The King 2 Hearts: Episode 16

Awwww yeah! We’re back, baby. Now THIS is the show I know and love. Bring in da stakes, bring in da tears, and let’s get down to business. Betrayal hits like a ton of bricks, but it feels like being dusted with powdered sugar compared to what’s around the bend…

EPISODE 16 RECAP

Secretary Eun sneaks away from the engagement to take a call from Bong-gu’s minion. He offers a choice: Jae-ha abdicates the throne peacefully, or he will be removed by force. Otherwise, Shi-kyung gets told about his daddy’s extracurricular misdeeds.

Uh… I’m thinking the asking price is a little low there. Sigh. Minions. Though on the flipside, Eun is the man who sold out the last king’s whereabouts for an LP, so… even stevens?

Secretary Eun tells him to go ahead and tell Shi-kyung whatever he wants to, because he is no longer going to listen to any threats from the likes of them. Well now. Look who graduated from amoeba in the final stretch. Now, would it have killed you to grow this backbone like three fatal mistakes ago?

Minion takes that as Door Number Two, and drops his voice, “There will be blood,” like he’s been waiting his whole minion life to say that line. At the same moment, Jae-ha and Hang-ah toast (With red wine? Really?) and the clink sends her glass shattering. The Wine of Portent splatters on her white dress.

She frets, but he smiles and tells her that it’ll all make for lasting memories. They walk through the crowd and wave, and then some kind soul chants, “Kiss! Kiss!” and soon the whole crowd joins in.

Jae-ha side-eyes Hang-ah, and then spins to face her, and pulls her in for a kiss. Gah, the all-the-way-around-arm-wrapping just does me in.

The parents watch with embarrassed but adorably happy smiles.

That night, Secretary Eun calls Shi-kyung out for a chat. He asks how the Anmyundo investigation is going, and Shi-kyung says he’s going to be back on the case now that the engagement is over.

Dad lets out a long contemplative sigh, and starts to say it… but can’t quite get the words out. He just says that it’ll be over soon. Shi-kyung looks at him, confused.

Dad then goes to his office and writes his resignation. It details all of his nefarious exchanges with Club M, leaving nothing out. He takes one long look at his office of over thirty years, and then walks through the memorial hall of all the kings he’s served. He stops at Jae-kang’s portrait, “Do not forgive me, your majesty.” He bows down to the ground.

Jae-ha and Hang-ah discuss her picking up some of the queen mother’s charity events… while they get a couples massage? Ha. Okay, who’s brilliant idea was it to find some way to make Seung-gi’s cheeks look even more chipmunky? Hee.

Hang-ah suggests that maybe she could go to North Korea to do some of her charity work with a big smile, and Jae-ha tells her to have a good trip to the foreign country then. Heh.

But spa time gets cut short with an email from Club M. He goes to his desk to open it, and Hang-ah urges him to ignore it. He says it’s better to see what’s coming, even if it’s coming to explode all over them, which I’m all for. Let’s see it then.

He opens the email, filled with evidence that Secretary Eun sold out the Anmyundo location. Bollocks. HE’S JUST ABOUT TO TELL YOU HIMSELF! Aaaaaugh.

No matter how much I hate Cruella de Eun, I was all for him owning up to his crimes. He was so close! But I suppose you can’t expect the universe to be on your side if you wait till you’re backed into a corner before confessing.

The email has every bit of damning evidence – call logs between Eun and Bong-gu, Eun’s signature on clearing Bong-gu to enter the country, recordings of their phone calls.

Secretary Eun knocks on Jae-ha’s door and enters the office, prepared to hand in his resignation. But he walks in to hear a recording of the very call where he gave up the Anmyundo location.

Jae-ha just stares at him, blinking in disbelief. He finally asks blankly, “What is this?” Augh it kills me that he still wants ajusshi to say he didn’t do it. He asks if there was ever a time that he purposely conveyed lies between him and Hang-ah.

He says yes. Jae-ha asks, still disbelieving, if he was the one who changed Jae-shin’s entrance music at the conference. “You didn’t, right? You didn’t go that far, Ajusshi. Right?”

Still not raising his head, he says it’s true. Jae-ha looks up at him, stricken. He says that Anmyundo, he understands—it was a mistake, and he didn’t know who he was dealing with. But the rest… the rest…

Isn’t it just a twist of the knife to know that he would’ve been forgiven if he had come clean right away? But that’s the grave you dug for yourself, old man.

A tear streams down Jae-ha’s face as he continues to plead, “You were like family. Thirty years. Father chose you. Hyung trusted you. I leaned on you more than anyone. How could that Ajusshi…”

Ajusshi hands over his resignation, which just gets a scoff from Jae-ha. Quitting again? He says he’s not asking for forgiveness, and will take every punishment. Jae-ha makes it clear that he’ll be arrested and charged for his crimes.

Secretary Eun warns him to be careful of Club M, especially right now, and Jae-ha asks bitterly why—did he give them something else? He finally lets loose, screaming at the top of his lungs: “YOU ARE A TRAITOR!” Oof.

That’s what stings the most, of course, since he’s done all this while convincing himself that it was for the greater good. Jae-ha continues: “You committed high treason! Allowed foreign invasion! Aided and abetted an enemy of the state! YOU ARE A TRAITOR!”

Secretary Eun doesn’t deny any of it, and says he will accept the punishment for all his crimes. But he asks just one thing… Shi-kyung… Aaaauf. Don’t even get me started on the heartache you’re going to cause, old man.

He bows down to the ground on his hands and knees, and pleads with Jae-ha not to tell Shi-kyung (Well that’s just absurd—how will he be kept from finding out?). He says that Shi-kyung is an honest, upright man. He IS. And idealistic and hopeful too, and you’re about to fuck with that.

He says that he’ll tell Shi-kyung himself. Oh. Okay. At least you’re going to do that. Although I don’t see why you’re going to set yourself up for another circumstance exactly like this one by waiting. But then again, you’re not historically quick on the uptake.

The palace reels from the news in every corner. Shi-kyung comes to see Jae-ha and asks if it’s true that his father was dismissed. And despite his anger, Jae-ha keeps that promise to ajusshi—he pretends that he finally had enough of their personality differences and let him go.

Jae-ha says he’s old now and their paths are different. Shi-kyung argues for his father—that it’s different methods, not different paths, and that he served this monarchy for thirty years.

But Jae-ha cuts him off coldly, “He’s too old. He’s an old fogey. He smells foul and he’s stale.” Harsh words, but it effectively makes him the bad guy, and not Ajusshi.

Shi-kyung can’t believe the words coming out of his mouth. “Are you the king I know?” Jae-ha: “Why? Do you want to hit me?” And without hesitation, Shi-kyung answers, “Yes.” Omg, you two are gonna make me CRY. Stop it!

Jae-ha lets out a tightly-wound sigh, and tells Shi-kyung to take a vacation. He answers right away that he’ll be staying right by Jae-ha’s side (Thank goodness.) until he finds out exactly what happened between him and Dad. (Balls.)

Jae-ha yells after him, “Ya, Eun Shi-kyung!” but he storms out, having made up his mind. Thank goodness for your dogged trust, but I’m scared for you.

Hang-ah reads Secretary Eun’s letter of resignation. She says sympathetically that he must’ve had a hard time, and Jae-ha just agrees absently. She starts to make a case for forgiveness, but Jae-ha counters that Ajusshi used his trust against him, all this time.

Jae-ha: “I’m a person too. I need time.” Right? Hell, I still need time and I’ve known for weeks! She tells him to rest, and he says he’s got a million meetings to prep for, but she yanks the papers out of his hands and pats her lap.

She pulls him toward her and he lies down, head in her lap, and takes her hand. So sweet.

And then he wraps her hand tightly around him, in this gesture that kind of kills me—it’s the way a child tries to envelope himself in a mother’s arms for comfort, like it might be possible to make a monster-shielding blanket out of her embrace.

Hang-ah: “Are you scared?” Jae-ha: “Yes. Everything except you… I’m scared of. I don’t think I can trust people.” He shuts his eyes to stop the tears, and she leans on his shoulder.

Bong-gu sits at home, obsessively watching Jae-ha’s video letter for the millionth time, like the crazy stalker that he is. He even drunkenly answers, as if they’re having a conversation. HA. Anyway, he proceeds with The Plan.

Jae-shin is all gung-ho to scoop out her memories, but her therapist warns that she’s the one who locked them away, and forcing that back out could lead to panic. Yes, we’ve already been through the panic. Now it’s time to push through anyway, so get out your hypno-baubles, lady, and help a sister out!

