FINAL EPISODE RECAP
Hang-ah gets dragged to the border by Dad, kicking and screaming that she can’t be separated from Jae-ha. Dad spins around on his heels and asks, “And it’s okay to be separated from me?”
Oh, Dad. Now you’re making me feel bad. He says that it took 35 years to see family members after the first war—does she think they won’t end up that way? He says he can wait decades for her if he has to, but his body won’t hold out that long.
Hang-ah starts to cry, as Dad tells her that even if they meet again, it’ll be at his grave. Okay, that’s some hardcore parent guilt right there. What is she supposed to do when you say stuff like that?
He leaves the choice to her – if she really wants to stay, she can. He tells her that South Korea has turned their backs and declared war, and Jae-ha will prove to be no different.
Jae-ha meets the prime minister to ask who the hell approved DEFCON 3. Uh, well if it wasn’t you, I’m gonna say it’s the other guy in the room with the power to do so. The prime minister admits caving to U.S. pressure.
Jae-ha tries calling Hang-ah over and over, growing more panicked by the second. She finally answers, against Dad’s wishes. They check on each other and suss out the situation—Jae-ha needs time to talk to both the U.S. and North Korea to stop this from happening.
The trouble is, North Korea has cut off all lines of communication. Hang-ah turns to her father to ask if he did this, and he reminds her that this is WAR—of course they cut off communication (though it was his superiors, not him personally).
He tells her to come back, but she hesitates, as more tears start to fall. Oh no. “I’ll go to the North. If this is the situation, then North and South have completely split apart. And the only thing that remains is war.”
Jae-ha says that the South always has their end of the line open. It’s the North that cut off their end. Hang-ah knows, and that’s why she’s going: “I’ll open the line.” Oh, wow, what a great mission for the heroine. She says that she’ll convey the king’s position and stop this war.
He protests – there’s no way for the two of them to communicate once she crosses that border. There’s no way to know how bad things will get, so how can he let her go? Hang-ah: “Isn’t your heart my heart?”
She asks if the change in situation will change their hearts. They know the answer, but he still puts up a fight, asking if she’s really going to go, knowing full well that war might break out?
Hang-ah: “I want to see Father for a long long time. And I want to see you for a long time. That’s why I’m going. So that I can see you.” He starts to cry. “Hang-ah-ya…”
Hang-ah: “You’ll stop the war, right? I’ll do the same. If you just remember that, then we’ll see each other again. I love you.” And then she hangs up, before he can even say it back. He just looks down at his phone in tear-filled shock.
They both cry for a moment, and then Hang-ah braces herself. She spins around on her heels as the music turns along with her. She marches through to the North, a woman on a mission.
Jae-ha lingers for another moment in the hallway, and then he wipes his tears and mirrors her walk. I love the double badass turn.
Bong-gu gets the confirmation that the U.S. has approved an attack on North Korea, and calls Jae-ha to gloat about it. I love that till the end, Jae-ha’s like, “Who is this?” which drives Bong-gu crazy.
He passes along the military operation as proof and says that it’s really Jae-ha’s fault for attacking via ICC. That day on the cliff he gave Jae-ha the choice between himself or his people—”You chose yourself. You killed them.”
Jae-ha: “No. YOU did.” Aw, yeah. He says that all he’s done is try to bring Bong-gu to justice, according to the law. Bong-gu laughs that in the end the Koreas will be at war and he’ll walk away.
Jae-ha: “No. I’m going to stop this war. And you’re going to be put on trial.” For all of Bong-gu’s blustering, it’s really Jae-ha who has the upper hand when it comes to poker faces, because he believes in what he’s saying. The report is confirmed to be legit, and the situation escalates as Jae-ha signs off on DEFCON 2 and the country prepares for war.
Hang-ah meets with the prime minister who praises her for her loyalty to country, and then proceeds to ask about what she’s learned in her time in the South, like where are the secret bunkers they can attack.
But when she tells him that they need to reopen the lines of communication with the South, he argues that the king is preparing for war and accuses her of caving to her womanly weaknesses. Oh, because that’s evil, right? Ass.
She narrows her eyes but rises above it and asks the very logical question of why on earth she’d come back home then, if she were just madly in love and ready to forsake her country for a man. I would’ve added a knee kick but clearly you are more civilized than I. But he tells her it’s too late for communication, because both sides have their missiles pointed right at each other. Gah, the art-imitating-life of this situation is so unnerving.
Jae-ha prepares for a public address, and Secretary Eun reminds him that he needs to appear strong before the people. He starts to write his speech, calling out the U.S. for their attack plan, and urging the North to show that they are willing to discuss peace.
He starts to write, “But if North Korea attacks Seoul… then South Korea will by any means necessary…” He flashes back to his moments with Hang-ah, on their 60km trek, and when she held him in her lap. He finishes his sentence with a pang in his heart, “…repay the whole of North Korea in kind.”
Meanwhile Hang-ah’s last conversation with the prime minister has put her father in a sticky position, and he goes entirely in the other direction and presents her with plane tickets for them to flee the country.
He says that war is inevitable now, and even here in the North, they’ll be seen as South-friendly and therefore a liability. He doesn’t trust Jae-ha either, since he heard the speech above.
Hang-ah defends Jae-ha’s need to make an official statement as such, but Dad asks how he could, knowing that Hang-ah is here. He says that a preemptive strike isn’t that uncalled for in this situation. Her eyes widen, “A preemptive strike? Are we going to attack first?” He says nothing has been decided yet. Oh crap.
Jae-ha sits down with his general and asks what kind of casualties have been projected if war does break out. In day one: 200,000 soldiers, 1.5 million civilians. In week one: 1 million soldiers, 5 million civilians. And the cost of course in the tens of billions. He looks up in horror, and the general says these are all numbers projected in 1994, so they can probably double them.
Jae-ha sits, literally the weight of the world on his shoulders. He thinks back to hyung’s dreams of peace and reunification, Shi-kyung’s dying pleas to never give up, and Bong-gu’s words that if a single life were to be lost, it would be on his hands.
Hang-ah in turn thinks back to Jae-ha’s promise during the WOC: “Trust me, and I’ll trust you,” and Jae-kang’s question in presiding over their engagement about joining their strength in a time of war.
Her doorbell rings with a delivery. A mysterious man drops off a package and she asks if he’s from China since his accent is different, but he disappears without a word. She opens it up to find Jae-ha’s I’m-sorry-thank-you-I-love-you skincare set for her (aw) with an envelope buried underneath: a copy of the U.S. military strike against Pyongyang.
This is exactly the leverage she needs. She takes what she knows to the prime minister, but only offers to give him the date of the attack if he’ll reopen the line to Seoul. Awesome. Jae-ha is headed to the border to try and speak to someone from the North, and she asks to be the one to go.
He scoffs at her gall to negotiate with him, so she gets up and breezes that she heard about the preemptive attack, “But it’ll be too late.” He offers to let her go as a representative to start the talks, but only if she gives him the date. She says she’ll give it after she comes back from the meeting, since she’s not about to throw away her bargaining chip. Ha.
The prime minister says he needs something too then, and presents her with the only copy in existence certifying her engagement to Jae-ha (that seems like a big leap, but it’s the gesture that’s important). He tells her to rip it up: “What do you need an engagement for when you are going to meet your enemy?”
She doesn’t hesitate and rips it to shreds. Now he has proof of her loyalty and she has access to meet with Jae-ha. The prime minister adds a caveat, to make sure she gives him the information promised—he’ll be holding her father as hostage until she hands over the brief. Damnit.
Jae-ha arrives first and waits for the Northern diplomat to arrive. Hang-ah calls her father to check in, and he assures her that the prime minister won’t do anything hasty (he’s totally lying through his teeth), and the two men watch the meeting via live feed.
Hang-ah walks into the room and Jae-ha lights up to see her. He approaches her warmly, but she remains distant and formal. She puts out her hand for a shake and he sees the earpiece in her ear.
He takes her hand but he sinks when she just shakes it and goes to her seat. She asks everything she’s supposed to—is he really preparing to join hands with the U.S. and go to war?
Jae-ha sits through her barrage of questions silently, which is doubly infuriating for Hang-ah who’s desperate not to lose this chance to show the prime minister Jae-ha’s true intentions.
He finally sits back and asks casually if she knows that they’ll be attacked on May 24. The prime minister freaks out, and Hang-ah’s father hands over the brief to prove it. It’s less than a week out.
Meanwhile Hang-ah flips out that he gave away her bargaining chip. But Jae-ha is still smiling, calm as you please. “What’re you doing May 24? Going to war?” Hang-ah finally loses the cool exterior, “Comrade Jae-ha!”
He just keeps going, “I’m getting married. To you.” Hahaha. Okay, that’s crazy but kind of brilliant. He’s going to set the date of the attack as his wedding day?
The prime minister barks into Hang-ah’s ear for her to get out, and Jae-ha sees her flinch. He looks up at the camera and orders him to say it directly, and stop using Hang-ah as his shield. Love it.
It works, and the prime minister calls to speak to him directly. He shouts that they weren’t behind the terrorist attack, and Jae-ha shouts back that threatening Seoul is the definition of terror.
He calms down. “You die. And then we die. The U.S. hits you, you hit us, and then if China gets involved… do you think that even one person will be left standing on this land?”
The prime minister scoffs at his solution—if they get married, does he think the U.S. will just pat their heads and wish them well? But Jae-ha makes it clear that he’s not talking about sneaking off and eloping, but standing with both countries behind them.
A wedding is cause for congratulations and if North and South officially present a united front, the whole world will rush to congratulate them. In that situation, on that day, can anyone launch a missile at them?
“I’m not doing this so that South Korea can live alone. I’m saying let’s get married and live together.”
The prime minister says he’ll put it under advisement and orders Hang-ah to leave the room. But Jae-ha presses the Big Red Button and suddenly soldiers from both sides charge into the room, guns drawn.
Oh noes, Young-bae and Dong-ha, guns pointed at each other? I don’t like this one bit!
Jae-ha barks into the phone that he has five minutes to make a decision, “Or shoot me.” He figures that even if they say no, he’ll be dead anyway, so why not just die here? He hangs up.
Then they have to sit like that in the room for the five longest minutes ever. Jae-ha: “Young-bae-ya, you’re a sniper, right? Aim so that I go in one blow.” He points to the center of his forehead. Young-bae’s eyes dart back and forth, Dong-ha tenses up, ready to shoot him if he shoots. Hang-ah looks back and forth between them all.
The prime minister paces back and forth. Hang-ah’s father pleads with him to decide. Time’s up, and Jae-ha calls. Has he made a decision?
There’s no answer on the other end. Jae-ha takes the silence as a no. “Then, war?” He orders Young-bae to shoot. If their leader wants war, shooting the king is the way to start one.
Young-bae hesitates. Dong-ha, “Just try and shoot.” And then Young-bae adorably trembles and stutters, “I-I-I j-j-just can’t …”
But then Hang-ah stands up and grabs Young-bae’s gun out of his hand. She walks over and sticks it in Jae-ha’s face. Dong-ha raises his gun to her head. OH SHIT.
She says (at the prime minister), “Do I shoot? Why, do you think that because it’s the person I love, I can’t shoot? I can kill this comrade. And die with him.”
Well, now we know why Romeo and Juliet weren’t given guns. Because then shit like this happens. Everyone just put down the deadly objects!
Jae-ha looks up at her, his eyes full of love, and her eyes soften, “I’ll follow right behind you.” She cocks her gun. Dong-ha raises his to her temple…
And then in the last possible second before my heart bursts, the prime minister tells her to put down her weapon. Everyone starts breathing again, including me.
He asks Jae-ha if this means he’s really going to help them, and Jae-ha says yes. Hang-ah finally lowers her gun and Dong-ha does too. Jae-ha takes the gun from her hand and hugs her tight.
Bong-gu watches the North Korean news report in shock and demands that the U.S. attack anyway—why not the wedding? The contact refuses because somehow the story determined he should suddenly stop stupidly listening to the crazy man. Whatever, fake America. You are so weird.
Jae-ha gets ready to cross the border on his wedding day, and the U.N. tries to stop him. But the Korean troops help get him through, saluting their congratulations. Aw, that’s cute.
