The King 2 Hearts: Episode 18

I love a drama that deepens the conflict as we go. So many shows will spin their wheels in the final stretch to just prolong the inevitable, but here we launch into a whole new conflict, as the final battle begins to unfold. And I swear, it feels like a reward just for me, but bromance takes center stage, and it is awesome.

EPISODE 18 RECAP

Hang-ah stumbles into a building to ask the couple inside if she can make one international phone call. The man inside eyes her warily, noting her accent and her bloody arm, and tells her to wait. He goes in the back, while his wife pours her a cup of tea.

Grateful, Hang-ah takes off her watch and puts it on the table. The woman gives it back, and then warns, “Run away, now! Hurry!” But it’s too late – as soon as she stands up to go, police officers march in to arrest her. Damnit.

She gets hauled off to be investigated as a North Korean fugitive, and when she gives her name, the guy just laughs, “The Kim Hang-ah who’s engaged to the king of South Korea? Yeah right.” HA. There is a certain irony to fame working against you.

The guy in charge gets a call from Bong-gu, who assures them that they should by all means follow their protocol… but there’s nothing to stop them from, say, detaining her a little longer, is there?

He reminds them that he didn’t not kill Hang-ah because he was afraid of them, but because she’s such a good pawn in the North-South game. Oh, ’cause I thought you couldn’t kill her because she escaped from your cookie fortress.

Hang-ah rattles the cage in her jail cell, asking when she’ll get to see a doctor for her arm. The guard tells her she’ll be transferred in a week, and the doctor will treat her then. A week? For a bullet wound? Though she’s more concerned about where she’ll be transferred to than anything.

Despite the injured arm, she spends her time working out like the badass soldier that she is, always preparing for her escape.

She finally sits down to rest, a wave of despair about to hit her, but suddenly Jae-ha’s hand appears on her shoulder. With her bruised and battered hand, she reaches out to touch it.

She looks up and suddenly he’s there, sitting right beside her, his arm around her shoulders. He smiles and she looks up at him with tear-filled eyes.

He wraps both arms around her tightly, and she closes her eyes. They sit like that for just a moment, and then he fades, leaving her sitting there with her hand on her own shoulder.

Man, it’s that moment he fades that really stabs you in the heart. Beautifully played. I like this vision even more than his a few episodes back, because it’s wordless but delivers a stronger impact.

She opens her eyes to find him gone. A tear falls, and she holds her hand to her heart as she sinks back.

Meanwhile, Jae-ha pursues his plan of attack: prosecuting Bong-gu in the International Criminal Court.

Secretary Eun heads out to his fishing spot and stops in his tracks to see Shi-kyung waiting there for him. He stands there with a smile on his face. It’s enough for Dad to know how he feels.

I’m glad Shi-kyung isn’t totally broken, but the reconciliation does come too fast for me—you were just sobbing in the pouring rain, remember? These are all things I want for them, but paced waaay way slower.

They sit down and Shi-kyung says that he always found Dad difficult. He knew what Dad wanted of him, but also that he could never deliver on those expectations. So he was always scared of him.

He says that’s probably why he screamed at him—to make up for all the complexes Dad gave him. “But I’m happy now. I think I can finally be independent of you.” Good for you.

He tells Dad not to think that anything he does is because of him. He repeats Jae-ha’s words: “You’re you, and I’m me.” So no matter what he does, it’s his choice. Hm, that sounds like dangerous martyr talk to me. Don’t you go doing anything stupid, ya hear me?

They have a nice father-son bonding moment over fish, or lack thereof, and laugh and smile together.

But then Dong-ha bursts into Jae-ha’s meeting to warn him that Shi-kyung is trying to go to China anyway. Drat. I KNEW you were being too smiley for a regular day! He gets yelled at by his commanding officer, and just replies, “I haven’t once taken vacation days, so I’m just going to use them.” Ha. Did you really think that would work??

It doesn’t, so then he takes out his resignation letter. What? You’re quitting to go be a hero? Dong-ha tries to stop him as he packs up his things, but his mind’s made up. Dong-ha sighs, “You can’t leave the country anyway.”

OH. SNAP. Did Jae-ha put you on a no-fly list? HAHAHA.

He storms into Jae-ha’s office yelling, but the secretary tells him no one’s allowed inside. He can only talk from outside the door. Hee.

Shi-kyung says that they have to do this to make sure Bong-gu appears in the International Criminal Court, otherwise mounting a case against him does no good. Jae-ha counters that he has plenty of super secret spies he can send in to do that job.

But Shi-kyung asks what happens when Bong-gu kills all those agents. Bong-gu knows that Shi-kyung is Jae-ha’s right-hand man. That means that for the sake of driving Jae-ha crazy, he’ll keep Shi-kyung by his side. Damnit, stop making sense!

He yells, “Why can’t I go? Because I’m your friend? If it’s that then don’t worry. I have never once thought of you as a friend!”

W-wu-wuh? Nooooooo! We survived this long without noble idiots in this drama, and now you’re telling me the bromance is going there? Take it back! You ARE FRIENDS! You are! You… are… *whimper.*

He pleads with Jae-ha to be stronger than this. He turns to go, but then suddenly he swivels back, grim with determination. He yells, “Lee Jae-ha!” OMG. Did you just call the king by name? In banmal?

“Go ahead and spend the rest of your life in there, looking for friends! Because Kim Hang-ah is gone, you’re scared of losing me too, aren’t you? I’ve long let go of my guilt. So GET IT TOGETHER!”

That was so awesome. That gets Jae-ha out of the room right quick. He fumes, “Lee? Jae? Ha?

Shi-kyung: “You said we were friends.” HEE. I love Quippy Comeback Bot best of all. Jae-ha roars, calling him a bastard.

But then Shi-kyung just stares with his super earnest puppy eyes, and Jae-ha caves with a sigh. Perhaps this is why you weren’t allowed in the room in the first place. I love that this part of the exchange needs no words.

Shi-kyung promises (now back to formal speech), “I will return.” Jae-ha lets out a shaky sigh. I’m not even going to warn you that you’d better return, because there’s no option to do otherwise. You WILL return, gorramit.

Bromantic study montage time. They plan their mission, down to the letter, complete with A SECRET CODE. Is there a secret handshake to go with? Sometimes I really love this drama.

Jae-ha asks Shi-kyung to do one last thing before leaving—go see Jae-shin. “You know the condition she’s in. And you know her heart. No matter how frustrating you are, if you don’t know that…”

Shi-kyung: “Can I do whatever I want?” Rawr?

Jae-ha: “You mean you haven’t, till now?” Dude, you don’t even know the half of it. Shi-kyung asks if he really can, just once, treat her not as the princess but meet her person-to-person. Jae-ha corrects him: “It’s man-to-woman.”

Shi-kyung: “Can I, just this once, follow my heart, and see her?” Jae-ha doesn’t answer, and instead turns around and picks up the phone. He orders that Jae-shin be brought out to the garden, and no one allowed within two kilometers of her, “…except Eun Shi-kyung.”

Wingman for the win. He turns around, “Will that do?” Shi-kyung starts hyperventilating now that he has no excuses left.

Jae-shin gets brought outside and then they take her wheelchair away, leaving her with nothing but a picnic basket. She wonders what’s going on, and then Shi-kyung comes up the road to meet her.

She asks if he knows about the memory she recovered, “It’s like a monster, isn’t it?” She starts to cry. But he tells her that the person who gave away the Anmyundo location was his father, and he’s decided that he’s not going to let himself feel guilty about that. “Because my father is my father, and I’m me.”

He kneels down in front of her. “It’s the same for you. It was because of them. It wasn’t your fault.” He takes her hand and tells her that recovering the memory alone makes her impressive.

He says it again, “It’s not your fault.” He holds her hand as she sobs.

Then a little while later, he piggybacks her through the garden, as he tells her that he’s taking a short vacation. He says that he’ll give her some homework, and once she completes it, he’ll have returned.

“Say It’s not my fault a hundred times a day.” Aw. She tells him that he has to do the same then. They both agree. “Laugh three times a day, even if you have to force it.” He adds going to therapy diligently and practicing being in front of people, and she agrees.

They reach her wheelchair and he puts her back in it. Still kneeling, he adds one last thing: “Sing again.” She kisses him on the cheek, startling him, and asks what else.

He stands up to give his answer, and plants a kiss on her.

But his own impulsive move sends him reeling, and he steps away from her, more in shock than she is. Heh. He quickly apologizes, and she asks what for, but he feels so awkward that he just gets behind her and speed-wheels her back to the palace. Pfft. What happened to the gutsy guy who told her oppa that he was gonna do whatever he wanted? Cracks me up.

And then he berates himself in his office for losing control. That was you, losing control? Whoa there, wild child. He thinks of something and decides to write a letter. I will admit, I hope it’s to Jae-ha, but it’s probably for Jae-shin.

Secretary Eun sits at his fishing spot and this time an entire royal entourage arrives. It’s Jae-ha. He tells ajusshi about what Shi-kyung did, and starts to say that he tried to stop him, but corrects himself: “No, I sent him.”

He says he pretended to put up a fight because sending him freely made him such a bad person. But Secretary Eun sees right through the guilt parade. Jae-ha says that there’s so much to prepare for the case, and asks him to return to the palace: “Like you did for hyung, come be by my side.”

Secretary Eun looks over at him, moved and startled. Jae-ha warns that the pay will be downgraded though—times are tough. Heh. They smile, and then ajusshi says he has to seek forgiveness from one person first.

