FINAL EPISODE RECAP
Hang-ah gets dragged to the border by Dad, kicking and screaming that she can’t be separated from Jae-ha. Dad spins around on his heels and asks, “And it’s okay to be separated from me?”
Oh, Dad. Now you’re making me feel bad. He says that it took 35 years to see family members after the first war—does she think they won’t end up that way? He says he can wait decades for her if he has to, but his body won’t hold out that long.
Hang-ah starts to cry, as Dad tells her that even if they meet again, it’ll be at his grave. Okay, that’s some hardcore parent guilt right there. What is she supposed to do when you say stuff like that?
He leaves the choice to her – if she really wants to stay, she can. He tells her that South Korea has turned their backs and declared war, and Jae-ha will prove to be no different.
Jae-ha meets the prime minister to ask who the hell approved DEFCON 3. Uh, well if it wasn’t you, I’m gonna say it’s the other guy in the room with the power to do so. The prime minister admits caving to U.S. pressure.
Jae-ha tries calling Hang-ah over and over, growing more panicked by the second. She finally answers, against Dad’s wishes. They check on each other and suss out the situation—Jae-ha needs time to talk to both the U.S. and North Korea to stop this from happening.
The trouble is, North Korea has cut off all lines of communication. Hang-ah turns to her father to ask if he did this, and he reminds her that this is WAR—of course they cut off communication (though it was his superiors, not him personally).
He tells her to come back, but she hesitates, as more tears start to fall. Oh no. “I’ll go to the North. If this is the situation, then North and South have completely split apart. And the only thing that remains is war.”
Jae-ha says that the South always has their end of the line open. It’s the North that cut off their end. Hang-ah knows, and that’s why she’s going: “I’ll open the line.” Oh, wow, what a great mission for the heroine. She says that she’ll convey the king’s position and stop this war.
He protests – there’s no way for the two of them to communicate once she crosses that border. There’s no way to know how bad things will get, so how can he let her go? Hang-ah: “Isn’t your heart my heart?”
She asks if the change in situation will change their hearts. They know the answer, but he still puts up a fight, asking if she’s really going to go, knowing full well that war might break out?
Hang-ah: “I want to see Father for a long long time. And I want to see you for a long time. That’s why I’m going. So that I can see you.” He starts to cry. “Hang-ah-ya…”
Hang-ah: “You’ll stop the war, right? I’ll do the same. If you just remember that, then we’ll see each other again. I love you.” And then she hangs up, before he can even say it back. He just looks down at his phone in tear-filled shock.
They both cry for a moment, and then Hang-ah braces herself. She spins around on her heels as the music turns along with her. She marches through to the North, a woman on a mission.
Jae-ha lingers for another moment in the hallway, and then he wipes his tears and mirrors her walk. I love the double badass turn.
Bong-gu gets the confirmation that the U.S. has approved an attack on North Korea, and calls Jae-ha to gloat about it. I love that till the end, Jae-ha’s like, “Who is this?” which drives Bong-gu crazy.
He passes along the military operation as proof and says that it’s really Jae-ha’s fault for attacking via ICC. That day on the cliff he gave Jae-ha the choice between himself or his people—”You chose yourself. You killed them.”
Jae-ha: “No. YOU did.” Aw, yeah. He says that all he’s done is try to bring Bong-gu to justice, according to the law. Bong-gu laughs that in the end the Koreas will be at war and he’ll walk away.
Jae-ha: “No. I’m going to stop this war. And you’re going to be put on trial.” For all of Bong-gu’s blustering, it’s really Jae-ha who has the upper hand when it comes to poker faces, because he believes in what he’s saying. The report is confirmed to be legit, and the situation escalates as Jae-ha signs off on DEFCON 2 and the country prepares for war.
Hang-ah meets with the prime minister who praises her for her loyalty to country, and then proceeds to ask about what she’s learned in her time in the South, like where are the secret bunkers they can attack.
But when she tells him that they need to reopen the lines of communication with the South, he argues that the king is preparing for war and accuses her of caving to her womanly weaknesses. Oh, because that’s evil, right? Ass.
She narrows her eyes but rises above it and asks the very logical question of why on earth she’d come back home then, if she were just madly in love and ready to forsake her country for a man. I would’ve added a knee kick but clearly you are more civilized than I. But he tells her it’s too late for communication, because both sides have their missiles pointed right at each other. Gah, the art-imitating-life of this situation is so unnerving.
Jae-ha prepares for a public address, and Secretary Eun reminds him that he needs to appear strong before the people. He starts to write his speech, calling out the U.S. for their attack plan, and urging the North to show that they are willing to discuss peace.
He starts to write, “But if North Korea attacks Seoul… then South Korea will by any means necessary…” He flashes back to his moments with Hang-ah, on their 60km trek, and when she held him in her lap. He finishes his sentence with a pang in his heart, “…repay the whole of North Korea in kind.”
Meanwhile Hang-ah’s last conversation with the prime minister has put her father in a sticky position, and he goes entirely in the other direction and presents her with plane tickets for them to flee the country.
He says that war is inevitable now, and even here in the North, they’ll be seen as South-friendly and therefore a liability. He doesn’t trust Jae-ha either, since he heard the speech above.
Hang-ah defends Jae-ha’s need to make an official statement as such, but Dad asks how he could, knowing that Hang-ah is here. He says that a preemptive strike isn’t that uncalled for in this situation. Her eyes widen, “A preemptive strike? Are we going to attack first?” He says nothing has been decided yet. Oh crap.
Jae-ha sits down with his general and asks what kind of casualties have been projected if war does break out. In day one: 200,000 soldiers, 1.5 million civilians. In week one: 1 million soldiers, 5 million civilians. And the cost of course in the tens of billions. He looks up in horror, and the general says these are all numbers projected in 1994, so they can probably double them.
Jae-ha sits, literally the weight of the world on his shoulders. He thinks back to hyung’s dreams of peace and reunification, Shi-kyung’s dying pleas to never give up, and Bong-gu’s words that if a single life were to be lost, it would be on his hands.
Hang-ah in turn thinks back to Jae-ha’s promise during the WOC: “Trust me, and I’ll trust you,” and Jae-kang’s question in presiding over their engagement about joining their strength in a time of war.
Her doorbell rings with a delivery. A mysterious man drops off a package and she asks if he’s from China since his accent is different, but he disappears without a word. She opens it up to find Jae-ha’s I’m-sorry-thank-you-I-love-you skincare set for her (aw) with an envelope buried underneath: a copy of the U.S. military strike against Pyongyang.
This is exactly the leverage she needs. She takes what she knows to the prime minister, but only offers to give him the date of the attack if he’ll reopen the line to Seoul. Awesome. Jae-ha is headed to the border to try and speak to someone from the North, and she asks to be the one to go.
He scoffs at her gall to negotiate with him, so she gets up and breezes that she heard about the preemptive attack, “But it’ll be too late.” He offers to let her go as a representative to start the talks, but only if she gives him the date. She says she’ll give it after she comes back from the meeting, since she’s not about to throw away her bargaining chip. Ha.
The prime minister says he needs something too then, and presents her with the only copy in existence certifying her engagement to Jae-ha (that seems like a big leap, but it’s the gesture that’s important). He tells her to rip it up: “What do you need an engagement for when you are going to meet your enemy?”
She doesn’t hesitate and rips it to shreds. Now he has proof of her loyalty and she has access to meet with Jae-ha. The prime minister adds a caveat, to make sure she gives him the information promised—he’ll be holding her father as hostage until she hands over the brief. Damnit.
Jae-ha arrives first and waits for the Northern diplomat to arrive. Hang-ah calls her father to check in, and he assures her that the prime minister won’t do anything hasty (he’s totally lying through his teeth), and the two men watch the meeting via live feed.
Hang-ah walks into the room and Jae-ha lights up to see her. He approaches her warmly, but she remains distant and formal. She puts out her hand for a shake and he sees the earpiece in her ear.
He takes her hand but he sinks when she just shakes it and goes to her seat. She asks everything she’s supposed to—is he really preparing to join hands with the U.S. and go to war?
Jae-ha sits through her barrage of questions silently, which is doubly infuriating for Hang-ah who’s desperate not to lose this chance to show the prime minister Jae-ha’s true intentions.
He finally sits back and asks casually if she knows that they’ll be attacked on May 24. The prime minister freaks out, and Hang-ah’s father hands over the brief to prove it. It’s less than a week out.
Meanwhile Hang-ah flips out that he gave away her bargaining chip. But Jae-ha is still smiling, calm as you please. “What’re you doing May 24? Going to war?” Hang-ah finally loses the cool exterior, “Comrade Jae-ha!”
He just keeps going, “I’m getting married. To you.” Hahaha. Okay, that’s crazy but kind of brilliant. He’s going to set the date of the attack as his wedding day?
The prime minister barks into Hang-ah’s ear for her to get out, and Jae-ha sees her flinch. He looks up at the camera and orders him to say it directly, and stop using Hang-ah as his shield. Love it.
It works, and the prime minister calls to speak to him directly. He shouts that they weren’t behind the terrorist attack, and Jae-ha shouts back that threatening Seoul is the definition of terror.
He calms down. “You die. And then we die. The U.S. hits you, you hit us, and then if China gets involved… do you think that even one person will be left standing on this land?”
The prime minister scoffs at his solution—if they get married, does he think the U.S. will just pat their heads and wish them well? But Jae-ha makes it clear that he’s not talking about sneaking off and eloping, but standing with both countries behind them.
A wedding is cause for congratulations and if North and South officially present a united front, the whole world will rush to congratulate them. In that situation, on that day, can anyone launch a missile at them?
“I’m not doing this so that South Korea can live alone. I’m saying let’s get married and live together.”
The prime minister says he’ll put it under advisement and orders Hang-ah to leave the room. But Jae-ha presses the Big Red Button and suddenly soldiers from both sides charge into the room, guns drawn.
Oh noes, Young-bae and Dong-ha, guns pointed at each other? I don’t like this one bit!
Jae-ha barks into the phone that he has five minutes to make a decision, “Or shoot me.” He figures that even if they say no, he’ll be dead anyway, so why not just die here? He hangs up.
Then they have to sit like that in the room for the five longest minutes ever. Jae-ha: “Young-bae-ya, you’re a sniper, right? Aim so that I go in one blow.” He points to the center of his forehead. Young-bae’s eyes dart back and forth, Dong-ha tenses up, ready to shoot him if he shoots. Hang-ah looks back and forth between them all.
The prime minister paces back and forth. Hang-ah’s father pleads with him to decide. Time’s up, and Jae-ha calls. Has he made a decision?
There’s no answer on the other end. Jae-ha takes the silence as a no. “Then, war?” He orders Young-bae to shoot. If their leader wants war, shooting the king is the way to start one.
Young-bae hesitates. Dong-ha, “Just try and shoot.” And then Young-bae adorably trembles and stutters, “I-I-I j-j-just can’t …”
But then Hang-ah stands up and grabs Young-bae’s gun out of his hand. She walks over and sticks it in Jae-ha’s face. Dong-ha raises his gun to her head. OH SHIT.
She says (at the prime minister), “Do I shoot? Why, do you think that because it’s the person I love, I can’t shoot? I can kill this comrade. And die with him.”
Well, now we know why Romeo and Juliet weren’t given guns. Because then shit like this happens. Everyone just put down the deadly objects!
Jae-ha looks up at her, his eyes full of love, and her eyes soften, “I’ll follow right behind you.” She cocks her gun. Dong-ha raises his to her temple…
And then in the last possible second before my heart bursts, the prime minister tells her to put down her weapon. Everyone starts breathing again, including me.
He asks Jae-ha if this means he’s really going to help them, and Jae-ha says yes. Hang-ah finally lowers her gun and Dong-ha does too. Jae-ha takes the gun from her hand and hugs her tight.
Bong-gu watches the North Korean news report in shock and demands that the U.S. attack anyway—why not the wedding? The contact refuses because somehow the story determined he should suddenly stop stupidly listening to the crazy man. Whatever, fake America. You are so weird.
Jae-ha gets ready to cross the border on his wedding day, and the U.N. tries to stop him. But the Korean troops help get him through, saluting their congratulations. Aw, that’s cute.
