The King 2 Hearts: Episode 18
by girlfriday
I love a drama that deepens the conflict as we go. So many shows will spin their wheels in the final stretch to just prolong the inevitable, but here we launch into a whole new conflict, as the final battle begins to unfold. And I swear, it feels like a reward just for me, but bromance takes center stage, and it is awesome.

EPISODE 18 RECAP
Hang-ah stumbles into a building to ask the couple inside if she can make one international phone call. The man inside eyes her warily, noting her accent and her bloody arm, and tells her to wait. He goes in the back, while his wife pours her a cup of tea.
Grateful, Hang-ah takes off her watch and puts it on the table. The woman gives it back, and then warns, “Run away, now! Hurry!” But it’s too late – as soon as she stands up to go, police officers march in to arrest her. Damnit.
She gets hauled off to be investigated as a North Korean fugitive, and when she gives her name, the guy just laughs, “The Kim Hang-ah who’s engaged to the king of South Korea? Yeah right.” HA. There is a certain irony to fame working against you.
The guy in charge gets a call from Bong-gu, who assures them that they should by all means follow their protocol… but there’s nothing to stop them from, say, detaining her a little longer, is there?
He reminds them that he didn’t not kill Hang-ah because he was afraid of them, but because she’s such a good pawn in the North-South game. Oh, ’cause I thought you couldn’t kill her because she escaped from your cookie fortress.
Hang-ah rattles the cage in her jail cell, asking when she’ll get to see a doctor for her arm. The guard tells her she’ll be transferred in a week, and the doctor will treat her then. A week? For a bullet wound? Though she’s more concerned about where she’ll be transferred to than anything.
Despite the injured arm, she spends her time working out like the badass soldier that she is, always preparing for her escape.
She finally sits down to rest, a wave of despair about to hit her, but suddenly Jae-ha’s hand appears on her shoulder. With her bruised and battered hand, she reaches out to touch it.
She looks up and suddenly he’s there, sitting right beside her, his arm around her shoulders. He smiles and she looks up at him with tear-filled eyes.
He wraps both arms around her tightly, and she closes her eyes. They sit like that for just a moment, and then he fades, leaving her sitting there with her hand on her own shoulder.
Man, it’s that moment he fades that really stabs you in the heart. Beautifully played. I like this vision even more than his a few episodes back, because it’s wordless but delivers a stronger impact.
She opens her eyes to find him gone. A tear falls, and she holds her hand to her heart as she sinks back.
Meanwhile, Jae-ha pursues his plan of attack: prosecuting Bong-gu in the International Criminal Court.
Secretary Eun heads out to his fishing spot and stops in his tracks to see Shi-kyung waiting there for him. He stands there with a smile on his face. It’s enough for Dad to know how he feels.
I’m glad Shi-kyung isn’t totally broken, but the reconciliation does come too fast for me—you were just sobbing in the pouring rain, remember? These are all things I want for them, but paced waaay way slower.
They sit down and Shi-kyung says that he always found Dad difficult. He knew what Dad wanted of him, but also that he could never deliver on those expectations. So he was always scared of him.
He says that’s probably why he screamed at him—to make up for all the complexes Dad gave him. “But I’m happy now. I think I can finally be independent of you.” Good for you.
He tells Dad not to think that anything he does is because of him. He repeats Jae-ha’s words: “You’re you, and I’m me.” So no matter what he does, it’s his choice. Hm, that sounds like dangerous martyr talk to me. Don’t you go doing anything stupid, ya hear me?
They have a nice father-son bonding moment over fish, or lack thereof, and laugh and smile together.
But then Dong-ha bursts into Jae-ha’s meeting to warn him that Shi-kyung is trying to go to China anyway. Drat. I KNEW you were being too smiley for a regular day! He gets yelled at by his commanding officer, and just replies, “I haven’t once taken vacation days, so I’m just going to use them.” Ha. Did you really think that would work??
It doesn’t, so then he takes out his resignation letter. What? You’re quitting to go be a hero? Dong-ha tries to stop him as he packs up his things, but his mind’s made up. Dong-ha sighs, “You can’t leave the country anyway.”
OH. SNAP. Did Jae-ha put you on a no-fly list? HAHAHA.
He storms into Jae-ha’s office yelling, but the secretary tells him no one’s allowed inside. He can only talk from outside the door. Hee.
Shi-kyung says that they have to do this to make sure Bong-gu appears in the International Criminal Court, otherwise mounting a case against him does no good. Jae-ha counters that he has plenty of super secret spies he can send in to do that job.
But Shi-kyung asks what happens when Bong-gu kills all those agents. Bong-gu knows that Shi-kyung is Jae-ha’s right-hand man. That means that for the sake of driving Jae-ha crazy, he’ll keep Shi-kyung by his side. Damnit, stop making sense!
He yells, “Why can’t I go? Because I’m your friend? If it’s that then don’t worry. I have never once thought of you as a friend!”
W-wu-wuh? Nooooooo! We survived this long without noble idiots in this drama, and now you’re telling me the bromance is going there? Take it back! You ARE FRIENDS! You are! You… are… *whimper.*
He pleads with Jae-ha to be stronger than this. He turns to go, but then suddenly he swivels back, grim with determination. He yells, “Lee Jae-ha!” OMG. Did you just call the king by name? In banmal?
“Go ahead and spend the rest of your life in there, looking for friends! Because Kim Hang-ah is gone, you’re scared of losing me too, aren’t you? I’ve long let go of my guilt. So GET IT TOGETHER!”
That was so awesome. That gets Jae-ha out of the room right quick. He fumes, “Lee? Jae? Ha?”
Shi-kyung: “You said we were friends.” HEE. I love Quippy Comeback Bot best of all. Jae-ha roars, calling him a bastard.
But then Shi-kyung just stares with his super earnest puppy eyes, and Jae-ha caves with a sigh. Perhaps this is why you weren’t allowed in the room in the first place. I love that this part of the exchange needs no words.
Shi-kyung promises (now back to formal speech), “I will return.” Jae-ha lets out a shaky sigh. I’m not even going to warn you that you’d better return, because there’s no option to do otherwise. You WILL return, gorramit.
Bromantic study montage time. They plan their mission, down to the letter, complete with A SECRET CODE. Is there a secret handshake to go with? Sometimes I really love this drama.
Jae-ha asks Shi-kyung to do one last thing before leaving—go see Jae-shin. “You know the condition she’s in. And you know her heart. No matter how frustrating you are, if you don’t know that…”
Shi-kyung: “Can I do whatever I want?” Rawr?
Jae-ha: “You mean you haven’t, till now?” Dude, you don’t even know the half of it. Shi-kyung asks if he really can, just once, treat her not as the princess but meet her person-to-person. Jae-ha corrects him: “It’s man-to-woman.”
Shi-kyung: “Can I, just this once, follow my heart, and see her?” Jae-ha doesn’t answer, and instead turns around and picks up the phone. He orders that Jae-shin be brought out to the garden, and no one allowed within two kilometers of her, “…except Eun Shi-kyung.”
Wingman for the win. He turns around, “Will that do?” Shi-kyung starts hyperventilating now that he has no excuses left.
Jae-shin gets brought outside and then they take her wheelchair away, leaving her with nothing but a picnic basket. She wonders what’s going on, and then Shi-kyung comes up the road to meet her.
She asks if he knows about the memory she recovered, “It’s like a monster, isn’t it?” She starts to cry. But he tells her that the person who gave away the Anmyundo location was his father, and he’s decided that he’s not going to let himself feel guilty about that. “Because my father is my father, and I’m me.”
He kneels down in front of her. “It’s the same for you. It was because of them. It wasn’t your fault.” He takes her hand and tells her that recovering the memory alone makes her impressive.
He says it again, “It’s not your fault.” He holds her hand as she sobs.
Then a little while later, he piggybacks her through the garden, as he tells her that he’s taking a short vacation. He says that he’ll give her some homework, and once she completes it, he’ll have returned.
“Say It’s not my fault a hundred times a day.” Aw. She tells him that he has to do the same then. They both agree. “Laugh three times a day, even if you have to force it.” He adds going to therapy diligently and practicing being in front of people, and she agrees.
They reach her wheelchair and he puts her back in it. Still kneeling, he adds one last thing: “Sing again.” She kisses him on the cheek, startling him, and asks what else.
He stands up to give his answer, and plants a kiss on her.
