should give ourselves one day after viewing an episode before writing our comments to give time to digest the events instead of hitting the comments before one even watches the subbed episodes.
I know i have done that too - i have written things that i did not understand --forgive me...

I certainly did not respond to those vents. One thing, that kind of 'strong emotions' just puts me off. In fact, they scare me. And I don't want to start any unpleasant argument or worse.
So I think the discussions we are having now are people trying to present a different kind of thinking when things are cooler and more people have had the chance to digest the drama.

Janet, I'm glad this drama don't go into that way, among the makjangness, the most that I can't bear is the birth secret.
As @adjovie said, he doesn't mean as a king literally, but rather he has more power than The King of South Korea.
If you don't mind, please read the explanation under 4.2, @topper @reglest @ravens_nest @reen discussing 'I am King' there, and since we don't reach conclusion yet, I can't move it here ^^ But I'm sure it will shed some light for Bong Gu's 'kingness'

Bong gu himself said something about that back in episode 13, I think. If i remember correctly, he was explaining to his minion that he couldn't stand the princes (probably jealous of them even then). He wanted very much to provoke JH and so he thought long and hard about what to write. In the end, he came up with "I am king" knowing that would ruffle JH's feathers.
I'm guessing it started out as a petty retort for BG but over time he realized he could be "king" in terms of money and power by taking over his father's empire and it became his obsession to prove that that drove him to take on the South Korean royal family as personal enemies.
What I still don't understand is why he waited so long, for his father to legally hand over the reins to him. Given his nature, one would expect him to murder his dad long before since it appeared that he already had his supporters, including Bon Bon and Gopher, to do his bidding. Why wait till his dad was already on his deathbed?

so, the only one, i mean really the ONLY ONE way to stop a war is for... those 2 to get married? no need peace meeting, negotiation meeting, a signep up decralation of peace, etc, to stop a war? well i hope country leaders could learn from this drama. rather than wasted money to stop war or a was that gonna happen soon, by doing such complicated politics acts, its be better if they just let 2 important people in their country (maybe both of the presidents/kings/prime ministers' son n daughter) to get married to each other... and i still dont get it, how come the USA was the one who threaten to attack NK, but it was NK n SK are the countries who gonna created another war to each other?
and really? BongGu just got a live sentenced? i mean this mean killed previous king n queen, and the current king's personal bodyguard slash right hand slash trustable advisor, kidnap the future queen n attempted to kill the current king (in which his count would be, 3 counts of murder, 1 kidnapping and 1 attempted murder), and oh ya, created the almost war on the side, but his sentence was... life imprisoned? dont they realised that this man just created an almost war n could make another one as long as he life?
but.. since this drama make so many things illogical seems logic n acceptable in here, i would assume it is possible n could happen.
but on the positive side, i love the way JH answers BG. while BG speak n boasted alot, JH just get back at him in short line or two, and make BG riled up n go ballistic. yeah, King!!! and thei family scene was adorable. and i love that they didnt shown that in 4 years later she has became the lovable queen. i mean even if the queen was from their own, she would face many critism n dislike, let alone if she came from 'other side'. so kudos for them to make her still under the scope of critism n dislike.
and yes, i like that the WOC seniors didnt forget SK n still talked abt them, and they did it in an endearing way =) and yes, he still appear in the last eps. would be weird without him in the finale =) and i love how JaeShin start to came back to her old strong character =)

@only_me,
Could you propose your scenario in preventing the war as posed in episode 20?
I sense you have not watched the episode carefully. If you have you would know the North has cut off all communication channels with the South. Meeting? Negotiating? Peace agreement signing? I have to sigh. (Do you know in reality the N. and S. Korea are still officially at war, after almost 60 years?)
Don't jump to the conclusion. And, not everything is what they look on the surface.

Umm...I'm not saying that I totally understand the previous comment, but I do understand the sentiments.
Stopping war between two countries through a "love" marriage is epic kdramaland territory. I personally would have preferred Jae-ha stopping the war through grasping his authority position more tightly (b/c this is in an alternative universe) - ie bringing power back into the position of the king - b/c the whole series really built up his character to this point(obviously Hang-ah would aid him in this). The last dramatic love/marriage event (though dramatic and entertaining) really pulls the drama deeply back into kdramaland, b/c LOVE conquers all!!!!! Cute and sweet here, but a little too corny.
I too was very disappointed in Bongu's ending, which to me felt like no ending. The reason why he's behaving this way is never explained, even though the drama hinted at a connection that may make everything reasonable-nope nada. Don't care bout that too much, but bloody-hell, a life sentence after all the epic drama of his great evilness was very disappointing, especially after Eun Shi Kyung was killed off for no beneficial reason. Why choose to kill ESK when it would have made more sense and been more satisfying to injure Bongu?
Anyways, as usual the philosophy when watching kdrama's is always to suspend your beliefs and the realistic and reasonable world. Oh! and expect twists by writers that may not always be great or even reasonable.