He goes to see the queen mother, to confess his wrongdoing. She already knows, but I think it’s important that he says it and seeks forgiveness. She just asks with tears in her eyes about how Jae-kang was that day, since Secretary Eun is the last person to see him alive.

He tells her that the king was happy and smiling, and she says that’s enough for her.

The good guys get a break and finally recover the video player from Jae-ha’s hostage standoff in North Korea, but it’s too damaged to recover any data. Drat.

Jae-ha sighs and turns to hyung’s portrait, “You happy?” He’s just talking, but that phrase is the one that opens up his diary recorder, which he ignores. But then suddenly, something dawns on him. Aww, yeah.

He looks up at the portrait, and then over to the table and chairs sitting across the room, and then back at the recorder. Nice. I KNEW it would come in handy that his keyword was so conversational.

The music swells. He calls Shi-kyung. Mission is on. He walks down the memorial hall and into the pressroom to make his live public announcement. The world tunes in, and so does Bong-gu.

Jae-ha announces that the late king’s death was murder, and he has the proof. He plays the video. Hell yeah. It’s a top-angle view (because it’s aimed at the desk, if you remember Jae-kang’s footage from before) but it captures both Jae-ha and Bong-gu sitting across from each other that day that he confessed to the murder.

Backtrack to that day, when Bong-gu himself had said the phrase, “You happy?” which started the recording that neither of them noticed. The reporters and the public watch, horrified, as Bong-gu lays it all out on the video—that the real reason he killed Jae-kang was because he kept him out of the country, and sent him peacefully like a drunk idiot.

He makes that shudder-inducing quueck noise, and everyone who’s watching jumps out of their skin. Man, this is so awesome. And strangely even more horrifying out of context—he just seems like a pure monster. One of the reporters asks the man’s identity, and Jae-ah confirms it. Bong-gu sits frozen in his chair.

Jae-ha: “A king is not just a king. He is South Korea itself, and its 50 million people. Club M’s John Mayer murdered those 50 million people.” And with his game face on, he declares that he’ll be prosecuting him according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. (Specifically used to prosecute crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes, etc.)

Cut to Secretary Eun delivering their case to the court. Jae-ha continues: “We will fight. And we will capture him. We will uphold justice, and make him face the strict judgment of the law.”

Gah, goosebumps. I love a hero who fights within the system. Renegades are cool, but a king IS the system, and if he doesn’t have faith in that, his position is meaningless.

Needless to say, Bong-gu starts to panic, though he does his best not to show it. He tells his minion that it’s time to lay low, and orders him to call the prison and have Hang-ah moved.

But instead of doing that, Minion calls someone else in Club M to say that Bong-gu is now a liability. He orders a hit on Bong-gu… which Bong-gu overhears. I wish I could say that I’m surprised and shocked that you’d be betrayed by your own people, but who’re we kidding. Most of us were wondering how he lasted that long. Mia walks into the room, and minion starts crying instantly. Ha.

Shi-kyung and Dong-ha are hiding outside the compound, and Dong-ha worries about the plan, but Shi-kyung tells him to just do as he said, and pets him on the head before going in. Aw.

By the time we get back to Bong-gu, his minion’s already a dead fish. Shots ring out and they scramble, and Shi-kyung sneaks his way in. He gets into a fight with Mia, and I want him to kick her ass, but sigh, that’s not the plan, and he lets himself be captured.

She hauls onto his knees in front of Bong-gu and trains a gun to his head. Shi-kyung just tells him to kill him and get it over with. But Bong-gu thinks back to Shi-kyung’s initial rejection of rotten cookies, looks over at dead fish backstabber, and orders them to treat him well.

Shi-kyung hides his reaction, and Dong-ha watches him get hauled away from afar, crying. Aw. He calls Jae-ha to tell him that phase one is complete. Jae-ha hangs his head with a heavy sigh.

And then begins the horrible torture. They knew this going in—Jae-ha told him that he’d have to endure for an unbearably long time, otherwise giving in too quickly would seem false. I know they’re right, but aaauuuugh. They lay him on the ground and she threads a stick through his fingers, and then GRINDS his hand till his fingers break under her heel. Oof.

Hang-ah finally gets treated by a doctor in the prison. She winces from the pain, but he says it’s already healed over, so she’s overreacting. But of course it’s just a diversion…

While he turns his head to speak to the guards, she grabs him in a headlock and screams at the guards to step back. They panic and she orders the doctor to hand over his cell phone.

Jae-ha sits with Secretary Eun discussing the trial and IF YOU IGNORE THIS CALL I WILL KICK YOU IN THE NUTS. Thankfully, he answers. Hang-ah yells frantically into the phone, “Comrade Lee Jae-ha!”

She barely has time to tell him that she’s in a Chinese prison before an armed guard comes running in. He fires a shot into the air, and she drops the phone. He’s left screaming her name, not knowing if she’s dead or alive.

He tells Secretary Eun that he’s going to China right now. They rush to try and move her before the king arrives. He comes with troops both North and South (Dong-ha and Young-bae are both present).

He tells the prison’s commanding officer that a call from his fiancée originated here, and sends his men in to look for her. They search frantically, Young-bae especially falling all over the place, desperate to find Hang-ah in time.

They call out her name over and over, and then she finally hears it faintly. The guards have her somewhere removed, held at gunpoint, but she fights them off long enough to scream for Jae-ha.

He hears her, and takes off running toward the building off to the side. The agents follow. At the same time, the guards gag her and start to move her out, on the upper level.

They nearly miss each other, but then Hang-ah sees Jae-ha from behind, below her. She screams through her gag, and he hears her and comes running, and they finally lock eyes.

But they’re still moving her, and he races to catch up. She fights them off and manages to free herself long enough to run, but one of them grabs his gun and fires. Oh. Fuck.

She goes down. Jae-ha freezes just below her.

Blood drips down through the metal-grate floor to the lower level, at his feet.

He runs up the stairs as his agents secure the guards. She isn’t moving. He stumbles over to her with his head in his hands, not sure what to do, not ready to face it. He crouches down, hands shaking, and turns her over.

She looks up at him. He calls out her name like a wave of relief, and she screams from the pain. He looks down. It’s her leg. She was shot in the leg. Ohthankgoodness.

He cradles her in his arms, and she looks up and smiles, “Comrade Lee Jae-ha, it’s no big deal.” He clutches her to his chest for dear life, crying uncontrollably.

Wow, I was so wrapped up in that, I thought for sure it was the end of the episode. Man alive.

Bong-gu’s associate gives him the update and suggests they use Shi-kyung. He’s bloodied and currently enduring Chinese water torture. (Is that like a when in Rome thing?)

Bong-gu finds him being treated thusly and slaps Mia across the face. This is why you have no friends. He sits Shi-kyung down to make the offer: join his side. He seems to be playing right into their plan.

But Bong-gu is as shrewd as he is crazy, and needles Shi-kyung to take the offer as planned—after all, isn’t this a double agent mission? He points out Shi-kyung’s lack of a poker face, saying that someone with his personality isn’t cut out for mole work. I’m starting to agree. And worry.

Bong-gu says that really, Jae-ha is the bad guy for sending his friend into the enemy’s lair. I mean, he probably even pretended to put up a fight to appear less callous, but “he’s actually more ruthless [than me].”

He muses that if Jae-ha were born in a different time, he’d have slapped the faces of Yeonsangun and Nero. Ha. Shi-kyung counters that that’s all people like Bong-gu can see—what’s in front of his face.

He appeals to Shi-kyung’s vanity, asking him to set him straight then. He offers to let him get rid of anyone on his staff with a foul stench. Shi-kyung: “Aren’t you the cause of that stench?” Damn.

I love that knowing their plan doesn’t stop Bong-gu from trying to make Shi-kyung go darkside anyway. That’s HIS vanity, and they know it. Attempt #1 is a failure, but Bong-gu is determined to win Shi-kyung over. The fish is on the hook.

Hang-ah wakes up in bed (they’re still in China) and Dad scampers around to make sure she’s okay and getting rest, but she will have none of that—she asks for Jae-ha right this instant, freaking out about not wasting another minute in finding Bong-gu.

Jae-ha rushes in and she asks him, eyes wide with panic, if he has a plan for catching Bong-gu because they can’t let another minute pass with him out there. Jae-ha and Dad exchange worried looks and Dad leaves the room.

She asks again and again, and he tells her not to think about anything, and just rest. But she shakes her head no, getting more and more frantic. Tears start to fall, as she gasps, “How can I rest? Do you know what a scary person Kim Bong-gu is?”

She’s never once shown fear before this. Now I get why he and Dad were looking at each other so strangely.

He hugs her tight. “I’m sorry, Hang-ah-ya, for not protecting you. I know. I get it now, seeing you like this… how scared you were, how difficult it was for you. I know it now. I’m sorry Hang-ah-ya. I said I’d make you happy. But I’m a powerless bastard. I’m so sorry.”

She cries into his shoulder, her panic subsiding. Gah, the sight of her blue and purple hand clutching onto him just breaks my heart.

Jae-ha and Dad meet with a Chinese official who apologizes for the “incident” and Dad freaks out, but Jae-ha holds him back. He says that if they’re sorry, they can show it, by letting South Korean troops in country to catch Bong-gu.