But his own impulsive move sends him reeling, and he steps away from her, more in shock than she is. Heh. He quickly apologizes, and she asks what for, but he feels so awkward that he just gets behind her and speed-wheels her back to the palace. Pfft. What happened to the gutsy guy who told her oppa that he was gonna do whatever he wanted? Cracks me up.
And then he berates himself in his office for losing control. That was you, losing control? Whoa there, wild child. He thinks of something and decides to write a letter. I will admit, I hope it’s to Jae-ha, but it’s probably for Jae-shin.
Secretary Eun sits at his fishing spot and this time an entire royal entourage arrives. It’s Jae-ha. He tells ajusshi about what Shi-kyung did, and starts to say that he tried to stop him, but corrects himself: “No, I sent him.”
He says he pretended to put up a fight because sending him freely made him such a bad person. But Secretary Eun sees right through the guilt parade. Jae-ha says that there’s so much to prepare for the case, and asks him to return to the palace: “Like you did for hyung, come be by my side.”
Secretary Eun looks over at him, moved and startled. Jae-ha warns that the pay will be downgraded though—times are tough. Heh. They smile, and then ajusshi says he has to seek forgiveness from one person first.
He goes to see the queen mother, to confess his wrongdoing. She already knows, but I think it’s important that he says it and seeks forgiveness. She just asks with tears in her eyes about how Jae-kang was that day, since Secretary Eun is the last person to see him alive.
He tells her that the king was happy and smiling, and she says that’s enough for her.
The good guys get a break and finally recover the video player from Jae-ha’s hostage standoff in North Korea, but it’s too damaged to recover any data. Drat.
Jae-ha sighs and turns to hyung’s portrait, “You happy?” He’s just talking, but that phrase is the one that opens up his diary recorder, which he ignores. But then suddenly, something dawns on him. Aww, yeah.
He looks up at the portrait, and then over to the table and chairs sitting across the room, and then back at the recorder. Nice. I KNEW it would come in handy that his keyword was so conversational.
The music swells. He calls Shi-kyung. Mission is on. He walks down the memorial hall and into the pressroom to make his live public announcement. The world tunes in, and so does Bong-gu.
Jae-ha announces that the late king’s death was murder, and he has the proof. He plays the video. Hell yeah. It’s a top-angle view (because it’s aimed at the desk, if you remember Jae-kang’s footage from before) but it captures both Jae-ha and Bong-gu sitting across from each other that day that he confessed to the murder.
Backtrack to that day, when Bong-gu himself had said the phrase, “You happy?” which started the recording that neither of them noticed. The reporters and the public watch, horrified, as Bong-gu lays it all out on the video—that the real reason he killed Jae-kang was because he kept him out of the country, and sent him peacefully like a drunk idiot.
He makes that shudder-inducing quueck noise, and everyone who’s watching jumps out of their skin. Man, this is so awesome. And strangely even more horrifying out of context—he just seems like a pure monster. One of the reporters asks the man’s identity, and Jae-ah confirms it. Bong-gu sits frozen in his chair.
Jae-ha: “A king is not just a king. He is South Korea itself, and its 50 million people. Club M’s John Mayer murdered those 50 million people.” And with his game face on, he declares that he’ll be prosecuting him according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. (Specifically used to prosecute crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes, etc.)
Cut to Secretary Eun delivering their case to the court. Jae-ha continues: “We will fight. And we will capture him. We will uphold justice, and make him face the strict judgment of the law.”
Gah, goosebumps. I love a hero who fights within the system. Renegades are cool, but a king IS the system, and if he doesn’t have faith in that, his position is meaningless.
Needless to say, Bong-gu starts to panic, though he does his best not to show it. He tells his minion that it’s time to lay low, and orders him to call the prison and have Hang-ah moved.
But instead of doing that, Minion calls someone else in Club M to say that Bong-gu is now a liability. He orders a hit on Bong-gu… which Bong-gu overhears. I wish I could say that I’m surprised and shocked that you’d be betrayed by your own people, but who’re we kidding. Most of us were wondering how he lasted that long. Mia walks into the room, and minion starts crying instantly. Ha.
Shi-kyung and Dong-ha are hiding outside the compound, and Dong-ha worries about the plan, but Shi-kyung tells him to just do as he said, and pets him on the head before going in. Aw.
By the time we get back to Bong-gu, his minion’s already a dead fish. Shots ring out and they scramble, and Shi-kyung sneaks his way in. He gets into a fight with Mia, and I want him to kick her ass, but sigh, that’s not the plan, and he lets himself be captured.
She hauls onto his knees in front of Bong-gu and trains a gun to his head. Shi-kyung just tells him to kill him and get it over with. But Bong-gu thinks back to Shi-kyung’s initial rejection of rotten cookies, looks over at dead fish backstabber, and orders them to treat him well.
Shi-kyung hides his reaction, and Dong-ha watches him get hauled away from afar, crying. Aw. He calls Jae-ha to tell him that phase one is complete. Jae-ha hangs his head with a heavy sigh.
And then begins the horrible torture. They knew this going in—Jae-ha told him that he’d have to endure for an unbearably long time, otherwise giving in too quickly would seem false. I know they’re right, but aaauuuugh. They lay him on the ground and she threads a stick through his fingers, and then GRINDS his hand till his fingers break under her heel. Oof.
Hang-ah finally gets treated by a doctor in the prison. She winces from the pain, but he says it’s already healed over, so she’s overreacting. But of course it’s just a diversion…
While he turns his head to speak to the guards, she grabs him in a headlock and screams at the guards to step back. They panic and she orders the doctor to hand over his cell phone.
Jae-ha sits with Secretary Eun discussing the trial and IF YOU IGNORE THIS CALL I WILL KICK YOU IN THE NUTS. Thankfully, he answers. Hang-ah yells frantically into the phone, “Comrade Lee Jae-ha!”
She barely has time to tell him that she’s in a Chinese prison before an armed guard comes running in. He fires a shot into the air, and she drops the phone. He’s left screaming her name, not knowing if she’s dead or alive.
He tells Secretary Eun that he’s going to China right now. They rush to try and move her before the king arrives. He comes with troops both North and South (Dong-ha and Young-bae are both present).
He tells the prison’s commanding officer that a call from his fiancée originated here, and sends his men in to look for her. They search frantically, Young-bae especially falling all over the place, desperate to find Hang-ah in time.
They call out her name over and over, and then she finally hears it faintly. The guards have her somewhere removed, held at gunpoint, but she fights them off long enough to scream for Jae-ha.
He hears her, and takes off running toward the building off to the side. The agents follow. At the same time, the guards gag her and start to move her out, on the upper level.
They nearly miss each other, but then Hang-ah sees Jae-ha from behind, below her. She screams through her gag, and he hears her and comes running, and they finally lock eyes.
But they’re still moving her, and he races to catch up. She fights them off and manages to free herself long enough to run, but one of them grabs his gun and fires. Oh. Fuck.
She goes down. Jae-ha freezes just below her.
Blood drips down through the metal-grate floor to the lower level, at his feet.
He runs up the stairs as his agents secure the guards. She isn’t moving. He stumbles over to her with his head in his hands, not sure what to do, not ready to face it. He crouches down, hands shaking, and turns her over.
She looks up at him. He calls out her name like a wave of relief, and she screams from the pain. He looks down. It’s her leg. She was shot in the leg. Ohthankgoodness.
He cradles her in his arms, and she looks up and smiles, “Comrade Lee Jae-ha, it’s no big deal.” He clutches her to his chest for dear life, crying uncontrollably.
Wow, I was so wrapped up in that, I thought for sure it was the end of the episode. Man alive.
Bong-gu’s associate gives him the update and suggests they use Shi-kyung. He’s bloodied and currently enduring Chinese water torture. (Is that like a when in Rome thing?)
Bong-gu finds him being treated thusly and slaps Mia across the face. This is why you have no friends. He sits Shi-kyung down to make the offer: join his side. He seems to be playing right into their plan.