erm... "Make Love, Not War"?? I think the writers took it to the literal extremem....If war is declared by the US against N Korea, but they have to launch it from S Korea and S Korea doesn't budge and decides to marry N Korea (essentially that is what JH and HA did)... then technically there is no justification for war. like i said in my previous comment, the only thing left hanging is the writer didn't resolve the other justification - which is that N Korea supposedly attacked US on US soil (ie. Michigan bombing). Cos that is a justification for war, but we just have to believe that N Korea explained/proved off screen that they weren't behind the terrorist attack.

the attack on US soil - michigan- if i understood correctly is done by BG using CLub M resources, And blamed N Korea for it. Remember BG did the same tactic? when he killed king Jae Kang and his wife? - he planted evidence pointing to N korea?
--correct me if i am wrong, it may not have been explained at length but it was implied....
Bern75
May 27, 2012 at 9:06 PM
yup, your understanding of that is correct, luvs. On-screen, writers didn't explain how that was resolved - whether the US realised it is planted evidence. Cos that would still have been a justification for the US to go to war with N Korea (think of the things that happened in the last 10 years after Sep 11). We just have to assume that the US later found out or was given evidence to prove N Korea's innocence.
It's far fetched but I'll suspend my belief for drama's sake :)

ok.. idk why you implied i didnt watch the drama, while all i write not implicated it at all..
YES, i do know they cut the connection (eventho i kinda side eyed how JH still be able sent his 'gift' to HA). BUT, it doesnt mean they really cut it completely. look at the history. so many countries who at war, still be able to met. and actually, i do know SK n NK are still in war. but even now SK n NK are still communicated with each other. yes, of course i love how LOVE CONQUERS ALL even when your country was in a brick of war with your enemy n almost involved in the beginning of world war 3.. but, really? a marriage to stop it? the war in the drama started with USA threathen NK after they suspected NK involved in Michigan bombing. do you think USA will just forget n forgive just because SK King married NK female soldier? if it is, there wont be any war in Afghanistan. and i still dont see how USA threaten to NK lead to NK declared war to SK.. it was USA who threaten them.. so how come a wed between SK n NK could eased down the war threat from USA? i mean the war threat not happen because of their marriage plan, but because they believed NK attack USA first by bombing Michigan.
i mean, yes, i know this drama is abt the love of our OTP. but marriage was the last thing i would think it will ease down a war. yes, NK cut all communication, but as we see even now, in where SK n NK didnt even communicate withe each other, but President Lee Myung Bak see can get his word across to NK (remember the whole NK rocket launch fiasco couple months back?)
in a war, every war, even from the medieval age, a negotiation, etc were possible to take place. just look, for example, Israel n Palestine. there always a way to communicate.. there is TV (hey, NK seems watched JH' speech in the TV), radio, telegram, etc. even if NK didnt want to gave out their feedback, i dont think a telegram from SK King in such situation wont be delivered to the high officials in NK by anyone who get the telegram (they wouldnt dare to put it aside or throw it without asking or reported it to the highest officials in NK, rite). so there are always way to communicate. just as what happened in all the wars.. peace treaty n decralation of peace, etc always have its own way to surface..
i just mean that, well for me, the drama not always abt love JH n HA shared. its also abt JA grown as a King. i was actually hoping he will do politically smart action or whatsoever to eased down the war threath. something that will shown his power n wise act as King. and also to brought BG to prison. i deff never thought that it was only a marriage that needed to ended a war threat made by USA.
and all my question were lopholes in the story, in which they didnt even explain it. i only have 2 Qs in my comment: why BG just ended in lifetime imprisoned after what he did (and JB also asked the same thing in his recaps up there) n how come it was USA who threaten to have war with NK, but at the end it was only SK n NK who we see in the brick of war. all i read were viewers analysis. but actually i wrote that out of my dissapointment.
hey, you have your opinion. you love the ending, good for you. but i think as a viewer i also have right to shown my critics toward the drama.

