EPISODE 17 RECAP

Defeated and at the end of his rope, Jae-ha tells Shi-kyung to make the call – he will abdicate the throne to get Hang-ah and Mom back safely. Shi-kyung asks him to consult his staff, but he’s made up his mind: “Call Bong-gu. He’s the king now.” Say it ain’t so!

Meanwhile Hostage Hang-ah agrees to try and convince Jae-ha to do the same, and Bong-gu sets her up on a video conference straight from the baddie’s lair. He warns her that the call can’t be traced, and keeps no less than three guns trained on her the entire time. He tells her to act as helpless as she can, to sell it. She glares.

Jae-ha braces himself, and Shi-kyung tells him to draw out the call for as long as he can. He answers the call and they both just look at each other for a long moment, with no words.

He finally asks if she’s okay, and if Mom’s okay, and Hang-ah tells him that they’re fine. He tells her not to do anything—he’ll take care of it all, and in fact it’s already done. “Let’s live comfortably from now on.”

Hang-ah wells up with tears, and then starts to cry, saying that she wants the same. “I want to live!” She wails into her handkerchief, as Bong-gu sits back, pleased as punch. She sniffles through her tears that Jae-ha is the only reason she’s survived, and then mentions the WOC…

“Do you remember what I said, about what kind of man I want?” That changes his face instantly, as he realizes that the weeping is an act. He remembers exactly what kind of man she said she wanted—one she could respect, who would win, fair and square.

Awww, yeah. She keeps going, as if taking a trip down memory lane. She says they won, didn’t they? And they have lots of other fond memories together, like spinning the globe and wondering where to send a present.

He remembers spinning the globe and wondering where to send Bong-gu’s gift. He thinks to himself: Is that where you are? I love that it’s not some complex code, but just stuff that only Jae-ha would understand.

Bong-gu senses something wrong, and calls out. Guns get cocked around her. Jae-ha asks what’s going on (he can only see her face), and she says that there’s no one, but adds that they can’t do whatever they want (basically she’s figured out that they can’t just kill them).

And then she turns to Bong-gu with daggers in her eyes, to say this was just an act. She turns back to Jae-ha, now screaming frantically, “Listen to me! If you resign like this, I will bite my own tongue and just DIE! You can’t resign…!”

The video feed gets cut in the middle of her cries, leaving Jae-ha shell-shocked and calling out her name over and over at his blank screen.

Shi-kyung and Dong-ha come running in, and Jae-ha gathers himself. “China. That’s where we sent Bong-gu’s present. She’s there.”

Bong-gu asks what she meant by the globe, and she hilariously wipes her tears and flips her hair as she leans back casually and asks if he doesn’t remember getting a present. But… why are you telling him this?

He asks if she told Jae-ha their location, and she breezes that she didn’t say anything that wasn’t true—he can’t kill them, not with the U.S. and China breathing down his neck. “And that’s why all you could do is play around with scissors at Mother! Did you enjoy playing hairdresser? Did it make you happy? Kim Bong-gu?”

Nice. It succeeds in getting under his skin. He lights up with rage, and then HE DECKS HER, with a punch to the face. Damn.

It knocks her sideways for a moment, but then she just stands up, even more defiant than before, like the hit just woke a beast. He says sure, he can’t kill her, but he can make her rot so that it doesn’t show.

He steps back to let his minions do the dirty work, but as soon as they attack, Hang-ah headlocks one and kicks the other down. She then yanks the sunglasses off of a henchman’s face, and in that moment I really really want her to just put them on and smile.

But she does something more drastic (and probably more practical), and snaps them in half, turning it into a shiv. And THEN, crazy girl raises the pointy end to her own jugular, as she calmly tells Bong-gu that she is special forces, and not to be fooled—she’s choosing not to die yet, but could at any moment.

She tells him to let her stay by Mother’s side, and she’ll behave. Haha. Dude, your hostage is giving orders. Methinks you’ve lost control of the situation.

He complies, though by the time she’s brought in to see Mom, she’s pretty bruised up. She puts on a smile and insists she’s fine, and then Mom surprises her by agreeing to escape. “Let’s try it. Let’s try anything.” Yay, Mom!

Jae-ha and Shi-kyung (along with Hang-ah’s father) plan the rescue mission. They try to get China’s cooperation, but Bong-gu counters that move with one phone call, after which China refuses to give aid or allow South Korean troops into their country without any hard evidence.

Jae-ha realizes that it won’t happen through official channels, and says that they’ll have to send in a team posing as tourists. As he says this in voiceover, we see Dong-ha arriving at the airport dressed in plain clothes.

Not-Shi-kyung (from the WOC team) is just behind him, and then Young-bae shows up just ahead. Yeeeesssssss! Bring it, Sniper Young-bae! I love that the goofy guy who gets picked on is really the deadliest in a live combat situation. As soon as he shows up, I feel like it’s in the bag.

I love the badass way they walk through the terminal without acknowledging each other’s presence. Sadly, no Kang-seok this time. Or maybe he got stuck in customs trying to bring a rocket launcher as his carry-on.

Meanwhile Hang-ah and Mom put their escape plan into motion. Mom drops a lamp to draw two guards inside, and then Hang-ah takes them down so fast that Mom just gapes. Hang-ah grabs a gun and they make a run for it.

She gets into a firefight before making it into the basement tunnels, and as she takes out one guard, another shoots her in the arm. They run and hide and run and hide until they make it through the tunnels and into the caves below the complex.

The army of minions run around aimlessly, while Bon Bon sits and thinks what she would do, and heads down into the caves…

The rescue team reaches the entrance to the caves, planning to take out the guards and make their way inside. Only more guards come running up to announce that the prisoners have escaped.

Dong-ha and Young-bae look at each other, and then decide they can’t let all those guys walk right in to block Hang-ah’s way out, so they just start shooting.

Hang-ah and Mom finally reach the end of the caves, but find their path blocked by a river. By now her arm is in bad shape, but she says she’ll cross first and find a rope or something for Mom.

But Mom says that Southern women are strong too, and that she won’t become a burden to her daughter-in-law. She walks right into the river and swims her way across. For some reason Hang-ah doesn’t follow right away, and for a moment it seems like maybe she can’t…

Bon Bon and her attack dogs come running, and they start to reach the edge of the caves. Hang-ah hears the dogs and THEN she jumps into the river and swims across to the other side.

I… really don’t understand why that river crossing was made to be so dramatic when both of them could make it across. Why didn’t you just swim together as soon as you got there? For dramatic weight? ‘Cause now it just seems silly.

The Rescue Rangers get pinned down, and Young-bae tells Dong-ha to go look for them while he holds the line. Dong-ha takes off running, calling out for Hang-ah and the queen mother.

Once they cross the river, Hang-ah and Mom start to hear Dong-ha’s voice. But at the same time, Mia is closing in on them. Hang-ah tells Mom not to think, and just look ahead and run.