She tries on her own to listen to “Ride of the Valkyries,” but it sends her reeling and she tears the headphones away. Shi-kyung comes by and she asks him not to resent oppa too much, because there must be a reason they don’t know about. Shi-kyung agrees, still trusting Jae-ha despite it all. Aw.

He asks if she’s not going to sing anymore, reminding her that she used to, all the time. She takes that as a cue to sing now, and he stammers awkwardly that he didn’t mean now. Ha. She tries to remember the song she first sang to him, but can’t recall it, so he helps her out.

He sings the first line, and his voice startles her, so she pretends not to know how the rest of it goes, and he ends up singing the first verse for her, as she plays along. She takes him downstairs where the acoustics are better and hands him a microphone, wanting to record him.

She says that if he does well she’ll debut him as a singer, and when he balks, she promises not as an idol. Heh. She asks if he wants to sing it as a duet then (Yes please!), but he refuses, and starts to walk out.

She asks if he hates her that much—she confessed her feelings, and she’s working so hard, but he won’t give her the time of day. He tells her that what she feels is curiosity and nothing more, because they’re so different.

He says that she’s right about him being no fun, and when she gets to know him, the shininess of the new toy will wear off, and she’ll be sick of him. She swears that’s not it, but he tells her to stop messing with him: “I don’t want to become a plaything.”

She says she’ll ask him one thing then: Is it because she’s disabled? He answers right away that it’s not that, he swears. She starts to cry as she supposes that even if it were, she couldn’t do anything about it.

She asks one final thing: She sang that song to him just once, so how did he remember it? Is he a genius? He says, voice trembling, that it’s because the princess sang it (aww), and walks out before she can ask any more questions.

Hang-ah heads to Somalia with the queen mother to do charity work, and Mom gives her a purse as a gift on the way. They get relocated to a different hotel because the place they had originally booked just got blown up in a terrorist attack. UM. Red flag, anyone?

Thankfully it’s enough of a red flag to send them back home in the morning, but they’re here for the night. The staffer heads down in the elevator, where she sees a woman with a strange tattoo…

Mom sighs that she really wanted to see one of the children who had barely made it last time, who lost his mother to tuberculosis.

Hang-ah says that her mother died of the same, because a penicillin shot cost as much as a kilogram of rice, and she could never afford it. She doesn’t say this with any heaviness—just matter-of-factly—adding that she and Dad moved to Pyongyang soon after, and there were plenty of vaccines.

Mom takes her hand and asks what kind of person her mother was. Hang-ah says she was so young so her memories are faded, but her mother was a translator, and would read her stories at night, like Gulliver’s Travels.

Mom says that Hyun-joo (Jae-kang’s wife) called her “mother,” and that here when a mother and daughter-in-law are close, they just become mom/daughter. She tells her to call her “mother” instead of “her majesty.” Aw.

Hang-ah lights up, and tries it out awkwardly. Mom laughs, “Minus the accent.” They hold hands and laugh.

But this is no time for laughter, because Mia and her band of assassins are already here, shooting their way down the hall. They take out the guards and knock on Mom’s door posing as room service.

But Mom’s no dummy—she would be escorted by secret service if everything was on the up and up, and she scrambles for the phone. But the lines have been cut. She runs to her cell phone, but before she can make a call, Mia’s standing right behind her with a smile.

One of the secret service manages with his last breath to pull the fire alarm, which sends a stampede through the lobby. It’s enough to make Hang-ah pause, and she comes out of the bathroom cautiously.

She comes out to find Mom sitting on the couch at gunpoint. Her eyes widen. But then I love how her look changes when another gun gets trained on her—she looks over at it like it’s a fly challenging her patience.

But clearly she can’t risk getting the queen mother killed in a hostage stand-off.

Shi-kyung wakes Jae-ha up in the middle of the night to deliver the bad news—both Hang-ah and Mom are missing. He tries calling her, to no avail. (I love that he’s saved her number as Hang-ahr-ie, turning her name into a homophone for “vase” but meaning “lovesick-for-Hang-ah.”)

Bon Bon pays her hired help, and then promptly shoots them in the back, for her hostages to see. Damn. Then they get loaded onto a plane.

Jae-ha gets briefed that there are no ransom demands, and the two accomplices have been killed. Shi-kyung says that another kidnapper was caught on film, but only from the back—she had a barcode tattoo.

He immediately remembers that detail from Shi-kyung’s investigation into Mia. Shi-kyung confirms that Club M is the likeliest suspect. Jae-ha realizes that Bong-gu is going after his people, one by one. And Bong-gu purposely ignores all his calls, wanting Jae-ha to fry a little longer.

Meanwhile Hang-ah and Mom get moved to one of Bong-gu’s lairs. Hang-ah eats diligently, and assures Mom that the food isn’t poisoned—if they wanted them dead, they’d be dead—and tells her that she has to do the same to keep up her strength if they’re going to escape. Nice.

But Mom is scared witless, and says that Hang-ah might be able to because she’s a soldier, but she’s too frightened to try. Hang-ah tells her they have to try something, anything, to help the king.

Bong-gu interrupts to make his grand entrance, and Hang-ah recognizes him right away. She puts out her hand, “Kim Bong-gu-shi.” Ha. I love it. He pretends not to be bothered by it and squarely ignores her, and she totally smirks.

He goes straight for Mom, asking her to join him for tea, and when Hang-ah objects, Mia hauls her away at gunpoint.

Hang-ah’s father has come down to help Jae-ha, and confirms the Club M suspicion. I’m so glad he’s here, if only so he can witness this next scene:

Jae-ha asks Shi-kyung if he’s still getting the runaround from Bong-gu. “Whatever it takes. You know, right? Tell them I’ll do everything. I can go there myself, or lie down and beg. I can do it.”

Dad looks up at him. Shi-kyung whispers a protest. Jae-ha: “It’s Hang-ah. Hang-ah and Mom. You know my mom. She won’t last.”

Mom is currently cowering in fear over tea with Bong-gu. He sits watching her for a while, and then calls her “mother,” like he really does think he and Jae-ha are friends.

He comes closer and says that she reminds him of his mom, though his mom abandoned him to run her bar, tossing him in boarding schools and expecting he’d grow up okay. But even Bong-gu knows that what he really craved was his mother’s love.

He says he really was a good kid, so she should feel sorry for him. Aw, Poor Widdle Psycho. There, there.

He gets to the heart of the matter: Mom should tell Jae-ha to give up the throne already. He oozes with compliments for how dignified she is, noting that his own mother was so different, so crude.

Finally Mom opens her mouth, “Crude? How can a child call his own mother crude?” Hahahaha. Are you in trouble now? Daebak. And it just gets better.

She totally chastises him like a child, for blaming his parents for his own flaws, for claming a rough childhood when most people who endure hardship are better for it. “I am Jae-kang-ie’s mom! The mother of the man you killed. Even if you paid for your crime and then knelt to beg for forgiveness, it would be lacking!”

But instead he’s holding her here, and for what—to use her as bait against Jae-ha? “Do I, does the royal family, seem that easy?” She stands up. Oooh nice. He stands up and sneers that he was trying to be nice, but she just blows up at him.

“Fine. Kill me. Go ahead and kill me. Kill me! Do you think my children will flinch at the likes of you?! I’M going to take revenge on you! For our Jae-kang, our Hyun-joo, our Jae-shin’s legs, our Hang-ah’s baby. Even if I fall into hell itself, I’m going to take you with me as I go!”

So. Badass. And then she HITS HIM, with her tiny mom fists. I LOVE IT.

She goes to town, letting loose a barrage of swears and insults, asking how his mother gave birth to such rotten trash like him and still ate seaweed soup, as she hits him over and over. See, Mom, you’re plenty strong. You just had to get in touch with your inner rage.

Jae-ha finally snaps that he can’t take it anymore, and decides to just storm over there himself. Shi-kyung pleads with him to stop—this is exactly what they want, for him to go crazy and out of control. He calms down and gives Shi-kyung ten more minutes to get him through to Bong-gu.

Secretary Eun has locked himself away at home, and hasn’t answered any of his son’s thousand calls. But he does see the text that Hang-ah and the queen mother have been kidnapped, and takes Jae-ha’s call.

Jae-ha says nothing—all he does is dial and then listen. But Secretary Eun humbly offers his advice: to use Bong-gu’s international influence against him. Basically if he alerts the U.S. and China of Bong-gu going off the deep end, it’ll cut him off from major powers, and he’ll have to back down. He advises that Jae-ha stay calm, cold, and rational, and act decisively.