(Note that this analysis is using logic contained mostly within the story given. IDK if this would fly in the real world but it works within the K2H universe the writers created. Also, please note that my military knowledge is nil and that I tried to stay as objective as possible while I wrote. Please do not take this essay as an estimation of my opinions on war and the military.)
The reason the North decided to attack the South was because they believed the South to have aligned itself to the US. If the US bombed Pyongyang, they would attack the South because it is an easier target to hit and an ally of the enemy. (Not discounting previous tensions between North and South which would add to this decision.)
The use of the wedding to stop the near war was actually my second favorite part of this episode behind the actual tense negotiation scene. Let me just go ahead and lay out my interpretation of that scene, Jae Ha's wedding solution, and why it's my favorite part...
This drama has done a fantastic job of keeping it's characters consistent. They may change, mature, or evolve according to the events in the drama but at the core they are themselves from beginning to end. The moment Jae Ha opened his mouth and asked Hang Ah "What are you doing May 24th? I'm getting married to you." I burst out laughing. OMG! It was just such a Lee Jae Ha thing to say, not King Lee Jae Ha but Douchey Crown Prince Jae Ha. He basically ignored all the tension in the room and just said what he wanted. Here's the crucial part, though: he is actually seriously thinking about how to stop the war. The problem, of course, is that his solution is a gamble.
Let's think about Jae Ha's mindset here. Tensions are high between North, South, and the US. His main concern is that nothing blows up between them and that the Koreas remain united, or as close to united as they've come to be. The only way to do that is to prove to the North that he has a way to prevent the US from firing on North Korea. So he lays out the truth: NK and SK can neither afford to go to war and that the cost for both countries is too high. So he cheekily proposes his wedding solution and he makes sure to say that the wedding will be loudly proclaimed and extremely public for all the world to see.
If the entire world, including US citizens, sees that North and South Korea are seemingly at peace and even having a wedding, the plan to bomb them will not work. How does it look for the US to publicly bomb a peaceful wedding that is paving the way for future peaceful relations with North Korea? Especially considering all the flack the US has gotten over bombing the Middle East.
Admittedly, the US could just change the attack date or even do it as a black operation and keep the US from being connected to the bombing but that defeats the purpose of having a retaliation strike in the first place; they are supposed to be shows of force to prove that the originating country is not an easy target. However openly bombing a peace forum is like political suicide and it would be hard to say the US didn't know it was a day of peace for the Koreas because the entire world was made aware of the wedding date via CNN. Thus, the US elected to back down instead of publicly making themselves out to be warmongering bullies. They also covered their tracks by saying they were never planning to attack and that it was a baseless rumor.
Now, I would have tightened the plot a little by having Jae Ha threaten that one slimy US general with the US operation report, saying he'd use it to go public that the US planned to bomb a peaceful political wedding. Then that would have been the direct reason that US general backed down on the operation and cut ties with Bong Gu without it seeming as random as GF pointed out. Also, I would have thrown in a line to explain that the Michigan terrorist bomb was deemed to not have originated from the North despite the initial reports. (Another example that this drama was definitely not perfect when it came to plotting.)
As I said before, this was all a gamble. Then again, Jae Ha has always been a gambler: he gambled on Jae Kang not making him run the full 60k, he gambled that he could finish planting the bombs during the WOC, and we can't forget when he gambled that the North wouldn't shoot him dead when he forcibly crossed the border to get Hang Ah back when she miscarried. I'm not saying he flips a coin and carelessly makes decisions. Instead, he tries to predict how people will react and then acts according to his suppositions. Where Jae Kang would have backed down and spent time changing paths, Jae Ha boldly continues with faith that he has made the right decision. Sometimes he's wrong but sometimes he's right.
I hope that was coherent. I'll stop here instead of rambling any more. lol :)

wonderful analysis @ravensnest
If I may add,
Jae Ha is a 'gambler' ,perhaps, but he is a calculating one. That is his strength as a King. Because he knows he is doing the right thing and he has faith that other people will see the light.
When he said shoot me! You choose war? you want war? shoot me now, we will all die anyway!
At that moment- Hang Ah saw the light - that is why she herself grabbed the gun and pointed it at Jae Ha...
That picture right there - painted a thousand words - and the N Korean general saw the light!.
Jae Ha truly believed in the goodness of people. That is why he and Hang Ah went on world tour to try diplomatic means. To talk to world leaders in person and make them understand his heart. That Korean people really do not like to wage war. It is all propaganda and blustering by politicians.
He, the King, as representative of the people, want to tell the world, they do not like WAR.
He and Hang Ah absolutely believed in that.
Jae Ha had to put his life on the line because that is within his power - he would lay his life first for his people. And I think he was sincere and he thought about that, or it was a last minute grasping the blade decision. It could be either way, but I believe the former since I am a romantic.
As a King, he does not have absolute control on the political machinations of his country. They raised the defcon while he was away, the gov't can do that without him! So, in that way, the monarchy does not have power. His power really comes from the People - because as a King, he is a symbol of the people.
Watch closely episode 20.
I maybe wrong because i am not a ' political whatever expert' but I observe world affairs .
TK2H to me looks like a "fictional realism" type of drama. It is also a very mature theme.