Mom protests but she forces her to go alone. Mom takes off running, and then Hang-ah takes out her gun and fires to make her presence known, and then runs in the other direction. Okay, now THIS makes drama AND sense.

The diversion does the trick, and Hang-ah draws them into the woods. Mom runs for her life and reaches Dong-ha. Whew. She gasps for breath and tells him they need to find Hang-ah.

She runs deeper and deeper into the woods, straining from the pain in her arm. She tries to stay hidden, but a shot rings out and she falls down the side of a hill, buried under a mountain of leaves. Her hand isn’t moving.

Then we fade to white…

Jae-ha walks down the hall and reaches Mom’s room, where she’s being tended to by nurses and Jae-shin. He sits down next to her and takes her hand, as he says he’s sorry and that it was all his fault.

Mom shakes her head and then asks what they’ll do about Hang-ah. Holding back tears, Jae-ha tells her that they’ll find her, no matter what. Oh no, she’s still there, buried under all those leaves, bleeding to death? For how long??

Jae-ha meets with the prime minister and insists they have to do whatever it takes to find Hang-ah. The prime minister says that they’re already in a world of trouble for sneaking in to rescue the queen mother, and Jae-ha roars, grabbing him by the collar.

He tells him that this is his job, and threatens to out all his misdeeds to the people if he doesn’t do everything in his power to help find Hang-ah.

Meanwhile Bong-gu gets word that they’ve escaped, and that Hang-ah is still missing. A gun with her fingerprints on it was recovered in the woods, but she’s nowhere to be found. He makes another call to China.

Soldiers in the surrounding area stop local villagers to show them Hang-ah’s picture and ask if they’ve seen her. One villager says no, but once he gets past them, he looks around furtively and makes a call.

It turns out he’s a North Korean agent, and he reports to Hang-ah’s father who then relays the same to Jae-ha: that Hang-ah has been labeled a fugitive who escaped from North Korea into China. Basically that means Bong-gu has all of China looking to capture her as a fugitive.

Jae-ha sits with Shi-kyung as they go over their options. He’s down to one—attempting to prosecute Bong-gu in the International Criminal Court. But that’s still murky at best, since they don’t have solid evidence against him, when they do it’ll be all-out war, and Bong-gu could just as well go into hiding.

Shi-kyung suggests they call his father, who will have advice on how to deal with Club M. Jae-ha says they can’t, not yet, and Shi-kyung sighs, frustrated that he won’t explain why. Aw man, I totally forgot you don’t even know yet.

Jae-ha just orders him out of the room to avoid the subject entirely. Shi-kyung storms out, thinking over all the cryptic bits and pieces, like Bong-gu asking if he trusts his father, Dad saying it would all be over soon.

He realizes a way to bypass all the tight-lipped people and goes to the records room and flashes his top-level clearance card and asks for a file. Oh no. You’re gonna do it, aren’t you? Mrrrmph.

He sits down and pauses before opening the file. And yup, it’s Secretary Eun’s resignation letter. Damnit.

He opens it up and starts to read. His eyes grow wide and he has to close it after the first sentence, just to catch his breath. He braces himself and reads the rest, detailing his father’s crimes. And everything he thought he knew comes crashing down.

Jae-ha gets a stack of records to review, and then takes a call from Secretary Eun. He suggests prosecuting Bong-gu in the ICC, saying that he’ll testify as a witness. But Jae-ha says there’s no hard proof to back any of his claims—no recordings, just his word against Bong-gu’s. It’s not enough.

It’s then that Secretary Eun remembers Shi-kyung’s insistence that Jae-ha was an able king, perhaps now seeing the same. Jae-ha asks if he’s wrong, but Secretary Eun says he’s right.

As they talk, Jae-ha goes through the files on his desk, and grows pale when he sees the record of Shi-kyung’s recent library checkout. “Ajusshi, I think Shi-kyung found out…” Jae-ha says he’ll figure out where he went.

Shi-kyung drives in the rain, struggling to hold back his tears. Dad looks wistfully at the picture of the two of them smiling, and then grabs an umbrella to head outside. But as soon as he reaches the door, Shi-kyung is walking up to him, getting soaked in the pouring rain.

He stands there in the yard, resignation letter in hand, just getting rained on. (And in a great visual beat, Dad stands in the shadows, while Son stands in the light.)

Shi-kyung: “Is it true? Did you really do these things? You told me not to do anything to be ashamed of. That once you cross that line, you cross it completely. You told me to hold that line, Father.”

He starts to break down in sobs. “You built me up like that… and then…” He swallows back more tears. And then he screams furiously, “WHAT IS THIS?!”

Dad finally looks up at him, “You’re ashamed, aren’t you? Take a good look. This is your father’s true image.” He tells him that he spent his whole life wanting to leave a flawless legacy, and never once acknowledged his own faults, and this is what he became.

Dad tells him to forget what he said about becoming a person who isn’t ashamed. “Become a person who knows shame.” Shi-kyung cuts in, complaining through his tears that Dad is trying to lecture him till the end.

“You don’t have to say it. I already know. I’m plenty ashamed, right now!” Oof. I know Dad deserves it, but that still cuts deep. He says bitterly that he got a good final look at him, and thanks him for the burden he passed on. Dad watches him go, sinking to the ground in heartbreak.

WAAAAAAAAAAH. I can’t stop crying.

Jae-ha calls over and over again, but his phone is off, so he barks orders into the phone for people to search everywhere till they find him. Jae-shin comes up and asks if it’s Hang-ah, but he tells her that Shi-kyung is missing.

She doesn’t understand why, so he tells her about Secretary Eun.

Meanwhile Shi-kyung is processing it all, now realizing why Jae-ha was so harsh and secretive about his father, and what he did to protect him from the truth.

Dong-ha races in to tell Jae-ha that they found Shi-kyung. At the airport? Where do you think you’re going without your king?

Jae-ha sits him down and pretty much says the same thing, and Shi-kyung says he’s going to Bong-gu. WUH? Are you really in the best frame of mind right now to be a mole? You need hugs and maybe a broody shower, not a renegade mission to be a mole in the cookie shop!

Shi-kyung says this all with his eyes trained to the floor, and Jae-ha tells him to look at him. He tries to, but can’t even lift his head. Jae-ha: “What did you do wrong that you can’t look at me?! You’re you, and your father is your father!”

Shi-kyung says that he’s not doing this out of guilt. It’s because he’s the only one who can do it. He finally raises his head and tells Jae-ha, “Bong-gu is interested in me.” Bromantically?

He says that he’ll use that to join Bong-gu’s side, and when Jae-ha is ready to report him to the ICC, Shi-kyung will make sure he’s found and captured. All Jae-ha needs to do is gather the evidence.

It’s a good plan in theory, but I selfishly don’t want you two to be separated. Plus I don’t believe Shi-kyung’s it’s-not-my-guilt thing. That’s a load of crap.