And I frickin’ LOVE that they’re getting married in the DMZ. Hang-ah smiles as she gets ready when she sees two officers North and South laughing together at their post. Dad says it’s too bad their wedding has less fanfare than their engagement and fusses over her hanbok, wishing her mother were here to see her.
She hugs him and says she’s sorry for being such a troublesome daughter, but he says as long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters to him. And then he breaks away from her so that she won’t see him cry. N’aaaaaw, Daaaaad. Okay, I forgive you for the guilt trip earlier.
Everything goes as planned and the U.S. backs off their military strike and offers up their congrats, and then the wedding begins. They each walk down the aisle from either side of the 38th parallel to meet in the middle.
Jae-ha holds out his hand. Hang-ah puts her hand in his, and then he crosses to the North. They face southward and bow.
And then together they cross to the South, and bow facing north. It’s simple, and lovely, and says everything.
And then he picks her up and twirls her around as they beam.
Then sometime later Bong-gu faces trial before the ICC. And the reason you couldn’t have kept him locked up till this point and therefore not make Shi-kyung’s sacrifice moot IS? BAH.
He gets sentenced to life in prison. That’s it? What about the tank of carnivorous snakes?
Jae-ha pays him a visit in jail, and Bong-gu muses that he must’ve been dying to see him like this. Bong-gu: “I won. You went to the brink of war. You were scared.” He chuckles that they’ve experienced trauma now.
“When you hear fireworks, you’ll jump in fear. When you hear sirens, your heart will race. Only Korea is like that. A country that has experienced war. That’s why you will become more anxious. You’ll be scared of what you encountered, and only amass more weapons.”
Jae-ha: “We stopped it. I did. We did. Now we have the confidence that we can stop it. They say that the scariest thing in the world is war. But we stopped it, so what can’t we do? Thank you… for making us powerful.”
He turns to walk away. Bong-gu screams after him that locking him up will do nothing to stop Club M from existing, and attacking. Jae-ha stops for a moment, but doesn’t turn back. He squares his shoulders and keeps walking ahead.
Four years later.
Dong-ha (wearing a much more decorated uniform) comes to find Jae-ha, and he comes to greet North Korean soldiers for the new WOC team. Behind him are Dong-ha, Young-bae, and (YAY!) Kang-seok. Where have you BEEN?
They’re old-timers now, the guys who train the newbies. Jae-ha asks about the female soldier for this team and Kang-seok says she’ll be from the South this time. Jae-ha leans in close to whisper at Young-bae that southern girls are really pretty, and Dong-ha sighs that it’s already too late—Young-bae took one look at her and he’s smitten so bad he can’t even train her properly. HA.
Once it’s just the four of them, Jae-ha greets them happily saying it’s been a really long time since they’ve all been together, and asks them out for a drink. Young-bae adds dejectedly that it’s not really all of them. Aw. Young-bae.
Jae-ha looks down and Kang-seok reminds Young-bae that they already poured a bunch of alcohol over Shi-kyung’s grave—he’s probably already drunk enough. Jae-ha muses that he’d probably have collapsed. It at least warms my heart that they still talk about him.
Jae-shin sits on her wall at the top of the city, and makes a phone call to confirm a concert and says that she can make it there on her own. We pan out to see that she’s sitting up there with her parrot, speaking to it as if it’s Shi-kyung.
She says that she’s supposed to go on a blind date tomorrow. Should she go? She looks over at parrot, only this time it’s Shi-kyung that appears. *Mmmrrmph* He opens his mouth to talk and just that alone makes me cry. Gaaaaah, I don’t know if I can do this.
He tells her to go. She asks if he’s mad and he says no. Jae-shin: “I can’t say that I’ll die old and alone only thinking of you.” He laughs and tells her she shouldn’t do that.
“But you’ll always be in a part of my heart. Like a shadow.” They smile at each other. And then when she looks back at him, he’s gone. It breaks my heart all over again.
We pan over to see that she’s actually at the foot of the wall, in her wheelchair, Birdie at her side.
Hang-ah’s father coos over pictures of his grandson prince, and squeals when he gets to talk to him over video.
Later, Jae-ha rushes to meet Hang-ah for a ribbon-cutting ceremony (for the first joint bank serving both countries) and little princey runs up to daddy for a hug. All the reporters swoon, and then princey calls out for Mom, but uses the North Korean dialect version (omani), which causes a giant ruckus in the media.
The queen mother tells them it’ll blow over, and Jae-ha pretends to be stern, but once she leaves the room, he dies laughing. They’re so cute.
But it turns into an issue (with chatter from Club M) and Jae-ha says he’ll make a statement. Secretary Eun thinks it might be best to leave it alone, but Jae-ha argues that all of his people matter, and he’ll win them over one by one, until they accept Hang-ah.
He gets to work, and Secretary Eun smiles proudly.
Jae-ha and Hang-ah stand side by side, ready to go in for a press conference. He tells her the situation is getting more serious. She chides that saying omani twice will lead to war. They chuckle, ’cause, well, been there done that.
Jae-ha: “We’ve already stopped a war. Hang-ah: “That’s true. Just as long as we don’t give up. The doors open. Cameras flash.
Jae-ha: “You ready?” She says yes. He takes her hand. “I love you.” They smile at each other and with a “Let’s go,” they walk forward in step.
COMMENTS
There were a lot of things I wanted for the finale that I didn’t get, and a lot of things that still felt satisfying anyway. The main trip-up for me is the Shi-kyung/Bong-gu war which hit its high at the end of Episode 18 and then fizzled out as soon as Shi-kyung died. It’s not really his death so much as the consequence of it that went so wrong. Had he died to put Bong-gu away, had Bong-gu remained in custody during the almost-war (which by the way was completely feasible and would in no way change the way the final chapter went down), and then be prosecuted, it would have all made sense and I wouldn’t have to tear my hair out. Because how do you even explain that he was brought to trial in the end if the first time took that much effort to get him in cuffs? HUH?
Mishandling that actually took a lot of the villain’s steam away, which I have to assume was inadvertent (because who would do that on purpose?). Sure, Bong-gu was the evil one who set the war into motion, but once that happened, the immediate threat became the world powers and I forgot that Bong-gu even existed. Despite the simplicity of containing an almost-war to four characters, I did like the dramatic climax for the couple, in putting their lives on the line. It’s you-have-to-get-through-us-to-get-to-war, and the culmination of everything they’ve built, from becoming comrades, to finding love, to trusting each other, to letting go. That felt both thematically on point and dramatically riveting, even though you don’t really expect a show to go out with a pair of dead lovers and a world war. Hello, hate mail.
What the two-part finale really lacked for me was breathing room on one score—Shi-kyung’s death in Jae-ha’s eyes. Jae-kang’s death, for instance, happened so early on that we had full episodes to mourn his passing and have Jae-ha learn and grow. And yes, Shi-kyung did already make his crucial impact on Jae-ha before he died. But I wanted that emotional beat. Jae-ha would never have become the king he is without Eun Shi-kyung. And though I loved Jae-shin’s moment remembering him, I wanted the same from Jae-ha. It was the biggest way the finale failed to deliver for me. And now I have a giant Eun Shi-kyung-shaped hole in my heart, and the show ended without patching it up properly.
There were a lot of things that this show never got quite right—the overly simplistic Club-M-is-all-powerful mantra, the over-reliance on wooden day players to give exposition, (Seriously, I can barely stand exposition when it’s served by the most talented of actors, and you’re going to give every bit of explanatory dialogue to extras? Foot, meet gun.) the slow progression of Bong-gu who took a really long time to become an interesting or effective villain. The international incidents were colored in the broadest brushstrokes possible, leading to more than a handful of countries whose leaders seemed more like silly dingbats than powerful movers and shakers. It’s not so much that I take offense, but that I would prefer the opposition to always seem bigger and badder (which makes for better drama) only they were more like dumb and dumberer.
But of course, there were many more things that the drama DID get right. It was shot gorgeously (the cinematographer and lighting team deserve like a medal, or a parade), the music swept me up in every moment and made me feel like it was a living, breathing world I was looking in on. And the cast was brilliant. I’ll be honest—I’ve always thought Ha Ji-won was over-hyped, but here she was amazingly tough, vulnerable, and believable, no matter how insane the situation seemed. She grounded everything. Perhaps it makes a great deal of difference to play a character who’s consistent from beginning to end. Lee Seung-gi had less gravitas than her going in, but gained it through his performance, and though his is still not an effortless kind of acting, it was his breakthrough to the other side—past the façade and into raw emotion. He stole the show, hands down (which isn’t really a surprise, since he played the king in The King). Jo Jung-seok played what was probably everyone’s favorite character, but I really think he’s to credit for a lot of that, because so much of who Shi-kyung was came from the physical performance. A great deal of his character’s innocent/earnest nuance could’ve been lost to a wooden actor, or worse, made to seem dumb, which would’ve been a travesty. And everyone else was already good in an established way—the parents, the hyung, and even Lee Yoon-ji, who’s always been fantastic.
When this show was funny, it hit that darkly funny sweet spot where my blackened heart resides. And when it was badass, it made me pump my fist in the air. And then, when it was deeply earnest about a soldier’s faith in his king or the partnership between a man and a woman in the face of insurmountable odds, it actually got through to my gooey earnest center.
You could say this show is about a lot of things, but it’s clear that the romance is the central metaphor – man and woman as two parts of a whole like a war-torn Korea, always at odds, but always kin. And though actual politics is far more complex than a pair of lovers being able to bridge that gap, it’s the idealistic view that they could, in such a world. What grips me most is actually not that larger idea, but the mechanics of what that relationship needs in order to make it to the end – not just love, but friendship, complete trust, and an equal partnership. A hero who saves the girl is swoonworthy, sure. But a hero who confides in his girl and trusts her to save the day is the winner, by a mile.
My favorite part of the show wasn’t actually the romance (though I loved their epic love story, I promise). It was the making of a king. What this show did right was its character development and relationships, and if you look at it from beginning to end, there are actually very few characters who change a great deal. Hang-ah and Shi-kyung are in large part the same (he gains a sense of humor, but starts and ends a hero, and she learns to play a player, but starts and ends a hero). Jae-shin takes a massive dip, but then gets back to her old self (albeit a better version) because of Shi-kyung.
But Jae-ha goes from a worthless thorn in his brother’s side to a ruler who can stop a war. He goes from someone who thinks the monarchy is a sham to a king who believes with all his heart that he is his people and they are the king. And it’s in the shaping of this character where Hang-ah and Shi-kyung are the traditional heroes of the story—they make Jae-ha kingworthy, through their tough love and indefatigable faith. It’s kind of equally admirable and stupid, but that’s why they’re the heroes. In that sense, Jae-ha really IS the people—he’s the most like us, doubting, questioning, pessimistic, jaded. Even till the end he’s the one who doesn’t want to let Shi-kyung go on his mission or let Hang-ah go on hers. Because that’s what a normal person would do. But they don’t let him be weak.
And perhaps that’s the final step he learns in becoming a true leader—to let his soldiers fight for what they believe in, to put the country and the mission before his heart. I still don’t think it justifies killing Shi-kyung (the lesson would’ve been learned without, thank you very much) but to be a true leader, he does have to live with the harsh choices and the deaths of his soldiers on his conscience. It’s the journey in making a king out of a man that hooked me through the heart, and kept me wholly invested no matter what international debacle came and went. And I guess what’s important is that I feel like the payoff for that was there in the end. And it was. Many other things may have fallen by the wayside, but Jae-ha became a king befitting his hyung’s legacy and his most faithful soldier’s trust. And I like that the point isn’t that he defeated one big bad villain (though of course we need his victory over Bong-gu), but that he finds out that he is strong, and forges ahead to fight more battles and more villains with that power.
And that’s why I really, really wanted Jae-ha to walk away from Bong-gu’s jail cell with this one retort: “I am king.”
BOOYAH.