Exposition Minion tells Bong-gu that Jae-ha’s gone through diplomatic channels and for some reason, the U.S. and China frown upon the kidnapping of royals. Who knew? Bong-gu sighs that Jae-ha’s gotten smart, and agrees to a meeting.

Jae-ha goes to see Bong-gu, who plays dumb about the whole kidnapping, even as Jae-ha offers to do whatever he asks if he just lets them go. He says he’ll postpone the wedding, and Bong-gu finally says that IF he had kidnapped them—purely hypothetically, of course—then a measly broken engagement wouldn’t be the right price, would it?

Jae-ha asks what would be. “Your resignation.” His eyes widen. Bong-gu blathers on about who would take his place then, ruling Jae-shin out in her condition, and mentioning a sixth cousin. “Isn’t politics not your kind of thing anyway? It’s dirty.”

He suggests with a smile that he should gather up his loved ones and go live on an island in comfort, and leave the politics to others. He walks off, leaving Jae-ha reeling.

Bong-gu walks out, smiling as he passes by Shi-kyung. Aw, it’s Cookies and his unrequited love. Shi-kyung runs in to check on Jae-ha, who spends the entire journey back in silence.

He washes his face and comes out of the bathroom to find Hang-ah just sitting there, waiting for him. The lighting changes as he comes upon her, so this has to be a dream. She comes closer, and they look at each other with such loving eyes, and he asks, “This is a dream, right?”

She cups his face in her hands, and he clasps onto her hands with tears in his eyes, hugging her in desperate relief.

But then he notices a strange expression on her face, and asks why. Hang-ah: “Take care to eat well. And don’t forget to exercise.” He starts to cry and asks what’s happening.

She just keeps going, “Every sadness is just for a time. Because it’ll all pass someday.” And then she takes his hand.

Suddenly Mom calls out for Hang-ah, and she goes to join her. He tries to hold on, but she pulls away from his grasp. And then he looks up and they’re gone.

He’s left screaming, “Mom! Hang-ah-ya! Mom! Hang-ah-ya!” it startles him awake in a cold sweat.

Bong-gu’s minion shows Hang-ah a video of Bon Bon playing bloodthirsty hairdresser with Mom, and tells her to persuade the king to comply with their demands.

Meanwhile Shi-kyung is trying to do the very opposite with a scared and desperate Jae-ha. He can’t abdicate the throne and play right into their hands! But Jae-ha’s last nerve has cracked, and he asks why not.

He breaks down, “What if they really kill Hang-ah and Mom? I’m not that strong a person.”

*whimper*

He says that he’s lasted this long on obstinate pride, but he can’t do it anymore. They’re going to die. “I didn’t even want to be king! Why do I have to hold onto this seat while Mom and Hang-ah die??”

Shi-kyung has no words to make it right. Jae-ha tells him he’s sorry, but he’s going to live comfortably now, intending to give it all up.

Hang-ah watches as Mia threatens Mom with all manner of torture, and finally caves. “I’ll convince the king… to resign.” Minion tells her he’ll set up the video, but Hang-ah turns to him with a scheming glint in her eye.

“I’ll do it in person. Don’t you think it’ll be more convincing face-to-face?”

COMMENTS

Yay for the return of life and death stakes and heroic moments for everyone. I just about lost it when Mom talked down to Bong-gu like a misbehaving child and then wailed on him with all her momness. It was So. Awesome.

Bong-gu really stepped it up as a villain in a big, big way, and I’m ecstatic about that, for the sake of the story. There’s been enough messing about and pulling hair and getting in little jabs on both sides. Time for the real fight.

And as much as Bong-gu has his fatal flaws, he really is brilliant as an adversary, because he’s managed to take away the one thing that gave Jae-ha his confidence—his trust in his people. Jae-ha taunts him with that one thing Bong-gu will never have, so he deals that blow to Secretary Eun. Which is really just aimed at Jae-ha, because it levels his sense of trust in his people. And then just when he clutches onto Hang-ah for dear life as the only person he can trust, Bong-gu yanks her away from his side.

I love that this episode is filled with shots of Jae-ha in the foreground with Shi-kyung standing behind him in the background. There’s no fanfare about it, but he’s just always there. It’s telling that of all people, it’s Shi-kyung he apologizes to, when he’s at the end of his rope and about to give up the throne. It’s like Shi-kyung’s trust is what gives that position any meaning. This episode had great moments for both couples—Shi-kyung’s accidental confession that he memorized every note of that song, and Jae-ha and Hang-ah getting to such a supportive, honest place—but it was the bromance that really did me in. When they had words over Dad and Jae-ha was trying to protect Shi-kyung by being the bad guy and Shi-kyung continued to trust him anyway? I kind of swooned. I can’t help it! They’re just so perfect for each other!

Jae-ha’s emotional progression just in this episode alone, ripped me up good and proper. When his betrayal turned to fear, and that fear multiplied turned to desperation and despair? It kills me that he’s ready to give it all up, but I know that his people won’t let him. Hang-ah will kick ass, and Shi-kyung will find the words. Right? RIGHT?

Thanks for the recap Girl Friday.
I never doubted that LSG was the right choice for the king in K2H drama, but his acting surpassed my expectations. His acting improved leaps and bound on every episode. LSG is not attractive at first glance but as the drama progressed, he became captivating and handsome.

I was always a fan of HJW. She always will do her best in every drama/movie project. HJW/LSG so far has entertained us and brought out all kinds of emotion from us in K2H drama...I'm looking forward for the next episodes, I wonder what surprizes are in store for us...

Bon Bon’s tattoo is a barcode which means she is a toy product, a toy for BG. She has no pride and only does what BG asks her to do. Where’s your dignity girl? She’s cold-blooded and insensible except when SK talked about her mom. What’s wrong with her mom?

Honestly, this episode scares the &^$% out of me.

I can see parallels between JH's breakdown now and his refusal to do the north Korean engagement earlier on. In both situations, he is pushed beyond his comfort zone, just that the stakes are wayyy higher now...but because he was pushed, he grew. I am really scared that the writers will go all the way and push him into a country-above-personal-feelings king just to reach the ultimate growth point. Right now he wants to abdicate but I can't see the series ending with him off the throne. So either something will make him stay, or I'm hoping that he will find a way to trick Bong Gu into thinking that he abdicated.

As for Bong Gu...I feel that death would be anti-climatic for him. He should be tried for his crimes, deported to Korea and handed to NK to work in a labor camp since he badly needs exercise. He could be that insane prisoner who scrawls "I am King" on the prison walls.

I want Bon Bon to drown in a vat of hot chocolate.

This is probably the only episode that did not make me laugh one bit. So intense.

Jae-ha's awesomeness knows no bounds! In addition to all THAT he knows how to treat his woman with stuff like (couple) massages that she didn't get to experience whilst growing up in North Korea.

Gotta love a man who knows his woman!!

And if she tries to go down on him, out comes Jae Shin and slaps the s**t out of her for trying to get her man. I can just imagine the scene and Jae Shin citing Hang Ah about HER MAN!!!!

Why you all be hating on chocolate like that? That's no way to treat chocolate! LOL.

I'm gonna get thrashed here but I thought Bon Bon's take out of the hotel was pretty cool. It was the most action in this episode we saw and I kinda dug it. I can't wait for Hang Ah to one-up her and thrash her silly.

It was scary good! And then to kill off the stupid natives was just so Bon Bon!

0

It WAS really cool! I actually really like Bon-Bon as a character. She's unhinged enough and interesting/creepy enough that I just love to hate her. And I cannot WAIT until she gets hers. (Preferably from Hang-ah's fists.) (Now I'm imagining Hang-ah taking her out like she took out the corrupt North Korean guard dressed as Tom. Ha Ji-won crushing Bon-Bon beneath her badass black boots? Is it wrong to fantasize about this?!)

0

@rearwindow

"And I cannot WAIT until she gets hers. (Preferably from Hang-ah’s fists.)"

I actually wanted Shi Kyung to face off with Bon Bon rather than Hang Ah. Just so he can unleash all his rage towards our Resident Chocoholic Psycho. I can still remember the scene where Bon Bon was taunting Shi Kyung about our Princess' worst night ever. Took all of his willpower not to punch her.

Shi Kyung vs Bon Bon - looking forward to that fight (if that's gonna happen). Earnest Bot Unleashed!