And I frickin’ LOVE that they’re getting married in the DMZ. Hang-ah smiles as she gets ready when she sees two officers North and South laughing together at their post. Dad says it’s too bad their wedding has less fanfare than their engagement and fusses over her hanbok, wishing her mother were here to see her.
She hugs him and says she’s sorry for being such a troublesome daughter, but he says as long as she’s happy, that’s all that matters to him. And then he breaks away from her so that she won’t see him cry. N’aaaaaw, Daaaaad. Okay, I forgive you for the guilt trip earlier.
Everything goes as planned and the U.S. backs off their military strike and offers up their congrats, and then the wedding begins. They each walk down the aisle from either side of the 38th parallel to meet in the middle.
Jae-ha holds out his hand. Hang-ah puts her hand in his, and then he crosses to the North. They face southward and bow.
And then together they cross to the South, and bow facing north. It’s simple, and lovely, and says everything.
And then he picks her up and twirls her around as they beam.
Then sometime later Bong-gu faces trial before the ICC. And the reason you couldn’t have kept him locked up till this point and therefore not make Shi-kyung’s sacrifice moot IS? BAH.
He gets sentenced to life in prison. That’s it? What about the tank of carnivorous snakes?
Jae-ha pays him a visit in jail, and Bong-gu muses that he must’ve been dying to see him like this. Bong-gu: “I won. You went to the brink of war. You were scared.” He chuckles that they’ve experienced trauma now.
“When you hear fireworks, you’ll jump in fear. When you hear sirens, your heart will race. Only Korea is like that. A country that has experienced war. That’s why you will become more anxious. You’ll be scared of what you encountered, and only amass more weapons.”
Jae-ha: “We stopped it. I did. We did. Now we have the confidence that we can stop it. They say that the scariest thing in the world is war. But we stopped it, so what can’t we do? Thank you… for making us powerful.”
He turns to walk away. Bong-gu screams after him that locking him up will do nothing to stop Club M from existing, and attacking. Jae-ha stops for a moment, but doesn’t turn back. He squares his shoulders and keeps walking ahead.
Four years later.
Dong-ha (wearing a much more decorated uniform) comes to find Jae-ha, and he comes to greet North Korean soldiers for the new WOC team. Behind him are Dong-ha, Young-bae, and (YAY!) Kang-seok. Where have you BEEN?
They’re old-timers now, the guys who train the newbies. Jae-ha asks about the female soldier for this team and Kang-seok says she’ll be from the South this time. Jae-ha leans in close to whisper at Young-bae that southern girls are really pretty, and Dong-ha sighs that it’s already too late—Young-bae took one look at her and he’s smitten so bad he can’t even train her properly. HA.
Once it’s just the four of them, Jae-ha greets them happily saying it’s been a really long time since they’ve all been together, and asks them out for a drink. Young-bae adds dejectedly that it’s not really all of them. Aw. Young-bae.
Jae-ha looks down and Kang-seok reminds Young-bae that they already poured a bunch of alcohol over Shi-kyung’s grave—he’s probably already drunk enough. Jae-ha muses that he’d probably have collapsed. It at least warms my heart that they still talk about him.
Jae-shin sits on her wall at the top of the city, and makes a phone call to confirm a concert and says that she can make it there on her own. We pan out to see that she’s sitting up there with her parrot, speaking to it as if it’s Shi-kyung.
She says that she’s supposed to go on a blind date tomorrow. Should she go? She looks over at parrot, only this time it’s Shi-kyung that appears. *Mmmrrmph* He opens his mouth to talk and just that alone makes me cry. Gaaaaah, I don’t know if I can do this.
He tells her to go. She asks if he’s mad and he says no. Jae-shin: “I can’t say that I’ll die old and alone only thinking of you.” He laughs and tells her she shouldn’t do that.
“But you’ll always be in a part of my heart. Like a shadow.” They smile at each other. And then when she looks back at him, he’s gone. It breaks my heart all over again.
We pan over to see that she’s actually at the foot of the wall, in her wheelchair, Birdie at her side.
Hang-ah’s father coos over pictures of his grandson prince, and squeals when he gets to talk to him over video.
Later, Jae-ha rushes to meet Hang-ah for a ribbon-cutting ceremony (for the first joint bank serving both countries) and little princey runs up to daddy for a hug. All the reporters swoon, and then princey calls out for Mom, but uses the North Korean dialect version (omani), which causes a giant ruckus in the media.
The queen mother tells them it’ll blow over, and Jae-ha pretends to be stern, but once she leaves the room, he dies laughing. They’re so cute.
But it turns into an issue (with chatter from Club M) and Jae-ha says he’ll make a statement. Secretary Eun thinks it might be best to leave it alone, but Jae-ha argues that all of his people matter, and he’ll win them over one by one, until they accept Hang-ah.
He gets to work, and Secretary Eun smiles proudly.
Jae-ha and Hang-ah stand side by side, ready to go in for a press conference. He tells her the situation is getting more serious. She chides that saying omani twice will lead to war. They chuckle, ’cause, well, been there done that.
Jae-ha: “We’ve already stopped a war. Hang-ah: “That’s true. Just as long as we don’t give up. The doors open. Cameras flash.
Jae-ha: “You ready?” She says yes. He takes her hand. “I love you.” They smile at each other and with a “Let’s go,” they walk forward in step.
COMMENTS
There were a lot of things I wanted for the finale that I didn’t get, and a lot of things that still felt satisfying anyway. The main trip-up for me is the Shi-kyung/Bong-gu war which hit its high at the end of Episode 18 and then fizzled out as soon as Shi-kyung died. It’s not really his death so much as the consequence of it that went so wrong. Had he died to put Bong-gu away, had Bong-gu remained in custody during the almost-war (which by the way was completely feasible and would in no way change the way the final chapter went down), and then be prosecuted, it would have all made sense and I wouldn’t have to tear my hair out. Because how do you even explain that he was brought to trial in the end if the first time took that much effort to get him in cuffs? HUH?
Mishandling that actually took a lot of the villain’s steam away, which I have to assume was inadvertent (because who would do that on purpose?). Sure, Bong-gu was the evil one who set the war into motion, but once that happened, the immediate threat became the world powers and I forgot that Bong-gu even existed. Despite the simplicity of containing an almost-war to four characters, I did like the dramatic climax for the couple, in putting their lives on the line. It’s you-have-to-get-through-us-to-get-to-war, and the culmination of everything they’ve built, from becoming comrades, to finding love, to trusting each other, to letting go. That felt both thematically on point and dramatically riveting, even though you don’t really expect a show to go out with a pair of dead lovers and a world war. Hello, hate mail.
What the two-part finale really lacked for me was breathing room on one score—Shi-kyung’s death in Jae-ha’s eyes. Jae-kang’s death, for instance, happened so early on that we had full episodes to mourn his passing and have Jae-ha learn and grow. And yes, Shi-kyung did already make his crucial impact on Jae-ha before he died. But I wanted that emotional beat. Jae-ha would never have become the king he is without Eun Shi-kyung. And though I loved Jae-shin’s moment remembering him, I wanted the same from Jae-ha. It was the biggest way the finale failed to deliver for me. And now I have a giant Eun Shi-kyung-shaped hole in my heart, and the show ended without patching it up properly.
There were a lot of things that this show never got quite right—the overly simplistic Club-M-is-all-powerful mantra, the over-reliance on wooden day players to give exposition, (Seriously, I can barely stand exposition when it’s served by the most talented of actors, and you’re going to give every bit of explanatory dialogue to extras? Foot, meet gun.) the slow progression of Bong-gu who took a really long time to become an interesting or effective villain. The international incidents were colored in the broadest brushstrokes possible, leading to more than a handful of countries whose leaders seemed more like silly dingbats than powerful movers and shakers. It’s not so much that I take offense, but that I would prefer the opposition to always seem bigger and badder (which makes for better drama) only they were more like dumb and dumberer.
But of course, there were many more things that the drama DID get right. It was shot gorgeously (the cinematographer and lighting team deserve like a medal, or a parade), the music swept me up in every moment and made me feel like it was a living, breathing world I was looking in on. And the cast was brilliant. I’ll be honest—I’ve always thought Ha Ji-won was over-hyped, but here she was amazingly tough, vulnerable, and believable, no matter how insane the situation seemed. She grounded everything. Perhaps it makes a great deal of difference to play a character who’s consistent from beginning to end. Lee Seung-gi had less gravitas than her going in, but gained it through his performance, and though his is still not an effortless kind of acting, it was his breakthrough to the other side—past the façade and into raw emotion. He stole the show, hands down (which isn’t really a surprise, since he played the king in The King). Jo Jung-seok played what was probably everyone’s favorite character, but I really think he’s to credit for a lot of that, because so much of who Shi-kyung was came from the physical performance. A great deal of his character’s innocent/earnest nuance could’ve been lost to a wooden actor, or worse, made to seem dumb, which would’ve been a travesty. And everyone else was already good in an established way—the parents, the hyung, and even Lee Yoon-ji, who’s always been fantastic.
When this show was funny, it hit that darkly funny sweet spot where my blackened heart resides. And when it was badass, it made me pump my fist in the air. And then, when it was deeply earnest about a soldier’s faith in his king or the partnership between a man and a woman in the face of insurmountable odds, it actually got through to my gooey earnest center.
You could say this show is about a lot of things, but it’s clear that the romance is the central metaphor – man and woman as two parts of a whole like a war-torn Korea, always at odds, but always kin. And though actual politics is far more complex than a pair of lovers being able to bridge that gap, it’s the idealistic view that they could, in such a world. What grips me most is actually not that larger idea, but the mechanics of what that relationship needs in order to make it to the end – not just love, but friendship, complete trust, and an equal partnership. A hero who saves the girl is swoonworthy, sure. But a hero who confides in his girl and trusts her to save the day is the winner, by a mile.
My favorite part of the show wasn’t actually the romance (though I loved their epic love story, I promise). It was the making of a king. What this show did right was its character development and relationships, and if you look at it from beginning to end, there are actually very few characters who change a great deal. Hang-ah and Shi-kyung are in large part the same (he gains a sense of humor, but starts and ends a hero, and she learns to play a player, but starts and ends a hero). Jae-shin takes a massive dip, but then gets back to her old self (albeit a better version) because of Shi-kyung.
But Jae-ha goes from a worthless thorn in his brother’s side to a ruler who can stop a war. He goes from someone who thinks the monarchy is a sham to a king who believes with all his heart that he is his people and they are the king. And it’s in the shaping of this character where Hang-ah and Shi-kyung are the traditional heroes of the story—they make Jae-ha kingworthy, through their tough love and indefatigable faith. It’s kind of equally admirable and stupid, but that’s why they’re the heroes. In that sense, Jae-ha really IS the people—he’s the most like us, doubting, questioning, pessimistic, jaded. Even till the end he’s the one who doesn’t want to let Shi-kyung go on his mission or let Hang-ah go on hers. Because that’s what a normal person would do. But they don’t let him be weak.
And perhaps that’s the final step he learns in becoming a true leader—to let his soldiers fight for what they believe in, to put the country and the mission before his heart. I still don’t think it justifies killing Shi-kyung (the lesson would’ve been learned without, thank you very much) but to be a true leader, he does have to live with the harsh choices and the deaths of his soldiers on his conscience. It’s the journey in making a king out of a man that hooked me through the heart, and kept me wholly invested no matter what international debacle came and went. And I guess what’s important is that I feel like the payoff for that was there in the end. And it was. Many other things may have fallen by the wayside, but Jae-ha became a king befitting his hyung’s legacy and his most faithful soldier’s trust. And I like that the point isn’t that he defeated one big bad villain (though of course we need his victory over Bong-gu), but that he finds out that he is strong, and forges ahead to fight more battles and more villains with that power.
And that’s why I really, really wanted Jae-ha to walk away from Bong-gu’s jail cell with this one retort: “I am king.”
BOOYAH.