The Chinese official in turn tells Bong-gu they’re no longer in cahoots, and orders him out of China in three hours. How perfect is it that Bong-gu’s bedroom is decorated like a child’s, full of oversized stuffed animals? It’s exactly as I pictured.

He’s short on time and moves, so he calls Shi-kyung over to make threats—what he got a taste of was Torture Lite, so if he doesn’t want to be begging to die, he should sign up for Team Blackhats.

His plan: have Shi-kyung pretend he’s succeeded in Mission Double Agent and then be a double-double agent, and feed Jae-ha false information about his whereabouts. He gives Shi-kyung time to think it over, or else he’ll end in bloody torture. And then he screams, “Why do you MAKE ME be this way?!” Yunno, I always found that to be the creepiest thing serial killers say.

Jae-ha sits with Hang-ah in bed and fills her in on everything. She freaks out at the news that he sent Shi-kyung. “That’s like entrusting a piece of meat to a tiger!” Aw, you think he’s a beefcake too?

Hang-ah: “If something goes wrong…” Jae-ha: “Then I’ll spend the rest of my life blaming myself…” He’s worried because there hasn’t been any contact, but says all they can do is wait. “We have to trust him.”

Shi-kyung’s torture just gets worse and worse, and Mia goes to town, threatening Dad and the princess like it’s Torture Christmas. Shi-kyung trembles, screaming out in pain. Did they finally do it? Did they break him?

Jae-ha gets a call. It’s Shi-kyung. He says that the plan worked and gives him the coordinates where Bong-gu will be… as Bong-gu listens. Jae-ha says their troops are arriving soon in country, so they’ll meet him there.

Shi-kyung asks if Jae-ha will come himself, but he says no—he’s found Hang-ah and she needs medical care. But Shi-kyung tells him he should come and witness Bong-gu’s capture with his own eyes, since this is what he’s been working towards. Bong-gu practically licks his chops at the king headed straight for his trap.

Jae-ha agrees and Shi-kyung gives him a place to meet. He sends Hang-ah home first, and she worries but he says it’ll be fine—it’s Eun Shi-kyung after all. He gives her a kiss and heads out.

Shi-kyung waits at an industrial plant and Jae-ha arrives, happy to see him. But Shi-kyung seems different, detached. Jae-ha asks why he’s lost so much weight, but he says nothing. We see snipers on the roof, and a bug behind Shi-kyung’s ear.

He takes Jae-ha in his own car without a security escort, and Jae-ha tries to make conversation on the way but Shi-kyung remains cryptically aloof. Hang-ah and Dad are on their way out, but she asks them to turn the car around—something doesn’t feel right.

Jae-ha and Shi-kyung arrive at a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean, and Jae-ha looks out, confused. Bong-gu is here? Shi-kyung says yes, so he follows. They climb through some rocks and come out onto the cliff, where Bong-gu is waiting with a team of gunmen.

Sitting across from each other are two thrones. One is empty, while Bong-gu sits in the other. He greets him with a smile and a bow, “Welcome, your majesty.”

Jae-ha turns slowly toward Shi-kyung…

Shi-kyung raises his gun in Jae-ha’s face.

Oh. Holy. Hell.

COMMENTS

AAAAUUUUUUUUUUGH. Damn is that a good ending. You finally learn how to do a cliffhanger right, just when it counts. The thing is, I still hold out faith that Shi-kyung is being a quadruple agent (or something, the math is confusing) – in that I think he and Jae-ha were banking on Bong-gu’s counter moves. This is chess, after all. Just with live pieces.

The thing that’s selling the other side though (that he really put on a black hat) is Shi-kyung’s performance, because he really did endure an insane amount of torture, and afterwards he seems hollowed out and lifeless. Even though I firmly believe he’s still got it together on the inside, seeing him that way puts everything into question. Nicely played.

No matter if this is Shi-kyung being a triple agent or not, that last image just kills me—him holding his gun out at Jae-ha like their first meeting. Before it meant nothing, but now it’s betrayal because of the friendship they’ve formed. Their relationship might honestly be my favorite thing about this drama, and if you kill that bromance, Show, I will break up with you.

I’m so glad that Jae-ha has finally made his move against Bong-gu and proud of the kind of king he’s become. He once laughed at Jae-kang for saying that the king was the people and that the throne belonged to them. He was the guy who called the royal family puppets and empty scarecrows, but in the end he puts his faith in the system and the people.

And I like the question of morality that Bong-gu raises, because after all, a king is often as ruthless and tyrannical as any mass murderer. But again that difference is people. At the end of the day, a king still answers to his people. A murderer does not. Though the system Jae-ha operates in is flawed and can be abused, it has a balance in place that keeps any one person from having too much power. Bong-gu just consumes endless power and wealth thinking that it’s enough, and is left asking why he doesn’t have what Jae-ha has. I love that it’s so simple – he has too much power to ever have what he really wants.

And Shi-kyung is the embodiment of that. He is in the purest sense the faith of the people in their king, and Bong-gu sees it. He wants it for himself like a shiny toy, thinking that possessing Shi-kyung will be the same as having his faith. The fact that Bong-gu and Jae-ha stand there on the cliff, waging war over one soldier – (besides the fact that the bromance tickles me pink) is the perfect distillation of that conflict. I didn’t think his capturing Hang-ah or Mom was anything more than a plot device, but the war over Shi-kyung feels vastly different—it’s their ideological war, and it’ll get at the heart of the central hero/villain conflict, which is exactly where I want to be before the finale.

Warning: I’ve been pretty lax about the spoiler posts in this thread, but if you post spoilers about next week’s finale (and I mean both episodes), you will get a pair of VERY CRANKY recaps from me. [Note: Proper spoiler etiquette is to mark anything even remotely spoilery in CLEAR, no uncertain terms, short of neon lights, so that anyone who doesn’t want to read it (namely ME) could see it from a mile away and swerve around your comment.] You have been warned. I hold a mean grudge, Lee-Jae-ha-style, and not the kind with revengey kisses either.

Thank you for the recap. It was so tense in parts, yet sweet in others. Your recap, though with your pithy comments made me laugh so much. Sometimes, once needs to relieve stress with laughter.

Thank you for the warning regarding spoilers. I think I am imposing a self imposed soompi/ DB absence to avoid spoilers myself. It's been driving me crazy ever since I read an accidental spoiler. That wasn't hidden. I want to preserve the experience. This will be worse than waiting for exam results, or a job interview. Shesh.

One last note, Earnest bot with the shiny puppy eyes. Can you please play a singer who lost his voice in your next drama? You have such expressive eyes. Then belt out some songs at the ending of your drama. SOMEONE, please give him a role... SOON :-)

Thanks, GF! You're absolutely the BEST! Love, love your recaps as usual.

And an even BIGGER THANKS to your spoiler warning. Though I was cursing and swearing when the episode ended without a trailer, I really appreciate it on hindsight. I DON"T WANT TO KNOW! The cliffhanger kills me but I'm loving it! Sounds crazy but I know my fellow hearties understand. Another symptom of tk2h virus.

Off to read what my hearties have to say.

And a couple of other things because I just can't stop:

-HOW GORGEOUS was the setting for the Shi-kyung/daddy Eun reunion?! The cinematography in that scene was breathtaking.

-Hang-ah may be my favorite kdrama heroine ever. Girl knows how to take care of herself, and she's so multifaceted. She's like the best parts of Jae-ha and Shi-kyung rolled into one hot, kickass package. When she was taking out those HORRIBLE Chinese guards while handcuffed and gagged, I was in awe.

-Going to the press with the Bong-gu confession video was a BRILLIANT move by Jae-ha. I loved it because it once again took away any possibility Bong-gu had at getting that which Jae-ha has and he does not--the respect and admiration of the people. Watching the public's horrified reactions to Bong-gu's words was perhaps the most satisfying scene in this episode, for me. When they cringed and even seemed to gag at the things Bong-gu said, it was just the perfect justice. Bong-gu can build himself however many thrones he wants, he can kidnap whoever he wants, he can throw money at whatever country he wants, but he will NEVER have the people on his side.

-I was squeeing through the entire princess/Shi-kyung scene.

-The fact that Shi-kyung wrote a letter before going off worries me. Let us hope that it's a "Dear Jae-shin, I like you. Do you like me? Check 'yes' or 'even more yes.' Love, Your Faithful Bot" letter and not an "in case I die" letter. Don't do that to us, mmkay, Show?

-I found it interesting that when he went to forgive his father, Shi-kyung was dressed in black while his father was in white, particularly since in the last episode, Eun was associated with darkness while Shi-kyung was in the light. Perhaps that was foreshadowing Shi-kyung's decision to venture into the "dark side" to redeem his family. It also might have been an indication of Eun's redemption in the eyes of the royal family.

-I really really hope our Ah-Ha couple gets a real, passionate kiss before the drama's over. I get why the kiss in this episode was the way it was, given the context, and their hugs were more intimate than most kisses are, but still. Pretty please?

-Another sign of the Hong sisters' genius: The fact that even a minor, minor character like the Chinese woman who took Hang-ah in has a moment to shine by warning HA of the incoming soldiers. Their little exchange could have so easily been nothing, but we actually had a sweet moment where Hang-ah offers the one thing of value that she possesses, and this stranger takes pity on her. Lovely.