And when she's dying, SK would say "I'd never love you". *channeling @eina's comment #53.3.1.1 ("I have this feeling BonBon was struck by a Love at First Sight syndrome over our Earnest Bot!! hihi~")*

Oooh. Heartbreaaaaak!

0

I have this structured ending:
bong Gu Fled away with his helicopter (or private jet, you chose), but it crashed down in North Korea. He met the local....who Hang Ah describe to Jae Ha in marathon scene, you know, the ones who killed with hoe and fist. And yea...he killed by them..

I want his death that much. nonetheless

Brilliant beyond brilliant! But minus the nekked please! We should have a competition of the best way to get rid of BG, BB and the assistant. Then send it to the writers and get them to pick the best idea. Winner, if female, gets to go on date with LSG; if male with HJW. First runner up, female, date with JJS, and male, date with LYJ. Sounds good?

LOL at that!

Preview of ep 17 (eeps! only 4 episodes more! Otoke? Otoke?) gives me hope: JH and his staff (?) going through piles of documents looking for loopholes? Trust our smarty king to find a neat solution and dear HA co-ordinating with him on her end. Also, I don't think this will be as simple as a "throne vs. personal feelings" resolution, since Jae-ha gets his strength FROM the people. That's what makes him such a rich character. He can't be a noble idiot, because without the people around him, he is no better than Bong-gu. And there's certainly nothing noble about THAT. I honestly don't feel that the writers are leading us to that conclusion, though I've certainly been proven wrong in the past :).

You are right. She toned down a lot in this ep. All those piercing - gosh, give me the creeps. At least in this ep I did not feel nauseated just looking at her. I can't even begin to decide which particular scene in this episode I liked the most. I liked them all, not because they gave me warm fuzzies while watching them. Goodness knows there was very little of that in this episode. But because it felt like I was there, with the characters, feeling everything they were feeling. All that hurt, betrayal, fear, anger, desperation and despair. It all felt as if they were happening to me too. And this is me watching the episode raw, understanding only the general details of what was happening, but not the specifics since I don't understand the language. I swear at the end of the episode, I needed a hug and a reassurance that everything will turn out alright. Unfortunately, none of my friends share my obsession with this drama. They'll look at me funny if I try to explain what I wanted the hug for....

So many people have said this before but I'll say it again, the writers deserve praise for such well written characters, and all the actors deserves every praise we heap on them for selling their roles so well.

I just realised something. You know those balls of steel that JH used to cross the DMZ to get HA back a few episodes ago? I think he might just have inherited them from his mom, the QD. I was laughing and crying at the same time when QD started tearing into BG. He was probably expecting a fearful, cowering old woman. What he got instead was a tiny termagant promising vengeance. The look on his face was priceless!

But i've got to say my favorite saeguk will have to be the princesses man. It delivers on all grounds! The action, the romance.. the cute. I swear, i was on edge all times. The swift pacing was also very surprising. Rarely do i see swift pacing in saeguk land.

gosh is there anything this boy CANNOT do? (except bungee jump, haha?) and to complete all these, there has to be equal measures of talent and hard work. for that i totally salute the boy.

Ugh..don't let me start it.

I despise baeksang this year for the lack of awards TWDR received! HSK deserve that!

*ok that is OOT
I agree with You @ryuu99, for me Lee Jae Ha is the prove of improvement for Seung Gi, not great to compared to HSK, but definitely better than his before. As for Bong Gu, no matter how much I hate the character but I appreciate YJM to play that 'crazy role' neatly, until the point that I'm desiring to kick him once at least.

As for award, I hope all of them get it, who doubt their acting now??

Required fields are marked *

I did watch TWDR in fact and firmly believe that HSK was robbed at this year's awards ceremonies.
From a cerebral level, HSK was phenomenal. His Sejong was tortured, conflicted, vulnerable and while still being regal.

But, it might be the story line or the emotional connection I feel with the characters in the story, but my heart bleeds for LSG's Jae-ha. And when an actor can get visceral reactions from me, I am always in awe. (I'm one of those who NEVER cries, but there were a couple tears this episode).

Agree. I thought that HSK was excellent in TWDR.. his acting gave me shivers all over.
But DEFINITELY jae ha's character allows you to feel more for him.
And it hits you RIGHT in the gut. i think if we all watched both dramas we'd know that acting levels are completely different.. but emotional connection.. well, that's another story.

@ryuu99
I digress my friend, in terms of acting I'd give the award to Lee Sung Gi. Bong Gu (besides he is a veteran actor and LSG is just a rookie) deserves a supporting acting award too because he got great lines. But emoting-wise, LSG's face and eyes and voice did more. I can feel and understand the emotions from just watching LSG 's face even without the sound and not understanding Korean language - that's how powerful LSG's acting is in K2H esp in epi 16. You try watching Bong Gu's on mute without the dialogue and you won't feel the emotion. That's the difference.
The writers should get an award for this story too!
This is one drama I feel that should get an extra acting award for" best ensemble ". Do they give that award in Korea - In USA , I think they do , for the Emmy Awards

nah. the thing with Seunggi is that he gets the most screen time and his character the most progress that's why you feel that his character has come across the screen the most effective, but Bong-gu has been phenomenal. he had kept the same character all throughout the series, the character never progressed, or improved, but he is doing it like the character has come to life even without the character having growth or maturity for the past 15 episodes.
you have to understand, since episode 1 he has been megalomaniacal and his character has always been represented in a certain setting/mood. it wasn't like Jae Ha who goes around trying tons of things like military and then being a playboy and then being a king. the guy has been stuck with the same characters on screen all throughout the series.
particularly, there's something about Seunggi's yelling and weeping that's bothering me. everytime he yells i feel like he always cuts his sentences short. it's kinda weird, but whenever he yells/shouts i feel like he still has more to say after he finishes his lines. whenever he weeps (note: weep, as in uber-cry), he does that half-smile closed-mouth thingy that he's been doing ever since Shining Inheritance. other than that, he's been fantastic. it's like when you cry, there's two ways to do it 1) you cry silently like you're almost whispering while breathing and 2) you cry loudly, like you can hear your voice come out and groan. remember when Queen Mother cried inside the car as she was leaving the hospital, that's how you really weep. but Seunggi always cries like (1). it bothered me a little.

Don't quite agree with you. In fact, I feel that Bong Gu's role is easier to act. As you pointed out, his character is basically the same throughout. In fact, it's quite a 'fun' character to act, cause you can do anything, and it'll be considered ok, cause your character's looney anyway. Jae Ha's role however, is multifaceted. LSG has to show many different and at times complex emotions in different situations - playful with his hyung, arrogant in front of the NKs, sorrowful yet dignified when Hyung died, insouciant while fearful while dealing with BG, jealous yet indifferent when he thought that SK was interested in HA, just to name a few. I was a drama teacher, and I know that these emotions are difficult to portray. Playing crazy - not such a big deal.

0

@crazyahjummafan - totally agree with you dear. Jae ha's character has shown all kinds of emotions so far, and he's done a terrific job, considering his age. The fact that most of us are in awe of his performance in this episode proves how effective his portrayal is. But then again, people see things as they want to see them. As I've mentioned previously, I am overly biased because of my Seung-gi love. I'm just glad there are more people here who appreciate his acting.

0

and I must say, I am very happy to hear these from an expert like you

0

The actor for bong gu is a very good actor, that should not be questioned.
Seung gi probably needs some time before he can be considered better than his sunbae.
BUT let me just say this.
Like crazyahjummafan said, the difference between the two is that jae ha has had more chance to showcase many different sides. Such dynamic character allows us an immense and drastic change emotionally -- and that's exactly why we're so in awe with his performance.
No one is saying A is better than B.
Bong gu so far has only showed us a couple of his faces, and like you even said yourself, bong gu has been same throughout.
Static characters don't allow us for much change, so we all get used to seeing the crazy bong gu.
I'd like to one day just see where he's coming from and for him to stop the crazy act and bring in the vulnerable kid who still needs to grow up.
"particularly, there’s something about Seunggi’s yelling and weeping that’s bothering me. everytime he yells i feel like he always cuts his sentences short. it’s kinda weird, but whenever he yells/shouts i feel like he still has more to say after he finishes his lines"
Hm.. really? To me, there's such a realistic portrayal in the way he handles his emotional scenes.
Why? i think it's because when people are so angry and disturbed, they can't finish their sentences.. Which is what you mean by cutting his sentences short.
I guess it's just because that's also me in comparison. When i'm really disturbed and shouting, i notice myself cutting off the sentences short because you're so ready to burst. And then you can't find the words to say cause you're so flabbergasted.
I guess it really just comes down to taste with someone's acting.
For me, seung gi's acting is familiar, realistically aching, and to say the least: much IMPROVED.