OK... I'm back...ready for some..thought
Do you know what I love the most about this drama? Because this drama make us reflect backs, and thinking, and for each time we rewatch and thinking..we found new insight, which for me is very well built.
Again, I realize that again in this episode. I love how the writer manage the marriage into a crucial event between two country. If our OTP just get marry, then it'll easily forgotten, just a sign above the paper.
I think, the writer using Jae Ha-Hang Ah's marriage as symbolization for what if Korea Reunification really come true. That to said,
A marriage is an unification between two, simply said, a unity. A unity/marriage is (new) beginning for all, it's happy but it need sacrificing for all, said adaptation, acceptment. A unity/marriage does not solve all the matters either, there always be unsolved problem lingering there (Club-M-change-name), there should be new problems arouse- I love how they put the lil kid to said Omani, then causing ruckus, as a symbolization of arising new problem even after the reunification. But if things done right, it will definitely going better (look how smooth WOC held now), all you need is ready to face them, together, hand in hand.
I love this drama to keep me putting my brain even until the very last scene <3

Dear reglest,
I can't stay away from TK2H and this board! Read your comment and smiled and looked at some notes I jolted down... This was from Hang Ah's darling father: if the South can get married with us openly, then...
When Jae Ha asked Hang Ah what would she be doing on May 24th, he was thinking about a man, him, Lee Jae Ha, was going to marry a woman, her, Kim Hang Ah.
But, very soon, this turned into WE are going to marry. The North marry us. We marry the South. The North marry the South. We marry us. Hahaha.
Such a wonderful play on symbolism! Like you said, the marriage is so crucial an event here.
I read one comment on Baidu Tieba, a complaint of sort, "So, the whole point of this drama is for the king to get married?!"
Yeeess, come to think of it, that's it. A very arduous process though. First, you have to find THE ONE. Then you have to make her LOVE you. And then it's not you marrying her. It's your PEOPLE marrying her PEOPLE. The obstacle and stakes just got sky high along the way.
A happy ending has never been more deserving!

Yes, Jae Ha is really a master diplomat to have thought of that. Brilliant strategy, against all odds he thought of a simple yet probable solution- a marriage - not just his and Hang Ah`s but of the two divided nations. It is a beautiful idea and luckily they bought it. Why should they all die in a war. It just puts into perspective what war is - afterall, N and S Korea are one family - why should they kill each other.