the end…. it really is the end! T_T
i would like to sincerely thank you, GF for all hard work doing up the recap + including your thoughts, for us. i'm not good at expressing my thoughts but reading yours helps me to shape mine :)
I loved Jae Shin’s imaginary conversation with Shi Kyung. She was back to her teasings and he with his usual pure and earnest answers. GAH! It was heart-breaking to watch, even worse than her watching of the VHS tape. When Shi Kyung died, I was in a state of complete numbness. Honestly, I didn’t really cry just tear-ed a little. But in this final episode, when he smiled and uttered those words “I won’t be angry, meet him”, the knife that was stabbed in my heart was finally twisted. It hit me that life had to go on, without him being there as a pillar of support for her. In my opinion, it will be so hard to obtain closure for something that has never even officially begun. That scene was heart-breaking but was a necessary closure for Jae Shin and all of us.
my heart will take time to heal from the passing of dear Eun Shi Kyung. I was and maybe still am angry with the decision to kill him off. But I can’t and won’t say that I have completely disavowed this kdrama. Can I say that TK2H was just like a passionate relationship? I was invested in the drama- heart, mind and soul. I may be badly bruised from the resolution of the drama but I must admit that just like relationships in life, not everything ends in a rosy picture. It brought me lots of highs and lows. But it gave me something to look forward to in the midst of the bleak middle work week. I laughed, smiled and cried alot, more so for episode 19 and 20. The drama didn’t give me the happy ending that I wanted badly and thought it owed me. (i have made peace with the writers, and will now admit that they DO NOT owe me anything). putting aside my want for a happy JS/SK ending, I fully respect their decision to end the drama this way. It managed to break my rusty tear ducts and dead heart; reminding me that I am alive with feelings and emotions which does not happen to me while watching other kdramas. I swear with scout's honour that this is the first time I bawled my guts out when a kdrama character died.
anyways, despite all the disappointments, i still have to admit that TK2H has got me hook line and sinker. i dont care what anyone else says about the NK/SK conflict being the main focus of the drama. Jae Shin & Shi Kyung has been my main reason for my sticking with the show and will always be. what they had with each other was pure and sweet. jae shin had to face many misfortunes but i feel that what shi kyung gave her was something special and can never ever be replaced by anything; his honest-to-the-bone-no-ulterior-motives support and love (even if he didnt explicitly tell her). with that said, i'm sure jae shin will be able to shoulder on with her life knowing how deeply he cared for her and she, him. i love this lovely couple with all my heart and will always remember their sweet story. looking beyond SK’s death, the writers did give me many amazing moments between them and for that the drama remains #1 for me after my long kdrama drought
Lastly, I am glad for this drama because it introduced Jo Jung Suk to me. He truly is talented. Every facial expression change and subtle body movement that seemed so casual was so well-calculated by him. All that completed the scenes he was acting out. But it was always his eyes that got me. i felt everything that he wanted me to feel- awkwardness, anger, sadness, pain, giddy-in-love. AND OH. his dazed and confused eyes when he was gunned down by Bong Gu. *heart clenches* I think I’m gonna catch What’s Up to kick start the healing process. Here’s to hoping he wins an award in MBC 2012 awards AND get a leading role in an awesome drama soon.
Not forgetting the pretty and talented, Lee Yoon Ji too! I've loved her since her time in Pure 19/Hearts of 19. she brought the cute lovable character as she always has BUT knocked my socks off with her raw emotion in every single grieving scene. her chemistry with JJS was so real. even if they don't end up dating in real life, I hope they remain friends. I wish for them to appear together once again in variety show or something (since kdramas don't repeat romantic pairings).
Cheers to The King 2 Hearts! it was one heck of ride *Salutes, wipes tears and snot*