But Bong-gu is as shrewd as he is crazy, and needles Shi-kyung to take the offer as planned—after all, isn’t this a double agent mission? He points out Shi-kyung’s lack of a poker face, saying that someone with his personality isn’t cut out for mole work. I’m starting to agree. And worry.
Bong-gu says that really, Jae-ha is the bad guy for sending his friend into the enemy’s lair. I mean, he probably even pretended to put up a fight to appear less callous, but “he’s actually more ruthless [than me].”
He muses that if Jae-ha were born in a different time, he’d have slapped the faces of Yeonsangun and Nero. Ha. Shi-kyung counters that that’s all people like Bong-gu can see—what’s in front of his face.
He appeals to Shi-kyung’s vanity, asking him to set him straight then. He offers to let him get rid of anyone on his staff with a foul stench. Shi-kyung: “Aren’t you the cause of that stench?” Damn.
I love that knowing their plan doesn’t stop Bong-gu from trying to make Shi-kyung go darkside anyway. That’s HIS vanity, and they know it. Attempt #1 is a failure, but Bong-gu is determined to win Shi-kyung over. The fish is on the hook.
Hang-ah wakes up in bed (they’re still in China) and Dad scampers around to make sure she’s okay and getting rest, but she will have none of that—she asks for Jae-ha right this instant, freaking out about not wasting another minute in finding Bong-gu.
Jae-ha rushes in and she asks him, eyes wide with panic, if he has a plan for catching Bong-gu because they can’t let another minute pass with him out there. Jae-ha and Dad exchange worried looks and Dad leaves the room.
She asks again and again, and he tells her not to think about anything, and just rest. But she shakes her head no, getting more and more frantic. Tears start to fall, as she gasps, “How can I rest? Do you know what a scary person Kim Bong-gu is?”
She’s never once shown fear before this. Now I get why he and Dad were looking at each other so strangely.
He hugs her tight. “I’m sorry, Hang-ah-ya, for not protecting you. I know. I get it now, seeing you like this… how scared you were, how difficult it was for you. I know it now. I’m sorry Hang-ah-ya. I said I’d make you happy. But I’m a powerless bastard. I’m so sorry.”
She cries into his shoulder, her panic subsiding. Gah, the sight of her blue and purple hand clutching onto him just breaks my heart.
Jae-ha and Dad meet with a Chinese official who apologizes for the “incident” and Dad freaks out, but Jae-ha holds him back. He says that if they’re sorry, they can show it, by letting South Korean troops in country to catch Bong-gu.
The Chinese official in turn tells Bong-gu they’re no longer in cahoots, and orders him out of China in three hours. How perfect is it that Bong-gu’s bedroom is decorated like a child’s, full of oversized stuffed animals? It’s exactly as I pictured.
He’s short on time and moves, so he calls Shi-kyung over to make threats—what he got a taste of was Torture Lite, so if he doesn’t want to be begging to die, he should sign up for Team Blackhats.
His plan: have Shi-kyung pretend he’s succeeded in Mission Double Agent and then be a double-double agent, and feed Jae-ha false information about his whereabouts. He gives Shi-kyung time to think it over, or else he’ll end in bloody torture. And then he screams, “Why do you MAKE ME be this way?!” Yunno, I always found that to be the creepiest thing serial killers say.
Jae-ha sits with Hang-ah in bed and fills her in on everything. She freaks out at the news that he sent Shi-kyung. “That’s like entrusting a piece of meat to a tiger!” Aw, you think he’s a beefcake too?
Hang-ah: “If something goes wrong…” Jae-ha: “Then I’ll spend the rest of my life blaming myself…” He’s worried because there hasn’t been any contact, but says all they can do is wait. “We have to trust him.”
Shi-kyung’s torture just gets worse and worse, and Mia goes to town, threatening Dad and the princess like it’s Torture Christmas. Shi-kyung trembles, screaming out in pain. Did they finally do it? Did they break him?
Jae-ha gets a call. It’s Shi-kyung. He says that the plan worked and gives him the coordinates where Bong-gu will be… as Bong-gu listens. Jae-ha says their troops are arriving soon in country, so they’ll meet him there.
Shi-kyung asks if Jae-ha will come himself, but he says no—he’s found Hang-ah and she needs medical care. But Shi-kyung tells him he should come and witness Bong-gu’s capture with his own eyes, since this is what he’s been working towards. Bong-gu practically licks his chops at the king headed straight for his trap.
Jae-ha agrees and Shi-kyung gives him a place to meet. He sends Hang-ah home first, and she worries but he says it’ll be fine—it’s Eun Shi-kyung after all. He gives her a kiss and heads out.
Shi-kyung waits at an industrial plant and Jae-ha arrives, happy to see him. But Shi-kyung seems different, detached. Jae-ha asks why he’s lost so much weight, but he says nothing. We see snipers on the roof, and a bug behind Shi-kyung’s ear.
He takes Jae-ha in his own car without a security escort, and Jae-ha tries to make conversation on the way but Shi-kyung remains cryptically aloof. Hang-ah and Dad are on their way out, but she asks them to turn the car around—something doesn’t feel right.
Jae-ha and Shi-kyung arrive at a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean, and Jae-ha looks out, confused. Bong-gu is here? Shi-kyung says yes, so he follows. They climb through some rocks and come out onto the cliff, where Bong-gu is waiting with a team of gunmen.
Sitting across from each other are two thrones. One is empty, while Bong-gu sits in the other. He greets him with a smile and a bow, “Welcome, your majesty.”
Jae-ha turns slowly toward Shi-kyung…
Shi-kyung raises his gun in Jae-ha’s face.
Oh. Holy. Hell.
COMMENTS
AAAAUUUUUUUUUUGH. Damn is that a good ending. You finally learn how to do a cliffhanger right, just when it counts. The thing is, I still hold out faith that Shi-kyung is being a quadruple agent (or something, the math is confusing) – in that I think he and Jae-ha were banking on Bong-gu’s counter moves. This is chess, after all. Just with live pieces.
The thing that’s selling the other side though (that he really put on a black hat) is Shi-kyung’s performance, because he really did endure an insane amount of torture, and afterwards he seems hollowed out and lifeless. Even though I firmly believe he’s still got it together on the inside, seeing him that way puts everything into question. Nicely played.
No matter if this is Shi-kyung being a triple agent or not, that last image just kills me—him holding his gun out at Jae-ha like their first meeting. Before it meant nothing, but now it’s betrayal because of the friendship they’ve formed. Their relationship might honestly be my favorite thing about this drama, and if you kill that bromance, Show, I will break up with you.
I’m so glad that Jae-ha has finally made his move against Bong-gu and proud of the kind of king he’s become. He once laughed at Jae-kang for saying that the king was the people and that the throne belonged to them. He was the guy who called the royal family puppets and empty scarecrows, but in the end he puts his faith in the system and the people.
And I like the question of morality that Bong-gu raises, because after all, a king is often as ruthless and tyrannical as any mass murderer. But again that difference is people. At the end of the day, a king still answers to his people. A murderer does not. Though the system Jae-ha operates in is flawed and can be abused, it has a balance in place that keeps any one person from having too much power. Bong-gu just consumes endless power and wealth thinking that it’s enough, and is left asking why he doesn’t have what Jae-ha has. I love that it’s so simple – he has too much power to ever have what he really wants.
And Shi-kyung is the embodiment of that. He is in the purest sense the faith of the people in their king, and Bong-gu sees it. He wants it for himself like a shiny toy, thinking that possessing Shi-kyung will be the same as having his faith. The fact that Bong-gu and Jae-ha stand there on the cliff, waging war over one soldier – (besides the fact that the bromance tickles me pink) is the perfect distillation of that conflict. I didn’t think his capturing Hang-ah or Mom was anything more than a plot device, but the war over Shi-kyung feels vastly different—it’s their ideological war, and it’ll get at the heart of the central hero/villain conflict, which is exactly where I want to be before the finale.
Warning: I’ve been pretty lax about the spoiler posts in this thread, but if you post spoilers about next week’s finale (and I mean both episodes), you will get a pair of VERY CRANKY recaps from me. [Note: Proper spoiler etiquette is to mark anything even remotely spoilery in CLEAR, no uncertain terms, short of neon lights, so that anyone who doesn’t want to read it (namely ME) could see it from a mile away and swerve around your comment.] You have been warned. I hold a mean grudge, Lee-Jae-ha-style, and not the kind with revengey kisses either.