Aww...well put AnnMichelle
And again your words led me into another conclusion:
Their marriage is their CHOICE, because there is MUTUAL FEELINGS for each other.
I try to portray this in the context of reunification: If, finally the countries united, it should by they own choice and not because force outside them, the force might be x factor but never the key. And only if they are willing to accept each other thus the reunification will become true.
I love your sentence:
It's HIS PEOPLE marrying HER PEOPLE.
I was chuckling when I read your comment about someone who complain 'so is it all about the king who marry?' It's not that simple. True, a marriage never being a simple. For those who value marriage more than just a signed paper (and I love how they briefly put Hang Ah ripped her engagement paper) a marriage is a sacred and eventual ceremony.
I don't know how it is in west, but in east (Asia) When you decide to marry, it's not just a unification between two people, but also their family. You can see the bride and groom's family interfering here and there. The family should agree first, and should compeling each other to get the marriage become true. By this drama, the writers bring the family to the highest stake: people of a country. As you said it's HIS PEOPLE marrying HER PEOPLE. Do his/her People agree with Her/him? Do His/her people able to compelling her/his people? This question is a retorhic because you can't answer it in one time, it's the time who will answer.
It's more than just beautifully put. Because marriage, as I write above, is not the 'happy ever after' but a happy new beginning.
And yes, a happy ending never has been more deserving, THAN THIS :)

"I was chuckling when I read your comment about someone who complain ‘so is it all about the king who marry?’"
ckckck. That someone must be a true fan of sugary dramas, hardcore romcoms. Well, I'm glad that only in this thread I can say that K2H is a great drama for its depth, not just for fun. Because if I try to explain it to other people--just like that someone---then I'm just wasting my breath.
Oh and interesting point you make, Reglest. Yes, so it's definitely not only about a man who's getting married, but way bigger than that. Thanks for sharing your thought.

I'm bowled over by what you said. So true, so true.
When I got married, a friend said that my wedding ceremony was like a village, tribal wedding. My husband and I come from large families, and yes, I was so glad that it was like a tribal wedding, because I felt so loved and was able to share that love with my guests.
It's more than just between two people.

Love your post! To me the whole point of the drama is like...cooperation may not be smooth but it sure is better than constant suspicion and mutual fear. Especially when both sides share so much culture and history. If they fight, the only people who benefit are outsiders. But for cooperation to occur sometimes you need to take that risk and make yourself vulnerable.
This drama is really layered, in terms of the growth of JH and the themes. I'm pretty impressed. =)

Last night, I actually downloaded and watched ep 20, rewatched ep 19 and just for old times' sake, watched the cute/heartwarming parts of ep 1 - 6. And read GF's comments of every episode.
Came across something GF said in one of her post - it took a WOC to get them almost married (ie. Engagement), must it take a war to get them married??
Prophetic!
Once again, I bow to writers-nim. :)
@regless - totally agree with u and your observation of an asian marriage. Its abt my people marrying his people, and u know what? During marriage prep is when u discover difference that could make or break u (oh, how come they don't give these gifts as dowry, our people always do that, etc, etc). In some asian cultures it even goes down to whether my people and your people are of the same social standing/caste/class. When I think of JH and HA's N-S marriage, it does parallel all these, but on a much bigger scale. Its a lovely parallel.

Dear reglest and hearties,
This is my view on marriage, I always think that life after marriage will not be easy. Living alone can be hard what more if there are two ppl living together? Having said that, I'm no all pessimist about marriage, I'm viewing every possible positive angle about it.
So back to ur pt reg, post marriage, these two love birds still have to struggle, same goes to the reunification of SK and NK. Once the reunite, they still have to face other problems.
But u know what is important in marriage?
Trust.
This drama does not only bring us to just a conclusion - marriage. No,not at all, it starts with the premise of the current situation in NK and SK. NK- they are portrayed via Kim Hang Ah - military raised. SK - Lee Jae Ha - carefree and living leisurely. Once they met, they fell in love then they have to be responsible if they want to live together. That's why their love was tested - the misunderstanding, the miscarriage. But once they established the trust, they worked very hard to achieve happiness and not only their for their own sake but for the whole community's sake.
So marriage here is beautifully designed not just to resolve the war. It's like telling the viewers, now they are married but there will be new chapter revealed. :)
I myself have been wondering where does the plot is going every week, even until the end, I cannot see how marriage can fit into their situation. But the writers did a good job and moving the plot and not only just for the sake of moving the plot but they fill each of the plot with detailed and deep scene.
And of course, on top of that, we got our happy ending and able to cheer for our OTP.

Why I'm not ready to say goodbye...×Teary eyes
In my country we said: Goodbye doesn't mean the end, I'm gonna stick with that.
What to say...I'm sure you guys said it all...
But here are some my thought about TK2H.
In my wildest dream I never thought that duo HJW and LSG will be that romantic, honest, sweet, loveable and unforgettable. I admit, I was afraid how LSG is gonna act around HJW, but o my, the boy became THE MAN, he was funny, he was cute, he was happy and he was HOT.
HJW as usually queen of Kdramas...but there was time when LSG dominated, he had that raw emotions, teary eyes (man can cry/This is just 2nd time I tell that) and hands...o my, HJW was lost in them. Man rocked the suit.
Drama has given me so many beautiful moments, so much pain, so many smiles, so many tears...but so much love. In the end it all about love and all for love, what love, man-woman love, mother-daughter love, king-people love, family love. With power of love everything is possible, to become one, to survive, to keep living, to fight, to kill and to be killed.
The most important HEARTIES...I never thought that drama can do this to people...this share of love, OMG.
So for my journey tru this drama i have to thank you guys...THANK YOU, I love all hearties, without you and
yours support nothing would matter.
For all hearties who are leaving Kdaram land, wish all the best, for you who are staying...see you in recaps...
With love... mtoh

A love letter to TK2H
Dear TK2H
When I first heard about you, I thought that I wouldn't be interested in you. Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won pairing was not my cup of tea. But I was intrigued enough about the original storyline about North and South Korea that I decided to give you a chance. Am i sooooo glad that I gave you a chance! Now Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji Won pairing is more than my cup of tea, it is a cup overflowing with hotness and off the charts chemistry.
Let me count the number of ways that I love you:
1. The most original and daring script.
You dared to tread on sensitive topics and always gave me surprises. I never could tell what was going to happen. It made our relationship really exciting.
2. The most exceptional casting
Every actor, main and supporting, shone in their roles. The main actor, Lee Seung Gi, has shown himself to be an amazing actor. He has improved by leaps and bounds and may I say that in the future to come, his name will be hallowed among the great actors of Kdrama. The main actress, Ha Ji Won, is truly a gem. She is the most kickass and badass heroine in Kdrama. Though she is tough, yet she has a feminine and cute side of her. She is everything I wish I could be including the buff body. Earnest Bot, has renewed girls' interest in the pure, loyal, stoic, sacrificial and dependable type of man. This goes to show how great an actor is he as he could have come across as boring and expressionless. Jae Shin personified the title that she has. She is a real princess not in terms of her lineage but how she carried herself and was brave to carry on with life. The parents, the Queen and Hang Ah's dad were the best mom and dad in Kdrama. Supportive and loving, showing tough love when they needed to.
3. Gorgeous clothes and sets
You spent a bomb on the clothes and sets. You wanted to give me the best. I fell in love with the clothes that Hang Ah and Jae Ha were wearing. Lee Seung Gi looked so fine in those well made suits and made me drool over him. Ha Ji Won looked fabulous in those clothes and me want to exercise so that I can look as good as her.
4. Excellent cinematography and directing
You gave me great visual treats usually found in movies. My eyes feasted on these except for Bong Goo's bathing scene.
5. Introduced me to the world of Hearties
You led me to discover the Hearties community which is full of intelligent, witty, well mannered, tolerant and caring people!
6. Reminded me to see and help to fulfill the potential in my loved ones.
Jae Ha could be the man that he became today because of the love and trust from his loved ones. They walked beside him push him and dragged him never giving up on him.
I have never loved a drama as much as you. You are my number 1 drama in my heart! Long live The King 2 Hearts!
With lots of love

Minion’s whimpering (in grayscale due to the tumblr gif limit *pout*) http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4kh5mmLW81qgs2myo1_400.gif (I must admit that something seems amiss without the whimpering noises he makes).
So there was no way this baby was fitting on tumblr, so I just went the whole hog and made it as lush as possible. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present: Bon Bon’s shimmy (ok, I had promised shimmy but I couldn’t help but give all of her death down to the last twitch, I am so morbid may all the angels in heaven protect me) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13579293/Piccies/b-bon-shimmy.gif

like showing how a north and south couple can overcome daily challenges living in a palace , in a glass house, netizes, citizens ,papparazis, watching their every move, the princess having her singing career etc.....
----i wanna see how Jae Ha exact her `revenge`with Hang Ah -remember the revenge promise - LOL.

I know from experience and a family of much genetic mutation (ha!) that it does not necessarily work this way.
Eun & whoever Shi Kyung's mother ... OK.
Queen Mum & dead King ... OK.
Skunk hair & afro ... not good.
Adoption is fine ... bad hair inheritance (something we can only hope LSG never acts in) is definitely not OK. LOL.