"I was invested in the drama- heart, mind and soul. I may be badly bruised from the resolution of the drama but I must admit that just like relationships in life, not everything ends in a rosy picture." --these are exactly my thoughts. And I'm happy of how it all ended. As girlfriday pointed out, "...the mechanics of what that relationship needs in order to make it to the end – not just love, but friendship, complete trust, and an equal partnership."
Good relationships are founded on trust, I think we gave that to the show. And I'm not disappointed for doing so.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
I'm so sad to see this show go, but it was such a GREAT show that I can't help but be happy on how it ended. I was so worried that it wouldn't be satisfying, but it was just right.
The finale was the high-steaks, fast-paced storyline we've grown to love, and that's what makes it awesome. Yes, the drama had its faults here and there, but the overall story arc was well showcased and I praise everyone involved in TK2H for that.
Thank you TK2H! My Wednesday-Thursday nights will never be the same!

I was hoping the same thing, in that last scene.
"FYI, I'm King, bitsch"
"Whatever, fake America." my favorite line from this recap. I'd like to think I am open minded enough to accept the good ol' USA as a villain in a dramatic piece, but, I want it done well. As an American watching this, I want at least that much respect afforded my country. But... I guess it really isn't any worse than all of our cartoonish Russians or Nazis with British accents. Somehow, I always hope for better though. At least, good actors??
Weird Senator guy (aka weird WOC General guy in disguise)...just, no. No.
I'm still not entirely sure what I think of this ending. I like parts of it, I cried during several scenes (the parrot and Hang ah's dad at the wedding).. I'm just not entirely sure I am satisfied.
Acting though (Aside from the stupid "Americans") was so out of the park. Now I can see why people accusse Ha Ji Won of not giving it all in 'Secret Garden'. I still love her though.
I really love Kim Hang Ah.

Before going off to read, I just have to say, despite some of the minor flaws (actually just the Bong Gu part, he kind of just fell off of my radar and I was too engrossed with the North-South almost war hehe, but I like Jae-Ha's speech to him at the end), I LOVED THIS ENDING! It was really satisfying for me, we got a closure to all the main characters. And it's absolutely touching for me, the way they ended it, hand in hand, and Jae-Ha saying out loud the one thing he said would be impossible for him to say (back in episode 5): I Love You.
There are other parallels with scenes from previous episodes, and so I thought that was really nice too <3
Gosh and I love the Jae-Ha vs. Hang-ah part. I was holding my breath during that scene and I could feel all the emotions from their eyes when Hang-ah pointed the gun at him. Even though I know that they'll come out ok, but I was still so engrossed in it, it's like you can cut a tension with a knife in that scene. Wonderfully portrayed by LSG and HJW!
Oh and love the wedding too! it's simple but really sweet <3 having it at the dmz is a nice touch, gives it that much more meaning ^^

Hands down, The King 2 Hearts is the best drama I’ve ever watched. I am SO IN LOVE with you! Whew! What a ride. This show hit the ground running and never lost its steam until the very end. What an awesome, awesome way to bookend a truly wonderful show! And how I loved that it stayed true to itself, not compromising the integrity of the story for audience approval. It’s truly a masterpiece!
I actually dreaded watching this final episode after what we’ve all been through yesterday with Episode 19 but after watching it, I thought, what a perfect ending! This episode brought necessary closure without pulling any tricks out of the proverbial hat to tie up loose ends. There was a natural flow to the scheme of events. And I dig that the ending is open-ended – Club M still operates, albeit under a different name, Jae Shin is still in a wheelchair, our OTP still has a lot of detractors of their marriage (even after they had a child), etc. etc. It’s truly a satisfying conclusion!
I’m so happy that I got to witness the growth of the kind of love that Jae Ha and Hang Ah had, one that was grounded on solid mutual trust. What an amazing love story! Best OTP in any drama, bar none.
And I’m equally ecstatic that we got a glimpse of Eun Shi-kyung!, still being his adorable stick-in-the-mud self. Oh God! I’m tearing up again. Ahh! The what ifs and could have beens of this unrealized love story! *sniffles* On another note, how cute was it that the
parrot (in hiding) reappeared and became the stand-in for our Shi-kyung? I’m glad that Jae Shin is truly on her way to recovery – physically and emotionally. Time really heals all wounds. I also appreciated that she did not miraculously walk, so thank you again, Show, for keeping it real.
I just had one complaint. Lee Jae Ha, you’ve been quite the fashionista in all the episodes, what with your impeccable suits, cute cardigans, and swoon-worthy royal finery but WTH? What’s that suit you wore during the bank opening ribbon cutting ceremony? And that bow tie just reminded me of Kim Bong-gu. Where you adopting KBG’s fashion choices now that he's in the slammer? Where was the fashion police when you needed one? (Was I the only one who thought that suit was hideous?)
I don’t know what life will be like next week now that TK2H is done – no looking forward to Wednesdays and Thursdays, alternating between impatiently and patiently waiting for subbed episodes and DB recaps, staying up late reading wonderful Hearties’ comments and spazzing like crazy so i can contribute in the lively community that is the TK2H DB fanbase. it just would not be the same. Ah. I love you guys for welcoming me in your midst – your well thought-out and very insightful views and comments made me think outside the box and made me truly appreciate our diversity. I've learned a lot from all of you. And for that I'm forever grateful. I'll never forget the lengthy discussions and good times we had, Hearties! So THANK YOU! I hope we meet again very soon in another spazz-worthy drama recap. Loyalty! *salute*
Girlfriday, as always, YOU ROCK! Thank you for your time and effort in putting out a pair of solid recap week after week after week. Very much appreciated.