0

Both JaeHa and Bong Gu characters were portrayed perfectly from both actors, one a rookie and one a veteran. They both deserve and award , however, there will be competition and I think LSG has an advantage because he was able to show and emote a whole gamut of emotions, whereas Bong gu is just plan crazy-loony character.
About the crying scene- how is it that when I watche Equator Man Uhm Tae Wong crying scene in Epi 15th - it did not stir me emotionally? whereas everytime LSG cries or weeps I always respond emotionally and my heart literally constricts and I can't breathe throughout his scenes? if that's not the power of acting- i don't know what it is. I am pretty fair in my analysis because I value excellence even though I had said that LSG made me fall for him in this K2H drama because of his acting - I think I really fell for Jae Ha as a character more and feel for him. I admit, I hate Bong Gu as well - so yeah the actor is good as well.

I am not Korean and one thing I have learned from watching variety shows and reading up on KPop culture is how much these artists work and I really admire that. Unlike Hollywood culture - its different - it is to each his own- that is why there are not too many boy bands or girl bands in hollywood unlike Korea. I can't believe that these band groups literally start when they are high school and live together 4 or more years to be trained and not allowed to date , leave their homes to pursue a singing career. It is really admirable and a testament to Korean culture that I haven't seen in any other people.
Hallyu is spreading globally and thanks to the hard work of these young artists.
It has only been in the past months that I realized and have become more aware of Hallyu invasion globally- because it has reached my home as well. My daughter, in fact is crazy about Big Bang. We watch Strong Hearts and 1N2D variety shows instead of American Idol show, Lol ,in my house and eating kimchi and going to Korean BBQ restaurants and planning to vacation in S Korea.
Oopps sorry, I digressed too far from the topic .....

0

@crazyahjummafan--as a director (and former/sometimes actor), I agree with you 100%. Playing a crazy-over-the-top-evil character is MUCH easier than playing a complex, multifaceted character like Jae-ha. The actor playing Bong-gu is doing a great job, but Lee Seung-gi is just knocking it out of the PARK with the range that he is exhibiting. One of the marks of a great actor in my experience is that they don't revel in emotion--emotion is secondary to what they're actually trying to accomplish. Seung-gi is able to convey his internal turmoil while simultaneously wholeheartedly pursuing his objective, which is just phenomenal. I find this is most noticeable in his scenes with Bong-gu, where it's clear from his eyes and his body language that he just wants to tear BG'S heart out and feed it to the wolves, but he affects an air of disinterest and even playfulness. Even Seung-gi's crying scenes are brilliant because the tears just fall in spite of him trying to hold it together. So incredible.

0

Oh yes, Lee Seung Gi is the man, man. He's gotta rake in some awards for this performance, or there will be an uprising.

And I so agree with the 2nd leads needing some kind of skinship. Or, maybe I'm the one who needs to see some kind of skinship, uniformship, whatever, but something. That singing, my dear man, SK - from perfect words and voice to calling the right chord to sing it in! - is a good thing to tide me over until some (more) couple closeness/tension arrives. I think her consoling him, perhaps, regarding his father's traitorous acts are in order. There, that can set the stage..

Heroine saving the day just tickles my fancy.

You gotta love to hate him. He's a flipping first rate psycho and you can't help but just want to watch him be all nutty. That whole dream sequence just about killed me. It just reinforced my love for HJW and LSG. They are doing an amazing job.

Mom was total win this episode!

Thank You for the recap!

Hi Noelle - sorry for hijacking your comment, but are you the person who asked about the Tree with Deep Roots DVD? If so, just wanted to tell you that the DVD set with both Eng and Chinese subs is available where I live (Singapore) 8-) don't know if that's any use to you!

Bonbon - Its not nice to wish for anyone to die .BUT birds are gonna sing & flowers bloom when someone finally crushes that toxic cookie to crumbles . I hope Hangha gets that satisfying pleasure .
Bonggu- I object to him saying that he was 'nice' when young. This volume of pure Evil can't never have a mustard seed of "nice' in his body. Never.
Queen Mom- The day she berated her 'only' son as 'trash' & delivered several verbal punches to JH , I knew mom just needed the proverbial straw to crack her back. ROAR Lion Queen ROAR! All mothers salute you for showing yr claws !
Eun Snr - I have a soft spot for oldies so, I felt a lil' sad that he allowed himself to be manipulated to such a disgraceful extent. Seeing him lay prone on the floor...Sigh.What a way to end 30 long tiring years political service.
SK- I totally understand his cautious stand off. There are much bigger problems at hand. There really wasn't time for revelations of love( cos that entails lotsa time off for kisses & assurances) & karaoke sessions. Later babe*flying kiss*.
HangAh - SHe's come a long way from ''you're not a woman" to " You're every woman " to JaeHa. She was some northern plywood JH wanted to kick aside & now, she's his main pillar of Strength . She deserves every little tight squeeze , every loveshot , every kiss she gets from a now , obviously lovestruck King. I suspect he & mom knows that she'd readily die for him & even for omoni .Rare find for a royal wife & D-I-L.
All softness & All hardness . An open book. She's quite an inspiration !
JaeHa or LSG- I'm looking at Jaeha & my eyes can't seem to blink & my mouth's agog !What happen to cutesy singer wannabe actor Seunggi boy? This here is a stellar performance , man! From any polished actor , its considered good . Plus , he's suddenly SO HOT ! Even when he's sad , he's hot. LSG , everyone's gonna be lining up for him for all kinds of reasons. For him to sing & act. To act. To sing & dance & act. Whatever.
Not to mention , gals & their mothers all waiting to proposition him . K2H has propelled LSG so much that , everyone who expected his run- of- the- mill acting is now shocked into a higher level of awareness .He's SO GOOD here in this episode. SO darn DAEBAaaAK.
Someone told me this morning, she dsn't watch K2H cos LSG isn't good looking or exhibit gd acting. Well, its definitely HER major KDrama Loss . We are so lucky to witness his real breakout role . Yes, I am.

That's her loss by the way, just wait, this drama has proven to us this far. We love pretty face, but it's a big loss to consider drama just from face!

with this brilliancy of acting, I can't even seung Gi as seung gi, I see him as jae Ha, Lee |Jae ha, the 4th King of South Korea Monarchy

I've got to be honest, I don't really get this pretty face business- not wanting to watch someone because I don't consider them attractive is a really weird notion to me. Untalented, I can understand, not being pretty though...?

There's a whole bunch of western actors who aren't really beautiful or handsome per se, but they're widely considered sexy/attractive because of the presence they bring to the screen. I'm a sucker for someone who commands screen presence (admittedly I'm not to be trusted, I was obsessed with DeNiro for ages after watching Taxi Driver).

Pretty to look at definitely helps, I agree mtoh, but personally pretty is sometimes really boring too.

I’m a sucker for someone who commands screen presence.

ME TOO!! and yes, i never thought he was HOT before this and i can't help but be happy for him and smiling looking at him grow per episode.
it might be because of how the character evolving was wonderfully written but the way he fleshed out and made this character and feel so palpably alive on the screen is purely a joy to watch and i'll fondly remember this drama.

go seung gi. :)
it feels like having a good friend you are rooting for to win or be successful in anything :)

0

As shallow as it may sound, I started watching Kdramas because the guy in Sweet Spy was so good looking I became a school girl again going gaga over him. Unfortunately, his acting waned horribly. His good looks just could not override the fact that his acting lacked so much (at least then..he's gotten better since).

Lee Seung Gi, to me, is not drop dead gorgeous, but his acting and, as you mentioned, screen presence just propelled him into the HOTNESS Hallmark of Fame. Oh my, Mr. Lee, keep this up and I'm gonna have to buy me a "I Love Lee Seung Gi" shirt, send goodies to the TK2H crew, and engage in every other activity an adoring fan engages in.

0

Aaah, the look talk again! Have to agree with you....do not understand it at all!! Even the pretty won't stop me from abandoning dramas these days. In my two years of K-drama watching I may have watched around 15-20 drama from start-to-finish.

I totally hopped onto the Seung-gi train quite late (Feb 2012). I had watched BL in its entirety and thought SG to be quite charming. Fwd to Feb 2012 when I decided that I'd give 1n2d a go. I just ADORED this boy! He has this uncanny ability to connect with his viewers.

Recently, finished watching MGIAG and the second male lead was unimaginably 'too pretty' but I didn't even care for a moment for his acting or character. If you cannot move me with your art then that's that!!