Love you, @Duncerblur.
I am no spring chicken, so sometimes I have problems remembering that ONCE I was green too! Hahaha.
Oh, well, that's life. When we are young, we think our experiences are one of the kind, totally unique - our love is the first love ever, our break-up is the world's saddest affair, etc. etc.
But as we grow older and wiser, we realize those feelings are so universal. People hundreds, thousands of years ago have experienced them; people hundreds, thousands of years later will still experience them (hopefully!).
Now what is the point I am trying to make? (This is another sign of aging!) I guess it's this: have compassion; love, don't hate.
PS Got to remember to put those words on post-it to remind self!

@only_me:
If you said it ONLY ONE, then I'd answer: No. That's what Jae Ha intent to: peace meeting, negotiation meeting, a signed up declaration of peace. But it was changed because the one who showed up for the meeting is Kim Hang Ah, his fiancee slash love. He noticed the CCTV and earplug that Hang Ah wore. I bet all my chips that the idea of marriage just pop up in his mind that time, why not? He had all the board that need to agree this crazy plan here, heard and watch him. We had known he has that crazy mind, remember episode 3 when he calmed down kangseok? All he need is a push to make them agree.
And about why a marriage can stop the war, as addition to @ravens_nest Comment, a marriage is a peaceful forum, more over, a king! His bride will be a queen! And She is from the side who had been war until this time, how can a moment like this is not a happy/peaceful forum? :)
Notice that US isn't announced their date to attack North Korea yet, and this is how Jae Ha play the ball. Jae Ha announcing that he'll marry that day, to a north korean, in DMZ (yes, he risk his life again) how can US ruin that happy moment? A King, even for a small country is still a king, how can US ruin a King's marriage, and with groundless reason? It's lucky that Jaeha didn't held the wedding in North Korea and invite all the ambassador, since it'll too clear that he want to protect NK if he does so.
Oh, and I'd love you too read my post in #151, hope you get the meaning of a marriage :)
As for Bong Gu, I don't satisfy either. But we should underline that Bong Gu isn't just punished, he is punished through jurisdiction. A legal way, to put the underground (illegal) criminal. After some thought, A life imprisonment is the most appropriate for him, since death sentence will be too good. You know that in death sentence they'll make the death quick and easy right? No, It's too good for Bong Gu. Life imprisonment is the best, because he will be tortured for being ignored (the thing he hate the most) and for sure, no one will visit him. Club M will have their internal meeting to choose who the next leader is, and Bong Gu? Rotten in the cell (Ok, I'm still blood thirsty for his) LOL

I know I'm late to the party and I will never have time to read all the comments here (the real life having its demands)... just had this strong urge of a closure.
This show was not perfect, time to time I had to shake my head or close my eyes, being it some political maneuvers or pure incompetence of royal guards.
However, it still was an extraordinary and strong show. A show which kept me interested from the beginning till the end, never knowing what would happen next and how the show would end... when they shot Hang Ah in the prison, at that moment I was thinking, damn, these writers are capable of killing her, they can really do it, it is possible.
But mainly, this was a show full of people, saram, and their relationships... and emotions. Everyone got his time to shine and for all of them we cared.
I definitely don't regret watching and I'm very thankful to Girlfriday for recaping the show.
I know, this was a story about shaping a king.
I know, there was a love story with that badass NK woman.
I know, everybody is swooning about the Scout Boy.
I know, WOC team was cute, Jae Kang cuter and Queen Mother the cutest.
But as for me, I was touched the most by one NK father and his love for his only daughter.
PS Ehm, show, only ONE kid????

Thanks for recapping the series for all of us.
I too was very impressed with Jae-ha's character growth from one of boy-ish carefree/care-lessness to someone who will march into the north for peace; someone who could and would hold the country together. I think it is in that journey that I enjoyed being an audience of their world more. The love story was good, sweet, strong, but the story of the man's journey to be king was by far the best part of the drama.
That said, these two last episodes were very lacking to me. I felt disappointed that the series reverted back to problems at the very beginning - although the gun-to-head threat scenes were intense and dramatic - which I felt should have been solved by this point. I love the dramatic wedding scene scenario, but....
Anyways, the series in my mind and my heart will be the end of ep18. Alternative ending I created would be a mash of Bongu shooting Eun Shi Kyung and then Eun Shi Kyung shooting him in return. The epic most righteous hero kills obsessed villain. BUT Eun Shi Kyung will not die. His death is not necessary b/c it does not add anything to the storyline since like you said, his influence on Jae-ha has already been established. (Sigh)
To conclude, the couple here was heartbreakingly beautiful, positive love story. The king's journey added the human-realistic draw for the audience. BUT the writers should have just written in a power-nap for Eun Shi Kyung. It was actually a perfect, more reasonable moment in kdrama history to use the DBZ power-nap (ie, hero returns from the supposed dead). It could be justified as a cover/insurance to make sure bongu is put away for good (like the one Booth pulled in Bones!); secret op-in a secret op.