Jae-ha, please tutor our Earnest Bot with some love skills. If his first kiss had him reeling like THAT I fear if his physiological system will handle any more skinship with JS!! :P

Like you I really REALLY want one passionate kiss b/w our OTP!! gahhhh, they slay me with the other relevent aspects of their rel'p but since we're almost done I hope Seung-gi gets an opportunity to pour everything he feels for HJW sunbae (pfftttt) into that kiss!!

I LOVED that exchange b/t Shi-kyung and Jae-ha. It so perfectly illustrated the differences in their character. I LOVE LOVE LOVED that Jae-ha was like, "DUDE. What's the hold up?! Go after the girl, for god's sake! Some of us are separated by an international crisis and a madman. You WORK IN THE SAME BUILDING AS JAE-SHIN. GO TO HER."

Also, I would swoon so hard over a kiss/skinship tutorial between Jae-ha and Shi-kyung. That boy needs some serious help, haha.

You know what strikes me about Jae Ha's complete acceptance of Shi Kyung and Jae Shin's budding relationship? He doesn't assume that he has any real say in it. Especially since Jae Shin's a grown woman in her mid to late twenties...in 2012.

I like that Jae Ha sees that they are two adults who like each other. While he has fun ribbing Shi Kyung about it, Jae Ha acknowledges that ultimately it's their choice to be together or not. He's simply there to enjoy the spectacle of Earnest Bot in Love, facilitate meetings, and give Bro-advice. lol

Yes, it strikes me as a really mature and adorable reaction. What I find funny is how surprised Shi-kyung is that this is Jae-ha's reaction. It's as though Shi-kyung has built it up as a Love that Cannot Be, while Jae-ha's like "Whatevs. Hit that!" Such a funny contrast in their behavior. I love their friendship so much.

Well, look at it this way. He, JH has fallen in love with a NK woman, which I bet he never in his wildest dream would have expected too. He overcame his personal prejudices or rather his love overcame all the prejudices, they had undergone so much just to be together, so what's the big deal of having a body guard fall in love with a princess? In fact, the SK and JS romance is quite ordinary compared to the JH/HA romance.

0

Lol.. too true! Shi-kyung's expecting the stereotypical k-drama over-protective reaction where he would be looked as not worthy and Jae-ha's like go for it!

0

@crazyahjummafan: good point at all the mountains JH had to move to be with his woman--it does make sense that he wouldn't even deem SK & JS's social positions as a blip on the radar. Even so, Jae-ha's always been pretty bold with Hang-ah (even before his trial by fire). What with the back patting in the WOC and the fridge kiss and even sleeping with her when they were barely engaged...he's definitely a man who takes action, whereas Shi-kyung is a man to take Pre-Approved, Heavily Deliberated Action, Only When it Has Been Reviewed by All Appropriate Sources and is Deemed the Correct and Proper Thing to Do.

0

*I just had to add that I don't think sexual repression was ever so adorable as when Shi-kyung interacts with the princess. Too cute.

0

I agree. And honestly he has FAR more important things to worry about - like a whole country - than who his sister dates.

In that respect, I was reminded about Jae Kang who while wanted to arrange a marriage for JH, he said the most important thing was JH's heart. In the same way, JH was only concerned about JS's heart. He was on board the moment he realised how she felt for Bot.

This whole family is just the best.

Haha so funny, amongst all the angst I love how Jae Ha still has time to give Shikyung a hard time. I loved all the scenes between them in the beginning, even (actually especially) when Shikyung calls Jae Ha by his name and used 'noh' (you). I wonder if the subs conveyed this, because that's some SERIOUS business- in Korean you would never, ever call anyone older than you or a person of higher rank 'noh'. If I ever used 'noh' with my parents I would get bitch slapped to high heaven. I love that it showed Shikyung both being incredibly disrespectful to get a reaction, but also defining their relationship as one of equals.

I have to say, a teeny part of me during their exchange of glances in that scene had me going "just kiss already" (sorry Hangah, sorry Jaeshin). But Saima, at the same time I really do want a passionate kiss btwn HA & JH too!

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

The subs didn't convey the seriousness of using 'noh.' Thanks for sharing! I got that Shi-kyung called JH by his own name (rather than calling him "king") and that was a big deal, but I didn't catch the extent of his disrespect. That makes me love their interaction even more.

You know, in some ways the relationship between Jae-ha and Shi-kyung follows the traditional "kdrama" cliches usually reserved for OTPs, which I find incredibly funny and heartwarming. They totally have a love/bickering thing going on.

I love the way they wrote that twitchy twist Bong Gu used to play Shi Kyung. Bong Gu is no dummy! He is an evil guy with a capital E but he did not get to where he is today by being dumb or duped easily.

And I even love Shi Kyung's response to that even more. Gosh, how did they do it? You thought the plot cannot be more brilliant, but then you are propelled to the next bend, totally unexpected but completely breathtaking.

I totally sensed the taking care of your affairs before your final moments vibes from Shi Kyung's farewell to his father. Everything is suddenly falling into places when you think your life is ending.

Love Shi Kyung and Jae Ha's conversation, with the door and without. Another, boy, I am running low on adjective, great moment of heightened yet truthful drama moment.

-2nd that, AnnMichelle. Like GF, I, too, thought SK's forgiveness came too quickly and a sneaky suspicion came to my head already. His decision to go to BG confirmed it.

And regardless of whatever he said about he being him and his dad being his dad, I don't buy it. Earnest Bot is out to redeem his father's betrayal as well as take revenge for what BG did to JS.

I agree. His desperation when Jae-ha refused to send him off to China and his open admission to Jae-shin that he tries to tell himself that he shouldn't feel guilty makes me believe that he is trying to redeem his father by going into the lion's den. Here's hoping that his sense of duty to Jae-ha and his desire to help/return to/protect Jae-shin will outweigh his guilt.

I'm worried that Shi Kyung's scenes in this episode ~forgiving his father's misdeeds, being with JaeShin with matching kiss, and writing that letter ~ don't mean that he's saying goodbye to us, right? I was thinking about who would die in this drama ..... Shi Kyung? Hang Ah? or Jae Ha? Because if they all survive then the drama would seem too merciful, not killing off one of the beloved characters.

But then I realized that they have all gone through hell because of Kim Bong Gu .... it would be nice if they all survived & it wouldn't be the writers being too nice.

I hope they all live. Especially our AHa couple!! <3

"Because if they all survive then the drama would seem too merciful..."

Merciful?!! I beg to differ. This show's hardly been merciful to any of the royal family members and those associated with them. We've been put through the ringer along with these beloved characters.

SK it seems to me the MOST likely one who could prolly be killed. But, I don't want the writers to kill him since JS REALLY needs him and JAE-ha REALLY needs him as well. Their bromance is so epic...and, JH still needs a devout friend confidante who'll always have his back.

Perhaps I'm being selfish but I want a happy ending for the 4 characters and I don't think I'm asking for too much since I've never cried for a drama's characters as I have for this one.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Agreed.

Star, don't forget that we've already lost two of our royal family--Jae-kang and his wife. And Hang-ah's unborn child. And the use of Jae-shin's freaking LEGS.

I care about all of the characters so much that I would be devastated if one of them were to die (except perhaps Sec Eun, but I've discussed that at length in epi 17's recap)--not so much for the loss of that character, but for the impact it would have on the surviving characters. If Shi-kyung dies, I honestly can't see Jae-shin recovering from that, or recovering from her own guilt. And hasn't she been through more than enough?! If Jae-ha dies...no. Jae-ha cannot die. Who will lead the country? What will that say about the Korean monarchy?! If Hang-ah dies, Jae-ha will be a shell of a man. I don't see him recovering from that and being able to lead the country as a great king. Furthermore, what will happen to North/South Korean relations? All that Jae-kang and Jae-ha have worked for will unravel.

I strongly reject the idea that an ending will be more "poetic" if one of our main characters dies.

I beg to differ, too. At this point, except for the baddies, everybody just needs to LIVE. From day 1, this drama was never merciful. Our main characters have suffered enough pain and endured unspeakable horrors that the thought of even killing one of them is just too cruel.

@Minea Very well put, I second that. poetic schmoetic. dying for honour is over-rated. i dont need another martyr. nobody good has to die for the ending to hold more meaning.
what i need is a happy ending. a happy ending would hold more weight after all the darkness in the last few episodes or actually since episode 1.

0

@Minea and satsuki: this x100. I think after all our royal fam has been through, grieved, and lost, the most poetic ending would be watching them defeat Bong-gu and start the long process of rebuilding their lives together, hand in hand. That, to me, would be much more meaningful than killing off a character just to show how high the stakes are. We get it. The stakes are crazy high. We don't need to grieve again to appreciate that.

If Hang Ah died. i dare say the king wd have lost his part of his soul & spirit . i think he'd be moving around pretty much zombified. Im glad , again , thats its not a HK movie.
As for her scars , well , everyone , I dare say , JH too , more than happy to take a battled scarred but very alive Hangah then a dead Queen to be. Sorright I think.
I felt that HangAh showed human-ness in her losing her nerve & cool upon waking. Its a first time to see her finally crack .If Only for a bit then she'll spring back up to badassy again.
She turned the car around at d last part. oh Please! There's just so much physical & psychological trauma a body can take.@ bullet wound. Slapped wt a man's angered strength. Fall offa height. Ill treated in prison. She's human & No cartoon super hero !
I seriously have no confidence she's fit to kickass .
Frankly , if the writers wrote that in , then I feel it'll be an overkill of her human wonder woman-ness. Please DONT.
As for Shi kyung. I'm almost 100% sure , he's not gonna renegade on the King. For such a stoic loyalist , it needs a damn damn good reason to be a turn coat...maybe like , JH killed Eun Snr or tortured him to death but so far , jH has been all kinds of bromantically wunderbar. So...No.
I stand by ShiKyung regardless how bad things look.