While HJW is a seasoned actress, no doubt...we should give credit where it's due!! Seung-gi acted his heart out and then some with nary a misstep on his part!! He gave it his all and his dedication to the character showed on-screen.
Right before Ep 19 aired the crew made a statement that viewers had yet to see some of his best acting skills in the remaining two episodes. It seemed while filming SK's death scene he was inconsolable and cried after the shot was capped...so much so that when he greeted his fans later his voice was hoarse.
There is a reason why the PD and the veteran actors have been singing his praises!! We're still mid-way through the year....but I hope he wins the acting awards!! He deserves no less!

yes, i wholeheartedly agree with you and whoever else that has shared the same sentiments. even if i'm not the biggest fan of Lee Seung Gi as I've previously mentioned before.
I've watched a few episodes of My Girl Friend is a Gumiho and Brilliant Inheritance. he was cute, yes. he has a killer smile with killer dimples to boot, uh-huh. but that was it, you have to admit it that his acting then was lacklustre in those dramas. then, to me, he simply became yet another idol who has tried his hand in acting.
With TK2H, LSG's acting has grown tremendously and was kinda paralleled in the growth of his character Jae Ha too, no? Both were doofy goofy adorable boys but when thrust into serious situations, both made good and manned up!
LSG was thrust together with a cast that was made up of extremely experienced actors/actresses/performing artist but he didn't fall short. Just like how Hang Ah and Shi Kyung has helped push Jae Ha to be the best man/king he can be, the sunbaes have helped push LSG to stretch his acting abilities to a whole new height that even I have to applaud him for.
One of the top LSG scenes that gutted me;
1) his slow transition into grief towards his beloved hyung's death. watching him continuously well up in tears but stubbornly push them back in was extremely hard. that progressive built up of grief was transferred from him to me. i felt so frustrated that i wanted to breakdown myself, in place of Jae Ha's refusal to do so.

The final 2 episodes did not match up to the high levels of the previous 18, but I am still satisfied with the conclusion of this drama.
I was attracted to start this drama because of the premise, of a fictional constitutional monarchy in relation to the North-South divide. The first episode hooked me with the dark comedy execution, which I miss later on though it is understandable that went missing as the plot got much heavier. So I’ll just make little list of what stuck on me to commemorate this drama.
-The Berlin wall and the 38th Parallel DMZ. Both are results of the Cold War. Soviet + East = Allied Nations (US) + West maintained the equilibrium. The weakening of the Soviets was the greatest disruption that allowed for the wall to be torn down. Soviet + China + North = Allied Nations (US) + South. This sets up the narrative.
-Constitutional Monarchy. England’s royals with their wealth, Japanese with their divine rights, Korean version are mannequins.
-North/South divide. The biggest obstacle to Korean reunification is the regime in Pyongyang. It is not possible to have this story without taking posturing as moving towards peace in the alternate universe the writer is building. Then the story seeks to look at the prejudice and discrimination each side have for the other. German reunification did not come overnight, with each side also wary of the other and holding discriminatory views towards each other. Economic and social differences that grew over the years do not disappear overnight. The family ties that exist also slowly disintegrating as the elders pass on.
-In that universe, the central theme is love. Family, romantic, comrades. People.
-And the enemy is set up as a third party, Kim Bong Gu, who symbolized all that can keep this apart and with an interest to have that status quo. Power, money, greed, weapons, politics.
-The 2 main foes are actually very similar, but with a crucial difference. People.
-The battle of wits and guts. The password protected box is such a gem that I am still applauding. High intensity thrills and spills.
-Fantastic cast. Perhaps maybe not the extras and most foreign actors, but can anyone else do better to recruit that in Korea? I can just imagine the headache the casting director went through.
The production values are top notch. Great costumes, sets, camera, locations, etc. Editing has been fairly good and consistent. Directing wonderful. Writing uneven, though brilliant at many times.
This is a difficult and high budget endeavor, and I enjoyed watching it. Though not perfect, it tried something different from any kdramas I have watched.
Thank you for your recaps that enriched the viewing experience. And all Hearties with your fantastic commenting and fervor.

so true. it's not very often that we come across a drama with a premise that's as gutsy as TK2H. Although the NK-SK story line was not entirely new, the execution of the drama was done in such a way that there was never a time (I think) that the drama felt congested due to the many factors that's coming into play. (I, on the other hand, always felt congested due to the gross sobbing and emotional upheavals this drama put me through). The sequencing of the events was cohesive and logical. And I love that there were many surprises along the way, which is practically rare in the predictable world of kdrama.
on another note, i'd like to salute you as well for being the level-headed commenter that you are (you know, not prone to ranting and raving like a lunatic -> like me. teehee) *clicks heels and salute*

You sum up all the things I love (that I could not list myself) about this drama.
The palace setting is also the same setting that My Princess used. My Princess did not showcase the setting the way TK2H did. It's like a caricature to me. One of the reason why I disliked that drama.

You listed pretty much all the reasons I first wanted to watch this drama.
At first, I was leery that they would camp it up with such a fantastical scenario yet the similarities to reality as you pointed out made compelling material. I could sense the crack coming ...
I give the writers massive kudos for tackling so many issues with moxie. While some were handled clumsily or awkwardly, at leas they went there. Which has never happened in a kdrama .. well, at least that I have seen.
Especially when the issue of reunification is so real for Korea, it is incredibly gutsy and you can feel the heart ad soul that the writers and entire production team has invested in it.
How can we not reward them with the same heartfelt sincerity?
There was much to love and admire in this drama despite the few hiccups.
And there is much to love and admire in all the comments that have raised the level of emotional and educational maturity for this humbled viewer.

@topper,
"The biggest obstacle to Korean reunification is the regime in Pyongyang."
That's it. That's the truth the writers tried their hardest to re-package in making this alternative universe.
Very grateful that you spotted it and shared with us.

Thanks girlfriday,
I could always count on you to capture the essence of the story. I agree with you - this story really get at the heart. I will love this drama for a long time, it has been memorable and truly a journey.
It was a joy to watch this along with an international kindred spirits who shared their thoughts in this forum. It is a beautiful thing to experience. This story has much international flavor and distinct personalities and characters and unpredictable plots that made the discussions alive.
I am very happy with the ending - I could not think of a different ending. I truly like the soundtrack, the cinematography and the outfits! esp for Hang Ah and Jae Ha.
I kept thinking - man if this pair will walk the hollywood red carpet - move over Brangelina - LOL
They are such a vibrant, shining couple!!!
The scene where they were discussing the casualties of war - it really brought fear to me - because in reality- war could happen in Korea and with nuclear weapons and modern warfare, chemical, biological...- it can annihilate the entire peninsula. It was all too close for comfort. In the age/era where we are living, war is on the headlines everyday ....it is a scary world out there.
I don't read the news for that matter- It's too scary. I watch dramas instead . I wish peace can be solved like in a drama - have a man and a woman fall in love from each warring side and make peace.
I want to thank the writers and all the production crew and all the cast for making this wonderful drama.
That you hearties and see you again!

despite the flaws in the last couple of episodes, the good things about this drama far outweighs what it lacks.
My favorite thing about this drama is the Ah-Ha couple, but like GF, what really captured me is the development of Jae Ha. It makes me think about how many other dramas could have developed their characters better but didn't because the plot of the drama was more central. And this is why this drama ranks high on my list of favorites. The development of the character is what keeps me anticipating week after week.

thanks girlfriday for the wonderful recaps!
admitedly, im not a fan of this drama, but i DO agree that the character development is much stronger than the plot itself (though the plot here is stronger than RTP even though i enjoy RTP more), and also TK2H really shine in the technical department.
i don't really see the point of killing off shi-kyung bot (and that's NOT the bot fangirl speech), for it felt like he died in vain when bong gu's punishment is so light, whereas everyone who CARES about shi kyung has to live in a world without him (THE HORRORS!).
his death may be compared to yong joo's in city hunter, but yong joo's was kind of unexpected, and when it came he was ALREADY beaten into a bloody pulp, whereas shi kyung bot's death is like, played purely for the dramatic effect, and to say the truth his death was expected, though unnecessarily required to be played out.
fans may not agree, but TK2H has been pretty predictable (maybe except the part where jae shin literally played a part in jae kang's death) throughout, imo.

well bishbash did say "im not a fan of this drama" from the onset so at least i know where you stand.
if you like the characterisation of TK2H then u will realise that killing SK represents all that is good and upright in this world. His death has a purpose in the narrative beyond the dramatics - people like Club M will continue to be present and rack havoc in this world, and there will be people pure, loyal and upright like SK who will die because of this evil. (I don't even need to start talking about terrorists who continue to threat people around the world.)
That is the stark reality that TK2H continuously paint through the 20 episodes. As I have mentioned in my other post (#118), peace will come at a cost, and painfully sometimes that cost is high. But we live in hope that peace can be achieved. And that scene where JH spoke with BG is powerful - evil will continue but it doesn't stop our King from being King and being there for his people.