Oh my goodness.
Contrary to what people have been saying that the ending is somewhat disappointing and felt rushed, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this final episode. So much.
Again, sorry for the long post. I tend to write really long comment whenever I’ve been brainwashed by yet another awesome episode in K2H.
There are probably a lot of things I want to say but I think GF and a lot of other comments covered it already. These comments are wonderfully written and mirror my exact thoughts, and I can’t help but smile after reading each one of them. It’s really sad to say goodbye to a fantastic drama because for me K2H is so damn near perfect I don’t want to let it go. But unfortunately all dramas must come to an end, and what’s great is that K2H will forever be in my heart for being a truly excellent drama that deserves all its praises. It is a drama that really takes us viewers to the reality of different human interactions and a drama that dares to confront us with some of the most sensitive political issues happening right now. After watching the first 40 minutes of episode 20 it’s like the writers are telling us ‘This is what’s happening right now, this is the reality. It could happen anytime. So FACE IT’. The scene where the General was telling Jae Ha the number of casualties if war breaks out sent chills to my spine at the thought of a war could really happen at anytime.
This really brings me back to talking about our Royal Couple. I really enjoyed how our OTP’s true love stands the test of time. They have gone through their bickering, their prejudices and their insecurities about each other, and really move forward to even protect their countries with their lives. It’s so refreshing to watch a drama where you see a couple solidifies their relationship and confirms their love for each other early on in the drama, and then let their relationship matures and develops in the later episodes that felt so real and genuine. In the end I really get the scene that they really fought and conquered the world for love. Truly amazing ☺
To be honest, after episode 19 I was still in complete denial that Shi Kyung was really dead. I was seriously contemplating episode 20 might miraculously contains a fantasy element that Shi Kyung just came back to life, that his death is all just an act for Bong Gu or better, get someone who is a complete reincarnation of Shi Kyung for Jae Shin’s blind date. That would make me kind of happy ☺.
Then after episode 20 it really hit me that Shi Kyung is really dead. It’s so heartbreaking watching Jae Shin talking to an imaginary Shi Kyung (remember Shi Kyung’s cute smile?) and watching the WOC guys remembering Shi Kyung. The one thing that I don’t like in kdramas is that sometimes good guys like Shi Kyung dies. It just made the world looks so cruel that someone who represents all that is just has to die at the hands of people like Kim Bong Gu. Yes, this can be the reality, but putting aside that I really wish he’d stay alive and stay by Jae Ha’s side and continue to fight for justice as well as being a symbol of loyalty and righteousness for all. But having said that, I’m happy to see that the legacy of Shi Kyung lives on, with Jae Shin becoming a stronger woman because of Shi Kyung, and Jae Ha continues to be a King that despite facing 99% of improbable reality, he will never give up and use his wits to find that 1% probability of success. In fact, he did just that in episode 20.
There is really nothing I can say about Kim Bong Gu’s ultimate demise. He may deserve more than life imprisonment, but I’m contended that his power is all stripped off, so that he can no longer threaten the Royal Family or anyone else. I really love the ending which show our OTP continue to fight the world hand in hand and becoming stronger because of each other. Things like Club M and international conflicts will never end, and being Royal they just have to face all threats that comes in their way. As long as they’re together, everything will be fine. What’s more, Jae Ha will have a Queen who has the wit to help him go all the way.
Despite some small flaws here and there, this drama kept getting better and better all the way until the very end and brainwashed me into worshipping this drama probably more than its worth. The first few episodes were really the groundwork for bigger and more complicated plotlines. In the beginning I wasn’t really invested in the political aspect of the drama and wanted the drama to focus more on the OTP. However, as the drama progresses, I enjoy every aspects of the drama. If someone is to ask me what this drama is about, I cannot tell them in one sentence or even a paragraph. How can you describe a drama that put so much heart into the storyline, intertwining romance with politics, comedy, war, international affairs, bromance, family, growth and death? Coupled with the unbelievable acting by all the casts, I would just tell them to go watch it themselves, because it’s a drama you’ll never regret it once you start watching it.

yes, for beginners, I would say start at episode 6 then backtrack...because if you do not like political dramas, the beginning episodes looks just like that...
but this isn`t just a political drama - it is all-genres combined.

actually the `foreigner`actors provided the lighter moments in this drama for me because I would laugh everytime - they showed the non-Korean àctors``- i wonder if they are really actors in real life , it is so funny that BG spoke all along in korean and his minions in english. technology-wise it is possible with instant translation - but it is still funny.

I'd like to thank HJW and LSG for choosing this drama.
Ha Ji Won.
Even though I watched Secret Garden, I actually never thought your acting was any good and you were pretty..
Same to Lee Seung Gi.
To me he was just a multi-entertainer who has a nice personality.
I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE YOU GUYS FOR THAT.
You are now the best best BEST actor and actress.
You guys allowed HA and JH character to shine so brightly.
HA was adorable, lovely, and cute, but at the same time so not only physically but also mentally strong.
I know that couldn't have been done without HJW.
JH was such a complicated character who has lots of wounds in his heart and slowly changes throughout the story.
This was just so well-portrayed by LSG.
Lee Jae Ha and Kim Hang Ah are the characters that I would NEVER NEVER forget.
They are the best characters in my whole k-drama life.
+ Their chemistry was just extraordinary.
Whenever they just looked into each other's eyes, I felt like there were going to kiss in any second. LOL
I wish they could be in another drama together.. T.T
++ I absolutely loooooved the ending.
but... I just don't know why.. I feel so empty.
I feel like there are more eps to come out.
Maybe cuz the last scene in the last ep was really similar to the last scene in the 4th ep (which was my favorite).
I can't stop refreshing the forum and the recap page..
DSJFLKSJKLSJFK I'm going crazzzy.
I don't even feel like watching any of the new dramas.
TK2H I'LL MISS YOU SO MUCH..
I'LL NEVVVER FORGET YOU.
I can't wait till the Director's cut DVD to come out!

Lee Seung Gi`s face exudes smarts. His face is a face of a thinking, wise, intelligent person. He has the most approachable face. He looks ordinary yet he can exude authority. I forget that he is only 25 year old because he IS a King in Jae Ha- he has that aura of a noble.
I really like Lee Seung Gi in 1N2D, he is so playful and adorable and innocent and wily . He is so witty and charming as MC in Strong Hearts. And his voice - so manly, his smile so sweet and goofy. How can one person be almost perfect in looks and character and smarts.... ayayayayayay

LSG doesn't have the 'drop-dead' gorgeous, chiselled look, neither does he have the pretty flower boy look. But he has a face that can show a variety of looks. He CAN look pretty, he CAN look gorgeous and hot, he CAN look playful and cute. He is also blessed with a very expressive face. In this drama alone, we have seen the numerous expressions he has been able to emote. Playful, cute, arrogant, indifferent, jealous, angry, sad, troubled, grieved, loving. Please feel free to add on.

I didn't think he was good looking last time. But I fell in love with him after watching TK2H. He is everything that you have described. And I would like to add that he looks real not artifical. After watching quite a few Kdramas, I was getting sick of the almost similar looks among the actors and actresses. he is like a breath of fresh air, so genuine and relatable.

"I was getting sick of the almost similar looks among the actors and actresses.”

@yellow buttercup:
LOL, I have the same collage who do so. But when we were on travel, I watch MGIG with her beside me, she was mocking his photo (well, Seung Gi, you must admit, your MGIG style is a big NO NO!), but when she saw his smile she said, "How can a man smile that beautiful?" And was charmed by him. I don't give her TK2H now, but if I do, I'm sure she'll crazy head over heel to him.
Conclusion: my suggestion is, let her see Seung Gi in moving scene kkk~ No one can resist him in that

Yes, intelligence is so attractive!
The thing with Seung Gi is how genuine he comes across. I've heard him say before that he's not very confident about his looks (and some have even asked why is his nose so big, rude fellas!) but he doesn't let that bother him or hold him back. Perhaps that may be his greatest asset because it allows him to focus on delivering the goods, be it singing, acting or MC'ing. Some other idols often seem more pre-occupied with their looks/image which makes them come across as fake.
I know it's crazy how we talk like we really KNOW him but that's the vibe I get from him - what you see is what you get. And that, is his charm.

You are right. Since Secret Garden was the most popular of all and somehow, it didn't really call for much acting from her, so people think she is just ordinary. But for those who know HJW... her track record..probably like me who followed her every drama and movie, I know from my heart her top notch caliber, and the kind of acting she can pull off. LSG is aware of that so he calls her the best actress of her generation. She is indeed respectable in that aspect.

^ True that. A lot of people probably first knew her/or came to love her through Secret Garden since it was such a big hit (especially internationally). But as some of you mentioned, I too feel that her role in it didn't require that much of her in terms of acting.
I would've concurred with those people (that don't think much of her in terms of acting) if I hadn't already watched her Hwang Ji Ni and Damo before.