At the same time, Jae-shin tells her therapist that she’s tired of everyone falling victim to this man—Hang-ah, her brothers, now Shi-kyung. She insists that her memories be recovered, no matter what the method. Urg with the deus ex machina memory voodoo. I thought we already decided you’d try everything WEEKS AGO.

Back to Jae-ha, who says no to Shi-kyung’s plan. Phew. He says that they can’t stoop to get into a dogfight with Bong-gu, with the monarchy at stake. Shi-kyung argues that that’s why he has to be sent in, and Jae-ha just rings the buzzer.

Dong-ha comes in, and Jae-ha orders him to put Shi-kyung under 24-hour surveillance. HA. Shi-kyung protests, and Jae-ha turns to him angrily, “Your guilt? Hang-ah is missing! I’M the one on the verge of losing my mind! But even still, as the king, I’m trying my hardest to stay calm and find the best way to capture Kim Bong-gu. But what are you?”

Dong-ha interrupts to say that they’ve been getting calls from the palace. “The princess…” Shi-kyung looks over with alarm. Well that oughtta put a plug in your molehill.

They race to the palace, where Mom asks them to stop Jae-shin. She’s insisting on hypnosis, but the doctor warned that she could end up worse. Shi-kyung panics, “You have to stop her!”

Jae-ha goes in alone and orders everyone else out. He tells her that it won’t help, but she says she’s been thinking about it for a long time. “I want to become a useful person now.”

He sighs, realizing that her mind’s made up, and says that Shi-kyung is outside—won’t it help if he comes in? She tells him to keep him away. “My memories are surely like monsters. I don’t want to show that to Eun Shi-kyung.”

So Shi-kyung is left pacing outside, as Jae-ha keeps watch over the proceedings. She gets put under and led through her memories, to that day she walked into the villa in Anmyundo.

She remembers being found and captured by Mia, which we already know. But then we start to delve a little deeper. Now we see what happened in the interim before her jump off the cliff.

While they hold her captive inside, Mia calls Bong-gu for instruction on what to do with this unexpected turn. She then puts the phone to Jae-shin’s ear, and Bong-gu speaks to her directly.

She asks what he wants, and he tells to take what’s in the box next to her and sprinkle it in the fireplace. “Let’s send him peacefully, your brother.” She resists, trembling in fear, and Bong-gu warns her that getting shot in the head is a messy ordeal.

Her skull will split, there’ll be blood everywhere, and then they’ll have to clean it up, which would be super annoying. Ha. Bong-gu is most effectively creepy in this murder-is-so-casual mode. “And then where would I cure that annoyance?”

And then he puts the phone to his stereo, and plays “Ride of the Valkyries,” as he mentions that the Nazis played this song while they gassed people. And he wouldn’t want to have to do that to her.

The minions drag her, kicking and screaming, over to the furnace. Mia takes her hand, forcing her to spread the coal dust with her own hand. She fights it, crying and scrambling to get away, but they bring her back over and over, with the gun to her head.

They tell her to do it if she wants to live, and she has a momentary flashback to a happy memory with Jae-kang. And then in the end, she gives in, and opens her hand.

Oh shit. Now we know why she suppressed it—it was her crippling guilt. That’s just more horrifying than I ever expected.

The realization of that moment jars her awake. She comes to, murmuring, “I killed him. I killed him.” Her panic starts to grow, “So that I could live. It was me! I killed him!”

Jae-ha runs to her side and tells her it’s okay, but she loses control, kicking and screaming at the top of her lungs. Shi-kyung and Mom hear her screams and feel helpless to do anything.

Finally Jae-ha comes out, eyes bloodshot and terrified. Shi-kyung goes inside to find her sedated, her wrists red from the straps used to hold her down, her arms cut up from trying to restrain her.

He sits down beside her, crying silently as he holds her hand. He covers his mouth to drown out the sobs, and reaches out to touch her face. His silent crying is killing me.

Jae-ha sits down with Mom, still in a daze. He says that Bong-gu had it worked out from the beginning, and when Jae-shin walked in on his plan, he made it so that even if she were to remember what happened, they would still lose her.

“That’s why I have to fight Bong-gu now. He was nothing so I tried to ignore him. But I don’t think that’s right. Because he really is nothing, I think I have to fight him. I have to fight him head-on so that the monarchy, this country’s honor, and I… can live.”

And then somewhere in China, Hang-ah stumbles out of the woods. She’s limping and her arm is still bleeding, but she makes it out onto the road, and hides out of sight when two officers come her way.

Jae-ha: “That way we’ll live. And I WILL see Hang-ah again.”

COMMENTS

I’m so grateful for a drama that can manage a couple’s separation without the noble idiocy trope—the odds are stacked against them and they’re racing towards each other, which is exactly what we want to see. I would’ve liked to see some more of Hang-ah, since being separated doesn’t mean she has to be absent from the episode. Being with her as she struggles for her life seems pretty important to me, so I feel a little shortchanged on that front. But knowing this show, there will be plenty of hardship to come.

Jae-shin’s amnesia was truthfully driving me bonkers—not her, so much as how long the story has been delaying that one single revelation, hinging it all on The Horrible Memory That Will Save All. But once revealed, the truth was a great twist. It was just horrifying enough, if that makes sense. Because being made to wait so long for anything less would’ve felt like a copout. But forcing her hand and making her choose between her own life and her brother’s…it’s no wonder that her debilitating guilt drove her to bury it so deep. I love how dark that conflict is for her, and now I can stop resenting the prolonged plot device part of her character and just root for her to face her guilt and recover. And judging by the way Shi-kyung cries by her side at the end, being needed in that way will probably be the thing to break past his barriers with her. Now it won’t matter if he was scared to end up a plaything, because she’ll need him more and he’ll be there for her.

Shi-kyung killed me twice over in this episode. I should’ve known he would somehow adopt his father’s guilt onto himself, as if things weren’t already bad enough. But I love that Jae-ha turns the tables and finally saves him for once, even if the only way to stop him from running headlong into the fire is to turn the royal guard into a royal prisoner. But he needed to be saved. And he needed to be told that he didn’t do anything wrong.

The fallout with Dad was so heartbreaking. I know that someone like Shi-kyung is completely unrealistic—no one can be that innocent, that un-jaded by the world. But I loved what he was, and it killed me to watch his idealistic view of the world shatter in that moment. The way he looked up at Dad, but this is what you said, like it doesn’t compute that someone would say one thing and do another? *whimper*

At least while so many chips are down, Jae-ha has turned the ship around in the course of the episode, since he ended the last one ready to give up everything, and ends this episode ready for a fight. I would’ve liked a punchier ending, perhaps just a reference to a more solid plan of attack, because I’d argue that you’re already in the fight. The point is how are you going to WIN it.