I love the way JH asked for HA's forgiveness. Although we all knew from the previews that he was going to make amends with her, I was totally unprepared at the way he did it. His gift of the 3 step skin care product was thoughtful, appropriate, and came straight from the heart. His proposal is the BEST proposal I've ever heard, and this was after I had watched 'The Vow'. Both were pleasantly unexpected in their delivery and what made them so unique was that, it was something so Jae Ha-ish!

I actually thought it was far from predictable. there may be some elements that were predictable but like what @yellow buttercup mentioned, the way the scenes were executed gave it a totally different feel that even if you knew what 's gonna happen, it still pulls you in with all your emotions as what it originally intended. I'm never been as disappointed at a finale as I do this. Granted, K2H is one of THE best drama I've ever seen but I feel the finale just fell so short of the standard it set for itself with the last 18 eps.
The finale just felt rushed and careless throughout that they couldn't even show how the PEOPLE were affected by our Earnest Bot. I hated the way they handled his death and how it was just treated as just a passing point in the story when HE was so influential and prominent in SO many ppl's lives-especially that of Jae-Ha! I don't get why he had to be killed and WHY his death was treated like nothing. :(
Gosh, why couldn't it have been the Old Sec (Cowardly spineless idiot of a father) that died instead? He still hasn't redeemed himself as far as I'm concerned. It wouldn't have been PERFECT if he had put himself in danger as a way of repenting for his actions that allowed such DAMAGE to the family.
So sad after EVERYTHING Jae-shin went through, she still gets everything taken away. Sure, life goes on but there's always going to be this part of her that will ache even while she smiles and moves on.
I tried finishing the finale but I just.couldn't.
It hurt too much.

We can agree to disagree as with everything in life but I just wanted to point out that Eun Skunkretary has paid the heaviest price. Taking his life would be kinder than what he has lost.
I remember a dinner conversation once when someone mentioned that Mr Al Fayed of Harrods was an evil fella and deserved to have his son die. I had to remind my friend that no one ... no one deserves to see their own flesh and blood die, no matter how evil. It would be kinder to tear the flesh and suck the blood from them than to watch helplessly as your child lies six feet under you.
I despised Eun Skunkretary and even Jae Ha's forgiveness did not quite ease the resentment I felt towards him. But when Shi Kyung first blamed him for heaping a shameful legacy on him, I felt my heart waver as that is one of the most painful things to hear from your child.
And then the death ...
No, no one deserves that.
Shi Kyung's death is still unjustified to me but at least, now my heart is at peace (and in pieces) for Eun Skunkretary.

@Duncerblur good one!
After reading your comment, my question as to WHY did Eun Shi Kyung have to die, was answered.
"I despised Eun Skunkretary and even Jae Ha’s forgiveness did not quite ease the resentment I felt towards him."
What Secretary Eun did can never be fully forgiven but the death of his son, Shi Kyung, was a form of redemption for his sins. It was an absolute harsh one but I think it finally brought home to Secretary Eun, the magnitude of his wrongdoings, be it a direct or indirect chain of reactions. (I mean Jae Kang and his wife died because of him, Jae Shin lost the use of her legs because of him etc).
BUT, redemption aside, Shi Kyung's death still isn't justified.
Justified; "Having, done for, or marked by a good or legitimate reason".
Shi Kyung dying will NEVER be justified for any of us. He didn't die protecting the King which in turn meant protecting the nation. He didn't die for HIS OWN sins. He died because of Bong Gu's self-absorbed, selfish actions to kill off anyone or anything that he couldn't possess.
p.s. *sniff* It's been 3 days since the fictional man died but my heart still mourns. Will it take my 4 whole years just like Jae Shin did T____T

I agree. Shi Kyung's death is not justified in any way and I did not write this comment for that purpose. In fact, from a writing point of view it was not only gratuitous and desperate, it was embarrassing. The more I analyse it, the more I feel a sense of embarrassment on behalf of the writers.
It is poor writing and all the justifications and rationalising do not excuse it.

I think they actually caved to ratings. This week was the finale and it was also up against RTP's finale. They needed to pull a real ratings stunner and killing one of the fave characters would do it.
It is a cheap shot and a desperate move. I understand it from a production point of view but from a writer's point of view, it is unforgivable and is an insult to good writing.
It is one of the reasons why I lost a little respect for the writers. I'd been thrilled that they presented such strong writing and an integrity not to fall into the ratings game.
This proved that even they were not immune. I suppose I just hate waking up to the reality of this business ... something that happens too regularly for my liking.

I mentioned before but I can understand SK's death... TK2H is just a "black" comedy drama and it is a story about the growth of the king (JH) as its title suggests so if SK who represents right, just and full belief in JH is to be alive and happy, JH's world would be complete and too perfect... don't you think?

Thank you, GF for a great final recap. It was an entertaining ride. The drama should be titled The Making of a King" really.GF has touched on all the good points. I really feel that the great nations like US and China corrupt, being controlled by a crazy guy like John Mayer is ridiculous .This drama sure does not paint those countries in a good light. The last 2 episodes..I feel the show could have gone a little deeper and really get right down to our guts but it chose to be showy. It tried to add tension with the threat of war,but I , for one, did not feel it because we all know that is not going to happen. It is still a good drama, but it never got top notched although the potential was there.

I was kind of disappointed watching this RAW but I think it's because this episode triumphs on dialogue so I guess I'll wait for the subs to come out. As Girlfriday pointed out, a lot of things I wanted to happen in the final episode didn't happen. I was kind of hoping for an explosive finale, gun-a-blazing, because of the threat of war and all, but it's just my inner wish.
The last two episodes felt kinda rushy to me - the potential is there (it could have been more than 2 episodes), but there just wasn't enough time to explore further into it and I felt disconnected as we weren't given time to mourn for Shi-kyung properly. I wished they had put in a scene of Jae-ha fondly remembering/reminiscing Shi-kyung, even if it's 5 seconds short, and a friend by Jae-shin's side, because she looked terribly lonely to me in the last scene.
Nevertheless, this show has some of its best (and cringeworthy) moments and I'll definitely remember those good moments in day to come.
Anyway, finally my addiction is over!:P

Okay, this is why I shouldn't watch this without subs (I'm sorry! :( Is there a delete button for the post above?). Sighs. I did a 150 degrees turn on my opinion after watching with subs and finally reading the recap above (30 degrees is still in mourning for Shi-kyung and for the rush). Now I'm kind of satisfied with the ending, even with Shi-kyung's death, however unnecessary plotwise, because everyone was fondly remembering him at the end, especially Jae-shin. Everyone dies in the end, and no matter how painful it is for the living, the living must continue living. It's sad, but it's also inevitable. Shi-kyung will always have a special place in Jae-shin's heart as 'First Love'.
I love the power couple and this episode reminds me what this show is all about in the first place: The North-South relationship represented by Jae-ha and Hang-ah. The ending is sort of open-ended with the North-South relationship still on the works (no miraculous recoveries in this drama) but I like it. Could've extended the storyline by half an episode, just to nail in that emotional impact and tie political loose ends. Just saying.
It's been a wonderful journey. Thank you gf for the insightful recaps :) and thank you TK2H for these 2 months. I don't think I can take another drama so soon after I've been sucked emotionally dry because of this show.

"It was the making of a king."...loved it!
"And perhaps that’s the final step he learns in becoming a true leader—to let his soldiers fight for what they believe in, to put the country and the mission before his heart."...
And that’s why I really, really wanted Jae-ha to walk away from Bong-gu’s jail cell with this one retort: “I am king.”
BOOYAH.!!! why did he not say that in his face! lol...