Glad to heard another interesting view^^
Me too, admit the last two episode is lacking, especially in the last episode, BUT in term of editing and camera play. Well, it's actually OK, but as we has been treat by beautiful feast in eyes for the prior episodes, it's a bit awkward when we back to -a-bit-above-standard. :)
Think back, this drama was called The King 2Hearts, the premise is about South Korean King and North Korean Woman. Different with you, I'm glad they back to their title, if not what is that fuss about the name changing? He~
If I can choose, of course I'll choose no death for ESK too. But no, his death is need to make Jae Ha understand to stand by himself, to confide in his self.
About Bong Gu? Well, my bloodthirsty side isn't satisfied with his life imprisonment. But my logic said this is the best, to show the leader of underground that he can put in the law (which he always belittle over this time), and that alone had shown the change, from a Brat prince act, into what A regal king Do :)

May I suggest another idea? Actually, instead of killing SK, could have just put him in a coma. His influence on JH would still not be there and thus JH would have to stand on his own. But after JH stands on his own, one of the last scenes could be SK awakening from coma. Then the last WOC scene would be complete with ALL members.

“But after JH stands on his own, one of the last scenes could be SK awakening from coma.”
That’s where I think the coma theory is not quite right.
As we can see some time has passed after BG shot SK. Let’s not include the death and the mourning here. There are a lot of things happened that won’t take a short time. BG in ICC questioning, HA and JH on their regular life, HA in her social activity, HA in the ICC meeting, the Michigan bombing, JH and HA in Germany, the separation of HA and JH, the diplomacy, negotiations, and discussion did by JH in SK and HA in NK, not to mention the time for them, including BG, NK, SK, the US, to make plans and to prepare anything, and so forth. I’m sure it takes a looong time. And SK has been in coma starting from the shot to the wedding and the reconciliation between SK and NK. I think that’s a really long time for someone to be in a coma, and because of one shot. Well, I don’t know much about medical world, perhaps it's possible.

I've finally been able to rein in my feelings and accept the writer's vision. TK2H will be in my all time top Kdramas of all times list. Now I'm off to watch QIHM.........love to you all

I need a little help. My friend who's overseas finally has some time on her hands to watch this show. Now, viki isn't available overseas. Some commenters had mentioned that by downloading some program (or something) viki was available to them.
Your help would be much appreciated!! <3

@Saima,
I think what you meant was an IP address shield (or hide IP) to fool viki to allow streaming. You can google it using those terms.
Some said it worked brilliantly but I think it depends. I cannot get viki so I tried one. Well, the resolution was not so good. So I gave up.
I think finding another site your friend has access is a better way to go.

Keke, I think I'm over thinking it, glad to heard everyone think the same ^^
DMZ stand for Demilitarized Zone, there are few in this world, one of them is in Korean Peninsula. In Korea this zone run along 38th parallel north, and marked the the teritory of South and North Korea. In korea it was established at the end of World War II. The zone is the mark of the cold war between two countries...just imagine it's like Berlin Wall, but separating larger zone instead.
Goes here for Korean DMZ:

yeah Col sander's comments are so funny!!!!
Doesn't Lee Seung Gi do the most CF's among Korea's celebs???? He certainly didn't forget his products while filming, Seung Gi is getting paid twice? eating a box donut while delivering his dialogues??? Isn't that double jeopardy??? LOL
But then, this drama has a huge production cost so this is a smart thing to do. I wonder how much they pay those actors though, since they use many many actors in one drama and the location shoots must cost a lot too.