OMG! That... I am speechless. The episode was a rollercoaster ride. I don't want to be on it, but, I had been strapped in and unable to get out. It's just insanely ridiculous how things turn and twist around the edge and nearly sent me off the cliff.

The one thing I love about this drama had always been pushing it to the max. There was no family drama keeping the couple apart, no overly done love rivalry, it's something else. It took a different path and made your head spin again and again. There was no forbidden romance, just political implicatio which they deal with as they go. There is no second male lead to steal the attention of the female lead. There is just loads of male bonding and genuine friendships.

I love how Hang Ah and Jae Ha always find each other and even when they are apart, their thoughts of one another kept them going. It was heartbreaking to watch, but oh-so-good and nicely written.

There was also that faith in each other between Shi Kyung and Jae Ha. I mean, I envy the bromance. I love how they keep running to save each other. I wish I have a best friend like that. That moment wheb Shi Kyung called Jae Ha by his name and speaking Banmal, I was surprised and feel giddy all over. Their subsequent conversation just crack me up LOL. Lee? Jae? Ha?... Epic!

And there is the kiss with the Princess, I was doing a happy dance for that. It was like... FINALLY! And I love how the couple have Jae Ha's support.

The cliffhanger was just killer for me. It made me wanna cry... Shi Kyung pointing a gun to Jae Ha... No, don't kill the bromance! *sobs*

There are just too many lines uttered in this drama that I feel will become classics. Who could ever forget "I'll kiss you everyday . . . for revenge." or "I. Don't. Love. You"

It's just too good.

“I. Don’t. Love. You” --> Love-sick for Hang-Ah AND JH's relief upon finding his HA to be safe

snifflessss

What will we do after Ep 20 airs?

the " you trust me and i'll trust you" = JH + HA
i think we can safely say that they own this phrase now.

ah, i gotta share my experience while watching this scene. i was live streaming and when i saw the hand on HA's shoulder, i knew it, it must be HA thought about JH.

And that point, when the sad and solitude feelings gave shiver to my whole body and the tears in my eyes were slowly blurring my view...

the connection went off and i got a blank scree saying the internet connection was down.

So I went, 'freaking what the hell internet connection??!! Someone's about to cry and can't u be a bit more kind here??!!'

When I downloaded the whole ep, i still got teary watching that scene but at the same time, cudn't help myself from cursing the internet connection. :P

At first, I was like, huh? another dream sequence? But the drama continues to surprise and not disappoint. Wonderfully touching scene that! The wordless exchange of looks nailed it perfectly.

Argh...is this the peak of kdrama? What if nothing ever comes close again?

The scene was delicious for me. The way he hugged her was just so sweet. LSG and HJW must be really close after this comes to an end. I really want to know if he calls her noona. I know in interviews he calls her sunbae or Ha Ji Won-shi.

Can we have another drama where he calls her noona and they play up the age difference? Pwease~? :3

I started off watching (and loving) Rooftop Prince and only took a look at K2H in passing. But, what hooked me in to watching K2H was the shooting star/singing scene between Jae Shin and Shi Kyung...ever since then I've totally switched shows. The Rooftop emotional storyline has gone downhill but K2H has just amped it up all the way!! The acting in this show is absolutely phenomenal. The pair who play the princess and the soldier have really dug deep and have tapped the emotions of the most stoic viewers. This is a rare drama, indeed. Looking forward to a strong finish.

I'm with you. I started out with Rooftop Prince (because of Yoochun, i mean c'mon he's sucha puppy, admit it...) but soon jumped ship to The King 2 Hearts. T'was the scene where Jae Shin was in full blown panic mode trying to grab for that tissue to clean up herself, that got me. just thinking of it makes me :'(

I'm not a LSG fan but I gotta say he's acting gets so good with every episode. I wasn't amused with his doofy goofy character in the first few episodes cause it's what I would expect him to act like. Now, he's got me. I can fell everything that he's feeling/acting out. Same goes for all the other characters in the drama.

I can safely say that I've never once cried when a kdrama hero/heroine cried. For TK2H, each time a character is crippled with pain, it hits me. The pain and tears hits me like it's my own.

Next week, last two episodes! I.CANT.WAIT.

Did you watch episode 18 of Rooftop? I realize that the show is different from K2H but in just comparing the dramatic scenes (since RP has decided it wanted to melo instead of comedy, unfortunately...) there is now a glaringly huge gulf in abilities between the actors...the characters in RP are becoming laughable (not on purpose, either) while those of K2H are delving deeper and are continuing to be more believable.

Isn't Lee Yoon Ji amazing? She is acting her heart out in this role. And her chemistry with the actor who plays the soldier is combustible.

I agree with you about LSG, too. I thought he was passable but forced in Shining Inheritance but he has really matured in this one.

I've been watching the last few episodes first without subs and the acting is so incredibly real that I find myself in tears even though I don't understand what's being said.

I. CANT. WAIT. EITHER....but, we must...boo hoo.

I haven't watched RTP ep. 18 yet b/c I've been too obsessed with K2H and anything to do with it... but I, too started out anticipating and loving RTP and now I think K2H is the best drama I've ever seen.

BUT with RTP, I don't blame the actors so much as the writers. The actors can only do so much with what's been written. Frankly, I think Yoonchun's doing the best he can. I'm not a fan of his but I've been enjoying his performance.

Yes I breezed through Rooftop Prince Epi 18 (can i even actually say that i watched it? HAHA). I got so pissed during the scene where Se-na took Bu-Yong's phone and Bu-Yong didn't noticed it all. i mean the "oh, so unni's ringtone is the same as mine" moment???? pffffft, aint the brightest lightbulb is she now. and dont get me started on the pushing Yi-Gak away from the car scene. -_- i'm not getting anything from their acting too. i dont feel sad, i feel an immense amount of rage that has nothing to do with me being invested with the characters feelings.....

"Isn’t Lee Yoon Ji amazing? She is acting her heart out in this role. And her chemistry with the actor who plays the soldier is combustible."

I KNOW RIGHT. Lee Yoon Ji is just........
I think I love her. No wait, I love Jo Jung Suk too. ah heck it, i'll take the both of them.
I'm so glad that their 2nd lead characters are not just a love obstacle to the main leads. (yes im talking about you Rooftop Prince and a whole lot of other kdramas)

I've been watching the last few episodes raw first too. The korean speech just flies past my head but I, like you, find myself in tears. Now, I think this is what we can call excellent acting!

Agreed. This is definitely her star-making turn! When she was scared out of her mind in the ambulance and Shi Kyung found her on the floor...the way she tried to say his name...completely in the moment and believable. Yes, and the cries in Ep. 17! Heartbreak. Added to that, she has singing talent and beauty (yet is unafraid to just be raw and unlovely).

Jo Jung Suk! Knew nothing of him before this show. He is simply a magnificent actor. How he stifles his cries and touches the cheek of the suffering, sleeping princess...the revelation and confrontation scenes with his father...the way he handles the king...how he reprimands himself after the kiss...AHHHHHH, such a joy to watch.

I wonder what will be next for each of them? K2H will be a hard act to follow!!

0

Oh please don't remind me about that heart wrenching scene. How does she make that guttural noise. It sounds like the cries come straight from her heart. She's excellent.

There are some really good criers in TK2H.

0

@JheartsK:

I believe JJS has signed on to do a movie!! You can check him out in What's Up....he plays a diametrically opposite character than his TK2H's SK!! :D

Seung-gi's been getting love calls to do movies but he'll be focusing on his singing career for the remainder of the year. :/ ahhh, the wait until we get to experience his awesomeness....although like you said he'll have to deliberate a LOT for his next acting role. ickkkk!! Do well, Seung-gi yaaaa!! <3

0

love love love Lee Yoon Ji. She is so winning. She does everything she does in a way that makes you like her to bits.
Her cries when she was trying to clean up at the hospital, when she was at the ambulance, and when she found out her memory... and at the garden with shi kyung---ouch...so moving. Totally makes me wanna hug her.

0

Don't even get me started on RTP. Ep 18 has gone so far into "we are daft & have lost the plot" territory that I am not even gonna bother to watch it anymore.

It is unfortunate that I ave K2H & QIHM to compare it to as I think I might have more patience if it was compared to ... say, Moon/Sun.

Anyway, back to K2H, I was wondering why Lee Yoon JI has not been a lead actress before as she is so phenomenal! I asked before but I'll try again ... is she not considered attractive enough in Korea? Because I think she's quite attractive even if not a raving beauty. But her acting ... she's gonna be on par with the actress playing the Queen Mum before she gets to her age!

Moon/Sun was another case of potential unfulfilled, huh? I enjoyed the younger cast so much!

I think Lee Yoon Ji is physically beautiful but even more, able to access the emotional core and make the viewer feel her joy and pain. The way she acted this role has definitely pushed her to the fore as leading lady material...and not for the light stuff either, though she can be comedic, too. She has proven that she can handle the deep stuff. There are certainly less talented actresses that have gotten the leads (Ha Ga In, imho) but this has got to be Yoon Ji's breakout role...please, dramaland!

Ditto for Jo Jung Suk.