At least Hang-ah’s reminder of what kind of man she wants him to be is enough to jolt him back from the brink. It actually reminds me of their 60km hike (still my favorite of this show’s metaphors). When he’s tired and scared and asking why me, she’s the one to give him the strength to go on. But the journey is still his to take. She can’t carry him—she doesn’t want to, and it’s meaningless if she does, since Jae-ha is the one who has to cross the finish line. All she can do is walk beside him, for as long as he’s going to walk. That insistence of hers that he be a man she can respect, one who wins fair and square—it’s the same. What makes her the hero in my book isn’t that she’s a badass fighter (though it’s so awesome that she is) but that their relationship isn’t about saving and being saved – they give each other the strength to keep running.

Awesome episode!!!!!

Writers, you are twisted but brilliant at the same time. I would never in a million years thought that JS's repressed memories were SO HEARTBREAKING. How do you move on from that?!

When JH yells at SK and says "Hang-ah is missing! I’M the one on the verge of losing my mind! But even still, as the king, I’m trying my hardest to stay calm and find the best way to capture Kim Bong-gu. But what are you?” , that's exactly how I was thinking too. I wanted to scream at them and say "Come on people!! We gotta get HA back and kick some BG's ass!!!

Thank you GF for your wonderful recap. You really do have a talent with words that I so envy.

Thank you, GirlFriday! Argh, can't wait to see how this show manages to pull everything together. As you said, little loopholes, but the great revelations and dramatic moments more than make up for them. Such great acting from all as well, although I think Shi-kyung and Jae-shin really stole this episode.

PREVIEW SPOILER ALERT
That kiss Shi-kyung gives Jae-shin in ep 18 preview . . . does anyone else have a bad feeling about that? I mean, in the movies, whenever couples share intimate moments, you just know something bad's going to happen to one of them pretty soon. I still remember vividly when Goose's wife showed up in Top Gun (yes I'm that old) and I just *knew* that was it; sure enough, Goose died the next day. I'm hoping nothing will happen to either couple though! My heart won't take it!

I know! that's usually typical in k-dramas..intimacy, and then perhaps separation.
BUT i can't help but have that little kid in me believe that everyone has their happy ending.
I just think they went through so much..earnest and princess. So really i think this should be a well-deserved display of intimacy for once. Really is worth it after all that..
but.. thinking about it, Jae Shin might be crippled for the rest of her life, and earnest just found out his dad betrayed not only him but the royal family, and his entire country.
So REALLY, the smart thing for the writers to do is just have them find happiness together -- else i'll find somebody to punch.
Where's bong gu?

I'm hoping that their kiss would not be a sign of impending doom 'cause, frankly, it's about time. It's the 17th episode and no skinship for JS & SK yet? (the frisking by the Princess in an earlier episode doesn't count ;) We need fan service! LOL.

@Minea,

thanks for pointing that out - a kiss in kdrama is indeed an omen for "impending doom"...
as if to tease the viewers-- hey well give you a kiss so that you can replay them in between watching the difficult-to-watch scenes.

I feel the same way, it felt like it has been ages since the engagement kiss between JH and HA.

Now that SK and JS kissed - "somebody's gotta get-a hurt" (to borrow from comedian Russell Peters' famous line).
SK successfully inflitrated BG in epi 18.

I tuned late on ionair and i could not get in.... so i have to wait for tonight to watch epi 18.

The writers would be too evil to take Shi-kyung away from Jae-Shin. Not after what she's been through. I'm trusting them to keep him alive.

Creme de la Curve Ball -
Who wud have imagined that d writers wd build in a mental block in JS's psyche, in d way of her hand in JK's death? Wow , guess its a curve ball for many Drama professores here too . No wonder she repressed it to that depth !
50 m -1 lap swim -'I watch u swim ,ok?'
WHen shit hits her fur Grand Dame Lion Queen steps up & shows her loiness mettle . I'm so glad that she's not some clingy whimpering oldie that continues to wince & whine . I clapped when she jumped in for d 50 m swim !
You go mama ! Other than a very badly hurt arm , I was kinda puzzled why HA just stood there staring at Mum.
If mum ws gonna drown , proximity to her flailing arms wd be better than standing metres away on shore . if she hd jumped in earlier , maybe she wd hv not have to run away to distract the dog team . But that one predictable thing about this part...to be a distraction , in order to save mom.
Bonggu musnt Die !
Whaaat ?* scream all of you* Dun be mistaken .I want him to be in a rat-infested dungeon where baths are not allowed & in a face-brace so he cant scream , & have his nails plucked out & other important vital parts poked & pried at . I.HATE.HIM.TOO MUCH. He must be alive to be tortured .
He has spoiled 'Ride of Valkyrie' for me forever.
And that is Evil .
Crap-stick Prime Minister
He looks useless & helpless , All.The .Time .WTH !
& is a major insult to the institution of d PM's Office.
I think ,of all d casting , that one is the wrongest choice.
From preview , I'm Most concern about whether HA got hurt from d extra gunshot in d prison. That overshadowed the loveydoves scene for me. Sweet but I'm worried for my Kickass Cinderella Hangah .Pls be alright ,love.

I love your form of torture! Writers... please read this!
We really MUST have a competition for the best way to get rid of BG and his cronies. Send our suggestions to the writers and cast, and let them decide winner/winners.

Like I suggested in an earlier episode,
First Prize (Female) - dinner date with LSG
First prize (male) - dinner date with HJW

First runner up (F) - dinner date with JJS
Second runner up (M) - dinner date with LYJ

I felt all the emotions again while reading your great recap in the same way I did while following the live recaps at soompi. Whew... this drama is draining me...really. This masterpiece is awesomely, magnificently, suspensely, heartwarmingly brilliant. Hope am not exaggerating..it is really my first time watching this kind of k-drama. I don't know what other superlatives will describe this drama for me. Simply the best !

Do you guys think Hang-ah has a plan she isn't telling about or something. She took way too long looking at the Queen Mother swimming.
And my Lee Yoon Ji has always been a fantastic actor. Maybe now they will give her the lead of another fantastic drama. She is always a supportive actress but she always gets the spotlight in the end because she is that good. When will these directors get that. ^_^ GIVE LEE YOON JI A LEAD ROLE WITH JO JUNG SUK or MAKE THEM GO OUT That is even better in truth. XD

I love it! Really! Ha Ji Won my favorite Korean actress ever! I love her versatility. From cutesy, to bad-ass to comedy and drama, she can play all roles well. Lee Seung-gi is also a great revelation for his priceless acting here. I can feel his emotions even just from the pictures (been busy so, I'm just reading recaps this days and not watching). So thank you so much GF for this gratis recaps..for this I LOVE YOU SO MUCH girl!

I know we have 3 more episodes but I wanted to say this already:

I love how Hang Ah affecting Jae Ha's life. Jae Ha almost gave up the throne but Hang Ah words made him think twice...he must become a man who meet Hang Ah's expectation first before they can live comfortably.