So now, I've finally watched the two final eps!!
I wish I can talk each of the scene in the final two but I guess, I'm just gonna wrap them all.
This drama feeds my fantasy. U know, if i go to book store, I hardly find any book that can gimme serious story line but with some cute and interesting love story. I don't wanna read chick flick or freaking serious book.. I want a balance combination of both. And I found that in this drama! The King 2Hearts FTW!
The ending gives me a heart warming and sad feeling. The last scene when they finish, it shows us hope, trust and love. One of the highlights in ep 20 for me is when HA was preparing for her wedding and she saw NK and SK army standing next to each other talking leisurely. That my friends, is the hope of the drama. In my pov, that's what they want to achieve from this drama. And they taught us that that hope is not easy (showed by the triumph and turbulence that LJH and HA have to experienced). There wud be death, fear, external pressure involved but in the end, if we walk hand in hand, keep getting stronger from the past experience, nothing is impossible.
Thank you GF for putting ur insight in this drama without fail. Your thought helps me grow too.Thank you hearties for sharing ur opinion, ur obsession and ur feeling towards this drama. First time I never feel so lonely after watching a kdrama.
Big applause to the cast and crew. The cast? Gosh, HJW and LSG, I'm in love with u both! I've lost my word to praise this two and the team. Supporting cast are the best. None of the scene in this drama made me go, 'uh, boring~' None! Even I love to see how Bong Gu strikes! That guy who played BG is very good. Everything about this drama is soooo good and it will take some time for me to love something like this. This drama has beaten Sega (I was crazy about sega for 6 months) in my fav kdrama.
Ah, I wish i can see more of Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won. If we're struggling to move on, I bet they are too! So everyone, let's cheer for each other and let's keep The King 2Hearts in our heart... for a long long long eternal time!
It has been a very pleasant journey! Thank you hearties!! <3 TK2H!!

@maeye86,
Love your comment to bits! I am a bookworm, so I know exactly what you meant by the difficulty of finding love stories with substance! I love a good romance, but, novels that are only about romance just turn me off. I need the romance in context. It cannot be stripped off other human activities and survive. I think TK2H has done a wonderful job in building as complicated a supporting structure as allowed to depict the romance - if you view the show totally as a romance.
But TK2H is much more than that. Your comment regarding the N. and S. Korea soldiers chatting and laughing together just reminded me afresh. Yes, that's the writers' dream. A dream that's shared by so many people who worked diligently to bring us this drama.
For me, I can say TK2H will linger in my mind for a long time. I am sure it will leave its marks on many Koreans' minds as well. Who knows? Maybe one day that dream will come true. Wouldn't that be great?

It was a pretty disappointing drama over all. It's really more appropriate for cable to tackle these types of issues. They wouldn't need to cater to wishy-washy scenarios and would probably have a lot more lee-way. I guess I can agree that it did a lot of things right in that it was entertaining but it could have been so much more.

I'm agree that it could be so much more, but could you please explain
"It’s really more appropriate for cable to tackle these
types of issues. They wouldn’t need to cater to wishy-washy scenarios and would probably have a lot more lee-way", because I can't get what do you mean with:
1. More appropriate with cable? And
2. Wishy-washy scenarios?
About your disappointment for drama...hmm...do you mean a whole drama, all of the episode?

cable has had shows about modern day dating (I need romance), flower boy bands, vampires, etc. perhaps Asa means that topics that TK2H discuss (reunification, etc) are too niche? I'm not sure about that though - i'm sure reunification is a big topic in korea... and divisive? which probably explains the lower than expected ratings, considering the production quality and star power of the leads. It's understandable because reunification is a sensitive topic for many koreans still.
i don't mean to sound rude but why are you here on this forum then Asa, if you weren't that thrilled with the show?

It definitely moved SeGa one notch down my list, though I loved the show and rated it the same as TK2H. i really liked the topic that TK2H touched on, which is richer and has room for lots to discuss (unlike SeGa which is essentially a fantasy love story, imo).
Coffee Prince though is another story (Gong Yoo! *sigh*)... my first k-drama love that i can't forget...swoon...