His name is Lee Do Kyung, and he plays Kim Nam Il, Hang Ah's long suffering father.
The very first time I set eyes on him was at the WOC announcement. I disliked him immediately. His square jaws and a thick head of stuck-up hair told me he's a traditional father figure. You know, those you can't never please, who always wants you to be better, better still. And then his walk, a very peculiar sashaying walk (not that different from his future son-in-law in some way). That seemed to me a politician's dance moves for the next deal and best hedge.
And now of course we know he is all those things. He managed to survive in a hostile and competitive working environment. He bragged about his darling daughter shamelessly, not knowing or refusing to believe that the apple of his eye might need to find a man, and SOON. He did not think a prince was worthy of his daughter. And he had a hard time even persuading himself to trust the South, despite his position as the deputy minister in charge of unification.
Fast forward to this episode. He had to get her daughter back to the safety of the motherland, where his wife was buried and where he will be, one day. He knew Hang Ah was torn. He almost caved in. But, with the very real possibility of never seeing her again?! Plus how knew the hostile Southerns would do this Northern woman? Better to have her back where he could watch over her.
But, how about her life after the father's gone? How about the coming, terrible war? What if she never smiled again? I was really teary when Father Kim took out the air tickets for them to bolt. He was willing to give up everything and become an exile, perhaps a fugitive. "The king can visit you." He said to Hang Ah, knowing that's whom she really wanted to spend her life with.
Father Kim could only do so much in his position. But he leaked whatever he knew to Hang Ah. He gave her the pep talk before the meeting, downplaying his own safety and just wishing her a pleasant meeting with the king. I love his sigh and his loss of strength (he had to lean back to get support) after the talk with Hang Ah. And then he sashayed his way into the top guy's office as if it's for another boring meeting.
He knew when to talk and when to keep mum in front of the big guy. He so wanted the decision to go Hang Ah's way so he chipped in anyway he could. But he was also wise to know the top guy did not need more pressure, or even a sound when he's wrestling with the big question.
When everything was solved and came time to give his daughter away, he said, "it'd be great if you mom were here." I cried. As he cried, silently, hiding away, did not want to spoil the moment.
Can you deny giving this grandfather the pleasure of seeing that cutest as cutie pie grandson? He was like a kid himself, waving his arms, almost falling down from the chair.
Kim Nam Il, you are so lucky to have Hang Ah as a daughter, and Hang Ah, and Jae Ha, are so lucky to have you as a father!

No, I'm sorry Ceda, I don't agree with you this time
Truthfully, the whole parents thing in TK2H is amazing, evenn in Eun family.
I'd rather to say that Sec. Eun actually only make one grave mistake, revealing the King's vacation location. But his perfectionism and his fear what if his son know this mistake are his motivation which led to other mistakes. He was afraid to admit that he is isn't perfect and is as weak as others, particularly toward his son, whom he know so stern and putting him as his role model.
Have you heard the Saying: "A son grow with looking at his father's back" (or so does it sound), this is what matter to Sec. Eun. And how lovely this drama is, when Sec. Eun finally admit his defeat..the camera pan on his back, at the end it's a tired and defeated back.

@topper, @reglest
nicely put. Sec Eun was not necessarily bad but like what reglest said, that one grave mistake he made snowballed into something infinitely bigger that's gotten way out of hand.
But I believe he's still a good father, just a victim of unfortunate circumstances (and a lot of really bad choices).

@AnnMichelle: What a great and fitting tribute to HA's father. He's definitely one of my favourite parent in any drama. I loved how he always put his love for HA above everything else.
One scene that stands out in my mind is at the hospital when HA miscarried. It really touched me to see him consoling her instead of judging and scolding her. Being Asian, i think most Asian fathers would not have reacted the way he did, to put it mildly. HA was not disadvantaged by losing her mother at a young age because she had an awesome dad who was both hard and soft when needed.
What I would have loved to see in this final episode was JH bringing HA & son to visit the grandfather like he promised in episode 12 when HA returned with him to SK afer the proposal. How sweet would that be?

@babes,
Yes, yes, how can I forget that scene!
Remember he at first tried to play down the seriousness of the miscarriage (of the pregnancy actually). And then he muttered to himself "can't say it is nothing really." He was struggling. But his first concern has always been Hang Ah. So I think in that instance he transferred his sadness and frustration to Jae Ha (and I don't blame him).
I find this among lots of Asian fathers that I know. They look very stern, and WILL get mad over your mistakes. But they turned around quickly too, and were very practical like finding solutions to help you or finding scapegoat to take the blame!

I love this analysis just as much as I love Hang Ah's dad!
I love how he was so supportive of her decisions as an individual even when he disagreed. He respected her as an adult. Even in this episode when he wanted to make her go North he still stepped back at the end and told her it was her decision to make.
When his daughter was hurt, he was fiercely protective; when she was happy, he was happy for her. So much love for him and the writers who made him that way.

That was one of the most brilliant tributes I have read in a while, AnnMichelle!
It said everything I felt and totally encapsulated my journey with Hang Ah's father .. from the first misconception to the total love now.
The actor is pure gold as every gesture and mannerism is so spot on and he had led us into Mr Kim's psyche with such subtle mastery that I am in awe.
Even if the script was well written, his acting was the low-key yet completely mesmerising stuff of legend.
The odd gait. The brushing of face to hide tears. The awkward patting of hair to console. The crack in his voice.
Shite, I am bringing myself to tears here ...

Haha. Booyah indeed.
It's been a while since I got so hooked up on a kdrama (usually I only read the recaps, decide what scene would be interesting based on the recaps and then watch that part only. I don't even remember when was the last time I watched the whole full series of a drama) and The King 2 Hearts got me full on addicted.
I wanted to slap Jae-Ha when he was being an ass but pat him on the back whenever he moved forward, cheered on Hang-Ah when she played Jae-Ha back and when she was being such a badass heroine, felt heartbroken when Jae-Kang and (especially) Eun Shi Kyung died, cried along with Jae-Shin and unconciously smiled everytime I saw Yong-Bae and Dong Ha on screen. It's so amazing how this drama makes every characters seem like real human being in real world. This drama is the kind of fantasy that I will remember dearly.
And for that, despite its flaws along the way, I am happy that I somehow decided to start watching The King 2 Hearts after reading only two weeks recap from girlfriday (although after that I had to endure the weekly pain of waiting. Definitely not gonna do this again in the meantime).
Ah. I am so gonna miss this drama, aren't I?

thank you, my dear GF for the recap. It's wonderful as usual. And thank you for providing us, the hearties a place to curse, cry, and make comments here.
K2H is definitely one in million drama. Thank you dear gutsy writers, director, actors for making it such a wonderful and awesome drama. LSG, HJW, JJS, LYJ, and other actors, you guys are daebak. I've never seen such a great performance in dramas recently. You guys make us the hearties feel like the characters as a part of our lives. When you cry we all cry together with you. When you laugh and share some sweet moments we squeal. When you feel like killing Bonggu, we're ready to say: "we're right behind you!".
Now I can say that I love the way you end it, Show, although previously I hate it when I thought you killed SK for nothing. See, somehow SK 'revived' in the last ep..although only in JS's imagination. And boy that was a bittersweet moment. But I like it.

And I like that the point isn’t that he defeated one big bad villain (though of course we need his victory over Bong-gu), but that he finds out that he is strong, and forges ahead to fight more battles and more villains with that power."
oh GF, what can I do without you? thank you for putting it very well. Totally agree. This is about JH, about how he grows out of his old 'useless' self. And thanks to the people around him--even Bonggu---he surely deserves to call himself a King. Long live King Jae Ha!

I think they could have thrown in just a few lines about the impact Shi-kyung's death had on Jae-ha. There was a perfect moment where the commander was taking about soldiers dying, where they cups have added in something about him not wanting anyone else to die because of club m...but I totally agree, his dying was pointless.
All in all a solid series, which converted me into a Seung-gi fan and introduced me to my crush if the moment Jo Jung-seok (please keep acting in dramas).

The title has at least two possible meanings: Jae Ha's heart as a man and his heart as a king and/or Jae Ha and Hang Ah's two hearts aligned to one purpose. (See the line in this episode when Hang Ah says something like "Isn't your heart my heart?")