Having watched her in SeGa, WHIB, Hwangjini and Sector 7, I think HJW herself is also probably very pleased that she picked this project. Her acting skills and range were really stretched in this drama. I've never seen so many sides of her in a single drama . This must be definitely be attributed to how Kim Hang Ah was written. Kudos to the writers and HJW for pulling their vision off.
Can't wait to watch Damo soon.

I'm not watching ep 19 and 20 with subs yet. Not ready and still juggling with other stuff.
But I think I need to give u hearties my greatest gratitude for participating last night project, the #TK2H world trending project.
I could not list the name, it's a loooong list! We even have Ha Ji Won's fan to join and Airen, of course! Everyone went 'favouriting' and retweeting each other last night! Great party, indeed!!
Did we make it world trending?
Sadly no.
But one thing for sure, I enjoyed watching the live streaming together with other Hearties. Like what I tweeted yesterday, it feels like watching the final ep in a big cinema with people all over the world! Hearties with different background, culture and language but we are all one when it comes to our love to The King 2 Hearts. -- (altho most of us went 'we need subs!! now! !lol :P)
Prolly because the different time zone so we cudn't get as many hearties to tweet during the project. Nevertheless, it was overwhelming to see everyone keep on cheering each other, expressing their love to the cast and all hearties. This kinda event made me realise, we will never walk alone. All we need is good company to support each other. Just like the relationship JH-HA-SK-JS and the rest of the characters had in TK2H.
TBH, this is my first time being so active in DB, but I this is one of the best experience I have with kdramaland.
Thank you everyone. Thank you for your tweets and your efforts. Eventhough atm I feel like there's a hole in my heart after this drama ended yesterday, I know that I have other Hearties that I can still spazz with and I've built great 'twittership' and 'commentship' via Heartiesship. If only u know how much this means for a person who usually felt alone and lonely after watching kdrama. lol!!
Again, kamsahamnida!!
Man, I think I'm a bit cheesy here... well, I learnt this from the king of cheese (JH, ep 19). XD
(and no, I won't say goodbye just yet) :P

I love that in the end, it was Eun TAe who was Jae Ha`s chief adviser and he was a strong support for Jae Ha. Jae Ha did a good thing in forgiving Sec Eun Tae and putting him back in his post because he is an invaluable resource, what with his 30 years experience. Jae Ha is very wise in this way, a great leader always surrounds himself with great people.
What I like about Jae Ha is he is very open and is not threatened by other people smarter than him. He is very aware of his own weaknesses and is the first to admit it. He is not threatened by a strong and wise woman and he never felt insecure with Hang Ah. This is what I like with the relationship . Both Hang Ah and Jae Ha - after the initial misunderstandings - were very secure in each other`s love and trusted each other implicitly.
The last scene where HA pointed a gun at JH - what a Shakesperean moment...Romeo and Juliet, everyone..
The do love each other to death.....aaahhhhh if only - they can be real life...
I am wondering what their (LSG and HA) mental and emotional state right now. It must be hard to fall in love with a character and then switch off those emotions when the director says CUT and filming is over....
Even I am a little bit depressed now that the drama is over, how much more them..

But u know, if JH said that, he would be vindictive. Which he is not, because he has grown wiser and beyond the person who holds grudges. Besides, his weapon of choice has been to ignore the fly-of-a-person named BG, which is what he did. He heard BG's threats all right, he stopped to listen. But he chose not to pick up that fight. To me, that showed a new level of maturity.
Its my belief that the best punishment for meglalomanics like BG is to be ignored and forgotten.

I agree. It would have been easier for JH to retort back. His old self would have done that - you know how he carries a grudge - and loves to be one up. But the newly reformed and more confident and wise JH decides to let it go. It's more difficult, but more dignified and royal.
Remember when he pulled the gun at HA, and tried to justify the action to JK? He said that it was a natural reaction - guns were pointing at him, he thought that he was being betrayed. But JK told him that he should not have because he was royalty.
Royals cannot react the way normal people do. They have to be above the norm. JH proved in that scene that he was every bit a king by NOT replying.

actually even normal us can react with dignity. It's rising beyond your instincts to hit back, and instead taking a breath to assess before deciding whether this battle is worth picking up a fight. and BG is not worth the fight anymore cos he's behind bars.
In terms of character growth, it shows JH has developed a sense of maturity. It's something we can learn too, can't we? ;) i'll like to think it makes the world a better place.

I just finished marathoning eps 19 and 20, and came straight here. Thank you so much girlfriday. I love every bit of your commentary, it is really insightful.
I was all ready to declare TK2H as my favourite kdrama ever, but like many others, I felt somewhat let down by the final 2 eps. What did Eun Shi Kyung die for, and why must he die? Why was it so easy to get Kim Bong Gu to go on trial eventually? (I literally screamed "Huh?!" at my laptop screen, ha.)
That said, TK2H is still the first drama that got me so emotionally invested. It really was my crack drama. I cried so much throughout the course of the drama, and I literally bawled till I had no tears left in the final 2 eps (during the Shi Kyung parts). My eyes are so in pain right now. But I'm sadder that my crack drama is over. :(
Thank you Seung Gi oppa, Ha Ji Won unni, Jo Jung Seok ssi, Lee Yoon Ji ssi and the rest of the cast for their brilliant acting. The cast never failed us. Special props to PD Lee too, for the awesome directing.

After the disaster ending of Fashion King (why did I torture myself?) and the meh ending of Feast of the Gods (just didn't satisfy as it could have), this ending was like ooey gooey ice cream, covered in layers of Magic Shell, with whipped cream on top, and fresh, chocolate dipped strawberries all around it. Loved it! Yes, there was the death, but you know, it was an understandable (even if I didn't like it), heroic death. Unlike other dramas, which kill off characters and leave you staring at the screen, head cocked, completely baffled and betrayed. Kudos to the writers, actors, and production staff. They made a classic!

Shi Kyung's death really took the wind out of my sails. I was so hurt by it. I can understand everyone's comments about his death helping JH mature as a King. But the fangirl in me was hoping for a reunion with the Princess and some happy romance with them. Maybe if he was shot and badly injured but NOT die. Not Him.
I will say, that for all the evil of BonGu, his downfall should have been a little more dramatic in a way. Embarrassed on a more grandiose scale before the world. The actor did an excellent job of portraying a maniacal psychopath.
BonBon met a fitting end.
Ha Ji Won is just a badass. Not much needs to be said. She was the perfect combination of a soldier, sexy vixen, and supportive wife.
I thought the Princess gave an amazing performance. Her expressions broke my heart. She was so committed to the role and you instantly connected with her.
It was a great drama. Still miss Shi Kyung.

Like what GF said, there is a big hole named SHIKYUNG's death which improperly patched, there is also the same hole in my heart. Maybe if this drama was given more time, then we'll see more about his role shaping the king, or better he is ALIVE.
I am also givin hope for 'conspiracy theory' like death-fake-announcement, and I seriously hope so. definitely a huge hole.
i still think to this day and i know we don't care about ratings but the network does and so does korea , but had it been good they might have extended it even with just one episode.
don't get me wrong, this drama is really quality writing but it fell short for me on the last 2 episodes. it felt RUSHED. i would have wanted to have like what GF said the emotional beat on jae ha's part on shi kyung's death (WHHHHHYYYYY? writer why?!!!! )because like hang ah he is a central part of this drama but we didn't get that :( saddens me.
the worst part of the writing was bong gu's and i don't need to say more GF already said it for me.
sigh, i'll really miss shi kyung.

I get it, usually when it comes to the touching scene, the pace slow on, like when Jae Shin register his inability to walk anymore, but this time is not. Just like you said, it felt RUSHED, but I noticed that the production team did their best effort to cover it.
About additional episodes, IF the writer choose to gives Jae Ha and Hang Ah, and all personality to mourn about Shi Kyung, it'll spent more than one, maybe two or three episodes, because Shi Kyung already there for long time. Thus, I understand why they can't do so.
And for sure, if they give Jae Ha a beat of mourning for Shi Kyung, I'm sure it'll shape our understanding about 'the importance' (not necessity) of Shikyung's death in shaping our king.
Yes, and Bong Gu, and Bon Bon too, I think they were initially prepared for some large acts, maybe related to their way of thought. But this, again must be cut because the 'number of episode' doesn't support it.
Sometimes I feel it isn't fair when rating (and popularity) talks, some drama get extension and the story become lame. This is the first time in my kdramajourney that I agree for a drama to get extension, not to change it's path, because I love the ending though, but to carve a better understanding for us.