0

Agree about Lee Yoon Ji. I liked her in Dream High but I positively love her here. Every episode, she turns in really great performances that I scratch my head wondering why she doesn't have a lot of starring roles. Hopefully, K2H would put an end to that dry spell and bring her a lot of drama and movie offers.

Softsubs out for ep 17 alone so far (don't like streaming) so I can only give you thoughts on that.

K2H is the first time in my kdrama life that I've ever watched episodes raw. I never could understand the levels of obsession that led someone to do that but now I do. I'm always thinking that there are far too many things to be done than to 'waste' time watching one episode twice or even repeating a drama (never done that either except for the jdrama Hana Yori Dango). *blushes* Now I'm biting my words because I'll be re-watching this.

Required fields are marked *

Ahhhh...Hana Yori Dango. That's a blast from the past! One of the better jdramas, for sure. But, they had to overdo a good thing with the movie which was a lot of flash with a lot less heart.

I digress...and, yes, there ARE "far too many things to be done than to 'waste' time watching one episode twice or even repeat a drama..." but sometimes that obsession just takes over, huh?! Yes, I'm with you - I'll be re-watching this one again - for all the great things I caught and all the subtleties I missed (many of which girlfriday and other viewers have pointed out).

Feelin' like I'll be put out of my misery soon w/RP but will be pining for more w/K2H!

i'm sure we all know china has thousands of dialects and in turn when these different regions speak "mandarin" their national language they obviously would have accents.
like people in hong kong have really thick accents when speaking mandarin.
these chinese actors are probably from those different regions not necessarily native mandarin speakers. thus the accents.

what i'm really curious about is who that chinese wife was?!? anyone who knows. i'm pretty sure i've seen her in one hk or c dramas/movies even. she really looks very familiar.

Ha Jiwon's mandarin is surprisingly decent. A few of the guards and the couple's mandarin was off, but English vs Mandarin wise, Mandarin is way better off. Also, it'll be very unfair if moon-sun gets the awards based on its ratings cos to be honest, there wasnt any competition then (source: dramabeans recap) haha. so, i think more aspects are taken into consideration and its not merely based on ratings. I think a actor can only portray a character as well as it is written.

HA's character is richer than GRI's. As for crying, much as I enjoyed watching SeGa, I wasn't very convinced by GRI being moved to tears in some of the crying scenes. Whereas in tk2h, every crying scene is nicely built up, making viewers cry along too.

I agree with this. I thought that Ha Ji-won was smokin' in Secret Garden, but Hang-ah is such a well-written character that Ji-won is certainly shining more in this drama. All of the elements of this drama are superb, and the directing is better than I've seen on pretty much any other kdrama, so I'm not surprised. I'm not sure it's that her acting has improved so much as it is that this drama is a much richer, more complex storyline with better writing and stronger directing, and therefore provides her more opportunities to blow us away.

All that said, I am waiting for another TK2H kiss that rivals the Hyun Bin/Ji-won party kiss (or the post-wedding bed kiss) (or the elevator kiss) in SeGa. Dang, there were a lot of kisses in that show. The K2H fridge kiss was hot hot hot but that was soooo long ago. Hehe.

To remind everyone: the fridge kiss happened 6 bloody weeks ago!!!

While SG had its fair share of kisses I was not invested in that show...heck, i even discontinued watching it! Whereas the stolen glances, shaky breaths, sweet kisses, & enveloping hugs in TK2H will remain etched in my memory until another OTP comes along that 'may' rival our Ah-Ha!

True that. I loved SeGa, but that show and its OTP do not hold a hold a candle to TK2H. Comparing the two is like comparing the world's greatest apple to expired orange juice.

The love portrayed in SeGa was heartwarming (except for Hyun Bin's char's tendency to asshole-ishness), but the love in TK2H is so textured, nuanced, and real, I do find myself swooning more over a well-placed hug than a makeout session on any other drama.

0

I agree. I loved Secret Garden but their romance was more the stuff of fantasy while the romance in K2H is more mature.

It's like Ha Ji Won's characters grew to realise what love was in Secret Garden and proceeded to kick ass to protect it in K2H. Heh ...

Omg!!! Just finished watching it and it was sooooooooooooo awesome!!! Its been such a long time since I've really enjoyed watching a kdrama. I'm surprised its not beating out agaisnt Equator Man and Rooftop Prince, which I find to be boring and redundant.. :/ I really wanted to like them but I just couldn't get past the first four episodes. *sigh* But The King 2 Hearts really had me pulled into the conflicts, story and relationships. First time I actually liked every single character, even Rotten Cookies. Every actor/ actress in this drama really showed their talents in their character portrayals. I just hope I don't get disappointed with the final week. Please, please end well!! Or even semi-well, if not awesome!!

How I love that the one whom HA saw the first time she opened her eyes was her dad. He, then, treated her with all his worries over his beloved daughter. That looks so real like that's a father will do seeing his beloved daughter in a bad condition. He also understood that when JH came he gave them some privacy. So lovely. This is another example of how different this drama from others. We usually watch in most dramas that the first person the heroine sees after she wakes up is the hero (and usually sleeps on his arms while sitting beside her bed), or vice versa.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

YES!! The dad is always in the picture but in a good way. In TK2H, even the scene where the heroine wakes up in recovery is not cheapened by taking the soap opera way out, as you mentioned...it's the parent who is always by the side, especially since JH would realistically be busy settling other stuff as king.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah. It was so realistic, too! Like random person said, I'm sure Jae-ha would've loved to be by her side, but he's a king in the middle of a crisis. Of course he would have to be elsewhere.

Also, did HA's dad's gestures towards his daughter right before he left the room have anyone else in tears? You could tell that he just wanted to wrap his precious daughter in his arms and make all her pain go away, but he realized that was not his place anymore and he just had to step back, even though it killed him. SUPERB acting from HA's father. It's details like that that get me.

Required fields are marked *

Initially I was not sure how to take Hang Ah's father as he seemed so stiff and colourless to me. Then as I saw more of him, I realised that it was because I was not used to how North Koreans are portrayed.

His stoicism and old-fashioned mannerisms made all his small gestures of affection and love towards Hang Ah even more poignant. And yes, when he caressed her head this episode, I felt a tear leak.

I love how this drama gives even the smaller roles their moments. And the cast ... from the lady in waiting who grew in our estimation from a rigid automaton to a loyal, insightful ally, to Dong Ah who lowered his binoculars to reveal his red-rimmed, tears-filled eyes.

I am going to have a very hard time after this accepting half-arsed acting, half-baked writing and half-hearted commitment from lackluster dramas. Oh K2H, you have ruined me ...

I love that it's her dad who was at her side when she woke up. I always roll my eyes when the OTP in other K-dramas only have eyes for each other and 'conveniently' forgot about their parents and relatives who care about them, especially when they have terminal illnesses, injured, etc. Hence, when they're crying in each other's arms or having noble-idiocy-inspired separations, I was screaming at them, "Don't you have parents too?? Think about them too, seriously!"

Required fields are marked *

After watching ep 18, it hit me why I love this story so much. This is just my opinion.

It's about the power of LOVE. Not just romantic love, but selfless, forgiving, empowering love.

First the royal family: We've all said countless times how we love the royal family. Why? Because they are so loving to each other. They know each other's strengths and weaknesses, yet they accept, believe and support each other.
1) JK sending JH to the WOC was a bold move, but it showed that he believed in JH, despite his frivolous and playboy ways. He was actually taking a great risk. It was the first time NK and SK were participating as one; all eyes were on them - should JH make a mistake, it would be extremely humiliating, could even start a war. Which it almost did. BUT hyung gave JH second chance. That's love.

2) QD and JS showed their love by rebuking JH each time he did something foolish. That's love too. You don't push things under the carpet. You correct them in love.

3) JH's love for his family - being by JS's side during her therapy, even though HA was still missing AND supporting SK's love for her. He was the ultimate loving big brother - arranging the rendevous because he knew that they both needed it. Talk about sweet, sensitive new age guy!

4) QD's acceptance and love for HA, despite her initial prejudice.

To be able to forgive and accept forgiveness:
5) Many of us felt intially that HA was too quick to forgive JH for the things he did to her, esp the shooting incident. To be able to forgive so willingly and give the other person another chance, again and again, is love.

6) JH and HA's ability to forgive Sec Eun. To be able to see that he is not an evil person, but a fallen one, is love. I was touched when JH asked him to help out.

7) SK's ability to forgive his father.

8) JS's ablility to forgive herself. So that others around her won't feel that they need to walk on ice each time they are around her.

9) QD's ability to forgive Sec Eun.
So often in shows and dramas, we see people forgetting but not forgiving. That's why I love this show.

To be able to trust and respect others, and unwavering loyalty is love too.
9) JH and HA's trust in each other
10) JH and SK's bromance. They way they supported and believed in each other.
11) The WOC trust and respect which was hard earned.

The ability to see and accept your mistakes, is to love yourself and others. Because if you can see that your mistakes are making others suffer and in your love for them you are willing to change, that's love. That's why we love JH. Sec Eun is redeeming himself bec he is able to finally come to terms with himself, and to realise the pain he has caused.

I could go on. The most glaring thing is that BG doesn't have this - made very obvious by toupe guy's betrayal. That's why he is so evil.

To sum it all up, I would like to quote from a great book.
(I hope no one takes offence as I know we are all from different races, nationalities and religions).

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always persevere.

I think this show comes close to this.