I'm sure it's totally obnoxious to quote myself on this, but it's late and even though I *could* rephrase this to make it into a new comment, why do the work when I've already done it? I wrote quite a lot about my interpretation of the title back in the episode 12 recap. Here's the relevant part:
***
The title is pretty lame sounding and I was against it for a long time, but I’ve actually grown to like it. I think that the meaning works on a few levels. I’m not sure how much of this translates to the Korean, but in English, here’s how I interpret it:
-Jae ha’s journey is one of becoming a king to the hearts of Koreans. At the beginning of the drama, the king is viewed by the public largely as an ineffectual nepotistic position. But we’re seeing, over time, that Jae-ha is gaining the respect and support of the public. So not only are we watching him grow into the role of king, but we’re also seeing the royal family, led by JH, win over the hearts of the public. This ties into the password he used to lock the mysterious box he sent to Bong-gu (“people”). Bong-gu may have money and power, but Jae-ha has the love and respect of the people. And in that, Jae-ha will unlock a greater power than anyone imagined was possible for a position based largely on tradition and ceremony.
-The two hearts mentioned in the title can refer both to the division between North and South Korea and to Jae-ha’s relationship with Hang-ah (which is largely symbolic of the North-South relations). This is the story of a king not only reaching out to the hearts of his own public, but of one king learning to lead (or at least gain the respect of) “2″ countries. It is also the story of a man learning to bridge the divide between two human hearts (his and Hang-ah’s) both of which are weighed down by the prejudices between the two nations.
-Now that Hang-ah and Jae-ha are teaming up to take on Bong-gu, the title could indicate that the king’s role is composed of two hearts–Jae-ha’s and Hang-ah’s. Alone, JH is just a man, but with HA by his side, he is a king.
-This is a much less “meaty” interpretation, but the title always makes me think of “2 of hearts” (as in, the playing card), which nicely references Bong-gu’s magic schtick.

Yes, at the end..they still don't explain the '2 hearts', but I think because it's symbolically metamorphose and among what you said. Actually this open question is beautiful, because it depend on our imagination to answer it. I don't know how I'll put it into the script to force my explanation to the viewers...well..
Same with you..I find it pretty lame, what's that I mean, but as the story grows, I love it, and I accept it as an entity of identity of the show it self :)

agree with you reglest. the title is open to interpretation. And this is what this drama has been doing all along. It never spoonfeeds the answer but, instead, leaves it to the viewing public (at least, to the ones who decided to stick with it) to come to their own conclusions, whatever that may be.

‘The King 2 Hearts’ The Meaning of ‘2 Hearts’
http://lsgairenint.tumblr.com/post/23770406248/the-king-2-hearts-the-meaning-of-2-hearts
Many people assume that the ‘2 Hearts’ is referring to the two main characters of the drama, Lee Jae Ha (Lee Seung Gi) and Kim Hang Ah (Ha Ji Won). However, it has been revealed that ‘2 Hearts’ had a deeper meaning than that. ‘2 Hearts’ in the title was added to represent North and South Korea who eventually compromise with each other to become one peaceful nation.

The other day I was watching the 1N2D episode when the gang went to Mt Baekdu. They went thru China and just across the border, they could see N Korea and even N Koreans going about their work. The guys were surprised yet saddened that while most people from other countries could enter N korea with the valid visas, South Koreans could not enter at all.
Really sad. I actually think that this visit had left a really big impact on SG. He even said that his grandfather came from the North. Perhaps that's why he wanted to do this drama as well and why he poured his whole heart and soul into his acting.

My gosh, GF, I applaud you...
You expressed so eloquently in words how exactly I felt about TK2H.
Thanks for your recaps, which were all very insightful and humorous as well.
And thanks all of you for sharing your thoughts on DB.
It was a hell of a ride isn't?
Wish the ride ended with a bigger bang but I'll take how it ended anyway because I was swept up in each character's development and ultimately this is what matters most, that I fell in love with the characters and cried when they cry, laughed when they laugh, love when they love.
TK2H is DAEBAK.

"And that’s why I really, really wanted Jae-ha to walk away from Bong-gu’s jail cell with this one retort: “I am king.”
Awesome! Stupid writers They didn't think of this one TT
But i'm still thankful.
So, i watched this drama 'til the end and every minutes of it without skipping scene. It doesn't happen that often because I quickly get bored. Tough, it wasn't perfect, i loved it. Despite the conflict set up... the relationship and the characters really Really moved me.
thank you for these recap. And see you soon

JH has evolved from his wants-to-have-the-last-word Prince to a King who thinks strategically & wisely. When he sent BG that Tara gift...he wanted to rub in BG's face the strength of his saram. By doing so he endangered HA and his mum gravely.
In present times, he has avenged BG for all the wrongs he did on the royal family....it doesn't serve his purpose to have a verbal sparring match with that lunatic. Let him have that last word....at the end of the day he's still behind bars while JH is working hard in making his hyung's dream come true and living by SK's faith!!

I am at work right now but after reading the recap and comment from GirlFriday I am so framing it. What she said is so true in every form. This has got to be the best k-drama I have watched in a very very long time. Well not that I am that old. Ha! Ha! ^_^

I had the time to re watch the episode 20, since the last episode was mainly spent talking and negotiating about the war if you watched it raw you will tend to judge it and get bored, but after reading the insightful recaps from various sites I appreciated the ending all the more , the writer didnt put a period and a happy ever after at the closing shot cause they know that HAng Ah and jae ha will continue to facr tribulations that will test their love and faith in their countries, it's like the writer had opened a window for us to get a glimpse of reality by portraying the North and South Korea conflict that , there will always be a Bong Gu out there who will test our abilities ; values but as long as we have the love of the people around us we will always emerge victorious from our personal battles. Really all of us definitely has a Bong Gu in our lives, it is up to us to challenge , overcome and emerge a victor when faced with a an opponent like him. King 2 Hearts will hold the number one drama in my list and I doubt another drama of this caliber will come anytime soon.
I am glad I took this journey along with the fictional characters that at times feels TOO real that makes me believe that the Royal Family and JH and HA are somewhere raising their kids and are continuously fighting to reform a society that would be suitable for the next generation to come to live in, without fear of war.
I am soo much invested in this drama that no words would suffice or qualify its importance to me personally.

I am so sad and don't know how long this ugly feeling will last. I just don't like it...not one bit.
Overall, I am satisfied. The scene of JH walking out away from the jail cells as Bong Gu is screaming his lung out is EPIC. The background music makes it that much better. The wedding scent...I appreciate the symbolic messages that it was trying to convey. JH steps over the yellow line and they both bow to the South. They stepped over the yellow line again and this time, bow to the North. She is now South Korean and he...a North Korean...they're both Koreans. What did pissed me off was that Bong Gu didn't get his ass kicked...not even a tap!!! WTF!!! I would have loved to see blood gushing out of his filthy mouth and it'll be even greater if HA was the person doing the physical torturing.
In remembrance of my SK...our Earnest Bot. I cannot think about him without shedding tears. His love for Princess JS is pure...innocent...deep...true...unselfish. I think I'll live happily alone for the rest of my life if I was loved by someone like SK. Their awkward connection...his emotionless love...it's like I can't find the right words to describe their relationship. All I know is I love those two so much. They became more of my favorite towards the end...sometimes even more than JH-HA. I love those two couples equally throughout the drama though.
K2H was definitely not my most favorite drama, but it is the most memorable one. It is simply brilliant. It stands out above all in my history of K-drama watching. The one drama that I tried to avoid watching the most and ended up being obsessed about the most. Quality, plot, cinematography, characters, etc...were execellent and superior to most dramas these days. It took me on one hell of a roller coaster ride. I AM TIRED AS HECK! It had me fangirling one moment and an emotional wreck the next. And to my surprise...this has to be the longest review I've ever wrote about any drama...and that includes Taiwanese dramas, Thai dramas, Japanese dramas, Chinese dramas and even animations (like Naruto...which I am a HUGE fan of).

thank you for recapping this drama all along GF <3
and I am satisfied with the ending. well, the only thing that makes me still... not really satisfied.. is Shi Kyung's death. I still don't get it why. If only he was still alive, everything will be perfect. :( but well I'm fine with this ending too. I love this drama. :D my time was greatly spent. :D