It's one of my favourite MVs too. I'm already tearing up just reading this page.
Yesterday, during my aqua aerobics class, I was as usual thinking about TK2H, and it dawned on me how comfortable I am being a part of this forum. Here, I can be myself - spazz as much as I what over LSG and the show, and I won't receive weird looks. Even my elder daughter who loves Kpop and was the one who introduced 1N2D to me and indirectly, LSG sometimes feels a little uncomfortable when I spazz too much! Anyway, she's now in India doing a community project, so I don't even have anyone to discuss the show with.
So I'm definitely going to miss all of you and the fun we had.

it is Victoria Day long weekend holidays here in Canada..
You know, they could not have picked the best actress for this role of Hang Ah - only Ha Ji Won can fill this role - she fits this role perfectly. She is not the typical delicate beauty, she is physically fit, charming and her face is a chameleon. She looks like a soldier in her uniform yet she is also passes for a Cinderella in a gown. She can be cute, coy and vulnerable and innocent yet can kick and punch and aim and shoot . She's a perfect actress.
I am officially fangirling with Ha Ji Won now.
I think the character of Hang Ah is the best ever written for a female character in kdrama. Hang Ah is a dream girl. Beauty and brawn and brain and heart and honor and virtue - she has it all.
I like that Hang Ah is portrayed as a woman - not just a officer who is intelligent, cold, tough, calculating, unyielding, strong -- but also a woman who falls in love and be a girl and likes girly stuff -- skin care and dating --A woman who can be vulnerable in front of her man, who acts coy and cute. A woman that also influences her man to do the right thing without controlling him. A woman who can be a girlfriend -to the princess- without jealousy and pettiness. A woman who hangs out with guys and be respected by them. Who has a loving relationship with her father and in-laws esp her future mother-in-law.
That's quite a feat to win the heart of a kdrama mother-in-law. :)
Hang AH - you are the epitome of the Virtuous woman .
I hope drama land will write more strong female characters like Hang Ah. She raised the bar for every female lead character.

I agree that Hang-ah is perhaps the best (or at least most awesome) kdrama female lead character I've encountered. This may sound weird, but part of what I love most about her is that on top of her obvious amazingness, she is imperfect. So many of these kdrama heroines are basically these perfect, selfless, virtuous caricatures of femininity. Hang-ah on the other hand gets pissed when she's wronged, she can act impulsively, she's a bit naive, and she cries when she goes through trauma just like anybody with a heart.
But in spite, or perhaps because of, these flaws, she is a true hero. She feels like a real person, and that makes her so much more interesting to me and so much more worthy of admiration.

totally agree! Hang Ah is the best female character ever written in a Kdrama. Her character is perfectly portrayed by Ms. Ha Ji Won which made her even more lovable. I agree to what rearwindow said that what made Hang Ah the most awesome female character is her imperfectness under her AWESOMENESS. Kudos to the writers for another job well done. Hang Ah's character really compliments Jae Ha's. DAEBAK. *switch to fangirling mode

Perfect recap of a perfect episode. This drama is so good it inspires EVERYONE to their best work, even down to recappers and subbers. The speed at which these two episodes were made available for us non-Korean speakers was just amazing! And your analogy of ShiKyung representing the people of Korea in toto was spot on.

My TK2H Finale Wish List:
Episode 19: REVENGE
A quick but painful Bong Gu / Minions resolution
–•– Bong Gu should be locked away in a tiny closet (mud brown walls) room; he should be made to watch videos (updated throughout the years) of JH-HA couple's happiness for the rest of his natural life.
–•– Bon Bon should also be locked away in a tiny closet room (pink walls) with audio of SK (on repeat) telling her about what she did to her mother for the rest of her natural life.
Episode 20: NOTHING BUT GIDDY HAPPY LOVE
–•– JH-HA marriage **ceremony + honeymoon—all the whistles and bells…nothing is to be left out; smooching, and YES, even a bed scene or two ;) ;)
**JS (walking) will of course be the maid of honor and SK the best man :) Everyone, including WOC team will of course be there as well.
–•– SK-JS courtship—going on dates—holding hands, smooching, hugging, dancing, laughing etc. (JH will of course be SK's dating couch…yep LOL)
–•– Queen Mother, Secretary and HA's dad will go fishing together (hehe).
–•– The North and South will start a slow but sure journey to bettering both their existences (we'll just use our active imaginations on this one).
–•– Fast forward a few years—We see Ah-Ha's kids (cute as buttons) picking on *ahem, couch, cough* I clearly meant playing with ;) SK-JS kids (equally cute as buttons) in the royal garden—all the grandparents are there sipping tea and talking about how silly JH is for getting jealous just because HA invited Hyun Bin to an upcoming palace party…
–•– Fast forward to the party—HA makes a grand entrance—so breathtaking that JH can't take his eyes off her. He sweeps her off her feet and beehives into one of the palace rooms—they start making out—HA says, "Comrade Lee Jae Ha, where are your manners? We have guests!"
To which JH replies, "I love my country, my people, and yes, I'm even starting to be fond of yours, but above all these, YOU, MY QUEEN ARE MY HEART—I love you HA!!!!!!!!!!" *they start a passionate kiss*
THE END

I don't know if its the same for any of you guys, but I like the fact that Korean Dramas don't shove sex down the viewers throat like other western drama. There are steamy and sexy scenes but they are not over the top and kinda awkward to look at if you are watching it with people other than your close friends.
Plus they give us more room to imagine and let our perverted self out!

Haha, I still remember how, at the start, everyone was groaning about how Bong Gu was a caricature of a villain. Now, it's amazing to see how the scriptwriters have worked in all these little details that make him so layered/complex a character. And those parallels between him and Jae Ha - alternate-reality versions of each other - add so much richness to the characterisation of both.
And it is this sort of thing that makes me so invested in this show. Sometimes the plotlines make me roll my eyes a little, but the characters are so, so finely-written. I love that Jae Ha grows (so much, and so BELIEVABLY) over the episodes, and that it is life's great shapers - love, and loss, and responsibility - that transform a manboy into such a great king (though he already had it in him from the start, which is just another level of awesome). I love that Hang Ah is not just 'badass' but a strong woman - smart, independent, and yet wonderfully emotionally-attuned to others - who deserves respect in all senses of the word (e.g. the way she dealt with Jaeshin just bowled me over). And that she doesn't just devolve into insipidity/weakness the way Gil Ra Im did in the latter half of Secret Garden.
And don't even get me started on Shi Kyung, Jae-shin, Secretary Eun (remember when we thought he might turn out a flop of a character as well? xD), the Queen and Jae-kang. The scriptwriters love their characters, and it really, really shows. There's weakness in each of them, but you also get to see true mettle and spirit.
Another thing that really stood out for me was the maturity with which the relationships are portrayed here. Love in K2H is noble, and built on trust/joint trials/sharing of each other's burdens. I adore that you can actually understand why A loves B, and I adore that this love actually builds people up/makes them better people, the way love should. It doesn't just involve cute bickering or blowing hot/cold the way it does in a lot of dramas (admittedly, Jae HaXHang Ah felt a little like that to me at the start, but those worries have long since been disproven). What's more, the viewers never feel that the non-romantic relationships (leader-subordinate, parent-child, friendship) fade into the background. Always a plus point.
THEN. THE ACTING. So impressed by LSG in this; I haven't watched much of his acting before, so I can't compare, but he IS Jae Ha, down to the subtle nuances like the expression in the eyes/mouth and the body language. And Jo Jung Suk - perfect portrayal of upright, frank idealism. Ha Ji Won, Lee Yoon Ji, Yoon Yeo Jung, Lee Sung Min. What an incredible cast.
And LOL that was a pretty long comment for me but this show inspires ~deep thoughts~ in me, haha.