my first kdrama rom-com is Coffee Prince and I fell in love with Gong Yoo!
the most memorable scene for me in CP? - the hug!
I would not put CP beside K2H - TK2H is number 1 .
I would make a list with different genres though but overall is K2H.
faves Historical dramas: DongYi ( i love the haunting theme song in that drama) , YiSan ( the King there was gorgeous) , jewel in the palace (the food!) ,jejoongwon - not in particular order. I watched all these dramas and I liked them because, as a non-Korean viewer, it helped me to understand a period of korean history- Joseon era. These dramas showed me different facets of Korean culture and sensibilities. If I am going to spend 20 or more hours in a drama, I have to take away and learn something from it, otherwise i feel like i have wasted my time. My time is my life, you know.
I am open to other suggestions for other historical dramas.
Then I delved into the romantic, modern dramas.
SeGa, Coffee Prince, MGIAG,Shining Inheritance, and other forgettable dramas. Interestingly after watching K2H, I went back and rewatched MGIAG,Shining Inheritance again- SeungGi is cute then but I did not fangirl that time.
The newer ones that I liked was History of Salary Man - Yoo Bang character was a riot!
The I saw variety shows like Strong Hearts and 1N2D, I watched those marathon on YT english subbed - that's when I noticed Lee Seung Gi - I started liking him as an entertainer.
Then K2H - BAM ! I am officially a fangirl LSG. totally became an admirer of this young man.
So after watching romantic and modern dramas - I noticed the same patterns and plots - so the most memorable ones in my mind now were the first ones that I saw just because you always the remember the first time on anything.
So after all that - TK2H is my number 1
It may take me some time to rank the rest because it is difficult to pick one that has all of the elements that can fit my criteria.
Usually, I remember a particular scene, or an actor, or a funny dialogue, or a song (example I remember CN Blue song in Heart strings), i remember Hyun Joon , Kim Bum,LMH, in BOF.
Except the first few historical dramas that I watched , I never really watch a drama in full. I skip over some parts most of the time esp with the modern dramas.
I think after K2H, I will totally change my kdrama watching. It's like you can't go back to eating mcdonalds after you have tasted a really really good Korean BBQ - something like that!
I shall be very very choosy considering that I don't have that much time for drama viewing.
--what am i talking about again???

@luvs - haha the macdonald's and korean bbq analogy!
For one, i will become more selective with the dramas i watch. eg. even rom-com will be scrutinised closely....
i know i will have problems finding another drama to watch. I felt like that after CH last yr. Am going to go on drama break in the next 2 months (real life getting bz too, conveniently), rewatch TK2H, 1N2D and catch up on dramas that have recently concluded airing eg.'Padam Padam' and 'Shut Up! Flower Boy Band"
the fact i am here four days after this drama officially ended does show that i haven't gotten over it. sigh. this will be tough, and I think it'll hit us coming Wed... boo hoo.

@bern,
i don't really eat mcdonalds on a regular basis . But i really went to a korean BBQ restaurant for a beef BBQ dinner and sampled some korean dishes. I will go back again!
My goal is to visit Seoul Korea next year. and eat authentic korean food - like real korean beef, etc. The korean restaurant in my city (i am somewhere in N.America) i went to was great and pricey.
I bet food eaten locally is better. I am a foodie :)

Hmm it doesn't really tell us that Sec Eun did it, huh ? He was still working for King Jae Kang, though his leaked information about their vacation place is really reckless. I think in the beginning he was against the marriage but I don't think he would actually go about leaking the information since he's still loyal to the Royal Family in most ways.
Anyways, if there has to be a person, I might say that it might be the assistant working for Sec Eun? I always have a hunch he might be the mole but it didn't end up that way so i'm relieved :)
HAHA TK2H ended up being so exhilarating I just forgot about this whole thing even though it was bugging me the whole time since the information was leaked.

Last update from WHO on TK2H virus
Scientists have been monitoring the development of TK2H virus. They believe that the TK2H virus has almost run its course and about half of those who are infected would return to normalcy by next week. For the other half of the hearties, they would most probably be suffering from post TK2H depression. The symptoms are:
1. Having a sense of loss or emptiness.
2. Not interested in other Kdramas. (TK2H has set the bar too high. Other Kdramas are just too clicheisy) (that's me)
3. Rewatching ep 1 to ep 20 multiple times.
4. Checking out drama beans TK2H comment section all the time (that's me)
5. Missing Lee Seung Gi's gorgeousness. Solution to this is to watch past episodes of 1n2d and listen to his albums
6. Listening to the ost of TK2H all the time.
There is a cure for this TK2H depression and it is, drum roll please, "Time!" Heard of the phrase that "Time will heal all wounds"? This is the best cure for post TK2H depression.
Friends, colleagues and family members are advised to lend a listening ear to hear about the awesomeness of this drama as this will help to relieve a little of the loss and emptiness. Please be patient with them as they need time to recover from experiencing the best Kdrama of the year.

In 3 days , you'll meet people who are still high on crack of K2H dear! Wait for it. it'll make up for more than all our blank looks & can't -be-bothered attitude! Banzai !
I , successfully managed to get a cousin to watch K2H despite her lament "That singer boy? Not handsome. Dun wanna watch" Because she laughed & was so tickled by my obvious swoony passion & I guranteed that she'll end up lovin' the show & adoring LSG , she's gonna watch it.
Nya-hahahaha!*teng teng teng* ANother one bites the dust!HuHU!

SIGH - i can't seem to move on from TK2H and this blog.
Just re-read GF's comments for the millionth time and am determined to re-watch this whole drama again to treasure Jae Ha's transformation from being a character I detest to a character I fell so much in love with.