I totally agree. I'm also sad at the fact that they did not give Jae Ha a scene to mourn the death of his loyal brother, Shi Kyung... Jae Shin had her moment, Jae Ha should have it too. :(

I love the last scene when JH and WOC team had a reunion at the palace and they mentioned SK. SK is much loved by all. The good die young even in movies. Because of all the reasons you have stated - SK will linger long in our collective kdrama memories. Perhaps even longer than our beloved JH and HA.

yeah -
i watched epi 20 again and JS/SK hole is evident. JS was alone outside at night - her and the bird (after the dream appearance of SK) - JS looked so forlorn in her chair with the parrot - bravely facing her new life. ouchhhhhh...
--- another scene..
in the last scene where the Queen, JH, HA and cute little boy were sitting around the living room? Jae Shin should be in that room as well - it was, after all, a family moment. I felt like JS should be sitting in that room with them too.
--Why, even Yong Bae found love ..:)
-- they missed a line that would have stated that Kang Sheok got over his Tiffany-obsession? ...LOL
------I think this is the first drama that I truly cared or even noticed the second lead characters. Usually, I only cared about the leading characters.

@luvs ABSOLUTELY. Jae Shin should have been in the scene with the rest of the family in the living room. that lone scene for her was heartbreaking but the family scene would have been warm and comforting.
alas, so many scenes i wished were played out in the finale. ah heck it, i'm gonna piece together a fantasy episode 20 in my head.

Withdrawal syndrome . . . big time! Should I stop watching Korean dramas?!? :)
What a huge void left by TK2H on my Weds/Thurs sched. Quick! I have to get over it and find a new addiction. Hmmm, on 2nd thought, maybe just a few weeks more?!? :P
I'm so hoping I see more of Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung Gi in the future (together).

Correct me if I'm wrong. I think the conversation wasn't like that. Jiwon was worried about his career, and asked Seung Gi if there's something he worried about. Seung Gi answered something like, "You know I'm going to do/working on a drama (Brilliant Legacy), so.." Jiwon cut him off because he doesn't need to worry. Meaning, he'll do well, so no need to worry.

Even when one complete episode ended, I couldn't wait to watch the next, curious to know what the next episode would bring. There were days where I would watch 2 complete episodes back to back.

loved all of your comments as usual. whew, its been a tiring day for me but i have just got to say my proper farewell for this drama that we'll probably never ever see again in kdramas.
i don't know about you guys but i can't wait to see the next project of the writers for this drama.... they're groundbreaking in kdramas. i'm seriously a fan now.
reading GF's recaps, i can tell how much love was invested in this drama only to be a tweeny bit disappointed in the end. i feel the same way too.
so many shoulda woulda coulda but all is well that ends well.... i suppose. only, i couldn't get enough of it yet.
i will always be a heartie and like jae shin ... life must go on. LOL. so many dramas by the way coming that looks interesting but i suspect never quite the treasure and in vein with what tk2h has.
i also feel that in years to come this drama would be like one of those movies that never was successful but have such a strong cult following which makes it more endearing i think.
i still hold up hope that they could at least have extended to one episode regardless of the ratings. imagine if they had done that wouldn't that be a first in kdrama?? now, that would get attention but it's not really what i'm after. so many questions still on club M... oh, well.
i'm pretty sure i would have gotten the emotional beat that i was looking for. LOL. sheesh, these writers are unforgiving. i'm just hoping its in the directors cut because i still do plan to buy the DVD.
On the other hand, i love that wedding..... simple and what it should have been.... but wait, no queen mother and jae shin. oh, well part 2.
then our little prince..... so cute!!! the kid actually looks like a younger version of the young jae ha w/c i found so adorable. could it be that he really is the younger brother? lol.
then of course, father kim :), queen mother, then the WOC, most of all jae shin :(
overall it was sweet and poignant but still .......
regardless, i Love this show !!! see you guys in the next dramas :)

I really love TK2H and everything about it nevertheless I'm still little bit confused with the logic period in the show. Jae Ha-Hang Ah get married on 24 May......the king died somewhere on March. And in between we have a lot moments which consume times. Jae Kang's mourning period, Jae Ha sent Hang Ah away to the North, Hang Ah's 1 month miscarriage, WOC, HA and QM's kidnapping, ESK died and mourning period, etc.
Silly me to think too much about this for it's only a drama while nothing is perfect to begin with. But I cant help myself . Hehehe....
I hope any Hearties would like to provide some insights to my ignorance.
Thank you in advance ^0^

LOL, you spotted on the flaws hehe..
Yes, the time (or should I say DATE) is the inconsistence in this drama, kkk~ everything is like you spot on,
But I should add one more, the time when Secretary Eun write his report of King's death..he mention the date there, I forgot when, but I remember it does not match with Bon Bon's flight record.
My suggestion, let's take this as 1 year journey, to match all the date? *big grin*

Hahaha......with all the flaws TK2H is actually still number one Kdrama for me, anyhow.
Yet, since episode 1 they showed us the exact date on their documents, for instances when Jae Ha was discharged from his MS, Sec. Eun wrote the date he met Daniel Craig, and last we see the D-day of Morning Calm Operation.
So, I'm questioning the consistency of the writer to put the span time in the right order :D

The wedding need not have been in the same year that JK died. They had to mourn for him and later for SK as well, and WOC took place in later part of that year. We just don't know how much time has lapsed since SK's death, but i think it would have been sometime, cos the dating scene showed that JH and HA were wearing lighter colours - JH chose red tie and HA was wearing pink pants. Also when Dong Ha gave JS the vault with SK's video, he said that he was sorry for not giving it to her earlier. Moreover, since BG is such a powerful man, his trial must have taken some time to process.

Thank u so much for all of your beautiful recaps and insightful comments GF:). My K2H watching experience wouldn't have been complete without it.I'm truly grateful<3
I'm too exhausted(emotionally) to write about the finale, besides you've already said most of the things I wanted to say,or felt but wasn't able to put into words and a 100 times better,at that:). I just want to point out that:
-I think the writers have improved A LOT since their last drama.Sure, they still need to work hard on their weaknesses, like action-thriller aspect of storytelling and most importantly their ending(emphasis on the ENDING),but overall they did an amazing job and I for one was surprised at the quality of the writing for most part.I only wish them the best of luck and will be waiting for their next project(although, this time I'll be wary of ending and I WILL lower my expectations a bit;p)
-Despite whatever I felt about the (very rushed)ending,I think this drama has set a new bar for those dramas that wish to convey some massage and meaning to their audience(I am NOT talking about fluff dramas of course ,which can be enjoyable to watch but that's all). There were a lot of courage and forwardness in the writing that made it feel fresh AND exiting.I hope other drama writers take note:D
-I am very happy for the cast, especially our 4 leads who have risen above all expectations and showed such great potential for further improvement and success in their acting careers that I expect some major changes happen in their professional lives from now on.(well HJW was pretty amazing before,so it's more about the other 3,Though I think it'll have positive effects on her profile as well)
-Discussions in comment section were top quality and definitely enhanced the understanding and enjoyment of this drama,so thank u everyone who shared your views and analyses and heart<3.I hope I'll "see" u again, while watching an even better drama and talk some more;)till then <3<3

May I use the lines from Bellefire 's song to express what I am feeling right now after TK2H..
**super emo mode***
I know that I should get on with my life
But my Wen&Thu nights without you could never be right
And as long as the stars shine down
From the heavens
Long as the rivers run to the sea
I'll never get over you getting over me
I try to smile so the hurt won't show
Tell everybody I was glad to see you go
But the tears just won't go away
Loneliness found me, looks like it's here to stay
I know that I ought to find someone new
But all I find is myself always thinking of you
No matter what I do
Each night's a lifetime to live through
I can't go on like this
I need your touch
You're the only one I'll ever love
Goodbye 'The King 2 Hearts
Goodbye Ah-Ha couple
Goodbye ESK-JS
**************
But I will never say goodbye to my unnie Ha ji won and A big hello to my new inspiration Lee Seung Gi, from now on i'll follow you.. :)

If TK2H wasn’t this kind of drama,
- JH actually loved HA from the first sight, but he denied that until the last minute, and covered his feeling with his bad mouth.
- SK loved HA, so he acted as the best oppa ever.
- JS loved SK, but SK just saw her as a princess that must be protected. So JS hated HA to death.
- The next morning after the sleeping together session, both the naked HA and JH woke up in disbelief checking their lower part underneath the blanket and ‘Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh’
- HA and JH had a contract marriage/engagement because of the ‘accident’.
- The queen mother opposed HA and JH relationship until the end because it’s NK and SK.
- JS and queen mother did all evil to get rid of HA.
- HA was too innocent and just accepted all the unfair treatment from the royal family.
- No BG in this scenario. Why you need him if we have evil in-laws.
- Instead of BG, we had JH’s first love that always disturbed our OTP.
- JS got amnesia, but after she banged her head trying to walk, she regained her memory.
- When HA was treated in China after the prison scenes in ep 18, the first person she saw after she opened her eyes was JH instead of her father.
Feel free to add hearties.^^

@OSI
LOL,
In order to complete your script for a very familiar , stereotypical kdrama romantic love story --- add the following scenarios to your "wonderful" script :
----- debt collectors becasue Hang Ah dad owed some money when his wife dies and they are after HA for payment, since Hang Ah's dad has since retired and receiving no retirement,
--drunken piggy back ride - HA got drunk because of stress over this,
---- someone - SK? is dying of some terminal disease
----and SK is a secret half -brother to JS
because long time ago, the Queen was Sec Eun Tae's first love.
---i don't know where these scenes fit in the story , but you have put it there somewhere .
OSI - I am laughing so hard right now.