OMG. I LOVE THIS COMMENT.
I hate it in dramas when the lead guy has no answer to why he loves the lead girl just because "love needs no reason."
BULLSHIT.
You love someone because you can be honest with them. You love someone because when you need to be strong for everyone else, you can just break down and cry on their lap. You love someone because their embrace makes you feel safe and protected. You love someone because they accept your flaws yet still attempt to make you into a stronger person.
And that's exactly why JaeShin loves ShiKyung and JaeHa loves HangAh. <3
Why you gottta be so amazing show?
--btw your name still sucks :D it should have remained as The King. Haha

I love everything you've written here. Fuck, so spot on.
However, I have to say, I've decided I think the title is kind of genius even if it wasn't intended- purely for googling purposes. If I had to wade through everything else in the world titled 'The King', when I really just wanted more stuff on this k-drama, it would have pissed me off. So, for that they get kudos. No other dummy is calling their project "The King 2 Hearts"!

on a side note.... how many of you are watching EM?
watched epi 17th - boy it was the best episode for the entire series so far. if you like a legal drama and shakespeare and hitchcock - this is the episode for you...
( the lead girl is also named Ji Won... rtp is not bad either - except the lead girl is a bit dumb at times and lacking in common sense- inconsistent writing..)
K2H Hang Ah beats out all the leading ladies - its the best written role for a woman.

i feel the same - i skip most of the silly scenes with RTP and EM- i enjoyed the first 4 episodes and they went downhill since. i don't know why they want to prolong EM to 24 episodes. it is going back and forth too many times as if their audience is a bunch of seniles - ooops 'you forgot so lets show the flash back once again ' - every episode it happens---...blah blah blah.
the women's roles here were so poorly written and it is so maddening- i mean i only require common sense... i feel insulted sometimes as an audience...
I will try QIHM later - after K2H is done and after I have debriefed.

Dear LSGLover/Eva,
I am so with you. Not interested in the least in any other dramas, especially the competing ones. Call me small minded. I don't care. I just want to give TK2H my total support and undivided loyalty.
Besides (here are the real reasons, hahaha), I am not interested in the revenge/torture type dramas at all; found most of them very contrite. I watched Women under the Sun (by the same writers I believed), the acting was the only thing that got me through midway before I gave up in disgust by the stupid plot. Time travel theme, if done right, can be very interesting. But, to sustain a 20-episode drama? Very doubtful. I take 49 Days as exhibit number 1 (only because that's the most recent, similar themed drama). I got so bored by the switching back and forth that I dropped that too.
This is my personal opinion and I only say it here, in TK2H thread, so please don't hate me. Each to her own and world peace etc. Let's just enjoy.
(Based on your opinion, maybe I will give QIHM a chance after TK2H ends.)

Jae Ha and Boong Do are, by far, my favorite male leads of all times. Smarts just add so much more to a man's appeal!

i try to find english subbed Strong hearts episodes -
Seungi is a witty host, he is really smart kid--now LSG is (not a kid anymore hehe) to take care of my blood pressure - i blame it on K2H)
I like Strong hearts because i get to know the k stars individually -
I learned so far how hard they all work at perfecting their craft and how the 'idols' take care of their fans.
i can't believe for example - Kang Ho Dong shook hands to 80,000 fans in one day???? (please correct me if i am wrong) that ought to go to the Guinness World Record...
now i understand how the fans can get so protective and so jealous about their idols - i mean they don't approve of their idols dating!!!
ha ha they are in their 30's and they can't date? LOL
---if that happens in hollywood- there would be riots or murder!!!
In a way it is good for the stars/idols - because it protecting them from making wrong decisions - when you are young, you are more impulsive and prone to act rashly!
According to science - age 25, is when people's minds develop judgment.
So Hallyu is doing a good thing. Do you wonder why idol singer do dramas as well? so they can "date" and po po even if its only pretend ---

@slfowie,
I won't categorize K2H as "dark and mysterious", in fact, it is the most realistic drama of all. Rtp is a fantasy and EM is more psychological and legal drama.
While RTP is escapist, EM deals with guilt and revenge issues.
TK2H, on the other hand has all the elements - romance; family ties; international relationships; N & S K divide; a bit James Bond-ish - just look at BG, CLub M and Bonbon as antagonist and JH/HA and SK, WOC as the heroes - ; and
like a spy thriller - kidnapping and escape and rescue and moles etc.
That is why the audience - us here included - can spend hours dissecting and arguing back and forth, and getting into the characters because they are relatable to real life. and the issues are so real - take Club M - i compare it to World bank pr IMFF (who and what is the world bank anyway? who owns it?? where do they get all the money to lend to nations? - who knows ???
In K2H plot, Club M bribed the govt leaders , in this example Sec Eun TAe-Palace/monarchy - and got in the country and --even assasinate their king..
and didn't they give money to china and then use them to hide Hang Ah? etc ...
now there is the International Criminal Court - to prosecute BongGu as a ciminal. this is so real-life .
In reality it is called international human rights commission.
I could go on and on... it is so fascinating. I would like to buy the book if K2H was taken out of a book - anyone know?
I know the TMTETS was based on a book - i would like the english translated book - i think it is better than the drama adaptation - i would have been satisfied had it not been for the acting - left much to be desired altho the youngers selves did a splendid job. --- ooppsiiii go to another forum...

Dark and mysterious as in a drama with something a darkness in it- you have to agree killing off JH, JS's paralysis it is dark.
And I was trying to see why kind of guys the shows would be . But yes among the other show TK1H is the most realistic. Have not watched EM so can't talk about it.

Isn't it amazing that TK2H has all those elements that you've mentioned (and more) yet it never once felt that it was a hodge podge of events? The writing is so seamless that I find myself constantly awed and surprised at the turn of every event. And you're so right when you said that it's the most realistic and relatable drama of all (among the three Wed-Thurs competing shows). It's so grounded in reality that we as viewers just unconsciously find ourselves hopelessly drawn to the characters and their journey.

Okay, so last night I had a nice dream. An online video link was embedded in a thread and we all were watching it live on here while JB (=O Why dream? Its supposed to be GF remember? Aigoo...sorry GF) was doing live recaps.
I expected to dream about Jae Ha/Seung Gi but instead it was more about commenting here. Heh...it really looks like the line has been blurred as someone mentioned. ^^"

It's taking me 4ever to read every comment (which I must do to feed my k2h addiction), so just had to go to the end to speak my mind.
I think the main reason I love k2h is that every character in this drama is so smart or at least the writers are allowing the characters to act logically according to each character's character, so to speak. The female lead esp. is brilliant. I just finished watching ep18 of RTP. I was literally screaming at Bak Ha for being so stupid! The sheer idiocy of some of the heroines in the kdramas I've watched has made me give up on the shows. That's why it is so refreshing to see every female character in k2h acting so intelligently, with very believable dialogue. I applaud the writers and the pd for bringing us such a wonderful drama!

HELL YEAH. I was so disappointed with Rooftop prince--they seem to be tripping around the issue, I mean I was practically screaming: YOU HAVE SO MUCH EVIDENCE JUST CONVICT TAE MU ALREADY. But you're right, I loved that the TK2H characters remained true to themselves, or grew up while retaining what made them them--like Jae Ha's awesome sense of humour.

I like the 3 ducklings in RTP and found the premise cute but have dropped the drama as well - even find it an effort to read the recap. I think the complexity, character development of not just the leads but the secondary ones as well and the well woven together script of TK2H is spoiling me for other dramas!