In an entertainment industry that is infamous for conforming to ideals vis-a-vis looks one has to applaud this boy for having 'something' in the least for being soo famous (aside from being critically lauded for his work) & loved (across generations in Korea) in different professions (whether it be singing, emceeing, acting).

0

Agreed. THANK YOU.
i also have some friends who complain first that the actor/actresses aren't that great looking.
For me, storyline, chemistry is more important. I wouldn't mind if they were not eye candy but had wonderful chemistry.

I always prefer the abilities/decent looks over the pretty face/decent acting.

Seung gi actually in my mind has the whole package, perhaps because i've seen all the sides he's given us in mgig and bl and now K2h..
So it's just pretty much daebak.

0

Totally agreed. I also was obsessed with DeNiro for the work he did in the 80's! So freakin talented. I will take talent over looks ANY DAY. It helps when an actor has both (which Seung-gi and Ha Ji-won do), but seriously. I actually didn't find Seung-gi that attractive before this, but his talent has made me a swooning fangirl now. haha.

0

@Jenlikeskettlecorn, as one who almost didn't watch BL because I didn't like the boxset cover (ok, last ditch effort to redeem self: anybody out there who thought the styling was not exactly very appealing? Anybody? No?), if one has absolutely no idea who the actors are, what the drama is about, packaging would then play a very decisive role. Isn't that basic marketing?

Of course, once a person is better informed, then more important factors come into play. Acting ability will be paramount, then screen presence, personality etc.

I'm a fan of both good-lookers and average Joes in the entertainment industry, all for different reasons.

But, somehow, only the K entertainment ones bring out the fangirl in this ahjumma-in-denial...and I was NEVER, EVER one in my, er, days of yore.

0

If Korea brings back the monarchy, I hope they know that they've already found their king.

I'm surprised that so many think he's not good looking. I first saw him in BL and the minute he appeared on screen I thought 'who's this cute big-nosed baby that looks like 12'? Then I started following his career - variety and all - and watched him grow. Now with less chubby cheeks, he can stand side to side with the best in the industry and deliver a remarkable performance

Someone needs to knight him. ^^

I encountered Lee Seung Gi in the drams BL and MGIAG, I got to know him watching 1N2D and I liked him in Strong Heart. But in K2H, I fell in love with him! He is so talented, he is a good singer too, I just discovered this.
I will always remember LSG as Lee Jae Ha unless he can surpass this character in a better drama or movie.
Lee Seung Gi is handsome to me, he has a natural face, undefiled by a scalpel, thus he can emote better. I have watched "pretty looking" actors and actresses who cannot emote because they are too pretty that it is distracting!! that I cannot take them seriously.
LSG is one person and actor I can respect and admire. Same with Ha Ji Won - she is gorgeous to me and healthy looking and natural. LSG and HJW are like chameleons and they can transform into their roles unhindered.
Those who say LSG is not handsome have a different beauty standard I guess. LSG is not only handsome in looks but he has a good personality and a great attitude and a work ethic and intelligence.

And Jae Butterfly -- i agree with all you've said.
I also love that she's turned from not even being seen as a woman into his pillar.
It's just so sweet.. and the fact that we got to see the immense transformation of their relationship is such a wonderful experience.
I swear, this drama will shoot me dead in the end when it leaves.
And then, i will be left like a lost puppy trying to find it's way back home.. or even to another place that reminds me of home.

Agree with LSG being hot in the JH role. I find it all the more amazing that he has done all this without typical sexy-at-first-sight looks and a suspiciously straight nose. He is just LSG but his uber performance wins a lot of "hot" actors and somehow makes him extremely attractive.

Seung Gi is certainly someone that grows on you - I hesitated to watch MGIAG because I thought LSG is not cute enough but I picked it up any way due to the fun storyline. At the start of the show, I still didn't like LSG's role (had horrible hair, was very spoilt) but he really grew on me and then suddenly, I can't get enough of him. I became quite a fan and watched BH, even Strong Heart and 1N2D. The more I watched, the more I ready about his personality (humble, strong work ethic, etc) the more I'm drawn to him. Loving his breakout performance on TK2H!

each episode makes me wishy-washy on who I like more. I think it's the all-embracing hug that he gives Hang-Ah. I mean he just envelopes her in those wonderful arms of his. The 1st one was in Jeju island, the 2nd one was during the proposal, but the clincher was during the engagement party when he gave her the kiss. I want to be in that kind of embrace!

But then again, when Shi Kyung sang to the Princess in this episode, I needed someone to peel me off the floor. *swoon*

So I decided to compartmentalize my heart and give them equal space. I'm totally gonna be a two-timer.

The various facets of his compelling personality & psyche and growth in the same (since Ep 1) have made me JH's fangirl through 'n through!!

0

You forgot the hug at the WOC and the dream hug AND the sofa hug! The last three hugs were the best! Normally, Kdrama hugs are quite awkward and one sided, but the last three were absolutely body clinging, tight, hot, yet sweet and natural.

0

When I mention LSG to some of my friends, they describe him as the one with 'chubby cheeks', 'baby face', 'thick lips' etc. I'm upset that they don't look behind the face. SO SHALLOW! SG's looks are the kind that grows on you. His looks are the kind that you won't get sick of because its 'pretty'. In fact, he has the kind of looks that looks better and better as you get to know him. I think that it's his personality that makes him handsome, and that goes a loooong way.

In Yeouido, the traditional ratings still call the shots, which is the sad fate. It also translates to year end awards, because there are really no real critics panels as we have seen over the years.

i don't understand the ratings.
The storyline , the intensity of acting...Why ? Whats to fault? I went over to read the other competing show's recap & I came out still clueless . Nothing out of the ordinary . I'm just guessing that this North South divide just needles people in the wrong way , so they dun wanna even entertain , a show that glamourises or cotton-cushions the real political situation . Just trying to make sense of why such good writing & acting is being side-stepped.

I am not authority but I remember when I was young, my grandparents refused to watch any war movies. Especially those related to WWII. Even if it was a comedy or a fantasy, it was still too soon and struck too close to home for them to watch it.

Perhaps that is why the ratings are still so low?

I am watching via internet - I live in N America.
TV ratings are obsolete nowadays- who cares?

I have never took part in a spirited discussion over a kdrama until this !LOL

0

More so, my analyse for rating is these:

1. The elder can't stand the intensity of tk2h, so the youngster who want to watch this drama give up the remote control to their parents, and tune on streaming (live rating streaming is DAEBAK!)

2. we must admit that tk2h is not a drama that you could easily switch channels, you'll lost track when you do that! So many will confused with the plot and end up switch channels

3. Many korean people don't find tk2h as their taste, more over a\each drama has their own genre. EM is for them wholove revenge and mello,RP is for cutesy over the top rom-com, while TK2H is...can you please describe this? I can't! For me, it's a whole package of intense, and romantic, and family!!

From all of the analyse I strongly suspect 1st one as the main reason, yunno why :D

EM....makes me want to throw something. There are so many characters in it that I hate and want to see die more than Bong Gu. I love it though. Its the bitter pill I take each week that helps me vent off stress. *mutters* Just die already Soo-Mi.

So I have cute and revenge and then I have The King which is in a class all to itself. ^^

Did anyone say how lovely that Jae Ha finds a friend and companion in Hang Ah, not just the love of his life?

He shares everything with her! Things he could not share with his mother, his best buddy (Eun Jr., for good reason), he is able to share with Hang Ah. And she provides such sane, kind, and generous council! She said to give Eun Sr. time because she knows the first misstep was a genuine mistake, that everything else that followed was kind of inevitable. And Jae Ha agrees with her in his heart. He just needs some time to get over it.

In fact, Jae Ha himself is a very open person. He seldom tells lies. He seldom conceal his feelings or does things behind people's back. In this, he and Hang Ah are so alike.

I love that about this couple! Remember that time at the riverside when they were taking a breather during the 60 km trek? He's stressing about WOC trng. test he failed and the trek he thought he was about to fail, and she has the wherewithal to share with him about appreciating the beauty of the moment they're in now, pointing out the sunny day though it is winter and the need to take advantage of it. His reaction to that was one of awe, though not in words.

I thought from that moment that this is what she can do for him. Though fraught with feelings of inadequacy and awkwardness when she entered palace, one her biggest talents is her ability to be there for him, to comfort him and be his biggest support and best friend, and as such (and with love behind it) be able to offer (as you mentioned) sane, kind, and generous council. No mind games with these two..no time for that. If there is any holding back of info between them, it is with difficulty and with the belief that withholding info is better than revealing the truth and to protect the other.