I feel so bad for Jae Shin and Shi Kyung...both of them have reached the turning point of their life. I believe Shi Kyung will recover faster because his situation is not as bad as Jae Shin...but Jae Shin? I'm terrified for her :(

Exorcising her (Jae Shin) demons, perhaps it is the beginning of her healing. She will realize that SK is there for her, her family does not blame her, she isn't guilty and she will learn to forgive herself.
She comes from a family of strong women- she'll come through beautifully!
Yeah all the women here are really strong - even the villain role was acted good - that's why we all hate her (Bon Bon character) .
2012 is amazing for kdramas... and we are still in the second quarter.... I hope come awards season that K2H will remain in the mind of voters or whoever selects the winners. I wonder if international fans can vote?
No matter what drama comes along - to me TK2H wins in all categories....drama of the year, nay drama of the decade.

This episode is daebak!!
1. Hang-ah's flipping hair scene is awesome. She looks badass with the least care towards Bong-Gu. If the queen mother is not there with her, I'm sure she had already kicked the villain up to the roof
2. The relevation of Jae-Shin's emotional scar. That is one twist that I had never expected. When she called her oppa in desperation like that, it was too painful to watch (My tears. They're gone like there's no tomorrow)
3. Shi-kyung's silent sobs. I dont even have words to describe that

Hang-ah and Jae-Ha better be together again tonite (I dont know what I should do if I have to wait another week). Bring it, drama!!

"WAAAAAAAAAAH. I can’t stop crying."

MEEEEE TOOOOOOOO, GF !! ):

It doesn't help too that dramabeans has a song of the day: PAINFUL LOVE from the OST. (which totally captures this episode)

I was crying earlier watching it raw, then again from viki w/subs this time and then when i started reading this while playing the song . BAWLING my eyes right now.
I think my coworkers are going to ask me tomorrow if i have allergies or what due to large, red puffy eyes because I suspect it's not stopping guessing from the ep.18 preview. :((((

mierda! hang ah with a scarf tied through her teeth..... WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?!!!..... I really hope our king finds her in that detention center.

our second leads are simply no words.... no words at all. both of them had me drained!!
these two needs a drama of their own!! awesome actors.
Wow, my mouth was agaped just watching Jae Shin. AMAZING delivery there.

GF, i have to agree on the cave scene. she should have swam with her. those precious time that she stared dumbfounded after the queen mother would probably have bought them time and they might have not split up at all...... but then of course silly me ... it's a drama after all.
but in spite of that, i actually loved this scene because it just shows you how our females here are seriously kickass!!!

on a lighter note:
if you guys watched this in viki.. you could actually read the live comments too.
which really made me laugh. oh whoever commented are so funny.
one of the comments says "you're head is going on?" LOOOLL!! this was the scene when queen mother broke the lamp and one of the guards came in with a really thick accent saying "what the hell is going on?" he actually sounded "you're head is going on" LOOOLL.

then someone commented that bon bon looks like martina from eatyourkimchi. i burst out laughing!!!
if you're curious to who she is, just check out their youtube channel eatyourkimchi.. canadian expats living in korea. hmmmm, maybe if martina slims down. she might be a sister to bon bon. LOL!

i know, i know. hope this lightens up some of your moods. this episode IS GRIM!! and ep. 18 GRIMMER?!!! awww!!!
8 more hours to go.

the first great reveal , jae shin's memory (although i already guessed that from earlier on) is finally out. now, i really want to know BONG GU'S motives!
i'm still not getting what he really wants or maybe he really is plain PSYCHO!!!

ok guys, like i said it's going to be a tsunami for this episode i think the next one just might be the end of the world. LOL!!! sorry, for being overly dramatic. can't help it!

LOVE your comments. Too funny.

As for Bong-gu's motives for forcing Jae-shin to cause her brother's death, I believe he did this so that Jae-kang's death could not in any way be pinned on him. There's no way Jae-shin can go public with the information about Jae-kang's death without implicating herself in the process. And even if she DID try this, how would the public react to find that their princess was ultimately responsible for murdering her brother? It would be an absolute disaster for the royal family. It was actually a genius tactical move on Bong-gu's part, because now Jae-shin's testimony is completely useless.

Fantastic recap as always. I especially loved this line: "What makes her the hero in my book isn’t that she’s a badass fighter (though it’s so awesome that she is) but that their relationship isn’t about saving and being saved – they give each other the strength to keep running."

So astute, and that perfectly sums up why we've all fallen head over heels for the Ah-Ha couple.

This show consistently outdoes itself. I was (yet again) holding my breath the entire episode. I actually haven't been bothered by Jae-shin's memory loss because it was so clearly treated as PTSD rather than generic dramatically convenient "amnesia," but NOTHING could've prepared me for the cause of her suppressed memory. So devastating, and so brilliant on every level--dramatically (because it explains/justifies her memory loss and subsequent behavior--not to mention her jumping off the cliff, it sets up her and Shi-kyung's relationship perfectly, and it is a BRILLIANT and totally evil move on Bong-gu's part).

Hang-ah was SO AWESOME in this episode. SO SO AWESOME. Even though we didn't get a lot of her, I was fist-pumping through every single scene of hers. Ha Ji-won is my HERO. There aren't enough caps locks in the world for me to convey my adoration of her acting, this role, and the writing that has given us such an amazing, complicated, brave-but-realistic character.

I LOVED the scenes we had between Jae-ha and Jae-shin. I LOVED that he didn't try to shield her from what was happening with Shi-kyung. I adore that these characters don't try to deceive each other (my 2nd least favorite kdrama trope, right after noble idiocy) to "protect" each other (aside from Jae-ha shielding Shi-kyung from his father's misdeeds, which I think was justified given the situation).

This episode did a phenomenal job of setting up Jae-ha's shift from wanting to give up to standing up and fighting. Yet again, the writers created a perfect confluence of events to justify Jae-ha's character growth--on its own, Hang-ah and the queen mother's disappearance only made Jae-ha go into "protector" mode. But now that Jae-ha can see the depth of Bong-gu's depravity (after Jae-shin's memory was revealed) and the extent of his conniving, Jae-ha realizes that the royal family, and Korea (hell, the entire world) will not be free until Bong-gu is destroyed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: this drama is a freakin symphony. All of the notes are coming together and it's just beautiful to watch.

I am going to be in mourning next Thursday, I swear. Not because I'm expecting a sad ending (though I'm sure there will be tears), but because I will be losing my weekly dose of mind crack. God, I love this show.

All of this!! Everything that you've said!

The writers (and everyone really) have done such a great job of pulling all these different threads together to give us something that feels organic and real.