Amazing drama. Totally brought out every emotion possible from my body. It was just amazing. Im going to definitely have separation issues and spend a couple of days obsessively searching for 'behind-the-scenes', interviews, articles, and magazinge shoots of the cast. Ugh, help me. When is another drama this good and intriguing going to come along? /// I agree with you, I really wanted a JS & SK flashback moment but it's alright, I can live with the princess's. Just, wow. Daebak. This drama is forever staying in my heart, the characters were perfectly acted out, massive kudos to the K2H team!

Thanks for the recap and all of your wonderful insights gf, all through out the series.
It's nice to see sensible comments after everybody has already calmed down and made much deeper thinking and analysis on the last two episodes. It is because of the fun in reading these recaps and more so the comments that made me come here every week. It made the journey so much more fun, and I have all of you here to thank for that.
I don't really know much and I can't really say that this is the #1 k-drama for me, as I only watch anything that has Seung-gi in it (yes, I know it's shameful but I'm that crazy about the boy), but I'm really glad that a lot of people here consider this as one of the top dramas in their list.
I wish LSG could still do a drama before his enlistment, and hopefully, see these familiar names here again.

just rewatching some episodes randomly, i know we already know HA when mad doesn't want to be touched and would give JH the stare and straight face look and i just realize today that whenever JH is mad he tells hang ah not to call him comrade. LOL. oh, the little quirks of the best couple ever written in kdrama :)
seriously, i miss this couple. :(
didn't intend to write but I guess the fever is remittent at this point.
i'll probably see more minor details now that i'm rewatching it.
love u tk2h!!! ;D

So...after watch episode 19 and 20 I can say this now.
I'm agree with @topper, the last two episodes are seem let down, BUT for me it's in term of editing and rolling camera. While in the prior episode we get zoom and the best angle to enhance the scene, the last one seem..humm..a-bit-above'standard? Haha, and I blame the peril of Live shooting for this, but still kudos for the production team for their effort.
So...what things we should discuss again?
Even in editing term, episode 20 is disappointment (compared to the rest of TK2H episodes), but in portraying & convey the message, episode 20 may be the fullest. Admittedly, this episode try to show us what if war break down? Literally, and figuratively.
Let's start from the very first moment, Hang Ah and her father, guilty trip? Yes, but for me it's more likely present what will happen if the war break down, I can place my self in Hang Ah's father shoe, sure I want my daughter to be by my side, if not...then when will we meet again? War is cruel, we don't know when it'll end, and though said it's end will thing run normally as before? No, definitely not. The Korea War has ended years ago, but the effect still palpable until now :(
The moment Jae Ha meet his own general and asking the estimation of damage, shiver running down my body, the general answer : "in 1 day, 200.000soldiers, seoul citizen 1.500.000, within 1 week, at minimum there are 1.000.000 soldiers, citizen, 5.000.000 people will die or injured. This is the 1994, it may doubled in present. The financial damage would be 100 billion $, but to recover it'll cost 300 billion $. Just like before, Men over 20, most all will die, korean race will extinct" I was choked, and scream "Do you still want to war??", why people want war if that'll cost them much, even in they are won, what's the meaning? One of the best 'information' in this drama
And at last, the moment when the war almost break down, when Jae Ha Tell Young Bae to shoot, gun pointed each other, friends or lovers, who cares? If you stand on the opposite sides, you are enemy. And to say all of this may happen even under one best choice, that just show how ridiculous a war is.
And then, here comes the marriage, as has been discussed before, the symbolization of the real 'reunification' between south & north, and this is just the first step. As @maeye86 said, there is moment when Sk and NK soldier stand side by side, smiling and chatting. How beautiful a peace is? That's all conveyed in their eyes, and smile :) what a beautiful message this drama has.
The epilogue has discussed above, so I won't prolong my blab again, I don't wanna make you boring with mine *silly grin*
All I can say is, TK2H, you are such a pleasant journey, beautiful and meaningful at the same time. But as a journey, it depend on the person who goes through it do they want or able to take a lesson from it. And as a journey, people beside you are also key factor to get it, if they able to pour new insight that's a lesson, but if they just let it passed away, you may find it difficult to grasp the real meaning on the journey. And I'm proud to have this community, Hearties in dramabeans to keep pouring me new insight and meaning, I've been through wonderful journey which make me fuller now. :)
Thanks for all TK2H, hearties, I love you!!
PS: I'll keep stalk and lingering in this thread, dropping comments here and there. Until when? Hmm..like lovecityhall said, it's the time who answer, but now I'm ready for the new journey, just like our Jae Ha and Hang Ah :)