How about the 'You're not a woman to me' --> 'Lovesick-for-HangAh'. They both make me swoon for their love, commitment, and unwavering faith in each other! It says something that even in his dreams she comforted him that they're 'a team'!

They rely on e/o and are sources of strength when one needs the other. In Ep 15 we have HA calling out JH as the 'immature one' and then proceeding to sob in her beloved's arms when she blew up the last center!

They don't have ONE aspect to their rel'p....it all feels so real. After they're kidnapped Hang-Ah knows that Jae-has must be a wreck and hence advises the Queen Mother to eat so they can sustain themselves until they figure out a plan to escape! It's the little things that we've come to appreciate about our OTP! They're so in sync with each other after their brief separation! <3

@Saima,

Yes, Hang Ah totally predicted Jae Ha's reaction to their kidnapping.

That shows how much she knows her man and how deep their love is.

They are equal partners in every way.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, totally. And I LOVE that Hang-ah is actually frequently a step ahead of Jae-ha. She's a source of support to him, but she also challenges him to be a better version of himself.

And Jae-ha, for all of his insecurity and all the time he's spent "playing" the carefree asshole, is an incredibly honest, honorable man. His openness is actually one of his greatest strengths, I think. He openly admits when he's done wrong and he stands up to rectify his mistakes.

I'm i the only one that is completely desapointed from the " lee jae shin / eun shi kyung " scene ?????

i mean WTF ?

he was so cold towards her this time !!! he was unmoved , and when you remember she confessed to him first and wanted to spend some time with him which means that she misses him !!!!! why did he act like a jerk to her ? i m soooooooooooo LOST here !

Required fields are marked *

I don't think he was being cold. That's really how he feels and things like that do happen. Ladies will be fascinated with a man because he's different and weird but then it wears off. She's always calling him uninteresting and really does seem to be - from his perspective - more curious about him than anything else. He's deeply in love with her though and to protect himself from a possible heartache, he prefers to avoid it.

Also how he spoke to her wasn't cold at all. His feelings were all over his face - he doesn't want to be a plaything. And at the end he revealed some of his feelings towards her. She just needs to now work on convincing him.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree with @Arhazivory - he even sang to her the song she sang to him (which made me swoon - ah. i hope he has a track in the upcoming OST). And wasn't he encouraging her to sing again?

Although she confessed to him, I think he's even more reluctant to acknowledge that because she is the Princess and he is the Royal Guard. And we all know how proper Shi Kyung is (he even memorized the Royal Guard Handbook and can quote it on demand!). I thought his heart was on on his sleeve (in Shi Kyung bot standard) when he sang to her her song and when he told her why he knew the song even if he only heard it once. That was his love confession right there.

Required fields are marked *

Be careful; he didn't say "I don't reciprocate your feelings", he said "I don't want to become your plaything", quoting the recap "She’s right about him being no fun, and when she gets to know him, the shininess of the new toy will wear off, and she’ll be sick of him."

In my book this means "I love you, even much much more than you love me, but I don't trust you. You're the princess and I'm the guard. You'll get bored of me when you get to know me better and I will be devastated and heartbroken for the rest of my life. So please let go of me before I get attached to you.."

I agree with Arhazivory as well; from SK's point of view, the princess do indeed seem as no more than just being curious about him. That also must be tormenting him because he pities himself. He does not see his own value and effect on people around him. He's just a gentle and lonely soul, poor baby. On the other hand, I think the princess also does not know how to handle her feelings. It seems as if this is her first true love and she's staggering which makes it all the more cute ^^

Totally agree with the assessment. I even think that she doesn't find him boring at all. Frustrating, yes, but not boring. I think they complement each other very well and they bring out the best in each other, because they are so different...on opposite sides of a room, really. He is so by the book, so earnest and proper; she, before the accident, was the wild child, and now, while regaining her strength, she shows that she goes for it, for him in this case. Like we say in Spanish "ella va' a todas". He does not. But that is why they need each other, to find a happy medium, to balance each other.

Jae Shin already started her path on that road; now Shi Kyung needs to do it, and it won't be easy. However, if TK2H ends happily for them, I think it will be very rewarding.

@Arhazivory, @Minea, @Asabiyet, @Jane

All very well said. May I add that SK may view that JS's accident and subsequent paralysis is making her feel needy & scared and she's just finding solace in him which doesn't stem from true love. He's afraid that it's temporary and her feelings may change if/when she recovers. Remember she was always pompous and sarcastic to him before her fall and was only sweet to him at the wall when she sang to him.

I agree with that point as well. It really could be that she's just finding solace in him as far as he's concerned.

C'mon Jaeshin...find some way to make him believe in you!

Jo Jung Seok is knocking it out of the park as SK in this drama I felt all his conflicted emotions in that scene with the Princess.

Their relationship parallels Jae-ha's with Hang-ah's at the beginning. Jae-shin is more earnest and mature than Jae-ha was (largely because of the tragedy she's had to suffer), but she's still MUCH more experienced and bold than Shi-kyung.

Shi-kyung has very low self-esteem (largely because his father seems to have instilled in him a pretty big inferiority complex) and he doesn't play games, or even really *understand* romantic games, so it's natural that he would be reluctant to give himself over to what he views as a passing fancy on behalf of the princess. If she wanted to, she could chew him up and spit him out. Fortunately, she recognizes his value and strength and loves and respects him for that. But he doesn't know this.

Required fields are marked *

And don't forget this happened just after the Eun Sr. incident. I think it drives home the point (in SK's mind) that SK and the princess are separated by a big gulf of class difference (as someone mentioned earlier). He is extremely cautious; he much rather stays by the princess and protects her (and secretly loves her) than risking being treated as a toy by her and as gold digger by others.

Oooh, wonderful point about the context of this scene occurring when Eun's firing is weighing heavy on Shi-kyung's mind. Especially since Jae-ha played firing Secretary Eun off as though he was just flippantly throwing away an old toy that no longer amused him. Of course, Shi-kyung has enough faith in the king that he doesn't fully believe this explanation...but I'm sure it's got to shake his confidence a bit in the royal family to hear this. And it's understandable that he'd have even less confidence in Jae-shin's feelings for him, given his own insecurities and the fact that he doesn't know her as well as Jae-ha.

@Marie
I agree coz even I fast forwarded that scene coz it was disgusting --at that time. I am thinking that if you are watching it first time - start at episode 6 , then backtrack to the beginning. Bong gu and his side kick is getting more air time that the lead characters at times.

The draw for me was Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung gi - I came to like him watching strong heart and 1N2D .
Anyway, we are at epi 16 now and all is forgiven.

@iluvlsg...I did not realized that BG had some air time...I just felt scared about him when he did that magic of lifting the coffin and threatening that father...that was scary but I realized that he has to play extremely well for us to react to his role of being evil to a point that his character even affected the ratings...

But BG's character only can exist this strong because of JH/HA. World class acting like HJW and with a much improved LSG in this drama can't have a weak evil counterpart.

I am a HJW fan, I know she will give her best to her work...I always look forward in watching her movie/drama.
It might get worse first...but I'm looking forward to what twist is presented on the next 4 episodes...

I'm loving that there are so many people to love and root for in this drama. Sometimes K-dramas are filled with people who are going through the motions for plot b filler, or they're so hateful you want spend half the episode throwing things at your screen. This drama has so many people I care about and I WANT to watch, I think that's really fantastic.

This whole episode was TEARS. Guys, never trust a k drama episode that kicks off with a joyous kiss, that's totally code for THE REST OF THIS EPISODE WILL MAKE YOU CRY. I finally lost it when Eun Shikyung was holding back tears while Jae Ha was breaking down in front of him.

How is it that LSG is such a good cryer? He officially owns crying in dramas- this episode alone he had: angry betrayed tears, sad betrayed tears on his fiancé's lap, suppressed tears while playing the bad guy with Shikyung, eyes full of sad the entire scene with Bonggu, those EYES during his dream- so sad, so hopeful, and then... total meltdown with Shikyung. I lost it, I LOST IT.

first of all I just wanna say that I'm sooo proud that i choose to be a CRAZY TO DEATH FANGIRL of Lee Seunggi....since the moment i started watching 2d1n seunggi owned me already, even though i received a lot of questionings from others as to why i admire him so much despite the looks, well then friends here's your answer!!...i think most of u guys would agree with me if i say that we see through beyond his looks, co'z what we see in him is a very rare person and a rare actor with a sincere personality and awesome character which i rarely see in some actors and actresses now a days and that what makes him MORE HANDSOME than anyone else!!!...and remember guys TO ADMIRE SOMEONE BASED ONLY ON HIS LOOKS IS SHALLOW, BUT TO ADMIRE SOMEONE BASED ON HIS CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY IS PRICELESS!

and i'm so proud as to where the story of K2H is leading...great story..great casts...and great production...and what i love the most is that they are giving everyone a fare share of spotlight..and letting other actors and actresses shine in the characters they portray...so overall DAEBAK!!!!!!