Your analogy about it being a symphony is so spot on. There have been a couple of choices the show has made that have I questioned, but each time the writers have proven me wrong- they've shown such a steady hand, virtually everything has a place and a reason. So great. I can't stand it when a drama arbitrarily slaps on sources of conflict no one in the real world can identify with. This drama just gets sooo many things right. I'm praying it will get things right, until the end!

Thanks, Jen!

"I can’t stand it when a drama arbitrarily slaps on sources of conflict no one in the real world can identify with."
I agree completely. The best part of this drama, for me, is how organic the conflicts are. I think the writers' main weakness is how they handle the more action-y elements of the plot (things like the royal guards being completely ineffectual, why there wasn't a more active immediate investigation into the king's death when JK and his wife died, etc.) BUT these are just elements. The root conflicts are so strong and so compelling, and the characterizations are so truthful that I don't even care.

Another thing I've noticed is that I don't even worry about the direction the drama will take because the writers are so skillful. In other shows, I'll notice a glint in a character's eye and groan, "Oh no, PLEASE don't let that be the noble idiocy gleam in your eye. Please!!" In this show, though? I feel like we're in such good hands that (while I worry for our character's safety) I don't worry whether the last three episodes will be artfully done. I feel I can just sit back and enjoy the ride. Or, you know, sit back and analyze the ride to death and then step back again and analyze everyone else's analysis until the next ride--er, episode--comes out :).

Stellar performances from all the ladies but, for me, this episode was truly Jae Shin's. Waaaah! That repressed memory was truly a punch-in-the-gut-I-didn't-know-what-hit-me when it finally came out. No wonder it was embedded so deep. When she was struggling so hard to resist in sprinkling the coal fragments, you can see her eyes went dead the moment her hand opened. Oh my gosh! Her performance during the whole hypnosis treatment scene shot me so good, I'm still looking for the exit wound.

When they say that this show is gonna be dark, they didn't warn us it's gonna be pitch black. Like the soul of Kim Bong Gu. The Devil Incarnate himself. And when he punched Hang Ah, he just made me LIVID. Hell's bells, man! He's truly the poster boy for Everything-That-Went-Wrong-During-Childhood Psychopath. I finally understood the fear that the Princess feels whenever she hears the Ride of the Valkyries theme. It was the worst memory ever. Ya! Kim Bong Gu. You need to die the most painful death. If it were up to me, I'd put you through a woodchipper while you're alive and feed your fragmented self to the sharks. (OMG! did I say that aloud?)

And an echo to GF's observation about Eun Sr standing in the shadow and Shi Kyung in the light - Did you guys notice that before SK arrive, when Eun Sr was looking wistfully at the picture of them together, the photo was clearly showing both of them smiling? Then after their father-son confrontation, when Eun Sr. was sitting with his back towards the camera, the background blurred and focused on the picture frame but now, instead of the smiling faces, you can no longer discern the faces? I thought it was a great symbolism of the state of their relationship now after the truth came out. The writers keep on leaving us clues for our treasure hunt. What a treat!

So many great scenes in this episode! But that's all for now. I'm sure I'll be back later. (I know I can't stay away)

One more thing, because I am an addict:

I was SHOCKED (and actually super pleased) that Hang-ah was aware of the contents of Jae-ha's "gift" to Bong-gu. As morally ambiguous as Jae-ha's essentially setting Bong-gu's girlfriend up for death was, the fact that Hang-ah knew about it just hammers home the fact that this couple is a TEAM and that they don't shield each other from anything.

Please forgive me for my overuse of caps lock. This show drives me to extremes. I can't help it.

"the fact that Hang-ah knew about it just hammers home the fact that this couple is a TEAM and that they don’t shield each other from anything."

Omg, yes. this. I'm just going to believe she said that outloud just for audience's pleasure so we realize that she did know about jae ha's deceiving shenanigans all along -- which are, of course, "all for the name of the plan".
I LOVE that this just totally makes them seem like a couple that's encountered centuries of experience. Perhaps they were reincarnated lovers? Who knows. They've totally gotten past the whole jealously issues -- Hang Ah knows Jae Ha loves her and her only, and getting mad over this is something out of character for her. Shes so badass.

LOL this show got me using CAPS all over too.

Exactly. And I am amazed that so much meaningful memory the two have had during their all too short courtship.

Yes, yes, I know this is drama, and dramas should be concentrating things, extraction of essence, the lot. But how many drama OTP have lived through such intense, etched-on-the-heart experience? A proud man with all kinds of pretense crying he can't take it any more, just let him quit (being the royal!). An equally proud woman is heartbroken to admit the love of her life and gets ready to push the button that might kill him! My goodness, can you imagine the stories they will tell their grandchildren?!

Every episode of TK2H is like a bullet train. It's always made me breathless. Not just from the pace of how fast things are moving. But also from the highest intensity of human emotions. Just awesome!

So awesome.

Lee Yoon Ji took my breath away during the hypnosis scene, and she really should get more recognition for this drama. This has been her best role to date. Right now, I only hope Jae Shin can recover from her guilt and move on, although obviously this isn't going to be an easy feat.

Yup. I first saw her in Goong as a princess as well -- how ironic. And then saw her again in Dream High.
She seriously needs her own main role! When i saw her give such emotionally heartbreaking and performance i just could not help but fall in love! It's nice to see her showcase this side of her abilities.
I remember her mentioning she wants to go out with a 'bang' with this last drama while leaving her 20's(age) and entering the 30's, so surely she's working hard.

I am convinced that Lee Yoon Ji has a real acting talent. I am sure, it will not be long before she gets an acting award. If that happens, she will surely rise to stardom like HJW. HJW's first acting job, already gave her an acting award. Then her next and her next and so on and so on. She was catapulted to real fame as "actress" and "hallyu star" in Hwang Jin Yi although Damo and Bali also showcased her great acting ability. I hope Lee Yoon Ji gets noticed soon.

K2H really catapulted our K2H stars to the stratosphere.:) I said in a previous post that if they're Hallyu stars (or not yet), this show just made them into freakin' Super Novas.

Or they can date in real life. hee hee.

0

Required fields are marked *

To say that this episode was heartbreaking would be an understatement. I feel as though I've been wrung dry by this show.

Poor JS. How does one come back to something resembling a normal life, after experiencing something like that? How do you even begin to try? I've always wondered why she jumped off that cliff without any prodding from BB. Before, I thought she was just being ridiculously brave, and refusing to have BB dictate the manner of her death. Now I know it was much more than that. It was partly because she was brave and partly because she herself, wanted to die. All that guilt she must have been feeling... No wonder she wanted to forget and why she changed so much.

I hate to admit it, but KBG/JM is a f**cking genius! What he did to JS was so damn diabolical!!

Poor SK. It was painful watching his heart get broken by the father he had worshipped and admired his entire life. And then to find out soon after what JS, the woman he has feelings for, went through and know that his father had a hand in that, no matter how indirect... At that bedside scene with JS, he looked as if his heart has been shattered in a million tiny pieces.