Great analysis. I agree completely.

This is part of why I find Bong-gu to be such a compelling character, because he so desperately wants love but he so clearly lacks it, and manipulates/pushes away/attempts to control anybody who could possibly give it to him. I think the characterization of him as a lost little boy (with his child's bedroom, his suspenders, his little bow ties, his magic tricks) is brilliant because he is, essentially, a little boy acting out, desperate for the unconditional love of a parent. A little boy with unlimited resources and sociopathic tendencies, mind you.

And the great thing about this power of love is, in this drama, they EXPRESS it.

They show their love to one another. In so many various forms, like true life and true love.

A family recipe taught to the daughter-in-law. Cosmetics, empty and full bottles. A parrot. A hand on the shoulder, on the face.

And, those words. A simple "I trust you" that speaks volume!!!

YES. So refreshing. And they express it not by trying to control each other, or by shielding each other from all pain, but by living with each other honestly and by consistently acting on their love.

And how beautiful is it that they make mistakes, but they continue to grow into their love for each other.

Everything u said is exactly how I felt about the relationships in this drama.I loved all the support and forgiveness they showed to each other ,except ...I just couldn't understand HOW everyone was able to forgive sec. Eun so quickly? I mean it wasn't like he just made some simple mistakes;'cause he continued to cooperate with club M,knowing exactly who they were.Like Jea Ha said ,one could (try to) understand his first mistake, but aiding the murderer to flee the country after that?!(and lots of other "mistakes" after that). I actually could see why SK did it,he thought he might not be able to see him again. But Jea Ha even coming PERSONALLY to ask him to come back was surprising to say the least.Idk, maybe he is a bigger person than I am,but I cant help but think it's a little too far from his I-hold-grudges personality that we saw in the earlier episodes. And was I the only one who felt a little uncomfortable to see him back in the palace?

I thought that Shi-kyung was too quick to forgive his father, but then when we discovered his plan to infiltrate Bong-gu, his behavior made sense to me even though I was not expecting it. It was like he was getting all his affairs in order before going off to war, and so I understood that he would want to resolve his relationship with his father before leaving.

As for Jae-ha, I think that his welcoming Eun back to the palace was more believable given the last two episodes. Even when Hang-ah reminded Jae-ha of how hard everything must've been on Eun, Jae-ha's reaction was "I need time" rather than "I'm gonna kill the bastard!"

It actually made me proud of our king that he has learned the value of forgiveness, and it is interesting to contrast Jae-ha's behavior with Bong-gu's, who immediately tortures and kills his minion when he discovers that the minion has double-crossed him. JH and BG may have a lot in common, but JH is rapidly distancing himself from his Bong-gu like tendencies, which is a joy to watch.

I didn't mean that I never wanted JH to forgive him, just that it was too soon.I mean even in ep 17 when Sec. Eun called him, he was still very cold to him.Remember he said he'll tell his staff not to give any information to him anymore?(right before he saw SK's name and realized he's found out everything). But maybe he felt guilty about sending SK to danger and that's why he went to talk to his dad? That's the only reason I can think of,'cause just like u mentioned, he said he needed time and It didn't seem much time has past... . But it's a very minor complaint anyway(If I can even call it that)since I just love everything about this drama;D

0

"But maybe he felt guilty about sending SK to danger and that’s why he went to talk to his dad?"

@pink violet: I too felt it was unrealistic for JH to forgive Sec Eun so quickly especially since HA was still in danger. I mean, given the situation, one is not likely to be in a very forgiving frame of mind. That it came so quickly on the heels of JH accepting SK's offer to go undercover with BG gave me the same idea as you.

Btw, what are your views on the whole undercover mission? Is JH's confession to Sec Eun about pretending to stop SK true? Later BG said the same about JH & said he's actually more evil than himself. But to me, JH genuinely didn't want SK to endanger himself. The combination of SK's determination to make restitution for his father's guilt & the compelling feasibility of his proposal was what persuaded JH.

Another point I found disturbing was how quickly Sec Eun accepted the idea is SK going undercover too. Com'on, as his dad he should be the first to smell SK's need to redeem his sins from a mile away. Yet, he said nothing about stopping his one & only son from going into the crazy lion's den. Seems like the only thing he cared about was getting his old job back.

0

@Babes:U know I think it was both,JH didn't want to put SK in danger. He knew how crazy BG was and that he was capable of doing unimaginable and cruel things. That's why he banned him from leaving the country. But he is also smart enough to recognize the logic of SK's argument.First time we see it in the airport. The change is visible on his face when he listens to his reasoning,it's like he is thinking:oh!it actually makes sense!I don't want to hear it!(hence he calls the guards and finishes the conversation). Later,he founds himself even more cornered, especially after he finds about what has happened to poor JS,So when SK approaches him again(also being more desperate because of JS' situation), he finally gives in,reluctantly. I think he feels guilty because he had the power to force him to stay, but chose not to.His decision felt like a parent's decision to me rather than a superior, though. Like he recognized his ability and courage and realized he should let him make his own decisions, even though he'd be worried sick for him.I don't know if that makes any sense, but that's how I felt, especially during his chat with sec. Eun.Just like u,I didn't feel much love or worry from HIM toward his son(then again I never felt ANY feeling from the guy, except maybe stubbornness and self-righteousness). I'm sorry, I know everyone's happy about Sec. Eun being forgiven and all but I still don't feel any sympathy for him.Somehow I feel he hasn't completely reflected upon his wrongdoings;but maybe he'll surprise me later, who knows?;D

Thank you for your great insights and love your last quote & babe's quote too.

I know that there's so many meaning for The King 2 Hearts:
- love for his country and his woman
- Jae Ha and Hang Ah's love
- North and South's reunification

can it also mean?
- the difference between Jae Ha's heart and Bong Gu's heart? ~ both of them are The King ~ one is The King of his own company (& probably delusional) while the other one was officially "The King" not by choice but due to his family's circumstances.

"can it also mean?
- the difference between Jae Ha’s heart and Bong Gu’s heart?"

Yes, absolutely! Not only that, but Jae-ha has the potential to choose where to lead his heart. He could lead it down the path epitomized by Bong-gu, where he exploits his power to control and manipulate others; or he could lead it down the path of his older brother, where he uses his power to do good for Korea and for his family.

I think an additional reading of the title is possible now, given that the central conflict of the story is resting on the question of loyalty and double-crossing. Does Shi-kyung have two hearts--one for his king and one for Bong-gu? What is loyalty and how does one achieve it? Should a king give his heart freely by trusting those around him, or should he hold it back?

Gosh, I remember hating the title when it was changed from The King. Who could've predicted that I would be analyzing it to death in the weeks to come?

That vignette really feels like a short (a short film). It's so well executed.

HJW's half closed eyes, so dull and lifeless...the blood dripping on the floor...

And LSG's tearing up the stairs but hesitant steps...all the commotion in his wake but he took no notice at all, his eyes full of fear only on Hang Ah...

Earlier someone said they should all win awards. I don't really care if they do or not (as I have no control over that) but this scene...I really want to let them know it's just so wonderfully done.

But did anyone think "..ah, stress!" when JH held his hand to his head? His one true, hoest-to-God, genuine stressful moment throughout the drama. After I regained some semblance of composure, that is, after the 4th or 5th viewing, I did think about that. But then I thought maybe he's recovering from running up the stairs so fast, and the sudden stop just gave him a dizzy spell? Not to mention seeing a motionless Hang Ah lying there.

Now I cannot tell at all what was planned and what was impromptu. LSG just embodies Lee Jae Ha. Everything flows from inside and springs up so naturally. Just like his chemistry with HJW. The line is totally blurred from my point of view.

But what a relief when we saw HA blinked, alive.

I think LSG portrayed his character amazingly for that scene. Did you guys notice how his hand trembling so badly? Even after hugging HA?

*Then K.Will song came in and at that time, BAM! I think I, myself was LJH, crying in shock and terror.*

I felt the same way too. It was also nicely done...when the music starts Hang-ah's blood start to trickle...I just died! I felt the King's love for this commoner from the North whom he used to taunt that she's not a woman in his eyes....

0

what was amazing is the tear that drop almost on cue when he was cradling Hang Ah, is it just me but LSG's tears always seems Big and sparkly , something clear and pure

0

@ann: LOL at your comment "LSG’s tears always seems Big and sparkly , something clear and pure."

I didn't notice that and I'm not sure why I found that so funny, but I did. I wouldn't be surprised if this boy cried diamonds, he's just that good.

0

yes yes yes... after watching it for the nth time (and tearing up) I noticed his hand trembling uncontrollably when cradling hang ah's head.... Wow he is so totally into it I'm so proud of Seung gi!

And when the music played I died---that is usually the cue in k dramas for last breath scenes.... I was so freakin scared.

and hee... I thought " ahh stress...." too!!;P

0

Oh thank goodness I was not the only one who thought "stresss" wen he did that ... LOL.

Drum rolls...

Award time! Who guessed the 'happy now' thing triggering the recording of the conversation between Jae Ha and Bong Gu?

I knew some people did guess that. Because when I read it I was like, no way that's gonna fly. But, I was wrong. And I salute the prophets!

Also, isn't the whole revelation scene just awesome? The authority in the manners of Jae Ha the King is just so, what, kingly?! Gives me goosebumps.

I remember quite a few people picked it up but at that time, the chief secretary was also listening to the conversation and it seemed likely that the convo could be taped on his computer - so it didn't seem obvious to me that the "evidence" would play out that way. I definitely forgot that the king's diary is a vblog and not just an audio recording.