This is a little bit out of topic, but quite important for me.
The end of the show is inevitably getting closer, what makes me feel sad not only cause we don't get any more of our absolute favorite kdrama but also we won't have any place to deepen out discussion about TK2H - as far as I know at least.
My personal issue is the time factor. The number of all those insightful, funny, thrilling, intelligent, [imagine here about 20 more appropriate adjectives] comments is growing faster than I can catch up with them. I'm simply to slow. But there is so much more I would like to talk about!
Actually I'm a member at InterPals.net. A site created for international friendships and language exchange and in my opinion a good alternative to facebook, which I rather dislike.
It would be fantastic to meet again some of you there! And even more fantastic to become friends with some of you!! :D

Not matter what happens, Hang Ah will be there to save the day ^O^ I have absolute faith in Hang Ah's ability, even though she is totally injured in various places, in saving Jae Ha!!!!
I also have absolute faith in Shi Kyung's loyalty!!!
Both Jae Ha and Shi Kyung must have known Bong gu will know Shi Kyung is here for a reason! And with Jae Ha's IQ187, surely he'd come up with a plan B, or plan A even if this was all part of the plan (send Shi Kyung to Bong gu, knowing Bong gu will know this plan, and then devise a further plan from there)
This drama is SO exciting!!!!!!! I wonder how it's gonna end!!!!!

I still wonder to what Shi Kyung's undercover mission makes him. A double double agent, a triple or even quadruple agent (as GF hilariously named it ^^)??
Anyway ...
Katie, I utterly share your faith into Shi Kyung! That man IS the embodied loyalty to Jae Ha. And whatever plan they have - be that plan E - with Shi Kyung's loyalty and Jae Ha's high IQ they will find a way out of this s(h)ituation. Also Hang Ah is following her female instincts and heading toward them. Yay!
The only remaining question: will there be more casualties? A scary question. >.<
Poor Shi Kyung was resembling a walking dead last.
But no!! What I'm saying? 0.0 Let's drop out "dead" and keep on "walking"!!!

I watched again the part where Hang Ah shoots her way out of the underground holdup. When she turns and sees a guy chasing after her and the queen mother, she takes a step FORWARD, toward the guy, shoots, then another step FORWARD, shoots again and the guy just crumbles.
Oh my god, HJW's aura, totally killer, totally fearless, you almost feel some sympathy for her enemy. Just don't mess with this woman, will you? For your own sake!

Yes, I caught that too. Man, this woman is BRAVE! I thought. No taking cover for her but a single-mindedness in her determination to kill her her enemy and escape. Like you said, totally fearless.
Then when you watch the scene when she breaks down in front of her dad & JH, you can't help but just realize how mentally strong she was there and at every scene she had with BG , how she had pulled herself together and not allowed herself to give in to her intense fear of BG. The way she stood up to him, BG would never have known how much he actually terrified her.

For me, the kicker in this episode was the bromance--especially when Shi Kyung was telling JS that he was him, and his father was his father. And told his father the same thing--it said so much for their bromance! Totally loved it, and him.
And when Jae Ha and Hang Ah met--JH's face when he thought she was dead. There are just too many awesome scenes-- but I guess I should include Secretary Eun's apology to the queen mother--it broke my heart. TK2H never disappoints!
Btw, Seungri's acting! I'm breaking out the champagne, he just keeps getting better! Loved it, and thanks for the recap!

I thought last episode was daebak and then the writers gave us ep 18.
Just some observations:
1. I was surprised when Hang Ah did not make use of the strategically placed coat hooks (nails really) in her cell. The moment I saw them I thought which idiot would put a row of half-driven nails in a prison cell? They are just asking to be punctured.
2. Did anyone else think The King's Speech when Jae Ha was preparing to go into the press conference? Really? I'm the only idiot?
3. When Shi Kyung made the comment about John Mayo looking at things from his eye level, I thought that would be gross because the man is so small, that will mean he's going around staring at peoples' crotches. Eeeuwww.
4. John Mayo should be getting used to being hung up on. First Shi Kyung and now the Chinese official. Let's all call him and then hang up.

@Duncerblur,
Regarding The King's Speech, yes, the atmosphere was similarly tense and fitting for a king. But Colin Firth's king is really miles away from LSG's Jae Ha, in terms of confidence, conviction, and youthful charisma. Don't get me wrong. Both actors did an excellent job, but their roles have very different personalities.
Love your observation about Bong Gu's being hung up. Yes, I enjoy his incredulous expression very much. He's like, what, you dare hang up on me?! Duh, yeah, so what you gonna do? Write "I am King" on the window again?

Hey Ann, yes I was comparing the atmosphere of both scenes and not the characters. Good grief, the two Kings could not be more different and although I know many will disagree, LSG has a way to go before he is of Colin Firth's league. Not to say he is crap. On the contrary, I am amazed at how much he has improved since MGIAG and Brilliant Legacy. Especially considering he is not an actor by traning but a singer. This is truly a breakthrough role for him.
And yes, I am biased because I have a wee bit of a crush on Colin Firth. *Blush*
Re John Mayo, he's have to get his minions to stop cleaning the windows first so he can do his scribing. I don't know why but every time I think of him writing I Am King, I start sing Singh is King, Singh is King ...

Dunceblur,
I have not seen Colin Firth's king or whatever movie- but to make comparisons - it has to be based on a similar standard: in this case Colin has a huge advantage- he has acted longer and he is primarily an actor - so he is way ahead - if it is a race - he started a kilometer ahead.
Seungi on the other hand is an Idol - meaning an entertainer , singer, emcee, ads model, tv all around entertainer and a rookie idol actor - he has done only 2 dramas so far.
Lee Seung Gi is only 25 years old. He is just starting- as it were.
In another ten years - when Seunggi matches Colin Firth's experience - then we can compare apples to apples.
But the way I see it - LSG is running leaps and bounds- almost flying...
In fairness, Lee Seung gi did an excellent portrayal of Jae Ha character- I could not find fault in LSG 's acting here. Seunggi matched the senior actors head to head in their scenes.
LSG should be given an award for his portrayal of Jae Ha. LSG IS Lee Jae Ha as someone here pointed out. Jae Ha is forever imprinted in my mind as a character. That is powerful!
I cannot remember a drama or a movie character that impacted me this way .....wracking my brain...

By the way, I love how the writers have turned Hang Ah's 'Lee Jae Ha Dongji" (Comrade Lee Jae Ha) into an endearment that is so appropriate and unique to them. Gah, I just love them.
*if anyone is wondering why Hang Ah doesn't just call him Jae Ha, or Jae Ha-yah (as Jae Ha calls Hang Ah), I imagine because it would be fucking weird. He's still the King, and even as his fiancé she wouldn't be comfortable being that casual. You'll notice in real life Korean couples and husbands/wives also sort of adhere to this. These days you notice especially with younger couples that wives will still call their husbands "Oppa". Otherwise terms like 'yeobo' ('honey' for married couples), 'manura' (wife) 'nampyeon' (husband) are used, and when they become parents they often call each other by their first child's name. So if their first child's name is John, they'll call each other 'John omma', 'John appa'. I'm not an expert or anything- I could be grossly wrong, this is just stuff I've noticed growing up in a Korean family.
Sorry, I didn't mean this comment to be so long. Just wanted to reiterate that I like how the writers have gotten over that intimacy hurdle by providing 'Lee Jae Ha Dongji', an endearment that is uniquely Hang Ah's.