Stellar performances by both Jo Jung-seok and Lee Yeon-ji. Fearless writing in this episode. Took me to places, emotionally and psychologically, that I didn't
expect it to go.

And may I say, HA and QD! Hooray to k-drama women who does not just sit around twiddling their thumbs
waiting to be saved, but has loads of courage and brains to boot, to actually try to save themselves!

As always, many thanks GF for another insightful recap.

I just realised that when JS jumped off the cliff, it was her way of telling BG and BB that she is wrestling back control of her destiny.
Earlier on, they had forced her to do something she didn't want to. So by jumping off the cliff, she was deciding on how she was going to die, on her terms. She wasn't going to let them kill her, as though she had no say.
By jumping off the cliff, she was also taking a chance that she might live, but more importantly, she decides how and without their 'help'!

i've been crying over jae shin & shi kyung scenes these past episodes but i truly bawled like crazy in this eps. this is just too cruel.
how is she going to continue to live after this? how is she going to recover? this is too painful.

i thought jae shin was going to be there for shi kyung to support and cheer him up when he found out about his father's bad deeds. just like how he always supported her after the accident. but then they gave us a twist like this.

it broke my heart when shi kyung entered her room he kept looking at the floor. he didn't dare to look up. and the way he finally dared himself to look at her, that was emotionally heartbreaking.

superb acting from jo jung suk & lee yoon ji. i really hope they give us a happy ending for these two. they deserve it truly. dun be so cruel to them drama god. this is too much already TT____TT

Maybe this is actually better for Shi Kyung. He has to get over his funk to help the woman he loves. He's the earnest hero with a heart of gold. And he'll tap into that to help his woman accept what happened and move on.

Ya know now knowing the full story of how Jae Kang died, I'm starting to see her jumping off the cliff differently. Like maybe it was more of a penance.

Thanks for the recap!

I just had a thought about JaeShin's Ordeal , when she was forced to put the coal in that killed Jae kang into the fireplace, she was struggling and doesnt want to lef the coal go, but when Bong Gu said that do you want to do it the messier way? A gun shot in their head blood all over? She had to choose between 2 evils, either way BG and his minions will kill JK and his wife, but the way of their death BG made her decide on it, gun shot int he head or send them peacefully in sleep? When I saw the flash back she had with JaeKang , and she finally opened her hands , I know right there and then that she chose the latter. They would've end up dead anyway but she choose the death that wont hurt them. That scene gave me goosebumps.

More thoughts:

-I thought it was really brave of the writers to undercut the overused "memory deus ex machina" plot device by making it so the memory itself was completely ineffectual against Bong-gu. The real purpose of the memory was not so Jae-ha could have concrete evidence against Bong-gu to use against him in court (as the royal family had hoped), but so that he could get a deeper understanding of just how dangerous Bong-gu is. Rather than providing a convenient plot device, Jae-shin's memory has served to catalyze the final leg on Jae-ha's journey to greatness.

-I hadn't thought about it before fangirl98 mentioned how fitting it was that Shi-kyung discovered his father’s misdeeds by reading about it in his dad’s own handwriting, but how fitting was it that Eun's cowardice ultimately destroyed his relationship with his son? He did finally step up and admit his misdeeds to Jae-ha, but the only way he could've salvaged his relationship with Shi-kyung would be to face him honestly and apologetically--in other words, with honor.

In contrast to our royal family, who tend to meet every challenge that faces them (if reluctantly), Eun was trying to run away from his own deeds to the very end. Truly heartbreaking to see a man so thoroughly dig his own grave and willfully isolate himself. It was also really interesting to me how obsolete Eun came across in this episode. Spending his days isolated in his old traditional Korean home--an ivory tower literally on a hilltop, not able to fess up or even apologize to his son for his misdeeds. Even Eun's previous strength--that he understood how M operates and could advice Jae-ha on how to tactically approach them--was woefully lacking, as he realized that Jae-ha was already three steps ahead of him. The actor who plays Eun deserves mad props for showing the heartbreaking complexity of his situation--he was able to convey both pride at the king that Jae-ha has become, and sorrow at his own misdeeds and his own ineffectual-ness.

Props to the writers for giving Eun just what he deserved (indeed, what he brought upon himself) but drawing his character so richly and with such detail that we couldn't help but feel our hearts break at his plight. Now that is good writing: to get an audience to cry for a person who's antagonized our beloved heros (both Jae-ha AND Shi-kyung), all the while portraying him bringing about his own destruction to the very end.

-Another little visual detail that I found interesting: I noticed that Eun was frequently framed in the darkness by the glass doorway in his home. This both established the self-imposed seclusion and darkness that he has found himself in, and also provided an interesting visual link to Bong-gu, who seems to literally live in a glass house and was framed by the glass windows in the establishing shots of his home.

-This isn't an analysis so much as an observation: I'm not sure if it was because I was more consciously watching the cinematography this time, but this episode was just visually GORGEOUS. From the motif of light and darkness, the exploration of glass and reflections, even the use of rain to punctuate the emotional scenes. Shot after shot was just stunning.

-I've been talking a lot about Eun, which has got me thinking...if anybody has to sacrifice himself in order to take down Bong-gu, I really hope it is Eun. This episode really highlighted how his cowardice has brought about his ruin, and I think at this point the only way to redeem himself in his son's eyes (and his own) would be for him to give himself up to protect the royal family and his son. In spite of all that he did, my heart couldn't help but break during his scene with his son. So incredibly sad.

May I just say how much I loved your analysis of Eun Kyu-tae's character. I thought it was spot-on. Towards the end of that scene, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him.

Thank you! When I think back to how much I despised Eun Kyu-tae back in the earlier episodes, I can't help but be in awe of the depth and quality of the Hong sisters' writing. They have managed to make Eun completely sympathetic (and this is what is really impressive) without actually changing the core nature of his character. He still has a tendency to be cowardly, to lecture when he should be groveling, to flee from his own responsibility...but we see all that and we STILL feel sorry for the man. And that? Is truly brilliant writing.

You know what is more pitiful? I despised the bugger because he was partly responsible for the loss of Hang Ah & Jae Ha's unborn child. This episode saw him receiving his retribution with the loss of his own child. Poetic justice made even more tragic by the fact it was created with his own hands.

@rearwindow - agree with you, and yes i have a feeling if anyone should die, it would be senior Eun, not junior. He is a flawed character but his redemption would be to die by taking Bong Gu with him. At least then, in the eyes of his earnest son, he will still be a father.

However, if SK dies, (not that I want him too), it would be the perfect penance for Sec Eun. Just a thought.

I suppose, but to be honest, I don't want Eun to suffer anymore because now I find myself actually caring for him. I can see that he is a weak man, and that he is in a hell of his own making. He has lost pretty much everything that meant anything to him--his position, his son. He is a shell of a man. I would also have issues with Shi-kyung's (hypothetical) death being used to repent for his father's sins.