@AnnMichelle,
This drama really is the mecca for "expect the unexpected". I've guessed so many scenarios based from what my crystal ball is telling me BUT didn't happen! Good thing I'm not a fortune teller or I'll be out of business and worse be sued left and right! LOL!

For example, I predicted that the right hand toupee guy will stab him in the back but I didn't expect that he's going to die in this episode! LOL! I think I went nuts when I laughed so hard because it was supposed to be a dramatic/horrific scene ~ when he was being drowned/killed you know.

So yeah, this drama is unbelievably mostly unpredictable :D

And Agree that the whole revelation scene is awesome!

I think the writers did a good job with the whole video recording. The only thing I find strange is that it took all this time for the king to think about it. I thought the video diary was a daily recording, so he should have seen it sooner, to my way of thinking. Of course he had a lot of other things to think about.....

I have a suspicion that our King Jae Ha does not like to do what he's told to do. Especially about homework!!! When Secretary told him that it was supposed to be a daily thing, he quickly added it did not look good if the king left it for too long without any entry. The secretary KNOWS Jae Ha! And then of course it had something to do with Jae Ha being preoccupied. Gosh, this poor king! Did he even have ONE uneventful day since he took over???

I think I'm going to refrain from entering any TK2H threads/forums as we near the airing date of the last two episodes. It's REALLY hard (almost impossible, from my past experiences) not to get spoiled because there's ALWAYS someone, somewhere, unintentionally saying things that involve a spoiler :P So staying away from the internet is the best bet lol. It's going to be sooo difficult for me though as I practically live and breathe TK2H ever since the early episodes T_T It'll be such torture to not get my TK2H fix for a few days, but must.. control.. myself... Most heartfelt and touching piggyback scene ever!

I've always felt like k-dramas have overused their piggyback scenes to a point where it doesn't mean much anymore but with Shi Kyung and Jae Shin, it's just so beautiful and cuts me right to the core. He finally realizes that he is not just a mere plaything for him and can now see a future of them together.

And it also makes me very, very nervous. The things he said to her just sounds too much like a goodbye. Kinda like the Prosecutor's last scene with his ex-wife in City Hunter....

Show, you better not kill our Earnest Bot. Otherwise, I will personally steal Kang Seok's bazooka and hunt you down!

"No matter if this is Shi-kyung being a triple agent or not, that last image just kills me—him holding his gun out at Jae-ha like their first meeting."

Exactly, this show is so well played with all it's running theme, like skin care, jae ha shooting hang ah, Jae Ha's people vs Bong Gu lack of, etc etc. In fact their first bonding was over Shi Kyung shooting him, and Jae Ha deciding not to use his royalty status as revenge.

This episode is so well done yet again. For me even if Shi Kyung betrayed him, it's totally understandable in his compromised position. And it is time for Jae Ha to be put in danger for his high stakes war too.

I don't believe for a moment that SK would betray JH for several reasons:

1) It's out of character, and so far, our writers have done an excellent job with characterisation.

2) He doesn't have anything against JH. It's not like he's jealous of JH's power and position, or that they have a shared love interest. Moreover, JH was pretty decent in the way he treated his father. Other kings would have shamed him and denounced him publicly. Instead, JH shielded Eun Sn and made himself look like the bad guy.

3) JH approves of him. Doesn't think he's too lowly to associate with his sister. Even went to extent of arranging a rendevous for them.

4) He loves JS and has her love as well.

5) Neither JS nor his father is being kidnapped by BG, so he's not under a threat.

Therefore, I think we can all rest easy on that score. However, whether he lives or dies, that's another story.

But just from my experience (not real but simulated training), torture can just crush you completely. In the show they exhibit so many devices that Bon Bon used for torture, but it is unnecessary. Just tearing of your nails one by one using pliers will crumble the noblest of man.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree completely. The only weird thing for me is why, assuming that Jae-ha and Shi-kyung have been using their secret code to communicate what's really up, Jae-ha didn't share this information with Hang-ah. So far, he's been really good at letting her in on all of his plans and conspiring with her, so I don't get why this situation would be any different.

I'm sure answers to these questions and more will be given next week, though! Can't wait.

Many thanks, GF for your hard work and entertaining recaps.

Yet ANOTHER thing! Because apparently TK2H has replaced my need for sleep:

How heartbreaking was it when the rest of the WOC'ers were desperately searching for Hang-ah in the Chinese prison?! These tough-as-nails guys who don't even break a sweat in an interrogation room were literally falling over themselves, voices-cracking, eyes-brimming-with-tears, because they couldn't find their precious Hang-ah.

IKR! I totally felt their desperation. The find-HA scene was very very well executed. It was really hard to guess whether they'd find her or not, and when JH finally did, the gun shot...omg, heart attack. The actor who plays the NK soldier who fell in the prison is pretty good. As someone mentioned earlier, even the minor characters are fleshed out as much as possible, which makes for very rich scenes.

Yesterday, it was the women. Today, it was the men. This episode showcased the acting prowess of the men of K2H! Brilliant! The plot just zoomed like a train on crack, just barreling through towards that massive cliffhanger. Oh. My. Gosh!

Episode 18 should come with a disclaimer: Watch at your own risk. Breathing might not be an option. There were a number of times I found myself gasping for air due to the intensity of the scenes. It’s so good!

There were a lot of note-worthy “pod” scenes that were powerful in a quiet way but my favorite was the scene between Eun Sr & the Queen Mother. When Eun Sr was asking the QM for her forgiveness, she just asked him if Jae Kang was happy at the end (since he was the last one to have seen him) and when he said yes, he was happy and smiling, she just said “Then that’s enough”. Those three words had me crying in buckets. For a parent to easily forgive the person who had a hand in your family’s devastation required enormous strength and benevolence. What a class act!

But LSG and JJS OWNED this episode. Molotov cocktails are no match.

Shi Kyung, you know I love you & the Princess, right? But is it possible to love you both even more? That kiss sequence was what I was waiting for this whole time. Squee to the E! I’m positive that if I squee some more, I’m gonna squeak! And how I love your bromantic faceoff with Lee Jae Ha. I love shouty Jae Ha but I love shouty Shi Kyung even better. I know you suffered a lot from the hands of Lucifer’s Apprentice but she didn’t break you, right? And you’re just playing mind games with them, right? You’re not really gonna betray your blood brother, right? JJS, you’re so good – I can’t tell if your Shi Kyung defected to the dark side or not.

Jae Ha, you deserve a Brother of the Year Award when you played cupid to Shi Kyung and Jae Shin. And that press conference? I felt so triumphant when you figured out that one damning piece of evidence against Bong Gu. But your rescuing Hang Ah was the one that truly got me in the heart. The pain and the devastation when you thought she was killed and the utter relief when she , in fact, wasn't was so tangible. I love your relationship!

But I'm gonna give a star sticker to Bong Gu just because he slapped Bon Bon during that scene with SK post torture. That was so satisfying. Now if he had punched her like he did Hang Ah, I'd have bought him a new bow tie. With the pitchfork print. I bet it will match well with his persona.

This show is my favourite drama of all time for sure.

I love the JH and HA reunion scene... my gosh, the shock on JH's face, the disbelief and the utter relief and tear when he realised that HA was only shot on the ankle... why so awesome LSG?

And HA, I so so love her. HJW is really owning this role as HA.

Don't shoot me, but I find JH and SK has more spark then SK and JS... the bromance is killing me.

Anyone miss Kang Seok in this episode? Why is he not with YB and DH in the rescue mission in the last 2 episodes?
Maybe he is really stuck at the customs... LOL.

And JJS' acting as SK in this ep is absolutely fantastic. Can really feel his horror during the torture and his fear for his father and JS when BG threatens him... and his inscrutible face at the end of the episode, we have no clue if he has turned to the dark side or not. It could be either way.
And credit to the writers for writing his role in this episode this way.

Again, this ep 18 made my heart race, my palms sweat, my tears flow. I live and breathe K2H... what will I do after next week?

About Ep 19, I firmly believe that SK will not turn on JH... HE WILL NOT. I don't know what's going on, but I fervently hope that this is something within JH (and SK's) plan.
Although HA seemed to want to go to JH, I hope that it will be JH and SK saving themselves... rather than HA to the rescue again, much as I love badass HA. I have hope after see the cliff spoiler picture... don't want to go into details in case I incur GF's wrath, but I didn't see HA in those pictures!

I think it will not end up like Moon-Sun because EarnestBot does not belong to the Love Triangle, haha.. In Moon-Sun the writer just feel lazy thinking for resolutions so why not just kill Yang Myung... its the easiest... In here, the writer is so hardworking working on every possibilities to make every character escape danger but obcourse not without suspense and near-death scenes. So, this must serve as a warning for ep.19..

Your recaps always enhance the squeal factor up at least 4 notches for me. And for that same reason, also why I cannot read them in the office.

'Quippy Comeback Bot' - LOVE IT.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who cried their eyes out on this ep...esp that part where the princess and shikyung were together...
i also loved that part where HangAh was in an embrace with our king...sooooooooooo emotional...
but most of all, don't we love all the bromances here?

i know that SK has no Bad bones in his body and will surely save the day, he's got to...we have a lot of emotional investment on him....

i can't wait for the last couple of episodes then we'd have to say farewell...

thank you!!!