Normally I would complain that it's so formal, but when she called from the prison and the first words she said was "Lee JaeHa Dongji" I melted inside.
I totally agree with you. Dongji is better than "Jeonha" or "Yeobo"
"Dongji" makes them equals in the relationship and that's the one thing I respect most between in this drama. <3

In addition to endearment, I googled the term "comrade" and here's what I found in wikipedia:
In Chinese, the translation of comrade is "同志" (pinyin: tóng zhì), literally meaning "(people with) the same spirit, goal, ambition, etc."
In Korean, a good equivalent of the word would be "동무" (tongmu) or "동지" (tongji, senior comrade). Although the word was originally used by Korean people all over the Korean Peninsula, people living south of the 38th Parallel began avoiding using the word after a communist state was set up in the north. In North Korea, the word tongmu replaced all prior social titles and earned a new meaning as "a fellow man fighting for the revolution". The word originally meant "friend".
The writers of this drama and hearties here in DB never stop to amuse me with their intelligence. Even that term "comrade" has a special meaning "a fellow man fighting for the revolution" and in this drama Hang Ah and Jae Ha comrade for me meant that they are "fighting for reunification" ~ two hearts one soul :D

You know, I was just having a conversation about this on tumblr. I'll somewhat repeat what I said there...
I agree with you that it feels as if Hang Ah is expressing affection in a way that is unique to her. Even though she is in love with Jae Ha, she doesn’t stop being a soldier at heart. I like that she uses 'Comrade' instead of something else. It reminds me that Hang Ah and Jae Ha are not only lovers but are also partners/comrades-in-arms who fight together.
Remember back when Hang Ah and Jae Ha first met and he kept getting incredibly angry whenever she called him ‘Comrade?’ I see her free use of the word now as partly an evolution of their relationship where the term has become affectionate for him instead of antagonizing.
You know…thinking about it now, Hang Ah uses ‘Comrade’ in direct contrast to calling him ‘Your Majesty’ doesn’t she? I remember Jae Ha doesn’t like her to call him that. (Though that was probably the grief over his brother and/or his personal resistance to be king since he said it to her right after the murder.)
Plus, there was another scene in episode 9 when Hang Ah felt it was hard to be formal and proper so she asked Jae Ha if she could call him ‘Comrade’ instead of ‘Your Majesty’ even if only in private.
I feel Hang Ah is actually really open and expressive of her love. Far more so than Jae Ha in some ways, especially at the beginning there. She boldly confesses to him, she makes herself vulnerable to him at every turn, the way she opened up about their relationship on national television, the way she scolded him about the kind of man she wants, the way she trusts in him to have planted the bombs correctly in the WOC, or the way she cradles him in her arms when he’s crying or afraid…Her term of address doesn’t take away from any of that, I think. It just expresses that their relationship is much more complex than as simple lovers.
PS. I like that this couple turns things that aren’t really affectionate into something loving. Like Jae Ha using beauty products as an apology and his entire proposal about stalking her and loving her for revenge. lmao

Excellent comment. Beautifully put, about JH and HA's relationship.
I feel that since the "disgust" and great disappointment he experienced with his first love, the only-or rather the best-way to open his heart again to trust love was the kind of love Hang Ah offered. She dared to open herself to him, showing her vulnerability, having an innocence and honesty about her that he hungered for (though didn't know it at the time), and after hurting her several times he realized (an "ah ha" moment!) she was for real, that he loved her and that he would be a fool to lose her.
I have loved witnessing how much they've grown as a couple. They are so in sync with each other. It's a joy to watch.

@Jenlikeskettlecorn & ravens_nest:
Thank you so much for raising this topic and your wonderful insights.
HA's term of endearment for JH used in this particular episode when she called him on his cellphone and when she called out for him from her prison cell was a little jarring for me. Somehow, when she used it previously, I always felt it was appropriate. At times, it was used affectionately as a reminder of their early days and the context of how they got to meet, eg. The scene when she asks if she may use a less formal address when no one's around. At other times, she used it with a tone of admonishment, eg. When he ordered her to go back to NK & during the WOC.
But when a girl is desperate and frantic, I would assume she would just cut to the chase. I thought using 'Jae-ha' or if that is too banmal

'Lee Jae-ha' would suffice. I get one needs to really know Korean etiquette or use of language to truly appreciate 'Lee Jae-ha dongji'.

@Jenlikeskettlecorn,
This is so interesting. First about calling your dearest "titles" or general terms such as yeobo instead of their names, yes, Koreans are very conservative in that regard. And I would think the less open North would be especially so. Jae Ha is a king, so that only makes things more complicated.
And I agree "comrade" has become an endearment for Hang Ah. It brings back the setting and memories of their first encounter and how they started to know each other. It also emphasizes that they are in this grand mission together. The mission of a man and woman's union, the divided countries' unification, the good overcoming the evil. I notice there's always a little jolt in Jae Ha when Hang Ah calls him that. It's like a reminder to him too. So clever.

Can I point to you guys the brilliance of the writing and production team of K2H? I went back to watch the scene in ep 10 whee Bong Gu revealed to Ja Ha that he killed the late king, just to catch the scenes that corresponded with the video evidence.
If you go back and watch it again, u will find that, when Sec Eun asked Bong Gu to leave, u can see the password screen very very faintly in the background (tell tale violet light that emits from the password screen).
and, now knowing that the password "Are you happy?"was set way back in ep 8... wow! u'll realise that the writers have already weaved this twist in ep 18 way before when writing ep 8! and the production team looked into such details.
really brilliant!!

(= enjoy @luvs! and i keep having to remind myself that this whole drama was shot with Canon DSLR cameras, and u can notice that in the camera work (close ups, zooms, etc) and quality.... =) I think it may have been less intrusive (in a way) for the actors...?except for one boo-boo that someone on the soompi forum pointed out in ep 17 (and Hang Ah'smoveable scar, that was highlighted above) i really feel that production quality wise, they've really reached a new level with K2H. Cracktastic!

@bern-
yeah saw that too , twice at least the scar kept switching left then right cheek...
Also (at 34 minute mark epi 18th) when the doctor came to treat Hang Ahs wound in her left arm, the bullet scar looked like a straight line - like a knife wound instead of gunshot wound?
if it was a gunshot should it look roundish?
--- a very minor detail... it's in the editing room problem.
which is really a minor detail, besides this is a drama - in a movie this would be glaring...
I am impressed too with the slick production - they must have a huge budget for this - they are on different locations too.
on a different topic...
I noticed that they build-in the advertising products in the scenes -(for example Jae Ha eating dunking donuts )--contrast to hollywood style - where they do not display noticeable product brands in the scenes.
I do not have access to Korean TV - but from the episode I saw live on ionair - there was a 6-minute ads at the start and then the drama showed without advertising from start to finish.
In N America, advertising is interspered during the show so that a one-hour show is actually 30 minutes and the rest advertising .

"there was a 6-minute ads at the start and then the drama showed without advertising from start to finish."
Yeah, that surprised me when I watched it live for the first time too. Must say its so much better to watch it without interruptions so that there's no break in momentum and viewers' emotions.
That's why there's so much product placements too as that's how advertisers can get the biggest bang for their $ given that there's no guarantee viewers will tune in before and after the show to catch their advertisements.

I already thought that the focusing reminds me to my DSLR, but I never thought it would be used in a drama like this. 0.0

Because of curiosity, I rewatched the scene of Hang Ah's wounds and scars' appearing and disappearing. I noticed that she actually has 2 scars both on the left and right cheek. The scar on her right cheek is from the wound she got after the video conference with Jae Ha. It is straight. The scar on her right cheek is a bit more obvious. She got that after falling in the mountain filled with so many leaves. I'm not sure but that's what I noticed.

I, too, wondered about the voice recognition bit. Because I remember that Eun Skunkretary told Jae Ha, when he first inherited the system, that the recording was activated to respond only to the current King.
The alternative is to consider that John Mayo's voice resembles Jae Ha and that is such a creepy thought. And totally bogus. Can you imagine him trying to sing one of LSG's songs? I think my eyeballs just popped out of my head ...

ok i am in sleuth mode - went back to check Ep 8 re password voice recognition. Sec Eun told Jae Ha that he must choose the starting and ending passwords wisely as they represent who he is as a king.
nothing about voice recognition. so i guess it could have been activated by anyone...
bern 75
May 19, 2012 at 7:34 AM
@luvs - it's around the 38th min actually, when u see the password screen. this is right after Jae Ha storms out of the room, Sec Eun comes in to a fuming Bong Gu and told him "You should leave". Then the toupe minion comes in and they exit.... u can see the violet lighted screen at the background, close to Sec Eun's face.
@Chethaera - i read it somewhere that the whole drama was shot with Canon DSLR (can't recall which site), and the boo-boo in ep 17 proved it: see 52nd min, right corner near (Jae Ha's left ear, DSLR lens popping out of the screen for 1 split second).
i'm not the sharp-eyed kind, so can't claim credit for spotting the boo-boo (it was someone on soompi forum). I didn't even notice the boo-boo about Hang Ah's moving scar, cos i'm so absorbed in the story... :)
happy spotting!