@OSI,
something else to add...
--Because the evil Queen mother expelled HA from the palace, Hang Ah has to support herself by delivering milk every morning and working as a persona assistant to JS- of course without Jae Ha's knowledge.
---to make it a love triangle SK will be helping Hang Ah deliver the milk.
--- one day Jae Ha coming home from his exercise saw HA and SK together -- and all hell breaks loose.
=== i think is enough to make a 20 episode drama.
--- just copy the 'romantic moments of Jae Ha and HA from the original script of K2H. and fill in the blanks with numerous flashbacks and gazing into empty space....

OSI,
this is getting better and better LOL
--- we are missing WOC and Bonbon
---should WOC be the gangsters cum debt colectors instead?
--Bon bon sans gothic make-ups of course, would be Jae Ha's girlfriend from abroad , she'll appear in episode just before Jae Ha gets engaged -(JH would have studied abroad for sure), and of course she will have wicked plans for Hang Ah as well.
---let us put Dong Ha as Sec Eun Tae's minion.

OSI,
in order to pay for filming and production, we will use products placement everywhere in bold letters!
Let us hire Lee Seung Gi and Ha Ji won as the main cast and of course we have to resurrect Shi Kyung, under no circumstances should we kill SK in the story.
How do title this drama?
" The K2H - Korean version" - this will garner 50% TV ratings in Korea for sure. it will suck internationally but who cares - it will be a shoo-in come awards time.
besides it has LSG and HJW in it....
or "TK2H Alternate" ???

@ luvs
OMG, you are too funny.
Keep going luvs. If we can make it 100 episodes, why not? I approve all your ideas. Choose any title you want. I've already got many sponsors. So don't worry about money. I want to add some ideas:
- HA delivers milk in the morning, but it's still not enough to pay their debt, so she works in the gas station in the evening.
- Because she's too exhausted, you know the sign? fresh blood from her nose.
- SK keeps seeing her from a afar, so when she's fainted, he directly brings her to the hospital.
-In the hospital, in her sleeping, she calls JH's name, "lee jae ha dongji...lee jae ha dong ji..."
- SK the sweetest guy on earth can't help but call JH.
- JH runs to the hospital, instead of drives his car or takes a taxi.
-And the doctors say that HA has cancer.
What do you think?
luvs
May 26, 2012 at 9:40 AM
Ohhhh
--I think we should put Dong Ha in a love triangle with Jae Shin - Dong Ha is in love with JS secretly?
well some folks here are against the LSG HJW casting.
and LSG said that he wants to do new things - so let us hold an open recruitment - ala X-factor style.
and let's open it up so we get international participation- its open to everybody.
Casting audition for TK2H-kdrama stereotyped
1) Jae Ha2 leading man
2) Hang Ah2 - leading woman
3) SK2
4) JS2
5) Queen mama
6) Sec Eun Three
7) Dong Ha
8) Song Shake
9) Young Bee
10) Hang Ah2's daddy-o
11) WOC team B
and thousands of extras....

My favorite comment (195). Literally Laughed Out Loud! Many of the scenes mentioned remind of Boys Over Flowers (lol). After reading ep.19 recap and comments I was afraid to watch the last 2 episodes...but seeing many hearties had calmed down after our hero's death and some assurance of a satisfying end gave me the courage to watch...
and this is my vow :"I'm going to miss you every Wednesday and Thursday...
Like a stalker, I'm going to re-watch you and read everything about you...
I'm going to buy your OST and DVD...
I'll never forget you.
I will never regret shedding buckets of tears.
I will always be grateful for making me feel like the world's happiest queen.
I will love you alone until the day I die.
Can you handle that? TK2H

Anyone can be one of the writers, luvs. We can have 10 writers, if posiible. We have many sponsors, remember? As long as they can provides as many cliches as possible. The more cliches the better.
BTW, how's the audition? How many applicants have you been auditioned so far? You have to consider looks first. Acting? No, no. It's okay if they can't act as long as they have looks. Acting is number 99 in my book. ^^

guys you make me got a stomach cramp early in the morning.
so bloody genius.^^
-HA and JH was actually childhood friends, they were in love, but HA had to be out of the country because JH's dad gave a false testimony that HA's father is a country traitor so he then was isolated and thrown to NK.
-HA's father died suffering from a disease and shame. Leaving young HA who promised his dad to take a revenge.
-NK knowing HA's hatred, recruits her to be one of the assassin to kill the future king of South K.
-20 years later they meet, no longer remembering their childhood love. Only revenge persists in HA's head. She must dethrone JH as the King. and not to forget, making his life and his entire family's life miserable.
-HA meets SK, SK falls ini love with her, and HA uses him to get close to JH.
-As we all can guess, they get close. the hatred changes into something you call 'LOVE'.
-HA tries to resists by remembering all the hard life and the shame she and her father had to bear, but it doesn't work. Love crushes it all.
-NK heard about HA's betrayal and sends an assassin to kil HA.
-The assassin rides a car, trying to hit her to make it like an accident, but SK is there. He runs towards HA, he pushes her to the safe side, in return the car hits him. He was put into comma.
-HA feels terribly sorry for him, knowing that he likes her, so she feels responsible of him and left JH to take care of SK.
-JH can do nothing only watching from a far.
-HA's still in love with JH therefore sometimes she comes in hiding only to see how JH is doing. [WTH the guards are doing?]
Oh, hang on, I haven't put any scene involving JS. okay here we are.
-JS's actually in love with SK since she saw him a lot around her brother. but JS is a shy girl. she can't confess, nor talk to SK, not even once.
-Secretly she visits SK, holds his hand. truly praying that he will wake up one day.
-she has magic, likely, because with no explainable reason, SK wakes up only to see her holding his hand.
It moves him.
-She realizes that he wakes up. she stutters, but couldn't explain a thing, so she just flees leaving the door half open.
-SK attentively looking at the-half-opened-door, and turn to look at his hand that JS was holding, with a deep look.
-Sk tries to wake up from the bed [come on, you were in a half dead state before, right?], but he couldn't, his lower body get paralyzed. He looks at it in disbelief and screams.
Oh, gosh... I'm dead tired writing this.. LOL

I have watched Episode 20 for 3 times already with the English subs...gosh... the phone conversation between JH and HA at the start made me cry buckets. I felt like watching a classic war separation scene...the likes of Gone With the Wind. It was very heart wrenching and they acted so well. This episode gave such a beautiful ending that is very fitting for the storyline. We can never guess this kind of ending. The marriage, yes for sure..but how it was placed and synergized and the means to achieve this end -- to create the best outcome... it was just amazing !

I beg to disagree to those people who thought it wasn't necessary for the writers to put up ShiKyung's tragic death.
I think the character of Shi Kyung had already serve his purpost, that is the message the writers have been trying to tell us. He was able to encourage both Jae Shin and Jae Ha to stand up on their feet and deal with both internal and external conflicts (at least in BongGu's case the villain got caught, but was freed eventually). With such character of valor and loyalty till the end, Shi Kyung represents what a solider should be in real life. When in times of distress and danger to a royal family, as a guard you put your life on the line. There shall be no room for selfishness (as he displayed when he volunteered himself as a bait for Bong Gu's capture). He embodies an exemplary trait of a true soldier, proud of his king yet humbled before him.
I think the reason why the writers decided to kill him, aside from drawing intense emotions *sobs, is to draw us a hint of reality. Many presidents, leaders' personal bodyguards have served families for years, building deep friendship not just with their bodyguard but also with his/her family as well. It's the same way it's hard for them to lose their bodyguards, Jae Ha also realized it that somehow it was because of him that got him killed. But no. It was an act of service that every bodyguard, soldier knows that they need to put their lives on the line if the situation calls to. Though the disadvantages of being a soldier outweighs the advantages of it, it's still their passion that drives them to live that way. And I commend the writers for a well-thought character that is in Shi Kyung, and give a goodbye salute to him and to all soldiers in IRL who died protecting and serving their country.

I was just reminded of what SK told JS when she asked him to wish upon a star. He wished for world peace, and JS laughed at him. But remember what he said i anger to her? What is wrong is asking for world peace? As a singer she wants her album to do well As a soldier he wants peace. She laughs at him and looks down at him, but without soldiers to protect the country, can she move around so freely?
So I feel that SK's death and his commitment to duty, king and country is words being put into action.
"With such character of valor and loyalty till the end, Shi Kyung represents what a soldier should be in real life. When in times of distress and danger to a royal family, as a guard you put your life on the line. There shall be no room for selfishness (as he displayed when he volunteered himself as a bait for Bong Gu’s capture).