@ Kappy: It's a recognition for their frugality as well as their participation in charity events. You can read more about it here: http://amazingyeoja.blogspot.com/2011/10/lee-seung-gi-and-ha-ji-won-receive.html

Thank you @NN, amtee, glo, and reglest for answering my question. Wow, interesting that there's an award for one's frugality. I can understand the charity participation part. I mean, I'm all for it! I don't think they have such an award amongst celebrities in America, right? At least I haven't heard of any. Glad they recognize people for these kinds of things in SK. Makes me wonder who might take first in my country.

Saving his money. He received the top award (and HJW got the second highest) during a promote saving campaign for his frugal way with money. He drives a nice but ordinary (no Ferrari for this kid) car; he has something like 10 bank accounts; he owns a very nice apartment and lives there with his parents. This is a celebrity who ranked 2nd highest in earning (I think).

I thought that was so awesome of him. He's making a ton of money but doesn't show any bling-bling for it. And him having 10 bank accounts shocked me! Like seriously...10?!

The only thing he doesn't seem to mind spending money on is clothes. He dresses like a prince. ^^ And I have no problems with that.

it's not 10 dear, it's about 10 (can be more or less) but for Seung Gi I believe it's the former.
Yes, he doesn't show off much.

For his clothes, oh...ho...it's much more better now than before, and me likey! Even his t-shirt's price make me gasp kkk~

Anything more than 5 is remarkable in my book. lol. I only have 3....

Man, I need to make more money.

Saver = save money. He's diligently investing & saving his money so he was recognized and received Savings Award last year (with Ha Ji Won) - http://lsgfan.wordpress.com/2011/10/31/lee-seung-gi-ha-ji-won-recognized-at-48th-savings-day/

To be honest, when I saw Seunggi & Jiwon together at the Savings Award, I really wanted them to be paired up in a drama. So glad it came true, thank you K-dramagods! They're one of the best OTP I've ever seen in K-drama.

By the way, i loooove Seung gi in Heritory clothes!!! He looks sooooo good in them. I want to get them for hubby too! But they don't have an online shop. Can someone please feedback to them to open an online shop? Dying to clothe my hubby in those clothes! Maybe then my hubby will resemble LSG a bit. Hahaha... I wonder what is their sales like after the screening of K2H.

Seung Gi is Heritory main model,
Heritory it self is a brand new line, but I love their concept too. <3

Agree with you, Seung Gi has endorsed many clothing line, but I think heritory suits him the best. The line is classy and warm, just fitted into Seung Gi's image.
I also wonder about their sales. Do you know that DD sales increasing drastically? Rumor said they even considering to extend the contract with Seung Gi^^

haha babes, that's funny. Cos when Mind Bridges came to Singapore, i brought my boyfriend to see the life size poster of Gong Yoo (their spokesperson model) just so he'd know who my fav korean actor was. Ended up having him try and shirt just for the heck of it (unfortunately he is European size and didn't fit the Korean/Asian cut).

But i often walk past the Mind Bridge counter just so i can oogle at life size Gong Yoo.

Yes, now i wish they'd bring Heritory and Kolon Sport to Singapore so I can oogle at Seung Gi!

The Queen mother and The King Fiancee got kidnapped but the King don't get a proper help from anybody?! even from his South Korean army?! I just don't get it, he just struggle alone, that doesn't make any sense, even Shi Kyung is busy because he have to keep Jae Shin safe.

Please excuse me, Via, I believe Ms. Koala have given you a very thorough answer, but if you don't mind. I'm trying to answer that, but please spare me who has this very limited and shallow mind, ok? ^^

First of all, the kidnapping incident is happen outside of South Korea, which mean it's not the area of Jae Ha/South korea authority anymore. Let's say Jae Ha sent a troop of army to that other country to look for Hang Ah and queen dowager, it's similar with barging into someone's other house without permission, That's rude right? It's the same.

I want to correct a bit, is it okay? He is not struggle alone dear. GF said that he approach club M through diplomatic way, means embassy is involved here, but they can't show all that scenes right? If so, it'll be pretty boringgg!

Tht's from me. I hope you satisfied with my answer, though I think Ms.Koala answer is much more better and complete than mine^^

Mother and hang ah went to Somalia for some charity work.

Jae ha with advice from secretary asked help in a diplomatic way from the US and China, to approach BG since he was not answering JH's calls.

I am correct girls? I watch the english sub in Viki but not 100% so I might not be correct.

Can you imagine the diplomatic whup ass Korea would get if they sent their troops down to WhichAficanNationWasItAgain? to try to extricate the Queen Mum and Hang Ah? That country is already in impending civil war and with any outside provocation, may just implode.

And we are not really shown where Queen Mum And Hang Ah are, are we? Or did I miss that? I just thought they were transported to one of John Mayo's hide-out, location not determined. So where would Jae Ha or Hang Ah's daddy even send their troops to?

He is very smart! Read that he was a straight As student in middle and high school. He did his degree in international trade and commerce. Graduated within 4 years in spite of his busy schedule. Now he is doing his masters. How can you find someone like him in entertainment? Hats off to him for accomplishing all these.

N I love the way he speaks English! Very nice, not awkward at all like most Korean actors.

woahh- his sister's studying in the States!!

I remember reading try96's account (at the airport in 2011; when Seung-gi sang along with his mentor for a small concert or something in the US) of stumbling onto a young female (who was with an older female). The younger female after seeing a small crowd who were waiting for Seung-gi mentioned in amazement that she couldn't believe it (i guess that fans would be awaiting his arrival at the airport in the US)!!

I wonder if she was his sister?!

I know I've already said this before but these two just take hand holding to a whole new level and I lalalalove it!

When Jae Ha was curled in a fetal position on Hang Ah's lap and holding her hand close to his heart.

During the dream sequence, when HA held JH's hand after they hugged.

I can go on and on about all the times they held hands...Such a sweet and intimate gesture. And what a contrast from their WOC training days when our spoiled bratty JH was holding her hand and making fun of her saying "You are not a woman to me."

Gahhh..they have come such a long way. *tears*

@Iena,

I know. It could also be we fans just have too much pent-up passion for this OTP that we salivate over every little thing! And since we only got one good kiss and one gentle kiss and a shot of a bed with them two on it, any other physical contact such as touching hands got magnified and examined and dreamed over. Hahaha.

Did you see the picture of them 'back hugging'? It's in the end credit of Ep. 15. Check it out. It will tide you over a very enjoyable half hour!

TK2H - PERFECT CASTING all round. I can't identify anyone who can be replaced. They are all perfectly convincing for their roles; with the right emotions for each scenario. I fully agree that this drama really deserves all the awards that are available...for the casts, writers, director, production crew, etc.

I started watching because of my admiration of Seung Gi........such a successful multi-talented entertainer at the young age of 25 but who never fails to take on new challenges and gives his all and works really hard at them. Was so disappointed to read the negative comments upon his casting but am so happy to read all the positive comments especially from the critics and converts. THAT is Seung Gi's unspoken power....silently proving himself with action.

This drama has also made me a fan of HJW. Honestly didnt know her (only remembered she was jointly awarded the Savings Award with Seung Gi) but decided to watch Secret Garden b4 TK2H to get a feel of HJW and love her since.

Wasnt impressed (actually irritated) by Sung Min fr watching Brain but love him to death as Jae Kang. How can there ever be a better brother than him.

No specific impressions of the rest of the cast before TK2H but really love all of them now...from the 2nd leads JJS n LYJ, seniors YYJ, LSJ n LDK and even bad guy YJM. Same goes for the WOC team.

TK2H holds many 1st for me :
- 1st k-drama I watch livestreaming....so thankful for live subs from soulan and vingle.
- 1st drama which has me constantly checking out various sites/forums for the Eng sub videos, recaps, comments, immediately after the livestream and all the way through the next episode.
- 1st time commenting in forums like this.
- 1st time I cant watch another drama until after TK2H has ended its run.

TK2H is the BEST! BEST! BEST!.