Something that I love about this drama is that the characters are not held responsible for things that they are "associated" with but that they did not do. Jae-ha's "are you your father? what did you do to feel guilty for?!" tugged at my heartstrings because it was SO refreshing to see our lead have such a nuanced understanding of what his friend was thinking and feeling, and be able to separate Shi-kyung's deeds from those of his father.

I am even more impressed when I think of all the dramas that manufacture angst because somebody's love interest's father killed their own father's puppy (or something to that effect). It just speaks to Jae-ha's maturity (and, again, to the skill of the writers) that he is both wise and fair, and believes in the good of those around him until proven explicitly wrong. The same goes for Jae-ha's response to Jae-shin's (literal) involvement with their brother & sister-in-law's death. Obviously no one can fault her for what she did, as she had no choice...but I loved that his first reaction to the discovery was to comfort her and to worry about how much of a burden this must be on her...when I'm sure he must've been emotionally shaken to say the least.

"How did the Chief Secretary become someone so pitiable?"

I know, right? When I think back to just a few episodes ago at how much I despised Secretary Eun, I could never have predicted then that I would feel such pity for him now. He hasn't redeemed himself, but he has become a truly sympathetic character. Such great writing to make us feel so much for a man who we hated thoroughly earlier.

I always love your take on the characters and situations in a given episode. I love that your thoughts are not only spot on but coherent and clear that it makes me nod in agreement when i "read" your thoughts. *two thumbs way up*

and what an in-depth analysis of Eun Kyu Tae! it's true that when he was walking the dark path, I couldn't care less about him but from the time that he owned up on his misdeeds, I can't help but hope that he will be instrumental in ending the madness that is Kim Bong Gu. I like your idea that if anyone needs to die at the end, it would be him. His death would be his redemption. I know I'm gonna cry if that happens, though.

Aaw, thank you!! Let's hope we get a teary-eyed redemption scene from Eun where he is able to save the day. In a way, that would be perfectly fitting on Jae-ha's end, too. It's been a repeated theme that he is great because of the people around him, so to have Eun--the very man who betrayed Jae-ha in part because he did not believe in JH's ability--sacrifice himself for Jae-ha would be a perfect punctuation of that theme. It would show us that Jae-ha has won over even those who doubted him in the past, and that his strength truly depends on the people around him.

Lovely character analysis of Eun Kyu Tae. I've never outright hated him as some others have. I've always felt he was a very interestingly gray character. Rather, I feel equal parts disgust, disappointment, and pity for him. While he has started on the road to redemption with his confession letter and his frank talk with Shi Kyung, I do hope that he'll have a more defining moment before the end.

In the mean time, all my love for Shi Kyung as he struggles with his entire idealistic world being upended in one moment of realization.

Ugh, too many emotions about this drama!

Thank you! I'll be the first to admit, I definitely hated him for a stretch there. I think it was because he seemed both one-dimensional and weak to me. He was making these underhanded decisions, but I wasn't sure what his motivation was. Out of all the characters, his was the only one that I feared might just be in there to act as a convenient conflict-creating machine. His character has done a complete 180 for me, though, and I am SO glad that the Hong sisters proved me wrong.

im still watching K2H though :) tho bong gu drives me nuts, e scriptwriters drove me nuts for making old man eun such a meh character (for i love lee soon jae), bon bon drives me nuts with her looks, i can't relate to the main couple...

BUT! i love queen mama and jae kang and shi kyung bot and jae shin.

the training for WOC was fine, and then when it ended it kind of went meh, killing off jae kang made me :( tho it wasn't unexpected.

wat im trying to say is somehow K2H has been pretty predictable so far. i wasn't surprised at any turns of event until this ep. at last the villian IS villian-y enough.

yay! a comment i can openly disagree about.
Don't be offended -- i like disagreeing once in a while. calls for more interesting conversation.

To me, i think predictable is the last word on earth anyone could use for this drama.
While following this drama from beginning to end, i was continually gobsmacked by the way they handle their conflicts, and the way the story progresses.
There are just so darn many, but on memory, here's to name on few:
-I was surprised when Hang ah had her miscarriage.
-I was surprised when Jae Ha "shot" Hang ah after thinking she "betrayed" him.
-I was surprised when Bong gu was willing to kill his own father, even if he was a crazy lune.
-I was surprised princess dove off the cliff and ended up crippled.
-I was surprised at Jae Ha's and Hang Ah's kick ass
And most important, i am pleasantly surprised at the complexity and heart that these writers incorporate within all our characters and their relationships to one another.
If these prior happenings are all predictable to you, i must be a bit slow. :x
And maybe over-anxious.

But considering that your cup of tea is more time-traveling dramas, i can see why we differ.
It's alright! I appreciate that you voiced your opinion because i always like to expose more people to K2H.
To me, the conflicts started day 1.

When I first watched this episode, I was mesmerized by everybody's performance. My next observation (it's funny how this drama makes us all analyze every detail) was that JH was truly epic in this episode. He had so many crises to resolve, from HA and QM's hostage situation, to SK's emotional state, then to help JS's hypnosis trauma. We have to give him a lot of credit to be able to deal with all these different events happening in such a small interval of time one after another, with maturity, calmness, brains, guts.

Yes re: JH's epic-ness this episode. He didn't get as many emotional scenes as he has in the past, but here we saw him go from playing king to BEING king. And it was all the more impressive because he reached an impasse at every turn! Yet he held it together with patience and maturity. So inspiring.

Yes, my heart went out to poor JH in this episode. What got me most was the scene in which he was sitting by the Queen Mother and she asked him, "What about HA?"

At that moment, I almost wanted to shout at her, "You think he's forgotten about her?!"

It killed me that he had to comfort and reassure HER when he must have been devastated (and at the same time relieved) to know that only his mom was rescued.

He was holding so many hands, his mom, JS, SK and even Sec Eun when he needed the greatest comfort.

While listening to the tracks Greasy and Lazy on the OST, I 'm just so proud of how far our king has come.

TOTES agree. i was watching how he reacted, and glad to see him have so much composure in front of mom.
I would be reassured and absolutely happy seeing mom safe and sound back at the palace. But i know, i would have been in PAIN knowing hang ah was still out there somewhere.
But Jae Ha, who we all perceived would one day rise above even Jae Kang, truly became a KING in my eyes. He has become perfection in my eyes through his imperfections.

I really enjoyed this episode but spotted a couple of what seemed like glitches to me:

(1) QD and HA had to swim across the stream after exiting the cave but BB seemed to just walked across on the banks without having to get wet at all. Oh, and the dogs that we hear barking their heads off, when you look closely at them, they were not barking at all - it was just an audio effect!

(2) Earnest Bot drives through heavy rainfall and confronts father in the pouring rain until he's soaked to the skin. He drive off and stops to contemplate - everything from him to his car is bone dry!