@ luvs,
"Someone actually pointed out the password spoken and that it will be important later on… absolutely right…"
It's GF who said that herself in her recap at Ep8.
To me, it was most creative writing ever because we were given heads up and yet it still happened right under ours (and Jae Ha's) nose. Why ? Had it been conventional drama, with less imaginative writers, it would likely be activated by Jae Ha himself, probably in a surprise attack by BG. At least that was what I had imagined and was watching out for it since Ep8.
Which goes to prove again how brilliant this drama is.

about the voice recognition.....I don't think it matters who says the password. JH spent all that time trying to crack his brother's password and when he did (using the correct words/clap in his own voice), the video log opened up.

I wondered about the voice recognition bit way back when JH was trying to access JK's records. I guess it has to work this way otherwise future kings would never be able to retrieve past kings' entries and that would kinda defeat the purpose of having logs to begin with, isn't it?

It's wonderful how the production team design very detail...and when we trace back...it's a match! So the idea had prepared long way before, not just an addition!
I want to add one more, During video call, the time between each opposite screen always match. I usually laugh at this trivial thing but their effort amaze me! :D

Thank you GF for the recap --> I just love your comment at the end and it summarised beautifully what I'm thinking but cannot expressed well in my own words.
I feel like I'm having a full course meal just by reading all these comments. I'm getting full but I don't want to stop reading these thoughtful comments because they allow me to do some reflections on my own terms.
After this drama ends I think I'm going to go down memory lane and reflect why I love this drama so much. In comparison to other kdramas I think this one stands on par with a lot of US dramas that I love, because it's so different and unique.
1) I love this drama portrays two very realistic and mature couple falling in love without losing their character and personality. At the end of the day Hang Ah is still the kick-ass Hang Ah we know(with a feminine touch) and Jae Ha is Jae Ha. Moreover, it's the Jae Ha without the mask, the brilliant and super smart King we're so proud of.
2) Most kdramas deal with character development of the protagonist in the story and yet K2H has shown an excellent character development storyline on Jae Ha that is steady and again, realistic because he's imperfect and flawed just like everyone else. We come to understand Jae Ha's immaturity, grief, fear of trusting people, fear of falling in love, loving Hang Ah and being the King necessary to rule the country. It's like seeing him being snobby, acting stupidly, falls, tumbles, getting back up, fighting back, declaring love, showing Kingly materials that is so rewarding and make us feel so proud of him at the end of the day. We cry with him, we get scared of him – it’s all there.
3) The setting of the entire story of K2H is believable. Kudos to the writers for bringing in a fictional monarchy that incorporates real conflicts between NK and SK, and international conflicts that make me actually care. If this drama does this fictional thing differently I would have tuned out completely. In particular, I LOVE the ICC stuff and it's so clever that the writers can think of this and decide to go for this route rather than some simple resolution that even normal viewers can think of lol. It really makes you feel Kim Bong Gu is really an international monster that needs to be taken down for every country to be free from control and manipulation. It's a simple good vs evil story, but with an international dimension to it that has an impact on a global scale. And it is a fictional plot that is solid and excellently written.
4) Side-characters --> I love every single side characters in this story and the fact that each of them have a significant stake on our main characters. After watching ep 17 and 18 I just realised that the WOC are not just a side-story purely for the sake of the WOC + development for Jae Ha and Hang Ha relationship. I’m just amazed how even Dong Ah and Young Bae managed to come into the latter half of the story (even after the end of WOC) and helped Jae Ha rescue Hang Ah and Queen Mother. If these people were not people we know from WOC, it’s harder for viewers to connect with the story as well as what they did here. Did you just see the fear on Young Bae’s face when they were searching for Hang Ah in the prison? It’s like he’s really worried not because she’s a superior but she’s also someone they went through training and hardship together. With Dong Ah, look at how worried he was about Shi Kyung when he was letting himself be captured. It’s these little things that get to me and I just can’t help thinking what the story is like without them.
What I love about the side characters is that they are almost given the same weight as the protagonists in the story. They each play a significant part in the story and we care for them as much as we care for Jae Ha and Hang Ah. In particular for Queen Mother, who would have thought she can be kick-ass like Hang Ah in her frail appearance. For the baddies –you can tell how much Kim Bong Gu envies Jae Ha and his ‘people’. Like GF says, he really wants to have a piece of Jae Ha’s toy because he has everything, except ‘people’ like Shi Kyung. He killed off his father, right hand man, his girlfriend, slapped Bon Bon – he basically has no one around to help him and you can see his desperation that he has no one to ‘use’ when Jae Ha declared war on him. That, cleverly, is also a weakness that can become Jae Ha and Shi Kyung’s advantage and lead to the demise of Club M.
OMG I AM VERY SORRY for this long post – it’s just this drama is just so damn good I can’t help but rant on about it.

This is what I love about this drama too. They don't just focus on the leads, but everyone plays a part and have been given a share of he limelight. It's such a heartwarming drama - and emphases the theme of love and people.

Exactly! I loooove the WOC team and their brotherhood and friendship (have yet to get used to using "bromance"). One of my absolute favorite scenes is beginning of ep 5 at the celebration following the WOC training when four of the team are exchanging gifts. Arirang is playing in the background. Tough guy Kang Seok just got a poster of his beloved girl group from cute Dong Ha "just to write his address." Young Bae is crying about the thoughtful gift Shi Kyung gave him and lovingly gives him Pong Pong, a rare NK treat. They exchange hats at Young Bae's (bashful) request, and the four have a picture taken of them. Arirang ends as you see the frozen image of these four comrades.
Love them! Love how they come back later to show their combat skills and aid in the rescue efforts of our main characters.

I'll accept this as a second recap - very well articulated. Thanks you for mentioning Dong Ah - I noticed and felt all of those too. He is the third wheel here after JH and SK along with 'i swallowed the key' guy , and Kang Sheok -- -
hold on , just now, i have this sudden image of - Jae Ha, SK, Dong, Key,Kang as an Idol group called -" K2H" or "WOC " singing and dancing - LOL--

To avoid nail biting while waiting for new episodes I kept my (shaking) fingers busy. Even when I'm not satisfied with the result cause I failed at the proportions. Ugh ...
May be you like it anyway.

Wow! This is the first time I don't mind being on stationary bike for longer than 30 mins!!! Time flew while I was reading the recaps and I'm not even done with all of them. Now I know what to do while working out on this boring bike...I wouldn't try running on the threadmill though because I read somewhere here that she almost fell from laughing while reading the comments. Two birds in one stone - working out and getting caught up on this thread nyahahaha! ??

Keep working out, girlfriend. Maybe one day we'll look like our Queen-to-be too!

I've been reading GF recaps on K2H for previous episodes, just to kill time. And I encounter this from episode 3 recap (the scene when they were playing war dummy in WOC training after Jae Ha sent away UN reps)
"Still fixated on his own awesomeness, he asks Shi-kyung what he thought of the UN outburst. He just gets a silent thumbs-up, and Jae-ha gripes that he’s always too cool for school. Hidden out of view, Shi-kyung smiles to himself. Aw, you are so gonna be besties someday."
What a prophecy GF! Well, not only these two are besties, JH is SK wing man! heeeeee. :D

aww, u read my mind! i was actually tried to distract myself from thinking about K2H sometime in ep 9-10 (u know, the miscarriage et al) so i tried to marathon HIMYM. But I ended up saying, why most of the episodes are empty (if u know what i mean)
Ah, comparing kdrama and hollywood sitcoms.. i guess K2H wins zillions time!
but yeah, JH and SK are way better in morale sense. :P

This drama makes me a weirdo. I enjoy every heart attacks it gave me in every episode. I enjoy every pressure of my blood which is playing in my body. Sometimes it's high, sometimes it's low. I always can't wait to watch this drama and feel those sensations again; heart attack and up-and-down blood pressure.
Waiting for the new episode makes me an idiot. I only think about this drama, and my brain is full of my own scenarios for the upcoming episode. Everyone should call me at least twice before I answer their calling.
Give me Wednesday ASAP,or I might go crazy!
